Rooftop Escape

Updated with some shots of Jake taken by Reuters at a hotel in London. And be sure to check out Part Two of the 30ninjas interview with Jake. It's funny and fascinating.

Ain't It Cool has a long review, with many spoilers (though you can avoid them). It's mostly positive, with high marks for Jake!

So the big question here is obvious. How does Jake stand up to an action-adventure hero role? Pretty damn well actually. He's got the physical presence, the charm, the energy required for something like this. You know that kind of broad comedy that's wedged into every single mainstream blockbuster? He nails it. His interplay with Arterton's Tamina works well, at least on his side. Jake's going to come out of this smelling like roses and getting a fair few new job opportunities coming his way. A great pick by Bruckheimer. Oh, and his first action scene is climbing up the wall as the arrows are shot into it, as seen in one of the trailers. It's effortlessly fun.

And another new video clip - short and from a scene we've seen quite a lot of:

The first extended video clip from Prince of Persia shows Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) eluding the bad guys through some parkourish derring do.

(This clip isn't too spoilerish - it's basically a longer version of snippets we've seen in previous clips. It runs just under a minute.)

Movietickets has another clip, with Jake, Ben Kingsley, Richard Coyle, Toby Kebbell and Reece Ritchie :)

Jake didn't have to resort to running on walls to return to his London hotel, but he looks like he could wield a sword or two at the photographer(s):

I hope there were some other clothes in that trunk!

Oh, look - there were:

Jerry Bruckheimer on Good Day, New York yesterday. There are some new snippets here, so it's somewhat spoilery:

Reposting this from the end of the last post - I also added a couple of reviews, one good and one very bad:

I won't keep doing this, as the days go on, I'm sure there will be more and more screenings. But here are some more tweets and FB comments. I don't think there were as many screenings tonight as last night. At least, there weren't as many mentions:

Saw "Prince of Persia" yesterday. Good movie. Better than I thought it would be! Great for the whole family to see. It might seem weird to see Jake Gyllenhaal as the star, but he really is perfect for this movie.

Prince of Persia = bad bad bad. White people pretending to be brown. Bad accents all around. Graphics worse than a 90s videogame. Film school editing. Repetitive. Razzie-worthy acting. TOO LONG.

Also saw Prince of Persia with Jake Gyllenhaal not a movie I would normally pick out but glad I saw it, also great

enjoyed the advance sacreening of Prince of Persia this morning with Disney executives.

Saw "Prince of Persia" yesterday. Good movie. Better than I thought it would be! Great for the whole family to see. It might seem weird to see Jake Gyllenhaal as the star, but he really is perfect for this movie.

Prince Of Persia...two thumbs up!

Just saw a preview screening of Prince of Persia. Let's just say I'm glad it was free. It is not the new Pirates. Sorry Disney.

i saw the sneak preview of prince of persia at the landmark theather. it was the best movie. there were posters after the movie

Morning! Went to see prince of Persia yesterday / a fun romp! Interviewing Jake glydenhaal later today

Attended a test screening for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and, well, it really REALLY sucked. If you thought Transformers 2 was bad, this is kind of the same thing except worse in every department. This is kind of a rare thing, but I don't recommend this film to anybody, because I honestly don't see who could like it. At least the CGI is pretty, but how could it be otherwise with 150 million dollars.

A much longer blog review. And also much more positive than that last comment:

Prince of Persia was AMAZING. I mean, seriously. One of the better movies I have seen. There was plenty of action, but it wasn't overly graphic, so I think kids 12+ would be able to watch without issue. The action was amazing. The parkour was awesome. The fight scenes were perfect and kept you on the edge of your seat. There were some scary scenes involving snakes, but they ended pretty quickly.

The story was perfect. From my friend who is a huge fan of the Prince of Persia games, he said that they did it JUST right. ...

The acting was spot on - Ben Kingsley did a great job, as did Gemma Atherton. I know there were reservations about Jake Gylenhaal as the Prince, but he did an incredible job. He looked the part and he played the part without any flaws. The only complaint I had was that his accent was a bit off in some places, but seriously, he did wonderfully. ...

The special effects were great and the movie was really just beautifully done. It was a pleasure to watch, and when it was over I was surprised at how quickly it had moved. It wasn't a long movie by any means. I would definitely go see it again.

It always amazes me when some people are making comments like the last one in your first comment. Although if you are not too impressed or dislike something - why bash everything? Especially if there are enough people who obviously feel different.

On Box Ofice Mojo there is also one person who hates the film with a passion and until today I was not able to find out, why?

This is a phenomenon I have seen also with other movies, not only PoP.

This one will be a lighthearted summer popcorn film. I hope it will bring Jake some more fans and giving him a bit more influence and therefore the possibilty to making smaller, challenging projects happening when his name is attached. (I hope this sentence makes sense......)

I like the new video with Jake running and jumping...

He is not too amused to see the photographers....hope he has some time to relax and enjoy being in London without being harassed permanently.

Monica said...

UV, still avoiding to see these videos.

These reviews are interesting. The good thing is that most are positive.

UV, that was not a review, it was just some political commentary about what occurs in the film.
I'll wait to see what he will talk about junkett.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

I'm exhausted after watching Jake in that first video, those scenes are amazing!

The reviews are mostly positive which is good. This is going to be a fun movie that will have a wider audience than other Jake films.

Your sentence makes perfect sense Carla: the success of Pop will allow Jake to make more movies like SC and LAOD, he will have more clout in HW.

He doesn't look like a happy camper in the London pics, I do hope he is enjoying this wild ride!

I loved that first clip - the action is wonderful, and I love Danstan's flying hair, his hurling himself, over and up walls. The climbing is amazing. There's some "outsmarting the bad guys" humor too. Gorgeous and you can almost hear it as well as see it. And don't get me started on Tamina's costumes. For some reason, all the clips, all the reviews, are doing nothing but making my head spin and not succeeding in anything but making me want to see it. :)

Anonymous said...

Or you can feel it too - I think 3D might have been sensory overload! :)

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Yes the costumes are gorgeous and the action sequences are fine w/o the 3-D, it would be too much IMO.

UltraViolet said...

I forgot to say this yesterday: Mary, you should definitely try to go to the premiere. I bet some IHJ peeps will be going. And even if you can't arrange to meet someone, you'll be among like-minded folks ::)

Just updated with some new pics from yesterday - courtesy of IHJ/the redoubtable Stephanie.

Carla, do you mean the person who insists that PoP will be a huge flop? I read that box office prediction thread, and one guy just hates the movie irrationally.

And yes, I'd love for this to do for Jake what Pirates did for Johnny Depp. No, I don't expect it to be as big as PotC. But just a little of that success and its results would be very nice for Jake.

OONP, it is nice to see Jake smiling in the new pics. Always love that smile. When you see more of the nighttime pics, you can see all the photographers and people at the hotel, so it's not surprising Jake was a little leery.

And yes, 3D would have been overkill.

Monica, I've read a couple of reviews that mention the political angle - part of the plot akin to the US looking for "weapons of mass destruction." I'd be shocked if the politics is too heavy, though. This is Bruckheimer and popcorn territory!

UltraViolet said...

Just updated with some shots of Jake from yesterday - done by Reuters. The close-ups are lovely, but why wear chinos for a photoshoot? Someone should have made a rooftop escape with those pants!

Also, I can't resist. Most of these are from UK media types:

ShowbizSimon: Saw Disney's Prince Of Persia last night. It's bloody good! It's basically Pirates Of The Caribbean in the sand but ten times better!

Moviefone_UK: we saw Prince of Persia last night too :) Not sure if we liked it more than Pirates though - it just wasn't as funny.

heyuguysblog: Just seen Prince of Persia and it gets a thumbs up from me!

Popprince: Just about to talk Prince of Persia with some bloke callled Jake Gyllenhaal...film was good fun and me thinks he might do well...?
less than 20 seconds ago from Twitter for BlackBerry®

screengeekuk: I expected the worst with Prince Of Persia last night, but loved it. A gorgeous adventure - ignore the goofiness of trailer.

jameskingmovies: big fan of Prince Of Persia.

Prince of Persia in 'not bad movie-of-game' shocker. Some super-clunky dialogue, but impressive effects and eye candy for gents AND lasses.

Anonymous said...

Love these new pics, and the videos. So glad about the great reviews - there will always be those who don't like something, but it looks like generally people are appreciating it, a lot. Just the sheer visual splendor is going to get me. :)

Anonymous said...

... some bloke callled Jake Gyllenhaal. LOL

This made me laugh for some reason, thinking of Jake as just another bloke. Ha!

My local coffeeshop has a life-sized, cardboard red-eyed Edward Cullen and Jack Sparrow with his gorgeous eyeliner as you walk in, saying they can't start their days without a cup a joe, so I hope they'll get a gorgeous Dastan like on the movie poster. :)

UltraViolet said...

Oh, I hope they do get a life-size Dastan, though you might get a coffee addiction from going to the store multiple times a day!

Visual splendor is a good description, anon!

Just replaced that sort of lame Access Hollywood summer preview with Jerry Bruckheimer on a NY talk show yesterday. There are a couple of longer scenes that we've seen before in brief, including the "jumping into the fountain" scene. So fair warning, suvee and Monica :)

Also, I have a feeling these next few days will involve lots of photos and vids and updates. We'll try to keep up!

Anonymous said...

:) lol

This is lots of fun tho.

UltraViolet said...

And another film clip.

Glad you're having fun, anon :)

Anonymous said...

Wow, I liked that interview with Jerry. I never did see the Pirates trilogy, I don't know why. From the previews it looked great, beautiful costumes and scenery like PoP. But the next Pirates is going to be in Hawaii? Wheeee!

FL said...

I think I could listen to Jerry talk about the business all day long. He certainly knows what he's talking about.

Re the pap pics. Do we think Jake was at The Audley? Marc Jacobs shop right next door? Or...could he have revisited that old CZ favorite, Scotts, just two doors down? My money is on Scotts.

FL said...

Oh and thanks for the most recent film clip, UV. I notice that we hear Jake speak at length in character, something we didn't get too much of in any of the other clips. So that was nice. :-)

UltraViolet said...

The Bruckheimer interview was pretty good. I'm not really a fan but you can't deny the man's success. And the stuff about tax incentives was interesting.

FL, it was great to get a quieter scene and to hear Jake talk.

I wonder how many clips they'll release. I don't think I want to watch them all if they put out a whole bunch.

I think we're all a little crazy for Jake, Rosa :)

(I think that's what you said!)

Too much happening today - part two of Jake's interview with 30ninjas.

He talks about doing the PoP stunts and what went wrong, and he discusses working on UMP.

I remember this one scene where I got pulled from first unit to second unit really, really quickly, and we had this big fight scene with Toby Kebbell, who plays my brother in the movie. We had it choreographed, and he had worked on it a lot, but I had had very little time to work on it. But my character was sort of, you know, up against the wall at that point. And so I was literally just defending myself from his entire choreographed fight. I would remember it piece by piece kind of, but not really the whole thing, and the whole thing has the feeling of me going like, “Holy Shit!” The whole thing is me just being like, “Got it! Made that! OK, back over here, OK, we’re here, holy fuck! Wow, I punched him! Wow! Okay!” You know? It’s all real.

I took a photograph of myself after I did my first huge jump. Because I didn’t know on that day that we were gonna do the jump, and I was ecstatic that I had done it, and I was like, “I got it, I got it.” I just took my phone and took a picture of just, like, this massive smile on my face.

JULINA: What’s your ideal time to come onto a film? When you’re able to do one or two drafts of rewrites and have a large part in its development, or does it not really matter? Do you have criteria of how much time you like to have with the script?

JAKE: Ideally?

JULINA: Yeah, ideally.

JAKE: Yeah, that’s what you said. [Laughs] I think, ideally, I do like to be with the material for a long time. And I liken it to rehearsing fight choreography or trying to figure out an accent. I’m definitely not an actor that picks it up immediately and can roll with it. I need to go over it over and over and over again, and that’s something I’ve learned [about myself] over time. I like to be there for a few drafts before it becomes the final shooting version because, particularly if you’re in a majority of the scenes of the movie, you’re part of the steering of the ship, so you just need to know that ship really well and where it’s going. I get off on that too — that’s what I enjoy. That’s why it’s been fun working with Doug, and with Simon [Kinberg] on [the Untitled Moon Project] developing this movie together, because they’re really collaborative and we’ve been through different versions discussing things all the time, and all of that discussion goes into whatever the final version is. Even if the scenes you’ve discussed for years don’t end up in the final version of the movie, somehow they’re there, you know? So I like to be a part of it, and I also think it’s really bonding to be doing that with all the filmmakers. You’re with your director and you’re with your writers — you’re listening to how they work, and how they change things, and what makes them nervous, and how you can make them feel comfortable, on the day. You know, with some directors — most directors — I like to know what they have to have the day before [we shoot a given scene], so that they can start their day. I like to know how you can give them what they want.

You have to check out the story. I love all the little glimpses of humor in there. The 30ninja interviewer did a good job o this interview. There's some of the same stuff but a lot of "not heard before," which is nice. Because I have a feeling we're going to be getting a lot of boilerplate over the next few weeks!

This latest clip is beautiful - Jake's chest. Sorry to drool. His accent is great too - thye definitely have the classic movie feel down. Tobey and his armor is gorgeous too. I love listening to Jerry too. :)

Ain't It Cool has a long review, mostly positive. Has only 3/5 stars but really, it's a more-than-middling review, with very high marks for Jake:

Woah, that is a great review of Jake's work in PoP from AICN!! Since they are the outpost for these kind of things I hope that brings tons of gamers to the theatres. :)

And that video of Jake (showing chest!!) and Sir Ben in that PoP scene...um...squee!!!

Nice new pics too. He sure is styling in London.

That is great review from AICN, that's a tough bunch over there!

There is so much to catch up on.

What great smiling pics of Jake, but yeah chinos are a bit casual. He looks more dressed up for the JR show, thanks FL!!

He looks happier in the earlier London pics than later on I can't believe that for once Bruckheimer didn't get on my nerves, LOL!! That was a good interview, he knows what he is doing and does it so well.

I have to read part 2 of his 3Ninjas interview, thansk for posting UV!.

UltraViolet said...

Extra, this post is overflowing, lol. We need another post to catch what's fallen off.

I posted another new clip - this one we've seen almost all of: Sand Trap.

I love the 30ninjas interview, Extra. Hope you will, too.

PoP initial reaction:

This afternoon I saw Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time at a screening in the heart of London. Of course I can’t reveal any spoilers or anything much that would ruin the cinematic experience for you, plus the Mouse House would be pissed off, but for a film based on a computer game – it’s definitely winner!

To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect at all since those earlier images of Jake Gyllenhaal all buffed up and looking, well, a little bit camp. But Mike Newell and his production crew have crafted a thrilling action-adventure film. Not to dismiss the gaming world, but we all know the history of game to film adaptations hasn’t yielded the best results.

And Gemma Arteton is definitely the next big thing…watch out Keira Knightley, you’ve got a competitor in your midst!

I love all the different moods on Jake's face in these pictures, he is so expressive and sexy!

These reviews ade fantastic, I was a little nervous about them but so far so good. And AICN is fanboy city, so I was thrilled to read that review.

And speaking of "City" I lost count on the # of buses and bus stops with posters for that damn Sex in the City 2, and I have yet seen any Pop posters on buses or bus stops! There are plenty of them in the subways though.

I enjoyed part 2 of the 3Ninjas interview, Jake's face and an ax! Very dangerous stunts, he was lucky he wasn't seriously hurt!

Reading how he loves being involved with scripts and all levels of making a movie, not just acting he will be directing sooner than later IMO.

Love the newest video, Jake chest is yummy! Jerry came across as one smart guy, I can see why he is so sucessful.

Love that pic of Jake and Adam, can't wait to see the interview.

I think I was traumatized from the interview with Jimmy Kimmel that always twist my nose when I read that he will be in a talk show.

I did not like this new photoshoot.

Thanks for all the information, UV.

The AICN review and Part 2 of the Ninjas' interview were both terrific! Jake has such a beautiful sense of humor, even as you recognize how completely absorbed and serious he is with the process stuff. Don't know what He and Doug Liman will eventually do together, but it sounds like great fun.

BTW: There's a video on Justjared of Katie Holmes... and her husband, doing a performance for some charity thing... here she sings and dances to "What Ever Lola Wants" and Tom plays the baseball player. I know.

I just took my phone and took a picture of just, like, this massive smile on my face.

This is exactly the kind of Jakeism that endears him to me. I love how proud he was of himself for making that first jump (as well he should be), and wanting to capture that moment with a photo. Makes me smile.

I'm relieved that, so far, the majority of PoP reviews are positive..... and most importantly IMO, Jake is getting quite good notices. I particularly enjoyed reading the AICN Jake love!

Love, love, love the out and about in London pics. Love the chinos, even though the fit looks a bit off. But as far as I'm concerned, his casual style is perfect!

Here's what I want to know..... those shoes.....that he has worn for years now...... does he have just the one pair? I have to believe that he has several pairs of these much beloved shoes. Either that, or he is keeping some cobbler in business. :)

Oh and thanks to UV for the potential spoiler alerts with all these PoP videos. I appreciate it!

Lastly, Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Actually...back in October when he was out shopping with his dad in NYC he seems to have purchased a new pair of boots from Billy Reid (see bag and note the change of footwear pre-Billy Reid bag and post-Billy Reid bag).

From Disney Singapore's FB page:

We'll be having a Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Global Junket on 8th May 2010, 5.30pm (London Time) LIVE on Ustream.tv. Do you have any questions for the cast and crew of Prince of Persia?

Watch it live here.

Video of the McFarlane Dastan figure. Not a positive review, but I'm not into the whole toy scene!

Mary, you should definitely go. Send me a PM (gyllenbabble@gmail.com).

Bobbyanna, I think I'll skip that TomKat video - thanks for the warning. I loved the interview and review, too. And ITA on Jake's sense of humor and seriousness.

And suvee, I love it that Jake took a pic of himself. You know he wanted it for posterity and probably also to show to the people in his life at the time.

I try to be vigilant about the spoilers :)

Those chinos are driving me mad. If he's wearing them tomorrow, I won't be a happy camper!

Monica, I liked Mr & Mrs Smith and the original Bourne movie. And I think it' great for Jake to be collaborating from the beginning. But Liman does have some issues, so who knows how it will work out in the end?

I love Jake in his very form-fitting pants but they do look a bit dodgy in some shots.

I can see Jake taking a picture of himself to capture the moment, I really love that interview.

This has been so exciting for Jake fans, and there is still more to come!

Those Jeff Wells readers are usually some middle-aged frustrated men....although some of his readers were irritated that he called "Source Code" a "brain-dead Eloi popcorn movie". The times when I took his blog serious are long over.

I am trying to stay away from all new PoP clips and videos now - I want to enjoy the movie with all the surprises and excitement. I am so happy that most of the reviews so far are quiet good and mostly everyone likes Jake and thinks he has done a good job.

The Ninja interview is interesting and fresh - will be interesting to see what happens with the Moon project. IMO Doug Limans films are very mixed quality - some are less than overwhelming like "Jumper" but the first "Bourne" movie was excellent and his new film "Fair Game" will be shown in Cannes and has created some good buzz.

Cannot wait for the Jonathan Ross show - "pickled onions" - I have to admit that over here we have also something like that - usually not only onions but its called "mixed pickles".....
