PoP Week: Canada Day

And another flashback - to yesterday. Jake being interviewed by Tribute.ca, and it's a great one. Did you ever wonder whom Jake would pick for a celebrity Amazing Race partner? Now you'll know!

Flashforward update: Jake on Regis and Kelly - thanks to Stephanie!

Canadians celebrate it on July 1, but for Jake Gyllenhaal and the Prince of Persia promotional express, Tuesday was Canada Day. Jake made appearances on the CBC, MTV and a few other outlets.

According to one blogger, the MTV spot was a little wild:

Repeatedly throughout the program, girls would call out inappropriately, "Jake, show us your abs!", which later escalated to "Jake, show us your snake!" after he described the process of working with a Snake Trainer. Taking the situation in stride, he responded "Well played. I like your style". The show's frustrated hosts eventually had to silence the rowdy audience, which again saw girls interrupting Gyllenhaal as he was trying to thank Canadians for their support. Jokingly, he pointed at his abs, stating "I realize that this is a big weekend for the ladies.... but this (pointing at his abs) is Sex in the City. Why see Sex and The City 2 when you can watch Prince of Persia twice?". Charmer.

The eTalk appearance provoked a lot of happy tweets from audience members and participants and jealousy from those left out.

One after another, my friends bombed my Blackberry with Jakey love. And all of them noted first that it was his charm, his personality, that came before the hotness. He is funny and dorky and really nice and sweet with the bluest blue eyes and the sexiest sh-t eating smirk, all of it enhanced by that elusive “star quality”. Jake Gyllenhaal is a Movie Star. A true Movie Star. And remember, this isn’t coming from superfan losers and stalkers. This is observation from people who work with celebrities every day, they see it all the time. For jaded television people, the default position is to dislike. Somehow Jakey G swept through that building and won them all.

Here's a clip from The Hour:

In case you missed it in the last post, Jake also did some roundtable interviews, which were recorded. Worth a listen, as there are some different questions.

USA Today talks about Jake's "deferred childhood" and the familiar theme of taking himself less seriously. The director has a nice summation:

But Newell says that Gyllenhaal was not only the film's muscle, but its emotional core.

"With video (game adaptations), you're always looking for the human equivalent," Newell says. "You need an actor who can almost breathe emotion. I knew from Brokeback Mountain (Gyllenhaal) could do that. And it didn't hurt that he could build that kind of physique and look good on a horse."

No, that does not hurt, Mike!

Speaking of Jake on horseback, Moviefone asked Jake about one of Oscar's biggest blunders:

It seems like everybody looks at "'Brokeback Mountain' vs. 'Crash'" as one of the biggest Oscar upsets. Do you ever get flustered over that, or do you feel like those events are out of your control?

The irony is we made that movie for 12 million dollars. And I know that's a lot of money, but in the world of making movies, compared to something like 'Prince of Persia,' it's very small. And it had this massive success financially [and] critically. To me -- and I really don't mean to seem like a cliché -- but I have people come up to me on the street daily who say that a movie like 'Brokeback Mountain' changed their life. Award or no award, it doesn't matter. What matters is an audience has seen it and has been moved. Yeah, I think there's a want in everybody to say, "I want to win this, or do this." But I think in the end, we won so many times with that movie, it's amazing. That experience I know will be with me for the rest of my life, in so many ways.

I'd never heard Jake asked specifically about the Oscar upset.

In a bold time-traveling maneuver, Jake also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel "Live" Tuesday night, where he discussed pancakes, photo bombs and princes, all in a Russian accent:

Traveling back in time to last week, here's Part 1 of the Popsugar video of the special fan screening. Just a few glimpses of Jake, but lovely ones:

Thanks, anon. Updated the post.

Due to some problems with my computer (hopefully fixed this evening by a friend) I am not able to watch all the videos or hear the radio interviews.

But IMO Jake looks so good in Canada. I am in a minority but I love his hair - that brownish colour contrasting with the Big Blues....!!

The MTV report made me laugh - hopefully some of those crazy girls will be watching PoP now instead of SATC this weekend.....

Some folks over at BOM are thinking PoP will be doing less than 40M over the 4-day-weekend. I so hope they will be proven wrong....

UltraViolet said...

I've seen those BOM predictions, too, Carla. I dearly hope they are wrong.

I hope you get your audio/video problems fixed soon.

I like Jake's hair like this, too. I think he looks great. And he didn't wear chinos, so I'm thrilled :)

Sex in the City has a late night showing on Wed. and then full showings on Thursday and then has the rest of the holiday weekend.
The Dragon movie underperformed its first week and then word of mouth kept it going to where it was very successful.

I usually cannot stand Associated Press wire service stories, but the review they gave SATC2 was "wonderful."

Heh, heh.

Regis & Kelli: Jake and Kelli Ripa were exchanging "looks." My, my.

The advertising for Shrek is very intense, including MacDonald's tie-ins.I think the higher costs of seeing it in 3D hurt the BO.

I'd love to PoP break $55M. But in general, BO has been down the past couple of weeks or so.

Jake has a big front page feature in today's USA Today. Nothing new (except a cute tidbit about Maggie and British accents), but it was great to see him in the spotlight.

The best part was that USA Today placed their withering 1 1/2 star review of SATC on the same page with the Jake loving feature! :)

Oooops! Sorry for duplicating the USA Today article. Have I mentioned that I'm still playing catch up on all the Jake related news here? :)

I love the Kimmel interview and Jake's Russian accent!

I want the giant lego Dastan, I'll pass on the Kimmel one:)

Thanks for the links to the Canadian interviews. I don't think that Jake or anyone else associated with BBM has ever been asked about that night. Thanks so much for posting it.

I do think that the price for 3-D S4 hurt it at the BO. Pop has a 60 fresh rating on RT which is good. I have my fingers crossed for a big BO this Memorial day weekend.

SATC2 looks like crap but it will make $$$ no matter how bad the reviews are.

I see that Kelly hasn't changed much since her AMC days Bobbyanna, believe me the looks on her part was real:))

jake looked great on jk loved his outfit and as always very funny

UltraViolet said...

He did look great, Mary. He looked pretty good on Regis, too. Just updated the post with those clips, from Stephanie.

Bobbyanna, I'll have to read that review. Sadly, SatC is now at a rollicking 9% on RT. But the zero was fun while it lasted. This is my favorite review snippet:

makes The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert look like The Remains of the Day.

no problem for the duplication, suvee. It's impossible to remember who read what where. Not sure I like the USA today photo, but it's different, at least. The article was pretty good, too, though familiar ground was covered.

I like it that the SatC pan was posted prominently next to it!

Chica, I think Kelly has always had a thing for Jake. Who can blame her?

The Kimmel LEGO was hilarious! It was also fun to see Jake mock Tom Cruise a little.

And I loved the Russian accent, especially "Bubble Boy."

Jake was seriously funny, charming and sexy on Kimmel!! Just when I thought he couldn't make me swoon more, he does...sigh...swoon! ;p

I haven't had time to watch the other interviews yet but can't wait until later today.

Also, I LOVE that they showed Jake's photo bombs of Ang Lee on JK...LOL!! And the Gaby one too. :D

UltraViolet said...

Yes! I wish Jimmy had pushed Jake on the Oscar photo bombs to find out a little more, but it's so funny that he even mentioned them.

And Jake looked great. He hasn't disappointed yet :)

I know the post is overloaded, but you MUST watch the video I just posted. Jake is playful and hilarious. Lucky Bonnie Laufer!

Look away, Bobbyanna - I'm going to quote Lainey:

And suvee, she mentions the smirk!

I know she's annoying, but I do like it when she gushes about Jake.

Now THAT was a lot of fun! Lucky Bonnie indeed!

All of it has been fun leading up to this film. :-)

Two things I found memorable in recent interviews: In one of the Canadian ones from yesterday, Jake was asked if it was true he was thrown out of a band for dating the drummer's girlfriend. He said,"The word dating is a euphemism."

The other was the story he told on Regis, of Maggie "directing" him in "Cats". I can actually "see" it happening.:)

And i bet he still knows where that girl is....
SATC is getting horrible reviews overall, tho am sure that won't stop people from seeing it, but don't think it will come up to the quality the fans will be wanting.

bobbyanna said...

Here's a link to the SATC2 review from the AP that "won my heart"...so to speak. :)

Bobbyanna, what interview is this from? I think i've missed something :S

UltraViolet said...

yeah, I missed it, too, Bobbyanna!

There is a new fun interview in the new post. I just couldn't jam one more thing into this one!

I included Bonnie Laufer again, because she was just too good for people not to see.
