There is one man

We'll have to be on the lookout for the July issue of Empire Magazine:

With Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time now in post-production, Jake Gyllenhaal and Mike Newell took time to give us the low-down on the Bruckheimer sword-and-sandal epic for Empire's soon-to-hit-stores July issue.

As Dastan, Gyllenhaal is charged with battling the shadowy cult of assassins The Hanssansin, a heroic role that the newly-buff leading man claims says him to the role. (ed. huh?)"I'm always fascinated with these kinds of stories of the hero's journey," Gyllenhaal told us. "You're playing a legitimate hero, you know? I think it's an honour to do that."

Newell, meanwhile, says there's much more to Prince Of Persia than Gyllenhaal roaming the sixth century with his top off.

But Newell's promising that his leading man will have the tools to meet all this divine fury blow-for-blow. "There's this wonderful line - and I can't remember where this comes from - which says, 'So long as there is just one man, you can't kill us all...'"

I can't wait to see the finished producet.

Until then, it's good to know the Disney machine is gearing up.

Cannes Revisited

Updated - scroll down for some pics of Jake from the weekend. Thanks to Stephanie/IHJ, as always.

The 2009 Cannes Film Festival just concluded, awarding the Palme d'Or to The White Ribbon. And Heath's last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, had its first public screening, one that will hopefully lead to a distribution deal.

This all led us to think back to the 2007 festival and Jake Gyllenhaal's Cannes debut. The official Cannes site has archives of past years, and naturally, we had to check out the 2007 archives, which yielded a few Zodiac hidden gems. There are four videos of interest: the press conference, the photocall, the red carpet, and a highlight reel.

The photocall has a short snippet of an interview done with the main players in some kind of cabana-like room. I've never seen this footage. Not a lot of Jake but it's fun to see something new/old:

The highlight reel is notable for a few seconds from the cabana:

And also for the only shots I've ever seen of Jake, et al., inside the theater after the screening. I think Jake enjoys taking his bows:

I captured the end of the video, but not well. Definitely worth clicking on the links yourself - it's always great to see Jake beaming like this. It's a shame Zodiac wasn't more enthusiastically received by U.S. movie audiences - or the Academy!

Hope you enjoy your holiday trip down le chemin de la mémoire!

Playing The Field

Did I say it was a slow day around here? Things can pick up fast :)

Jake Gyllenhaal watching Reese Witherspoon at softball practice.

Oh, here are a few of pictures of Jake actually watching!

I posted this in the replies just before closing the last post. A cute Jake and Reese sighting:

Susan Feniger – of City Restaurant, Ciudad and Border Grill fame – opened The Street (restaurant) on Highland and Melrose last month, and it has a large outdoor seating area, as well as an indoor one – and is open and serving food from around the world till at least 11 PM – hard to find hours these days. The food is modeled on street food from India, China, Malaysia and all around the world – and the cocktail selection is equally exotic. But maybe even cooler than the smart well-informed waiters, casual environment, cool crowd and outdoor seating – was the spotting of Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon dining there. What a cool sighting – they were holding hands and laughing, and no one bothered them at all – but everyone knew they were there. It’s very fun to hang there late-night.

"What is this?"

It's movie time. It's going to be a gray Sunday here. Perfect weather for a Jake Gyllenhaal marathon. Of course, we all have all of Jake's flicks, so here are some rare videos from The Vault. Pop some popcorn, sit back and enjoy.

First up is a hilarious interview from the promotion for The Day After Tomorrow:

I think that's the only time I've ever heard Jake mention his uncle.

Present day - not funny at all. Brief clip of Jake and Reese arriving at LAX from Europe:

Back to the vault for a snippet of an interview with Jake and Mary McDonnell, aka Mrs. Darko:

You just get to see Jake briefly (but more clearly) at the beginning of this one and hear him at the end:

Such a tease. I'd love to see that whole interview!

Now it's 2005 and Jake's in Maui and the Arctic Circle, as seen on Entertainment Tonight:

Flash forward to the present - because who can ever see enough of this clip?

Happy viewing!

Behind The Blame

Some very brief behind the scenes footage of the "Blame It" video. Predictably but sadly, it's heavy on the Jamie Foxx and light on the Jake Gyllenhaal. Maybe there's more in a vault somewhere. The same place where they are keeping Nailed, perhaps.

Behind the scenes shots of a different kind - a couple of Coachella snaps. Backstage for Fleet Foxes and then getting some grub:

At long last, Brothers?

Well, maybe a bit longer. According to Coming Soon, Brothers has a release date:

Lionsgate has set a December 4, 2009 release date for the Jim Sheridan-directed Brothers, starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman.

It's a long time (more) to wait, but maybe this means they do have awards hope for it?

Also, I'm hoping this isn't just a retread of last year's 12/4 release date rumor. Of course, that never made sense, since 12/4/08 was a thursday. But it's a Friday this year.

In honor of a good friend:

Hope you're smiling brightly somewhere tonight, Mollie.

A Mother's Day Treat

From Jerry Bruckheimer and the Mouse - the first real footage of Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia.

When asked by the unctuous interviewer what Jake brings to the role, Bruckheimer replies that Jake is "very handsome and in great shape. And he's a brilliant actor, which is what it's all about." Amen!

It's great to see a brief glimpse of Jake in training - I expect reels and reels of that stuff on the DVD. And the movie, and Jake, both look amazing.

Not to wish a year away, but is it May, 2010 yet?

Did some additional caps- if you click on them, they are bigger than the previous ones.

Thanks to the anon who tipped us off and to Sean, who posted it on youtube. Caps are ours, until Stephanie makes some good ones :)
