Casual Wednesday

As wonderful as the past weeks have been, it's good to see Jake Gyllenhaal out of the Prince of Persia promotional uniform and back wandering the streets of LA for beverages and the odd bellhop job.

What would a post be without videos? Among today's selections, Jake reveals that PoP is actually a true story:

All about the accent - and Sir Ben thinks Jake should play 007:

This was posted in the replies, but in case you missed it - Jake notices an interviewer's dental decoration:

Jake talks about bad hair days and Nicolas Cage:

A longer version of the Yillenhoolahay interview, where Jake, Ben and Mike discuss Jake's accent:

It's been hectic these last days, so we'll go with a casual post today, too. Unless the day brings more goodies!

See - just had to include this. A real rave for PoP and for Jake from the Times of London:

As for Gyllenhaal, well he deserves a whole paragraph to himself. Can this be the same sensitive fellow who got off his high horse in Brokeback Mountain? He has acquired an entirely new body with more six-packs than a Glaswegian carry-out, and pecs perfectly designed for the inevitable kids’ pop-up book of the film. He exudes a sweet innocence while giving a tremendous physical performance. Newell says that Gyllenhaal did most of his own stunts and trained obsessively at 5.30am before the sun roasted the set in Morocco. His leaps from rooftop to rooftop and pillar to post are CGI-aided, but nonetheless courageous.

Haven't seen Tweety the last day or so - probably buried under the avalanche of Jake tweets. Saw an interesting one last night that Jake showed up at a PoP screening at the Arclight and made someone's night by taking a photo with her.

Who knows where he'll show up today!

Perhaps he wants to see the reactions of the normal filmgoer...:-)

I enjoyed the IGN videos and the Sport-Center one. I am not familiar with the Lakers and Celtics but it looks like Basketball is for the Americans what the football and the world team cup is for us Europeans.

So much goodies during the last weeks - it is difficult to catch up with everything.

I like him seeing doing his usual, daily stuff - walking, holding coffee, talking to a friend (the woman looks familiar)....

And I found the link of the "PoP hair report" I mentioend yesterday:

Dastans Hair

I almost didn't recognize Mr G in his casual gear, he has been dressed to the nines the last week or so!

Bell Hop, LOL! The woman does look familiar.

Thanks so much for all the pics and photos, he looked sharp on the red csrpet. What an exciting time for him, you can tell from all the interviews he is proud and this is his moment. Imagine Jake popping in at your theater at a Pop screning, lucky fans!

Thanks for your review Carla. I have heard the same complaints about the ending but overall they like it like you.

Looks like the name of the blog was changed, LOL!!

Sir Ben on The ABC Morning show mentioning how he could pinpoint just where Jake's accent was from in London. Once again saying how good he thought it was.
Any comments in articles about not being sure about the accent tho means the people haven't seen the movie and don't know what they're talking about and also probably thinking that's what they are suppose to say. Laziness in journalism. (If that's actually journalism).
Also was thinking about the Premieres and the first one you get asked all the questions and by the 3rd one you're hearing the same things overall and what more can you say. Jake's interviews next week will probably include a lot we have heard because unless he talks about another movie there isn't much more to say.
Which reminds me by the Fall he'll be back again.

Did he elaborate on which part of London?

Due to the unexpected drop-in of my in-laws, I have been MIA from my computer!

The screeners have been good at keeping tight-lipped about Pop, just tweets that he was there and tweet pics.

I'm glad that Ben is giving his thumbs up on Jake's accent and that Jake addresses the Non-Persian "controversy" in the IGN interviews. It's a sill arguement as it has already been pointed out already.

He is so relaxed and at ease in the IGN interviews.

I went back to the previous post and read your review Carla.

A great review, glad that the rest of the audience enjoyed the ride!

The one question I do have is that are any of the battle scenes really violent or are they just intense?

That lady in distress looks familair in these pics, is that his Rep??

It's weird seeing him dressed down now and w/o his BG!

I think Sir Ben has developed a genuine fondness for Jake.

One thing I noticed at the L.A. premiere, they all seemed more comfortable talking about the possibility of a frachise/sequel.

I almost dread the "aftermath," when PoP's finally winding up it's run, and Jake has disappeared from daily view, for some well-deserved R&R. I know I'll be having withdrawal symptoms!

Poor Jake! Looks like the daylight is hurting his eyes.:)

I really do think Ben Kingsley likes Jake - he gushes about him. Remember a while back, there was that brief clip of him talking about how confident Jake was. Not arrogant but supremely confident.

FL, apparently Ben thinks Jake's accent was NW5, which pleased Jake in this clip (added to the post). But Mike Newell disagrees and says it was further down the river.

Tweety, hope you don't mind the surprise in-law visit!

Carla, I laughed at that hair article. Good to know it's accurate for the time :)

Someone on IHJ mentioned that German reviewers hate PoP, but I remember your saying it was well received. I'm sure it's a bit of a mix, but I just wanted to check with you on that.

For those keeping score, the PopcornMeter (Netherlands equivalent of the Tomatometer) has it at 55% (11 positive/9 negative).

I'm sure you've all been dying for that information!

Also posted a clip where Jake talks about Nicolas Cage and his hair.

POP is 55%(6 positive and 5 negative) at RT and 63% on Metacritic.

I wanted to see the film next week, but I will have to wait until the 04th of June!

UltraViolet said...

Here's the AOL bit with Ben Kingsley.

This German interview has an interesting part: Jake says that working with Gemma was like something Anthony Hopkins once described: NAR or No Acting Required.

Jake talks about Damn Yankees and says to see PoP instead of SatC if you want to watch people who really know how to ride camels!

UltraViolet said...

Oh, forgot to say, Tweety, that I think that might be a PopSugar person. But seriously, did these screening attendees have to swear vows of silence? We've gotten practically nothing from any of them!

Carla said...

"Someone on IHJ mentioned that German reviewers hate PoP, but I remember your saying it was well received"

No, thats simply not true. I don´t know where she got that, but most of the reviews were positive to mixed, not overwhelming, but descent. Most of them liked Jake.
I even checked some Gamers magazines and they were also positive.

"The one question I do have is that are any of the battle scenes really violent or are they just intense?"

Minor Spoiler!!

Tweety, there is only one real "battle" scene - the one at the beginning, but this one is nowhere near what we would call "epic". You cannot compare this to the battle scenes from "Lord of the Rings" (to give an example).

IMO there are no real violent scnes in the whole film - only the hassasins are a bit creepy.

Thanks for the information on RT and Metacritic, Monica. Metacritic is more reliable because their calculating system makes sense.

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for the confirmation, Carla. Maybe I'll g on IHJ and reassure her :)

Here's a great PoP review from the Times of London:

Prince of Persia is terrifically good fun, with a pleasing balance of sword-swinging action and zinging irony. ...

His leaps from rooftop to rooftop and pillar to post are CGI-aided, but nonetheless courageous. ...

Embrace this franchise; it’s one of the better ones, and I assume by the Sands of Time subtitle that there will be many more Princes of Persia to come.

Yay! After so many sort of middling reviews, though most with praise for Jake, it's nice to read an out and out positive one.

Sag actor said...

Kingsley does seem to like Jake, and it's sounds geniune, not fake nice like some actors are when promoting films.

Metacritic does a better job calculating reviews than Rottentomatoes.

That is a great review from the London Times!

UltraViolet said...

Ben has a little man crush, I think. Hee. But really, everyone who works with Jake seems to like him. I saw a quote from Gemma yesterday about how there's "just something about Jake" that draws people to him.

I meant to include this link in my last poat. Someone on the PoP IMDb threads is compiling a list of reviews. So far, 50 positive and 9 negative.

Most of the positives are not raves, but still - it's definitely more good than bad.

bobbyanna said...

OT but not: You may've heard that Megan Fox got dumped from Transformers 3. I've just read that Gemma will be replacing her.
So Gemma is definitely the action movie go-to girl of the hour.

Jake will be on MTV Tonight:

Time: 10:00 PM
Channel: MTV

A short audio bit of Jake talking about twitter. No he doesn't have an account and never did. The interviewers brought up the fake Jake twitter account that caused a bit of a ruckus:

http://www.screen-one.com/audio/prince-persia-jake-gyllenhaal-i-dont-twitter

No FB either. I can't believe that people actually thought that assclown was Jake.

Thanks for the MTV info anon.!

I saw the Sir Ben interview on GMA this morning and I loved that George S. said that Jake had a North London accent and Ben said it was a perfect accent! :) He really does seem to have a mancrush on Jake, UV. It is great that Jake's co-stars seem to really respect and like him.

Thanks for the reviews, so thrilled to see Jake get such praise!

Nice to see Jake back in his relaxed mode. ;)

Thanks for the audio Tweety. Let that be a lesson to all the fake!Jake's on Twitter and Facebook.

I was just over at IHJ and saw that Jake will be on Jimmy Fallon on the 26th...squee!!! Love Jimmy and the Roots. I know Jake will have a great time with him. :)

I didn't know that Ben was on GMA today, i'm sure it will turn up on youtube. He really likes and respects Jake. I don't think we have ever heard any of Jake's co-stars say a bad word about him.

I'm so happy to read and hear that he is giving Jake the thumbs up on his accent, that was a concern to some along with Dastan's hair (thanks for that link Carla!)

Jake on MTV? I'll think I'll wait for it to be posted here, I will watch Jake on anything, except MTV, just no.

We haven'r seen Jake in hoodie mode in awhile, glad to see him get some down time.

I'm loving all of the positive reviews!!!

I saw that fake Jake twitter and the sad thing is that it didn't seem like it was just 14 year old fangirls that thought he was real.

Some people are willing to believe anything, celebrties that have twitter have verified accounts.

Jimmy Fallon has a talk show Monica, taped in NY.

Thanks, tweety. I searched on google and found he did a movie with the skinny Giselle Bundchen!

It is cool to hear Sir Ben say such nice, complimentary things about Jake. He really does seem sincere in his appreciation. And if he says that Jake's accent is spot on, that's all I need to know.

How sweet is that Times of London PoP review? That was wonderful to read...... thanks, UV!

I know that next week is U.S. talk show Jake extravaganza, but I am so bummed that there's no The Daily Show appearance! That's the one show I most look forward to seeing Jake appear on. I love the interplay between Jake and Jon. Can you imagine the fun Jon would have needling Jake about the hair and buff bod? :)

Really happy to see that positive review from the Times of London.

This has been such a great week, and Gyllenbabble has been on the job! Thanks again.

Monica said...

Currently the film is 60% on RT (12 positive and 8 negative).

Thanks for the review from the Times, UV.

UltraViolet said...

You're quite welcome, LG :) It has been so hectic keeping the blog updated, I can't imagine how Jake feels actually doing all this stuff.

Chica, the MTV programs were unwatchable, especially the first one. Thank goodness for DVR and FF.

Suvee, I'm bummed about the Daily Show, too. Damn Jon Stewart for taking a vacation! On the upside, I bet he'll do TDS for LaOD. And you know Jon will still make fun of the PoP hair.

Tweety, thanks for the tweets and for that audio of Jake re: Twitter. It was funny to hear his reaction.

I'm curious to see Jake on Jimmy Fallon, too, get real. It will be fun to see if they have any kind of rapport. JF isn't a great interviewer, IMO, but he gets guests to do some fun bits.

Monica, Jimmy Fallon also used to be on Saturday Night Live.

Lots of tweets and FB posts from people who have seen PoP and liked it. Some negative, too, of course. But it feels as if there's more love than hate.

Anonymous said...

I think someone mentioned this before but I think POP is one of those movies certain people are afraid to admit they liked. Maybe because it's Disney, maybe because it's a film targetted towards gamers/kids, I don't know.

I think these people are kind of surprised how much they liked the film.

Trust me when I say Sir Ben Kingsley's praise of Jake is genuine. This man doesn't pull punches and is not afraid to say what's on his mind. Jake has totally charmed him and broken through that hard exterior. Sir Ben seems to have opened up like a flower, I've never seen him like that before.

If a Brit says the accent was good, believe it. I too was very skeptical whether Jake could pull it off as I heard him try it before in 2004 (it was horrible). But, I adore Jake for his perserverance. Imagine talking to a British crew that would tell you to your face that it's horrible, day in, day out and constantly trying to nail the accent down. He didn't give up. He did it - so well - and earned the admiration and respect of the cast and crew.

The accent does vere into different areas of London but on the whole it was very, very authentic. I doff my cap to you sir!

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Kingsley's praise is wonderful to hear, I love that man! Jake worked so hard on the accent and I bet he was nervous about the reaction. It's good to know that he pretty much nailed it Sheba!

Too bad Jon is on vacation next week because you know that Jake would have stopped by. Looking forward to him on Letterman and Kimmel, not so much Regis and Kelly and Fallon, they irritate me.

But hey Jake doing any talk show is a plus!

Love the Times of London review, thanks UV. The reviews seem to be running mixed/positive so far.

The Jake on twitter thing is too funny!

Tweety said...

I forgot to thank you Carla for answering my question about any violent scenes in Pop! I know it's rated PG-13, bit I was thinking that was probably done for the fanboys/gamers who would probably cringe at the thought of going to a PG rated film.

And speaking of Sir Ben, he will be appearing on C. Ferguson tonight!
