Men in blue

Updated to add these portraits of Jake and Michael from TIFF. Men in blue, indeed:

That second one looks like it belongs to an entirely different movie...

Jake Gyllenhaal has been in Toronto for the world premiere of End of Watch and promotion for the movie. And the reviews are in!

Jake Gyllenhaal was eloquent and intelligent today as he answered questions for his latest movie END OF WATCH...

#EndofWatch rounds all done! Jake is the dreamiest and Anna Kendrick is hysterical! Great gang all around. #TIFF12

Jake Gyllenhaal,Toronto on his End of Watch about 2 cop pals:Real friendship is understanding the mess that you are & the mess that they are

Where in the sprawl is Jake Gyllenhaal? Apparently the Intercontinental cause @liztrinnear and I just walked past him

I can't stop thinking about #EndOfWatch. Jake & Michael are incredible in it. It will change the way you look at cops forever #WatchYourSix

Jake Gyllenhaal just told me a dramatic event that happened while making #EndOfWatch completely changed his life. Read how in @hellocanada

END OF WATCH. better than expected LA cop movie by the writer of TRAINING DAY. chemistry between the two lead actors is what carries the film through large parts.

Still mulling End Of Watch; two films in one, not sure if they meet. Some excellent moments, though. #TIFF

And a Dutch tweet, plus translation:

Net interviews voor 4 films gedaan. Das 7 gesprekken... Lopendebandwerk. Voor End of Game, Sessions, Iceman en Byzantium...

Plus: Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes en Michael Shannon. Min: Neil Jordan. Hij was moe, t was te rumoerig etc. Had ik ook last van #be a pro!

Just interviews for 4 movies done. Das seven conversations ... Assembly Line Work. For End of Game, Sessions, Iceman and Byzantium ...

Plus: Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes and Michael Shannon. Min: Neil Jordan. He was tired, it was too noisy so I could also suffer from # be a pro!

Rave review from a site I hadn't heard of before.

I'm beginning to think that Jake's hair length is related more to a new part than a play. It way longer than I have ever seen it before except POP. It's becoming more apparent than the beard. Just IMO.

Added an interview with Jake Hamilton, who's interviewed Jake many times in the past.

Scott, I agree that the hair is enormous. But I can't imagine what the part would be. He's in the play until the end of November. Unles he's playing Samson.

Critic James Rocchi, who gave EoW 3/5 stars:

Just had a lively, frank and -- on both sides -- blunt interview with END OF WATCH writer-dir david Ayer on cop films, race, law, everything

This, this is when I love my great job most.

Hopefully, he'll post more about it.

I was just reading box office mojo's editorial if you will about tbe box office for this past weekend. Both Henry Cavill and Brad Cooper had huge bombs this weekend, Bradley's second in a row but the writer simply let's them off the hook as it not being their fault and that they need help in the film material and marketing efforts but I can't recall them ever extending the same courtesy to Jake. It just really ticked me off.

Monica, that Tom Hardy guy is horrible loooking, I do not understand how anyone can find that man attractive, ick.

UltraViolet said...

That is really annoying, anon. And frustrating. Just as other stories give credit to actors for overseas appeal but never mention that for Jake.

Scott, a lot of people would say the same thing about photos of Jake. To each, his or her own.

Glad the embargo is finally lifted and I can finally say how great END OF WATCH is. Could be a dark horse this award season #WatchYourSix

END OF WATCH is certainly bad-ass, but the reason it makes such a strong impression is the natural chemistry b/t GREAT leads Jake G. & Pena.

Scott, he is handsome and sexy to me. But most important is talent.
Hardy is better than most of these actors that Hollywood insists on pushing us every day.
I'd love to see him work with Jake one day.

U absolutely believe those 2 partners would die for each other, which raises the stakes. It's abt brothers within a brotherhood. Good stuff!

Those Variety guys really like EoW! I'm still not going to hold my breath for awards. Better to be surprised :)

Updated the post with some gorgeous shots of Jake and Michael.

Hee, hee at the Rasputin comparison,he looks like he should be in a Chekov play instead!

I'm giddy over the reviews for EOW, but I don't want to get my hopes up. We will soon see but damn I really didn't expect all this praise, i'm very pleasantly pleased !!!

Love the 2 top pics of Jake and Michael.

Ah, back to NY and the play. This is really an embarrassment of riches this month.

Another video posted, this time we get a little from Jake on his relationship with Michael. He's reluctant to say they didn't get along. David Ayer has the best line, on once they clicked: "Then they wouldn't shut up, and I missed the days when they didn't get along."

Mary said...

Thanks Uv look the first 2 pics of Michael and Jake

One last video of the day, a nice interview with someone who really seems to like Jake.

LOL. Jake had to watch Anna to do the dance:

Jake was not great at learning it, so sometimes he was watching me a little bit, in the movie.

Sarah Gadon was at TIFF and talked a bit about working with Jake. I think it's about three minutes in. She seems to enjoy Jake's style of acting.

One more tweet:

#EndOfWatch#KC-End of Watch is a visceral full frontal assault. If they gave Academy Awards to team acting End of Watch wins.Jake Gyllenhaal

Yahoo likes Jake.

UltraViolet said...

Mary, OONP, I love the photos, too. It was a nice surprise.

And not just because Jake looks less Rasputin-like :)

Box office projections of an unnamed movie theater chain (allegedly internal data, via HSX.com) for movies opening on September 21st:

House At the End of the Street : 18.0 (on its opening weekend)
Dredd 3D: 10.0
Trouble With the Curve: 18.0
End of Watch: 8.0

I hope EoW won't gross less money than "Brothers" (OW: $9.5 million, cumulative: $ 28.5 million). The data imply a chart entry at #6 ("Nemo" and "Resident Evil" are expected to do well.) The box office predicition for "Dredd" doesn't look good either. Apparently Jennifer Lawrence is supposed to be a box office draw after her role in "Hunger Games". Eastwood will still attract Republican seniors. LOL

Viv said...

Does anyone really believe EOW will gross less than "Brothers"?LOL

I'm by no means certain that EoW will be more successful than "Brothers".

Another solid review of EoW, this time from Collider (Grade: B-): "David Ayer‘s cop action flick End of Watch is consumed by found-footage gimmick it doesn’t need. The device feels forced upon the story, and is applied in such a haphazard fashion that its presence only become more of a distraction. Audiences don’t need a reason for certain camera angles; they need good characters, and End of Watch has them with great performances from lead actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña. The movie is driven by character, and while the camera-tricks vie for our attention, it’s the relationship between two beat cops that holds our interest."

Oops sorry Hagen ,not Haghen:)

Geez Haghen, Why so negative?:)

I'm not a pessimist by nature, I just think that market conditions are unfavorable for EoW. Americans seem to be spending money on bigger 'event' movies like "The Avengers" and family movies. This summer nearly all smaller movies haven't met box office expectations. Of course that's not Jake's fault, that's not David Ayer's fault; the marketing campaign for EoW is - as far as I can judge it - really good. I just think that the demand for movies like EoW is rather weak. A lot of people might want to save money and wait for the Netflix release.

Oops sorry Hagen ,not Haghen:)

No problem. :)

Viv said...

Don't jump the ship so soon.:)
I would rather see next week's prediction than this unknown theater chain prediction.
Actually this year's small movies did very well than you thought. It's big budget movies did poorly.EOW doesn't have to be a big hit, butI think it well be prfitable.

bobbyanna said...

I'm just happy for all the favorable reviews for the film, and especially that they've acknowledged the acting.

I am recalling the observation from Details article about how Jake really draws the best out of his acting partners.

Also noticing a somewhat "different" Jake in these interviews. He's friendly, but very serious. I know, the movie itself is serious, but Jake just seems more mature, for want of a better word. : )

I checked out Sarah Gadon's interview. She had to suppress a smile when asked about him. She sort of lit up.

It is difficult to make a market analysis, and also give right forecasts ten days before, Box office.com give completely different numbers, and usually they are reliable.Reviews are good indeed, and it seem that the passes word is working , so, we can just wait and see I guess, fingers crossed!:)

Wanted to take a moment to remember those who lost there lives on 9/11. I am glad today is being marked as a National Day of Service.

UltraViolet said...

Amen, Bobbyanna. This is a day that's hard to forget and difficult to remember.

Fingers crossed for the EoW box office. As with awards, I am not getting my hopes up.

Good video here. Can't embed it yet. Some of it we've seen. but there's some background stuff and some of it's new.

Interview with If There is playwright Nicholas Payne:

Did you have to adapt If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet for the American audience?

I re-wrote the play to try and improve it but I didn’t rewrite it in terms of making it more US audience friendly. I changed maybe two words which I knew wouldn’t work there. There is a speech about netball and no one knows what that is America, it’s completely alien, so people were asking me if it’s like volleyball. And there was a joke about Wetherspoon’s that didn’t work at all.

How different is the American theatre system compared to the London scene you’re used to?

There are differences. The sheer number of previews is very different. In America we had three weeks of previews whereas in the UK I’m used to four nights, or six. The way the previews ran made it difficult to make changes so it was strange watching the same show five times or so before making any changes to it.

And what has working with Jake Gyllenhaal been like?

It’s funny, and, for want of a better phrase, it was like having any actor in a show. When you are in the rehearsal it’s the same process irrespective of who is there, but he’s been great and is a real creature of the stage, even though he has only done one play before this. He has got a very acute sense of whether the audience is with him or not and you could see him changing his performance each night.

UV, so much information these last days. Love the photos you've updated!

I'm with Bobbyanna, I'm really happy if the critics acknowledge the acting, of course I love when Jake's movies do well on the box office, but if it doesn´t, if he feels good about the work and so his fans that's what is important.

OT: I'm going to be induce into labor tomorrow morning cause Sofia is feeling pretty good in my belly and does not want to come out, so keep positive thinking for me. As soon as I can i will came to tell you how it went.
