Catching up

It's neck-and-neck weekend, but Jake and the rest of the End of Watch gang are enjoying a stronger than expected performance at the box office.

We wont know until tomorrow, so in the meantime, let's catch up on all the interviews and stories we missed during this hectic week.

Jake on the best day of his career so far:

The Wrap

Jake and Michael have each other's back:

Jake and Michael spar:

Five Reasons To See EoW

Making Of:

Jake Gyllenhaal Interview by MakingOf

Jake and Michael prepare:

Michael's plan for Jake: Both sides of the camera: On crashing the car: David Ayer on Jake: My new favorite reporter asks Jake for details! OF course, he does repeat himself a bit, but there's some new stuff in there, too. Funny Anna Kendrick interview: Jake Gyllenhaal is great in this movie. He’s also got a great bald head. Did you touch his head a lot? I touched his head a lot. There is this scene at the end of the movie where I found myself touching his head a lot. I was like what is happening, why am I doing that? I like to see him all hairy again, it looks like a completely different person, but I like him scruffy. Yeah, what is it about bald heads that makes them so touchable? I don't know. I was doing it in that one scene but actually when I saw him at the premiere, the first thing I did was scratch his beard. I think I am more of a beard girl myself. From the NY Daily News: New York's Finest say gritty cop film 'End of Watch' is dead ringer for their lives on the beat/Cops say L.A.-based film starring Jake Gyllenhaal captures banter and brotherhood rarely conveyed on screen Jake is made an honorary Latino: Jake, you're an honorary Latino now. You do the Mexican zapateo dance in the film and I saw you at the ALMA Awards red carpet. You held your own!
JG: Am I an honorary Latino? Wait, no. Really? Are you just saying that? Cause I take that very seriously, so don't just throw that out there.
I declare you, as of this moment, an honorary Latino.
JG: Can you do that?
Of course I can. I can do anything I want!
JG: Ok. Wow, thank you…
How does it feel to be embraced by the community?
JG: It's really amazing. I've now had the opportunity to work with some incredibly talented Latino actors and be completely immersed in the culture at times. It was an honor to even be let into the world, you know. We used to joke on set, 'I bet you get to present at the ALMA Awards after you do this movie' and then I did! So I have to say it was a real honor for me and to be with him there at the ALMA's, with him not being embarrassed to be seen with me.
MP: Not at all! He's such a good buddy and such a good person at heart that I'm glad he came. He fully embraced it, too. There are some things you do because you're an actor, but he was genuinely into it, asking questions. He was really interested.

Is that John Lesher in the first screen capture off to the side?

Whoever it is, seems so proud of Jake. I get the feeling that Jake just grabs a hold of heart and he's there forever.

From the last post. First from roxie:

hey :) well meeting jake was cool. i went to his play and my friend told me her friends had met him afterwards so i tried but failed and i was heartbroken haha but anyways i knew i wanted to see the play again as it was so good so i went to the venue the next morning and got front row tickets. i was going to get rush tickets for a lot cheaper but front row for jake is once in a lifetime so i got them instead haha it was a good decision! and anyway i waited again and got a photograph but he was in a rush, i was the only one he got a photograph with. we went another time because my friend wanted to meet him and truth be told, i have loved jake for years and wanted to see him as much as i could before i left new york. i always said i wouldn’t waste time anywhere for celebs, especially not new york city but i couldn’t help myself. for a minute i thought he wasn’t a nice person because he wouldnt take photographs or speak to anyone whilst he was smoking on his break but to be honest it was some guy telling us no and not jake but i thought maybe if jake knew we were there he should have said it was ok but whatever i’m going to let it go as the night after we ended up back at the theater for opening night and he was lovely. we both got photographs along with everyone else. didn’t get chance to speak to him but it was a good experience anyway. he is my favourite actor and it was incredible getting to see him act in real life, he is just amazing. if you get chance to go see him in the theater then do, you will probably be able to meet him too. just make sure you take a pen, once i thought he was weird with us because we didn’t have a pen he just ignored us and said “oh, no pen” hahaha but me and my friend just find it hilarious now. i wish he tried to find a pen off someone else for us but oh well. my friend got me his auto in the end anyways on my playbill. i probably need a restraining order. xo
Photo

Wow, Roxie, you put your time in! And what a great photo. You both look great :) (I might use it in a future post unless you object. We probably need a fan photo catch up.)

Thanks so much for sharing the story and the photo.

I can't say I'd blame Jake for not wanting to talk to people when he goes out for his cigarette break. He is still in character, still working.

I've seen a lot of pen issues in after play videos and in the EoW premiere videos. He seems very focused on the pens. Maybe it gives him a way to distract himself from the weirdness of the situation.

Did you get wet sitting in the front row?

(I'm going to copy your post and my answer to the next post, which I've finally put up.)

Stefanie, I did enjoy the city, as I always do. It was a gorgeous day, and we wandered over to Bryant Park after the play. Had a great dinner with old friends. And now it's back to reality.

The best part was seeing Jake onstage :)

Yay, Duncan Jones:

@ManMadeMoon Have you seen End of Watch yet? Did you like it?

@Sasha4Jake very much, and Jake is great in it of course!

@ManMadeMoon Thanks for letting me know. It won't come out in Germany until Dec. 21st - long wait but Source Code will get me there!

Have to say again that I love those twitter peeps who engage and ask questions. Gives a lot of info to the rest of us.

UltraViolet said...

Anon, I can't see the screen capture for some reason. It does seem that Jake got very close to this crew. I just read a story where he talked about that first ride-along, and how he called Jon Lesher on his way home, trying to process what he'd seen and what he was attempting to do.

Anonymous said...

I had a thought maybe I am way off but it could be Jake does not want to offend anyone during his smoking breaks by coming up on them to sign autographs. You know, smokers breath or smoke on him (not that Jake's breath does not always smell like candied apples). Or its just a matter of time.

Mary said...

Really glad u enjoyed the play UV sure wih I could see it.

I went and saw EOW again today and its just as intense as the first time. The theater today was 3/4 fill more than yesterday and the audience response was more there was clapping and shouting after the first shooting scene, alot of laughing at the funny parts
and gasps at the most intense scenes and applause at the end.
I sure hope EOW is number one tomoorow it should I would think since it played in less theaters.

Assorted tweets and whatnot:

Thank you for doing such a phenomenal job in End of Watch. Thank you for taking on that role. Who knows if you will see this. Just know that there is a cop wife out there that appreciates what you had to endure to make this movie.

How cool would it be to be jake gyllenhall

Series:

Okay. We love Lucy Liu. One of the few shows I'm actually looking forward to this season. #elementary #emys

Oh Christ. Babybabybabybaby. #emmys

speaking of baby. Jake Gyllenhaal was in the basement at 30 Rock with his entourage. I didn't see him, but boy I'd I had

I wonder if that was to see Marcus and the boys on SNL last night.

BoxOffice.com posts stats on twitter, Facebook and blog mentions. EoW was leading the pack last week, and things definitely exploded over the weekend. Website comments and Twitter mentions for EoW:

Very nice positive to negative ratio. And did someone post that Jimmy Fallon (JFLN), Jake and End ofWatch were all trending Friday.

Oh, Mary, I forgot to say I could totally relate that you went to see the movie because you couldn't wait for your sister! It's great to hear that the theater had more people today.

I forgot to say that I saw it Friday night. It is intense and MP and Jake are great together. Loved Natalie MArtinez and Anna K, as well. I have to say that I'm surprised it's gotten such praise. Surprised but delighted.

I'll try to think of more specific comments. I guess I'l have to see it again :)

Anon, 8:07, I think he just doesn't want to be bothered when he's in the middle of a performance. I se nothing wrong or even surprising about that.

Rolling Stone Magazine: "WINNER OF THE WEEK: End of Watch. At this writing, End of Watch is actually tied with House at the End of the Street, with both movies claiming $13 million debuts in early Sunday estimates, while Trouble With the Curve is just a nose behind with an estimated $12.7 million opening. By the time final numbers are in on Monday, any one of these three could be the box office champ. Still, just for finishing in such rarefied company, End of Watch deserves the most credit. The found-footage cop drama has a restrictive R rating, limited star power (sorry, Jake Gyllenhaal, but you're no Clint Eastwood or even Jennifer Lawrence) and a distributor (Open Road Films) that's only put out one previous $10-million-plus opener (January's The Grey). As a result, Watch was expected to open only at around $9 to $11 million. So it's this week's winner just for outperforming its modest expectations."

Viv said...

I don't think so-called star power can effect box office that much nowadays(for example,Ted vs. The Expendables 2),sorry... Rolling Stone edtors.XD

Lucky for Jennifer Lawrence has The Hunger Game fans backup.

Some people think some male movie stars are HOT right mow(aka Ryan Gosling,Tom Hardy, Bradly Cooper,Ryan Renolds or JGL.. does that mean they have limited star power??), and they just can't transform it to box office.

Anonymous said...

Bradly Cooper 2 bombs in a row.

Viv said...

Studios used to think Bradly Cooper is a box office draw after The Hangover and Limitless.

Viv said...

By the way, the rating on IMDB is ...wow...unbelievable.Even though I know it will decrease for sure, i am still in shock.XD

Anonymous said...

Yes and what about Robert Pattinson, No one give a shit about his other movies.

UltraViolet said...

As Monica said, Maggie was probably trending because of her new movie. I think there was an ad for it on the Emmys. It's also being pilloried by teachers' unions for being anti-teacher.

In more Emmy talk:

Nigel Sinclair is basking in success of end of watch; next up one-name titles snitch and rush.

He was a producer on EoW, the one some people mistook for Stephen Gyllenhaal.

If There Is is the Critic's Pick in NY Magazine:

Jake Gyllenhaal, it turns out, is a stage actor of innate instinct: Whether he’s delivering a laugh line, getting lost in playwright Nick Payne’s trademark ellipses, or tossing furniture into the Plexiglas sluice director Michael Longhurst has attached to the lip of the stage, Gyllenhaal displays the intuitive understanding of theater-space — its exact dimensions and tolerances — that eludes so many film actors. He’s in perfect communication with hundreds of people while maintaining perfect intimacy with his scene partners. Not bad for a newbie.

They didn't like the play as much as Jake's performance.

An IMDb reviewer on Jake:

Frankly, I haven't been a fan of his. I never thought he was bad on screen; I just was never surprised by his choices as an actor.

But, having just seen him on stage in the British play "If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet", my opinion has changed. His performance was fresh, funny, surprising, affecting, alive every minute and completely believable - British accent and all. He was acting with a top-flight NY cast (including a favorite of mine, the Irish-American actor Bryan O'Byrne) and more than held his own.

One doesn't expect a handsome, sexy movie star to be an especially talented actor (especially on stage). This one is.

UltraViolet said...

You can't say Jennifer Lawrence is a draw yet, the same way, As Viv said, you can't say that about Korsten Stewart or Robert Pattinson.

Viv, the Rotten Tomatoes score has stayed really high, too. And the tweets and posts are all still overwhelmingly positive. It's a fun time.

Viv said...

Yes,that's what I mean.Hollywood jump on the bandwagon so fast.

For example,Taylor Lautner became a leading man right after Twilight and got paid A LOT in Abduction.Geez....

Wouldn't it be wild if Jake were up for an Oscar AND a Tony next year?

According to Wikipedia Off-Broadway shows are not eligible for Tony Awards.

UltraViolet said...

Yeah, no Tony for Jake. But that's just for now :) He can win an Obie, perhaps.

And I don't see his name being bandied about by the heavy hitter Oscar prognosticators. If EoW continues to do well, knock wood, maybe.

And look at this - is Jake going to have his first second picture with a director?:

Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Melissa Leo may cast End of Watch star Jake Gyllenhaal in the Dennis Villeneuve film scripted by Aaron Guzikowski.

The story tells of revolves around a small-town carpenter whose young daughter and best friend are kidnapped. When police fail to track them down, he decides to take matters into his own hands, and ends up against a big-city detective assigned to the case. Variety reports that Gyllenhaal's in talks to play the detective.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson of Alcon Entertainment are producing together with Kira Davis of 8:38 Productions and Adam Kolbrenner of Madhouse Entertainment. John Stark and Ed McDonnell are serving as executive producers.

Prisoners is scheduled to start production some time early 2013, with Warner Bros. Pictures sending the film to theaters in the Fall.

UltraViolet said...

LOL, Hagen, I don't think any of us saw it coming. I kept thinking, looking at all the tweets and positive posts, that it was going to do well. But I figured the box office types know more than I do about this stuff.

I don't tihnk they are very good at reading the last minute tea leaves.

Hagen said...

As much as I anticipate "An Enemy" I'm really glad that Jake's name is attached to a bigger budget production like "Prisoners". I think his sister offers a smart mix of small independent productions and big budget movies. Maybe Jake should emulate that.

UV, in retrospect all those box office projections were useless. I hope I'll remember that when Jake's next movies will be released. :)

Anonymous said...

UV the same here, but I was very optmist! :)

UltraViolet said...

Hagen, it will be hard to remember. Especially because An Enemy will be another indie release and hard to judge.

I don't think Maggie has been smarter in her career, just luckier in some respects. And you could say Jake was smarter earlier in his career. But again, I think he was just luckier.

Maggie has never had the success on her own that Jake has had, a la Source Code.

But then again, it's not a competition between them.

Hagen said...

Especially because An Enemy will be another indie release and hard to judge.

You can start tracking "An Enemy" now. ;)
Based on Denis Villeneuve's latest movie "Incendies" I assume that "An Enemy" will probably be an arthouse production that won't aim for broad box office appeal.

An interesting detail about "Prisoners" from "Variety": "Gyllenhaal had been considering the project for some time but discussions stalled; thesp re-engaged after a recent script polish."

UltraViolet said...

Hagen, is Prisoners a big budget movie? I assumed with DV directing that it was another indie. It's apparently one of those Black List scripts. Here's an interesting description:

Script, penned by Aaron Guzikowski, “revolves around a small-town carpenter whose young daughter and best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, he takes the law into his own hands, but in the process runs up against the big-city detective assigned to the case.” It’s said to have echoes of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven.

The relationship between Terry, a hoodie-wearing slacker played by Jake Gyllenhaal in his New York stage debut, and Anna, his pudgy 15-year-old niece, may be the tenderest on any New York stage right now. Given that Terry has no compunction about prodding Anna (Annie Funke) and telling her she’s fat, this may seem a nonsensical assessment, yet it is the gift of playwright Nick Payne, in If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet, at the Roundabout’s off-Broadway space, to make us understand why Anna finds Terry so attractive: he pays her genuine attention.

I experienced less distraction when Jake Gyllenhaal was onstage. Sporting a credible British accent and a complete mastery of Terry’s staccato speech, Gyllenhaal avoids making the character a generic lovable loser. His combination of humour and sorrow, cruelty and kindness, is priceless.

Jake Gyllenhaal Live Onstage! He's Good!

If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet is a not nearly enthralling enough head scratcher by acclaimed British playwright Nick Payne, but it has some intriguing relationships, all stammering at cross purposes
Brian F. O'Byrne is an academic who concerns himself with global warming, but not with the apparent melting down of his own family.

In comes his returning younger brother Terry, played by Jake Gyllenhaal in a T-shirt, chain necklace, jeans, sweater-around the-waist, facial hair, and quite good British accent.

This is Jake's American stage debut, and he's very effective, using lots of physicality for the stoner character, plumbing the guy's awkward well-meaning quality and potentially darker instincts as he reconnects with his bullied niece (Annie Funke).

If he were some unknown, Jake's definitely the kind of actor about whom you'd say, "Wow, he should be a movie star."

And he's competing with all the elements here.

Throughout the play, the cast throws pieces of furniture into a canal in front of the stage, and by the end--as you may have heard--the water seeps onto the stage as O'Byrne wonders, "Are we worth saving if we're not prepared to change?"

Yes--if Jake Gylenhaal is part of the human race.

He--and the rest of the cast--take their curtain call ankle deep in water.

That's dedication.

and LoL :) at this comment

blissbaby :
I saw it and couldn't believe he never took his shirt off, even to sop off the water pouring onto the stage. yes, I'm terminally superficial

Viv, I think you will have to wait and see about the script, it may or may not be action. I don't think Denis is about that neither is Melissa Leo. I'm thinking its more about tense relationship and human behavior. Although Hugh is attached to the project, he is not all about action. He's a good actor who I think is trying to get around all that action hero hole, ie Les Mis.

What turns me off, is the "mindless" action movies that are usually so successful at the B.O. EoW was filled with action, but it was grounded. It made sense.

To me,there's almost "Heart of Darkness" quality to it,as these two young cops are drawn deeper into the hellish world they're policing. I never felt like it was gratuitous violence, or that the situations weren't authentic.

I know it's rare these days, but I beieve it's possible to have a tense thriller with some action, that's smart and well done, and makes sense.

I hope this project goes forward for Jake. Working with HJ & Melissa Leo and Denis, again, on a movie with a real budget! Yaay!

http://tinyurl.com/9hcwxo7 Jake Gyllenhaal is impressive in this sad and moving play #JakeGyllenhaal #OffBroadway #RoundaboutTheater

Teenage bullying and global warming have both received a great deal of attention in the media lately, but one wonders if they have ever been combined into one story. Bringing the two together in one play is even more unusual, but that is exactly what is done in If There Is, I Haven’t Found It Yet, the well-meaning but heavy handed play by Nick Payne, currently playing at the Laura Pels Theater. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal in an impressive New York stage debut, Payne’ story of a dysfunctional family is moving but a bit oversaturated – in more ways than one.

Wouldn't it be fun if Jake did a story like this someday.

Murray is so funny.

The movie doesn't sound like brainless action. I'm assuming there's a big psychological element, if Denis V is involved.

And it's not like Jake would be going from action to action. An Enemy certainly doesn't fit that mold.

I read the review of the script and this movie sounds good. Hugh Jackman's character is not a character to be liked, as he is used to interpret, and if Jake is eyeing the role of detective, wow, this is gonna be good.
Melissa also seems to have a great character.

Viv, many films seem cliche, Source Code is one example, but in good hands, it was a great movie.

It just seems to me that Jake is so versatile that he's trying different things and is so good at what he's done so far. (I'm glad he gets pats on the back from the industry and fans alike)

It's obvious he enjoyed working with Denis on "Enemy" and when Jake heard about this project he wanted to be on board (not sure if Denis was attached when Jake heard about it)

I, for one, would love to see him play a detective. I think being a detective is a challenge of a different kind than being a police officer. (I knew someone who was an undercover detective, it's even more intense than being a cop on the beat)

I am planning on seeing EOW this week. I'll let you all know what I think

To answer the very first reply, finally, I remembered that it was asked: Yes, that is John Lesher in the first screen cap.

Monica, what review did you read? I found only this spoilery one and it didn't seem positive. I definitely skimmed, though.

The Scriptshadow review seems to have been removed, but there's still this non-spoilery synopsis:

Prisoners - When his young daughter and her best friend vanish on Thanksgiving Day, Keller Dover takes matters into his own hands, imprisoning and torturing the man who he thinks did it. But does he have the wrong man?

Thoughts: Prisoners by Aaron Guzikowski is a script I liked, but didn't quite love. Its strength is its pitch-perfect dark tone, but it's a little messy in places, particularly in the end, where it seems to pay off things that were never set up. The thing I find most fascinating about Prisoners is that it was probably the hottest spec screenplay all year, and yet for a long time, because they couldn't get the right attachments, it didn't sell. First time screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski must have been fucking flipping out. I mean, they can assure you all they want that everything will eventually work out, but I wouldn't have wanted to be waiting in those shoes for all those months. In the end he won out though, landing a million dollar sale.

No review (taken down for various reasons)

Dark tone - yes!

And yay for EoW winning the day easily on Monday. Hope that continues for the week :)

I found this quote from someone on FB who was praising EoW, and it really says it all, IMO:

"It's more than just a film, it's an experience."

This Prisoner project sounds exciting.

I read this: the script shadow

Of course, this is the original script that was modified. I don't know what was changed.
