Jacob's Pillow

Updated with Jake's appearance on Regis:

Jake on Regis:

And Good Morning America:

And The Daily Show:

"What a wonderful face to wake up to!"

That's a quote from Jake Gyllenhaal regarding a prop from Source Code. The discussion of it veers into spoiler territory, so I'm going to put it at the end of the post. Don't scroll all the way down if you don't want to be spoiled! Pictures of Jake leaving his hotel and at the Daily Show interspersed throughout the post.

The pillow talk comes from an interesting Independent interview. Jake talks about love and time and making movies.

In his private life, he's dated Kirsten Dunst and Reese Witherspoon, followed by a brief fling with country singer Taylor Swift late last year, although he prefers to discuss love in the abstract offering instead. "What I believe about love is that, whether it's with your family, whether it's with somebody you fall in love with and have a relationship with, your partner or whatever, it's all about being seen. It's all about someone saying, 'I see you. I see who you are. I love who you are. I appreciate who you are'," says the actor whose status is currently single.

Having bonded with Ledger on Brokeback Mountain, he reflects on their experience working together without rose-coloured glasses, saying, "A lot of times, the most wonderful, interesting movies are not exactly fun to make. One of the hardest processes I went through – and I'd say that every actor would agree on this – and which wasn't a tonne of fun was Brokeback Mountain. Yet we loved each other on that movie so much that we are all still close and we will be for the rest of our lives. Also if that movie would have been successful or not, financially or whatever, there was still something special about it, even though it didn't feel good at the time.

"So in accepting this role, working with Duncan, I wasn't sure if it would be fun but I knew it was gonna be rad! There's a mystery about Duncan that is totally original."

It's not a post these days without a video. This is a fun look at Jake doing one of those roundtables. The video information says it was made yesterday, 3/30:

Also, Jake, Michelle and Vera talk to TV Guide. Vera and Michelle kind of gush about Jake.

Spoiler Alert! From the Independent story:

One of the perks – or pitfalls – of being an actor is that you never quite know what you'll be called upon to portray, thus it was with great consternation that Gyllenhaal peered upon the Source Code replica of himself, torso severed in half, his partially exposed brain hooked up to a computer with electrodes.

"It was pretty creepy to behold," he admits. "They had my eyes moving and my lips, it was quite freaky. The process of doing those things, making the cast and everything, is often even weirder than when you see the result of it because its so suffocating and strange.

"But I've never seen something that looked so much like me and I even took a picture of it with me with my thumb up and then got really paranoid because I didn't want anyone to like steal my phone and find my picture and be like 'that's the end of the source code!' The brilliance of the artistry of how they did it is what blew me away more than anything."

Asked what became of his life-like torso after filming, he quips. "It's now my pillow. I wake up every morning and go 'Aaah, what a wonderful face to wake up to!' "

that was just too funny/creepy not to post!

All you NYC GBers, take note:

RegalMovies Regal Entertainment
Join Duncan Jones, Jake Gyllenhaal & Michelle Monaghan on Friday as they introduce SOURCE CODE at Regal E-Walk in NY (8PM and 8:40PM shows)!

Also, Bobbyanna, I think you mentioned the behind-the-scenes footage in the MovieWeb video. I think all of that can be seen on Trailer Addict's b-roll. I have to admit FFing the Movieweb video in the interests of getting the post up, so I can't be sure.

But you shouldn't watch the b-roll until you've seen the movie.

RT 92%:):)!!!

I have taken note UV, The Apple Store and SC at The Regal. The Apple Store is downtown and the regal is Midtown, I hope my friend doesn't mind, if so then i will be solo for the SC viewing.

I think that it's great that they are doing this, the buzz has been really good.

He and Jon were funny last night, the child bride thing was him making fun of him and Taylor obviously and the Mother thing was a creepy but I still laughed.

I will have to catch his appearences on GMA and Kelly and Regis later, I have to get back to work!

PS: I forgot that he has the charity auction for Needy eyes tonight, I hope it goes well!

Me again: I just had to add that I didn't scroll down to read the spoilerish part of the post, I will remain strong for the next 24 hours!

Missed GMA, but Jake was just a sweetheart on Regis. Poor Regis found the SC plotline confusing. ;)

As the segment ended Jake was giving Regis encouragement for a medical test he's having today. Carrie Ann Inaba guest hosted. She's very warm & likeable.

Chica, and all the rest of you NYC-ers, I wish I could be there today!:)

UV, I only saw footage on the clip you posted. I won't go rummaging around B-roll stuff until the weekend...after I've seen the movie.;)

jake was very funny on jon stewart i think he was wearing the same outfit he wore on JK he sure loves to wear the same clothes:)

ill be able to catch jake on GMA and regis since it hasnt come on yet here in CA

bobbyanna said...

Well, mary and other West Coasters, don't do what I did. I thought the segment was over, & shut it off, but apparently Jake came back out when Carrie Ann's fiance surprised her with a real engagement ring! Maybe there will be video of it.

Also FB is saying Ryan Seacrest is interviewing Jake this morning on his radio show, in the 10 AM segment, but I've had no luck so far.

mary said...

thanks for the heads up bobbyanna i would have switched it off too

UltraViolet said...

I wondered what happened with that. People on FB said Jake ruined the surprise for her.

Stay strong, chica and bobbyanna :)

And Chica, good luck trying to see Jake at the Apple Store and/or Regal tomorrow.

Mary, Jake was great on TDS. Updated the post with that appearance and the GMA clip.

Bobbyanna, is it 10:00 EDT or West Coast time?

Glad we got an update from the Daily Show cat woman, hee. Here are some fun tweets from a GMA staffer:

GMA Jake Gyllenhaal just ahead on @GMA. @RobinRoberts has three words for this interview: "hubba, hubba, hubba."
about 2 hours ago via web

@enwiley I'd hate me too! He's so handsome!

OMg, Jake Gyllenhall just got here. How's my hair?!

It's really hard to figure out what to wear to work when you know Jake Gyllenhaal is going to be there.

UV, I think it's DST with Ryan, so right after he finished Regis, I guess.

Is it me? It seems the people who interview Jake are always very warm and gushy with him:) He generates a level of excitement, like his appearance is a real special occasion, and he makes his interviewers want to get close to him...figuratively speaking.

There's a particular dynamic I see with Jake that seems different from other celeb guest appearances. They genuinely like him. A lot.:) Of course, my judgement is permanently impaired where he's concerned.

Robin Roberts was SO positive about SC,too. Seemed genuine. I've watched enough "movie pluggers" to know when the host goes the extra mile. Jake clearly seems like he's one of the favorites as far as the media is concerned. Most of the time.

mary said...

i agree with you bobbyanna i think jake is a fovorite person people like to interview almost everyone who interviews him seems to get all mushy when they do hes very funny and smart

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Jake does have a comfort level and a likeabilty with most of the people that interviews him, they genuinely seem to like him.

Thanks for posting the GMA video, I will check it out on my lunch break.

I loved the Daily show interview, but will they ever get together to play basketball? I rememeber the offer way back when Jake was on the show in 2007!

Good luck tomorrow Chica:)

Maybe Jake is carrying an imaginary rabbit in the pics in the previous post!

bobbyanna said...

"Maybe Jake is carrying an imaginary rabbit in the pics in the previous post!"

LOL!

(I also get a kick out of interviewers who try to establish "cred": "He's a good friend of mine," or "We've known each other for years" or "We go back..." etc.)

Jake was on Regis this morning, I thought it was a nice interview. Regis was going under a medical procedure to enlarge his esophagus and was nervous about it. At the very end of the interview Jake leans over and tries to comfort Regis by telling him he understands about being anxious that he gets anxious when....(they cut to a commercial before Jake finished what he was saying) but I think it was very touching thing for him to do. (nothing surprising coming from a sweet man like Jake)

UltraViolet said...

That is sweet, anon. Jake is a sweet guy.

If you read the People story, it seems like the co-host mentioned her non-engagement at the beginning of the show. It's hard to tell whether Jake knew the surprise was coming. I don't think he did ruin it for her, but some say he almostdid.

Wait, OONP, you mean Frank wasn't real?!?! :)

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for the Seacrest link, FL. The Bourne thing is now all over twitter. This is another thing I blame on Jake's PR people. Why was his name the lead one attached and why did the story linger so long?

SC was up to 93%, but sadly, one bad review and it's down to 92%. Not a bad problem to have!

Oh, and I forgot to say that Robin Roberts does really seem to like Jake, Bobbyanna. Loved her demeanor with him and her tweets. Jake does seem to try to entertain, and I think these folks appreciate it.

mary said...

i dont think jake ruined the surpise they started out at the talking about the reports of her being engaged and she wasnt and i think jake just went along with it i doubt if he knew what was ahead

i loved jake on GMA AND REGIS he was very funny and relaxed and yes i think robin was smmittee with jake who wouldnt be:)

mary said...

well after reading the eonline article maybe jake was aware was planned according to them the ring he brought out was the real one so maybe he got a little too excited aboutit and maybe said a little too much but it turned out alright in the end

bobbyanna said...

e!online gets a lot of stuff wrong, mary. You were right the first time. I think he was in on it, and People.com says he brought out a fake ring. Maybe to keep the game going and give Regis something to talk about.
So I don't think Jake "almost" ruined anything either.

Jake would never do that! :)

Anyway, all's well that ends well;)

mary said...

yea youre right bobbyanna people is a more reliable source i dont believehe ruined anything either as i said before

UltraViolet said...

Yeah, no way was that the real ring. IdEots.

The first evidence that anyone seeing Source Code wants to make their own story from it. (Remember that as the big story at SXSW?):

giving serious thought to spending my weekend writing up a game concept based on source code (saw it last night, loved it)...

From the stylists:

swartists: We deal with a lot of beautiful ladies, but with Jake G. there are no words. Groomed by @mollyrstern. http://ow.ly/4qB1o

The "groomed by" tag always makes me think of horses.

UltraViolet said...

Oh and Movieline continues its recent tradition of hating on Jake. Their reviewer, Elvis Mitchell, hated it.

That whole site seems to have an animus against Jake. I don't get it.

Shondra said...

I had to work from home today and caught Regis and Kelly and I thought that Jake was in on it too.

I guess it's more interesting to report missinformation than the truth like the SXSW bathroom crap.

I think I liked his Daily show appearence the best just because I like the back and forth between Jake and Jon, they are too funny!

I checked RT and SC is at 88%, Time magazine didn't like it:(

I lost all interest in Movieline since it went digital and in Mitchell since he left the NY Times.

I think SC RT rating will settle in the mid-80's once all the reviews come in. I would have liked for it to remain in the 90's but the mid-80's ain't bad.

bobbyanna said...

UV, I met Elvis Mitchell during TIFF when Rendition was screened. I saw him later sitting in a hotel lobby talking with the Rendition screenwriter. The next day, when I saw him walking down the street, I asked him how he enjoyed Rendition and he was less than lukewarm about it! Almost nasty. I agree. He's a creep with a personal animus towards Jake. He's also a real jerk. Who cares about him.

bobbyanna said...

Really great review in the
Los Angeles Times:

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-source-code-20110401,0,2928465.story?track=rss

Gives Jake & Michelle all the credit for making the movie work.:)

Anonymous said...

Wasn't it Elvis Mitchell that gave Jake a good review with "Bubble Boy". Think that's the one he was talking about on the BB commentary.

bobbyanna said...

Slate did a review filled with snide comments and snark, very condescending toward Duncan, but had this to say about Jake:

"...because we come to care about Stevens, and not just the successful execution of his mission, Source Code has a resonance that too many contemporary thrillers lack. Gyllenhaal invests Stevens with the simmering anger and grinning charm familiar to the genre, but also with a real sense of vulnerability."

They were dismissive of Vera and Michelle and Jeffery and had "advice" for Duncan, to in effect, "stick to movies the size of Moon"!

Monica said...

Inception is 86% at RT.

From Duncan Jones:
@ManMadeMoon Duncan Jones
Find it odd Movieline choose to complain about Jeffrey Wright smoking a pipe, something in an old draft of the script thats not in the film.

UltraViolet said...

Ooh, snap Duncan!

Great review from Manohla Dargis, too. Nice words for Jake's performance though she slates his recent movies. It's great that the movie is getting good ratings from most top critics, too.

I read the Slate review and couldn't figure out if it was positive or negative.

I didn't know that about you and Elvis, bobbyanna. I can't remember if he did a good job on that panel. I don't think we got to see the whole thing.

The Bubbleboy track info does sound familiar, anon.

UltraViolet said...

No idea if this is true. It's from that Tracking Board site, the one that had the scoop on Jake and the Muppet movie.

Michael Pena Signs On To Star Opposite Jake Gyllenhaal In David Ayer's END OF WATCH

FL said...

His "words of advice" to Duncan were so patronizing. You know what, John Swansburg from Slate? Those who can, do. Those who cannot, critique.

FL said...

Michael Pena Signs On To Star Opposite Jake Gyllenhaal In David Ayer's END OF WATCH

Oh that's interesting. He looks like Mark Ruffalo.

bobbyanna said...

I remember Michael Pena from Crash.
He was the locksmith with the little daughter.

In Harsh Times Ayer pairs Christian Bale with Freddie Rodriguez in a story about two LAPD officers,...etc.

Maybe this will be different. I was honestly hoping Ayer won't
repeat himself. It's almost as if he's cornered the genre on cop/buddy movies of cops in trouble, faced with moral dilemmas, etc. Altho, I liked Training Day & Dark Blue. His actors always do good work. Except Eva Longoria.:/

Great catch, Duncan!
UV did Elvis do a panel for SC?

I can't stand reviewers like that damned Slate guy, FL.

Wonder if there are any pics of Jake at the New Eyes event?

bobbyanna said...

FYI: WireImage has pics of Jake at the Cinema Society screening of SC tonight with Duncan & Michelle.

Getty has pics of him at New Eyes fundraiser.

Chica said...

So happy that the NY and LA Times liked SC, it got good reviews from The Rolling Stone and Salon too!

I had no idea that you met Elvis Mitchell Bobbyanna, I used to love reading his reviews in the NY Times.

He does seem to have a bias against Jake and I won't even comment on the Slate review:(

Thanks for the news on Pena joining the cast of End of Watch!!

bobbyanna said...

Chica it was so random. I was at TIFF, and would see him walking the route from the hotel where the news conferences were held, to the sceening venues. After I saw him talking to the guy who wrote Rendition, I decided to just walk up to him and ask hm about it. Don't remember what he said specifically, but he was uninspired, and unenthusiastic, and almost rude.

Rufus Wainwright, Howard Stern and his wife, some fashion models, (who's Genevieve Morton) models, and Lindsay Lohan and Gina Gershon attended the Cinema Society screening of SC tonight in NYC...talk about random! :) Duncan Jake & Michelle looked happy.

The Wrap has some predictions for this weekend.

I loved Jake on jon stewart, they have really great banter. I stopped watching regis after Jake's segment was over, but i recorded it so i'll go back and watch the engagement. Now that whole ring thing makes since.

Is that Jake and Ryan secrest interview good, should i listen to it?

Michael Pena was in Jarhead with jake! This should be interesting.

FL, if Howard likes it, I hope he will talk it up on his radio show tomorrow.
