On The Road - With Jake Gyllenhaal

Today is travelogue day.

This weekend and into next finds Jake and the production of Brothers setting up shop in and around the Los Alamos area according to IMDB. Los Alamos might best be known for the birthplace of the atomic bomb. According to GORP, Los Alamos, New Mexico, about 40 minutes to the northwest of Santa Fe and over the Rio Grande, is where the Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb, was based during World War II. Los Alamos is aloof physically and, some would say, emotionally, from much of New Mexico. It was literally a secret city until the 1950s, and much of its housing and public buildings seem to have been caught in a Lucy-and-Desi era time warp. (Ed. I love this description!)

"Little Boy" was the code name for the atomic bomb developed at Los Alamos Design Laboratory later detonated over Hiroshima. There's a replica of Little Boy on display at the Los Alamos Museum.

I really hope part of the wardrobe for Jake while filming in Los Alamos includes asbestos boxers. Two pair. To be worn at the same time.

Also according to IMDB, one of the base camps will be set up at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall on Canyon Road in Los Alamos.

Later in the week a base camp will be set up on the grounds of the Los Alamos County Golf Course.

Pretty, isn't it?

Here's what
Tee Times America has to say about this lovely course:

Nestled atop the beautiful mesas below the Jemez Mountains, Los Alamos Golf Course offers a challenging 6500 yard par 72, 18 hole layout. Through a multitude of ponderosa pines and cottonwood trees the sloping fairways and small push-up greens provide a challenge to all levels of golfers.

This beautifully maintained golf course, built in 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission, is the second oldest 18 hole golf course in New Mexico. Owned and operated by the County of Los Alamos, the community is proud of its unique municipal course with such tremendous golfing value.

Panoramic vistas and clear, fresh mountain air at an elevation of 7300 feet provide a beautiful setting to beat the summer heat and enjoy an unforgettable golfing experience.

Built by the Atomic Energy Commission? In 1947? One wonders what lies beneath that beautifully landscaped and maintained golf course. Make that THREE pair of asbestos boxers for Jake please.

Other filming locations include The United Church of Los Alamos.

According to the spoilers brought over by JP in the previous entry, Jake should be at these above and below locations this week.

And a view inside their Sanctuary, where according to their own website, Monday and Tuesday will see the same used as a movie set.

I'll be looking out for those stained glass windows when the movie is released.

Another filming location calls for a "residence in Barranca Mesa", a neighborhood in Los Alamos.

Typical Barranca Mesa homes:

Southwestern Adobe and Ranch style homes seem to be the major design theme in Barranca Mesa.

I thought this Barranca Mesa winter sunrise too beautiful not to share.

Not only is there wintry weather in much of the U.S., but it's also snowy and cold in the high plains of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Which means, pics of Jake in winter gear.

Also, the Amazing Stephanie just posted up some new olds at IHJ.

Is that what you think of this photoshoot, Jake?

ETA: A couple of news items about Brothers.

The WGA chose New Mexico as the first place outside of NY or LA to picket. They have plans to protest again in New Mexico, but shooting on Brothers shouldn't be disrupted.

Also, it looks like Mare Winningham has joined the Brothers cast. Not sure what part she'll play. Remember, though, any speculation involving spoilers should be labeled!

hahaha.

I was actually going to look online for photos of the golf course and church. But alas, i'm far too lazy for such things...

I'm off to read the entire B section of the dictionary.

Too funny.... I'm still laughing at that..... (not a good idea when you just took a sip of your whiskey & soda.)

Jake needs to be a little more mindful of these kind of environmental minefields. I mean, he went to Nagasaki as a kid.... seems to me he has been exposed to enough radiation!

Ooooh, ouch, suvee! That soda really hurts when it comes out of your nose!

But really, Jake needs to think about these things - we need to have little Jakes and Jakettes running around this world one day.

UV an Fluorescent, stellar job in "previewing" Brothers' locations! I'll be looking for these when the movie is released. Wonder what the local shopping is like. I'm also wondering if there is residual radio activity around, do you think Jake will glow in the dark?

Point of clarification:
jp, you and I will have to agree to disagree on our perceptual differences. It was a gross mischaracterization to say, I "glossed over the DLC...etc." Since I talked about it for more than two paragraphs, I hardly glossed over it...or the role of "corporate" influences expressed by some elements of the DLC. And BTW, corporate influences are not inherently evil. And neither are many special interests. The DLC is a fairly recent invention, from an historical perspective. The points of view and interests it purports to represent aren't unique nor are they necessarily particularly sinister.I simply do not entirely share your point of view. It isn't necessary for us to agree. Both of us are entitled to our own points of view on this. I know this. Having experienced a Clinton Presidency,I will have no problem whatsoever in voting for Hilary, should she get the nomination.

Sorry to post discussion from the previous thread, but, since jp specifically addressed me and something I said, I really felt it was necessary to clarify. I have nothing more to add. I'm thru with it.

Hey , FL, I am touched that you are so concerned for Jake's future reproductive capacity. :)

Love Jake in winter gear, although, on a shallow note, somebody " overdid" Jake's eyebrows in the ones with Maggie. He's still adorable though.
Does anyone know when brothers is scheduled to be released? B.

I'm off to read the entire B section of the dictionary.

Trying to think of a word beginning with "s," JP? ;)

And suvee and lawgoddess, isn't it good of felicia to be so vigilant about Jake's private parts. She is very noble!

And bobbyanna, no problem bringing over the discussion. That's necessary when we close comments.

try thinking of Jake in winter weather gear, and then in some asbestos boxers - that should make you smile!

UltraViolet said...

Also, B, Jake's eyebrows need to be treated with almost as much care as his privates!

Oh a personal note, thanks to everyone for making our first week in the blogosphere so much fun. And thanks for dropping by, reading and posting.

It means a lot to us.

Happy One Week Anniversary, UV

:-)

Now on to Week Two!

Aww, what's the traditional first-week blogiversary gift? A paperclip? :)

Thanks to everyone who's lurked, posted, dropped in or stayed for a while!

And thanks to felicia for all the fun.

Not sure, but I think I read it's a mousepad. ;-)

"That being said, I'm always amazed how many non-Americans like to offer, loudly and often, their two cents worth to what's happening politically in America. "

I'm sorry to bring this here from the other post but I had to comment.I understand what you're saying but bare in mind that U.S. policies on crucial matters (the enviroment being the most crucial imo) affect the fates of people around the world. For that reason many people outside the U.S. (me included) would gladly change the result of the two previous elections if they could and are really anxious to see what will happen at the 2008 elections

Back to Jake, I don't understand why the WGA protested outside the studio where "Brothers" is filmed.I thought the problem was with films being written, not filmed

Happy first week anniversary and looking forward to many many more weeks, great site.

Jake in winter winter clothes yummy.

"Maybe more even since she wasn't able to control the eventual outcome"

"I'm not sure I completely embrace the notion that Reese is "controlling."

You know, this is the old problem of writing and not hearing how the other person is saying the word.
I agree that to some people Reese might appear "controlling" while others would interpret her trying to hold things together as just that. We all would like to "controll" things that affect us, to minimize damage to the loved ones and us, to try to work things out the way we would like to have them. The older you get, the more you actually realize how little you are de facto able to controll.
We go through hard times to grow and just learn that and eventually become stronger and mature and even a little more pragmatic and maybe a little more forgiving to others and to oneself. Surely a good thing for relationships that follow, don´t you think?
Thanks Felicia for your kind reply, and yes, a lot of things actually fell into place since then and I am very grateful for that.

One last note on politics:
Lobbying is big worldwide (probably the driving force in politics) and is, IMO, at least partly responsible for the drastic loss of image that politicians worldwide have to face, and rightfully so. One of the advantages of the internet is that the general opportunism of people with power and influence is much easier revealed, even though we should be constantly aware that we are also being manipulated by these lobby-groups and all kinds of loonys pushing their agendas without any kind of integrity to stop them.

Get well soon, UV, I agree with Bobbyanna concerning the chicken-broth, the water-intake and fruit and not taking milkproducts. Try to increase your ascorbic acid intake and maybe try some homoeopathic remedy.

A very happy anniversary!!! I am so happy the two of you "took the plunge!" This has been great.
I, too, am very concerned for future Gyllenbabies!!!! I hope Jake is taking every precaution! I'd feel better if one of us was there to check on him...I mean, since Reese is so busy...

Just thinking: After looking at these pictures again, the architecture of the houses, etc. is kind of retro-50's and 60's; bland and uninspired. But the physical geography of NM is such a contrast! Just stunning, really. Very dramatic and very beautiful. Almost as if some kind of invisible hand guided the builders to not get too full of themselves and distract from what was already there. They 've shot some movies where I live and the locals do enjoy some benefits! I remember one instance when a film crew had set up on a sidewalk and street in front of a four story office building. Not a very big one at all. They were there for two days. And the owner of the building raised such hell, that they paid him $50,000!!!

It snowed here last night. Our first.

smile, the sentence before the one you quoted, is the one to which I was referring. Sorry for the confusion. Flourescent referred to Reese's having a reputation for being "controlling" and the sort of negative connotation implied by that generated my response. I agree with what both of you have said about any of us attempting to influence, or control events, whatever the motivation, but especially if you are trying desperately to hold things together for your family, especially when small children are involved.

It's just that I've gotten a sense over the years that Reese is sometimes portrayed as a real "control freak." Someone who can be real "difficult" when she doesn't get her way. That is what was really implied by the ridiculous rumors someone was trying to stir up about her relationship with VV on set, too. Reese might be a little self conscious herself, thus the "Type A' title for her production company. (Some times an assertive woman engages in a form of self-censorship,second guessing, or over-compensating when they are continually described as "too controlling." Especially if it's a criticism they might hear regularly from their Significant Other.)Bette Davis and Katherine Hepburn were "difficult" and "controlling" too. So was Olivia De Havilland, "Miss Melly", of all people!

Hi Bobbyanna, no confusion at all, I quoted Felicias before yours to put what I intended to say in context with both your statements (should have written F said, B said, maybe). And I agree with everthing you said in your post. There have been people with and without influence who have tried to badmouth strong women like Bette (whom I adore), Reese, Maggie and a lot of other actresses, who do not comply with being pretty, sexy and silent.

That being said, thank you UV, master of tidbits and bigger things related to Jake and Felicia, for creating this blog, keeping us entertained and informed and accomplishing such a loving, laid-back but stimulating atmosphere.

BTW (I just love how you all are concerned about the *whispers* Gooberballs health.)

Has it really only been one week that GyllenBabble has existed? It's already such an integral part of my Jakefan life, it seems longer. : )

UV and FL, thanks so much for all the work you do. This is a truly great site..... you two should be proud!

Happy anniversary, can't believe it's only a week!

I'd say three pairs of abestos pants would be absolute minimum :D

Happy anniversary!! Thank you UV (hope you feel better. Take good care and get plenty of rest. *hugs*) and Felicia for all the great work you do here. I love this blog and all the people who post here. I love the conversations going on. Cheers to everyone!! :)

Interesting about the WGA strike on NM. That does surprise me as I do think of it as a NY/LA protest. Shows that there are writers all over the county. I just hope it all gets resolved quickly and the writers get the compensation they deserve.

Btw, the link to the Mare Winningham story doesn't work. She is a very good actor so I like that she is in Brothers. I really wonder who will play the parents. They are really important characters. I won't say more than that. No spoilers. ;)

http://www.santafenewmexican.com/Leisure/mitote121607

That's the link to the Mare mention.

"Best boots: Multiple Emmy-award and Oscar winner (Best Supporting Actress for Georgia) Mare Winningham) and producer Zach Schiff-Abrams stopped by Back At The Ranch last week to check out the boots. The two visited the store at separate times, but both are in town working on Brothers with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman. According to IMDB, Winningham also worked on the recently completed Kevin Costner film, Swing Vote. She's the mother of five and even went to high school in Los Angeles with Pecos-area resident Val Kilmer. Small world. "

According to IMDB she is 47, so it is very possible she is playing the mother.

Hi Sarah and Felicia,
Happy anniversary to both of you.
It's fantastic being able to access this site during our daily crawls around Gyllenverse; it's packed with information, photos and unverified chatter about the Gyllenspoon.

Now if those two would just stop working so hard and go R&R . Fly-net would appreciate it and so would I, though I hesitate to admit it in public;)

Maybe the paped sightings in Napa will drive them into more seclusion; "e.g." Martha's Vineyard this past summer, when Reese visited with her children, or perhaps they will vacation in remote private locations with villas like Napa, but with consideration by the resorts' staff to keep their sojourn private.

I think they both really did hide out in San Francisco with...unlike their last trip in that area...and enjoy the visit quietly, with her children

Jake has never been one to court pap cameras. He lives his life, which is an outdoor daytime life, but I suspect he makes sure Reese and her children avoid undue public exposure

Afternoon, all! And thanks for the anniversary wishes :)

I agree, gr77, as I said in the other post. In this day and age, we all have to be aware of wht goes on in our own country and others.

WDW just postet the latest Brothers info:

Brothers in Las Vegas, NM

Filming continues apace on Brothers, with some shooting at least going on in Las Vegas, New Mexico. A resident reported on IMDb that 'Roughly 30 minutes ago, I think they were filming in front of the Spic 'n' Span because cops had the whole block barricaded. Pretty exciting. You wouldn't think such big names would hit little ol' Vegas.'

UltraViolet said...

Oh, I forgot to say thanks for covering us on the Mare Winningham link. Should be fixed now.

After looking at these pictures again, the architecture of the houses, etc. is kind of retro-50's and 60's; bland and uninspired. But the physical geography of NM is such a contrast! Just stunning, really. Very dramatic and very beautiful. Almost as if some kind of invisible hand guided the builders to not get too full of themselves and distract from what was already there.

I like the contrast of nature's beauty and human's blandness. I've been trying to avoid Brothers spoilers, but I get the sense from the locations and from what I do know of the story that the lives portrayed are more downtrodden than inspired.

Interesting about the WGA strike on NM. That does surprise me as I do think of it as a NY/LA protest. Shows that there are writers all over the county.

They chose NM because so many films are being made there. They were trying to emphasize the point that people there will be affected, as well.

And Sass, I'm wondering if Reese can sneak into Santa Fe for Jake's birthday. Not sure what the For Christmases shooting schedule is. Or Jake's for that matter.

They don't tell me anything!

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for the info, smile. FYI - I think that sighting was from Friday. Just don't want any of our NM readers to run over to the Spic 'n' Span!

Their particular hookup, Sagittarius Jake, and Aries Reese, was the astrological makeup of my late mom and dad.
My mom, a fiery, strong, and opinionated:) Aries--4/18-- the Ram, and my dad, a kind, loving, considerate wonderful Sagittarius --12/10--who loved her more than I could ever imagine.

Let's hope Jake has a fantastic birthday.

Hi, sass!! I traveled thru the area around Big Sur, Monterey, Carmel and upwards to San Francisco, and there are some extremely posh, very private resorts in the area, and it is very romantic, too. I remember spending some pleasant hours on the pier in Monterey, I think, where you could buy small fish to feed to the sea lions. They were very friendly with huge, warm, very expressive eyes. I would imagine, for a small child it would be a real treat to do that. I think the paps pretty much leave them alone. I think the people who work at these resorts are the culprits. It wouldn't surprise me at all if who ever leaked out their last excursion is no longer working at that resort.I'd bet a lot of very famous people visit these high end resorts. Privacy is critical for them. An inn that earns a reputation for discretion, is valued...and one that spies on it's guests, is not.
