Jake and Reese: Then and Now-ish

Back in 1999 when he wasn't slogging through his freshman year at Columbia, Jake found time to attend the 6th Annual Elizabeth Glaser Foundation Kids for Kids Carnival held in Central Park on April 25th that year.

Meanwhile, during that same week in another part of the country and seemingly light years away from freshman angst and Ramen Noodles, four and a half months pregnant Reese Witherspoon attends the Los Angeles premiere of her film, Election, held on April 20, 1999.

Fast forward eight years later to almost the same date:

still rocking the Ivy League look

rocking the sapphires

I wonder what April, 2008 will bring for Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon!

Jake looks just like a schoolboy there haha.

I didn't realise that Reese was wearing the sapphire pendant way back in April. I really wonder just how long they have been seeing each other, longer than we think maybe??.

Does anyone have a larger one of that picture of Reese, because due to hours of dilgent research studing the Rome photos (the hardship!) there was a ring of some description on the chain when she wore it in Rome, it's clearly visible in only one shot - now if the ring was not there in April, but was in Rome, well, I'm not saying it's definately one Jake gave her, but.....;-)

After James McAvoy's stirring performance in Atonement, Christina Ricci's memorable role in Black Snake Moan, and Reese Witherspoon's part in Gavin Hood's 2007 film Rendition, the three actors will next be seen together in the magical, fairytale-like Penelope, which hits theaters in February 2008.

Featuring a whimsical blend of fantasy, romance, drama, and offbeat comedy, Penelope tells the tale of a young woman named Penelope (Christina Ricci} who's afflicted by an old family spell and cursed by a physical disformity that can only be healed when she falls in love. After falling head over heels for a man with a hidden agenda (James McAvoy), the lonely Penelope flees the confines of her parent's estate in favor of the real world where she soon discovers life is very much like an unknown wonderland. Once on her own, Penelope is befriended by a lovely young woman (Reese Witherspoon) who helps her maneouver her way through the challenges of life in an often cruel yet beautiful society.

Slated to hit theaters on February 29, 2008, Penelope is being hailed as an inspiring journey about a mysterious family secret and the power of love.

Saw this on IHJ.

"the Gee, we must have missed it department…Reese Witherspoon and her kids along with Jake Gyllenhall (Brokeback Mountain) dined at Boudin at Fisherman’s Wharf this week. So we hear."

Cannot believe with so many sightings no one took a picture.

"Reese shopping La Cienega rocking the sapphires..." LOL! UV, you make my heart glad!

There are several pictures of Reese wearing a ring Agent K. If I am not mistaken, I think JustJared posted a couple of pictures of Reese leaving LAX for NYC to hook up with Jake to go to Rome and she has a ring on her left finger. (This was the short series where her mom was giving her a heartfelt hug and she was all smiling and serene...again...)There were a few earlier pics of her out shopping or walking where she had it around her neck, from X17. I also think there were ring on a chain pics from Rome as well...this might require real detective work. I OTOH, must leave for my paying gig right now. Talk to you all much later!

Can someone please organize all these photos of pendants and rings. Also, I didn't see any ring on her left hand, was it the wedding finger?

I'm so lost right now.

I've heard about these rings and pendants before, but have never seen them. Could someone provide links to all the pics for me, please.

Thanks.

Jp: On he pics on Jared she is seen wearing a ring on her left finger, but it looks like it's her middle finger, she also appears to be wearuing a ring on her right nahd as well. It's the airport pics.

On this one you can clearly see a ring

http://www.iheartjakemedia.com/displayimage.php?album=1113&pos=36

You might need to blow it up to see it clearly, there's a cross, ring and some stuff I can't quite make out.

Oh you kids. :-)

Okay, let me find one of the pics from the series I posted in the blog entry regarding the sapphires.

Here you go. But be forewarned - it's GINORMOUS. However, all the better to see Jake's sapphires on Reese's chest. ;-)

Sapphires and Acorn

It's not a ring alongside the sapphires. Looks more like a smoky quartz.

The [Bulgari] ring she's supposed to be wearing on a chain around her neck can sort of be seen in one of the Rome pics.

The engraved band(s) she wears on the middle finger of her left hand (though not lately) look strangely identical to the engraved bands Jake used to wear on his pinky finger.

Rings on Reese

Rings on Jake

The Reese rings pic isn't the best - there's another series where you can see more clearly - I can't seem to locate those right now. And I'm sure an argument can be made that they're not the same pieces of jewelry (the sapphires and the ring(s)) and that it could be a coincidence. I tend to think not.

More Four Christmases news:

Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth has been cast in Seth Gordon's film Four Christmases, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The New Line film will star Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn as a couple who decide to brave visits to all sets of their parents for the Christmas holiday. Academy Award winners Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek, and Mary Steenburgen are also in the cast.

Chenoweth won the Tony Award for You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and was nominated for her performances in Wicked and The Apple Tree. Her many other stage credits include Scapin, Steel Pier, Epic Proportions, Candide, and Stairway to Paradise. Her film credits include Bewitched, Running With Scissors, Deck the Halls, and RV. She currently co-stars in the hit ABC series Pushing Daisies.

Theatre Mania News

I'm not-so-secretly thrilled about Kristin's casting. I've been listening to and watching the OBC of Wicked the past couple of weeks and often think how much she reminds me of Reese. So...yay!

Look at the difference between Jake and Reese in that first set. Oh my - what a difference eight years makes!

Afternoon, everyone! Working from home, but I feel a real cold coming on. I'm bundled up, trying to fend it off. So typing is difficult.

But I had to unwrap to say hello to everyone and thanks for the tidbits. So glad to get another restaurant sighting!

And I'm happy that Penelope will be released finally. But I object to the current canonization of James McAvoy. He's a good actor, but he's not in Jake's league. In my unbiased opinion :)

Also, Bobbyanna, this post was all Felicia. And like Reese with the sapphires, it rocks!

Ah, the jewelry. One of my favorite moments since I've been in this fandom - when someone whose name rhymes with incandescent scamp noticed the sapphires on Reese. Brilliant!

Sarah, what a great post! Youngjake did put a lot of stuff in his hair , didn't he? Sometimes the hair took on a life of its own, like here;

Love the way their lives were so different then, but our boy is all growed up now!

You started my day with a smile. Thanks. B.

Will correct now.

Hello guys, hope you all are alright and looking forward to enjoying the weekend. RL was demanding.
No google news I´m afraid.
When I said that this blog is the Gyllenspoon blog base, I meant that it´s just lovely that you can come here and talk some about them without getting screeched at or hassled, and that this blog is, to my knowledge, the only blog where you can.
Thanks for that. Thanks also for the links and the pics. These ring pics are inspiring, Felicia.
I don´t think that the Reese and Vince in a feud blah is anything to take serious. I would guess they are both too professional to engage in this kid stuff. They would not be where they are with their careers if they were not .
Pity that there are no Jake pics or news, but guess this was to be expected.
Next news should be the Jake and Nat romance, I surmise :)

BTW: I love oxymorons too.

As much as I want Jake news and pics, I am very glad he is able to keep a low profile. I would rather his relationship with Reese happen quietly instead of being gossip fodder. I would rather he be recognized for his work in films that just be known for his private life.

Feel better, UV! *sending you warm soup* :)

Hi Sarah,
Please bundle up. We're getting ready for a Nor'easter tomorrow evening...

Isn't Jake adorable? All that hair and so cute; who knew he'd be the hunk he is today.*sigh*

I think James McAvoy is the 'it' boy right now. I think I read that Jake was the "it boy" 2005-2006.

I'm not sure I'll go see Atonement this week. I need some cheering up, so I may go see Juno one more time.

I cropped and embiggened ;)
the pic referred to in our CSI J/R ring probe, but I couldn't make much of it, so have at it:)

I loved the like the slices of sapphire study done ny you previously. They're pretty expensive stones for my purse...if I do say so myself...and I do:)

here is J/R Rome snap..
Jake Reese Rome Ring

Below snaps Jake in Protective mode with Reese and family...good men, like Jake, always protect their families especially when paps are around..which is why I could never understand the arranged pics comments.

Anyway, hi B/LawGoddess! I don't know why blogger sometimes cuts URLs off. You can make a hyperlink by doing this:

Except where I have [ and ] you should put < and >

And it will come out like this:

Hey smile - so glad to find another oxymoron appreciator! And I agree that the Reese/Vince story is ridiculous. Especially since we have onset reports from people who say everything was pleasant and fun.

Since the Jake/reese story has begun, I've noticed even more how little actual reporting is done. Someone posts a story somewhere, and it gets picked up and repeated ad nauseam.

One example: the oft-repeated storyline that Jake "reintroduced" himself to Reece in March and their affair took off. As today's jewelry review has shown, things were well in place by March!

Hey get real. Thanks for the e-soup! Sadly, I can feel my throat rebelling against my preventative measures.

I would rather he be recognized for his work in films that just be known for his private life.

Amen to that. Despite the fact that we spend our days tracking him ;) I want Jake's acting to take the spotlight. And it frustrates me because I think he's underappreciated now. He got a lot of kudos for his early work, but I don't think he got enough for Zodiac and Rendtion.

UltraViolet said...

Hi Sass! I love seeing ProtectorJake. I do think we won't get the access to Jake and Reese's candid moments because they've both learned the value of privacy, especially for the kids. But when I see pics like the new/old Jake/Kirsten pics up on IHJ, I long for at least a little glimpse of J/R.

And a big old "UGH" for the Nor'easter. As sad as I am that Brothers chose to film in Santa Fe instead of Boston, I'd say this week's weather has proved the decision wise.

Anonymous said...

As I've said several times before, I think they were together well before March. She flew to NYC to join him for three or four days after he did his Zodiac promos and before he went back to Morocco. Casual friends don't do that. He flew to LA to see her for her birthday when they were spotted out with friends for dinner around March 22nd or 23rd? I read he allegedly gave her a bicycle for Xmas last year. Actually, I think there was a reason she banned cellphones from the set back in November. It maybe they were casually seeing each other and growing closer back then. Sort of friendly dating. But by the time of the Oscars, Miss Laura Jean Reese Witherspoon was sporting a new, sexier look, a new attitude, and I believe, a new lover.

sass, thanks for the ring pictures. And Flourescent Felicia, you angel! I 'm sorry. I didn't know it was you with the sapphires, the jewelry, etc.
Those rings do look exactly alike. The ones on Jake's finger and the Rome ones around her neck, and the ones on her fingers. My, my, my.
BTW: FYI, Your local bookseller has a lovely, very attractive huge book of recipes, a cookbook from the famous Zuni Restaurant. It is selling rather well, too. Hard cover.

UV, I had a woman coughing her guts out for about two hours working not six feet away from me...facing me...if I get sick I will hunt her down and....never mind. Drink green tea, or drink chai with honey, LOTS of honey.

Sorry for the double post, but I just realized. Jake's comments about finding a good woman, a "mindful woman..." were in the February issue of GQ. I think they usually put a monthly magazine to bed five weeks before it comes out...

Anonymous said...

"And it frustrates me because I think he's underappreciated now. He got a lot of kudos for his early work, but I don't think he got enough for Zodiac and Rendtion."

UV, couldn't agree with you more. It's not fair, but I do think that having a couple of consecutive box office disappointments subtly contributes to that underappreciation. I have faith, though, that he will become one of those rare actors whose work can combine critical and $$$ success.

Interestingly enough, "US" magazine named "Zodiac" one of it's 10 best movies of 2007.
So, they do have a little credibility!

Anonymous said...

UV, sorry you are still feeling sick. :( Keep hydrated and warm.

Amen to what you have to say! I have really been frustrated, like you, at Jake's recent work being under appreciated. That makes me upset when I look back and see the wonderful responses he got to BBM and his earlier films. Zodiac was an excellent film and Jake was really great in it but that came and went quickly and Rendition which again I thought was great became about Jake and Reese together not about the perfomances. Plus neither did well at the box office so... :/

Don't get me wrong, I love all the sightings, links and info here. I love hearing about him with Reese adn the kids or him and family going to great restaurants, etc. I love this blog and thank you, Felicia and everyone who posts Gylleninfo but I am glad the info is on a smaller scale. Not tons of pictures and nauseating "articles" in US Weekly, etc. As you said they don't seem to care about getting any facts straight so these stories go around and it gets frustrating to see. I want Jake to continue to be respected for his acting and his movie choices. I really want Brothers to do well.

UltraViolet said...

Bobbyanna, we're definitely on the same page about the relationship timing. There's no question in my mind that it was more serious much sooner than people think, and has been going on longer. But good on Reese and Jake for keeping the details private.

Damn them!

Suvee and get real, I have real frustration about Jake's critical reception. I'm trying not to attribute everything to homophobia or close-mindedness, but I think it all began with BBM. Jake was underappreciated in that, and now it seems like it's de rigueur to accuse him of playing the same thing over and over. And nothing could be further from the truth. Not that I have to persuade you guys!

And yes, I have my fingers and toes crossed for Brothers!

Anonymous said...

I agree with your concerns about Jake's image, but I don't think he's at the point some higher profile actors are.Their personal "habits" are so over exposed,I have a hard time looking past their image to their acting ability. Tom Cruise is just one who immediately comes to mind. I also agree UV, that a large part of Jake's lack of recognition is due to homophobia. But Jake's made some very intelligent decisions, and he's very courageous (artistically) in his choices as well.

As far as Rendition goes, my own take on it probably states the obvious. The film was made by someone with the perspective of an outsider, not an American and in so doing, it gave offense. This wasn't a Clint Eastwood film. It was about something that is highly controversial; America engaging in, and supporting, kidnapping and torture. An "America's Sweetheart" portrays the mother of a young son, is visibly pregnant, and married to a Muslim. Government agencies and institutions are portrayed in a less than flattering light.

A morally ambivalent CIA agent
who spends much of his time on assignment in a drunken stupor, boffing his assistant, becomes the "hero," bcz he releases the prisoner. To add insult to injury, the Muslims in this story are humanized. They are given names and faces and lives. The story of Fawal and his family is very compelling, very heartbreaking, very engaging.

In spite of Reese, Jake, Meryl, Alan Arkin and Peter, Rendition was not an "American" movie. I believe we were deliberately discouraged from seeing this movie before it ever was released. Bad reviews with non specific complaints, and negative buzz put a huge damper on the film. And now that it's awards season, it's as if the film never happened. I am not surprised that it has been totally ignored, indeed, I don't expect it to make any "top ten" lists.

I thought it was a very well done film. I believe it will even rank among the more important films Jake ever makes. No one who participated has anything to be ashamed of. I am even willing to predict, that like Brokeback Mountain before it, Jake will be drawn to films like Rendition from time to time.

While I believe Jake will always look for quality projects, I think he will make more commercially viable movies in order to make these smaller, more meaningful gems as well.

UltraViolet said...

It's a fine line Jake has to toe, Bobbyanna. I think he does want to be a movie star, but he also wants to do important work. He's done a pretty good job so far playing in both worlds. I hope he gets the opportunity to continue.

As for Rendition, I still can't figure out what happened. The things critics objected to (the twist, the Fatima/Khalid storyline, Jake's performance) were all things I loved about the film.

I do think America isn't ready for a movie like Rendition. But I'm surprised so many critics weren't, either.
