Variety Screening: Love and Other Drugs

Variety held a screening of Love & Other Drugs in New York tonight. Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway and Ed Zwick were all in attendance. No official reports yet, but we did get this familiar reaction:

Wow. Wow. Jake Gyllenhaal in person = hotter and more charming than I could have ever imagined. I was like a teenager.

This Philadelphia radio station has some lengthy snippets of Jake, Anne and Ed at the press conference for L&OD. They talk about the usual subjects but you also get to hear Jake use the word "orgy." And both he and Anne complain that Ed didn't take any of their musical suggestions. It's a good listen; they have a great rapport.

Switching the pairings, here's Ed and Jake discussing the movie:

From an article about Jamie Reidy, whom Jake plays in L&OD:

Love and Other Drugs, which opens Nov. 24, is based on Reidy’s 2005 tell-all Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman (Andrews McMeel Publishing). The 20th Century Fox film, directed by Edward Zwick, stars Gyllenhaal as a roguish pharmaceutical salesman skating by on as little work as possible, and Anne Hathaway, as a patient-turned-love interest. "It’s surreal on so many levels--watching Jake Gyllenhaal as me, respond to being called Jamie, behaving the way I did, having the same conversations I had back in 1997," says Reidy, 40. "I was so distracted by those things, I had to see it again, just to catch everything I missed."

The R-rated movie focuses more on fictionalized sexual exploits and manipulations--sleeping with receptionist gatekeepers or wrangling dates for doctors--than the book, which is more of a guide to creative work dodging and making quotas.
"The book is the jumping off point for the movie, which captures the book’s lighthearted, self-deprecating spirit," Reidy says. "But the slacker stuff is gone, and Jake’s character has more depth than I have. He starts out where I was--selfish--and begins to change after he meets someone he really cares about."

You can also watch a video where Jamie tries to sell sand to people. At the beach.

Hi~~~
found other positive review

the film is not great, but solid, esp. the performances from two leading actors.

Aww, you're welcome, Sunflower. It's not quite as hectic as the PoP days so it's still fun. Hopefully Jake is having fun too.

Thanks for the review, Viv. There seems to be consensus on the performances, at least. Hoping for good word of mouth and some more critical kudos.

Thanks so much for all the fantastic updates! He looks really good in all black. I'm so glad that Anne, Jake and Ed are doing all this together, you can tell that they are proud and excited about this film.

It's not as hectic as the Pop promotion but I think i'm enjoying this more because of the interactions between Jake and Anne, they are magic together.

The redband trailer is wild! I'm sure some may be put of on it but I had no problem with it at all!

Added a link in the post to a radio site that has some audio from the L&OD press conference. Definitely worth a listen.

Also added some stuff from a story about Jamie Reidy.

Hi Josie - missed your comment. There are a couple more things in the post :)

I agree that it's so much fun to see Jake with Anne and not always by himself this time around. Glad you enjoyed the red bad trailer.

My control is slipping, but I am still trying not to watch. Suvee, where are you???

I loved the "selling sand at the beach" video! Jamie's very likeable.

Radio interview was fun. Jake & Anne doing all these promos together's a real treat. I'm impressed with how much Ed Zwick is doing, too. He has been very accessible, making the rounds. I didn't even realize he was there until almost the end!

Look at it this way, UV. You have eight more days to wait. That's not so long...but why deny yourself.;)(heh!)

I like it when people say what they enjoy in clips I post, and I realized I didn't do that with the Jake/Ed clip. Love the part where they talk about Ed telling Jake to sing the lines. And Jake being all, "That's okay - I'll try it at home." Hee.

And the "emotionally promiscuous" quote was a good one. I like the idea of having permission to fall in love a little bit.

From twitter:

Gossip Girl filming near work. Jake Gyllenhaal hanging out a block away from my apartment. NEVER STAYING HOME AGAIN.

And:

speedwalked by jake gyllenhaal this morning in the chelsea market. if i wasn't late for a meeting i would have stopped to swoon.

Once again I am adoring all these interviews! Jake and Anne, along with Ed are such a delight to watch and this promotion has been a delight to see them doing all together.

And I of course have to squee seeing Jake back in NYC!

Bring on all the talk shows this week. :D

Cute stuff about the real Jamie.

And a Happy birthday to Maggie!

I'm enjoying all the interviews too, all 3 have a great rapport and respect and affection for one another.

Interesting that Jaime said that Jake brought another layer to the character towards the end, more sympathetic.

Selling sand at the beach::))

Can't wait to see him do the talk shows this week!

This is funny: NY Mag puts Jake's photo for Tobey Maguire. You can see the original photo here.

I think Jake would be a better fit than Tobey, but I'm not crazy about making it into a movie at all.

UV, they must have realized because there is a pic of Tobey now, lol.

Bobbyanna, Chelsea Market is really fantastic!! And I love that the High Line is right next to it.

The premiere is tonight??? I wanna know where!!

I love wandering Chelsea Market too, especially around this time of year.

I love when Jake is in NY, I hope his interviews are as fun and as the Q&A's and interviews Jake has been doing on the press junket. Not looking forward to Kelly and Regis at all:( I wish he was doing the Daily Show instead.

Funny aout the NY magazine mix-up, ha, ha!!

This is frustrating. That twitter was all I could find. I'll check again.

It's frustrating, chica!
The HP premiere was at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Cetner. But I don't think LAOD will be there. I'm thinking it will be at a regular movie theatre, and I'm really surprised there is not one mention of the venue. Trying to remember where PoP was held. Wondering where Fox usually has their premieres.

It's so frustrating and odd that they aren't giving out where Bobbyanna::((

I'm off to meet some friends for dinner and I will be away from the computer until I get home, THEN we will find out where, after the fact, sigh.

Thanks for keeping track!

Looks like it's at the DGA, if you're still around chica.

UV, here I am! (waves to UV).

Be strong, we don't have much longer to wait! :)
And I really do believe that it will be worth the sacrifice..... being able to enjoy L&OD with "new eyes" (sheba, love that description). Well, at least that's how it works for me. I want as few preconceived notions as possible going in.

I really liked the Jake & Ed clip (which has been removed now). Thanks, Monica! I was struck by how sincere Jake seemed when he agreed with Ed's tongue in cheek comment that Jake was a better singer than actor. We need to hear his real singing voice, not his jokey or playing around voice!

OT: Sorry, but I simply cannot see Leo D. as Jay Gatsby. If Jake were a bit older I think he could play that role very well. Not an easy book to make a good movie of though.

So the premiere was at DGA, that's the same place Brothers had it's premiere at. Jake missed it because he was filming LAOD.

He does look good in that twicpic, it looks like he is wearing the same suit from last night, I can't tell.

I never understood people getting Jake and Tobey mixed up, I never saw it. To me Tobey looks/looked more like Elijah Wood. Ang Lee cast them as brothers in The Ice Storm!

I think he will be on Kelly and Regis tomorrow, heads up everyone!

I wonder what that tool Ben Lyon's from E means by this:

WireImage and Getty have some great pictures up. Anne looks lovely.

I think tomorrow is Letterman, Thursday is Regis, and Friday is Fallon. Wondering about the morning talk show circuit. I think Anne's doing talk shows too, but separately.

UltraViolet said...

Tweety, I think that idiot, I mean Lyons, means that his interviews with Jake are often so over the top, they are hard to follow and probably to edit. Jake gets pretty silly with him.

Thanks for that info, Monica.

I think Anne was on Regis and Kelly this morning. Thanks for following the premiere news as it was happening, Bobbyanna. I was on my commute home and couldn't play along!

Suvee, thank you for the support! I will remain strong. I'll have to look for another version of that Zwick interview. Loved the parts you mentioned.

I also have no desire to see Gatsby as a movie. But I really don't want to see either Leo or Tobey in it.

It was one of my favorite books. I can recite lines from it. I don't think it's a book that can be adapted well, but I guess we'll see.

And OONP, I sometimes see pics where I can see the Jake/Tobey thing. But for a magazine to get it wrong is really embarrassing.

Get real and chica - any Jake spotting? :)
