Ten Years After

Academy Awards, 2006: Brokeback Mountain does not win for Best Picture. Countless stories have been written about one of Oscar's biggest and most notorious upsets. It's hard to believe it was 10 years ago. The Academy is probably not going to apologize for its error. But even as we lament what can never be, let's celebrate what was.

The trailer gave hints of how powerful the film would be:

In Venice and Toronto, the promise was confirmed. The movie premiered in the U.S. in December, 2005, to broad critical acclaim.

The lonesome chill that seeps through Ang Lee's epic western, "Brokeback Mountain," is as bone deep as the movie's heartbreaking story of two cowboys who fall in love almost by accident. It is embedded in the craggy landscape where their idyll begins and ends. It creeps into the farthest corners of the wide-open spaces they share with coyotes, bears and herds of sheep and rises like a stifled cry into the big, empty sky that stretches beyond the horizon.

Brokeback was nominated for all the awards in the 2005-2006 awards season, winning almost all the big ones.

But Oscar is the big one. The day arrived, and everyone looked elegant. And happy.

The show opened with a few Brokeback references:

Jake presented a desperate Oscar pitch to watch moves in the cinema:

Typical of the season, none of the Brokeback actors won:

BBM did win for Director, Screenplay and Score:

And then it all came crashing down. (If you watch the clip, you can see a few shots of Jake and Heath clapping for the winners.)

It was a dispiriting end to a wonderful ride. It stung that night and it stings a little still. But time and tragic reality have only confirmed the film's power and strength.

IHJ posted the photos from Jake Gyllenhaal's video shoot, and we got a lot of gorgeous profile shots.

And the full frontal deserves another look:

Car Talk

The sex scene between Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway has made this site's list of Top 50 Car Sex Scenes, coming in at #42.

Note: The site and the pictures can be NSFW; the commentary is not safe for thinking. And Jake is not the primary attraction for them. But he is for us!

Anne and Jake also enjoyed some auto erotica in a deleted scene from Love & Other Drugs:

Wish that one had gone on a little longer :)

Jake and Jennifer Aniston spent some front and backseat time in The Good Girl, though it wasn't R-rated:

Jake's also had some sexy photo shoots in cars:

This and that

Not too much happening in Jakeland, so let's clear out some of the miscellaneous file!

That's Jake over the weekend at Four Bear, er Barrel Coffee in San Francisco. Unique decor.

Speaking of bears... from Mr. Grylls:

Back in July, fans of the hit Discovery channel show "Man vs. Wild" watched Jake Gyllenhaal fight through hurricane-force winds and treacherous winter terrain in Iceland, but according to the show's star Bear Grylls, Gyllenhall got exactly what he wanted.

"He said, 'Don't hold back with me' and he got it," Grylls told Wonderwall. "We had some of the toughest conditions I've ever known on 'Man vs. Wild.' We took him to Iceland in winter. There were literally 100-mph-plus winds up there. Both of us were blowing like tumbleweed, but he really rose to it. It was great to see his confidence grow as he went on. I take my hat off to him. He worked really hard. He's one of the fittest guys in Hollywood."

Grylls says he tells all guests to train some -- but to not go too crazy before appearing on the show. The key is to stay injury-free and at full health before entering the wild. With the combination, he says, good things will happen. Both Gyllenhaal and Will Ferrell, who appeared on the show in 2009, followed Grylls' instructions and had successful experiences.
"The wild rewards commitment, and both of them really threw themselves into it," he said. "Will was far out of his comfort zone, but he really threw himself into it, and I admire the way he did that. I said to them beforehand, 'Just come on your own with no entourage, and trust me,' and they did that. They both say it was a landmark time in their lives, and I think they felt really proud of what they achieved."

Someone on tumblr posted this old photo of Jake:

Not sure where this one came from:

Hadn't seen this Australia interview for L&OD before:

Showgirls II?

Before Source Code kicks into full gear, we have one more Jake Gyllenhaal/Anne Hathaway video interview for Love & Other Drugs:

Here is a short video from the Australian premiere. It's more of an ad for Moët than anything else! But you do get to see Jake and Anne:

And another interview I hadn't seen; here's the first part. Just do a search for Jake's name and you can see the rest. They have annoyingly edited it into short snippets. There's also a PoP Jake interview available.

There is also a new TV spot for Source Code:

Not sure if this is new but it's a good one:

And a very nice review for the movie.

A couple of new clips:

All aboard the SC promo train

Lots of new stills from Source Code, plus interviews with Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Duncan Jones et al, at Trailer Addict. Plus three videos of b-roll from the set and a new scene. First up, Jake's interview:

The new scene. You might not want to watch - spoiler alert! (The spoiler is written on the video, so jump down if you don't even want to read it.)

Wired also ran a spoilery article sbout the science of SC.

There's news of Jake's other projects, as well. First up, a scene from the Love & Other Drugs Blue Ray:

You can watch a second deleted scene here.

Finally, news on unseen/unfilmed Jake projects. Variety reports that Jake is in talks to film a new movie with David Ayers, writer of Training Day and director of :

Exclusive: David Ayer is set to write and direct his latest cop drama "End of Watch," with Jake Gyllenhaal in early discussions to star.
Ayer and John Lesher will produce through Ayer's Crave Films and Lesher's Le Grisibi's Productions.

Plot details are vague; pic's being described as a gritty cop drama that follows the friendship between longtime partners. Ayer and Lesher are still putting the movie together and are out to financiers, so no production date has been set.

Deadline has information on the Nailed test screening:

The trouble is, he washed his hands of the film last summer because of all the money problems, and I'm told that last night's screening played like an assemblage of rough footage, without the nuance Russell would have injected had he finished.

The backers are going to shop the film for distribution, but it is obvious that Russell will do everything he can to appeal to the Directors Guild to remove his name.

And here's a not a very encouraging report from someone who saw the screening.

Globe Trotting

More tidbits and gems from Jake Gyllenhaal's appearance at Sunday's Golden Globe awards, before during and after. I was happy to see a picture of Jake and Anne Hathaway. After so much togetherness on the Love & Other Drugs tour, it was odd not to see them together.

The best thing about the Golden Globes is seeing the stars chatting and interacting during the breaks. Here, Christian Bale regales Anne, Jake and Jenny Lewis with what looks like a tall tale:

Jake with Tom Hanks:

And Rita Wilson:

The Prince and the Pirate:

Jake told Extra that he likes to meet his fellow celebs:

“I think it’s just fun to be around the people that you respect. Even if you’re in the business, you hear people’s names but don’t necessarily get to interact and see them as real people. Someone said to me the other day, ‘You're really funny. I didn’t know you were funny’ and I asked ‘What did you think of me?’ They said ‘I thought you were kind of a jerk.’ I was like ‘Oh wow, well, you should get to know me. I’m actually a little funny.’ You never know who people are until you meet them.”

At the table with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jenny Lewis:

Jake and Christopher Nolan:

Jake enjoyed the after-party scene. Here's Jake with Jenny, Jeremy Renner, Quentin Tarantino and Michelle Williams, waiting for their cars outside the Sunset Tower hotel:

And here's a brief glimpse of Jake on his way to the awards. He hasn't donned his tux jacket yet:
