"Why sign up for a film like this if you’re not game for some real action?”

In a new interview, Jake Gyllenhaal talks about running, jumping and having fun being bad.

IN the trailer of the upcoming film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, a muscular Jake Gyllenhaal is seen doing amazing moves in exciting action sequences.

One has him scaling a high castle wall by pulling himself up using arrows half-buried in the wall that had been shot at the castle by a comrade.

“I look pretty cool doing that,” says the soft-spoken Californian actor when interviewed in Santa Monica.

"Can I help it if my arms are too big?!"

“But what you don’t know is the behind-the-scenes goofs. My arm and shoulder muscles were so big that the chest plate I wore prevented me from reaching up to grab the arrows,” he says.

“There were many funny takes of me doing that and in the end, they literally had to cut wider arm holes in the chest plate,” he says with a laugh.

“I’ve always loved watching action-adventure films and dreamt of being one of those characters as a kid. You know, like Indiana Jones and the cool, swashbuckling Errol Flynn flicks,” he says.

“When I read Prince, I saw a clear role for me. This guy is wry, gets to do lots of fun stuff and best of all, is ‘bad’ and funny.”

For the film he learned parkour, which sees the environment as a jungle gym obstacle course. It was founded by David Belle. ...

“There is a scene where my character runs along a wall, which seems impossible, but Belle made it happen. It’s one of my favourite scenes from the film,” says Gyllenhaal ...

He says he does many of the stunts himself, including a 10.6-metre jump with wire work. “I wanted to do everything,” he says.

“Why sign up for a film like this if you’re not game for some real action?”

Remember last summer, when we heard that Jake went to the White House with Reese Witherspoon and Paul Rudd? Still no photo of Jake with the President, but here he is at the back gate:

We're getting closer!

Hi Ultraviolet,
personalmente le foto con Reese W. non le avrei inserite, considerando il comportamento che Resse ha avuto con il nostro Jake.
Lei ha veramente truffato i sentimenti di Jake !!
Comunque è sempre un piacere vedere le foto di Jake :-)

Jake had such a blast making Pop and worked so hard, I hope that it's a big sucess for him! Countdown to May....

We are getting closer to finally getting an actual picture of Jake and the President together I hope, great find UV!

Thanks for posting all the LAOD reviews from the screenings.

Jake went to the Velvet last night to see Death by Analog last night in Montreal:

She [Anne]seems to have gotten the majority of the naked press.

This struck me as funny. :)

I hope Ambivalent Anon will give us more info! I usually try to avoid spoilers too - major spoilers to the plot - but some details I don't mind, and I try to make myself forget them. :) Thx.

Cathy E said...

^^Should clarify that comment - when I read it literally, it made me think of the press actually naked, which made me smile. (I apologize for my weird sense of humor.) Looking forward to hearing more about LaOD! :)

Nice interview,UV and good catch on the White House pictures.

I think Prince of Persia:Sands of Time, is going to do well at the box office. But I do think Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney made a huge mistake not to come up with a 3D version of it. It would have been really amazing to showcase the special effects in 3D. Bruckheimer didn't want to spend the extra money and it would have been a good investment.

There are just as many cons to filming in 3D as there are to pros. Some filmgoers, filmmakers and film critics don't like the 3D experience. Some do.

Let me direct you to an interesting article in today's NPR blog - How often would you pay $20 to see a movie in 3D

I see Jake finally made his way to Kirsten's local Montreal haunt. Heh.

Nice find on the White House pics, UV. I see Mr. Rudd dressed for the occasion. ;-)

I wondered about Pop in 3D too anon. If any movie screamed 3D, it's Pop!

Cathy E said...

I'm gonna have to disagree with Martin Scorsese (!) whom I love as a director, btw. I think 3D should be reserved for the other worldy, action adventure type movies, or where nature is the primary part of a story, and you wouldn't want to grow tired of 3D by seeing it everywhere, have it become old hat. It was quite an experience watching Avatar tho, but on some of the previews for other movies before it that were in 3D, I found it kind of annoying. Thanks for the article, FL!

Anonymous said...

It's true that 3D bothers some people and they don't like it, but people could have chose to watch Avatar in regular or 3D depending on their preference.

Rosa, Bobbyanna and Sara - I'm not too fond of Reese's behavior, either, but I'd never not post a photo just because she's in it. They were together for a long time, and it would be weird to pretend it never happened.

I thought the photos were cool - a shot of something we hadn't seen before, so I posted them.

Cathy, I got what you were saying about the naked press - I was going for the joke there :) Never apologize for a weird sense of humor.

Thanks for the tweets, Tweety. Jumping out of a moving train is a little more exciting than my day so far!

FL, you know I was happy to se eJake looking spiffed up. I wonder if he's adjusting a tie there or just hit collar. Paul Rudd really went all out!

As for 3D, I'm with Cathy. No need to have every movie in 3D - totally unnecessary.

I'm starting to doubt that Prince of Persia will be shown at Cannes this year. They announced today that Robin Hood will open the festival and Wall Street 2 is widely expected to premiere there, out of competition, as is The Rum Diary.

A film like POP usually opens these types of events and since the film will open across Europe the week before I don't think it needs any additional publicity by showing it at Cannes a few days into the festival.

In any event, if it should be shown at Cannes, we will probably learn about it this week.

Pretty discouraging, but there should be many photos of various premieres throughout Europe that week to get everyone by before Jake returns stateside for his US promotion of the film.

Thanks so much for all the updates, interviews with Jake, reactions to LOAD and the pictures at the White House.

I am on holidays and try to check in from time to time and my first visit is always here....

UltraViolet said...

Hey, Carla. Hope you're having fun travels.

BS, I don't think it's so discouraging if PoP doesn't play at Cannes. As you said, it won't suffer from lack of promotion. It's a little disappointing, just because the red carpet is fun. But it's not going to affect the movie, really.

bobbyanna said...

(Ohhh,UV. You're right, of course. I know we can't pretend it didn't happen. I was glad you found more pictures from that visit. I'm sure someday I won't mind at all :( )

I'm SO glad I didn't go ahead and confirm my reservations at the Eden Roc! LOL!!

I was happy to see photos of Jake at the White House. Great find.

I'm not crazy about Reese right now either, but there are some very sweet photos of them as a couple on love. Being irritated with her is not a reason to not enjoy the photos, IMO. And it does seem silly to wipe out an important part of Jake's life, he spent three years with her.

Having said that, I can't wait for him to find a new love, someone young and pretty and without a lot of baggage.

Me too. It would be nice to see. I shouldn't, but I'm not crazy about seeing her with a new guy so soon either.

3D works with some films(Avatar) and doesn't work with others(Disney's A Christmas Carol)

IMO a film like Pop is made for 3D, but it would have already added to the rather large budget. Thanks for the article FL.

I would love to see Jake at Cannes, but the movie will do just fine w/o it.

I don't have a problem looking at pics of Jake with Reese in them, well I should say some pics.I try not to let them get to me. I hope the next pic you find UV, the Preseident is posing with Jake!

Thanks for the interview UV, and ditto Cathy (re: Reese).

bobbyanna said...

Whoa, LG. We'll just have to agree to disagree. The pics UV found at the White House are great, as I said earlier. And they don't bother me nearly as much as some would, hardly at all, really.

Who suggested three years of Jake's life be "wiped out." Not me! Sorry if you got that impression. I just don't respect her. Sorry. That's how I feel. Guess I'm being petty. But, hey! So what!

Maybe I'm still peeved about her people leaking info out on the very eve of his movie opening. That was rotten. And pretty selfish, too.

"..there are some very sweet photos of them as a couple on love."

Yeah. There're lots of pictures of people coupled up,walking around all happy and in love. Reese seems to like those kinds of pictures.

Give me a couple of years. I like some of the old pics with Kirsten now. They were SO young! :)

bobbyanna said...

Just want to add that I really trust the judgement of UV/FL. So I'm going to not react in future if pictures are posted with people in them that I happen not to be a huge fan of. I'm Sorry. Didn't mean to prolong this discussion.

The photos posted of Jake, Reese and Paul Rudd at the WH from last year don't bother me, I just wish that it was that President Obama was in the picture!

The only photos of Jake and Reese that get to me now are the ones with her kids, nuff said.

It's going to be a big year for Jake with Pop and LAOD and he is busy filming SC. I don't know if he is looking to get into a relationship again at this point but I would love for him to get involved with a smart, funny woman who is NOT in showbiz!

Happy B-day to the Speaker of the House, madame Pelosi!

It's a difficult call, I guess. Jake comes out of a filmmaking family background. It's such a part of him, I think he'd have to have some common ground with who ever he choses.

Colin Firth married a documentary filmmaker who was an assistant on a movie he shot,Tobey Maguire's wife comes out of a film industry family, and Matt Damon married a PA he met on a movie shoot.

These are women who know the business, and understand it, but they aren't IN it. They all seem happy. I won't be surprised if Jake continues to be attracted mostly to people in the same line of work.

The White House pics are a great find! They don't bother me at all.

However, it appears I have developed an almost irrational response to seeing pics of her with her new guy. It's a visceral reaction.... in a bad way. Can't help it.... it may be unfair since I'm certainly not privy to what happened with J & R, but too bad. She's ended up on my s**t list.

I want to see Jake out and about with a beautiful, smart, accomplished, cool lady asap. I don't even care if she's not the love of his life. I just want a message sent to you know who. Yeah, I'm petty, too. :)

And Happy Birthday to Speaker Pelosi!

This interview is so great. So good to know how Jake had fun during the filming of POP.

Thanks for the photos, UV. Would love to see a picture of Jake and Barack Obama together.

Cathy E said...

To tell you the truth, it didn't bother me that much to hear about the breakup, but when I hear about Ojai, that kinda bothers me. Who could replace Jake? I have to admit I love the pics of him with Kirsten too - I read above where he was at one of Kiki's favorite haunts? Wouldn't kill me if they were getting back together. I just hope he finds someone who loves him and is good to him! :) That's it from me on this, I promise.

The pictures posted are fine, it's not like they are holding hands or anything. I have no comment on Reese and her "adventures".

I enjoyed reading that interview, thanks!

Clash of the Titans has 3D effects that were added after the fact (Gemma is in this film as well). I hear the results aren't stellar so perhaps Disney/Bruckheimer/Newell felt that if they did the same, it would look a bit tack, JMO.

The film will do just grate w/o 3D effects. Love all the positive buzz on LAOD.

Happy belated birthday Nancy!

Was just thinking about 3D movies and the big box-office. As we know it cost extra money for 3D tickets. So if POP doesn't reach that 100 million right off - as some of the 3D movies have done - won't mean a lot as the price of the ticket won't be as much.

I didn't know that Jake was a Kung-fu exponent! Love that article, he sounds so excited . I hope Pop opens up big in May and is a big sucsess for him. Can't wait!

Things sure have changed since that White House visit. Not happy with Ms. Witherspoon's antics as of late, but i'm cool with these photos.

Thanks Monica for that link. Homicide was one of my favorite shows, and the episode with Jake and directed by his Dad was heartbreaking.

I run hot and cold regarding 3D. No doubt that it would add an exciting element to Pop, especially with the parkour scenes but I thik that the film will be more than a thrill ride without it.

A very happy belated birthday to Nancy Pelosi!

Hehe me too, those arms are awesome. 3D Jake would be seriously bad for your health ;D

This might sound silly, but I love the way he moves. I think he's had a lot of movement training or something. Maybe it's because he's so athletic, but the pictures off the trailer clips are beautiful.

tweety, I also read something from a guy who said he was going to interview Jerry Bruckheimer and Jake Gyllenhaal, and some refrence to Wondercon in April, in San Francisco. I found it puzzling since PoP isn't a comic book...altho, it could be.

One more thing. I know Evelyn O'Neill is Jake's manager, and she co-owns Management 360. But his agent is with CAA, and I don't know who that is. I'm wondering if this persom meant agent or manager, bcz sometimes people use the term interchangeably.

Tweety said...

Bobbyanna, Wondercon takes place next weekend in SF and Jake, Jerry and J.Mechner will be attending. Wondercon is sort of a mini Comic Con. I saw that tweet too about interviewing Jerry and Jake, I bet it's related to Wondercon. Pop isn't a comic book but Disney is trying to attract that audience and I think Mechner is doing some Pop graphic novels.

I think Jake's agent's name is Kim something and yes people mix-up agent and manager a lot.

UltraViolet said...

Jake's agent's name is Kim Hodgert. I have no idea why this person is meeting with her, but here's how it wwnt:

Well that was fun, we had high tea complete with finger sandwiches, scones and outrageous pastries while looking at pics of Jake's dog

From up above: I didn't know that Jake was a Kung-fu exponent!

That made me laugh, too, sheba baby. Do you think Jake does promotional videos that we can find? ;)

Looks like Alanis Morissette will be doing the PoP theme song:

The song is called "I Remain"

http://www.hans-zimmer.com/fr/newsite.php?rub=detail&id=942

and it's on amazon too!

bobbyanna said...

Thanks, UV. Great news about the song. I like Alanis.

About the young girl who had tea with Jake's agent. It sounded to me as if she was 'along for the ride' and it was her mother who had the meeting. She made a comment in one of her tweets that the hotel was very posh, etc. & it was all because of her mother. Other tweets to friends made me wonder if they were Brits. Total speculation, of course! :)

FL said...

Sounds like that high tea was in fact at a hotel in London, where Sam Worthington, also Kim Hodgert's client, was upstairs sleeping. Something about the Empire Awards coming up.

bobbyanna said...

See! (joking!)

Love the interview with Jake, it won't be long before we get the full blast of the Disney promo for Pop.

If there is an actual photo of Jake and the President, UV will be sure to find it!!

I think that girl was a Brit too Bobbyanna, "posh" is a big clue! How cool was it for her to tag along, and his agent showed pictures of Atticus!

I love Alanis, what a cool choice to sing the Pop theme song.

I saw Alice in Wonderland yesterday, it was ok but IMO the 3-D effects didn't really add anything to the movie.

bobbyanna said...

Harry Gregson Williams is the composer for PoP. He did the soundtrack for one of my favorite Cate Blanchett films, "Veronica Guerin." The story takes place in Ireland, and he did an extraordinary job of weaving traditional Irish music into his original score. It remains one of my favorites. Very haunting.

(I think the Empire awards event was last night, FL.)

Just been reading these user comments on IMDB, all I can see is I am looking forward to LAOD more and more.

Just a couple of quotes,

This is absolutely, hands down the best role Jake Gyllenhal has ever played.

The chemistry is off the charts between Jake and Anne which is obvious but the other characters do a fantastic job standing out as well.
