Jake Gyllenhaal - Dastan the trickster

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner appeared at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday where he chatted about his upcoming Prince of Persia graphic novel as well as Disney's in-development movie adaptation of his bestselling videogame.

Some of the more interesting things he had to say:
  • While the movie is based on the Sands of Time game, the script does not literally follow beat to beat the storyline of the game. Does not expect any potential film sequels to be based on the subsequent games Warrior Within and The Two Thrones since they took the game's storyline in a different direction. Nothing from either of those games, including characters, will be in the current movie.
  • Wants the viewer to be taken on an emotional journey and to care about the characters so that way it's not all just about fighting monsters and action set-pieces.
  • Chose the name "Dastan" for the prince because he believes its an old Persian name that means "trickster."
Well, close but not exactly. According to Wikipedia:

The Dastan is an ornate form of oral history present in Central Asia. The Dastan conveys values and traditions of generations of peoples. A Dastan is centered on one individual who protects his tribe or his people from an outside invader/enemy. This main character sets an example of how one should act; the Dastan has now become a teaching tool. (Read more at the link.)

Whereas, and I think I like these definitions better, a "trickster" is:

-- a human or animal character of a folktale who constantly tries to outsmart or outwit other characters but does not always succeed and is sometimes the loser, not the winner.
--a supernatural figure appearing in various guises and typically engaging in mischievous activities, important in the folklore and mythology of many primitive peoples and usually conceived as a culture hero.
--a character or figure common in Native American and African literature who uses his ingenuity to defeat enemies and escape difficult situations. Tricksters are most often animals, such as the spider, hare, or coyote, although they may take the form of humans as well.

In mythology, and in the study of folklore and religion, a trickster is a god, goddess, spirit, man, woman, or anthropomorphic animal who plays tricks or otherwise disobeys normal rules and norms of behavior.

  • He's happy with the cast and that he trusts director Mike Newell on that because he's an actor's director and will make the movie a special experience for a game-to-film adaptation.
  • The film allows the prince to interact with other characters besides fighting them. He said that the pleasures of this type of movie is its large cast of colorful, memorable characters.
  • Wants the story to offer viewers a journey that takes them to more places than just a castle.
  • Due to secrecy, he would not reveal what powers the prince might have in the movie or discuss key plot elements.
  • Said that he at one time he considered doing PoP as an animated film but that the combination of Disney, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell doing a live-action movie proved too irresistible.
Oh thank you Jerry Bruckheimer and Mike Newell for being irresistible.

Last December in a Q&A Mechner was asked what the differences are between writing for a video game and writing for a film? How closely does the movie storyline correspond to the games? At that time he said: "If you summarize the movie in one sentence, it sounds identical to the first Sands of Time videogame, but scene by scene it's actually completely different. It has to be, because games and film are such different mediums. On the surface they're deceptively similar -- you can watch five minutes of an action-adventure videogame and think "this could be a movie," or vice-versa -- but structurally the requirements are totally different.

Here's one example: The game kicks off with a cataclysm that basically destroys the world and turns all living creatures except for the three main characters into raging, murderous sand monsters. That was a great setup for the gameplay we had, which was "acrobatic Persian survival horror."

But if you put that setup in a film, it would be a "B" movie, and that's not the kind of movie Prince of Persia should be. Our model is classic epic, swashbuckling action-adventure movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Zorro, and Thief of Baghdad, with humor and romance and full of memorable characters. You can't get there if you turn everybody into sand monsters on page fifteen.
"

The goofiest photo manip of all time

Since we know how Mechner has envisioned Dastan maybe it's time to take a sneak peek into where some filming will take place.

FIRST LOOK! FIRST LOOK!

According to several travelers to Morocco this past June, film sets were being erected at the fortified city of Aït Benhaddou along the Ouarzazate River in the High Atlas Mountains. Neither report included pics of the sets, but lucky for us some kind Flickrerers took a pop by. . .

Looks like the PoP set has been constructed just on the other side of the ksar.

Aït Benhaddou looks like something right out of the Universal/Disney/Paramount backlot. Even though many films have used this location throughout the years, there are in fact as many as ten families who still live within the ksar.

If you're planning a weekend break to Aït Benhaddou note that it is accessible from Ouarzazate and Marrakech, however, buses do not run direct to Aït Benhaddou but can drop you off at the turn off about 7km away from where you will have to get a lift.

From Marrakech it will be a full day trip and the best advice is to organize a private tour if you do not have much time.

Or one could travel to Aït Benhaddou the old fashioned way.

2010 seems like a long way off, but I understand their concerns. Better that they doing it right then rush it to theaters.

I'm a bit concerned about Nailed as well, I hope it doesn't have a problem finding a distributer.

Cute find sass!

Hey I say bring on a Jake drought, only if he marries Reese this next year, ONLY. He has to give us something to be excited about besides Brothers, and the doubtful possibility of Nailed getting a wide theatrical release. But hey I'm still in the camp for a fall wedding, so maybe they'll be married end of this year after all with production looking iffy to finish anytime soon. With the possibility of a break like I believe pointed out. Only problem is, he'll have to keep his homeless look for awhile, even in his wedding photos.

I hope we hear more today about PoP, and the production schedule.

Wouldn't surprise me if they had a shooting script ready to go for the Joe Namath biopic buy the end of February, early March. Figure a five or six week shoot, maybe ready for theatres in November '09 or possibly around Superbowl, '10.
I think Nailed will find a distributor and we'll see it next year, while Jake toils on the UMP next year as well. I just hope more movie projects are added to his schdule.

Disney have taken a bad hit with the 2nd Narnia pic lately. The first did very well; who would have thought that the 2nd wouldn't even cover its costs? Hence, I am thinking, the determination to get this one right. There's more than just box office receipts at stake. The sales of tie-in games, etc. for such a film ought to be huge, if they get it right.

But - oh! - it's such a long time off!

I don't think the Namath script is anywhere near done. I don't think they have financing or a studio either.

Both the writer and the director have other projects lined up. I don't think they'll be ready to work on this project until mid to late next year at the absolute earliest, and maybe not even then.

As for the UMP, I thought they decided to re-write that from scratch. This film does have financing and studio support (Dreamworks), but it doesn't have a satisfactory script.

So, if I had to guess, i'd say that this will most likely be Jake's next project. It'll probably film next summer or fall.

Also, the good thing about UMP is that it will likely film in a studio in LA, which is good for Jake as well since he can stay close to home.

Another good thing about this delay is that Jake won't really have to worry about his other projects conflicting. Initially I had worried about him having to work on the Moon Project, potentially the Namath film and the sequels for POP at around the same time.

Now it doesn't look like that's going to happen. He can just develop and work on those other two projects normally, since they won't even begin considering the sequel to POP until at least the summer of 2010 and even then won't likely film it until 2011.

It gives Jake a bit of a breather, which is good. I think this delay actually really works in Jake's favor.

Sorry to spam...

But given the delay in POP's release, Jake will almost certainly have mid-December (after production and Brothers promotion is finished) to next summer (or possibly fall) off.

We don't know if Jake's break will turn out to be that long, bs. Even if neither UMP nor the Namath pic is ready before then, it's entirely possible that Jake will find another movie to do.

We didn't hear about Brothers or Rendition until just before he began shooting them.

I've thought about that UV.

I don't think the Namath film will shoot until the late summer or early fall --- if it's done in 2009 at all. Football movies always come out in August to October of any given year for obvious reasons. Thus it'll be shot around that time as well.

If neither of the films he is attached to are ready, I can see Jake signing up for another heavy drama (like Brothers). Those films are usually done in the fall as well, in preparation for the Oscars. Sometimes they are shot in January or February, if the director can get it together after a few months of post-production, but I can't imagine Jake shooting another film this January or February, after essentially shooting six months in a row.

Most logically, I think he'll be shooting UMP next.

I certainly can't see him signing up for another big-budget type of film this spring/summer, with him being the star of the POP franchise and attached to UMP.

Besides, let's not forget that he was working for the better part of the past year. All of his films have been done on location. I have a feeling that Jake may want a nice long vacation after that.

Given all of that, I don't think a six to nine month break is that weird of a proposition.

Of course, it's just speculation on my part, but I think that's how it'll play out: if UMP is ready to shoot in the summer, he'll make that in the summer. Otherwise, I can't see him making another film until next fall.

I have to say I love this place. Only here can people like me worry about how Jake is going to look in his wedding photos.:)

And I like the new feature of being able to look for the newest posts, it can be cumbersome when there are lots of replies, so this is a good new feature. Go blogger!

Silly story from the NY Daily news via the Star:

Finally some good news. Jake Gyllenhaal is so proud of his recently buffed biceps, says Star, that he has asked for assurance that at least 80% of his "Prince of Persia" costumes will be sleeveless. In other news, Gyllenhaal is now being managed by Mario Lopez.

http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2008/08/01/2008-08-01_katie_holmes_boots_the_cruise_inlaws.html

We will all have to wait a bit longer for the sleeveless Prince!

UltraViolet said...

Well, your speculation was that he might not work until next fall, which would make it sloer to a 9-12 month break, depending on when PoP finishes filming.

In any case, as I said, if neither Namth nor UMP is ready, I hope Jake signs to something else.

In other news, People talks to Jake's co-star and Reese's friend:

The romance between Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon is soooo "right," a friend of the couple tells PEOPLE.

"I dig Jake and Reese together," says Clifton Collins Jr., an old pal of Witherspoon, 32, and Gyllenhaal's costar in the upcoming film Brothers. "They seem happy."

And Collins Jr., should know. "I've known her since she was 17 – we used to have the same agent. She's precious. She's fun and sweet, and dedicated – she really cares about her work," he tells PEOPLE at the Maxim Extreme Sports Party on Thursday at the Stork club in Los Angeles.

Gyllenhaal, 27, seems a great match for her, he says. "He's got this big, lovable heart. He's just like that."

So would Gyllenhaal make a good dad?

You betcha, he adds. In fact, "He's a big kid. And he's very playful." Indeed, Gyllenhaal has had a lot of practice: He's uncle to 22-month-old Ramona, his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal's child with Peter Saarsgaard, and has been spending lots of time with Witherspoon and her kids, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4.

Watching Gyllenhaal and Witherspoon together, "I see smiles, so something's gotta be [going] right," Collins Jr. says.

I had no idea who this was until Brothers, and no idea until judt now that he was a friend of Reese's.

Sorry, LGB, that's only a feature when you go over 200 replies! I agree that getting to the new replies is a drag when there are a lot.

And ITA on the wedding photo issues - it's god to know there's a place to discuss these important issues! Hee.

I don't think I'll mind the long hair for the photos, but since we never saw a Reese/Ryan wedding pic, I worry the same will happen with Reese and Jake.

Clifton Collins, Jr. has always been a favorite of mine!!! He is a brilliant character actor. My favorite Clifton Collins role was as "Frankie Flowers" the haples assassin in Traffic. He was in a Capote movie, too. Fine young actor.

Bette said...

LG, seriously though, I'm worried he'll have to keep the hair and look like a bum in his wedding photos.

Anonymous said...

I think Jake might actually finish up PoP, certainly by mid - end of October. He may take a break in September to promote Brothers, then complete his work so he'll be free to work on more "personal projects." (cough! cough!)

Which means he can get rid of his hair extensions! I don't think we will be without pictures if they do the deed. When Reese and Ryan tied the knot, things weren't quite as intense as they are now. And even tho they may hate it, Jake and Reese seem realistic when it comes to the media.

To avoid intrusive nonsense, they might even permit an exclusive photoshoot or something. It might even be some high end magazine like Vanity Fair or Vogue.OR: They might release something well after the fact. I bet someone already approached them with a deal! Kind of "If you ever decide..." ;)

In any case, there are no secrets with internet and cellphone cameras everywhere. If you are someone who is always being covered, like Reese, it is almost inescapable.

It seems as if the media is keeping a respectful, but very watchful distance. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Bette, I kind of like the long hair.:)

And Jake won't look like a bum on his wedding day, he cares about Reese too much for that.

I know some people don't like Hell's Angel Jake, but I like him looking like that.

It snks that we have to wait till '09, but i think it will be worth the wait. Plenty of time to do it right and to promote it properly.
