It takes more muscles to frown...

... than to smile. Clearly, Jake Gyllenhaal used up all his strength working out, so he happily greets the paps outside the gym on Tuesday in L.A.

Video here.

Some more video fun. The folks at PopSugar have some bonus footage from the PoP screening. Jake appears just at the end.

Here's a compilation of some of the best interview moments from Jake's PoP promo tour:

And in case you missed it, Part Two of Dastan, Jr. Ben Kingsley is priceless!

Finally, if you're in Hollywood, check out the costumes and props from PoP at the El Capitan theater. Looks like they have a lot of cool stuff, including the dagger of time itself. So be careful :)

Dastan jr is a riot and I really like the collage of “Jake” moments during his interviews.

Suvee, I agree with you - and I always admired the fact that Jake refused to go with the mainstream. Nobody expects from movies like “Rendition” or “Brothers” a big box office draw, but both films also were not received with great enthusiasm from the critics and during awards season. At least “Brothers” got Jake mostly good reviews.

I had hoped PoP would rise some power for Jake and make it easier for smaller projects like the Namath biopic getting some money and finding a producing studio.

UV, I also did not understand which target group they were aiming at - with a PG13 rating and the first posters (“Defy the furture” etc.) it did not look like a family movie and I was also surprised when Jake suddenly started to talk about the kids and families. Try to please everyone and you will please no-one.....!

I have high expectations towards LAOD and SC - and I hope Duncan Jones will have more luck with his second film as Gavin Hood with “Rendition”. Both films are already getting good buzz on the net - Duncan Jones has build a solid fanbase with “Moon” and the SC script is getting excellent reviews.

Good to see Jake out and obviously in a good mood - hopefully he is working out for the Namath project...:-))

BTW - I just checked my order for the “Brothers” DVD at Amazon and saw that Prince Of Persia DVD will be out on September 30 here!

Jake will have no problem getting movie roles. POP isn't going to keep him from that. In fact he will probably get offers to do more action things. Just depends on if he likes the story.
Be nice too if he could have the time to do some stage work.

The costumes are stunning, and I love the details on the props. Thanks for the links. I'll take a look at the videos on my break!

From the previous post: I already bitched about Bruckheimer stealing Pop's and Jake's thunder during the L.A. premiere. Disney marketing did a poor job down the stretch promoting it. I agree that they really didn't know who they were marketing it to, it was all over the place.

I think Disney realeased some data after the first weekend that said that 58% of the audience was males ages 18-30, I think.

When I saw it the audience did skew to males, late teens, early 20's . There were some families and some women and teenage girls, but about 60% were males.

I read on other sites and blogs from the fanboys that saw it that it was better than they thought, but they probably won't see it again in the theater. They will probably check it out on DVD.

That's not the the type of ringing endorsement, and not the type of response that will get repeat viewers or get friends to go see it

They also had no problems with Jake as Dastan, it was the movie that was just meh.

I really appreciated suvee's observations about Jake's film choices. I remember back in BBM days, both Heath and Jake saying they wanted to do something different, and BBM was a love story that hadn't been done before.

I think Jake has deliberately avoided commercial cliches and trite material, in favor of movies that say something, or are unique in some way.(Even TDAT).

I guess when an actor signs up with an agent, they talk about goals and career strategies, etc. I'm glad Jake's "career strategy" has been first, to establish himself as a respected, credible actor. He's definitely recognized for that, and his movies hold up well over time, too.

I remember something Maggie said when she signed on for TDK. She jokingly said she loved her indie work, but she also wanted to be in movies that people actually saw.

Jake's ahead of the game in that respect, but he'll likely appear in more commercial stuff as time passes. I think he will always be looking for substance in his characters and in the story and over all quality in his movie choices.

I agree, Anon, 8:31.

I have a feeling Jake is staying in shape for a reason. Movie role??? Love to see him smiling and laughing at the Paps. Wonder if he is planning to go to SA for the World Cup.

Saw this on Twitter:

"ManMadeMoon 4th week of editing Source Code, and by god, I think we may have an actual film here! Did I mention editor Paul Hirsch is god?"

I had the same feeling, although I'll be going to see again this weekend with my nephew who loved the movie.
But unlike what happened with Batman, this movie did not attract my interest in seeing more than once.

They also had no problems with Jake as Dastan, it was the movie that was just meh.
Exactly, although I feel that this character is not for him.

I remember something Maggie said when she signed on for TDK. She jokingly said she loved her indie work, but she also wanted to be in movies that people actually saw.

She signed to one of the best films of recent years.
But I understand what she means. Logical that TDK has made the world knew her work and also brought more job offers for her.
Speaking of Maggie, she and Peter will return to the theater in January.

Her husband, Peter, is playing a villain in the movie Green Lantern!

I don't think any role Jake has done has not been a right kind of role for him. Being an actor of great talent don't see him not being able to fit right into about any role given him.
Imagine if you aren't interested in a certain type of movie no matter who is in it you might not care much for how the actors play their roles.
Batman is a completely different type of film than POP.
They didn't want a Rambo type for their Prince. they wanted someone who could show heart along with being able to do action scenes.

Monica said...

I was not referring to all the roles he did in the cinema, just Dastan. But I think I have this feeling because of the bad script and bad direction of Mike Newell.

Batman was just an example about having a desire to see more than once in the cinema. I will never compare Batman with POP.

I really liked How to Train Your Dragon, was a movie I went to see twice in one week.

Hey UV, I take on board that the UK as well as the US have not embraced PoP as well as it should have. I think that the Persian argument is the thing I'm hearing that they're not happy about. But it still has done extremely well but at the moment we have 'Dance Fever' in the UK - Streetdance 3D to be exact. Most youngsters want to see that movie and because of Britain's Got Talent is on at the moment, it's gripped the country. Plus, I believe that only 25% of the UK has even heard of Prince of Persia.

I was asking some parents at my son's school today. They've said they heard the kids talking about it but they thought it was the game. I agree with the comment from the previous posts that Disney should have made the promo of PoP an EVENT definitely.

I adore Dastan Jnr. I love how Sir Ben toys with him "I have no fear of the future of Dastan and Tamina now that I've met you". What a bold and enterprising young man - Gemma couldn't contain herself. What a riot :DD

With all the annoying, shaky shots and missed opportunities, Prince of Persia is still a beautifully stunning film. I've got to say what a wonderful evening I've just had with my family. We've all just come home on this wet, thundery night with all smiles and warm feeling after watching Prince of Persia. Yes, I did threaten to evict my eldest son if he didn't come - but he absolutely loved it and he grudginly said so. He's played the game many times and was able to tell me exactly which moves were in the game and the film. His girlfriend came too and because we missed the 1st 5 minutes (grrrrr) - it was Orange Wednesday and the queues were huge :( she said she's going to see it again with her girlfriends. The cinema was also full so we had to sit at the front.

At the end of the film, for the first time, there was applause and cheers. Amazing, I couldn't believe it. Walking out a couple were talking about it behind me, they said they loved it but hated the end - to predictable. I turned around and said "well there's room now for Prince of Persia 2" to which they agreed and said "I'd watch that, it was so good".

And so, this adventure may be coming to a close for me as this is #10 and the cinema staff are getting to know me, I'm running out of cinemas to go to :) I can't wait until September. This has been deeply satisfying.

Sheba are you in the US or UK? I've never been to a movie where they applauded :P

Tweety said...

Nice to see that gorgeous Jake smile and I love his hoodie:))

I think he definately preparing for another movie with these gym visits, we will find out soon enough.

What a great clip of Kingsley and young Dastan. Disney misfired with it's promotion of this movie, but we are still getting little gems and interviews like this.

I've seen Pop twice ( I bow down to you Sheba, 10 times! That's fantastic!) and despite some problems with the movie like editing, clunky dialog I loved it.

The BO has been disappointing but it's not Jake's fault, he made a great Prince and was more than convincing as an action star.

Jake chose this role because he loved the script and character. It's obvious the script changed, it's never a good sign when you have 3 names attached to the screenplay.

SC and LAOD are 2 totally different roles and I'm looking forward to both.

BTW, I heard applause both times , the first is when Dastan and Taminia finally kiss and the 2nd time was during the closing credits.

sheba said...

Hi Anon, I live in the UK and they're usually quite reserved over here so imagine my surprise.

Hi Tweety, the applause was at the end credits, they groaned at the near kisses and whooped at the real one.

I really don't get why the box office is seen as disappointing. I know we've gone over it many times but they have made their money back and more. It's making even more money now and they have moved the film to bigger screens to accommodate the crowds. For a 1st outing I think it's terrific. My son's girlfriend even said she forgot that Jake was American and that he did the accent really well.

Jacob should feel pride in his accomplishment and more power to him that he can branch out more now. I'd like to see a Pixar movie with him because I adore his voice, it's so soothing, sexy and comforting. He rounds his vowels and says complete words most of the time. He just needs to work on ditching the word 'like' (I hope I'm making sense it's 1:30am here, sleepy but happy :)

Sorry, I was away from a computer all day on Wednesday. Tweety, I do fear that with all the talk of marketing misfires and box office disappointment, it seems as if I/we didn't like the movie.

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. I liked all the performers, the sets, the costumes. I was disappointed by the direction mostly. But I'd see PoP 100 times before I ever sit through TDK again.

I know it's heresy, but I didn't find anything enjoyable about TDK except the Joker. And even that wasn't enough to make me ever want to see it again. The whole exercise was pretentious and ponderous. And Bale as Batman was just irritating.

Sheba, I envy you and your different PoP experiences. Sounds like you've had some great ones, even this time - despite missing the beginning!

Sheba baby, that's an interesting comment from the teenagers. No movie like PoP can succeed it if doesn't get that repeat business.

I don't think Jake will stop getting movie roles. But I want him to be able to have his choice of roles - and good box office helps assure that.

There's something I want to praise Disney for and that its for all the local extras they hired in Morrocco. That's an excellent way of giving back to the community. The size and scale of the armies and warriors was huge and convincing. I understand no CGI was used there. So well done Disney for that. The beautiful landscapes and haunting musical score stay with me and enfuse the soul with warmth. I'm just so glad we can come here and share our enthusiasm or shortcoming about this wonderful movie. I can't belive how Jake disappeared before my eyes and Dastan became so real. Did anyone else feel that?

Can't believe it. A short comment :)

Despite the misfires with the marketing and some problems with the script, I did enjoy this movie. No movie is perfect but Pop has been the best movie I have seen so far.

I have seen it twice and plan on seeing it for the third time, something I can't say for IM2, S4 and RH or AIW.

How wonderful that you have seen Pop so many times Sheba and to experience with so many freinds and family members!

I felt the same way about TDK too UV. Loved Heath as the Joker but Bale was a bore this time around as Batman. I saw TDK once in the theater and saw it again when it came out on DVD.

Tweety said...

I think that everyone that saw Pop that posts here UV and gave their reviews said that they enjoyed the movie. The reviews did mention some problems with the script and editing and such, myself included but overall loved it.

The criticism of Disney marketing and the BO here were expressed as well, I think we could have done a better job marketing this movie!

Looking at the times of these tweets, I think that one includes a Jake look a like, I think it's the Voyuer tweet, most likely he was with Levine at Las Palmas:

i have seen pop twice already hope to see it again as i have said i enjoyed po pand jake did a great job yes it did have its problems as everyone has said about the script but all and all it is a fun movie which what i believe what it was made for my daughter really liked it too

I loved the movie too Mary, the flaws have already been discussed. But flaws aside, I had a blast! Jake was just perfect IMO.

I just think that Pop wasn't the type of movie that the masses were going to get too excited about. It's based on a VG and that may have turned some off.

Glad that Jake is hanging with his buddy Levine, they have know each other since school!

Some very good points were brought up here and the previous post.

Suvee, you are right that Jake rarely goes the mainstream route and becasue of that he has an impressive resume for an actor his age.

He will get a chance to do another action type role again because IMO he pulled it off in Pop, despite what some critics said. The wink and nod to the films of Errol Flynn nd Fairbanks for instance may have not inticed enough movie goers here in the States, but my wife had a blast!

Can't believe it. A short comment

Hee, sheba! All your comments are good, short or long!

I agree that Jake disappeared into Dastan. You can't really ask more form an actor than that.

Jake was definitely with Adam Levine last night. First at Nobu and then at Las Palmas. Lots of tweets about it, but no pics of them together, unfortunately. Always fun to hear about them hanging together.

It is understandable for us as Jakes fans to want him being successful. We had high hopes for PoP and now we are disappointed with the box office. But for most of us it did not change the fact that we enjoyed the film and had fun watching it with friends and family.

And I want Jake to do a blockbuster again - with all his presence in magazines, TVshows, singing and dancing with Jimmy Fallon, shitty MTV shows, being introduced to Dastan jr and having a bad conscience watching him having fun with the Russian ladies and Vodka.....:-)

I don´t think we will be getting such a Jake "overdose" with LAOD or Source Code.

And UV and FL did a great job keeping us informed and always up-to-date!

I don't have anything to add to your post Carla, you expressed what I and I think a lot of Jake's fans believe.

There are so many reasons why Pop didn't perform well in the US, but one of the reasons was not Jake, he has every reason to be proud of his performance.

I loved Pop, and I loved Jake as Dastan and yes Sheba he does have a beautiful voice.

Thanks for the link IHJ!

Ask and ye shall receive - I'll put those Adam and Jake pics in a new post.

Great post, Carla. Dittoing Bobbyanna and OONP's dittos :)

I really am grateful for the Jake bonanza we got because of PoP. it's true that LaOD and SC won't give us the same opportunities. And hopefully, Jake will do another blockbuster at some point, so we get the same all-Jake, all-the-time experience.

On a separate note, did anyone see Bradly Cooper on Letterman last night? I like BC, but he didn't pull off the three-piece suit look nearly as well as Jake did.

See where People has info. on Jake and Adam..and starts out..New BFF ?
or something like that.
They're joking & laughing & not paying much attention to any ladies there.
You know, it's nice to go out with a friend from school who you've known for years and you don't get to hang out with much and catch up and have a good time.

What happen to all those photos from the Pop/Disney photoshoot that was supposed to be used for promo that IHJ posted? With the exception of that one shot of Jake in the peacoat that People used for lsiting him at #5 as the sexist ( he should have been higher!) and the James Bond ensemble (my favorite)that was used for the Italian interview and the Candian interview, I can't remember the other pics in the set being used.

His other interviews used photos of him from photoshoots from when he was at WonderCon, and another photoshoot that was taken at a theater in L.A.

I think what I'm trying to say is that what happen to the other pics that were suppose to be used for Pop PR? I just think it's odd that all those pics were taken and only a handful was used.

The intern that posted that blurb on People should google instead of gleaming sightings from twitter. Because if they did, they would know that Jake and Adam have been friends from grade school and have hung out before, therefore there is no new BFF alert.

Of course they are joking and laughing, friends do that don't they? Trolling for girls in a celeb magnet is a no-no, and classless. I'm sure they don't want people tweeting about that despite that tweet last week about Jake at the Mumford concert.

How do you know that they don't get to hsng out mich anon? Based on pics and sightings?

Levine and members of Maroon 5 along with his ex GF, Jenny Lewis all either hang out or live in Venice and Silver Lake. Since he has been sighted and tweeted there a lot going back to last year I would assume he sees Levine and a whole bunch of friends that we don't know about (thank God).

It will be interesting to see how Pop does this weekend here and overseas. The WC will effect BO OS (I wonder if Jake will go to SA for USA vs England, he mentioned that he may go in an interview).

The A-team and the Karate Kid opens up this weekend, I think Kareate kid will knock S4 out of first place.

My only thought about not being able to hang out a lot with Adam is only the fact that when he's making movies in various parts of the country and the world it would kind of hinder spending as much time with a friend as they would like.
I am sure he is in touch with Adam and Chris and even Jenny and, as said, ones we don't know, by phone, e-mail etc.

Extra, I've seen the Jake photos used in a few foreign stories like the El Pais story Leonor posted a few days ago.

The People reporting on Jake is really pathetic. They continue to misreport the timeline of Jake and Reese's relationship. (Of course, they did have the scoop on the end of it.) But they apparently don't have the funds or capability to use google!
