Cover Boy

Okay, we need a new post, and Jake isn't cooperating, keeping his croc-wearing, crutch-wielding Gyllenhaal self holed up in LA, Ojai or somewhere in between. (Simi Valley?) So let's do a little cover story. Here's this week's US:

Us has been all over the Jake/Reese story. From April 2007:

People also jumped on the bandwagon, but more discreetly:

Even the lesser tabs (is that redundant) got in on the act:

I don't think I'd ever want Jake and Reese to do one of those cheesy photo spreads/confessional interviews. But it would be cool to see a professional photo shoot. What magazine do you think could make it work? Vanity Fair?

Speaking of which... it's beyond time for Jake to be on a VF cover. You can't fault Italian Vanity Fair, though. They know a good thing when they see it:

Some other favorite Jake covers:

If discussion of the Us story and attendant theories flags :) feel free to chime in with suggestions for Welliwont's poll question: What movie would you like to see Jake remake, and what role do you want him to play?

I always thought it would be fun to see Jake and Heath in a remake of Midnight Run :(

I could see Jake in either part. But I don't know now who I'd like to see play opposite him.

A reminder that tonight's Late Night with Conan O'Brien is a repeat of Jake's appearance from October.

Damn they look good! Very attractive couple. Very sexy.

I think a remake!

I wish that he had participated in Ocean's Eleven!

I've been a little under the weather with some virus thingy (not the flu, but not nothing either), so I'm late to the Ojai country estate discussion.

I love this house! I would be more than happy to escape (with Jake) to this lovely retreat. :)
And I couldn't help but notice the words "incredible privacy" in the real estate listing FL provided. Bet that was a big selling point too. I guess we were right..... some of that NYC power shopping J & R were doing was indeed for a house.....

I still think Jake will one day have his own house in MV..... he loves that place too much. And I would imagine he would really want his kids to have it in their lives.

I'm trying not to read anything about the US magazine article..... I should get my copy tomorrow, and I want to relax and enjoy it (allowing for the fluff filler) after a hard week. I'm kind of old fashioned..... online doesn't have the same satisfaction for me as having the physical magazine in my hands. Should be a good Friday!

Picking up on a point from the last thread.... I have a suggestion as to why Abbie Cornish is a non presence. Jeff Wells, a shrewd industryite (Hollywood-Elsewhere) pointed out weeks ago that Stop Loss would be a hard sell, as Iraq + war = box office poison. He thought that PR would play down the Ryan/Abbie thing and keep her out of sight, and I suspect that is what is happening.

We'll see.

I was right about one thing - this new J/R coverage has got the "fans" blazing mad! They're so predictable!

I googled Ojai and found that Mary Steenbergen - a friend of Naomi's - has had a place there for years. Lots of other celebs live there too.

Anonymous said...

narcissa,

Let the haters hate. You're right they are predictable.

It's getting harder and harder for them to deny what's right in front of their face. It's funny to watch them try.

Ignore them. They are nothing but jealous haters.

suvee, I am sorry you aren't feeling well! I, too am not at all crazy about the decor of the house. I hope as someone suggested, that they gut it and do a total remodeling job. Plus, they need more bathrooms. I think all these big, lovely homes need big, lovely bathrooms.Lots of them!

Anonymous said...

Not a big fan of remakes but I would love to see him a remake of the Graduate playing Benjiman of course!

I love the Us cover and story!

Anonymous said...

OK. I'll succumb. I have three movies I'd like to see remade with Jake:

Roman Holiday -with Natalie Portman

This Property is Condemned -Reese

Love With A Proper Stranger-?

I love the idea of Jake in The Philadelphia Story or Rear Window. And The Graduate would kick ass with Jake...and Susan Sarndon...

BTW: Gotta say. Those Italians really know how to pick their Vanity Fair covers...as an Italian American I am very proud of that achievement.:)

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the sympathy, bobbyanna. I'm soooo tired of coughing!

Let's see, remakes for Jake?

"Barefoot in the Park" - with Amy Adams?
(although I do think Reese would be ideal for the Jane Fonda role).

And I also like "Rear Window"..... but with what actress?

UltraViolet said...

Even though it has other incarnations, I don't think The Philadelphia Story should ever be remade. Though I can see Jake in either the Jimmy Stewart or Cary Grant roles.

Also, they'd have to update that misogynist message about the Katharine Hepburn character's being a virgin goddess or whatever that BS was.

Feel better, suvee!

UltraViolet said...

Forgot to say that IHJ now also has the s scans.

So many beautiful covers...TY so much:)

{{{suvee}}}}
Hope you're feeling better and better.

I know what you mean by relaxing in bed with a book or magazine. Nothing can beat that for me yet. I would like to try the readers, but so far they are way beyond my budget.

And do I ever love those smoldering Jake eyes. *sigh*

I hadn't seen the Time Out NY cover. HOTHOTHOT:)

Hi again,
Jake is on Conan tonight... repeat.

He's gotta know. Or at least understand how others react to him. Looking at these magazine covers, he is just too gorgeous. He just radiates "sexy." I never get tired of looking at pictures of him.

And The Graduate would kick ass with Jake...and Susan Sarndon...

3/4 years ago, I'd have completely agreed with you, always thought Jake had far more chemistry with the lovely Susan then he ever did with Ellen Pompythingy in MM and would love to see him act with her again, but I think Jake's now slightly too old for the role.

Ocean's Eleven would be okay, but he might have had to be in the dreadful Ocean's Twelve, and BTW George Clooney, I still want the couple of hours of my life I spent watching that rubbish back!

Going completely left of field, and mainly because it gives Jake the chance to play several different characters, including a woman, Kind Hearts and Coronets, or, and I'm on an old film kick at the moment, and as Jake could definatley pass as of being Irish descent, Angels with Dirty Faces, in the Jimmy Cagney role or Each Dawn I Die, again in the Jimmy role.

As to the haters getting their knickers in a twist over the J&R cover *sticks tongue out in a very adult fashion and goes back to enjoying Gyllenspoon* sod the lot of 'em!

Anonymous said...

So many magazine covers to drool over this morning, sigh.

I bought the Us magazine and read the story, love the part where Reese now refers to Atticus as her dog too!!

As for remakes, another vote for Roman Holiday with Portman from me as well!

I don't know about a remake but I would love to see Jake in a film version of 'Life on Mars' perhaps with RDJ as 'The Gene Genie'. No its not a sci-fi film but a British TV programme about a policeman who goes back in time to 1972 it was very good.

Much as I'd hate to see the original touched, John Simms and Phillip Glenister were just magnificent, if they insist on doing it, you've just sorted the 'Hollywood' casting there :D(although knowing my luck it would end up being Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller, or someone I find equally annoying :( )

How about a big film remake of Alias Smith and Jones - Jake as Hannibal Hayes (have a long standing crush on Pete Duel, plus we get Cowboy Jake again)

OT there is a film of State of Play being made so it wouldn't surprise me if they did one of Life on Mars. If anyone is interested here are a couple of clips from youtube.

LOL! When I read, a long while ago, that she'd been spotted out walking a German Shepherd all by herself, I knew things were serious. I think she is totally besotted with him. How could she not be!

Anonymous said...

Damn they look good on the cover, love it!!

I thought that they had a getaway somewhere, makes sense.

All the other covers brings back lovely memories.

I would love for Jake to do a really gritty role and for a remake, how about the Days of Wine and Roses with him playing the Jack Lemmon role and of course Reese playing the Lee Remick role.

The story is about a couple who struggle with alcholism and the effect on their marriage.

agent_krycek said...

It was a truely awful series, and not really that good a book, but if they wanted to try again and bring it to the big screen, I could so see Jake as Father Ralph de Bricassart in The Thorn Birds - really I've just got a hankering to Jake in a cassock being all angsty and tortured.

I think it needs to be a remake of a musical. My choices are below:

1. A Little Night Music. On Broadway for eons, made into a film in 1977, and promptly bombed. Jake will have to wait about 10-15 years before he undertakes this role. Synopsis: Fredrik Egerman is very happy in his marriage to a seventeen-year-old virgin, Anne. Only she's been a virgin for the whole eleven months of the marriage, and being a bit restless, Fredrik goes to see an old flame, the famous actress Desiree Armfeldt. Desiree is getting tired of her life, and is thinkin of settling down, and sets her sights on Fredrik, despite his marriage, and her own married lover Count Carl-Magnus. She gets her mother to invite the Egermans to her country estate for the weekend. But when Carl-Magnus and his wife Charlotte appear, too, things begin to get farcical (Send in the Clowns), and the night must smile for the third time before all the lovers are united.

2. Carousel. Synopsis: Fifteen years after he was killed in a bungled robbery - attempting to raise money to scrape a living for himself and his pregnant wife - Billy Bigelow is given one day to return to the living to take care of unfinished business. Attending his daughter's graduation, will he find an opportunity to make amends? The classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is lavishly transferred to the big screen, its dark, emotional themes and complex characterization combining well with memorable tunes, including If I Loved You and You'll Never Walk Alone.

3. Guys and Dolls. Synopsis: All the hot gamblers are in town, and they're all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week's incarnation of "The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York"; the only problem is, he needs $1000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, who's short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts Nathan's $1000 bet that he can't get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the music/lyrics of Frank Loesser, and you've got quite a musical. Includes the songs: Fugue for Tinhorns, "Luck Be a Lady", "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat".

That's all I can think of at the moment.

agent_krycek said...

Ooo, Guys and Dolls got me thinking, how about, as a complete departure for Jake, Stanley Kowalski in A Street Car Named Desire,

Anonymous said...

Serpico, The Pacino role of course!

Love all the cover, especially the 1st one!

I will have to get back to you guys with my remake wish, gotta think about that one.

Jake and Reese got some love in the new issue of People magazine as well this week. In the scoop section they're named the hottest couple compared to Owen and Kate and Orlando Bloom and Miranda Kerr.
The article says they spend most nights hanging out with her kids at her home and that both Jake and Reese took her kids to the pig farm. A source says "Jake is always playing with the kids and all lovey-dovey with her(Reese)"

Anonymous said...

That OUT Magazine cover has always slayed me dead.

Anonymous said...

I LOVE IT FL!!!I can see Jake as Sky Masterson, Reese or Natalie as Sister Sarah, (very straight-laced)and it absolutely has to be Zooey Deschanel, who is a really good singer, as Adelaide.

If Marlon Brando can sing and dance in a sewer in Manhattan, so can Jake! LOL! But who would be Nathan???Ewan McGregor??? I would also like to suggest High Society which was the musical version of Philadelphia Story.

Earlier I'd suggested This Property Is Condemned. Just wanted to say it's based on a Tennessee Williams short story/novela and the movie starred Robert Redford and Natalie Woods and might not be that well known. But if anyone gets a chance, they should see it. IMHO, it has a definite "Jake" vibe.

I am glad Jake and Reese have somewhere more private to hang out on weekends. It is better for the kids and really, it seems like their popularity is exploding. Every time they "win" one of these Couples Contests, I can almost hear the price of pap pictures of them going up, up, up. Good thing they both have a healthy attitude about it. But I can also understand that they are going to make every effort to disappear whenever they can.

Can you imagine how cool it will be for Jake and Reese, and the kids to go for horseback rides and picnics and cookouts and never worry about being stalked or spied on? I think Reese really felt an urgency to get the kids away from the paps. She and Ryan both say it frightens the kids.

Anonymous said...

Another contest, another Gyllenspoon victory.

It doesn't matter who they're up against, or what the question is. They always win and usually by a lot. They win in America. They win in Canada. They win in England. They're international and world famous.

I think they are far and away the most popular celebrity couple out there.

Anonymous said...

Unfortunatelly they are not as famous internationally as we assume. I travel a lot and have been living abroad for a while, and Brad and Angelina are The Famous couple, George Clooney is huge and Cameron Diaz is famous, but Jake and Reese are not internationally big. Still the most popular celebrity couple are the Beckhams in England and Brad and Angelina in the rest of the world.

Their latest film isn't helping. The numbers for Rendition aren't as good as we wished...

Rendition:
Domestic: $9,736,045
Foreign: $15,002,669

Reese and Jake did better before:

Walk the line:
Domestic: $119,519,402
Foreign: $66,919,481

Brokeback Mountain
Domestic: $83,043,761
Foreign: $95,016,500

Legally Blonde:
Domestic: $96,520,674
Foreign: $45,254,005

The day after tomorrow:
Domestic: $186,740,799
Foreign: $356,030,973

Brad and Angie have been around longer, give Jake and Reese time they will catch up!!

PS: did you see the BO for A Mighty Heart and that Jesse James flick??

Anonymous said...

oh, yeah extra. I'm planning of renting A Mighty Heart next week. I don't know if it's good or not (probably not), but The Assasination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford is one of my favorites of 2007, a friend of mine worked and contributed in a great way to this beautiful film (he's not an actor, just in case you wonder but a key crew member). BTW, this film got several well deserved awards (also Oscar nominations). The only con is that Jake is not in it.

Anonymous said...

legally blond,

They most certainly ARE famous in England.

One movie means nothing.

How many bombs in a row have Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had? Would you say that they are less famous?

People have to stop harping on Rendition. It means absolutely nothing. Political films rarely do well, no matter who stars in them. "Heavy" dramas rarely do well. A "heavy" drama about politics, well you get the picture.

Sometimes you catch lightening in a bottle with a drama, if there is a lot of buzz, but it's extremely rare for them to do huge box office. After all, Scorsese has had ONE film, in his entire career, that made more than $100 million. You can't even compare them with comedies, especially PG or PG-13 comedies.

Use Tom Cruise's film as an example. "Lions for Lambs" got worse reviews and did only marginal better box office (it also had a much larger marketing budget, stayed in theaters longer and probably lost more money, at least Rendition made a profit when DVD rentals/sales are factored in). Is Tom Cruise no longer famous? Of course he is. He doesn't even have the negative baggage abroad that he has in America. Yet it didn't matter.

Or how about Brad Pitt's Jesse James film? That even got good reviews and DID WORSE than Rendition in box office. Is Brad Pitt not famous anymore?

You see?

Reese and Jake are the biggest couple in America without a doubt, and they are definitely popular around the world as well, if coverage of them in UK, EU and Austrailian tabloids are anything to go by.

Rendition box office means absolutely nothing.

Anonymous said...

Don't know about the BO for Brothers, it seems like a small indie type film but I think it will do well as will Four Christmases IMO.

I wouldn't worry too much about their upcoming films, she is doing the voice for an upcoming animated film and he is doing Nailed which sounds like it's going to be a blast.

Outsdie of the US they may have not caught on yet but they have here.

Anonymous said...

A Mighty Heart...

You could rename that A Mighty box office disaster.

Brad Pitt even produced that one.

I understand your point though LB. Becks and Posh are popular as are Brad and Angie. But Reese and Jake are seriously catching up and have already surpassed them in America.

Anonymous said...

BTW,

There's some Oscar buzz for Jake for Brothers already, also for director Jim Sheridan. Not much for Best Picture yet.

I know it's early. But early Oscar buzz usually begins around now I guess.

I also don't think Brothers will be a huge hit. It might do well though, especially if it gets awards attention.

I definitely think Four Christmases will be a big hit. It opens on a Wednesday of Thankgiving long weekend. It stars two major movie stars and has an all-star cast. It competes against kids movies and Oscar type dramas.

I think that one is money in the bank.

Morning peeps,
Insomnia makes me loopy;) If this has been posted here, my bad, please remove it. We were discussing our preferences for Jakey's newest venture; political satire vs romantic comedy...I think:)

Nailed is a the politcal satire in this artice. YEAH!

"Nailed" holding casting calls at Dutch Square Center

quote
According to the SC Film Commission, "Nailed" is a political satire in which Sammy Joyce (Biel) - an uninsured small-town receptionist - goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the "bizarrely injured" and meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal).quote

Anonymous said...

How about a remake of Out of the Past? It was remade, Against all Odds, but I would like to see him do the remake of the original in the Robert Mitchum part.

Anonymous said...

I hope Jake gets an Oscar nod. That would be cool.

Anonymous said...

Brad Pitt is in his mid-forties and has spent 20 years pimping out his relationships. Now he pimps his kids as well. I'm sure that child psychologists would agree that what an infant orphan transplanted to a strange country needs is to be displayed in front of the paparazzi and appear on the front of every tabloid rag in the world. Not! And JLo and whatsisname selling their baby pics for $6m? Blech!

I can't believe that J&R would ever contemplate such behaviour. If that's what it takes to be "popular" - who needs it? It actually takes years of solid work to build up real popularity - such as Clooney has. He mixes crowd pleasers with serious dramas and he has won serious respect. His career offers a great template for younger actors. Well, apart from "Batman and Robin"! :D

Moving on, all the political themed films have bombed this year. Expect Stop Loss to go the same way. Quality is irrelevant: the public do not want this material at this time. Hopefully the better of these films will be seen and appreciated at the DVD/TV stage.

If Jake was as worried about his career as sometimes depicted then he would not have gone straight from Rendition to Brothers, another serious drama with a Middle East setting.

Anonymous said...

Update: Stop Loss is on target to do $4.5m this opening weekend - similar to Rendition. Disappointing for everybody concerned but not unexpected.

I must say I respect Ryan for working on classy projects with classy directors - Altman, Eastwood, Peirce.

Anonymous said...

What's with the obsession with numbers and figures and trying to prove how "famous" and "popular" Jake and Reese are? Who cares? Well, since some people apparently do, I can tell you that I live in the UK and Jake and Reese are nowhere near as famous here as Posh and Becks or Brangelina, individually or as a couple (and btw, most people here think Tom Cruise is as mad as a box of frogs)But would it really be such a great thing for J&R to become the new media darling celebrity couple? How is that going to enhance Jake's (and Reese's for that matter)reputation as an actor? I would prefer for him to be less well known or popular, but for what fame and popularity he does have to be as a result of his acting, not because of how he and Reese look cute in pics together. More often than not, credibility as an actor in is inverse proportion to media celebrity. I don't want to see Jake lose the respect and admiration he's earned for his performances for the sake of a few magazine covers and online poll "victories".

Anonymous said...

It's not an obsession idontgetit, just a little fun stuff to talk about in between films.

True they may not be as popular in the UK as B&A or the Beckhams but that should be expected since the former are brits and B&A have been around longer.

J&R IMO have the respect of the acting community, the other stuff is just fluff, comes with the territory. They both are busy withprojects and carity work it seems and their personal life, or what WE see of it seems to be going very well and they seem happy, so alls good.

Anonymous said...

I hear what you're saying, extra, but I'm not talking about respect within the acting community,or amongst the fans(in the sense of being a fan of Jake's work, which is what I consider myself to be). I'm talking about the perception from the general public. The likes of the Beckhams and Brangelina are much better known for their personal life (or fluff, as you put it) than for their professional achievements and I don't think that's a positive or healthy thing, which is why I wouldn't like to see Jake's popularity as a "celebrity" overshadow his popularity as an actor. Maybe I'm just being naive...

Anonymous said...

Why all the hate toward Brad, Narissa? How many children have you adopted? Why is it your business, how many children Brad and Angie have?

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't want Jake or Reese's success as actors to be overshadowed either.

I'm not making a value judgement, i'm just making a statement of fact. Reese and Jake are very much liked as a couple. The general public approves of them together.

That's the only point I was trying to make.

Other than that I would agree with Narcissa. Jake's new movie shows how little it bothers him that "Rendition" didn't do well at the box office. He searches for quality, not big budget type of films. I respect him for that.

He's been the "it" boy for a while now and he could have sold out years ago, but instead has chosen his projects wisely. He picks films that he believes in.

I just have a real good feeling about "Brothers." I think we may see another Oscar nomination.

Evening peeps:)
I guess the anti-Iraq film mood is still with us, because Stop-Loss has a Fresh Tomato rating of 61% and very good reviews from Peter Travers and others.
My son did say that none of his friends were planning to see another Iraq movie, even though they know it's not all about Iraq, but is a few soldier's personal stories. The movie was predicted by BO Guru, I think, to make $6,000,000 and still has one day to make it, but so far has made $1.7 million Friday.

Box Office Mojo Friday estimates

The only bankable "A' List actor left is Will Smith. He seems to bring it on home with each movie he makes. Matt Damon brings in on home with his Bourne Franchises too. I know he's happy about his recent turn of good luck, especially since he's said that he had one year, when no one called him or sent him a script.

NO more can Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt or Julia or Tom Hanks put butts in the seats.
The movie puts the butts in the seats, not the actors, and if the acting is good we rejoice...see also BBM:)

Off topic for a minute

Because my ex-hubby was adopted, and because we considered adoption before my pregnancy at 41, and because "Z" nearly died, even though she was brought to Columbia Presbyterian, and would have surely died if left in that orphanage, and because she and Brad gave 8 million dollars to various charities in 2006, and because God knows what those children's lives would have been like in Cambodia, Vietnam or Africa; I say Go Brangelina.

I think most of us, or, I should say I was shell shocked, when Jake emerged with another girlfriend last October, and was literally roasted alive on some forums and blogs.
Therefore, confirmations that there are still many people...see the US Magazine poll...who love and care for Jake as much as we do, make me really over the top happy.
That is the basis of my delight when he and Reese tops polls. I know Jake has no real interest in having the Brangelina type of worldwide popularity and I believe him when he talks about his career goals. I just love it when Jake's likeability quotient rocks, and with Reese as part of a couple, it’s still great.

I can't see Jake or Reese selling their children's pics either, when and if they have more children.
Reese is a well bred Southern Belle WASP and Jake's family comes with strong values; he knows what is and is not appropriate.
See Maggie glare at paps trying to catch a snap of Ramona...no worries.

And after saying all that, I do know that what I say means nothing:lol:lol. I have no idea what those two people will do about anything.

Anonymous said...

How about a remake of Papillon with Jake in the Dustin Hoffman role and Matt Damon in the Steve McQueen role?

Anonymous said...

Papillon is a classic. No one can touch it. Matt Damon would be terrible.

Does Ryan realize that talking about Reese all the time just makes people think about her instead of his movie?

I think if Ryan and Abbie really are an item, they should just go ahead and be one and move on. She didn't even get to go to the premiere of her movie.

In a way, I feel sorry for her. She was/is very young and who knows what he told her to convince her he wasn't really married, that it was all for sham.

Anonymous said...

Star Magazine and OK Magazine are saying Brangelina got married today in NOLA. Unconfirmed. If they could pull it off, as much as they are stalked by the paparazzi, then anyone can...

Anonymous said...

Not everyone feels so happy to see Jake and/or Reese on the cover of tat rags especially the same week as Ryan's movie came out. True or not, it feels engineered.

To appear on the cover of a mag like this one is not an indication of Jake's popularity or an appreciation of his acting skills, just as the appearance of Jennifer Aniston on the cover of National Enquirer week after week isn't an indication of her popularity.

The sooner that Jake and Reese disappear from the tabloids, supported by quotes from anonymous sources and friends, the better for everyone, including them. I would hope they agree. This is not a state of affairs to be celebrated. Do we really want them to be another Brangelina?

I never thought I would see our talented Jake on the front page of a magazine like this, without even his name mentioned. Just as an accessory. That's not good for him and it's not good for Reese.

Anonymous said...

But Reese and Jake are seriously catching up and have already surpassed them in America.

Informal internet polling on gossip websites does not equal massive popularity in the general population. Box office and selling magazine covers is much more viable. Mr and Mrs Smith, the film that Brangelina did together, was a huge hit. People were buzzing about seeing them together. The same can't be said about Rendition at all. Brangelina always sells magazine covers. How do the numbers regarding covers featuring Reese and Jake compare? But in no way do they match the world wide popularity and prestige of Brangelina. It's not even comparable.

Anonymous said...

I love Jake & Reese as much as the next, but they are not at the same level as Brangelina and others. The fact is that Reese is the big star, who everyone knows and who has played the lead as a female and brought in more than 100m, more than once. As much as I love Jake, he really is not know across the board. While he is respected for his young talent and is willingness to star in BBM, he is in now way A-list when it comes to box office or world wide recognition.

Anonymous said...

I have never been on this sight. I have one question do you people actually think what these two people did to upstage Ryan this week reall was a good thing. What do you think their peers think of this kind of nastiness. I think it is gonna make both look very bad within the movie industry. Sad stuff.

UltraViolet said...

What a surprise - a parade of anonymous comments tying to stir things up! Let's not take the bait, shall we?

I don't think the Us cover was managed or staged or in part of some kind of nefarious effort on Reese's part to upstage Ryan.

As for what Hollywood would think if it really were a PR plot of Reese's? Most would probably applaud the cleverness. Hollywood isn't exactly kindergarten.

I also, however, don't think that Reese and Jake are on the same level as Brangelina in terms of worldwide popularity. Or worldwide ennui.

Obviously, online polls are not an indicator of anything concrete. But it's interesting to note that Jake and Reese continue to win them, despite the fact that the polls aren't hyped on IHJ or on Reese sites.

Oh, and I, too, found it irritating that Jake's name is not on the cover. I don't think that looks good for Jake, but I'm not spending hors worrying about it.

Anonymous said...

I wonder what the movie industry and peers think of lying adulterers. But this is surely not as offensive as appearing on a mag cover obviously.

I think he might have found the perfect match in Abbie. Someone who is less famous and is willing to be a no show for press/red carpet events so that he can get all the attention. I could see him dumping her when she becomes too successful though.

FL said...

Oh, and I, too, found it irritating that Jake's name is not on the cover. I don't think that looks good for Jake

Au contraire, mon ami. Jake has surpassed even the one-name-only status. Yes, that's right. His Q-factor is so high that even a single picture of him, head tilted down wearing sunglasses will bring instant name recognition! Who needs stinkin' names on magazine covers anyway!

Ha - FL. Of course you are right. How silly of me!

And I don't think Hollywood minds adulterers, either, another anon. The movie biz is pretty much run by them!

On happier note, glad folks enjoyed the covers. It was fun to look back at all of Jake's.

I watched a terrible movie ladt night - The Good German. Tobey Maguire was less than impressive I hope he did better work on Brothers. The movie itself looked great but was soulless.

But it did make me want to see Jake in a good noir, period or modern.

In that case, Ryan fits right in.

Here I am again,
I have no problem with magazine covers, and I don't think Jake is the poor anonymous person whose name is not mentioned.
We know who Jake is instantly.
They are a couple in love, hence the silly magazine cover.
I don't think this cover means anything to Jake or Reese.
I may be off base here, but
the timing was weird to me too. It felt as if the magazine was trying to divert attention from Ryan's movie debut. Who knows what those weirdo’s come up with, but I agree with what you said. That was the first thing I thought about...just as I wondered about the TT gossip vermin posting all that Jake gossip just before his movie was ready to debut in October2007.
The TT expert had to know Jake had a movie coming out. I know we here at babble headquarters aren't naive enough to think this US Magazine article was just coincidence either, because magazines are planned months in advance. I don't want anyone hurt, neither Ryan nor Jake nor Reese.

As it stand Ryan’s' movie is doing as well as Rendition and some of the other war movies, which is not bad in my book. Plus, if it rents well, it will make even more more money.

And I agree witih you; Ryan should refrain from mentioning his ex when he promotes his next film, because it's true; he did make me think about her and he needs that like he needs a hole in the head.

I get the feeling some of us feel that Jake will be overpowered by the Reese machine; I hadn't given that any thought, yet. Do you think she will impede his so far stellar career? I credit him with so much talent and good common sense...well we shall see. I can't see him as Mr. Witherspoon. Gyllenspoon is not Brangelina.
My only real thoughts about them as a couple, is that she'd better treat him real GOOD, because I am a Jake fan first, foremost and forever.
Jake is a young actor just really starting to build his career; he is almost young enough to be George Clooney’s son and Brad Pitt’s younger brother. He looks up to Mat Damon and the others that hang with them.
I didn't go to see proof--Gwyneth fatigue-- and I wasn't going to see Mr.& Mrs. Smith either until the affair took over the media. Well, nosy me, I couldn't miss it then and I am glad I didn't; they have wonderful on screen chemistry.

Reese did say often during the junket that she wanted to make a movie with Jake but I think not, at least for w while.
Rendition is about torture and this horrid war. Mr. and Mrs. Smith a romantic romp. Brangelina began their affair with while filming their movie. Jake never had one scene with Reese in Rendition, but he had his eye on her since Jan 2006 and went for it ASAP when she was officially divorced.
One of my favorite movies The Thomas Crowe Affair is on TCM. There is nothing like Steve McQueen and Fay Dunaway to put the new Thomas Crowe movie to shame. NO nudity just damned fantastic acting.

I wonder what the heck Robert the wild child Downey sees in Jake, to say he is similar to Steve McQueen. I’m sure I will never know:)

HI UV,
Before I take to my bed, I totally agree with your opinion of The Good German. :)
It was so bad, I left the theater and promptly forgot I'd seen it. I can't sit in my seat, when a movie makes me bum ache more than it does already:lol:lol
Here's hoping 'Brothers' will be a good Tobey performance, like Cider House Rules or Seabiscuit or the first Spiderman.

Not at all! Actually one of the things that interests me is the influence (if any) they will have on each other's future work...... you know they must have quite a lot of respect for the other's professional opinion.

I've said it before..... I see them potentially as a new generation Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward.

I think Reese is more media savvy and more cooperative with the Hollywood publicity machinery than Jake is.

I think he'll go along with it up to a point, but she would be wise not to push him too far. He is used to strong women, and he will draw the line. That could be a suorce of conflict for them. She is all about business when it comes to her career.

Maybe the solution is for her to get pregnant and let him do more work...like Brangelina!

May I just add (sorry for the double post) that I've noticed that Reese consistently has fashion magazine covers, the Avon cause-related promotional activities, and other things going on. Her image is before us whether or not she has a movie coming out.

Jake, on the other hand, values his privacy when he is not working either making or promoting a movie.

His recent involvement with the kids who got scholarships in LA was not something he publicized.

The people who gave the event publicized those who attended the luncheon. Aside from California's First Lady, Maria Schriver, Jake was the biggest name in attendance.
We never knew until then that he'd been involved at all.

I think he is involved a quite a few things we do not hear about, whereas Reese is someone who we hear about. A lot. The US Magazine article was about her.

Jake will never be Mr. Witherspoon. That will not happen. Most people I know refer to him by his first name. He is going to be the next George Clooney. IMHO.
