Bits and pieces

There's a lot to chew on this week, as Jake Gyllenhaal does the talk show circuit to promote Prisoners. But before it's all just a distant memory, some cool/fun/goofy/glam shots of Jake from TIFF and from the movie premiere in Los Angeles.

I know he did double duty at TIFF, but how many arms does Jake have?

Jake's schedule is tight this week: he tapes The Daily Show on Tuesday; 2 morning shows on Wednesday; Katie Couric on Thursday morning — to be able to walk the Spanish red carpet Friday evening, he should take a flight Thursday night. Still, I find it hard to believe that Jake and Denis won't be there to promote "Enemy". Maybe it clashes with "Prisoners" promotional duties?

"Enemy" being scheduled for 9/20 in competition at San Sebastian, then "Prisoners" having a screening on 9/27 seemed a bit odd. I wondered: will Jake and Denis make 2 trips to Spain? Now I'm confused but still holding hope.

In my opinion Jake should promote "Prisoners" at least in UK. He has strong ties to UK and is highly respected there. Warner Bros should be aware of it.
Then again, "Nightcrawler" is in full pre-production stage.

Metro News Canada looks back at the memorable moments that defined TIFF 2013 Jake is highlighted twice: Double Features and Memorable Performances:

"Jake Gyllenhaal — If ever there was any doubt this Hollywood hunk could play with the best, his riveting turn as a tightly wound detective in “Prisoners” smashes that to pieces. If that wasn’t enough, he turns in an equally captivating performance in the experimental psychological puzzle “Enemy”."

Top picks from TIFF 2013:

Praise for Villeneuve, Hugh and Jake:
"And Jake Gyllenhaal turns in a risky but powerful performance as a relentless cop who doggedly pursues leads both false and true."

And a very interesting tweet by Matt Barone, Senior Staff Writer @ComplexPopCult:
"Prisoners" is a grade-A Hollywood thriller. Fincher-quality good. Also begins the reign of Jake Gyllenhaal. More on that later this week...

So say we all!

Playlist's Top 5 of TIFF:

They chose Prisoners and Enemy:

Enemy”
Criminally overlooked in Toronto, perhaps due to some of the cell-phone-gate issues (one of the minor dramas went down during its first press screening), Denis Villeneuve’s first collaboration with Jake Gyllenhaal is the experimental and artier cousin to “Prisoners” (which was shot only a few months afterwards). A Kafka-esque mindbender about identity, self and the conflict of the male id and ego, Gyllenhaal—like Eisenberg in “The Double”—pulls double duty as the two leads. One is an anguished University lecturer on the verge of a breakup with his gorgeous girlfriend. He soon discovers he has a doppelganger (Gyllenhaal again), who is an up-and-coming actor with a wife and baby on the way. When the two men meet, their lives become dangerously intertwined and inexorably linked. Co-starring Sarah Gadon, Mélanie Laurent and Isabella Rossellini, Villeneuve crafts the first of his arresting one-two punches for 2013 that cement his status as a bold new auteur to keep eyes on. A enigmatic and haunting look at the unconconscious, in our review from TIFF we said, “Imagine the Paul Thomas Anderson of 'There Will Be Blood' making a Brian De Palma movie, or Claire Denis directing Christopher Nolan’s 'Memento.' Hello, sold?? A24 has picked up the film presumably for a Spring 2014 release: the season of all smart indie movies of late.

Prisoners interview.

It's funny how Jake can't make the change to calling it just Enemy. I'm with you, Jake.

Great review for Jake and Hugh from Awards Watch:

I have to say that I’ve never been this hypnotized with the works of Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. Jackman, who is fresh of his inaugural nomination for Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” has capitalized in a massive way. Approaching his character with the ferocity that made him a star in the “X-Men” franchises, he hammers his way into every scene, keeping the audience guessing about their own moral complexities. He tears into scenes in a way we’ve never seen him and layers his character with plenty of affection, empathy, grief, and rage. It’s his best dramatic endeavor he’s ever done.

When it comes to Jake Gyllenhaal, many, and probably for the right reasons, gravitate towards his work in Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain” as his shining moment in film history. I believe he’s gone deeper in works like “Jarhead” and “Zodiac” but those were just the surface of what he can do as an actor. As Detective Loki, Gyllenhaal stands firm and tall in one of the year’s finest performances. Terrifically executed as a man disconnected from real emotion, he finds himself enamored by the mystery surrounding two missing girls. He also orchestrates character beats and ticks that’s reminiscent of Joaquin Phoenix’s towering work in “The Master” last year.

The guy isn't sure the movie will make it to a best Picture nod, due to its length.

Is it alarming that only 26 reviews are in with a movie coming out this Friday in over 3000 theatres? While Rush is in limited (very limited release) has way more reviews that Prisoners?

And now it's rated down on Fandango from "must go" to "go".

Very nervous about the lack of reviews on RT.

Monica said...

Rush debuted last week in Europe and in South America. I think most critics saw it long before Prisoners, so maybe thats why are more comments on this film than Prisoners.

I saw the interview with John Stewart, disliked it mainly because he spent more time talking about Batman. Jake is there to talk about Prisoners, not on batman!

Hagen said...

Denis Villeneuve and Hugh Jackman will attend the premiere of "Prisoners" in Germany on September 26th. One day later Jackman will receive an award in San Sebastián, two days later an award at the Zurich Film Festival. Apparently Jackman will promote the movie in Europe, Jake probably not.

I didn't know it will be filmed in Italy too.

Variety mentioned it in an article: Kormakur predicted that on “Everest,” “We will work on ways to digitally enhance Everest, matching it with Dolomites and Everest, but I’ll do everything physically first. If there’s no other way, then I’ll go to CGI.”

Very nervous about the lack of reviews on RT.

I don't think the number of reviews is worrisome, but "Prisoners" seems to split the critics. Yesterday Metacritic added a rave review from Rex Reed ( "New York Observer": When it comes to thrillers, this one is as good as it gets. Not for the squeamish, but for anyone who loves movies, it’s too exhilarating to miss.) But there's a considerable backlash against the initial hype, too, for example "Village Voice's" headline on "Prisoners" (Prisoners Screams, "For the Love of God, Nominate Me For Something!") After the rave reviews at the Telluride Film Festival "Prisoners" gets special scrutiny.

I'm a bit skeptic if many people will bother to watch a very dark, 150 minutes long movie. "Zodiac" didn't do well at the box office, even though critics backed the movie with very favorable reviews.

(Listening to Nanacy Grace @ 7:30 AM was a real sacrifice,Jake :( )

It was a good interview, although it was way too short. Hardly seemed worth the effort. Lara Spencer was clearly very impressed with Jake. Her eyes just sparkled. : )

They talked Prisoners, but the cutest part was Lara showing Jake a clip of the "promotional interview" he did for City Slickers. Jake was genuinely embarrassed. It was funny. He said even then he was "preparing for Brokeback Mountain" with his cowboy hat.

I went to see Prisoners last night a free screening in Boston. The movie is very dark and very intense, definitely bordering on torture porn at certain points. Lots of twists, perhaps one too many. But the audience was totally into the movie, as was I. A very good reaction, some applause.

The performances are all good. Jake is outstanding. I think his performance will surprise us a lot less than it has some critics, who don't seem to be able to remember or acknowledge the other great work he's done.

But Loki is a brand new character and Jake gets to show different facets to a character that doesn't get a lot of story told on screen.

Great chemistry with Hugh Jackman. Some very funny and tense scenes with his fellow cops.

The movie is long and unsettling. I had to watch much of it through my hands. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

Speaking of which - Hagen, I forgot to answer yesterday:

Oh, great. "End of Watch" was already violent enough for me. I hope "Nightcrawler" will be a bit less grim. Is "Enemy" particularly violent?

It's not particularly violent but there are some dramatic moments. But not a lot of gore. Prisoners is dramatic and bloody. And disturbing. Enemy is unsettling, too.

Jake might need to do a comedy!

So Jake will be in London:

Meet the Filmmakers: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and Denis Villeneuve
Join Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and director Denis Villeneuve as they discuss the gripping new thriller, Prisoners. When his six year old daughter and her friend go missing, Keller Dover (Jackman) takes matters into his own hands as Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal) pursues multiple leads and the search gets more desperate. Facing every parents nightmare, Dover goes to extreme lengths to protect his family. Come early as seating is limited. Register before arrival.

bobbyanna said...

UV, I thought Jake & Josh Horowitz were hilarious talking about Camp Walt Whitman. They always have a lot of fun together. I noticed Jake refused to say how old he was when he shared his first kiss, but he did remember her name.

Hagen said...

Did anyone watch the camp video? I can't believe no one commented on it. It's adorable!

Jake's promotion campaign for "Prisoners" is much more entertaining than his interviews for "End of Watch" last year. There's no "I went on ride-alongs for two or three times a week for five months from 4 in the afternoon until 4 in the morning." :-)

It's not particularly violent but there are some dramatic moments. But not a lot of gore. Prisoners is dramatic and bloody. And disturbing. Enemy is unsettling, too. Jake might need to do a comedy!

Thanks, UV! I'm glad to hear that "Enemy" isn't particularly gory. A comedy for a change wouldn't be bad, I think. Though I don't complain about his current choice of movies.

Speaking of "Enemy", the Spanish distributor claims that Denis Villeneuve and Sarah Gadon will attend the San Sebastián Film Festival. Jake is probably too busy. Nevertheless it's nice that he still makes it to London.

bobbyanna said...

Bit of good news. Prisoners stands a very good chance to top the box office this weekend. "Rush," the racing movie by Ron Howard, will only open in five theatres in LA & NYC. It will go wider on the 27th.
Prisoners is trending well right now, especially with "older females."... According to the LA Times. : )

Hagen said...

"Prisoners" is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes: Haunting, suspenseful, and masterfully acted, Prisoners has an emotional complexity and a sense of dread that makes for absorbing (and disturbing) viewing.

Jake Gyllenhaal Jokes He's "Incredibly Popular" and "I Impress Myself"

http://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/jake-gyllenhaal-jokes-hes-incredibly-popular-and-i-impress-myself-2013199

UltraViolet said...

Busy busy but I wanted to highlight these reviews of Jake in the movie. From the Boston Globe:

Gyllenhaal has the thankless task of being the movie’s pillar of sanity, and one of the benefits of the long running time is that we increasingly rely on Loki as he follows leads, digs up bodies, interrogates a troubled priest (Len Cariou), and chases ghostly figures through the backyards of an economically flattened middle America. We learn a little bit about Loki’s past demons, but mostly we come to trust his calm intelligence and practiced eye. As in “Zodiac” and other recent films, Gyllenhaal conveys the stressed, watchful decency of a thinking man; maybe it’s time to acknowledge he’s turning into one of the best we have.

Yes, it is time! :)

NY Times/AO Scott:

But the most tormented character may be Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), whose connection to the kidnapping is professional rather than personal. Like Keller, Loki is a familiar figure in a movie like this, and the contrast between them — the hotheaded, impulsive avenger and the cool, careful sleuth — is something we’ve seen before. Mr. Jackman is solid and persuasive, but it is Mr. Gyllenhaal, with his downturned mouth and twitchy eyes, who anchors the film. We know nothing of Loki’s off-duty life, if he even has one, but he is the sensitive, skeptical filter through which we try to imagine the fate that could have befallen two happy children playing on a November afternoon.

The Atlantic:

Jake Gyllenhaal Captivates in Overly Ambitious 'Prisoners' (headline)

A potential suspect is quickly identified — Eliza and Ralph saw their sisters playing on a beaten-up old camper that was parked a few houses down and are pretty sure someone was inside — and the action then shifts to the young, tattooed Detective Loki, played with easy authority by Jake Gyllenhaal, in one his most appealing performances in years. Unlike so many recent detectives in TV and film, Loki isn't laden with a tragic back story, some sin or mistake from the past that he's now determined to atone for. In fact we don't learn much of anything about Loki beyond his dogged commitment to the case. Gyllenhaal expertly plays Loki's cool, street-smart professional demeanor with a hint of anger pulsing under his skin, so when he does finally erupt, the moment doesn't feel overblown or unearned.

I'm sure the internet will be flooded with apologies from the people who criticized Jake for saying the gay rumors were a compliment. Since now that we've seen the show, we know James Lipton is the one who used the word.

The criticism was absurd to begin with, even moreso knowing the context.

I liked this response to one critical post:

I was there at the taping of this particular episode – I’m a huge ITAS fan, and this was one of the better interviews I’ve watched. James Lipton himself said so. I don’t think he’s bisexual, but he came across as a pretty liberal minded person and I think he just wanted to send the message that there’s nothing wrong with being gay – which is why he’s ‘flattered’. The t*** and a** comment was funny, but he had loads of intelligent and honest answers about his films. He really went into detail about his acting process, working with various actors/directors, the industry. And he was gracious to everyone who asked a question, gave well thought and long detailed answers. And, as an acting student – his answers were actually thoughtful and useful.

bobbyanna said...

UV, I wish we'd had more of the discussion about working with various actors and directors and the process. That's one of the reasons I love watching ITAS. Jake was charming, and entertaining, and I loved seeing all those old photographs. But I wanted more of the other stuff. Oh, hell. I wanted more in general. : )

I totally agree with you about the commercials. It was ridiculous.
But I loved what I did see. Yes, it was painful watching Jake deal with the BBM/Heath Ledger stuff. He was so obviously struggling.

I loved this description

In addition to the skin-crawling camera moves and the understated dread that bolsters the surface tensions of "Prisoners" there is a fascinating actor's duel going on. Mr. Jackman is all seething anger and righteous pain; his character clearly wants to be an avenging angel, as he kidnaps Alex and tries to torture the truth out of him.

Mr. Gyllenhaal's performance is different. He internalizes Loki's evident problems, which include an insubordinate contempt for his higher ups, a supreme confidence in his own investigative judgment and the kind of control over his passions that is very deliberate and fragile. Mr. Jackman may well get awards. Mr. Gyllenhaal gets our attention.
