The Watchers

The colorful and realistic secondary characters are part of the appeal of End of Watch. Making the movie was a labor of love for all involved, and cast and crew are reveling in the movie's success.

From Instagram to Twitter to Facebook, the EoW crew continue to promote the movie and to feel the love.

Jake on set "END OF WATCH" movie.. he was like Flakiss! Did you just take a picture!? I'm like yes for FB. LMAO! much fun shooting with these fools ;)

"END OF WATCH" on set!
Richard, Jake, Flakiss, and crew.. — with Ana Mata Olmos, Esme Rizzo, Art Laboe, Jo Mo, Norma Cardenas, Angela Vega, Esteban Wawis and Diane Michelle Sanchez.

Big Evil is neither:

Celluloid partners Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena pose with one-time real-life LAPD partners Jaime Fitzsimons and Daryn Dupree, who inspired the movie:

That promise and the still-strong friendship between FitzSimons and Dupree were the inspiration for director David Ayer's “End of Watch,” a film that pushes past the violence of traditional cop dramas to tell a story about the human beings behind the badges. ...

For him and Dupree, the violence and danger they faced daily forged a bond between them that has lasted a lifetime. Twenty years ago they swore to protect one another's families if one of them didn't make it home. Today, though FitzSimons moved to Colorado nearly a decade ago and Dupree remained with LAPD, the two men talk weekly and remain close friends.

The New Yorker tagged along with Jake and Fitzsimons on a visit to the NYC Police Museum, where they talked about the daily life of a cop. And how to save a celebrity:

Original questions, original answers! (Well, mostly.)

The interviewer talks to David Ayer, too.

OMG! Thanks for this UV! I had to LOL @ Big Evil who thinks Jake is "gorgeous!" Maurice Compte is brilliant.. I hardly recognized him. From Flakiss's pictures it looks like they had a lot of fun on set.

Can't wait to read the New Yorker piece on EoW about Jake and the partners. The October 1st New Yorker has a great review of "If There Is..." and they quote Terry a lot. The review is all positive, They love the playwright, they love Annie Brian and Michelle, and they say Jake is "Superb."

Can't wait to read the New Yorker about EOW and the review of the play, I saw it this weekend and will post my review later :)

Looks like Jake and Co had a blast on the set!

UltraViolet said...

Yay, chica! I still haven't done my full review. There's too much going on. I plan to do a play recap post tomorrow, probably. But please post your review any time.

And belated happy birthday :) (I think the play was a birthday treat, yes?)

Bobbyanna, I loved the Big Evil interview. He looks totally different. I think he threw the reporter for a loop with his Jake commentary :)

I edited the post to add screen shots of the New Yorker article. They should be easier to read.

Jake Gyllenhaal just walked past me and it took every ounce of my self-control not to hum that Taylor Swift song just to see if he'd open up

EoW grossed $7,812,077 on its second weekend (-40,6 percent), a bit less than Open Road estimated, but still a very respectable hold.

Ha, ha, that was brilliant UV!! How awesome it is that EOW is doing so well AND Jake is ion of the producers!!

Looking forward to your review Chica !

Seth Mcfarlane hosting the Oscars? Oh well I will not think about it, I will not watch if the Academy does what I think it will do, ignore substance and talent for everything else.

Sometimes I think critics and the public are talked into believing a movie is better than what it really is.

Like UV, I will not think the Oscars or in my case hold my breath for EOW chances.

Hagen said...

I think Michael Peña has a decent shot at an award, partly because Hispanics have been neglected in the movie industry. Maybe the academy would like to send a message to Hispanics that they're not overlooked anymore.

"Won't Back Down" (actual gross: $2,603,370) will be #1 on Boxofficemojo's hitlist for worst saturated openings (opening at 2,500+ theaters). Maggie must feel awful.

UltraViolet said...

Just listened to a bit of a Jeff Wells podcast about the Oscars. He's such an ass. But that's irrelevant to the bigger point, which is that both he and the other prognosticator seemed to dismiss EoW's status as an awards contender. Jake's name didn't even come up in the Best Actor discussion. They didn't mention any specific Supporting Actor names.

Would still love to see it nab a SAG nomination. Especially because, as someone said to me, the second-tier actors are showing such love for the movie. It's remarkable to see. Not even sure if they'd be a part of an ensemble nomination - don't know how far down those go. But they would be in spirit, certainly.

The bid is rising in the auction to have a backstage photo taken with Jake.

I love when actors try and grow facial hair to blend in/cause i definitely just waved at jake gyllenhaal getting off the subway. he thought he was slick with the grizzly man look/I'm so pissed at myself that I didn't jump out of the car and get a picture.

From an interview with Stephen Gyllenhaal:

Which of your movie sets did you bring your kids to?

Oh, I brought them to all the sets. They came to every set all the time. I didn’t let them see a lot of the movies. In fact, I don’t think they’ve seen all the movies from when they were little. Maybe more recently, because they were grown up movies, but any sets, they came to all the sets, they grew up on sets.

Was there any doubt they would go into the business?

Oh, I never thought for a second they would. It was never anything I thought of. We just didn’t think about that. They were kids. They were doing whatever they were doing. I didn’t understand that they were absorbing everything that was going on and it’s amazing to see how much they took in, but there was never any idea that they should do anything but what they wanted to do. Never for a moment. There wasn’t really even time to consider, “Well, are you going to become a doctor?” because they were so young when they started acting and then it just took off.

Have you seen End of Watch yet?

Oh yeah, I saw it. I’m actually in New York right now. I just saw Jake’s play as well. Yeah, I saw End of Watch. It’s terrific and he’s great in this play. I don't know how it happened but my kids are very talented.

As a father of grown-up children, when they’re so successful that they make so many movies, do you still see every one and take pride in it?

Oh yeah, absolutely. Oh yeah.

The bidding is amongst 5-7 people, JPershing means business though.

I'm back with my review for If There Is I.....

Jake was a surprise and incredible in his role as the troubled brother/Uncle Terry. The performance was sad, touching, loud, and I could understand his profanity laced tirades with his on target accent even though a few people around me said they had a hard time understanding him.

Annie shined as the niece/daughter. There is one scene that is shocking and upsetting and she pulled it off perfectly.

Gomez and O'Bryan were fine but they weren't really given much to work with IMO.

Overall I liked the performances more than the play. I found the use of water and the cast moving around the furniture distracting and gimmicky. I know that it was used to move the narrative of the play but as I said I found it distracting.

The audience gave the cast a nice long applause at the end. A large crowd was waiting for him after. I was tempted to hang around but my BF whisked me off for my B'day dinner!

BTW, he liked the play a lotl better than I did!

I hope Jake decides to do another play because he is so good on stage. I just hope he choses a better project next time.

bobbyanna said...

Thanks for the review, Chica!
While I liked the play, I can understand your reaction. I was very surprised that my daughter, who came to it grudgingly, "for Mom" ended up really liking it and being very impressed with the staging and the acting. I definitely hope this is just the beginning of Jake doing more stage work...in addition to a lot more movies. : )

Thanks for your review Chica glad you got to see the play sure wish I was able to.

Next up is EoW's UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11th.

On the same day the movie will open in Greece and Hungary, one day later in Iceland (probably on one screen).

Not much love from Russia: EoW's box office dropped by 59 percent in its second weekend.

Hagen said...

Fortunately Jake doesn't appear on the "Mobster: A Call for the New Order" IMDb.com site anymore.

The production of "Prisoners" is set to begin in January (locations: Derby, Connecticut and Philadelphia).

Monday's top movies: 1. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA - $1.8M ($44M) 2. LOOPER - $1.7M ($22M) 3. END OF WATCH - $700k ($26M)

I don't see End of Watch receiving Oscar nominations, but It would be nice to see jake at roundtable on The Hollywood Reporter.

Scott, they just changed the presenter and trying to attract the younger crowd is what they have been doing for years, but I don't think it will change who will be the winners.

Scott said...

Is it wrong to hope that Jake will be the prisoner and not the FBI agent, he has done the government thing before. Rendition, EOW kind of.

That would be a great showcase for him and Hugh. I still say that Jake's big doe eyes would be wonderful as a serial killer, he's proved it.

Yay. No link but from Variety:

What Did I say; Gyllenhaal officially closes deal to star opposite Hugh Jackman in PRISONERS

Mary said...

Good news!! And according to Hagen
starts filming in Janurary.

Mary said...

And IMDB already has it listed as in pre production.

UltraViolet said...

Apparently Hugh Jackman's character is from Boston. I think they should film here!

Thought this was a cool comment:

just saw the film END OF WATCH for the second time and loved it even more. A masterpiece in the cop movie genre. Beware -- it's salty and very harsh in places. But there is such beauty in the brotherhood that Mr. Pena and Mr. Gyllenhaal find in their police partner characters. Phenomenal acting from both. I went again, in part, because I just wanted to hang out with their characters again. This is inspiring, fascinating filmcraft that takes us the heart of one of our noblest vocations... in all the complexity, fear, idealism, excitement, and mundane-ness... with a terrifying and moving finish. Highly recommended. I went the second time with a local police officer who loved it, as well.

I love the idea that Taylor and Zavala are guys you just want to hang out with.

Monica said...

This is great news! thanks!

bobbyanna said...

What wonderful news about Prisoners! Yaaay! (Make them come to Boston, UV!)

EoW really does have something very special. I love that idea: hanging out with Taylor & Zavala. I felt the same way the second time I saw it. Even now, I'm thinking of going again, for that very reason. It has that kind of power. (Maybe WME & Open Road will do some campaigning. Their work deserves recognition.)

That movie created such an authentic sense of place and characters, they feel very real. I guess in a way they are, bcz there are lots of Taylors & Zavalas out there. : )

Monica said...

forgot to mention that I'm happy that Jake will work with Melissa Leo. She's always great!

Scott said...

Too bad Jake passed on Now You See It with Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine. I think Mark Ruffalo got the part Jake was in line for. It looks interesting, but Eisenberg and Laurent are the main characters it seems. Might be a sleeper hit in Jan 2013 as I don't see Sir Michael or King Morgan working in rubbish films.

UltraViolet said...

Yeah, and that one did film in Boston! I'm not sure that will be such a great movie, but Jake was going to be a cop in that one, too.

Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman have both made a lot of bad movies. So that's no guarantee of quality.

Deleted the story link because it's now a pay-to-see article. But here was the gist:

Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson will produce along with 8:38 Productions’ Kira Davis and Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner. Ed McDonnell and John Stark will serve as executive producers.

Production is scheduled to begin in early 2013. Alcon is targeting an autumn 2013 release through its output deal with Warner Bros.

They also say Jake's about to make his American stage debut. Let's hope that's the only inaccuracy!

It's up on Deadline, too.
