U3

IHJ posted some photos of Jake Gyllenhaal at a restaurant with Bono and The Edge last year. The expressions are priceless.

Edge: "Who is this guy?"

Jake: "I don't know if I believe that..."

"Really, Bono? Really?"

"Okay, tell me more."

"Don't make me spit out my wine!"

"I love you."

"Next!"

You can Jake and Anne's arrival and some snippets from their press conference:

And here's an old interview with Jake and Anne from Today Australia. The first part seems familiar, but the "movie star" stuff seems new. But who can remember all of them at this point!

You can watch more of their arrival and a good chunk of the press conference here.

Further down memory lane, here's Jake on Conan, talking about Bono singing "Send in the Clowns:"

Points for "literally," suvee, but demerits for assuming that most of us wouldn't see the value in Jake doing the unexpected. I think a lot of us have talked about that very thing. It's clear Jake's career needs a shot of adrenaline.

I would prefer him to do a TV thing with the knowledge that he has movie gigs, too, however. Because I want Jake to be in movies. Big, epic movies and small, indie character pieces and raucous comedies and sexy romances.

I'd love to see him mix it up like Matt Damon does, but Matt has his choice of roles, and Jake sadly does not.

Sass, good luck on your Jake hunt! He helps the woman with the cab, so I'm sure he'd help you!

Jake already did some TV work. I loved him on SNL and he can certainly do guest shots on some of the high rated shows

I think that at times we are too much impatient, I have trust in the talent of Jake, I can wait to see him in something of really great, because he deserves it, every job has some up and down, but when there is the talent, sooner or later, the things happen. Also James Franco has had some periods in which it collected failures, and he is almost disappeared, but with the patience and the right choices, he has returned in top. Jake is really too, too much good for the TV, even if today it is of good quality :)

I hope Jake is open to doing TV, I think that it would give him more opportunities to show his diversity.

Look at come of the actors that are doing or have done TV/Cable shows and movies like Kate Winslet, Laura Dern, Glenn Close, Al Pacino, etc.

I love whrn Jake is in NY!!!

That wasn't at all what I meant, UV. When I said mine was a minority opinion, I was only referring to the belief that television, specifically, might be a good option for him. I just assumed that most Jake fans would believe he is too good for tv. Maybe I'm wrong.

IMO no actor is too good for TV Suvee, including Jake. I agree with you 100%.

I listed just a few actors that have done TV/cable TV shows/guest spots and movies. I would like to add Sissy Spacek, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Laura Linley, Holly Hunter, James Franco and Jeffrey Irons to that list. Also Kevin Spacey is working with David Fincher on a TV series for Netflix.

I would hope that most of Jake fans are open to Jake to doing more challenging things and that would include doing TV.

Kudos for Denby for losting Source Code on his ten best list!

I agree with suvee & chica, in that I don't think Jake's "too good" for TV. But I think many actors you've cited are pretty established in their careers, and they mix it back and forth without any "blowback."

The prospect of Jake working more doing quality work, should include TV. Unfortuantely, I think the industry itself stigmatizes actors as being on a downward slope if they accept TV work, depending on the timing and the project. Working with Todd Haynes for Mildred Pierce worked for Kate W.

Brits have no problem with TV because they go back and forth all the time with BBC productions, stage work, films etc. I wish our film industry and "image" people had a healthier attitude towards TV, but I still feel there's a stigma which a lot of these actors have worked hard to dispel.

If Jake finds a project like Mildred Pierce,or Grey Gardens, which won Drew Barrymore a lot of respect for her performance, I'd be very excited. Interesting, that Stanley Tucci did an arc on a TV series after Prada.

But on the opposite end,Ryan Phillippe's career is stalled and he just signed up for a TV series. Perception is everything, so I say yes to HBO, and hell no to Dancing with the stars! LOL!

(I'm enjoying this discussion! : ))
Apologies for long-windedness. I need to learn succinctness.: /

Exactly! You said it better than me, Chica!

No, not television. This seems like a nightmare for me.

all the actors that you have quoted are in a point of their careers in which they don't have anything to show, and they can afford, also for their age, to participate in television show without diminishing or to increase their image or career and all them are 15 20 older of Jake. For an actor from the potentialities of Jake, that he should be a A-list. , of his age, with the films that it has under the belt and the prizes that he has won, the tv would be a second choice. We try not to be hypocritical is in this way, for an actor of Cinema, the tv or it is a beginning or it is an end of career. PS I apologize for my English

I don't think that considering doing TV a set back but a chance to flex his acting chops that's all.

This is all speculation and we have no idea what Jake's plans are but I would support Jake no matter what he decides to do.

Jake has to show its talent making movies, just choosing better them ;)

I don't know if Jake is open to Cable/TV but so may talented actors are doing it and doing it well. I have no problem with it at all.

Patrick Wilson, another of my favorite actors, is starring in a series, "A Gifted Man" and premiered his movie, Young Adult, opposite Charlize Theron and directed by Jason Reitman, December 8, 2011.

Matt Damon's career was nearly over after he starred in "All the Pretty Horses." I went to see it because of GWH but didn't like it.
,
Now, after 2 Bourne movies he's on top and named by a finance magazine (Forbes arr) as Hollywood's most bankable actor and was a People Magazine most sexy male actor.

So many actors have dry spells, but if the talent is there, and they have good management teams and PR teams, they can turn that around and go on to make fantastic put the butts in the seats and Indie movies close to their heart.

Jake's movie, POP, which made buckets of money overseas, but not to much here, could have been such a vehicle,, and could have done for him, what The "Bourne movies" did for Matt Damon and what the Disney movies did for Johnny Depp, another actor who had dry spells.

I believe POP was pitched to the wrong audience, PG-13, and should have courted the PG audience. Swords and jumping off building appeals to pre-teen and early teenaged male, or at least they did to my son. That's what I don't like about Jake's team. I would like more input from more knowledgeable people who know audiences, or more hands on from someone.

There were no young males in the audience when I went to see it, just a few other Seniors and older teens. A popular video game movie, marketed to the PG audience would have made it a big hit. My son agrees. :lol :lol

Thank you UV for this blog, where we can discuss Jake's career, openly and honestly with no evidence of trolls...or NET:)

I'm not succinct in this area either, but then the subject is Jake. I've been concerned about his career since Zodiac and here, on GyllenBabble, I can TALK about it. YAY :)

IMO Jake has a talent that allows him in every moment, with the right film to win the oscar, in my country both, Pop and LAOD has been hits, I don't know really what there is of different in America

I dont have a problem with Jake doing TV as long as its agood one which cna shwo his diversity

Monica said...

If he does TV, he returns to the screen in supporting roles.

I agree with anon, most of these actors cited as Kate did everything in the movies. According to some, Kate went to the tv because of the Grammy. No wonder, she is still in the cinema with Carnage and still getting great job offers.

For me Jake would owe, to abandon, for now, big productions, spectacular budget or special effects and to focus himself on his recitation and on the histories to interpret, to show who is and of what he is able, to put in line great interpretations in independent film or not of big budget and to aim to the oscar

UltraViolet said...

That's definitely a risk, Monica. Jake has to tread very carefully. Some people argue that he's not a leading man already, but I disagree. Jake needs to prove that again.

Exactly, UV. I also read several people saying that Jake will never be a star or an actor leader and that the best way is he will go to the TV. I disagree with that. Jake has already shown he has talent and he can carry a film.

Jake should have stayed in indie films after that Oscar nomination.

Monica, people said the same of Jhonny Depp.

You are here! first time I see a second page in the comments of GB.
Jake? TV? Never
He belongs to the big screen, the premieres
Who had that idea? I'm sure it never occurred to jake and not going to pass, he's just waiting for the right movie.

Daniela said...

This idea was a joke, seriously! kkkkkkkk

I'm laughing more than the joke about Portuguese

Monica said...

lol Dani. It's not a joke, some people put their arguments, but it is something I do not agree.

Daniela said...

Sorry, but this argument to me gets to be funny, Jake still has many actors want to play opposite the directors who have never worked

Daniela said...

I have the same opinion that Monica, UV, is not the time to take a chance on TV but I did not express myself well, sorry if it seemed mockery to those who had this idea

The debate on Jake possibly doing TV is fascinating. I always thoiught that it wouldn't hurt him if he did a guess stint on a show like mad men for instance as already suggested.

Jake does have leading man credentials and can carry a film but there are some shows on TV and cable that are more interesting than some of the stuff that HW is churning out.

Keep the tweets coming, I love following Jake through NY via the twets and FB!

Anonymous said...

Jake should choose better the roles, not to go to waste his talent in some television show even if of good quality.
He should face difficult and unusual characters, as for instance the role of the Bad one, or of the crazy person. or something that shows his qualities of singer and musician.

@tweetan87 enjoy!!! P.S. We saw Jake Gyllenhaal with her sister Maggie's daughter having dim sum in New York yesterday!!!

I would have to say I'm in the Jake doing TV camp. Not a TV series but guest spots or TV movies. I just don't see anything wrong with it.

I bet he's taking his time going over scripts and deciding on his next move.

I love the tweets. Oh to be in NY right now, sigh. figures he'd decide to live in NY where I used to live (at least right now) and I'm a couple of states south :(

Just want to say I love to read your opinions on whether Jake should or shouldn't do tv, this is the way intelligent people discuss things, so kudos to us all:)

I dont think is the right time for Jake to do tv, maybe in the future when his career is consolidated and with a Oscar on his beautiful hands.
I agree with Lily, Jake was at his best when he did that sketch of dream girls on SNL

Thanks, Paula. It is an interesting topic, one Jake could be weighing himself. People should always fee; comfortable discussing Jake's career woes and wins. I think we all want the best for him. If only we controlled the studios!
