Cannes Revisited

Updated - scroll down for some pics of Jake from the weekend. Thanks to Stephanie/IHJ, as always.

The 2009 Cannes Film Festival just concluded, awarding the Palme d'Or to The White Ribbon. And Heath's last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, had its first public screening, one that will hopefully lead to a distribution deal.

This all led us to think back to the 2007 festival and Jake Gyllenhaal's Cannes debut. The official Cannes site has archives of past years, and naturally, we had to check out the 2007 archives, which yielded a few Zodiac hidden gems. There are four videos of interest: the press conference, the photocall, the red carpet, and a highlight reel.

The photocall has a short snippet of an interview done with the main players in some kind of cabana-like room. I've never seen this footage. Not a lot of Jake but it's fun to see something new/old:

The highlight reel is notable for a few seconds from the cabana:

And also for the only shots I've ever seen of Jake, et al., inside the theater after the screening. I think Jake enjoys taking his bows:

I captured the end of the video, but not well. Definitely worth clicking on the links yourself - it's always great to see Jake beaming like this. It's a shame Zodiac wasn't more enthusiastically received by U.S. movie audiences - or the Academy!

Hope you enjoy your holiday trip down le chemin de la mémoire!

This didn't really fit in the post, but I found a Chloe Sevigny Zodiac interview where she talks about Jake a bit. I She describes him as prepared and always ready to work. Take that, Ruffalo!

I wish we'd gotten more of Robert and Melanie. It would be nice if Fincher gave us some more deleted scenes at some point.

And I didn't read many interviews where she and Jake talked about the other. Would like to have heard more.

Thanks for finding all these Zodiac goodies UV!

Zodiac was not handled right by the studio back in 2007 which is a shame because it's an excellent film. Jake, RDJ and Mark were all outstanding and I was pissed off that it was forgotten by the Academy by the end of the year.

I wish too that Fincher had added some more deleted scenes too.

Love what Chloe said about Jake!

Thanks for these gems, UV. I enjoyed Chloe's interview comments. Especially when she mentioned Jake speaking up for his character when he felt he should. I like that about him, that he wants a collaborative relationship with his director.

Sorry to spam, but I just saw this item on justjared, and thought people might be interested. This was the play Jake was allegedly looking at, and then there was talk about Jake or Leo DiCaprio doing the movie version a while ago? (Hope I have it right.)

"Chris Pine, Sunday (May 24) in Santa Monica, Calif.

Next month, the 28-year-old Star Trek stud will be hitting the stage in Beau Willimon’s new play, Farragut North, directed by Doug Hughes. Chris will take on the role of Stephen, a young press secretary working for a fast-rising candidate.

Previews for the play start on Tuesday, June 16. Tickets ($45 to $74) are on sale now at the Geffen Playhouse box office, online at GeffenPlayhouse.com."

Thanks UV, Bobbyanna, Josie and Sheba baby for all your comeents in the previous post about my niece and her husband. I spoke to them earlier and he is settling in to civilian life and she and the kids are just thrilled.

What great finds UV, I especially love the interview with Chloe. It's good to hear that Jake stood his ground. Fincher is a difficult director as we all know but the outcome was well worth it.

Interesting that the play is now going to debut in L.A. instead of NY, I would have loved to see Jake on stage.

UltraViolet said...

I really wish we'd seen Jake in the play, too! But it did show in NYC, with John Gallagher playing the lead. I found this tidbit a while ago - I thought it was funny. From when the news about Jake's reading for the play first surfaced. Howard Dean is a Gyllenhaalic :)

Last week, Oscar-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal did a private reading of "Farragut North" (written by playwright and former Dean campaigner Beau Willimon) about the presidential hopes of a charismatic, unorthodox candidate and his staff. The 26-year-old "Brokeback Mountain" star would play the idealistic young communications director sabotaged by old political dogs with dirty tricks, reports the New York Post. If he's cast, it would be Gyllenhaal's Broadway debut.

Jake was a big campaign supporter of mine, so I hope he takes it," Dean told us yesterday. "But I want him to play me." The DNC chairman likes the concept -- "Hell, I'll go to it" -- even if it includes his famous scream. "I'd like to see him do that."

Looks like Jake and Reese partied with RDJ and Tom Hanks today.

Also, I had no idea Jake supported Dean.

I do think Jake likes a collaborative effort - someday, I hope we hear the real story, or at least Jake's unvarnished version, of what he really thought and felt working for Fincher and how they moved past it, as they seem to have done.

Good night, babblers.
UV, I love all videos, especially with Chloe.
She's one of my favorite actresses and she did a great job in Zodiac.
The scene of restaurant is one of my favorite romantic scenes. Impossible not to fall in love with shy Robert Graysmith(or Jake?).

UltraViolet said...

Monica, I adore the blind date scene in Zodiac, too. So sweet and irresistible.

Glad you enjoyed the videos :)

Stephanie posted some pics of Jake in Ojai - put up a couple. More at The Source, of course.

Oh snap! I just watched Zodiac over the weekend. It is a fantastic film and Jake really shines.

Cheers for the good luck, Sheba and UV. I'm off to do my French film exam now =]

Zodiac is one of my favorite films, very underrated and a great ensemble cast! You are great at finding all these tidbits, UV, thanks. Dr. Parnassus recieved mixed reviews at Cannes but I'm anxious to see it.

Looks like Jake and Reese was hanging out with RDJ yesterday, along with Hanks! Hope they enjoyed themselves.

I adore Chloe, thanks for the interview.

Jake did most if not all of the PR for Zodiac so we didn't get to see Chloe, Mark or Robert talk about the film so it's great that you found these little snippets UV.

Jake and Fincher bumped heads during filming but they seemed to have mended their differences.

Hope J&R had fun at the Memorial day party, great to see them with Robert again.

It looks like the paps has caught Jake 2 Sundays in a row in Ojai and he is not amused and I can't blame him. I think now that Jake, Reese and the kids are becoming regulars there, they are becoming creatures of habit and frequent the same places on the weekend.

bobbyanna said...

I think I did a "UV." :) (Investigative skills)

So I'm gonna go out on a limb (not a "UV") and say Reese and Jake were at Jole Silver's house in Malibu and he is one of the producers for Sherlock Holmes, RDJr.'s movie with Guy Ritchie.

According to imdb, Joel has a humongous, seriously huge list of movies in development or announced, but not necessarily cast. I am so glad Jake and Reese were there. I bet Robert encouraged it.

bobbyanna said...

Oops. I mean JOEL Silver.

Thanks for finding the "lost" Cannes footage and the interviews UV. Zodiac got lost around awards time in 2007 which was a pity, one of the best fims of the year.

Good detective work Bobbyanna, let's hope they did some schmoozing as well as partying yesterday!

FL said...

I think that's a very good limb to be out on, Bobbyanna. ;-)

Here's another fun fact: Joel Silver is one of Reese's neighbors in her Brentwood Park community; living the next road over. In a very large, very pink, house.

bobbyanna said...

Thanks, FL. (blushes.) You and UV are about the best internet investigators (II's) I've ever seen.:)

Lainey also has the information about the Memorial Day Party at Joel Silver's.

UltraViolet said...

Ah,. but did Lainey know it was Joel Silver's house before Bobbyanna posted :)

Good detective work, Bobbyanna. It's fun when you break something, isn't it?

Thanks for the links and the fond memories of Cannes.

I hope we see him there again one year.

I'm not happy that Jake is getting papped in Ojai, much as i love to see pictures of him put and about.

i agree that Zodiac was badly underrated. A shame.

bobbyanna said...

It was great fun to "break the story," UV! I could have embellished, and said Jennifer Aniston was there, too,(Courtney Cox and David Arquette live just a few yards down the beach,)so was Guy Ritchie. But I thought some enterprising gossip blogger with "inside sources" (Google) would discover it all by themselves. :)

LG, I will go out on another limb and "predict" Jake will be in Cannes next year for a HUGE rollout for Prince of Persia. I am saving my money and dieting for it...:) (I still hold out hope for "Brothers in Toronto..based on nothing at all.)

Love the trip down memory lane with Jake in Cannes in 2007! I agree also that Zodiac was underrated, despite the excellent reviews, it was all but forgotten by the end of the year.

I'm surprised to hear that Jake supported Dean too, that's because we all saw him stump for Kerry in '04 but that was after the Democratic covention.

If I remember, Jake's Mom supported Kerry and his Father supported Dean.

Great detecive work bobbyanna! Sounds like it was quite the party. Not liking the paps in Ojai yet again.

Was just looking for Zodiac reviews and there's a Top 10 movies by reviews for 2007..and it Was in the top 10. That was one of the amazing things about it. It was on so many Best Movies of the year List - yet not a nomination from the Academy.
I know there were reviews that said it was The Best Movie of the year and many in the Top 5.

It would be hard to believe Jake does not have a movie lined up to film sometime this year or early next year.
But we do know he will be doing Interviews for magazines & TV. toward the end of the year.
And then starting to gear up & be ready for next summer.

What a great post, I locved Zodiac and was dissapointed too that it fell off the radar towards the end of the year.

Jake looked so dashing at Cannes two years ago, can't wait until he starts promoting Pop. I have no idea what's going on with Brothers and Nailed, so we msy have to wait until 2010.

Love that J&R are friends with RDJ and his wife, sounds like the party may have been a little business and fun!

Jake looks like a suburban husband shopping but instead of using the list his wife gave him, he picked out his own veggies! looks like they had company over the weekend by the amount vegs in bags/basket.

Don't like the fact that he was papped two Sunday's in a row in Ojai.

So many celebrities now living in the are defeats the whole idea of Ojai being safe. It certainly does seems rather stalkerish, though.
Wonder if they have problems with a particular group of paparazzi.

Wonder if they have problems with a particular group of paparazzi./
/

I'd say the answer to that would be a resounding YES! Check out their own text under the pics. Splash is more or less admitting they're stalking them.

Anonymous said...

Anon 9:39 here. I was thinking specifically about those two or three men who were harrassing Jake, and cackling so loudly in that alley way, maybe a couple of weeks ago or more? They seemed unbalanced and scarey. Agressive, too.

I thought with Splash, X17, etc., they buy photos from people. Do they also have people who work directly for them? Splash bought that video footage of Heath in the hotel suite, accusing him of using drugs. They are despicable. There's a certain class of paparazzi that stalks and harrasses and lies. They try to provoke trouble. I think they are dangerous.

Nice to see that Jake and Reese had a nice Memorial day with RDJ and Tom Hanks...cool.

I wish the paps didn't hound them though. I love seeing pictures of them but I don't want them harassed or anything..

Anyway, they both look very cute. :)

Meant to add that it is interesting that they were at Joel Silver's. I can't wait to see Jake back on the big screen. It's been long enough, dammit! ;p

UltraViolet said...

The Splash comment was disturbing. People wonder why Jake didn't look thrilled or why he and Reese separated. Who wouldn't want to keep them from getting their photo?

New post.
