Friends

Ever wonder what Jake Gyllenhaal was doing hanging around Austin, Texas last April?

Photobucket

Seems he was catching the new play, Wireless-less by friend David Modigliani, and checking up on his investment.*

Next month starts the week-long South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, being held as it is every year since 1944 in Austin, Texas.

According to Robert Wilonsky of the Dallas Observer, among the films most likely to be jam-packed at next month's South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival in Austin: David Modigliani's doc Crawford, which purports to answer the question: "What happens to the 705 residents of Crawford, Texas, when George W. Bush moves to town?" The trailer, posted yesterday, should give you some idea.

Also, this is no small-time affair: Sitting on the moviemakers' "advisory board" are such folks as Jake Gyllenhaal, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen and director Brad Silberling.

Could this Jake's first foray into film producing? According to the film's official site:

*Join Jake Gyllenhaal, Ted Danson and a committed group of patrons and investors who are funding Crawford's push to completion.

The film's advisory board's Martha's Vineyard connection is no fluke. Nor is this David Modigliani's first documentary. In 2006 David produced a tribute piece to the Chilmark (MA) Community Center. According to the Martha's Vineyard Times David Modigliani, started at the Center as a camper as a three-year-old, became a counselor when he was 11, and stayed at it until he was 18 - a typical track for many Center kids. Modigliani wrote poetry as an undergraduate at Harvard, but now he is focusing on playwriting and screenwriting as part of a three-year fellowship at the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. How fitting that his first completed film was a 30-minute tribute to the Chilmark Community Center, called "Barefoot at Beetlebung: The Center Through Fifty."

To capture the Center's essence, Modigliani interviewed dozens of people who have been directly connected to it - campers, parents, directors, board members, teachers, neighbors, and friends. They all spoke with open affection for the Center. Some saw the organized chaos of mornings at the center as an invitation to experiment, which helped them develop self-reliance. Others praised the ease with which people mixed at the Center - people from different backgrounds, different generations, different everything.

While the Chilmark Community Center has been around 50 years, some of us only recently became aware of it this past summer.

The Chilmark Community Center is a vital part of local life. Profits from the annual Chilmark Road Race go to support the Center.

Quick note on one of Jake's acting jobs: IGN has a DVD review for Rendition. Not a lot of info - no real details on the deleted scenes, just that there are five of them.

Just in from voting and I get to post first.:lol...people who post this on various blogs and forums are rubbing off on me...*forgive*

As usual you both have found new and exciting Jake news. So, Jake is involved in producing now. It doesn't hurt that the subject is our lame-duck president. I never thought of the town of Crawford, TX, being a temporary residence for #43, therefore,
I'm totally anxious to see this film now.

I attended the SXSW festival in Austin, TX when I lived in San Antonio, TX. It's a Very exciting place to be, great fun, hearty TX food, and excellent music.
The live band capitol of America is the only place to be when SXSW is on.
Thanks again for letting us in on Jake's participation in his friends film. He has so many irons in the fire, it's hard to keep up with all his projects. I am glad to have this blog to help us out:)

I wish I could see BBM again on the big screen. Maybe it will happen here...iwish ihope. I'm glad you saw it again with friends and fans.

The documentary sounds interesting and I'm glad to hear Jake's involvement with it, i would love to see it.

I never attened the SXSW but I heard that it's one of the best film festivals.

If I remember corectly, Jake has his own poduction Co. called Nine Stories.

FL, what a wonderful post today...... you ladies are the best, bar none!

"Crawford" looks like a doc I will definitely want to see (for so many reasons). Jake is a man of many interests and passions.... I kinda like that about him! Thanks for showing us this side of him, and yes, I really did wonder about that pic of him and Chris in Austin last year. Now I know, they were supporting an old MV friend.

"Almost like a craving."

Lawgoddess, I know exactly what you mean...... and my addiction needs to be fed soon with some new pics! All I can say is, that beard better be gone just as soon as "Brothers" is done filming. : )

Back to watching Super Tuesday returns...

Oh thank you for the info ladies! Crawford looks very interesting. I love docs like this. Like Chica, I hope it gets distribution and is on theatres. Way to go Jake for being behind the scenes on films like that.

Happily voted today. Was a close decision but Hillary got my vote.

UV and FL your post about seeing BBM again was lovely and so touching.

Hillary has been declared Democratic winner in Massachusetts. No small feat that, since our governor, Deval Patrick and two senior senators, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry, came out in support of Barry O.

*FL happy with the outcome*

Great post, but am I the only one who can't see any pictures? B.

Anonymous said...

FL this was a GREAT post. Lots of interesting information. Amazing how you connect the dots !( Jake's visit to Austin)LOL! Really happy to know Jake is branching out! But like LGBarb I can't see the pictures either!!!! Crawford sounds very interesting.

I remain fascinated at these "overlapping relationships" and how they seem to facilitate Jake's involvement in such a range of projects.

I have to say that since the last debate, when the two candidates "played nice" with each other, I will be very proud no matter which one gets the nomination! I will continue to support Senator Obama, who is holding his own right now, but I am also very excited at the possibility of Hillary getting the nomination. When she gets into discussing issues, and policy, etc. she is really effective! I also cannot ignore my mother! LOL!!
It is just a delight for me to watch this 90 year old woman feeling so optimistic and so passionate about the prospect of a woman as President of the United States.

Heath's report

Medical Examiner: Ledger Died From Prescription Drug Overdose

February 06, 2008

The city medical examiner has concluded that the death of actor Heath Ledger was "accidental," the result of an abuse of prescription pain medications.

The statement released by the chief medical examiner reveals that the actor had taken a lethal combination of painkillers, sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, including oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine.

"We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications," read the brief statement.

Just minutes after the release of the medical examiner's statement, Ledger's family released their own, which read in part:

"While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."

The 28-year-old was found dead in his SoHo apartment on January 22nd.

Ledger has a two-year-old daughter Matilda Rose with ex-girlfriend Michelle Williams. The couple split up last year. They met while working on the film "Brokeback Mountain," for which Ledger earned an Oscar nomination.

Some of Ledger's other credits include "Monster's Ball", "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot." He will also appear as the Joker in "The Dark Night," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins."

Ledger's parents and other close relatives have been gathering in their hometown of Perth, Australia, this week after spending nearly two weeks in the U.S. immediately following his death.

They are reportedly planning a private service in Perth and will either bury Ledger's body or inter his cremated remains in the city.

Kim Ledger's Statement. I respect him for warning others about the dangers....

We remain humble as parents and a family, among millions of people worldwide who may have suffered the tragic loss of a child. Few can understand the hollow, wrenching, and enduring agony parents silently suffer when a child predeceases them. Today's results put an end to speculation, but our son's beautiful spirit and enduring memory will forever remain in our hearts.

While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage.

Our family enjoyed an extremely happy two week visit with Heath just prior to the New Year. Those recent precious days will stay with us forever. We as a family feel privileged to have some of his amazing magic moments captured in film. To most of the world Heath was an actor of immeasurable talent and promise. To those who knew him personally, Heath was a consummate artist whose passions also included photography, music, chess and directing. We knew Heath as a loving father, as our devoted son, and as a loyal and generous brother and friend.

We treasure our beautiful granddaughter Matilda (to our dear Michelle) as well as an unbelievably wonderful network of close friends, forever, around the world. Families rarely experience the uplifting, warm and massive outpouring of grief and support as have we, from every corner of the planet. This has deeply and profoundly touched our hearts and lives. We are eternally grateful.

At this moment we respectfully request the worldwide media allow us time to grieve privately, without the intrusions associated with press and photography.

I know that there was some chatter amongst some online fanse regarding Jake attending Heath's memorial. I was watching E news last night and they mentioned that Jake was there, they also mentioned that Michelle was there and it was reported at the time that she wasn't.

Just thought I would mention it since that blogger had to lock her entry regarding Jake and Reese at the service.

A comment on the IMDB board posted on 1/13/08 (Sunday) regarding the engagement rumors:

"ya know i heard that too, i live in charleston and heard she was vacationing here right now and that they were engaged, then i looked up gossip sites and its said nothing about it, so i didnt know if it was true or not"

The reason why I posted this was of course was because if Nailed starts filming in April in CT and SC, it will be filming right where Reese vacations. I heard that's one of her favorite placed to go and there were rumors at one point that she wanted to move there. I do wonder if she was vacationing in Charleston last month though.

Also, Mary Steenburgen is on the advisory board for the Crawford Documentary, Mary also will be playing Reese's mom in Four Christmases!!

Jake is no longer attached to Farragut North, probaby due to Nailed:

John Hughes to direct 'Farragut North'
Production to begin performances in summer
By GORDON COX
Hughes

Doug Hughes will helm "Farragut North," Beau Willimon's Broadway-bound play about a young man who is a staff member for rising presidential candidate.
Production aims to begin perfs early this summer at a theater to be determined.

"North" will be the second politically themed Rialto outing this year for producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel, whose production of David Mamet's presidential comedy "November" opened last month. Also on the "Farragut" production team are Steve Traxler, Michael Filerman and Stuart Thompson.

In recent months the rumor mill had pegged Mike Nichols, who will direct a Broadway revival of "The Country Girl" this spring, as the director of "Farragut." Jake Gyllenhaal was rumored to be interested in the lead role, but is now said to be no longer a possibility.

Hughes is one of Broadway's most regularly employed helmers, with credits including "Doubt," "Frozen," "Inherit the Wind" and Mauritus"

Vaughn, though, won't stray too far from his more acerbic "Wedding Crashers" and "Old School" brand. He's just finished a comedy in that vein, "Four Christmases." He and Reese Witherspoon play newlyweds who spend the holidays visiting four bitterly estranged parents.

Something occurred to me regarding filming for "Nailed."

An above poster reported that it will film in Conneticut and South Carolina. I suspect that the majority of it will actually be shot in Conneticut and South Carolina will only be used for the "Congress scenes."

The state house in South Carolina had the same arcitech as the Capitol building in Washington. In fact, it was directly modelled after the Capitol building. That's why many Hollywood productions use the South Carolina State House in place of the Capitol when filming. Ironically enough, Reese Witherspoon's film, "Legally Blond 2: Red, White and Blond" used the state house for this very purpose.

Jake plays a Congressman right?

I have a gut feeling that's what is going on here.

Reese's parents moved some years back, they do live in S.C. now.
Here brother and uncles still live near Nashville. She got married in S.C. and her folks may have lived their dating as far back as that.

I'll try to get some old articles for you.

Anonymous said...

Heath's funeral service will be starting soon...10:00 A.M. in Perth.
He has been in my thoughts and prayers all day.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure her parents live in Nashville.

After all, her mother is a professor at Vanderbilt University, which is in Nashville; and her father is a throat (ears and nose as well) surgeon and knows many Country stars from Nashville. During her interview with Jay Leno in October she spoke of her father

It's possible that the Witherspoon's own a summer house in Charleston, and vacation there. That would actually explain the Reese connection to Charleston (it was also there that Ryan proposed to her, while they were on "vacation") and why she visits so often, but I'm 99.9% sure her family still lives in Nashville.

After all, Reese visited there over Thanksgiving remember?

Anonymous said...

I'm not sure on this one, but I think they may have a home in Charleston at the very least. I remember Lainey saying Reese was spotted at her Uncle's home in Nashville for the holiday, I also think her brother is a Real Estate agent there, or was at one time.
It's possible Reese's parents are retired. Perhaps Reese purchased a vacation home for the entire family in Charleston.

HI, everyone. I've picked up some news on events in Perth, but there isn't too much yet. I hope UV, with her vastly superior "research skills" might be able to find better info. But so far, ninemsn.au has said that hundreds of people have arrived for Heath's funeral at Penrhos College and more are still arriving. Heath's father earlier held an impromtu news conference to let the media know they'd worked with the police to have an area from which pictures of people arriving and leaving could occur. ID is being checked at the door of the chapel. Only the immediate family will be
at the interrment. Then the wake at Heath's favorite beach will happen I think. Not sure. Only person the Aussie news is reporting on is Gemma Ward arriving at the chapel.

Heath's father has been so gracious and so thoughtful through this ordeal. I can only say they are all in my prayers.

It's possible he didn't fly to Perth. There are other people who were very close to Heath, like Ben Harper and his wife Laura Dern, and Martin Henderson, Orlando Bloom, and Russell Crowe, who may or may not have been at the LA service, but nevertheless, have to be deeply affected by his death.
Philip Noyce who would have directed him in Dirt Music, attended the service.

The story and pictures of Michelle and others swimming and celebrating Heath's life put a much needed smile on my face, thanks for posting.

Jake would not fly all the way to Perth to babysit Matilda. Jake didn't go to Australia.

Anonymous said...

The only person from America to have gone to Australia seems to be Michelle. Everyone else who was there is actually from Australia.

It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't go. In fact, I don't think that he did.

If Jake went then that's ok. If he didn't attend the funeral, then that's ok too.

I just get tired of seeing all these articles saying "will Jake attend?" "will Jake not attend?" "Jake Gyllenhaal has arrived" "Jake Gyllenhaal is no where to be seen"...etc.

quote from IHJ

I'll add to that not only the media but also BBM fans!!!!
Leave him alone...

Some Jake & Reese parts to the puzzle.

Untiltled Rufus Wainwright documentary.

Director = Sam Mendes
Link
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808524/

Sam Mendes = directed Jake in Jarhead

Sam Mendes wife = Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet = Reese Witherspoon's friend. Reese presented Kate with this years BAFTA Britanna Award. They never worked on a project together, Reese never worked with Sam either. But in the words of Reese "Imagine my good fortune when Kate Winslet moved into my neighborhood, rang my door bell and said, 'Dahling Sam [Mendes] is off shooting, and I believe our children are the same age. Could they possibly have a play date and oh, by the way, it's almost 9 o'clock and I've had nothing to drink, do you have any wine?'"

Now we all know that Jake loves Rufus, I can provide links but I don't think I need to. First there is the BBM music, then the the NYC show, later the first offical hollywood reported party to which Jake attended the party with Reese and of course the New Years Eve concert and photos.

As for Jake & Sam, Jake has made a public point that he was willing to beg for the part in Jarhead and that he went so far as to call Kate and beg her to help him get the part.

Both Jake & Reese have said that the knew each other for years. I have read blogs by so called insiders which say that friends of the duo hooked them up, that they made sure to invite both to mutual party.

It seems they have more in common than we knew, one of those things is Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet.

Another is their mutual friendship with Jennifer Aniston and her little gang: Courtney Cox, David Fincher (Jen was the one who suggested Jake to David), Cathrine Keener, etc.

Mark Ruffalo --- Reese's co-star in "Just Like Heaven" and Jake's co-star in "Zodiac."

Mark's wife Summer is said to be very good friends with Michelle Williams, so it is likely that he and Jake are close friends as well, given Jake's friendship with Heath and Michelle.

Also, have you guys noticed how many people (both actors and crew) were in both "Just Like Heaven" and "Zodiac."

A couple of IMDb posts indicating that Jake was in New Mexico this past week.

I'm sure Jake will be excoriated for drinking in a bar instead of delaying the movie, not to mention interrupting the lives of the other cast and crew, and flying to Perth, but there you have it.

Interesting info on the Sam Mendes/Rufus Wainwright doc. Hollywood is a small town!

I'm pretty convinced that blogger was telling the truth when she said she worked in catering and saw Jake and Reese at the large memorial service in LA. All the "reports" that Jake was going to Perth were wishful thinking from people on the fringes, or from the media who really doesn't know...the same media that had Reese and Jake breaking up every other week...when they weren't reporting Reese's "pregnancy."
It's a lot easier to get from NM to LA than to Perth!

Anonymous said...

The IMDB sightings seem to be credible - at least to me. I have never believed that Jake went to Perth and was surprised to read "he has arrived".

Sometimes I am getting the creepy feeling that some people are more interested in speculating about Jakes reaction than in honouring Heath - unfortunatly also some of the Brokeback fans.

I really wish people would give it a rest now.

The celebration on the beach after the funeral service was heartbreaking and a wonderful way to send someone off. Heath was a free-spirited soul - he would have loved this way saying good-bye.

Must admit, when I saw the filming schedule for Brothers I couldn't work out how on earth he could have got there - I'm sure he's said goodbye to Heath as he wanted to, and that's all that matters, how he mourns his friend is completely his own business.

The photos from the beach are just amazing, make you grin and cry at the same time - perfect send off for him.

According to this past weeks Star, Jake and Reese are living together.

Considering the source I doubt it.

IMO, Jake attenede both of the Memorials in LA because he knew that he wouldn't make the funeral in Perth due to filming.

Anonymous said...

Thanks UV, for passing along the 2 "Brothers" sightings of Jake this past week. Not surprised.... I thought it highly unlikely he would go to Perth, given "Brothers" was not done filming.

I do believe he attended at least one (if not both) of the L.A. memorials for Heath. "People" may be a gossip mag, but they do at least make an attempt to be accurate. Combined with the LJ girl's report of seeing J & R at the 2nd memorial, it just seems believable to me that he was there.

Looks like the writer's strike may really be settled..... so now I am wondering if we will see Reese or Jake as presenters at the Oscars. Reese seems the more likely bet IMO. Would love to see a clean shaven, nattily dressed Jake there though! : )

Morning all. :)

Appreciate the Brothers info, UV! It makes sense that Jake was back in NM to finish filming. All I can say is good on him. He needs to do what he needs to do. I agree that he was probably part of those LA memorials and probably spent time with the Ledgers/Michelle/Matilda privately.

Always fascinating to read the connections in HW. Everyone seems to be connected in some way.

Now we just have to wonder if J/R will still be hosting that pre-Oscars event.

"Now we just have to wonder if J/R will still be hosting that pre-Oscars event."

get real, I'm hoping they will still be there.

Can't find the article now, but I did read last week a little blurb about this "Night Before" Oscar event....... and apparently it's a "no press" party. So we may never know if J/R attended.

"According to this past weeks Star, Jake and Reese are living together."

Not that I have ever read the Star but I have thought that for a while now.

Anonymous said...

Why would the LJ story be false?

It wasn't even about Jake and Reese. It was about all the celebrities she saw while working at that event, and one line was dedicated to Jake and Reese (out of a whole page of information). She just casually mentioned how she had seen Jake and Reese there and certain people went ape-s**t.

Because certain people, who otherwise believe in fairy tales, don't believe it doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

Second, I doubt that they are living together. It's not because I think it's too soon, it's because I don't think Reese would feel comfortable having a live-in boyfriend living with her kids. I just can't believe how much stuff the tabloids make up.

Third, I think it's obvious that Reese and Jake will be at that pre-Oscar event together since they are both co-hosts of the party.

Jake finishes filming "Brothers" on Tuesday. Reese is already done filming "Four Christmases." There will probably be more photos of them together in the coming weeks.

Correction: Jake finished working on Brothers today. I think he is officially wrapped "Brothers" as I write this.

Off topic: What do you guys think about the presidential election? I was cheering for Hillary, but I'm beginning to think that she will lose. I don't write this easily. I am in total shock about this.

On a frivolous note, I sure hope the end of Brothers filming means the end of the beard. I want to see Jake's handsome face again.B.

As a supporter of Senator Clinton, I'm concerned as well. Her campaign amnager either quit or was moved elsewhere and she looks like she is losing Maine tonight, sigh.

The BAFTA's are so pro-British (and anti-American) that it's not even funny. I'm surprised Jake won for BM.

If a British person was nominated in a certain category, they almost certainly won.

Boo England.

I know it is probably very little consolation UV, but I cried too. I thought I was doing OK today, but I'm not. That is not the Award show segment I ever thought to see Heath in. The BAFTA clip, opening with young William jousting in Knight's Tale, to the scene from BBM, was very well done. He really looked beautiful.

Heath did look beautiful in that clip. I never expected to him in that category either.

The stories and the pictures coming out of Austraila regarding Heath's funeral was both sad and uplifting.

The Bafta clip had me crying all over again...

The BAFTA clip was just beautiful, just turned the BAFTAs on when that came up - felt bad for Orlando and Sienna who were obviously really close to tears, did make me glad Jake wasn't there as I'm sure the camera would have lingered on his face :(

The BAFTA's are so pro-British (and anti-American) that it's not even funny. I'm surprised Jake won for BM.

Apart from the fact that an American film and a French one completely outperformed the British film ???

Jake/Reese living together - I, obviously, don't know, but all his freetime does seem to be spent in Brentwood these days....

Yup, if Jake's not living with Reese, I bet he at least has a drawer :)
