Motion Capture

Jake Gyllenhaal filming in Toronto yesterday:

The magic of film will transform it, I know. But in stills, Jake's Double is a little dorky :)

Jake's appearance with Bear Grylls was shown in the UK for the first time today, leading to a flurry of tweets. Though most people were watching the Queen's Jubilee concert, I think plenty of Brits got to behold Iceland's natural wonders:

Fear + Excitement = Enjoyment

Thanks to the amazing Stephanie, Jake's Man v. Wild episode.

It's thrilling to watch Jake and Bear navigate the terrain and the weather. Bear is a patient, trusty guide and Jake is a quick study. The promo clips showed a glimpse, but you get to see Jake trek through snow, dig a cave, traverse a snow tunnel (scary!), cross a river and, of course, crawl on a rope over a deep ravine.

Jake was gorgeous, funny, serious, scared, intrepid, adventurous and triumphant. And Bear wasn't bad, either!

Here's Part One:

One of the adventures we didn't see in promo clips was Jake and Bear crossing a river. Which they had to do shirtless. I think that's in Part 4:

If you can't access that, here's a peek:

Is it chilly in here?

The rope crossing was amazing, even with the sneak preview we got. It was very tense waiting to see Jake make it across, and his sense of joy, relief and pride was palpable:

By the end of the episode, Jake's fear of heights seemed to disappear, as he triumphantly ascended to make their exit, dangling happily from the helicopter. What a difference two days makes!

For people who want to relive or who haven't gotten to see Jake's Man v. Wild episode: If those IHJ links are too slow, here are two separate places to find it: Five clips on youtube or the whole episode.

Boys Gone Wild

Time to get wild. Let's do a live blog/commentary as we watch the show. I'll add clips as soon as they are available. Hopefully soon, for those who can't watch the episode.

Can I get fries with that?

Probably not a phrase Jake utters a lot, but he might have been longing for a fast food fix on his Iceland adventure. In this clip from Man v. Wild, Gylls and Grylls forage for food. Well, Bear forages. Jake consumes.

Mmm. nothing like some angelica and worms after a long, cold glacial hike!

No verdict on the worm, but the root was deemed "tasty:"

Mmm - anyone hungry?

Hanging by a wire

We have a brief clip from Jake Gyllenhaal's Man v. Wild appearance. Watch Jake confront his fears and cross a cavern on a ropeline:

Updated to include second clip and to replace the original ET clip with the Discovery clip. Jake takes the lead in this one:

There's a little more in the ET promo. We get to hear Bear shouting Jake's name, hopefully not in panic!

In the first clip, you can definitely feel Jake's apprehension and his exhilaration. Can't wait to see the full episode.

Two more clips. First up, Jake waiting to be picked up for the trip. Forget the fact that we saw Jake and Bear on a plane headed to Iceland together :)

And here's Jake jumping into a gap in order to retrieve a sheep's carcass. Yum!

Jake's no stranger to the ropes, but usually, there's a full team of stunt advisors standing by:
