He'll follow his own star

Due to Hurricane Sandy, Monday's New Eyes for the Needy dinner to honor Jake Gyllenhaal had to be postponed. But in October, 2006, Americans for the Arts gave Jake an award for Artistic Excellence. In the video produced for the event, Jarhead director Sam Mendes and actor (and brother-in-law) Peter Sarsgaard talk about Jake.

They have some great things to say about Jake, as an artist and a person:

He comes from a family of artists but he's definitely a standout

When he gets right to the edge, he's willing to jump in

An individual at all costs

He will not do the obvious roles

Under the guise of a handsome leading man

Individual, quirky, artist

He's completely an original

He's a very dear person, very good man

The best is yet to come

Jake's career probably hasn't gone the way many thought it would. But this year has certainly brought several career hallmarks and highlights. (Berlinale, Time To Dance, If There Is, End of Watch). So here's to the future!

Here's an interview with Jake from that night.

Part of that "best" would have to be Jake's performance on the New York stage in If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet. Jake and Brían F. O'Byrne were interviewed by NY1 about their experience so far.

(Photo of Enid Graham in the role previously played by Michelle Gomez.)

NY1 talks a bit about the play at the beginning of this clip and then gives a rave review to Jake at the end.

Awww. He looks so young, and such a sweetheart! Thanks for these. I love what Sam Mendes said about him. Jake is a beautiful person.

And wow, that really was a rave review for Jake in the play.

Javier Bardem is amazing in it!

Hmmmm. I just realized that Enid Graham played Michael Shannon's wife in the first two seasons of Boardwalk Empire. She was also n Blue Valentine with Michelle Williams.

In an interview from September Jake confirmed again that he would like to direct (Esquire: "Your whole family is in the business. Are we going to see you direct?" Jake: "If I had the privilege to do that, yeah, I hope so.")

I remember when he received that award, thanks for that clip UV! It really wasn't that long ago but he looked so young!

I hope that everyone here that was in the path of hurricane Sandy is safe.

Yeah, that's a great shot of Hugh on the fan poster. Would love to see some cool posters for this or An Enemy. The stories seem to lend themselves to dark and moody.

Tweety, it was a long time ago and it was just yesterday :) It's nice to relive that moment at this great moment for Jake's career.

Hello, Hagen! That Esquire interview has some great lines. Will try to post some later.

Bobbyanna: It was great to hear Sam M talk about Jake. I hope they work together again someday.

Monica: You have to wait for EoW but you saw Skyfall already! Glad to hear it lives up to the hype.

A few more play tweets:

Hit #BookofMormon and “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” today. Leave it to theatre to turn everything in my heart around.

Sat third row at Jake Gyllenhaals play today. Yep. Life is complete. #jakegyllenhaal #ifthereisihaven'tfound http://instagr.am/p/Rdf0sitxaP/

If There is... Good show with phenomenal design and direction. And Jake Gyllanhall with great dialect work!

UltraViolet said...

Ah, interesting, Monica. Well, they are also using a nice shot of Hugh for casting. Hope they get equally good Jake shots :)

bobbyanna said...

I was thinkng. (!) The timing, the topic, and the staging of Jake's play should have a powerful impact on its audiences right now.
The intersections with real life are impossible to ignore.

I really love that very first profile shot in this post, UV.

UltraViolet said...

Did anyone watch the NY interview? I liked Jake's answer about being part of the NY theater community. Just from observation, it is a very keen and very critical set of people. I think it would be special to feel a part of it.

bobbyanna said...

UV, I can't get it to play. They want me to install Quicktime 7 which I did, but it still won't work. : (

UltraViolet said...

What a pain! I did upload it to Daily Motion. I just unlcoked it, so you can try there. But you might have the same issue, I don't know.

bobbyanna said...

Yaaay! It worked! Thanks, UV. Nice interview. Enjoyed watching Jake & Brian together. They've bonded! : )

UltraViolet said...

Rachel I forgot to agree on the gif. Creepy but compelling.

Glad you could see the interview, Bobbyanna. It's fun to see/hear Jake and Brian together.

"Jake Gyllenhaal looking like a regular ol' NYer on a bike commuting to work, as I walk past the roundabout theatre."

Jake has really grown up as a man, leaving in NYC near his family and friends and just being normal. I believe him when he say EOW changed him. I think the PR geared Hollywood days are over for him. I know he will do PR for his films and hopefully plays but no "random" photo ops for just being a good guy.

Scott said...

"living" not "leaving"

bobbyanna said...

From Twitter:

"Seriously almost cried when jake gyllenhaal left the theatre right after the show. But don't worry I'll be back tomorrow and I WILL MEET HIM"

Awww. That's disappointing. Tomorrow is another day.: )

Chica said...

I love that first pic of him, sigh. Mendes is one of my favorite directors and I do hope that Jake gets a hance to work with him again.

That had to be a sight, Jake bycling through midtown. It's chaos in NY with people lining up to take buses in lieu of the subway. The trsins are slowly getting back on track so to speak but it took me 3 hours to get to work yesterday.

The LES is still in the dark and from the tweets I gather that Jake loves in that area.

bobbyanna said...

Article in today's NYT about how some New Yorkers are bypassing public transportation and riding bikes.

Hang in there, Chica! (((chica))).
Tomorrow will be better.: )

Scott said...

Oh man, hotels are evicting families because of the NYC marathon. I know that NYC folks had at least a week's warning about this storm but I think it would be ok to cancel the marathon.

Anonymous said...

one thing about NYers is we're very resilient. And now that Jake is living in NY it's rubbing off on him. So he can't take mass transit into work, he'll bike :D I wonder how far it is from where he lives?

I liked the Prisoner poster, I hope there are more coming, one with Jake.

I am not surprised they didn't cancel the marathon. They want some semblance of normalcy and that the city will go on. And the marathon is a part of that.

Gov. Cuomo said power will be restored to all of Manhattan by Saturday, if true, it's good news. Every day shows improvement.

But Staten Island & Queens are in trouble. I've been thinking about this a lot, & I understand why many people wish the Marathon had been postponed. I do too.

I'm looking at the logistical problems it creates, and possible shortages of volunteers and first responders where they're needed.

Things always go wrong, and people are already stressed. People are stressed.

They still need volunteers at the shelters and community centers. There are homeless people, elderly people, disabled people in the outer boroughs.

The clean up task must be daunting on Long Island and Staten Island. Police and fire crews are exhausted and burned out. Most of them are also residents who lost power or even homes, their families split up.

So, I can't wrap my brain around the Marathon this weekend. Lives are just too unsettled. Even one more week would have made a huge difference.

Who handles crowd control and keeps order? Instead of the National Guard helping hurricane victims, will they be used during the Marathon? Will people who are already struggling to get to jobs be faced with even worse traffic problems?

I know I'm pessimistic, and I guess there are good arguments on either side of the issue. I just worry...: ) That's why Bloomberg's Mayor & I'm not! : )

UltraViolet said...

I can see both sides of the marathon argument but it is hard to see all those resources expended when so many people are in need. I think it's too late to cancel now, though.

about an hour ago near Park Slope, NY ·

What?! His sister lives so close to me he was probably visiting her....

stop it.

Shut the front door!!! lol

I never know what to do when stuff like that happens. I yelled at Steve Buscemi in the street once. He yelled back. It was lovely. =)

.....so are you guys having dinner tonight..you set that up already?

I've had that same encounter. Weird, huh?

He proposed. I said Yes! Invitations are gonna be in the mail soon y'all.

This seems sort of familiar, but if not: video of Jake on the set of Naomi's movie this summer.

And a tweet:

The NYC Marathon has been canceled. Looks like they took all your concerns seriously. :-)

UltraViolet said...

I think a lot of people had concerns. As much as it sucks for the runners, it seems like the wise thing to do.

And lucky for Jake and LOL:

According to Con Edison and every single person on Twitter, the power is back on in the East Village, SoHo, other parts of Lower Manhattan. Check out this Instagrammed proof of a working stoplight.

bobbyanna said...

Just read on Twitter that 600 elderly & disabled people are being sheltered at the Park Slope Armory.

They were asking for clean blankets and donations. Maybe now that power is on they can get back home. If they have homes.

There was no indication of where they came from. I know the National Guard was carrying people out of Staten Island & Queens bringing them to shelter.

He contributed $2,500 on October, 29th. His company (Cykel Corp.) is named after the Swedish word for bicycle.

Anonymous said...

I have mixed feelings about the cancellation of the marathon.

I didn't know Jake had his own company. I had heard he had his own production company, I don't know if he ever did anything with it. Nine Stories.

I wonder if he is using Cykel Corp to create his own movies (production)

Hope you're all well

Thanks for posting the link to the NY 1 interview UV!

Bloomberg is a douche and should have canceled the marathon earlier in the week so the runners didn't have to make the trop.

The fact that the marathon starts in Staten Island, one of the hardest hit areas shows how out of touch and what a tool he is.

Scott said...

"Bloomberg is a douche"

While I disagreed with the Marathon continuing I also could see the point of life moving on. A Miami Heat player did not want to play an NBA game with the Knicks in NYC this past Thursday because he and some of his teammates felt there were more important things than a basketball game but the Knicks organization and the NBA felt it was important especially for young people to concentrate on something else.

The NBA and its players dominate a million dollars or more to the relief effort. I do think logistically the Marathon would have been difficult to pull off but it would have been symbolic. I am so sorry for what the East coast is dealing with now but the storm warning was more than a week's notice.

Folks in the south and tornado alley do not have that luxury often and have been without food and water for weeks when bad weather happens. I hope this teaches everyone patience and to bow down to Mother Nature, she is no joke.

I don't consider Mayor Bloomberg a douche for trying for some sort of normalancy.

Scott said...

should be donate not dominated although the Knicks won, it was great.

I'm glad to hear that "Prisoners" has such a high-profile cast.

NY Post: "Current Broadway star Jake Gyllenhaal has been hanging at theater haunts. He was spotted Thursday night following a performance of his new show, 'If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet', at Bar Centrale, a thespian favorite next door to Joe Allen. 'Jake was with a guy and a girl having drinks in a booth, smiling and sporting the scruffy look he rocks in the show,' said a spy. The source added that the 'End of Watch' movie star was 'engulfed in conversation discussing the Hurricane Sandy disaster.' "
