Love and Other Trailer Drugs

Updated to include our first shot of Jake on his motorcycle. He had lunch with his father and rode his bike to the restaurant.

We've gotten a second trailer for Love and Other Drugs. A trailer a week sounds like a good plan - this can be our new drug:

The new trailer reveals a more of the movie's more dramatic themes. And it shows Jake Gyllenhaal's character in serious ladies' man mode:

Nice to see Fox getting its LaOD act together. Now we need a poster, some official stills and a few festival dates!

I'm glad to see the awkward tag line (Once in a while someone comes along and changes everything you believe about yourself) missing from the second trailer. At least, I think it's gone.

Let's hope this tweet from Duncan Jones is indicative of a normal phase for directors in the film-making process:

I cannot WAIT to get back to writing! Hopefully this post on Sc will be over soon, and I can get to work on some new things!

UltraViolet said...

I think this is the link Carla posted previously, about Fox's intention to do an awards campaign for LaOD. It will be interesting to see where they go, since they eschewed the festival route.

I think Bobbyanna might have mentioned this previously. A comment from someone who saw an LaOD screening:

I saw this movie last week at a private screening in La and I have to say that I was extremely surprised by it. Jake completely owned the part and was wonderful--and I don't really like him as an actor. Hathaway was just as good as she was in Rachel Getting Married, but can I just say how beautiful she is? Edward Zwick deserves an Oscar just for getting Hathaway completely naked for half of her time on screen...that's not a joke either.

Other than that, the writing was good but the film had structural problems. I'd call it a modern day love story set in 1996.

Hathaway and Jake are definite contenders.

Could be a ringer - but it's still nice to hear some praise for Jake.

Monica said...

I'm still absorbing this trailer, but I'm in love with these two.

UV, I think is normal. Duncan Jones is young and maybe he's in a moment of creativity.

Thanks for the links, UV. So nice to see Jake being praised.

Carla said...

I also would like to know the route Fox is going with their campaign - IMO this film is perfect for filmfestivals - definitely a crowdpleaser.

After the first trailer some people were saying it looks more like a usual rom com and not like Oscar material - I hope the second trailer changes this - looks even better than the first one - shows a bit more of the "dramatic" side.

Wonderful to see the chemistry between Anne and Jake.

Duncan Jones - I am sorry but I am getting more and more the feeling that he is not much into SC and sees it just as a kind of interlude between his own projects "Moon" and "Mute"...At least I don´t see anything near the excitement as when he talks or twitters about "Moon". I really would like to see a bit more enthusiasm for Source Code...!

JF said...

LOVE the new trailer!

Can't wait to see this. :)

Anonymous said...

I'd give Duncan a little time. "Moon" was his first movie and it did so well and it was cricially acclaimed and probably all overwhelming for him and exciting. Making a second movie which was more a "standard" type movie as far as with more money, more studio..more about everything it felt different to him and more pressure too.
It's also a completely different type of movie than "Moon".
Doubt if there has been a final cut and chance for him to see a finished product. When it's time for it to be shown in a preview, etc. and him to talk about it am sure he will be enthusiastic.

After seeing the second trailer, I have to say. I've never seen anyone look this good. Ever. This man is really unbelievable. And he has such an expressive face. He really doesn't have to say a word.

The 2nd trailer's very flattering, and it gives just enough information. I'm torn, because while I'm delighted to see these two trailers, I don't want them to release so many trialers, that people feel as if they already saw the movie.

Biker Jake! Whoa! Too hot!:)

Seeing the pictures from yesterday, with Ramona, and now these, I have a feeling he's doing "manual labor."
Maybe some carpentry? It looks like he has some paint splatters on his jeans.

Tweety said...

I'm so glad they released the 2nd trailer, the fun and serious tone of the film is presented very well, nice balance.

Jake is on fire in this and he and Anne look so good, I love them together:)

I hope Fox didn't drop the ball by skipping the festivals.

Jake on his bike finally! Ha, he had to run out and try and pay the meter! Good to se him with Papa, he is looking major scruffy, definately in vacation mode.

I wouldn't worry too much about Jones and SC UV, I just think that he is looking forward to working on his next project.

Monica said...

wow Ewan McGregor has a motorcycle Triumph Bonneville T100.

Niiiiie bike. I approve. :-)

Chica said...

Jake on a motorcycle, now that is sexy!

Love the 2nd LAOD trailer, thanks for posting!!

Carla said...

"Jake is on fire in this and he and Anne look so good, I love them together:)"

I absolutely agree - they are sexy, funny and emotional and I love every bit- also the supporting actors look great!

Finally Jake and his bike! He looks so sexy - and with the helmet you don´t see the beard..:-)

UltraViolet said...

Yup, Mary, looks like that NYC sighting was mistaken identity or just fabrication.

Carla, I agree that Duncan seems far more enamored of Moon and Mute than SC. Doesn't mean SC won't be good or that he's not invested in it. But he doesn't feel passionate about it.

Anon, there is a final cut of SC and it has been shown to an audience. So it's not as if DJ is waiting to see how it all turned out.

I don't know anything about motorcycles, but it sure looks like a nice one. And if Ewan McG, Monica and FL approve, it must be good :)

Bobbyanna, I agree that Fox shouldn't reveal too much. I was sort of kidding about the trailer-a-week thing :)

UltraViolet said...

and with the helmet you don´t see the beard

That's too funny, Carla!

I don't mind the beard so much, especially since all the LaOD stuff is the complete opposite.

still gushing bobbyanna said...

"Jake is on fire in this and he and Anne look so good, I love them together:)"

They look so relaxed and loose and just completely into each other. Very natural fit.

Speaking of a natural fit,
Jake sure makes a suit and tie look unbelieveably sexy! There's such a natural ease, and he always looks comfortable, both in his clothes..and out of them!:)

Sheba baby said...

THUD!!!!

They should just play this trailer, not that I didn't like the first one but this one displays the charms and sex appeal of Jake and his character more.

Also, we get to see why this isn't your run of the mill rom-com.

Agree that he is on fire and he and Anne are a perfect fit!

I was wondering when and if we would get to see Jake on his motorcycle after that sighting, looking good Mr G but boy is he ever looking like Mr Grizzly!

FL said...

Have you noticed the set design in this film is all shades of blue, turquoise, Tiffany blue, blue-green? It's visually very stunning. Must be to highlight Jake's eyes?? ;-)

So, looking at the trailer(s) again I'm reminded of a tweet from way back on November 22, 2009:

Magee Hospital was covered in fake snow! And it was called Massachusettes General Hospital for the movie!

Which irked me at the time, not because she couldn't spell the name of the state correctly, lol, but if you're going to use a very visually famous hospital, I feel you should actually USE that very famous hospital. At least the exteriors. Or try to make it look somewhat similar.

Because this is not this.

Okay, just had to get that off my chest before November 24th. :-)

suvee said...

Okay, the 2nd L&OD trailer has totally confirmed my hope that this is going to be THE Jake movie I have been waiting for. Not only does he look absolutely stunning, but the chemistry between him and Anne is awesome! And I am so happy that she is getting positive critical attention.... I always thought she was unfairly ignored for her work in BBM. IMO, she was every bit as good as Michelle Williams.

I know nothing about motorcycles, but I do know a HOT man on a bike when I see one! I'm so happy! :)

bobbyanna said...

"Doesn't mean SC won't be good or that he's not invested in it. But he doesn't feel passionate about it"

I've noticed this too, UV.
The passion and the excitement are missing!

From his own comments, there were some unpleasant experiences with people 'looking over his shoulder' and other pressures with SC.

But even if the experience wasn't as fun and pleasant and crazy for him, I still feel bad that he doesn't enthuse about Jake nearly as much as he still gushes about Sam Rockwell.

I remember his tweeting about how sad he felt to be leaving London for the Chicago shoot. So something was clearly missing.

I shouldn't compare, and I really like Sam, who did an outstandng job. but still...

UltraViolet said...

There's mixed reaction to the trailers from film blogs, but posters and tweeters seem to like them. (Wells didn't like the second trailer, FWIW.)

There's such a natural ease, and he always looks comfortable, both in his clothes..and out of them!

ITA, Bobbyanna. It's one of the things I love about Jake, on and off-camera.

I know nothing about motorcycles, but I do know a HOT man on a bike when I see one! I'm so happy!

You've summed it up for me, suvee! Hee.

UltraViolet said...

But even if the experience wasn't as fun and pleasant and crazy for him, I still feel bad that he doesn't enthuse about Jake nearly as much as he still gushes about Sam Rockwell.

Ugh, yes. It's petty, but it really bugs.

Much like the fake MGH in LaOD, FL! Why couldn't they just film the damned movie in Boston?

Monica said...

I've imagined that we would have mixed reactions, but many of these reactions comes from the fact that it is being released as Oscar contender. So, it causes doubt.
I think the reaction of JW is because the new trailer to be early and to have shown much more than, for him, should.

Leaving aside the Oscar (yes, Oscar is good, but he does not always choose the best), I see a good movie. Funny how the great romantic comedies of the 90s, where you laugh, cry and fall in love. And with great performances.

Duncan Jones is just trying to get more and more people watch the movie Moon. Few people saw this movie.

sheba said...

Am I the only one that didn't like Moon? It was just OK but I guess that's my own honest opinion. Nothing new and innovative unlike the promise that SC has.

I'm looking forward to that jumping around action story that will unfold. Duncan may have been talking about 'the suits' and the pressure they put on filmakers to recreate their first hit. Duncan was free to do whatever he wanted with Moon as there were no expectations but I guess his next film will be scruitinised and measured. I hope his collaborative experience with jake was a specially memorable one.

Now onto the real story. Total hotness! Jake on his noble steed and helmet, the walk (well you can just imagine) and the ruffled, tossled easy rider look he has when the helmet's removed. Hotness. Poppa G ain't bad either. Also, am I the only one that's lovin the beard? It looks soft and wavy, good enough to nuzzle in. Happy to see him kicking back and looking so relaxed.

I wish they hadn't put that second trailer out. It gives away too much. I promised not to look at anything else but good goram, it's Jake and I can't help it - like a moth to a flame :/

In essence, I am grateful though. Really.

Anonymous said...

Duncan h as said he'd want to work with Jake again.
Oscar talk is usually a sign that the movie is good - maybe the right movie doesn't always win, but movies and actors nominated are never not worthy of a nomination.

How swoon-worthy is Jake with his niece, with the beard and with the bike!!!!!!!! SQUEE!!

UltraViolet said...

Sheba, I am going to try not to watch and read everything about LaOD, too. But it's hard - to quote Anne from the trailer!

I've never watched Moon. It just doesn't interest me. And now I'm just tired of reading and hearing about it. Maybe I'll watch it before SC comes out.

Jake Gyllenhaal Becomes His Movie Title. Kind of cute. And love that first screen cap!

Hm. I wonder what it is about that last link you posted, UV - my company's server won't let me open it. I get this notification:

Hmm - that's weird. I do seem to have an extra character at the end. Here's the original link and the text:

The schedule for this year’s Toronto International Film Festival just became top-heavy with anticipated pedigree films that aspire to be in the Best Picture race for 2010.

TIFF organizers released the next wave of Gala and Special Presentation films for this year’s fest, which runs Sept. 9-19. In the process, they confirmed a few titles that were rumored to be heading to Canada and also unveiled a handful of surprise titles that suddenly makes this year’s fest a must-attend event.

Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours,” Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” Casey Affleck’s “I’m Still Here” and Matt Reeves’ “Let Me In” are just a few of the heavy hitters added to the fest’s Special Presentations section. “Last Night,” by Massy Tadjedin, was selected as the festival’s closing night film. It stars Keira Knightley, Eva Mendes, Sam Worthington and Guillaume Canet in a film about past and present loves.

In addition, TIFF has programmed new films by John Sayles, Guillern Morales, John Turturro, Mitch Glazer, and “Milk” scribe Dustin Lance Black.

Of course, we won’t know the magnitude of the programming until all films have screened. But given the talent on screen and behind the lens, this is shaping up to be one of the most impressive TIFF lineups in recent memory.

To learn more, visit www.tiff.net.

FL said...

Thanks. Okay, THIS Casey Affleck’s “I’m Still Here” I don't get at all. Will there really be a market at TIFF for people who want to witness Joaquin Phoenix's year of living dangerously...on purpose...in order to make a movie about it?

UltraViolet said...

I've never understood that, FL. If it was all just fake, then who cares? I can't imagine people's reactions were interesting enough to warrant a whole film.

Official LaOD site

Nothing there but the trailer. And here's the official FB page. They link to Prez Hilton, which isn't an auspicious start.

Monica said...

I do not know what to expect from that movie with Joaquin Phoenix.
I remember a Brazilian critic saying that he should not play with his career, because the movie industry is very serious.
He had or still have a brilliant career. An incredible actor.
I need to see the movie.

Finally just saw the second trailer...wow...talk about powerful! The emotions Jake and Anne bring to this are wonderful and heartbreaking. I can't wait to see this!

I think this movie needs to be at one of the film fests to continue the buzz. I think we still have a little time in the next week or so to hear of more additions to the TIFF schedule.

UV, the one saving grace about the LAOD Facebook page is when I clicked on the link that clearly has a Perez title it only takes you back to the Facebook page not to Perez's site.

Holy.Crap.Yes. Jake is looking real good on that bike. What is it about men on bikes that is so hot?Sheba you're definitely not alone with lovin the beard or thinking moon was ok. I actually bought moon without watching it since hollywood video was closing the movies were cheap and critics loved and so did jake so i thought why not? It was disappointing probably because i hyped it up,i need to stop doing that.LAOD looks amazing i cant wait to watch it over and over again!

suvee said...

Have you noticed the set design in this film is all shades of blue, turquoise, Tiffany blue, blue-green? It's visually very stunning.

Good point, FL! It is a beautiful palette. And it's interesting that the few warm colors are almost always associated with Anne's character.... her brown coats, the furniture and the lighting in her apartment, the cinnamon sheets. Cool Jamie, Warm Maggie..... good use of color to enhance the emotional impact of the story.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Good pick-up on the colors of the set designs FL and Suvee:Blue/cool, Jaime and Brown/warm ,Maggie.

And speaking of cool and hot, that describes Jake on his motorcycle, Papa G ain't bad either!

I wish that Duncan was more enthusiasric about SC too, perhaps it's due to the fact that he had HW looking over his shoulder as ge has mentioned.

UltraViolet said...

The color scheme comments are cool. Let's hope that attention to detail is apparent in other aspects of the movie.

I think I like the first trailer more, but it could just be that I love that Cure song. It will of course require multiple viewings of both to make a firm decision.

There was apparently a screening of LaOD in London yesterday. From a multimedia journalist's twitter:

Just seen pre-screening of Love & Other Drugs with Jake Gylenhall. Total movie magic!

Total movie magic sounds good to me!

From the Jezebel LaOD trailer comments. A lot of negatives but positive posts, too. But these were interesting:

yraye 08/15/10: I saw a sneak preview of this film. Jake G was naked in it A LOT, Anne Hathaway was awesome and sassy, and overall, it was a pretty good film. I'd see it again in theaters.

BlondeGoddess 08/15/10: @kimberlyraye: You had me at naked.

kimberlyraye 08/15/10: @BlondeGoddess: I will say this: I wasn't a jake fan going into the film, but I was DEFINITELY a fan after.

girl_talk 08/15/10: That was filmed in my city! I saw him jogging regularly. And yes, it was glorious

rachelpi 08/15/10: @girl_talk: They filmed at my work! I am going to see this solely so I can play "spot the location I recognize".

MsAvignon 08/15/10: @girl_talk: My BFF's coworker met him, and said he looked like an IRL Ken Doll.

girl_talk 08/15/10: @MsAvignon: Yeah, he's terribly handsome. He went into my friend's restaurant and asked for a cup or ice. He was pleasantly when they told him it was free. This is Pittsburgh, not LA. Ice comes free here.

Two funny tidbits. From a playwright:

And finally, if you could work with any actor, director or playwright, living or dead, who would you chose and why?

I'd love to be on stage with Jake Gyllenhaal, just because he is so attractive. Is that wrong?

No idea if this is true:

Jake Gyllenhaal - Prince of Politeness

Los Angeles is known for its traffic. So, you can only imagine what a ‘pleasant’ drive I was having on the bumper to bumper Hollywood Freeway. AARRGGHH!! Remember those drive-by traffic shootings? Hey – I’m not supporting it – I just really am beginning understand it!

OK, back to the car – convertible actually – la de da de dah. So here I am, merging onto the Hollywood Freeway and nobody, I mean nobody wants to let ‘little ol’ me’ in. I’m such a nice guy and I was having a good hair day, I just couldn’t understand why nobody was letting me in.

My merging lane was coming to an end – and you know what that means – the lane is slowly getting narrower – and my patience is slowly getting less and less. Is anybody going to let me in??!!

Finally another dude (did I just say dude?) in a convertible motions to me. He is letting me in! I was reassured that I was a nice guy and having a good hair day. Even better, I check into my rearview mirror after I pull in to wave to this good highway Samaritan and wouldn’t you know it? It was Jake Gyllenhall! Yes the Prince of Persia himself! As I wave thank you, he gives a cool Brokeback Mountain nod of acknowledgement. Is there such a thing as a Brokeback Mountain nod?

Another London tweeter:

Just got back from the screening of Love and Other Drugs.. OMG! That film was WICKED! Loved it!

Carla said...

Thanks for all the links!

From what I have seen the trailers are getting a positive response, but many people don´t understand how this could be an Oscar contender.

Interesting to watch how Fox will present the film in their awards campaign.

Personally I have lost mostly all respect for the Ampas after what happened with BBM but I would like to see Jake on the Red Carpet looking sexy with his Tux and being part of the madness....:-))

It is funny that the first FB link is to Perez Hilton...I hate his site but he has a huge amount of readers and if many of them will watch the trailer, its fine with me.

BTW the trailer has been seen by over 350.000 people on Youtube in four days.

Paula said...

I prefer the first trailer too only because I think the second trailer give too much away IMO.

That said, they are both effective and Jake and Anne have tons of chemistry!

The buzz has been amazing, Anne has been getting all the acting praise based on the screenings, but they like Jake too, I would love for this to be a big hit for Jake.

Thanks for all the links, Perez is scum but he does have a ton of followers.

I love the scruffy, motorcycle riding Jake in these pics, there is something about a man on a bike!

Awwww, very sweet - loving all the positive comments for LAOD, and a polite and courteous driver is a rare thing, glad Jake is one of them. :)

UltraViolet said...

That Gyllenhaal/Weinberg house is beautiful.

Carla, I did see that the view count on the LaOD video was pretty high. I swear, that's not all me!

Seriously, I hope it's a good sign.

Speaking of trailers, I don't get the buzz for the Black Swan trailer. It looks melodramatic and campy to me. But people are gushing over it.

I admit to being a little disappointed the LaOD folks didn't come up with a killer trailer. But I am still enjoying it.

From imdb:

I saw this last night at a test screening here in London. Both me and my friend came out of the cinema absolutely, unanimously loving the film. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but at the end we were asked to fill out a comment card and it ticked pretty much every good box going.

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway have a brilliant chemistry on screen and the story seemlessly went from hilarious to heart-touchingly sad. It can take a lot to make me laugh, but there were some truly laugh out loud belly laughs, and it can take a lot to make me cry, but the way the film deals with Hathaway's character's Parkinsons disease was incredibly emotional.

I just watched the trailer and it does a decent job of telling you what the plot is about, but the film itself has so much going for it it's hard to condense it down to a 2 minute trailer, so don't judge a film by it's trailer.

All in all, it's by far one of the best drama/romantic/comedies I've seen in a long long time. Highly recommended!

And another LaOD tweet from the London journalist quoted above:

Great movie, completely unexpected grown-up love

Thanks so much for all the links and updates, loving all the LAOD reviews from the screenings.

And more pics of Jake on his motorcycle please!!

bobbyanna said...

Thanks for the update on "Casa Gyllenhaal," FL. It's a beauty.

Great that we have both trailers, and the second does give more story line, but I prefer the first one, too. It highlights Jake's charater more, IMO.

I'm glad Jake's safety helmet completely covers his head. I like knowing his face is protected. And while I'm really excited to see him on his bike, I'd hate it if the papparazzi create problems for him.

All the tweets and feedback from test screenings is just wonderful.

Emphasizing "the playboy Viagra salesman who finds true love" angle, over the "free spirit with Parkinson's who finds true love,"
in the marketing and advertising should be a no brainer.

The screenings at least build up buzz and allow them to track the interest before it opens.

OT/FYI: Just read somewhere that Adam Levine,in partnership with his dad, is launching a new clothing line in Las Vegas either today or tomorrow. Called "222" and it'll be jeans t-shirts, and leather jackets for guys, and a few items for women, as well.

Thanks for that OT news on Levine Bobbyanna, maybe his pal Jake will show up wearing one of their leather jackets now that he has a motorcycle:)

OT Last night I was at Coney Island to see a show called Magic at Coney and had a blast! Nothing but old school magic: card tricks, dissapearing eggs and other items and re-appearing, etc. Didn't think magicians did stuff like that anymore!

UltraViolet said...

It will be fun to see if Jake sports any of the 222 line.

PopSugar is having a shirtless poll. They have oh so cleverly matched Jake against Ryan Phillippe in the latest round, for anyone who wants to vote. He beat McBongo in the last round.

I also saw that Glamour's list of the sexiest men placed Jake at 19. Enough said about that!

Anonymous said...

Have noticed over the years the majority of the time actors who have roles in romantic movies are the ones who always make the "sexiest" list. The first real attention Brad Pitt had was "Thelma & Louise" where he has sex. Relationship movies where there are love scenes. Jake has had very few of those actually.(Not counting BBM)..and there was some kissing here and there in others but it wasn't the theme of the movie.
I think maybe after Nov. the perception of Jake as a romantic leading man will definitely change and he'll find himself quite a bit higher in those polls.
Annie

Did want to add I do know there are some movies with sex scenes of a sort but they were indie films and still not what you could call "adult" romantic roles.

Definitely, suvee and mary. Clearly some kind of computer error!

Annie, I think you make a good point. Jake hasn't been in a mainstream, big budget romantic movie, so LaOD could be a big change for him.

I just hope Fox doesn't drop the ball in promotion and that the film's editing has kept the good parts (so to speak).

Maggie was on The Early Show this morning, and she talks a bit about Jake. It's around the five minute mark.

Love Jake trying out the iPhone video chat feature.

sheba said...

I always love to hear Jake and Maggie talk about each other with such love and respect and sometimes irreverence.

With L&OD, I look forward to guilt-free objectification of that awesome body (yeah, will check out the story too).

How astute of y'all to notice the colour palets and hues used in just the trailer. So appropriate. The steely-blue of determination and ambition with the browns of warmth, comfort and romance. When you mix blues with browns what colour do you get (is it purple? - the colour of love and destiny).

I hope to heaven that they choose the right music that could make this film a modern day 'Love Story' or 'The Way We Were'. I enjoy the soundtracks from Jake's film as they transport me to that space and time in reliving that movie. I just hope they get it right.

Fox seems to be doing it right as this movie seems to be gaining interest on it's own merits, it won't need a big blaze of publicity but they need to be more strategic with their promotion. So much to look forward to :)

Jake at # 19? These polls are baffling at times!

I agree Annie, LOAD is his first major mainstream romantic film for Jake, his standings in these polls should change after it released.

So far I like the rolling out of LAOD for the most part (I don't like the fact that it missed Venice and TIFF) but interest and buzz are building.

Thanks for that link to Maggie on the Early show, I love when she mentions Jake in her interviews.
