Unnamed Moon Rising

A couple of writers for the Untitled Moon Project sat down to discuss the evolution of the film and the lead character to be played by Jake Gyllenhaal, they hope. It looks like they're trying for an early 2010 start date.

We've heard previously from Doug Liman that Jake has been very involved in the creation of his character. John Freeman Gill, a 30Ninjas editor, helped to write an earlier draft of the movie. Simon Kinberg is a producer on the film - as is Jake, apparently - and has been working with Doug Liman and with Jake on the latest draft.

JOHN FREEMAN GILL: What kind of action hero has Jake said that he’s interested in playing?
SIMON KINBERG: A smart action hero. Jake is an Oscar-nominated, great dramatic actor, who also has the physical body to play action. And the movies he loves are things like the Bourne movies; he loves a smart, cerebral, capable character, who doesn’t lead from muscles, who leads from intelligence, but when necessary can actually also rough it up. But this character is not so much what you would consider a traditional action character in the sense of a guy who shoots a gun and explodes things and beats up a crowd of people in a fistfight. He’s actually more somebody who has this dream of going to the Moon, and by hook or crook, and quite a bit of crook, is gonna get there, and so he’s a little bit more like us. A little bit less of a superhero.

Quite a bit of crook - I like that!

JFG: What particular strengths of Jake’s as an actor are you hoping to draw on?
SK: I think he has an innate kindness to him, as a person and as an actor. And what’s interesting about that is when you play against that he becomes even more interesting, because you’re never going to feel like he’s evil; you’re always going to understand that there’s a fundamental kindness at the core of his being. So you can allow him to do things that feel like the wrong things, or are motivated by the wrong motive, because you do feel at the end of the day that there’s some kindness that will overcome whatever his personal issues are. So that’s one thing. You have a lot of leeway to actually fuck him up, because he feels so decent at the core. And he’s also an actor who, because of his big eyes, and because it feels like there’s a lot going on behind his eyes, he doesn’t have to talk much about his emotions. There are some actors who don’t feel as penetrable. So you sort of have to overcompensate for that by giving them some scene where someone says, you know, “I remember when you were seven years old and your mom died.” With Jake, because there’s so much emotion he carries just as a good actor and as someone who has these very expressive eyes, you don’t have to do a lot of work to make us feel that he is an emotive character. He just gives you a lot of flexibility as a writer. ...

but I think what’s really special about Jake is that he has this innate goodness to him. And it’s in everything. Every movie you watch of his, you feel it, and the more interesting way to go with that is to bury it a little bit. And to take for granted it’s there, and to give him a different thing to play.

Here are the three movies/characters cited as models for the character:

Jason Bourne

Lawrence of Arabia

Treasure of the Sierra Madre

It's late and I'm terrible at photoshop, but maybe someone else can come up with a combo of those three!

It's fascinating to hear about this project. I hope it continues to develop with thought and care. And with Jake in the lead. Thanks to the 30Ninjas crew for giving us a peak into the process.

Some new-to-me Jake photos from the Jarhead premiere. Nothing exciting but I did love the way Jake looked that night:

You can see his innate sexiness :)

I totally pressed "Publish" too soon. I didn't intend to post this tonight. And on that note, I'm off. I've been under the weather and I don't think posting this late is wise! Apologies for any errors :)

Okay, so if it's a caper movie, and Jake's a bit of a shady (but at the core good) character, can I now propose Robert Downey Jnr as his older mentor/sidekick - now that's a caper movie I could really get behind.

Hope you're feeling better UV, no errors that I could see.

chica said...

No errors UV, great post!

Love reading about the process and Jake's involvement, he's a producer! UMP sounds more and more like a thriller/caper, love the comparison to Damon's character in Bourne.

bobbyanna said...

This is wonderful stuff, UV! You did just fine. Feel Better. I was out of sorts and woke up around 3:30 AM! Mow I'm feeling like I need to go back to sleep.

I have to Netflix Treasure of Sierra Madre. Haven't seen it in a while. This project sounds SO interesting. Delighted he's producing. It sounds like a caper/thriller with elements of comedy and of course a love story.
I decided to watch Zodiac last night, so I am definitely in a Jake/RD,Jr. frame of mind, AgentK!

They seem to like his eyes...:)

chica said...

Forgot to add that not only do I love the Bourne series but I love Treasure of the Sierra Madre and Lawrence of Arabia too! I remember Jake having a production Co. called Nine Stories.

Would love for RDJ to be in this now to cast the love interest!

Hope you feel better UV.

Shondra said...

Wow, this is great! Kinberg sounds like he is a big fan of Jake. This sounds huge, i'm really excited about this and I have my fingers crossed that UMP is finally launched in early 2010.

Feel better UV!

UltraViolet said...

Feeling better today, thanks everyone!

I'd love to see Jake and RDJ together again - excellent idea, Agent K. I have a vague memory of RDJ being linked to some kind of sci fi moon project, though. Maybe even with Reese. Am I imagining that?

Hee, Bobbyanna - they do seem enamored of Jake's eyes. And can we blame them?

I have to confess that I've never seen Treasure if the Sierra Madre or Lawrence of Arabia. I can't imagine slogging through TotSM, but I have always meant to see LoA.

office of nancy pelosi said...

This is shaping up to be more than a man going to the moon flick! I love that Jake is a producer for this.

What wonderful words from Kinberg in describing Jake

You were not imagining the Sci-fi movie with Reese and RDJ, I forgot the name of it but it was rumored earlier in the year.

Glad to hear you are feeling better!

FluorescentLamp said...

It's gratifying to read, from people who actually know him, what a lot of us have long thought, that Jake has an innate kindness and goodness. There seems to be a shortage of that in this world.

josie said...

What a fascinating read, had no idea that Liman has been attached to this project since 1997. It would be awesome if everything comes together for an early 2010 filming. It sounds a lot more interesting and exciting then when I first heard about it.

Innate goodness, what a perfect and wonderful description of Jake.

He looks incredible in the Jarhead photos and so do Peter and Jamie!

UltraViolet said...

Glad you liked the photos, Josie. Something about that set really appeals to me, as you can probably tell by thew picture on the main GB page :)

And FL, it is gratifying, isn't it? Especially when so much unkindness follows Jake. I never tire of hearing people's impressions of him. And coming from people who work with him, it's even better.

I hope these 30Ninjas folks keep the observations coming!

bobbyanna said...

I never said how much I love the series of pictures you used in this post, UV. He looks sexy and angelic all at once!

There is something special about Jake that just shines thru. We get glimpses of that kindness from time to time,I think.

I'm remembering a picture of Jake with Susan Sarandon's youngest boy, when Jake was helping him fix his shirt, they were at the ceremony for Susan getting her "star" I think. Anyway, Jake was just connecting with the little kid and they both looked like pure joy. Sorry if I sound maudlin or something.

suvee said...

Glad you're feeling better, UV. Thanks for this great post!

I really enjoyed reading this background on UMP...... so interesting to get this glimpse into its inner workings.

I think he has an innate kindness to him, as a person and as an actor. And what’s interesting about that is when you play against that he becomes even more interesting....

I loved reading that...... 'cause I totally agree! I'm dying to see him play against type..... maybe UMP will give him that opportunity.

And of course, as others have mentioned, it's especially meaningful to have our impressions of Jake's good character confirmed by people who are in a position to know. :)

Such exciting and fantastic news about UMP.

I love hearing how involved Jake is (producer!) and how respected he is by those he works with.

Great interview, great news, great sightings of Jake and Reese's kids from MV, J&R in Philly, etc, etc.

Glad you are feeling better, UV.
I have been sick with a very bad cold/cough - sucks to have a summer cold :( - and this helped a lot. :D

UltraViolet said...

Ugh, get real, I hear ya. My cold is almost gone, mercifully. Hope you feel better soon.

Missed Ang on Colbert - I'll have to try to catch a repeat. I can't imagine the chemistry there.

I hope this doesn't mean the event was ruined for Jake, Reese and the kids.

On a lighter note, vote for Jakein the shirtless hunk category.

Sadly, he's up against RPattz, so even though there's no real comparison, Jake will probably lose.

UltraViolet said...

Oh, and Bobbyanna, I know what you mean about those photos of Jake. I don't think you were being maudlin at all.

I just reread that Facebook entry and I kind of feel bad for the photographer. I mean, obviously he shouldn't have sold the photos - especially the ones of the kids. But I can see how it would be hard to resist.

I feel bad for everyone involved, I guess. And I feel bad for enjoying the photos!

Sneak peek of PoP at the D23 Expo

I am looking forward to the Moon project more and more, and love the Jake pics UV, as for the photographer I feel bad for him in a way because I loved the pics but then again he shouldn't have sold them. Just my opinion.

The more I hear about UMP the more excited I get, and Jake is one of the producers!!! It's great to hear how much Jake is liked and admired, i love reading about that.

Jake looks so yummy in the Jarhead premiere pics, a few of them I don't remember seeing, thanks UV!

How unfortunate about the MV photographer, but I loved seeing those photos. Like you said UV, I hope it didn't ruin the event for them and make them think twice about participating again.

Thanks for the link to the D23expo anon!

I'm glad you are feeling better UV and take care of your cold get real.

Kind of OT Canadian model gets Google to unmask a nasty blogger

Legal ruling will force Internet search giant to reveal identify of blogger who posted derogatory comments

A Canadian model has won a landmark case against Google Inc. that could strip away some of the anonymity provided by the Web, making people who post offensive blogs, videos or tweets more responsible for their defamatory statements.

Please delete UV/FL if you feel this is not appropriate.

bobbyanna said...

Good morning, all! Glad all the ailing people are feeling better! :)

Wow. So there is unfortunate fall out from the race...
I never like to see any kids being exploited by the paparazzi. But this guy was hired to shoot the race, so anyone could've bought pictures from him. If some enterprising gossip magazine or blog, bought certain pictures that's one thing. But if he went around soliciting the magazines and blogs, then I don't feel bad for him. I don't think this will ruin it for the future. At least I hope not.

I read about that Google thing. I have mixed feelings, but I lean towards supporting anonymity unless legal boundaries are crossed as in a libel.

extra said...

UMP seems to be moving along which is great news, I think this will be huge. More adventure/thriller than sci-fi. Thrilled that Jake is also a producer on this, would explain his hands on involvement with this film. I really hope they do get to start filming this soon. That blog is great, i'm bookmarking it!

If that photographer was invited to take pictures of the race, he should have asked if it was ok to sell the pics. I don't know to much about MV but I hear that they don't like that sort of thing there.

I'm with you on the google thing too bobbyanna.

FluorescentLamp said...

If I'm not mistaken, the photos of in question from the Roadrace were those of revered photographer Peter Simon, longtime Vineyard resident and Carly's brother. Ooops.

extra said...

Carly's brother? He lives on MV and I don't think he would sell w/o at least asking first.

FluorescentLamp said...

Although maybe the pics were those of Jack McCoy. Peter Simon took pics of Jake/Doug Liman and Jake drinking the sport drink. Yeah, now that I researched I see those were McCoy pics sold to Splash.

UltraViolet said...

There was a message from Jack McCoy, now deleted, where he apologized (mentioning a few people, including "Jake") and said he'd written a letter to Jake's publicist, as well. He ended with a sort of Woe is me "I guess I can't even be a Friend of the Chilmark Road Race now."

agent_krycek said...

Sadly, he's up against RPattz, so even though there's no real comparison,

Seriously don't get the Robert Patterson thing, he's got an odd shaped face and looks like he might well smell of stale burgers, Jake always looks like he'd smell lovely :p

I don't blame the photographer for selling photos of Jake, but selling the ones of the kids was well out of order

get real said...

Thanks UV...I am still sick...oy..

Anyway, really sorry to hear about the selling of the pics without Jack McCoy's knowledge. I hope he does work with the race next year and that Jake and Co. will continue a great tradition. :/

I am with everyone who is getting excited about UMP. It sounds like it is shaping up to be a really great project.

FluorescentLamp said...

Anyway, really sorry to hear about the selling of the pics without Jack McCoy's knowledge.

get real, I believe those pics were sold with McCoy's FULL knowledge. He was the one making money off them.

I was totally bugged by him selling those pics to Splash then and still am.

Yeah, get out the tiny violins, Chilmark Road Race FB doesn't want to be his friend anymore. Boohoo.

I don't get the Patterson thing either, he looks like he smells among other things.

Reading Jack McCoy's facebook it sounds like he is trying to blame someone else for selling the pictures, shame, shame Jack!

Congratulations to Marc Jacobs and his SO! I remember Jake and Reese alnog with Jacob's at Kate Hudson's Halloween party 2 years ago!

OT:

lastight I went to the screening of Renee Zellweger film My one and Only. George Hamilton is listed as a producer and the character Renne plays is based on his mother. It's a charming film that captures the time (1953) well and Renne is wonderful in the role. Great supporting cast including Kevin Bacon as her wayward husband. There are 2 reasons why i'm mentioning this: One go see it when it opens tomorrow and this bit I found:

http://www.hamptons.com/the-arts/on-the-screen/8669/screening-of-my-one-and-only-with-rene.html

The was a screening of the film in the Hamptons. Several months ago this same friend that I went to the screening with and who vacations in the Hamptons swore that she heard that Reese was going to buy the Blue Parrot restauraunt in the Hamptons with Bon Jovi. I said are you sure and she said that she was positive! I just thought it was a rumor and forgot about it. In the link they mentioned that Renee was the one that bought the Blue Parrot win Jovi and Ron Pearlman not Reese!!

I just remember that sighting in London of Jake and Renee and the posters here really thought that it was Reese and they got them mixed up.

I know that they are both blonde, southern and small but I just don't see it!

http://www.hamptons.com/the-arts/on-the-screen/8669/screening-of-my-one-and-only-with-rene.html

How can you see what Jack McCoy says on
his facebook page? Do you have to be his friend?

extra said...

You just have to have a Facebbok account. I'm not friended to him and I was able to read it.

Yeah, McCoy is full of it.

I've heard great things about Renee and her new movie too Chica! That's funny about the Renee and Reese mix-up but there are some people that say that they are similar, I don't see it either.

bobbyanna said...

"... just remember that sighting in London of Jake and Renee and the posters here really thought that it was Reese and they got them mixed up."

I don't remeber this. Are you saying Jake was in London with Renee and ppl thought it was Reese? This must have been when he was doing PoP ?

chica said...

It was a blog sighting of Jake in London while he was filming Pop. They said that they saw Jake and Renee having breakfast, it was posted here. I think, but i'm not sure that Renee was actually in the US filming and there were pap pics of Reese arriving at LAX a few days later so I and others thought that the blogger who I think was German got Reese mixed up with Renee and it was actually Reese having breakfast with Jake!

UltraViolet said...

Can someone post what Jack McCoy said on Facebook, please? I can't see it.

And now for the opposite of McCoy's behavior. From a story about how celebrities fit in on the Vineyard:

When then-undercover couple Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal strolled holding hands and playing with her children on private Lucy Vincent Beach here the summer before last, Jeffrey Ross debated whether to snap a photo of the stars with his cellphone.

"I could have sold it to the tabloids for hundreds of thousands of dollars," says the regular Martha's Vineyard summer visitor and former TV production executive. But of course, he didn't.

Damn Jeffrey Ross and his ethics!

No, seriously, it's great that he didn't do it. Really. I mean it. Sincerely.

lawgoddess said...

I'm sort of conflicted about the race pictures being sold.

On the one hand , it was a family event and the children should have been able to enjoy it without photographs of them all over the Net. But I loved the pictures, particularly of Ava looking so proud and Jake looking like a happy and proud step-dad.

I think the photographer took pictures of everyone who crossed the finish line, but maybe he should have kept Jake and the kids off his website, and not sold them to a larger group. That way Jake and Reese could have bought pictures for the kids if they wanted, but there would be some privacy.

It's a tough issue, but I have to admit I treasure that picture of Jake taking Ava's picture.

extra said...

Here is his post UV, he deleted the part about sending an apology to Jake's PR:

Chilmark Road Race: Most of you are aware that photos of one of our participants along with photos of his girl friend's kids appeared in the tabloids, both print and online. They were sold without our knowledge by the photographer that we invited to take race photo...s. He works with our support and endorsement, and for him to sell the photos, was in our opinion, just plain wrong. He will not be asked back next year.

Interesting USA today article about celebrities on MV which makes what McCoy did even more tacky although I admit that I enjoyed looking at the pictures, bu for him to blame someone else is just wrong.

PS: I remember the few pics of Jake and Reese and the kids in '07 on MV not together of course but I do remember the blog sightings of them.

bobbyanna said...

"Damn Jeffrey Ross and his ethics!

No, seriously, it's great that he didn't do it. Really. I mean it. Sincerely"

Yeah. Me, too, UV. :)

OT: Just looking at all the pictures on this thread again, and my goodness, Peter O'Toole was a beautiful man back in the day. That picture really captures him. I love that movie, Lawrence of Arabia.

UltraViolet said...

I can see that, extra. That's from the CRR organizers and is what I linked to last night. I thought you and chica were referring to a post on McCoy's own page.

I saw the now-deleted post and referred to it last night. But he didn't blame other people for selling the pictures.

It was merely an apology to Jake and some other named people who I assume were part of the CRR team. He said he also sent a letter of apology to Jake's publicist, which he hoped Jake would accept. And then he sort of whined that he couldn't be a fan of CRR anymore.

suvee said...

Lawgoddess, I'm conflicted, too. I seesaw between giddiness and discomfort.

Selfishly, I love seeing photos like the one of Jake proudly taking Ava's picture at the Chilmark Road Race. But knowing that some of these invasions of privacy anger or upset him/them definitely diminishes my enjoyment.

Who knew that being a fan could be so ethically ambiguous? :)

UltraViolet said...

Hee - I knew you'd understand, Bobbyanna :)

I originally had Jake pics to go with the photos from Bourne, LoA and TotSM. But that Peter O'Toole picture was so good, I wanted the perfect Jake pic to match it and I didn't have time to find it. I cropped this one, but there's something a little off with it.

extra said...

Sorry UV my bad! I can't see his facebook page either,I guess you have to be friended.

UltraViolet said...

No problem, extra. Just wanted to make sure we're all on the same page, so to speak :)

And LG and suvee, the ethics are tricky. Being a fan is haaaard.

Wait, now I sound like Jack McCoy.

Jake being one of the producers of UMP is great news. This will give him a chance not only a say in developing his own character but he will also have a hand in other decisions like distribution, casting, etc.

I like the addition of Greer to the cast of L&D.

The trailer for Avatar hs been making the rounds and it will get a big sneak peak today on select screens, 16 minutes. The trailer was a bit dissapointing considering all the hoopla. The standard CG effects IMO and as others pointed out it looks like a cross between Furngully and Tghe Abyss, another Cameron flick.

Wasn't Jake's name attached to Avatar at one point or am I just imagining?

I really think that Reese twitter is a fake. I just don't think she would do something like that.

Anonymous said...

All the Reese twitters are fake and I think they all have been deleted. A few fake Jake ones as well, I think one has been deleted but they may be a couple of fake ones still out there.

The Reese taking the kids to a diner were not "reese" tweets but from somone in the Philly area. There were also a few tweets last nightand Reese, Paul and Owen were filming, rare since it was a Saturday.

Last Jake tweets had him in L.A. as of Friday I think but there was a tweet of him in Philly as well, don't know if that was true or one of those mistaken idenity tweets or a someone just joking or making a random comment.

Anonymous said...

oh I get it. I thought it was the "Reese" on Twitter saying she went there. Don't get me started on that person. It goes against everything Reese has ever said about being private and just living her life. I'm surprised anyone believes she would voluntarily put information out using something like Twitter. People posting sightings of her probably freak her out enough.

LOL!! With all these "Anons," it seems like one person is talking to themselves. Trying to follow the conversation makes me dizzy, and I didn't have that far to go! :)

Sometimes it's easier to get access to a site on a weekend or in the middle of the night, or maybe they are trying to finish something up ahead of schedule. Anyway, from Ruby's website, it does seem very "Happy Days" or as you put it, "very Pleasantville."

Well, I think Jake certainly merits a higher ranking than #7. But I am quite fond of Mr. Franco, so I'm not too upset that he came in at #1. He was just so adorable (and sexy) in Pineapple Express.

No, the real insult is R. Pattinson...... he wouldn't even make my top 100 list!

I miss photos of Atticus!:

DishofSalt: Good celeb sighting today. Jake Gyllenhaal having brunch in Venice while his german shepard waited patiently on the sidewalk. good doggie

I don't mind Franco coming in #1 either, I'm a big fan. I still don't get the Patterson thing.

Hi((( Monica))), how are you doing?

That's a great site, thanks for the link.

Jake and Warren are pretty good. But it doesn't beat my Polo Lounge celeb duo - Jim Nabors and Pat Morita. Now that was excitement!

Linking just cause of Jake ...oh yeah and of course I'm an Obama fan. I hope he and his family can have fun and relax.
It looks he's going to be really grey by next year...but I know he's working hard...

Interesting article sass. Thanks for the link.

I love James Franco. I will even go so far as to say there is something about him in that picture that reminds me of Heath.

I will even say I am glad he is in the top three. I am happy for him. But honestly? I think Jake should have been #1. I do. I do not "get" the Pattinson phenom at all. I think next years little polls and contests will have different outcomes, yes? :)

That's exciting, Reese playing Stevie Nicks. I'd be there in a minute. :)

Hi Sass!! I hopr the President and his family enjoy their stay on MV, thanks for the link!

Bobbyanna, Reese's movie so far has been filming in and around campus/Drexel. Lot's of students around even during and Summer and school is about to start soon so Brooks needs access to areas that probably will be a problam later on. If i'm not mistaken she worked a Sunday right after the MV race, I remember the tweets/sightings.

(((( Monica))). You are right, wehre is Bardem on that list!!!
