Boston Magic

Did Jake Gyllenhaal have a flashback to his Texas Longhorns days? Or is that the international signal for "sweep?"

Jake watched the Boston Celtics trounce the Orlando Magic in an NBA playoff game on Saturday night in Boston. He refused to choose between the Lakers and the Celtics, but did compliment the city's fans:

We know from Jake's Disney Radio stint that basketball is his preferred sport, but a Saturday night game, even a Celtics' blowout, isn't necessarily Jake's idea of the perfect weekend:

“I love hanging out with my friends. I love playing sports, being active, being outside. And my ideal weekend would be going for really long bike rides, I love going out into nature, maybe going for a hike. And eating really good food, because I like eating food that I grow.” The star added jokingly, “…and also jumping from building to building!” in reference to the action-packed “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.”

Well, he did get to hang out with friends! But I don't think Jake used any parkour moves to get to or from his courtside seats.

In case you weren't watching MTV Saturday morning, Stephanie uploaded Jake and Gemma's appearance on the 10 on Top show:

Speaking of Stephanie, she's famous! Stephanie is quoted in this somewhat annoying NY Post article about Jake's "new " image.

Yay, Stephanie - for being quoted and for not pigeonholing Jake!

Finally, an apparent outtake from the New York Times Performers of the Year photoshoot:

The Brother Lode

EpixHD, who gave us this wonderful video of Jake doing a promo, just posted about 200 Brothers stills, as well as new video interviews with Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire. Are you supposed to find prisoners hot?

These are just gorgeous shots of Jake. I love the one with Tommy and Sam graffiti, though I don't think we get a shot of that in the movie.

Jake had great rapport with the two young actresses playing his nieces, and this snowman scene was really fun.

Sadly, this scene is not in the movie. I would have liked to see more of Player Tommy.

And just because:

A couple of videos - in the first, the trio discuss getting into character:

Natalie and Jake talk about big vs. small. Budgets, people!

Though he doesn't talk about Jake specifically, Roger Ebert gave Brothers 3.5 stars. Even better, Salon raved (justifiably) about Jake:

Jake Gyllenhaal shines in an undeniably grown-up movie about love and loss in the shadow of Afghanistan. ...

Of the three leads, Gyllenhaal gives the finest performance. He's jittery and charismatic -- his eyes shift uncomfortably, as if he were constantly looking for escape. Among Tommy's problems is the fact that he's never been the favored son. His father, an ex-Marine (played by a gruff, angular-looking Sam Shepard), approves of Sam's courage and sense of responsibility and derides Tommy as the fuckup he is. When Shepard and Gyllenhaal appear in a scene together, the air around them is charged -- it's as if the searching, vulnerable quality in Tommy's eyes registers as a taunt in the manly-man world of his father.

The chemistry is a lot less charged, unfortunately, between Gyllenhaal and Portman. Gyllenhaal is superb at channeling his confused feelings into physical awkwardness. ...

Unscripted

Moviefone asked Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire to get together and answer questions submitted by users. Inevitably, hilarity ensues.

It's good to have a laugh at this point :)

Don't miss the three "viral" snippets, especially Number 3, which is a question for Jake:

Family photos

The cast of Brothers, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman and Tobey Maguire, posed for photos over the weekend, at a press conference and later a cocktail party for their move, Brothers.

Here's our first photo of Jake with the two young actresses who play his nieces in the movie.

And the three leads - looks like they get along swimmingly!

Jake is a giant among men:

It Exists!

Finally - set photos from Brothers. It looks great. And by "it," I mean "Jake Gyllenhaal."

Randomosity

Some new pictures of Jake, with Brothers costar Tobey Maguire in Brentwood.

Aww, look at Jake looking at the kidlet!

Just a thought, but perhaps the reason Brothers is scheduled for a 2009 release is the glacial pace at which they seem to be filming. They haven't exactly had a rigorous schedule!

In other randomness, the New York Daily News deemed Jake and Reese:

Hot: Togetherness. Jake Gyllenhaal takes Reese Witherspoon and her kids for a stroll.

I wonder why this story has been presented everywhere as Jake's taking Reese and the kids on a hike? Maybe it was her idea!

Since we got only a solo sighting of Jake this weekend, check out these old but new-to-me encounters. From November:

THIS BLOG'S FIRST-EVER CELEBRITY-SIGHTING
Spotted brunching together at the table next to me this morning at La Note in Berkeley: Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon. They shared a Sunday New York Times as they waited for Berkeley's best breakfast to arrive. ...

Pre-romance, from the 2005 Vanity Fair Oscar party:

Here and there a drone wandered, an unknown face. But for the most part it was a living menagerie of the pages of a glossy magazine. Jake Gyllenhaal, his head shaven, whispered in the ear of Reese Witherspoon, her hair a stripy vanilla-chocolate color.

Of course, as the story notes, Jake left with Kirsten. But maybe there was a hint of a spark? It's a nice image either way :)

I like the mutual touches in this pic. And even though they were allegedly broken up at this point, can you blame Kirsten for wanting to get her hands on Jarhead Jake?

Adding this picture of Maggie and Sidney Lumet from the party. Note Jake in the background:
