360 degrees of odd

With Brothers opening on Friday, director Jim Sheridan has given us some further insight into directing Jake Gyllenhaal:

... Jake is a kind of very - I kind of say Jake is a 360-degree actor. You know, he's watching what's going on 360 degrees, and it's like almost as if his family background, with his mother as a writer and dad as a director, has allowed him to live in the world of movies like a normal person, and he's great, and he's - like anybody who's really talented, they're kind of very odd, you know? I don't mean odd in the bad way. They just - they're alive, and they're not easily malleable, but an easily malleable actor is really a boring actor, you know?

New York Magazine reviewer David Edelstein, gives Sheridan kudos for the job he did with Jake and all the actors.

Empathy must come as naturally as breathing to the Irishman Jim Sheridan, director of My Left Foot, In America, and now the overpoweringly intimate Brothers. Working with screenwriter David Benioff (25th Hour), he skips among three protagonists and emotional states without losing the story’s pulse: Every narrative beat is also a heartbeat. ... Sheridan gets inside his characters’ heads without ever viewing them in isolation: Even separated by continents, no one can move without hitting someone else.

Who could have guessed that the stars who made their names as nerd heroes Peter Parker and Donnie Darko could be so credibly messed-up and volatile? Maguire isn’t big, but his tautness radiates strength. ...

As to the other two leads, Sheridan has gotten the best performances of their young lives. As much as I like Gyllenhaal, I’ve often found him fuzzy, as if he’s wary of losing control. Is that why he’s so affecting here? The dissolute Tommy turns out to be as tightly wound as his older brother, only too scared to focus. He looks pitifully vulnerable as he the supposedly dead Sam’s family and becomes protective. Portman has the kind of role that turns actresses into dullards: the wife who stands and looks stricken at her man (or men) in paroxysms of rage and grief. But she’s so grounded that as the others carry on, your eyes keep drifting to her. Yes, she’s almost unbearably pretty, but it’s her immediacy that keeps you glued to her face.

... Sheridan’s actors work with their intellects fully engaged—and they engage us on levels we barely knew we had.

As we know, the gossip game came full circle yesterday. Let's hope we return to Brothers news today. Please post if you see any noteworthy reviews or interviews.

Center of Attention

Brothers opens on Friday, and the publicity blitz includes articles in the New York Times, the Boston Globe and the San Francisco Chronicle.

From the Toronto Sun feature on Jim Sheridan and the movie, a little glimpse into what it's like to work with Jake Gyllenhaal:

Of Jake Gyllenhaal he says, “He was always real on set, ‘cause he’s always finding something or looking for something. If you were the type of director who just wanted him to hit his mark, I think you’d curtail him in some way that doesn’t get the best out of him. ‘Cause I think he’s a charismatic actor, who’s always the centre of attention. Which drove me crazy for the first few weeks,” says Sheridan, deadpan, “as I wanted to be the centre of attention.”

Oh, Jim - face it: You never had a chance!

Unfortunately, Jake is NOT the center of much of the media attention for Brothers. Let's hope there are some articles and interviews as the week progresses. Looking forward to more reviews, as well.

Brothers/Jake's On A Train

This is the new Jake Gyllenhaal norm - news on not one not two but three movies today. Apparently someone at Lionsgate finally saw the "Promote Brothers" entry on the company To Do list. And not a moment too soon. The movie opens December 4th, and there's a new TV spot that many people seem to have seen Sunday night. Courtesy of Movie Web:

The official website has been uploaded with some new stills:

The promo people aren't completely clueless, as they have featured Jake's shower scene on the site:

Unfortunately, the site moves very slowly - at least in Safari. So it's a somewhat frustrating experience to navigate. But Jake is worth it. Now they just need some more material to, er, flesh it out.

You can also view two videos from the Brothers set. Sadly, neither one involves Jake. The first is a set up of Tobey in a truck; the second involves Tobey, Natalie and the kids around the dinner table.

It's always interesting to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse. Let's hope there are more of these, featuring Jake.

The was a screening of Brothers today at the Director's Guild. Not a lot of info coming out yet, but a few positive tweets:

Just saw Jim Sheridan's BROTHERS. Reeeeeally great.

Just saw "Brothers." So powerful, like "Hurt Locker."

From director Jim Sheridan:

Its about communication first and art second. You find out if it's art when you're dead."

While we look to the immediate future for Brothers, we've also gotten word that Jake is in talks to star in Source Code for director Duncan Jones.

Jake Gyllenhaal is in negotiations to star in sci-fi thriller "Source Code" for Vendome Pictures and The Mark Gordon Co.

Duncan Jones will direct and Mark Gordon will produce with Vendome’s CEO Philippe Rousselet and Jordan Wynn. Production is slated to begin during the first quarter. ...

"Source Code" centers on a soldier who wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it.

According to Slash Film (warning: spoilers!), In the first scene, a man named Colter - Gyllenhaal’s character - wakes up on a train headed through the New Jersey countryside. He has no idea how he got there and nobody he speaks to can offer him any clues, though he is told that, to his surprise, he has taken this train every day for the last three months.

Jones recently directed the well-received movie Moon, starring Sam Rockwell:

Jones tweeted a while back that he had a meeting with Jake:

Also had a painfully early breakfast meeting with Jake Gylenhall. A proper, truly lovely gent! Very much want to work with him.

Was a fan before meeting him, even more so afterwards

And Jones seems excited for the chance to work with Jake now:

its a good step up in budget and ambition too. Im excited to work with Jake G too. cool guy. I like him

Thanks to Carla, here's a script review for The Source. The premise sounds tense and exciting. I look forward to hearing more about it and seeing the finished product. And I hope Duncan Jones tweets his way through the production.

And a bonus for all you six-degrees of separation fans. Jake is now one degree of separation from David Bowie.

Finally, we wouldn't want to leave Prince of Persia out of the post. Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer are starting to post answers to fan questions submitted through Facebook. Nothing too exciting so far. But I think they delivered enough excitement last week that we can be patient.

Party Time

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon attended a pre-Golden Globes party at the Buffalo Club in Santa Monica last night. We were breathlessly awaiting the big hair reveal at the GGs, but Jake gave us an early peek at his unhatted self.

There's also news that Jake might be out and about tonight:

PRE-GLOBES GALA: Even celebs who may not be Golden Globes-bound will don glamorous duds this weekend. A spate of stars — including Tobey Maguire, Demi Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal and Sting — were expected Saturday at the Art of Elysium's annual charity gala.

The swanky soiree, held at a former cathedral in downtown Los Angeles, will include dinner, music, a fashion show and special honors for Eva Mendes and Jim Sheridan.

Mendes was chosen to receive the inaugural Spirit of Elysium award for her work with the organization over the past two years. Sheridan, the event's co-chair, was to be presented with the Visonary Award before passing the torch to next year's honoree, Shepard Fairey.

Founded in 1997, the Art of Elysium encourages actors, artists and musicians to share their time and talent at artistic workshops for seriously ill children. Last year's gala raised over $800,000.

The event is hosted by Ryan Kavanaugh, one of the producers of Brothers. And you can watch it online. Scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm PDT/10:00pm EDT on CelebCast TV.

One assumes Jake and Jim will be dressed in slightly more formal attire.

Clearly, Jake and Eva have prior experience with golden globes, er, awards. So they should have fun tonight. Keep your eyes up, Jake!

Finally, some video of Jake and Reese's post-People's Choice Awards dinner. Or date, if you prefer:

Ignore the inane commentary and focus on the pretty.

Sneak peek?

New photos of Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon at an L.A. studio yesterday. Jake's mother and Jim Sheridan, the director of Jake's upcoming movie, Brothers, were also there. An advance screening perhaps?

There's word from a poster on a Natalie Portman board that there was a sneak of the movie in Las Vegas, and that the film got excellent ratings across the board. With all the Nailed drama and the Prince of Persia news, it's good reminder that Brothers will be out next. I can't wait!

It looks like it was a bright, sunny, California day. Hope everyone enjoyed the show, if that's what they were all doing there!

Oh, and a friendly reminder now that we're in Brothers territory again - no spoilers in your posts, please!
