He's almost as thin as in NC, particularly in this picture

https://www.facebook.com/123171911046475/photos/pcb.1040462179317439/1040461405984183/?type=3&theater

It's not far away from Bloom, he is way too close. Look at his legs, they are skeletal. I hope he'll be back in shape in few months. But I like beard is gone.

Darcy said...

I like both the beardy and non-beardy looks because they make sense, considering the type of character(s) Jake is playing, and I wanted to share my excitement for these NA location pics, thinking on GB people would understand. But my intentions were hijacked.

He's not close to NC skinny. His legs could never be skeletal because he has famously strong thighs. Jake is currently lean, with a very low percentage of body fat, but he still has his muscles, look at the size of his biceps 5 days ago, the veins show that he's working out.

In preparation for SP, his face was bearded but his body was just as lean. Then he shaved, got a buzz cut, we didn't see much of his face but look at his cheekbones and his body fully clothed. With the clothes off, it turned out he had amazing muscles, we've all seen SP.

If Tom Ford finds a cinematic reason for Tony to take off his clothes, you'll see he's not skinny.

Something else needs to be addressed. Nowhere - not on twitter, AW or other places where people are usually mean - nobody complains that he's skeletal, must be sick or on drugs, or other ridiculously absurd statements. Because by now everybody knows Jake's method. Everybody knows that, for him, getting in character is business as usual. Ironically, the only place of exaggeration is here, a blog where Jake is dearly loved. I feel like I woke up in an alternate reality where the world is upside down: blogs where Jake is usually bashed have no problem with his not-so-drastic weight loss, but on GB, a Jake haven, some people are freaking out.

It's not my intention to attack anyone but to me the "I hope he'll be back in shape in few months" sounds like fake worrying. Jake recovered from NC weight loss and didn't just get back to his regular size, he reached the best shape of his life for SP. It's a given that, after a significantly less drastic weight loss, he will get back to his standard fit soon. We all know he will be fine, there's no need for "I hope", which sounds like a recrimination, like someone having a hissy fit because Jake doesn't do what fans want him to, in terms of movie choices, methods, appearance.

It's his life, his career, his body, his movies. He's perfectly capable to take care of it all. He will continue to chose the projects HE likes and approach the characters HIS way. An approach that brought him the kind of respect he didn't have for the most part of his career. He's been a gifted actor from the get go (October Sky) and yet for a decade he was considered mostly a decent actor with pretty eyes (lets NOT remember the BBM Heath vs. Jake comments and reviews). His current "method", immersion, artistic rebirth, whatever you call it, finally placed him on the versatile character actors list. He's not going to stop doing what he's doing.

Sal -- I enjoyed A Single Man. I thought it was beautifully made and both Colin Firth and Julianne Moore gave great performances. I believe it's on Netflix right now, if you have that. Definitely worth a watch, imo.

I wish Tom Hanks would break out his letterhead stationary and write Jake a note on the the eventual issues that come with repeated weight losses and gains for roles. (And maybe send it on to Christian Bale and McCoughnahey, too!) Even with a doctor's and nutritionist's guidance, it can cause havoc on the body's systems down the road. What can I say, I worry for Jake's adrenal glands. ;)

I will say it shocks me how much slimmer he is from the Everest press junkets in late-August-mid-September, and even his Conan appearance earlier this month. Whatever does he do to lose it that quick? I do think he's one of those people where when he loses weight of any kind it shows in his cheeks first (so much "expendable" fat there)and that's why his eyes look so gaunt whenever he loses any weight.

I hope the Edison/Westinghouse biopic he's doing opposite Cumberbatch doesn't require any weight shenanigans. Movie Gods, don't let Westinghouse be either sickly nor over-indulgent. ;)

Anonymous said...

...I will add I don't think he's anywhere near Nightcrawler emaciation. His shoulders, arms and legs looks to me at about "Love and Other Drugs"-era level. I just think as he's aged, any weight loss hits him in the face first.

And to address Darcy's excellent point--I do wonder if his method acting weight loss work is going to lose its impressiveness if he does it for every role. Seems like the law of diminishing returns after awhile. Early on, it's seems like dedicated technique; repeated too often, it comes off like a superficial "trick"...

"I wish Tom Hanks would break out his letterhead stationary and write Jake a note" why not Jake wrote him letter, too :-) once.

Everybody knows how he looked like before and it's his career. Getting in shape wish is natural, no one means it negatively. Every sane person must see he has NCish look, why to deny it. People are not better fans, just because they are blind and deny what's obvious.

Unknown said...

I do not know, maybe we overanalyze too much,as Jake fans. Is he thinner than usual? Yes. But i don't think a regular viewer will think, "Wow, he looks as sick as in Nightcrawler" , it is not like he went full transformation,at least for what i've seen in these photos

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Ann. I might give it a go this weekend.

I think Jake looks healthy, and we probably don't need to analyse a few photos to this extent.

A lucky fan got to meet him on the NA set! https://twitter.com/alxirene

LOL! I hope he will! ;)

I can't believe we're having this weight discussion again... :(

You might have a point there, Anon. But I agree with Darcy: it's his career, his roles, his choices.

I still think he doesn't look anything like Lou. That's when he was terrifyingly thin. He has lost some weight now, but nowhere near as much, thank goodness.

bobbyanna said...

I think a lot of his look is affected by the length of his hair. Perception. His face seems to look longer and leaner with both the absense of the beard and the longish hair. I didb't see Lou I saw a tiny bit of Jamie Randall. :) In the trailer and the photos for Demolition, he has shorter hair and a rounder fuller face. So IMO it's a combination of stuff.

Just as an example, I noticed something when I was watching The Patriot for the umpteenth time a while ago. We all know Heath Ledger is easily 6'2". But Mel Gibson is muck closer to 5'10".
But the length of Heath's coat, and the height of his boots, along with camera angles, etc. and in most scenes either one or both was sitting down, gave the impression that there wasn't to much diffeence in their height. The last thing Mel Gibson would want is for someone to tower over him. LOL!

I think Harvey really screwed up with his release dates. So many films that were considered huge Oscar contenders aren't doing well at all. Steve Jobs is failing at the box office. If Southpaw was released this fall, Jake might have had a better chance. I know he's still campaigning but I don't know if it'll do any good.

Those pics from The Wrap look good, wonder when we'll get to see the interview.

Anonymous said...

Release date isn't only up to Harvey. There is a lot involved to scheduling. Maybe the release date was the best of a bad lot. There is always something. When does the Rocky movie come out?

Tweety said...

I was startled when I first saw the recent on set pics of Jake, but I don't think he looks as emaciated as he looked for NC. He obviously can loose and gain weight easily and I assume that he is under a doctors watch.

As much as I liked SP bad especially Jake's performance, I didn't think Oscar worthy as I did with NC IMO.

Monica said...

When does the Rocky movie come out?

November 25.

Bradley's film was not well received. Although Southpaw was not well received, the performance was highly praised and the role is baity + Jake was snubbed last year, because of it, I think Harvey is starting a campaign to Jake.

"Bradley's film was not well received. "

I didn't think Burn was out yet. Audiences have been seeing the opposite of what the critics love. There is still a significant amount of awards films yet to be released. It's safe to say the awards season will be more of the same fodder, the predictable although last year having Jake and NC received so well all the way up until Oscars.

Cooper I think is going for supporting in Joy. Leo has already began his campaign for Gold and if it keeps the gold away from Redmayne or anyone in biopic then go Leo.

Anonymous said...

Fassbender still has Macbeth which is also a Weinstein movie. so time will tell how much effort Weinstein puts into Jake. Macbeth will not a be large release, that alone could help it look better to the Academy since it does not take a lot box office to impress. Critics are doing their best not to see Steve Jobs as bust, tauting an A- cinema score as a sign of success. I believe Southpaw had an A- or better.

Monica said...

I didn't expect Steve Jobs would be a flop. But I think it will receive nomination for best picture, actor, supporting actress and screenplay.
Eddie Redmayne was overshadowed by Alicia Vikander, the film was also not well received as expected. I think he will get nomination for best actor, but he's not the favorite.
I think it will be Fassy vs Leo.

Anonymous said...

Southpaw had an A cinema score.

Weinstein has no interest in Macbeth, even less campaigning for it.

Anonymous said...

Sadly, Cinemascore doesn't have much bearing on award season, just as box office numbers don't often reflect film quality. And "grown-up" movies just aren't doing well in the box office this year, no matter their reviews. Southpaw suffered from it just as Steve Jobs is--it's a franchise-driven, youth-geared marketplace in films right now, and films for 'adults" get unfairly passed by.

RE: campaigning--All those studios and publicists barter with each other, giving up one thing to get leverage the next year. It's all networking and sucking up. Steve Jobs is obviously Fassbender's ticket to an Oscar nod, not Macbeth, so I'm sure Weinstein made a deal with Universal and Scott Rudin to not do any campaign for Micheal in Macbeth so full attention could be on Jobs.

That said, I think Harvey strong-armed Fox Searchlight into pushing back "Demolition" so Jake's only Oscar bid would be for Southpaw. I assume Harvs thought it would be a distraction from Southpaw press and award campaigning. Was he right? Maybe, but I wonder if Demolition might in fact have been the stronger awards bait if it had been released in fall. Southpaw's summer release and tepid reviews aren't helping it with buzz this award season. But Demolition could have had festival circuit hype, and a release more in line with "prestige" films.

And I tend to think Fox Searchlight runs a more subtle, but better tolerated, award season campaigns. As of late, Weinstein Company's award pushes are so blantant and heavy-handed--it's an industry joke. For every campaign they do well, there are three or four that fizzle out from overexposure.

I really sort of feel any dearth of nominations for Southpaw and Jake can be directly tied to Weinstein's mishandling of the film. They released it at wrong time, and Harvey was just way too early in his "Jake was snubbed for "Nightcrawler;" we'll make for it with "Southpaw!"' speech and screening at Cannes. It just set an icky tone for the campaign.

In a totally different vein--I had hoped with one-two punch of Everest and Southpaw and working with Taran Killam might get Jake to host SNL this season, but it's looking more and more unlikely, at least this winter...

Piruleta said...

We are making it sound like Southpaw was a flop when it wasn't. The movie did well but it doesn't have the support of positive reviews that can make a flop like Steve Jobs survive through out the Oscar season. I wish that Weinstein would let this go, first because his campaigns are atrocious and I don't want this to look like a desperate move for Jake. And second, because he can say whatever he wants but I'm sure he was happy that Jake was snubbed this year.

Anonymous said...

It wouldn't surprise me if Eddie Redmayne just misses getting a nomination this year, and nothing is guaranteed for Johnny Depp, eveb though he did a good job. I think the ones who are sure for nominations right now are Leo DeCaprio and Michael Fassbender, so Jake hasn't been snubbed yet. The Supporting Actor field is very competitive this year, and even so, I feel like Forest Whitaker is a contender.

BlueJean said...

Isn't it a bit early for all this speculation about the Oscars? When are the nominations announced? Most of the time I don't keep track of that sort of thing, I'm sorry.

And I don't care what anybody says: 'Southpaw' wasn't a flop. I loved Jake in it and most reviews praised his performance - but I don't think he'll get nominated, sadly.

"I don't want this to look like a desperate move for Jake."

Agreed. I'm sure Jake doesn't want that for himself either.

Ann said...

Sadly, it's not too early for Oscar talk. October - December is prime time for speculation and for Oscar films to be released so even though nominations aren't until January (I think) the speculation and campaigning has already begun.
