Video mash

As Jake Gyllenhaal films Nocturnal Animals and does some light awards promotion for Southpaw, the DVD comes out in the U.S.

There's not much other news after the avalanche of Southpaw and Everest. So let's take a look at some old videos floating around. I hadn't seen this one before - Jake and Jason Clarke discuss Everest:

They had good chemistry in interviews. Would love to have seen more promo from them together.

All of Jake's movie kisses:

We've posted these or others like them before, but it's fun to revisit - Celeb life, Parts 1 and 2:

MS: Right now, I’m shooting a Tom Ford movie called Nocturnal Animals. It’s a beautiful script. Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams are the stars. I’m such a big fan of Jake. We’ve been itching to do something together. He’s great in everything he does.

I don’t know when it’ll be out, we’re shooting it right now. I’m back to work tomorrow.

After seeing Our Brand Is Crisis in Toronto, I have even lower hopes/expectations for the Marathon movie. I hope they surprise me.

This was around a few weeks ago, but I don't think it was ever posted here. Very young Jake and Jason Segel in a production of West Side Story.

What was the first movie Jake ever saw in a theater?

Based on these new pictures I guess that Tom Ford hasn't changed the end of "Tony & Susan".

Hagen said...

Deadline: True Blood‘s Kristin Bauer Van Straten has joined the cast of Nocturnal Animals. Van Straten is playing Samantha, Susan’s opinionated boss.

I don't remember that Susan had a boss in "Tony and Susan". Tom Ford probably embellished Amy Adams' part in "Nocturnal Animals".

Glad the videos are new for some folks :) I haven't gotten the DVD yet. I hear there are deleted scenes. I hope some are with Rachel Macadams.

Good question, anon. Things have been pretty slow around here. The order of what I'd rather see:

1. Nocturnal Animals
2. The Current War
3. The Man Who Made It Snow
4. Okja
5. Stronger

#4 and #5 could easily flip.

What's probably better for Jake:

1. Nocturnal Animals
2. The Current War
3. Okra
4. Stronger
5. The Man Who Made It Snow

In a way, I should put Stronger at #1, as they should film it in Boston, and it will be fun to hear of Jake sightings around town.

I wish all anons would choose a name, so we know who we're talking to.

Amen, BJ! Sadly, it will never happen.

So previous IHJ pics are photoshop?

Nonsense, it just means the perception was wrong. He lost weight but not as much as people made it out to be. I mean, based on the new pics no one would see any weight loss. Baggy or tight clothes, certain angles can alter perception.
It also means that people are quick to criticize, bitch and moan, respond to perceived negative aspects rather than the positive ones.
Case in point: the weight thing drew more than 200 comments on GB. But when UV made a new post with new information alongside throwback videos and highschool theatre pics, the silence was deafening until Unknown came up with a fun idea.

I have 2 lists.

Based on these movies' potential (or prospects):

1. Nocturnal Animals (good stories; better characters / promising stylish director / big Cannes pre-sale / good buzz / Focus)

2. Stronger (touching real-life story; strong characters / highs&lows director with bad buzz after "Crisis" / Lionsgate)

3. Man Who Made It Snow (gripping real-life story; intriguing character / director with bad buzz but good BO / Weinstein)

4. The Current War (period piece / story with dull premise / director with good buzz / Weinstein)

5. Okja (no story details, except a premise that sounds cheesy / supporting character, possibly a cameo / imaginative director / no distributor)

Based on the potential of Jake's performances in these movies:

1. Stronger – the type of character an actor has the opportunity to play 2 or 3 times in his career (there aren't many "challenged" characters in Redmayne’s future). I don’t mean awards bait, I mean the opportunity for a poignant character study based on a real person who survived horrific circumstances and came out "whole" in spite of the physical limitations. Could be Jake's most powerful performance.

2-3. (tied) Nocturnal Animals / Man Who Made It Snow – he plays two characters in NA, double opportunity / I find Max Mermelstein more interesting than Tony and Edward

4. The Current War – neither character sounds "electrifying" but there’s potential for good dialogue and an actorly duet

5. Okja – playing who-knows-what in a monster movie? potential for an iconic character or a disaster

Scott said...

"3. Okra"

LOL, Yes can't wait for Jake to play another slimy character.

Hmm, its odd that box office mojo has Southpaw at 104 million worldwide but Numbrs has it at 88 million. Usually Mojo is way behind in calculating the box office for Jake's movies.

Did SP open in China or is Mojo just plain wrong again?

UltraViolet said...

LOL, Okra. Oops!

Darcy, I appreciate the support, but the last post had many, many comments before the weight issue came up. And as someone who thought Jake looked Loo Bloomish, I understood the discussion. He looks pretty thin in the Hollywood Film Awards photos and footage, as well.

Interesting thoughts on the roles Jake will actually play v. whether they are good box office prospects. I hope at least one of them will score on both levels.

Not sure what's happening with those Southpaw numbers. Would love BOM to be right, but as you said, they are usually way behind. I know Everest is going to open in China this week, but I don't think Southpaw has.

That's what I think, too. However I'm not sure if it's really necessary to lose that much weight for this role. Even if his character is a bit of a pushover, he isn't described as physically weak in the book. A hunky look would have been inappropriate, but a more average figure would have been fine.

Internationally "Southpaw" has grossed just as much as "The Fighter" ($35.8 million).

I feel like Tom Ford is really working the "double"/mirroring angle in this movie and it's Story-in-Story conceit. Isla Fisher and Amy Adams are obvious mirrors, so then the case becomes who is Tony/Jake's? At first I wanted to say Armie Hammer, but I feel like Aaron Taylor Johnson came into the project looking the most like Jake--longer hair, beard. But I just assumed he was one of the men Laura and Tony meet. So he'd be an odd mirror. Logically, it should be Edward. Has anyone seen what Armie Hammer looks like for this role? If he's oddly slim for it, we'll have some insight.

I agree, tho, the weight loss seems a bit much for this character. Certainly Tom Ford could have crafted the script to incorporate something that accounts for Tony's skinnier look, and he then took advantage of Jake's recent willingness to equate weight loss/gain with dedication to his "craft." I say that last part with both kind humor and a bit of critique-I don't get his hang-up with body transformation as a significant demonstration of acting technique. Or more accurately, I don't get why he does it so often as of late.

Piruleta said...

Maybe is just me, but I don't find the weight loss that big of a deal. I was watching LAOD the other day and I don't think he looks skinnier than he did for that movie.

Armie Hammer plays Susan's husband and Aaron Taylor-Johnson 'a mysterious figure who may pose a threat to Gyllenhaal’s family' as Variety puts it. Michael Shannon embodies a detective. I thought that Jake would play both Tony and Edward (?)

I also agree.Edward is thin and Tony can't look in shape, but I think it is beyond what I expected. in fact, I didn't expect weight loss. I thought he was going to have the look of Enemy.

I hope Tom will keep Aaron's character as in the book. I really liked his character, he's so much fun!

Ann said...

-I don't get his hang-up with body transformation as a significant demonstration of acting technique. Or more accurately, I don't get why he does it so often as of late.

If Tom Ford wanted him to do it for the film then how is it Jake's hangup? We won't really know until Jake talks about it who's decision it was and how he felt about it.

He made the decision for Nightcrawler and it fit. He had to bulk up to play a boxer in SP otherwise it wouldn't have the same effect. Despite the beard/hair he was normal body type for Everest and in Demolition he's got his usual physique. I think it will work for Nocturnal Animals especially because he's playing two characters, otherwise it might look too much like Enemy if he had the exact same look.

Anonymous said...

I don't mind the weight loss, it's that massive hair slicked back. I wish he would just let that beautiful hair be free but Jake didn't consult me.

Anonymous said...

" i wish he would just let that beautiful hair be free but Jake didn't consult me." So true! He really does have gorgeous hair which almost always seems to be under a hat, weighed down by a pint of gel, or in a beanie or shaved! Why!!??

Also his body was HOT in LAOD, not quite the same for Nocturnal Animals.

CAST: Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany

Tatiana gets her wish. As for Jake's appearance in NA, I like the hair onset so far, it's not gel. Let's face it, Jake has a gigantic head and big eyes. The weight loss in his face is more dominant when the hair slicked back. But I really thought it looked good in the bloody pics.

I'm not a fan of Jake's look in NA from what I have seen so far, looks very gaunt and and I'm not feeling the slicked back hair either.

UltraViolet said...

Hey, chica!

Ann, I was just making a joke. I expected Jake to look smoking hot in a Tom Ford movie, and so far, I've been disappointed. But who knows how everything will look once it's onscreen.

Imagine this :)

Q: Any memorable episodes during the shoot?

A: When we were shooting right on the bridge, the yaks started panicking and stampeded toward us. Jason (Clarke) got kicked; people were falling over, and there was no escape. There were a lot of dangerous or scary situations (like this) but we were never in mortal danger.

There would be nights when Jake (Gyllenhaal) would get a guitar, and play and sing. I’d be thinking, “I’m the luckiest girl in the world. Sitting here in front of a campfire listening to Jake serenade me with a new song.”

I’ve been a huge fan of so many of these actors, and to be able to go to Everest and to be able to play such a wonderful woman as Yasuko, it’s a huge honor.

New Spiderman:

My industry role model: Jake Gyllenhaal. I just haven't seen a film that Jake has been bad in. He makes clever and creative choices. He's someone I want to work with in the future.

News about Okja (The Verge):

Netflix backs South Korean monster movie starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal
Netflix and Brad Pitt's Plan B production company have signed on to Okja, a monster movie from Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho. As Variety reports, Netflix is investing in the film, and Plan B is co-producing it. South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports that Netflix is investing $50 million in the project.

Okja's cast includes Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Bill Nighy, and Kelly MacDonald. According to The Wrap, the film's narrative centers around a young Korean girl's friendship with a monster named Okja, who is apparently not that scary.

"It is a bulky animal, but with a mild and kind spirit," Bong said in a statement Monday. "The film is about a warm friendship between a country girl and a brute with stories."

Okja is currently in pre-production, and is expected to be released in theaters during the first half of 2017.

That's a project I'm looking for: Renowed director, a very fine cast and a substantial budget.

What good is that if the movie does not have a wide release if Netflix is involved. Big distributors have boycotted Netflix movies but if Plan B and Brad Pitt are involved then maybe it has a chance of a wide release.

I thought the article in either Deadline or Variety made it sound like his role in Okja was pretty small...?

RE: Dr's office pics-with the hat and shades on, it's hard to gauge his weight status at the moment. The clothes are so baggy that they add bulk--it's only if his eyes that that prominent sunken look that we'll know if he's still extra slim. Though I suppose these frequent dr visits are good-I'm sure film insurance has to keep an eye on his weight and overall health before clearing his for another project.

Are there any deleted scenes on the US edition of Southpaw? I haven't seen any gif sets of scenes on Tumblr that look new footage to me. I was just going to watch again On Demand, but I'll get my hands on the disc if there's worthy extras.

I sorta hoped we'd get more Billy & Maureen. I feel like Rachel was on set more than her time in the film reflects.

Apparently Weinstein has sent out screeners for "Southpaw".

"Nocturnal Animals" might turn out to be a 'beautiful people in beautiful settings' kind of movie. They've been casting older and very young looking models and the scenery looks much fancier than I imagined it reading the book (Awardswatch).

Most people know that Tom Ford does shoot beauty well but if he can dress up violence than I am all for it. Besides Awardswatch has probably saw the exact same set pics the rest of us have seen so I am not sure how a bloody Jake can be beautiful.

According ONTD, the medical building Jake frequents (which is hopefully nothing more than insurance for work) specializes in ear, nose and throat, a dentist, physical therapist and a therapist.

Here's hoping it's the fancy dermatologist that looks like it'll cost an arm an a leg!

Random question, do you all go to the doctor a lot for check-ups? I haven't been in about 5 years...is that normal/abnormal?

As for the medical building photos, I have to just ask people to stop speculating that it's some kind of insurance thing. (This isn't aimed solely at you, anon 9:42. People say this whenever there are photos form that place.)

We have no idea why Jake goes there. Maybe he's going to the dentist. Maybe he's seeing his shrink. It could be anything and it is absolutely none of our business. It's bad enough he has his photo taken going to the doctors. We don't have to add to the invasion of privacy by trying to figure out what he's doing there.

Jake Gyllenhaal has one of the highest critical scores on this list, and it’s no wonder: The Oscar-nominated heartthrob has been deep-diving into drama over the last few years, turning in acclaimed performances in movies like Nightcrawler, Prisoners, and Southpaw. While Gyllenhaal isn’t exactly setting the box office on fire — he’s only been in one movie that hit $100 million domestically, 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow — he still enjoys high name recognition and has a career arc that’s catnip to every hot director.

What's great is that his high critical score (69) is on par with DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. Better critics' score than Hanks, Pitt, Clooney, DDL, Bale, Damon, McC, Cooper, Bennie, Ruffalo and Gosling, better than Meryl, Julianne, Emily, Amy, Reese, Anne and Chastain. Only Joaquin, Fassbender and (baffling) Affleck have higher scores.

At no.31, he's 26 spots up from last year and 58 spots up from 2012.

While Gyllenhaal isn’t exactly setting the box office on fire
'cause Gosling is? He's currently below Jake, at no.40 (two years ago he was at 22), with the same studio value (7), same Oscar nod, but lower critical praise (62) and lower domestic BO, so why is he getting, at least apparently, better offers?

I know hot directors should be highly interested in working with Jake, they should "go crazy" over him, but so far it hasn't happened. Hopefully his future indies co-produced with Bold will be under Cary Fukunaga's direction, Chazelle or Refn. If not Linklater, Cuaron or Inarritu.

A producer for The Voice and other TV shows who frequently visits Nocturnal Animals sets posted a UCLA vine from Sunday's set and tweeted a pic of Jake's chair.

A good account to follow since she often tweets about Jake: his BAFTA interview , a backstage pic from HFA and something we heard about from Sasha Stone, Jake hosting a screening for Beasts of No Nation, an event that apparently took place on Nov. 10.

The costume designer also posted a pic from yesterday's set with the hashtag #sunday is monday. They're seemingly rushing to wrap the movie.

It syncs with Jake's THR interview for Hollywood Masters series, scheduled for November 18.

The Hollywood Masters series continues on campus throughout most of November. For the final installment of the season, moderator Stephen Galloway, the executive editor of features at The Hollywood Reporter, will sit down with none other than “Nightcrawler” star Jake Gyllenhaal. [...] Gyllenhaal will be on campus at Mayer Theater for the Hollywood Masters series on Wednesday, Nov. 18.

Next week we'll have a 90 min. long interview to watch and read.

Speaking of new interviews, Jeff Vespa tweeted about his Jake cover for TheWrap Awards Issue and a vine on his IG

Another long interview to read and listen on the podcast, but when?

Goodness Jake is gorgeous on that cover of the Wrap.

Really not feeling the hairstyle!

Darcy said...

You can see the new pics at this account. They look great, well Jake certainly does... He has 99% the Jaime look from LAOD.

BlueJean called it weeks ago: it was the dreadful hair that made people say he looked Nightcrawlerish, when he actually had the bodyframe from LAOD, he just needed a decent haircut.

Someone asked how Tom Ford would make Jake and Amy look like the college graduates that Edward and Susan were during their marriage. The answer was simple, at least in Jake's case: a clean-shaved face and a nice haircut. It works!

It's a '90s hairstyle because, like LAOD, it fits that time period. For the movie, if the year of Susan's frame story (when she receives the manuscript) is 2015, then hers and Edward's marriage happened during the '90s.

The hairstyle reminds of Loki's a little bit on the sides at least.

Daily Mail has the pics with better quality: Nocturnal Animals

Jamie (LAOD) is good and Loki is good! :)

Jake looks great!

The Wrap cover - he looks like he did on the Off Camera (magazine) cover, which he did directly after Broadway, I believe.

Edward's hairstyle is exactly the same as Jamie's in LAOD. Almost like looking in a mirror.

BlueJean said...

It is! And Jamie is like 6 or 7 years ago - he really hasn't aged much. Incredible how much difference a good shave makes! ;)

I just stating my opinion Darcy, the sides are a lot like Loki's.

Darcy said...

No problem, Scott. I didn't mean to contest your opinion (he may look a bit like Loki, too, only Loki had a couple of extra pounds). Just that the similarities to Jamie from LAOD are striking and it's something I didn't expect. Frankly, I didn't expect Edward to look so good (in this version, Susan should have less reasons to do...what she does in the book).

Yes, BlueJean! That and a decent haircut.

I think what we see in the movie and what those of us have read from the book , there won't be much similarities. Sure the lead characters are the same and some of the events of the movie will stay true to the book but i think a lot of it will be different. Tom Ford said I believe that he's done a brand new second portion of the movie.

Variety: Jake Gyllenhaal To Be Feted With Variety‘s International Star of the Year Award At Dubai Film Festival

Steven Gaydos, Vice President, Executive Editor, Variety added: “Jake Gyllenhaal’s promise as an actor was clear almost from the beginning of his illustrious career. ‘Donnie Darko’ is a cult classic and his work in films such as ‘October Sky,’ ‘The Good Girl’ and ‘Moonlight Mile’ signalled the emergence of a major new acting talent. While his Oscar-nominated turn in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ delivered on that promise, the last few years have witnessed an explosion of great work that matches the best actors of any generation. ‘Southpaw,’ ‘Nightcrawler,’ ‘Enemy,’ ‘Prisoners,’ ‘Everest,’ and ‘End of Watch’ all demonstrate this vital young artist’s skills, amazing range, and the depths to which he’ll travel to find his own unique truth and personal insights into each of these complex and often haunted characters.”

A public ‘In Conversation’ Q&A with Jake Gyllenhaal will be held during the fest.

Variety annually presents this award to a great film personality during Dubai in acknowledgment of their outstanding contribution to the industry.

The 12th edition of the Dubai fest will run December 9-16.

Saw the Dubai articles yesterday but I didn't know if they were true. There were so many sightings of Jake in Dubai in the last few months.

He is sporting the LAOD hair for NA looking at this on set pics and he looks good :)
Yeah it looks like the movie from what I am seeing and hearing will depart from the book a bit or more.

Scott said...

He is so gorgeous in those rain pics but that one pic reminds me of the movie The Shining. I hold out in fruitless hope that Jake will be cast in the lead in the Shining Prequel.

He looks really good in these set pictures, definitely a LAOD vibe :)

Read the book and it does sound like Ford will be taking the story in a different zone.

LOL:

David Beckham is the Sexiest Man Alive®. But we're burying the lede, which is that Jake Gyllenhaal has apparently died.

Yup, People got it wrong for the 12th year in a row!

I still think Jake is too skinny and I don't love the hair. He does look like Jamie Randall. But JR hair wasn't my favorite either. Reserving judgment until I see the moving image.

Good for Jake, picking up an award and getting to go to Dubai. Malavika, please keep us updated. So exciting for you!

And Scott, I hope you get to see Jake in March, as well. We need some GB roving reporters.
