Thanks to Nightcrawler, I end up reading every inspirational quote someone writes on FB or twitter in Gyllenhaal's Lou character voice.

Hear Steve Carell & Jake Gyllenhaal talked a lot Sat. at Governors Awards. Can only assume they were plotting Foxcatcher vs. Nightcrawler.

Just met Jake Gylennhaal at @momofuku , asked for a pic and he flat said "no, but have a nice day." Real. 😂😂

Sighting: jake gyllenhaal at Foxcatcher dressed like a celebrity trying not to look like a celebrity

Love the new DP/30 interview! Jake was honest, funny - and truly adorable! :)

I've finally watched "Nightcrawler". Wow, I love it a lot, both the movie and Jake's performance, especially the dark humor. And it's very consistent: no punishment, no redemption.

On a side note: Personally I'd put "Nightcrawler" as a satire into the comedy category, but I don't think that HFPA will have the guts to do that. The movie isn't that gory, but to label it as comedy might look inappropriate.

HFPA and SAG labeled Wolf of Wall Street as comedy and nominated the actors in Comedy/Musical category.

Happy Birthday Maggie and congrats on your British independent film nomination.

I saw NC yesterday... uuuhh!
I really have to think again about two or three passages, in the final part of the story, which made me wonder... Besides that, I was surprised by Lou-Nina 'relationship'... From all the interviews I'd heard, I'd assumed something different... A lot to think about... And I really want to see that in the original language (even if the 'italian JG voice' did his best, I think).
Tina
ps: comedy or drama? Hard to say... but maybe comedy...

Funny Buzzfeed poll. Jake is one of the few choices preferred over the food :) Vote if you want him to keep his position. (Annoying that they used that photo, however.)

From FB:

I just had a conversation with jake gyllenhaal. Yes, I touched him. He wished me a happy birthday. Oh and his sister.

She did not say the restaurant name.

Another tweet:

So my sister is serving #JakeGyllenhaal, #MaggieGyllenhaal and @mcgregor_ewan. I'm dying of jealousy right now. #jealous #brooklyn

And another tweet:

Nightcrawler so far grossed 25 million on the BO. And still on top 10. For me it's a little hit.
OR was right in not open it limited . I have seen films like Birdman that is not doing very well limited, despite the marketing and all the talk about the Oscars.

I think there was never a doubt that WoWS is a comedy, whereas HFPA made the odd decision to put "Blue Jasmine" into the drama category. Jake might be nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, though I'm by no means sure about that. On the other hand a Golden Globe nomination isn't very likely anyway.

OR was right in not open it limited.
The marketing for a wide release is certainly significantly more expensive than for a limited one. I don't know if the wide release of "Nightcrawler" has paid off financially, though I think it has helped to improve Jake's standing as an actor.

Well I have to take Jake's and the film makers word for the budget. I don't have any insider information and won't try to dissect what's the real cost of NC, movies profit long after they are released.

I will admit I did not like that Nightcrawler was not opened in limited release and given the chance to post inflated box office numbers like the so called specialty films.

Those films based on some of the expert opinions on this board are not financially successful and they rarely publish the cost of those films. Birdman and films like it are a success based on per screen average which isn't quite fair since that film was release widely in big metropolitan areas.

"On the other hand a Golden Globe nomination isn't very likely anyway."

I think the Spirit Award is more unlikely than the Golden Globe because the Spirit Awards have not shown Jake any respect at all.

"The marketing for a wide release is certainly significantly more expensive than for a limited one. I don't know if the wide release of "Nightcrawler" has paid off financially, though I think it has helped to improve Jake's standing as an actor.'

Really? Sometimes I wonder and this may get me thrown off your board UV and I will respect that decision but Hagen always gives Jake the most back handed compliments.

I haven't got a clue what you've read into my comment, which back handed compliments you're talking about and why UV should throw you off the board. For real.
IMO Jake should have at least one movie per year in wide release in the US. It wouldn't be helpful for his career if he only starred in niche movies in limited release.

I've only seen him mentioned in the predictions from this blog (QUINIELA I - QUINIELA II) but he is at the bottom of the list. I Will keep my eye on it, tho! :)

The total cost, distribution included, is 30 mil for NC, production was only 8 MIL. So there are still not covered domestic sales.

I agree wide release was good decision from any point of view. Hagen seems to have good overview about the movie generally and how it works. I hope anyone's post won't be taken personally.

I think James Bond thing is just a speculation, moreover I believe Daniel Craig remains as Bond as long as possible, for me he is the best Bond ever, he is the great drama actor and in combination with physical skills and JB stories he fits perfectly to the role. Moreover I think Bond will be always British, not saying JB "series" means contract for several seasons and it is too undertaking for an actor. SV

Deadline: IM Global also launched international sales on Antoine Fuqua’s The Man Who Made It Snow, a reteam for the director with star Jake Gyllenhaal. The crime thriller is the first feature from the production partnership between IM Global and Fuqua Films. Fuqua met with key international distributors which helped propel sales. EOne took the UK, Spain and Canada; TF1 Video bought France, and Universum was a taker in Germany. Other deals closed in Switzerland (Impuls); Israel (United King); Latin America (Sun); South Africa (M-Net); Hong Kong (Bravos); Korea and Thailand (Joy n Contents); and Taiwan (Applause).

That's a pretty good distributor in Germany.

You have to consider which other movies were on the release schedule, I would think. I'm glad whoever is responsible for it, that Jake's people have taken that into account when deciding which weekend, and how wide to open.

Piruleta said...

Ok, I've been looking for some info and yes, he is on the candidates list premiosgoya I don't think he will end being nominated but is really nice he is being considered :D

On IMDB there is one post about Jake as Joker, this is what I think he would manage grandiosely, quite good idea, and what the chance, that Heath Ledger played it so outstandingly as well, but who would say someone's thinking after years, that both guys from BBM would fit so well in the same role and each from different way, I want to see Jake in more psychopath's or bad asses roles. Something like in Time to Dance :-). I still miss Heath, too the same Philip SH. SV

Piruleta thanks! Let hope that all the buzz for his performance in NC can push it a bit for the Goya!

Why people go crazy for Jake 's man bun in NC? Just as they went crazy for his haircut in Prisoners, awards should add another category "Jake Gyllenhaal's hair in a movie"!:)

FP said...

SV I really think that Jake would be a great Joker, but I firmly believe he would never do such a thing to the memory of Heath, it is for that kind of thing that makes me proud to be a fan of his, JMHO

Piruleta said...

Finally some news about Nightcrawler, the film will be shown at the Madrid Premiere Week Festival on December 3rd. Now, It would be nice if there was an actual release date :(

Anonymous said...

FP it wasn't meant as he would play it again, just how he would manage the role, of course it wouldn't make any sense to do it now, especially when HL got the Oscar for it.SV

UltraViolet said...

Jess, I think Hagen is just stating facts and numbers objectively. I don't think there is any slight to Jake intended.

SV, where did you see that number for total NC costs? I know the movie was made for $8.5 million, and it was marketed heavily. But I've never seen a figure that includes the marketing cost.

In any case, it will do well over $30 million total domestic and foreign. It's not going to make a studio rich, but it certainly won't lose money.

Marketing for a limited release that goes wide isn't much cheaper than a full wide release. I'm happy NC wasn't consigned to limited release hell, like Enemy.

Piruleta, I'm happy to see some sign of Night in Spain :) And go, Goyas!

That James Bond article seems like a joke or a fantasy. I think Jake would make a great Bond, but it would almost certainly never happen and probably shouldn't. I can't imagine the reactions.

I would love to see Jake play a similar, suave character.

Looks like they are still selling Snow, despite the legal battle.

UV it is here, because production budget was 8, then this is certainly included all distribution costs:

SV, not because Heath won the Oscar, and never an Oscar was so deserved , Heath was great, stunning and hypnotic, he carries the movie, no matter how many great actors were involved, all disappear compared to him, he is the soul of the film, the spectacular joker of Nicholson loses big time against the iconic joker of Heath, that's it.
Jake in my opinion, but of course I may be wrong, would not do that not for the Oscar or fear of confrontation , Jake is a great actor just as Heath was, and finally after 10 years people are starting to get it,but much more simply, because Heath was a close friend. Friendship is a precious thing, and Jake has a tendency to protect and respect the precious things in his life.Again JMO.

However, I found this, and as far as the credibility of this article is to be demonstrated these few lines have warmed my heart:

‘Suicide Squad’ Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal As Joker? Proposed Alternatives To Jared Leto Are Also Oscar Worthy Actors! Which One Will Take Iconic Role?

"Another fan candidate for the role is Jake Gyllenhaal which would make Joker an exclusive "Brokeback Mountain" actors' role. Then again, those actors were chosen for "Brokeback" for a reason and that's the same reason they can handle the Joker role-they are simply great actors."

the roll out promotion of the film

Jake must be busy now preparing for the play! The Jake as Bond rumor seems to pop up off and on for the past few years.

Another comic book character attached to Jake, this time the Joker.I don't see it and it's not because of Heath it's just that I'm not a fan of comic book movies.

"I hope we won't have to wait a year until we can watch it."

If Southpaw is awards worthy at least for Jake, I will gladly wait another year. Movies released in the first part of the year don't have a chance for awards. Who would want Southpaw to lose any awards shot just because one can't wait a little longer?

Jess said...

" Who would want Southpaw to lose any awards shot just because one can't wait a little longer?"

Lol, I have said it before that it is a compliment that Jake films are released later in the year but its a little hard on his fans to wait all year but again it is flattering.

Everest was supposed to be released in Feb but that cast is pretty awesome and the film has some CGI I believe but still 7 months later is a long wait.

I do think Demolition will be a film festival movie along with Southpaw if Weinstein gets his way next year but stuff happens.

I am more excited for Demolition it seems like more fun even though the story is tragic. And you are right anon, I can wait. I have POP on queue.
