The long tease

There's been a mountain of Jake news today. First off, a longer, but still too short, red band teaser trailer for Enemy. Warning that the trailer reveals some things better left unseen before your first viewing:

Take a look at the women of Enemy here.

And the man:

From a new cover story in Man of the World magazine:

"It's taken me a long time in my career to realize that you can't be good at everything. You sometimes have to give something up. There are limits," the 33-year-old movie star says. "I do care about the stories people want to tell. But then I want to get back to my honest self for the directors I work with."

"It was just a shot in the dark—it was all about the relationship I had with Denis. For me, that's what movies are all about," he says. "Acting is a very strange job, as well as an amazing one, because it requires great trust. Your relationship with a director is very sacred, a sensitive space. I just can't do it with everyone. And that's what I have discovered about myself."

"The movie business is largely just stuffing actors in this place, and this place and this place," he says, noting that he typically takes time off to regroup between projects. "But it's time in your life that you can't have back."

"I was at a point in my life where I was struggling with the idea of reconciling parts of yourself—that we can exist just as one person," he says of the mystery movie. "Perceptions of who we are are never deadly accurate. I think we all come across as different people to different people in our lives."

"It's all about a level of commitment—how far will you go for a director you believe in? How far will you go for a story you believe in? I've always worked as hard as I can on everything I've done. But now I feel like I'm listening to myself and realizing that we have a finite amount of time, and how you spend it is really important."

We'll see how far Jake is willing to go for Baltasar Kormakur, seen here on set in Rome.

One more from my story with Jake Gyllenhaal for our new issue @manoftheworld #jakegyllenhaal #menswear #issue7 #hollywoodland #orderacopyfortherest

Jake is smoking hot in this pics!

Thanks, UV! Yes, FP they really are gorgeous photos. I've never seen this magazine before. Hope Jake & Baltasar have a good experience. Now that we have a taste of what he looks like for Everest, I hope they don't show anymore "green screen" filming. I don't want to know that much. : (

Realist said...

I just saw all the pics from the Everest shoot on IHJ. Oh no not another tent scene, the one picture with him and the guy laughing I wonder what was so funny?????

FP said...

Oh no not another tent scene

LOL! :)

Chica said...

He looks awesome , I can totally see him in the part now!

I will be seeing Enemy at a screening tomorow @ the Film Comment film festival. I will give everyone my spoiler-free review!

bobbyanna said...

That's great, Chica! It's quite a ride. : )

I think the guy in the red & fuschia outfit (!!!) is Igvar Sigursson who is a pretty big Iceland. : )

Two guys in a tent... I know.

I was looking at pictures of the real Beck Weathers who is Josh Brolin's character in this movie, and it was a terrible sight to see. It was a miracle he even survived the climb. His face and his hands were turning black from the frost bite. It was terrible ordeal for them.

I added that fourth photo - thanks, FP.

A couple of tweets that amused me:

Amici romani, Jake Gyllenhaal è a Cinecittà per girare un film e voi siete a casa vostra in pantofole./Roman friends, Jake Gyllenhaal is at Cinecitta to shoot a movie and you're at home in your slippers.

jesus desceu das nuvens e se transformou em jake gyllenhaal no set de everest/jesus came down from the clouds and turned into jake gyllenhaal on the set of everest

And poor Jake - I wonder if he got to eat there before he left NY.

UltraViolet said...

Anon, it is a gruesome true story. Won't be an easy ride, I imagine.

Chica, have fun at Enemy. I can't wait to hear your reaction.

A24 is doing a grab job of marketing, but I do think there will be a lot of WTF reactions.

Realist and Bobbyanna, Igvar Sigursson looks demonic in some of those shots!

filmcomment: Interview with Denis Villeneuve

The spider in "Enemy" was inspired by the sculpture "Maman" by French-American artist Louise Bourgeois.

It's an interesting interview that contains a major spoiler at the end.

bobbyanna said...

Yes, UV, that's an excellent discussion about Enemy. Interesting to read Denis's thoughts and how he developed his ideas. But Oy Vey! Definitely. MAJOR SPOILER!! And it was the damned interviewer who gave it away! :( I am looking forward to seeing it again. I know I'll notice stuff I missed the first time.

LOL! Yes, Ingvar in his red/fuschia demon's suit! LOL!

Hagen said...

I'm sorry for the spoiler, bobbyanna.

I think the guy in the red & fuschia outfit (!!!) is Igvar Sigursson who is a pretty big Iceland. : )

There's also Charlotte Bøving in one of the set pictures. She was Sigurðsson's co-star in the Icelandic movie "Of Horses and Men" and was nominated for an Edda Award, too. So we get the top league of the Icelandic movie scene. xD

Fun Fact: "Prisoners" was more successful in Iceland than movies like "Men of Steel", "Fast and Furious 6" and "World War Z", but they like Hobbits, Thor, "Frozen" and Baltasar Kormákur. xD

bobbyanna said...

Sorry, I meant to thank Hagen for the article. No need for you to apologize, Hagen. It's a fascinating article, which we don't always see. Not your fault they put a spoiler in it.

Ingvar is playing the Russian in the film. And Charlotte is playing the socialite isn't she?

Hagen said...

Ingvar is playing the Russian in the film.

Yes, but Charlotte is playing Lene Gammelgaard, a Danish client in Scott Fischer's team. Vanessa Kirby is playing the socialite.

I think the teasers have been too spoiler and that interview also contains a huge spoiler. It's a shame, but it is building buzz.

From Alex Billington/First Showing:

Enemy - My mind has been suitably fucked with. Delves deep into identity. Occasionally goofy, but totally original + Gyllenhaal is stellar.

I enjoyed Prisoners more as a cohesive thriller, but Enemy is the other Gyllenhaal/Villeneuve team-up that's also worth seeing. Hypnotic.

Garry McConnachie ‏@TheGMcConnachie 19m
@firstshowing I loved the trailer and I'm becoming ever more impressed by Gyllenhaal the more films he's in. This one looks v good.

Jordan Horowitz ‏@jehorowitz 17m
@firstshowing Totally.

Chris McQueen ‏@AgentMcQueen 11m
@firstshowing That good?

Angelo Muredda ‏@amuredda 8m
@firstshowing I kind of love ENEMY.

Alex Billington ‏@firstshowing 2m
@AgentMcQueen It's just utterly thought provoking and original and fascinating. I was caught up right until the end.

Updated the post to include another shot from the Man of the World article.

Realist said...

That man is so damn fucking gorgeous and that is all I have to say.

Extra said...

The tidbits about Enemy are a bit spoilerish so I have tried to keep from reading anything but the trailers aren't and they are weird and intense!
Wow he looks wild and wooly in these pics, lol!

Thanks for all the updates, can't wait till it hits the theaters!

Hagen said...

BlueJean, just in case you haven't noticed yet: "Enemy" will open in the Netherlands on May 29.

BlueJean said...

Thanks, Hagen! :) I hadn't noticed yet!

That's another three months though... 3 months! That's far too long! Sigh.

Amazing Jake's interview

@indiewire: Jake Gyllenhaal Tells Indiewire Why He Feels More 'Alive' Than Ever …

FP said...

From the Indiewire interview

I think so. I think so... I mean, I've become a lot more obsessed with the specificity of characters and like you said, my work, the choices I make, also being on stage was a really big evolution for me. Getting back on stage last year, I will again next year, to me, being a part of... I don't know... I just feel more alive in what I'm doing.

maybe I'll have the chance to see Jake play on stage!

Also are becoming more persistent rumors that Jake is at the top of the list, to play "True Detective", it's a good thing?

As a guess star bad guy I hope but I have not heard of that. That's the show with Matthew C and Woody H? Or if he would play Det. Loki haircut and all.

FP said...

hahaha Detective Loky is pretty iconic,I saw on twitter there are even fanfiction about him!

UltraViolet said...

True Detective is a critical smash, FP, so having Jake's name suggested is definitely a good thing. No idea if he would do it or if they'd really ask or if there's even going to be a second season. But it's a big hit this year.

New post.
