Talk, talk

Edited to add a photos of the company for If There Is I haven't Found It.

Eleven minutes of Jake Gyllenhaal discussing the filming of An Enemy. NB: There are spoilers. And a great thank you to Monica for the tip!

I think this has been posted, but it popped up yesterday for some reason. A review of Jake's career through Rendition:

The list of Toronto Film Festival movies was announced today, and End of Watch is indeed on it. No word on the date or if Jake will be able to attend. A reminder that tickets for If There Is I haven't Found It Yet are on sale now.

Thanks UV for posting this interview and the Rendition one.

I found it interesting he mentions spiders, I found two in my room last night. I didn't embrace them, to say the least. But I didn't scream when I saw them either.

I've been to Toronto several times, I didn't find it dark. I thought it is an interesting city, great food and the people are very nice.

I love that first photo, thanks so much for posting the interviews, the Rendition one is new to me.

I had to go back and check out some of the previous posts, I wish that I could go to see Jake's play but it doesn't seem likely at the moment:(

He looks years younger clean shaven doesn't he?

bobbyanna said...

Great finds, UV and monica!
Yes, Paula he does look years younger without the beard.

Lily, I don't find Toronto "dark" either. Ive been traveling back & forth to TO for so many years. Great place to weekend, little less that four hour drive. I always associate TO with good times.

UltraViolet said...

I love hearing Jake talk about work. Even if he looks tired/high :) And it's not too spoilerific.

Hi Paula! I'm so sorry for all the faraway Jake fans who can't go to the play. We'll have to all do detailed recaps and represent.

Bobbyanna and Lily, maybe Jake will elaborate on Toronto's dark side.

The interviews are great, thanks Monica and UV! I would like a little elaboration on Toronto's dark side too from Jake, I've never been there.

Thank you for posting the interesting interview. The shootings were obviously exhausting.

"End of Watch" on the tiff.net 2012 website. Schedule will be announced on August 21st.

I love this interview on An Enemy. Very happy for the things he said about the character.

He looks tired in this interview. But I think there are a lot of the character here.
I am very excited to see this movie.

From Peter Hammond:

End Of Watch from writer/director David Ayer is a funny, emotional, gritty (and violent) L.A. cop drama with exceptional performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as beat cops . Open Road plans to campaign Gyllenhaal for lead and Pena for support even though both have roughly equal screen time. It may have a better chance than last year’s gritty L.A.cop drama Rampart which struck out with the Academy. The genre is not one that is often recognized although Denzel Washington won Best Actor for Training Day and these performances are strong.

UltraViolet said...

Oh, thanks, Monica. Interesting angle on supporting v. lead. Not counting on that happening, but it's nice to hear.

Jake having dinner in the CZ:

I think the friend is eating at ABC Kitchen.

I also don't see going to the Oscars, but ... this talk about oscar is too early.
But I enjoyed reading this information. And I'm happy to see the investment that the open road is doing.

Love the interview and the insights into The Enemy, he looked so tired!

I don't know about Oscar talk, like Hammond said the academy usually doesn't recognize movies like this but I love what he said about EOW.

Good news on EOW opening at TIFF!!

bobbyanna said...

I agree, OONP, even tho my expectations are low for awards season recognition, it was great of Hammond to praise Michael's & Jake's acting, and the movie, too.

I'll see if I can upload the video somewhere. Sorry it was taken down, though it was pretty clearly the kind of video they use for promotion when the movie comes out. So it's not surprising it's gone.

From the NY Times Man of the Moment:

Cargo shorts have fallen out of fashion’s favor in recent seasons, but leave it to the actor Jake Gyllenhaal to dispel the myth about the multipocket piece. It’s not what you wear, but how you wear it that counts. A plain tee, baseball cap and high-tops look at once easygoing and movie-star sexy. Here’s how to get the look.

In my view it's pretty odd that Jake is praised for that outfit. LOL

Pics from the cast of If There Is I haven't Found it yet, thanks UV! They look kinda of somber....

Funny, there are tons of guys walking around NY with that same look and Jake gets a special mention in the NY Times, LOL!!

LOL, Hagen. You don't think that is high fashion?

Get it while you can. The deleted video.

You're welcome, Ciara.

Added a slightly cheerier photo to the post.

This is sad for the actress:

Let me just sit here and cry over these press photos of Jake G and what could have been.

He's going to be in an off-broadway show, which I auditioned for.

why isn't Jake smiling or looking more relaxed. He looks like he's bored. I mean he looks good but just bored

"why isn't Jake smiling or looking more relaxed. He looks like he's bored. I mean he looks good but just bored"

He doesn't look bored just a bit unsure and uncomfortable around the older actress it seems. The younger actress and the other actor look pleasant. The "mom" looks angry or put off maybe (based on body language) or (maybe she was going for sexy and failed). Either way, Jake looks uncomfortable next to her. But the other two actors look pleasant.

UltraViolet said...

Jake has taken to posing without smiling. I don't know why, but it can come off as boredom or misery.

Not sure if the photographers tried to get them all to smile. This photographer tweeted:

Check out my 'IF THERE IS...' A very serious Gyllenhaal...- Meet & Greet gallery http://bit.ly/NZ0ZIX

Brpadway.com posted it on their FB page, and the comments were all about how miserable they look.

Should Jake do another time travel movie?

Unless things went bad between him and Doug Liman? No idea if the book or script is any good.

Jake on the cover of Details: twitpic

UltraViolet said...

Ooh, nice shot. Interesting that he got a cover. I was afraid we wouldn't get anything like that with the play and since EoW is an indie.

It seems early for September - I don't want to think about fall! But that's the way of publishing.

An early review from a blogger:
http://meandmynineiron.wordpress.com/2012/05/09/end-of-watch-review/

Seen at a pre-release screening in Los Angeles:

Another honest film, this one a buddy cop comedy-drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena. I never watched The Wire, but I get the sense this movie has a lot of similarities in portraying real-life Mexican gangsters in their natural speech (though, I know The Wire didn’t invent this) in contrast with the two partners, as well as how the whole movie is shot with Gyllenhaal’s character taping everything.

Gyllenhaal and Pena have amazing chemistry, really capture what I imagine the relationship of two partners on the force to be and are actually pretty hilarious throughout the movie. A must-watch for anyone into cop shows and movies, which is about 90% of primetime TV. One of my favorite of the year.

End of Watch opens in theaters on September 28.

Rating: 5 stars out of 5

IMDb rating: n/a
What it should be: 7.5

Michelle Gomez' facelift wasn't a good idea. She looks strange when she smiles.

I'm glad to hear about another positive reaction to "End of Watch".

It would be nice to actually know how Jake himself was feeling and what he thought of the other people around him, etc. Because he is the only one who actually knows.
Posing for pictures isn't an especially natural one.

Jake on the cover of Details! Yessssss!

I'm definitely looking forward to this. : )

There are always so many risks involved with screening movies before they're released, so I'm very happy EoW is continuing to generate a lot of positive buzz.

Awesome thunderstorms, today. Power seems fine... so far. Thinking positive thoughts.

Tweety said...

I remember the tweet posted here about Jake at some hair salon, it must have been for the PR photos for the play. He does look TOO serious here!

I don't mind the early EOW reviews , as you have already said Bobbyanna the buzz has been really good.

Thanks for posting the Rendition interview and the interview about The Enemy, interesting.
Can't wait to read the Details interview!

Vulture has released a list of the "100 most valuable stars". Jake is #89:

Jake Gyllenhaal
The Wanderer
The sensitive hunk experiments in a number of genres, with modest success.

There was a time, a decade ago, when Hollywood hoped Jake Gyllenhaal was the next great leading man. His family had industry pedigree (his parents are director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner, his sister actress Maggie Gyllenhaal), and he’d given sensitive portrayals in October Sky, the cult hit Donnie Darko, and The Good Girl opposite Jennifer Aniston. He upgraded to blockbuster potential by appearing with Dennis Quaid in the sci-fi megahit The Day After Tomorrow, Gyllenhaal’s highest-grossing film to date, and then followed that up with the 2005 prestige pics Proof, Jarhead, and Brokeback Mountain, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.

The studios have subsequently tried him in thrillers (2007’s Zodiac), dramas (2007’s Rendition), dramedies (2010’s Love and Other Drugs), and action movies (2011’s Source Code), but he’s never quite delivered on all his movie-star promise. That was made abundantly clear when Disney’s big-budget 2010 tentpole Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time became a big-time disappointment, though Gyllenhaal isn’t fully to blame for all that CGI nonsense. The paparazzi, for their part, still snap when the 31-year-old dates stars like Taylor Swift, and Gyllenhaal’s not giving up: This year he’ll star in the cops-versus-cartel thriller End of Watch and is filming An Enemy with Inglourious Basterds’ Melanie Laurent.

Obviously the ranking is disputable (Jason Statham on #33, really?: low box office, low critcs' score, few magazine covers, but high studio value?). Nevertheless it's interesting to see how the public / media perceive Jake.

Spotted: A scruffy Jake Gyllenhaal in Murray Hill. If gay cowboys are your thing, go!

UltraViolet said...

Yeah, I saw that earlier in the week. I take issue with several things, including the fact that they give Jake no points for his overseas success. But sadly, I don't think studios do, either.

I hope EoW will bump his numbers up.

It makes me sad to think how Jake's perception has suffered post-BBM, due to mistakes of his own, yes. But also due to intangibles and to the vagaries of show business. No way to predict the movies that will hit and the ones that won't. And Jake has not gotten lucky in that area.

I hope EoW will change some of that, but he needs a big name studio or a big breakout hit to make a big difference.

Hagen said...

UV, I don't feel so negative about Jake's career. Many hollywood stars have just faded away in the past years, for example Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Tobey Maguire, Eric Bana or Edward Norton. I think Jake has been holding up pretty well.

Besidees Vulture criticizes its own ranking: Why Stars Don't Matter - and Never Have.

I don't mind that Jake's got to star in independent movies, as I'm intrigued with both "End of Watch" and "An Enemy". Though I must admit I'm a bit worried about the rumoured future projects. "Mobster" and to a lesser extent "Puzzle Palace" could turn out to be B-movies. And we don't know if Jake will get a better offer for a role. But as you already said, much will depend on "End of Watch".

UltraViolet said...

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm happy to see Jake in indies. I think he should have done more all along. But he needs one of these to break out or to be in a big mainstream hit in order for him to work on projects I think he should be doing or I'd like to see him doing.

I saw Jonah Hill on Letterman last night, talking about how he's working with Scorcese. I want Jake to be working with the major directors.

Chica said...

Same here Hagen and UV. Look at Leo and Scorcese, I wish Jake would colaborate with a director like that.
