A new entry in the NYC CZ?

we made our way to Abraço Espresso. And this is the part in the story where I pause, because I’m going to find it very difficult to impress upon you how amazing this place is. Because as illustrated just sentences ago, I am currently at the disadvantage of not holding your hands and staring into your eyes, and am therefore robbed of my traditional methods of communicating something Very Important. But, I’ll try.

It’s teeny weeny. It’s Portuguese. Apparently Jake Gyllenhaal frequents it while sporting cargo shorts, leading to an unfortunate declaration in a magazine of “the revival of the cargo short” which is really not a movement, but simply Jake Gyllenhaal dressing like a college student circa 2003. There is a case filled with freshly baked goodies, all which are amazing, but really what you need to know is that the Olive Oil Cake is situated in the upper right hand side, and you shouldn’t panic if the loaf is only two slices away from being gone, because there are many more loaves wrapped in paper and lining the top of the case. And you should get your coffee to stay, even though you’ll think there is no room, but you’d be amazed at how many people can squeeze at the open window and the tiny piece of wood that serves as a bar outside, and how it really is perfect for placing your espresso cup and, yes, your plate of Olive Oil Cake.

Just added a video The Insider put up today, a flashback to Jake and Jennifer A promoting The Good Girl.

bobbyanna said...

Thanks for the video, UV. It was a bit jumpy for me, but I was able to watch. The vibe between Jen & Jake reminds me of the way he was with Annie. Altho, have to say, some of those questions were really... ugh-inducing.

bobbyanna said...

You know I saw a caption on some random website about Jake being on the set of HIS movie, Very Good Girls, and I ignored it. This was around the time he'd just wrapped Ememy. But now I see People magazine saying the same damned thing. To my knowledge Jake isn't in the movie. ( I wouldn't mind at all if he were, but I don't think that's the case.)

Extra said...

Thanks for the pics UV, he looks good! The video is jumpy for me too but I enjoyed it. Loved the chemistry between Jake and Jennifer and yes it does remind me of Jake and Anne.

I saw that too Bobbyanna. Talk about lazy reporting.

Movie City News: "End of Watch – David Ayer is a really interesting, really arch director who hasn’t hit the sweet spot yet. Is this the one? Open Road is very into the film, which looks like it could be a first cousin to last year’s Rampart or Ayer’s first feature, Harsh Times. These films usually overwhelm Academy types, but we’ll see."

A commenter who claims to have watched the movie:
"End of Watch – [Grade] B
Entertaining cop film. Don’t see awards in its future. Had issues with it, especially the bad guys and the end. But it worked."

UltraViolet said...

Thanks, Hagen. I don't see EoW in awards season. I'm not getting my hopes up.

I could never in good conscience vote for the Yankees look!

Which reminds me of how annoying it was that Jake mentioned the Red Sox in that interview for An Enemy. Dude, you can try to pretend to be a Lakers fan and a Celtics fan. But you cannot be a Yankees fan and a Red Sox fan.

Okay, my mother was. But it was annoying!

Awww. I hope there's some awards season love for Jake. It would be great to see him get nominated.

Novelist Gore Vidal has died.

RIP, Gore.

Monica said...

I also don't think EOW goes to prizes. I hope it's a good movie and that Jake will be praised.

I'm anxious to see The Master and Les Miserables.

I love to see Jake and Jen together, thanks UV. Jake has great chemistry with the people he works with: Heath, Anne, Michelle Monaghan ...

Speaking of Anne, she's great as Catwoman. Her first meeting with Bruce it's wonderful. Anne has a great chemistry with Chris Bale. Loved seeing the scenes of them together.
The movie is good, has some holes, especially in the second act and some exposure, but still, it's a good movie.
All the actors give great performances, especially Michael Caine. His scenes are heartbreaking. And Tom Hardy deserves more love, his work with that mask wasn't easy, yet he was great.

A photo of Maggie appears in three scenes in the film.

I was reading that one of the producers of Source Code is the new president of the Academy(Oscar). He's currently producing Very Good Girls.

It seems that Disney characters are based on Jake Gyllenhaal:
After a tour of Disneyland, we wanted to know more about character creations and why the Disney princes and heroes all look so boxy and robot-like. Well, the truth is there’s a whole science behind creating the leading men of Disney, with long meetings with magazine cut-outs of celebrities to mimic what women of the world really find attractive. Appearenly most of them are currently based on Jake Gyllenhaal. Interesting.

Love the GG promo video with Jake and Jen, whta a great find UV! I always loved that movie, one of Jennifer's best roles and loved their chemistry.

He looks good with a bit of scruff, just the way I like it.

Thanks for the review of TDKR Monica, I plan on checking it out this weekend.

I don't expect that EOW is the kind of movie that will garner Oscar buzz, I just want it to do well at the BO.

RIP Mr. Vidal

Hagen said...

I hope that "End of Watch" will be critically acclaimed, even if it won't be nominated for any awards. David Ayer's previous movies, "Harsh Times" and "Street Kings", received mixed reviews.

The producers of "End of Watch" are flush with cash. They raised $275 million for their projects (The Hollywood Reporter). So maybe there's a chance they will produce another movie with Jake (if "End of Watch turns out to be a hit).

Monica said...

End of Watch:
Rated R For strong violence, some disturbing images, pervasive language including sexual references, and some drug use.

Hagen said...

This reminds me that "Brokeback Mountain" has an R rating in the U.S.; in Germany it's suitable for children who are at least 12 years old. On the other hand "Source Code" has a PG 13 rating in the U.S.; in Germany it's only for teenagers who are at least 16. Ratings can be very odd.

"End of Watch" will be shown at a movie fair in Cologne on August 8th. It's very close to the city I live in, but access is only for people who work in the movie business. :crap:

UltraViolet said...

Hi, likeMonaLisa! It would be wonderful for Jake to get a nomination. I just don't think this is the vehicle that will do it for him.

Oh, Hagen. So close! That's tantalizing. And it's not opening for a while in Germany, is it? Not fair.

About the rating: I had to laugh after the Comic-con clip was bleeped, and people thought the movie was going to be, as well. I don't think David Ayer would go along with that.

Also, it's sad that America considers sex so much more dangerous than violence.

Speaking of sex, apparently, the Details September cover is, like Vogue's, highly coveted.

Tweety said...

I see that Jake is making what looks like his daily visits to his Mom's movie set, not that I'm complaining:)It almost looks like he is directing a few scenes from the photos!

Not surprised by the R rating for EOW. I don't expect EOW do get any Oscar recognition but I sure hope that does well at the box office on opening weekend.

I too think that The Good Girl is Jennifer's best film role and a lot has to do with Jake, they made a memorable and tragic couple.

I always get a kick out of "jaded" New Yorkers still getting so excited everytime they bump into Jake, LOL!!

Whoa....where's my pic of Jake??? Lol

he was much faster than Keenan

And apparently the show ended with fireworks! Very cool.

bobbyanna said...

I understand the concerns ScriptShaow raised, but we really have no idea of the final shooting script or how the movie was edited, so I'm going to wait and see.

All the comments we've seen over the past few weeks of people who actually saw the movie, I don't recall similar criticisms.

UltraViolet said...

If this is the same sweater, I'm glad we can't see Jake's arms on the cover!

Also, Monica, I forgot to comment on the Disney prince item. I saw that too and laughed, because so many people say how Prince Erik looks like Jake.

Monica said...

I read the first comment in the shadow script and I know the end. bah

Not always the script shadow is correct. I remember the review for 127 hours and the person said very bad things about it.
And he also didn't like Source Code. For him the script was better.

Bobbyana is right, we don't know how it was edited, which was to screen and what wasn't, what changes were made.
I remember reading the script for Brokeback Mountain and had three versions to the scene of the motel. In one version, Ennis was wearing his pants while talking to Jack who was in bed. The version that is in the movie is better.

UV, when I saw the film I thought that Erik Prince is a lot like jake.

Anyway, Jake looks edible these days. ;-)

"End of Watch" gets another strong competitor. "Trouble with the Curve" starring Clint Eastwood will be released on September 21st, one week earlier than previously planned Cinema Blend.
Plus "The Master" directed by Paul Thomas Anderson will have its wide release on the same date.

UltraViolet said...

there's a trending topic on twitter that the new iPhone will be $800:

And ugh on that movie news, Hagen. It annoys me that Clint chose JT for that role. It will really bug if that eats into the EoW audience and PR.

Doesn't Justin have a record to make?

Oh, and hope you're having a great holiday, GC!

bobbyanna said...

That's rotten news about the the Clint Eastwood/JT movie, then you add the Paul Thomas Anderson film, The Master, it does not bode well for Jake's movie at all! :(
Maybe one of them will change dates...Or both of them.

bobbyanna said...

Meant to add there's already buzz for The Master. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Pheonix, & Amy Adams in a movie about a very Scientology type L. Ron Hubbard -ish guy set in the 50's.

I agree,UV,the CE/JT movie may compete with a similar audience to Jake's. I saw In Time on Cable a few nights ago and it was really, really, really bad. And it could have been good.

JT should stick to his music. Unfortunately, his music delivers a built in fanbase, so he keeps getting movies jobs. Maybe the novelty will die out.

Chicago Tribune: "Trouble with the Curve" will open two weeks before the Major League Baseball playoffs start on Oct. 5. Sony opted for a similar late-September opening slot for its MLB-themed "Moneyball" last fall.

LOL, Bobbyanna.

Viv, you are right. But even with Brad, Moneyball made "only" $75 million in the US, $110 worldwide. Also another example of everything being relative. Source Code was much more successful globally (Made more, cost less), but Jake gets no credit for that. Or little credit.

And yes, I know American studios make more money on the domestic box office.

Hagen, I saw that earlier and was trying to formulate a new post around it but stalled, lol. Interesting that they mention Jake and Michael Pena didn't really hit it off. I wondered about that, because there wasn't anything from Pena after Comic-Con about his relationship with Jake.

It says they clicked eventually, but it's unclear how much or if it was just on set/screen.

Hagen said...

I think the article is pretty interesting, particularly the Michael Peña quote: "Jake grew up in Hollywood, his mum's a screenwriter, his dad's a director. My parents were farmers. I'm sure he really worked hard too, but I had to work hard just to get enough money to go to Hollywood."
Obviously Michael had some reservations about Jake because of his relatively priviliged background.

The German trailer of EoW has been released today. The movie will open on December 20th. 4 1/2 months to go. Oh well.

UltraViolet said...

Exactly, that was the interesting part. And though it says they got past it, I am not sensing a lot of warmth. But as I said, there wasn't a lot written about it, so you can't say. It will be interesting to see what comes out in the film promotion.

I was happy to read Pena's thoughts. It's always nice to hear something a little off the usual PR course. And Pena's reservations are understandable.

Chica said...
