L&OD Screening(s) NYC

Updated the post to include some photos of Jake from the CMJ screening of L&OD on Thursday, 10/2. It looks like wax figure Jake at first, but he was real!

There was a screening of Love & OTher Drugs in New York last night, and film blogger Jeffrey Wells has supplied us with some Q&A photos and video of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. Wells also loved the film, particularly Jake's performance.

[it] is first and foremost a hit. It's charming and affecting and likable in a "good Eloi" sort of way, or in the way that cultivated mainstream audiences tend to go for. It's sharp and polished and beautifully shot and acted and cut, and it just grooves right along with sass and wit and ultra-frank sexuality and generous nudity and undercurrents that are Jerry Maguire-ish at times.

It's a very tight and assured romantic dramedy (or "emotional comedy," as post-screening moderator Elvis Mitchell put it tonight) that delivers an intensely sexual, emotional hair-trigger relationship story about two avoider-dodgers (played with wonderful verve and assurance by Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, both delivering the most appealing performances of their careers). It wades into emotional truths and touches bottom and knows exactly what it's doing and how to massage every note and bridge and stanza.

I'd been told that Hathaway's performance is the killer, and it is, I suppose, because you can read every emotional tick and tremor on her face, and because your heart goes out to any character coping with a debilitating disease (stage-one Parkinson's) and who wants to keep herself aloof and in control. But Gyllenhaal gives his most winning performance ever -- not the deepest or darkest or saddest, perhaps, but 100% likable with no audience-alienation issues except for emotional avoidance. They're quite a pair, these two. All you want is to see them keep it together and somehow make it work.

Love and Other Drugs isn't a deep-well soul film, but it plays its own game in a sharp and likable way, and sometimes quite movingly. It's tight and fast and precisely honed and well acted up and down, and for these and other attributes it could easily qualify as one of the ten Best Picture contenders.

The core of the romance is Jake's overcoming his shallow relationship history, and Anne overcoming her emotionally aloof thing. And both Hathaway and Gyllenhaal make their characters come vividly alive. It's a pleasure to get to know them and share the time. I'm looking forward to catching this at least a couple more times.

New still from L&OD. Looking good:

(Thanks to Jeffrey Wells/Hollywood Elsewhere.)

Wow, such exciting stuff from last night!!! Jake and Anne look amazing and I am thrilled there is video!!

Don't have time to go through everything now but this is fantastic stuff for LAOD promotion!

You could knock me over with a feather. Not only does Wells praise Jake's performance once...but TWICE. I think the earth just spun backwards.

I do have to take issue with that Gossip Girls site that posted the pics of Jake leaving the Westin Times Square and Anne heading somewhere...

The “Get Smart” babe and the “Brokeback Mountain” stud ...

Really? Jake and Anne have done no other movies of note, you know, more recently?

FL said...

I just sang happy birthday to Jake Gyllenhaal as he showered a cake with spit attempting to blow it out.

There was also another tweet last night that mentioned cake at the screening/Q&A. Why do you think they were giving Jake a b-day cake two months early?

Josie said...

First off I just have to say wow! I can't believe I can actually see his gorgeous face again, I have a lot to catch up on I see!

And what a fantastic review from Mr. Wells, he really loved LAOD. It was great to hear that he loved Jake's performance as much as Anne's.

Love the videos of the Q&A from last night, i'm looking forward to to seeing them promoting this film.

That is annoying FL, it's just plain laziness on their part.

A b'day cake 2 months early? How curious??

Jeff Wells! my, my, my! :)

I'm so happy the movie, especially Jake's performance, is being well received by the screening audiences and critics.

Jake and Anne look comfortable and easy together, too.

Great videos.

Jake and Annie look great and i'm over the moon that Wells gave is such an outstanding review, yes!

And thumbs up to him for posting the video. If I remember back in Dec. when he attended the screening and Q&A for Brothers, he promised to post the video bit I don't think he ever did.

Here is a reviee of LAOD from someone that was at the screening and Q&A last night, she loved it:

I'm happy reading all this praise, especially for the performance of Jake.
Sure, it's a surprise for me to read praise coming from JW for the work of Jake Gyllenhaal.

thanks!

bobbyanna said...

Tweety, thanks for the sweet review from marisalalli on tumblr. Poor thing. She wrote a wonderful review that ended with a prayer! LOLOL!:)

UltraViolet said...

LOL, Bobbyanna. And yes, thanks tweety for the link to the review. It was a fun read:

honestly i just couldn’t stop staring at jake throughout the entire q&a session. anne seemed lovely and was maybe the most eloquent person i’ve ever heard speak publicly. but good sweet jesus jake gyllenhaal is a beautiful man.

Finally got a chance to actually watch the videos. I love seeing Jake answer questions. He really seems to like and respect Zwick. His explanation of the way Zwick "manipulated" him was priceless. As was the stuff about the other actors being timid and then easing up.

It is amazing that Wells was so full of praise for Jake. I appreciated that, as well as the videos. I was afraid it would be all Anne all the time, but Wells must have enjoyed Jake's Q&A performance, too!

I saw the birthday cake tweet, too, FL, and didn't get it. Maybe it was for the character? LOL.

UltraViolet said...

Some old news. Not sure if anyone posted this X17 video link frmo the Elle event. Jake is in it briefly at the beginning.

And if you want a glimpse inside the Four Seasons ballroom for the Elle event, here you go.

From Twitter:

"Just announced! Jake Gyllenhaal & Anne Hathaway will be at post-screening Q&A of Love & Other Drugs. 7:30 @ Chelsea Clearview TONIGHT!"

This was later changed I guess Anne will not be there, but Jake is still confirmed. He sure works hard to promote his movies! All these special screenings seem unusual to me.

mary said...

guess thats why hes spending alot of time in NYC seems most of the early promos are being done in NYC

UltraViolet said...

Let's hope for more pics, accounts and perhaps video from tonight, too.

Forgot to say that I loved Anne's "Jake Gyllenhaal bra ejector" rule! Lucky woman.

Chica said...

The video is great but the review from Wells was even better! Also it was moderated by Elvis Mitchell who is awesome.

Gyllenhaal the bra ejector, LOL!!

Too bad Anne couldn't make tonights screening and Q&A. There was no mention of Ed but I doubt Jake will be fielding questions solo, perhaps Elvis will mod again!

bobbyanna said...

From Twitter:

"If you are in NYC and want 2 see a Jake Gyllenhaal Q&A, come to Clearview Cinema on 23rd & 8th by 9:45pm. I have a few tickets left. Go #CMJ"

Can you believe! According to this, they still have tickets left for the Q&A!

Some mixed reviews from tonights screening:

UltraViolet said...

Hey, Lola - the clips in this post/on Wells site are youtube, so you should be able to see them :(

Thanks for the tweets, tweety. I think there were more positive reactions than negative. I particularly like "Dysfunctional, beautiful and endearing." She also said:

I'll see it again! Love & Other Drugs is a modern classic. Rare to see a lifetime in 120 mins. Excellent from frame #1!

Here's another so-so photo.

From another tweeter, the one who took the first photo, I think:

On worrying that nude scenes would become screensavers, Jake Gylenhaal says fear is the killer of creativity. Says he trusted Ed Zwick

This tweet is not about L&OD, but it made me laugh:

Everytime Chelsea sees Jake Gyllenhall on the screen she says DaDa. *sigh* I wish

UltraViolet said...

Hey Annie, I'm not sure about the BB commentary, but that's cool if it's true. Elvis seems like a cool guy, but he annoyed me at another Q&A, I can't remember which one. Seems like he did a better job last night.

Updated the post with some pics from the event tonight. Lots more at WireImage and Getty. I'm sure Stephanie will have them all soon.

Monica said...

Aww Thank you! Jake looks great. Ed too.

Jake looks so hot. He looks thin to, but in a healthy good way.

Carla said...

Thanks for making my shitty morning! He looks mighty fine and Ed Zwick does not look bad either...:-))

Hopefully we will be getting some more reviews now.

I find it interesting that people are so divided with this movie - one person calls it "modern classic" and the next one "terrible"....although the majority seems to like it.

There has only been one reivew I've ever seen, so far, that says it was "terrible". Some may not of cared that much for it but it's not "mixed" like half thought it was good and the other half didn't like it. It have been more positive.

Jake is sure doing a lot of screenings and Q&A's for this movie, not that I'm complaining!

He looks great and he always works so hard promoting his movies.

Count me as shocked at what Jeff Wells had to say about Jake's performance in LAOD! The responses to the screening look like they are mostly positive.

Jake and Anne look wonderful and so comfortable together, I'm really looking forward to seeing this film next month.

get real said...

Wow, more screenings and Q&A!!! :D

Jake looks so great, relaxed and seems to have a great relationship with Ed Zwick. So glad to see the mostly positive reviews! I was especially shocked at Jeff Wells that thankfully he even paid attention to Jake. I usually hate him because he usually ignores that Jake is even in a move...grrr. Glad things have changed!

And OMG, that Chelsea theatre is one of my faves so I can't believe he was there last night, lol. I didn't check online until this morning so I missed it or else I would have gone. :( :(

I loved watching the videos of Jake and Anne. They seem like wonderful people and I love hearing them talk.

Great stuff to start a Friday. :)

All these special screenings seem unusual to me.

Was this their "roll out" strategy, rather than the festival route? Maybe trying to build up good WOM over a month? Who knows?

I really enjoyed those Q & A clips of Jake and Anne!

I was flabbergasted to hear Ed Zwick say that casting them was a happy accident because he had forgotten they had both been in BBM. BBM had to have been the most high profile, talked about film of the 2005/2006 season..... and Zwick couldn't remember the cast? I think that's odd, coming from an American director.

A big thanks to UV for the "DaDa" tweet......
you started my Friday off with a good laugh. :)

Ginny said...

Was this their "roll out" strategy, rather than the festival route? Maybe trying to build up good WOM over a month? Who knows?

Funny you should say that suvee just read this on Indiewire

First, Jeff Wells rambled on about how great it was (going so far as to call it Edward Zwick’s best film), and now there’s this more nuanced but still quite favorable review on The Playlist, which continues a suggestion a lot of Oscar watchers had kind of tucked aside for the past month or two: mainstream Anne Hathaway-Jake Gyllenhaal rom-com “Love and Other Drugs” is a part of this year’s race. Maybe it was all a result of some clever campaign strategy on behalf of 20th Century Fox - NOT screening in Toronto or Telluride and getting bad buzz as a result so we’d all be surprised when decent reviews come along. I suspect the film will end up with its fare share of haters (comparisons to “Jerry Maguire” and “Up In The Air” already scare me, personally), but if audiences click it could end up a major Oscar player, just like “Maguire” and “Air” did. Most likely seems Anne Hathaway, which further complicates the already jam packed best actress race by giving it an 11th major contender:

Shondra said...

Jake does look relaxed, confident and happy. The video was fun to watch.I can't wait to see Anne and Jake on the big screen again:))

I was curious as well regarding all these screenings and Q&A's and was wondering if this was the studio's strategy all along instead of having the film play at the film festivals.

So far the buzz has been building and the reviews have been mixed/good so perhaps it will work.

Thanks for all the updates and links everyone and that was a cute tweet UV!

UltraViolet said...

Glad you got a kick out of that tweet, suvee and Shondra. It really did make me laugh.

I was happy to see the Playlist review. I give it much more credence than a review from someone invoking Gene Shalit!

I have no faith in studios anymore. If L&OD becomes a hit, I think it will be pure luck/movie appeal and nothing to do with whatever strategy they are employing.

I can't figure out their online approach at all. As FL mentioned, it seems amateurish at best. Let's just hope that word of mouth, if it remains mostly positive, does the trick.

Here's another shot of Jake from the Q&A last night.

And a nice shot of Jake in the GQ Weekly Fashion Review:

Apparently, Jake—and his consistently rakish sense of style—got the no-tie memo too. Seriously, if you don't have a man-crush on him—or at least a serious case of envy—after seeing this photo, there's something wrong with you.

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for the MTV link, Monica. For a site/channel/brand that's supposed to be hip, I find the MTV website slow and annoying and full of glitches. But I finally got to watch all of the vids. I wish we could see the whole Q&A. And the audience shots were so silly.

But it's always fun to hear Jake talk. Loved the question about whether he's smooth with the ladies. And Anne's insistence that Jake has "animal magnetism."

If Access Hollywood weekend edition hasn't aired in your area yet, check it out. They have a very brief glimpse of Jake's intro of Gwyneth Paltrow at those Elle awards. And it was different stuff from what we've read so far.

Jake says that GP also starred in Iron Man as Pepper Potts, perhaps the best character with the stupidest name since Huggy Bear and Alotta Fagina.* Speaking of Alotta Fagina, thank you for having me tonight."

We also get to see Gwyneth saying she was a fucking hormonal mess working on Proof, but we don't get to see Jake's reaction.

Warning - you have to sit through a lot of Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn to get to the Jake part.

*If like me, you don't know who that is, it's a character from Austin Powers.

Alotta Fagina? hahahahaha

Wells has some more on LAOD except its all about Anne and her chance for an Oscar nomination and through it all i don't think I remember seeing Jake mentioned.
And here he pretty much talks about Jake as being equal to Anne in performance at least that's the impression i got.
Maybe it's because he has been talking about Anne as a chance to be nominated for months even before he saw the movie but it's kind of a let-down to have Jake suddenly ignored.

And Tayor is a good song-writer. She knows she isn't as good a singer as others, but she is still out there singing her songs.
There have been male singers who aren't as good singers as others but they do their own songs and are accepted as "that's just how it is".
I think she's cute..beautiful hair..and does love what she does.
Very good interview in USA Today where she seems to be quite bright.
I rem. reading somewhere where someone thought Jake was stupid and I have no idea where that would come from. No one has ever said that about him who has worked with him or knows him. But this was the impression someone had who just saw him in a movie I guess.
Also, sometimes there are very good and kind people who are not up to the right "beautiful or attractive" standard and are ignored. In other words i find the word "ugly"..lets say..ugly.

The TS thing's just so random. LOL!

I did a bit of internet "research" and chatted with a good friend, and learned a few things... which may mean nothing in the scheme of things.

TS was in London up until Friday.
Maggie's in London working.TS and her friend, Demi Lovato, were photo'd leaving or going into Jamie Oliver's restaurant in London. Jake's a huge Jamie Oliver fan.
I'm also told TS is a foodie.

My main surprise is definitely the age difference. Not only is TS young, (even tho she'll be 21 in December)she seems even younger! I usually associate Jake socially, with people closer to his own age, or even slightly older.

TS is someone I definitely associate with the "Disney" set, to some degree, like Demi and Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, the "Twi-hards" etc.

Of course it's possible, even very likely, that they aren't"dating" at all, just hanging out.

We're going to hear lots of reports of Jake with various women. My goodness...Madonna just arrived in NYC...:)))(He might be a little old for her!)

UltraViolet said...

And so it begins:

Taylor Swift definitely has a taste for older men! The 20-year-old country songbird has a new man in her life: 29-year-old actor Jake Gyllenhaal, the Scene Queens can report exclusively. The two were spotted looking cozy in Brooklyn, N.Y., yesterday. "Taylor and Jake were walking around Park Slope holding hands," an eyewitness tells the Scene Queens. "They looked like a couple!"

Taylor's date with Jake comes on the heels of recent reports that the singer had been romantically entangled with 33-year-old rocker John Mayer. Jake's most recent relationship was with actress Reese Witherspoon; the two split 10 months ago.

According to Lainey Gossip they are dating, although Lainey also claimed Isabel Lucas and Jake were pratically grinding one another in public when they had dinner in Montreal (judging how shy Isabel comes across in interviews, I'd say that was total BS) so make of it what you will.
I smell publicity stunt...

All of this is so amusing to me. I don't know why. The internets are on FY-AH with this news. And I use "news" lightly here.

At the end of the day there are far worse people he could be connected to. Or she for that matter.

I will say this, however, trying to search for actual Jake news is virtually impossible today. :-D

who knows but why would Jake do any kind of publicity stunt. Have always thought he wouldn't like that kind of thing.
If he's seen with someone, its because he likes them.

Anonymous said...

Hi guys, something doesn't seem right about this story as doesn't seem to fit in with Jakes previous relationship patterns but hey maybe turning 30 is spurring him into change but doesn't fit in with previous ballet sightings and how he likes these things on the down low.

But if true there are worse people that both could pick, seems bit of age gap to me and her mom is said to be very protective but what do I know it's his life

bobbyanna said...

Thanks, UV! The "Queenie Darlene" blogger had an incredible picture of Jake. Really beautiful.

UV, TS is turning the BIG 21. Maybe she has a Very Big Plan. and it includes Jake. :)

I hate to say it but some of the song-writing comments on twitter are hilarious.

"I get the general feeling that she's a bit juvenile and a borderline stage 5 clinger..."

Exactly. She seems like a sweet kid. A very adolescent fangirl. Like maybe she'd hyperventillate if he started unzipping his fly!

UltraViolet said...

You're welcome, Bobbyanna. Here's a direct link to the picture I mentioned above.

A lot of people think Jake is young/acts young. And god knows, he has done the older woman thing. The age difference is a little much for me, but if it's just a fling, it doesn't really matter. And if it's not even a fling, then it really doesn't matter.

mary said...

gosh i sure hope its just a fling she just seems too young for him but who am i to say:) only time will tell i personally dont think it will last very long if this is true.IMO

Anonymous said...

Anyone read the article in People on Taylor..maybe you should.
She's pretty savy about life i think.
Jake has always seemed older than his years in the way he see life and his career, etc.
But he's a kid in his joy of things and that's a good thing.
Her SNL really was one of the better reviewed in the ones i read.

Disclaimer: The following opinion is valid ONLY IF Jake and TS actually are dating. Otherwise, never mind. :)

Sorry, but I can't get excited about him (seriously) dating a 20 year old girl. Yes, girl. I don't care how mature she is for her age, how atypical she is for a 20 year old. 20 is not an adult.

I'm going to believe this is just a fun rebound romp for him. Maybe he's in the mood to be worshipped and admired by a young impressionable female. In which case, hope he has fun! (Of course, he might want to think twice about her worrisome habit of publically calling out old boyfriends in her songs!)

It will be interesting to see what this really turns out to be.

A belated Congratulations to you, Monica!

im with you suvee i think this is just a fun rebound as you said for him:)

Jake and Taylor

Well at least she's not towering over him in those pics. Tall girl.

FL said...

There is something called casual dating it doesn't always have to be serious, just saying.

Evidently, Chica, Suvee, we come from a generation where people actually dated different people, sometimes a couple of different people in a month. Judging by things I read in comments online nowadays that is akin to being a "loose woman". Of course that's not the phrase these people use, but you know what I mean. Oy.

Lola said...

Suvee I agree with you a 100%. This just creeps me out, i think she's way to young for him. I also do not want to hear a song written about him.

Well, I found a few song suggestions online:

"You were my prince of Persiaaaah! but you treated me like your Bubble girrrl!"

Oh, and a song titled,

OK. I'll stop. :/

Tweety said...

I noticed him trending too Viv, sigh. I wish it was about LAOD, I don't even think he trended when Pop came out.

I think she is way too young but it's none of my business.

It's interesting how things have reverted back to a woman being "loose" if she casually dates FL, it didn't seem that long ago that type of attitude was fading.

viv said...

Oh~~~Tweety
I believe I saw "persia" trending when POP came out :)
But tending didn't help the box office much...((sigh))
Why can't jake date with Natalie or Hathaway etc....they will be the most blessed couple :)

I really hope he and Taylor whatever is just having a NYC tour.

Tweety said...

You're right Viv, he did trend when Pop came out, that seems like such a long time ago.

Oh well, like I said it's none of my business. I really don't know much about her, i'm not a fan of Country western music, those song suggestions are funny Bobbyanna!

She will be busy promoting her CD this week, we will see if there ant further sightings.

Love the FB sighting of Jake and "Ross" Bobbyanna, thanks!

Get Real said...

Oy vey is all I have to say about the shit storm caused by all this Jake and Taylor gossip....sigh....wish he was trending because of LAOD.

bobbyanna said...

Tweety, viv, I agree. I want Jake "trending" for his work, not for who he's socializing with. Hopefully a few days from now things will quiet down. Next week he's supposed to participate in the AFI film festival opening for LAOD. I hope it's not a circus.

Anonymous said...

LAOD is a month away and there's no reason to think "trending" won't start happening with that as it gets closer to the movie's release date.
With anyone in the public eye if they are seen with someone "new" then it is going to be noticed.

viv said...

No...I mean I hope LAOD will be THAT hot as Jake's rumor when it coming out :)
People are more interested in gossip than talking about a new movie . It's human nature.

I would also like to see him dominate the TT's with a movie, but we know that people like to comment more about the personal life. The audience loves it.

And if we go back in time, we saw the same thing with him and Reese in Rome. All sites were commenting on them.

I see no problem with age. The important thing if she is intelligent, educated, mature, etc..
I remember I was shocked when I read that Heath was with Gemma Ward, who was just 20. It was a surprise. Has anyone seen a picture os her? She looks much younger than her age, but apparently intelligent and discreet.

I think it would have been one of the most talked about couples of that year, if it not happened what happened.

My hope is that Maggie will save him. Actually, I still do not know what to think.
Ok, I'm not happy about it.

Just been looking at the pics of them out and about, not sure what to make of them, doesnt look like a date date as seems to be a few other people around & funny no pic of them holding hands. Im more inclined to think they are friends as im sure they are at different stages in their lifes as Jake has spoken about marriage & children but im hoping he doesnt end up in a song as i think thats where her immaturity shows when the songs are so obvious about ex boyfriends
Ill go now lol x

Love And Other Drugs review from The Hollywood Reporter:

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway are terrific as two sarcastic, sexually hungry young people eager to hop into bed, or go up against the nearest wall for a knee-trembler. Sappy romance doesn't suit either of their characters so something goes a little limp when they acknowledge their love. Where a Viagra salesman when you need him?

...

In the end, this is a smart movie that could have been smarter. The script feels like it was a draft or so away from total clarity and focus. But the energy of the cast and a dive into an unfamiliar world make the movie rather addictive.

Thanks, Leonor!

If it's less than that..fine..if it's more than that then its something he's involved with, he wants to be there.

Another good Blog Stage:

...yet the film mostly works because the couple is played by Gyllenhaal and Hathaway, two young actors doing some of their best work in their careers. Gyllenhaal has always been an interesting actor, often underrated because he is just so damn cute. Which makes him perfect to play Jamie, who in unapologetic in his womanizing ways and yet so irresistible. At one point he tells a nurse that eventually, she's going to come to love him, no matter how much she resists. And we know it's true. It takes a charismatic actor to pull that line off without looking like a sleaze, and Gyllenhaal is perfect.

I have to say I don't understand all the judgment. As I said yesterday, this isn't someone I'd have picked for Jake. But what business of ours is it?

I don't know anything about Taylor Swift other than she's young and very successful. And when you get right down to it, I don't what Jake is like in a relationship.

I can see that the internets are full of people who hate the idea of them together, but I don't understand why a fan would lose respect for Jake over this. We don't even know what "this" is.

Not to say people can't voice their objections or disappointment. I just don't understand the negativity. I didn't understand it when he dated Reese (another person I'd never have chosen for him) and I don't get it now.

mary said...

Another decent review came from Variety. :)

If Jake and Miss Swift are in a relationship, I hope they're having fun as long as it lasts.
I personally think Jake looks good with Hathaway. But what do I know? ;)

Monica said...

I do not know, but that's what I feel, unfortunately. I know it is as something childish, but I can not control.

Going for something more important. Anne Thompson talk about Love And Other Drugs:

ast night I sat in a Fox screening room packed with critics to see Edward Zwick’s Love & Other Drugs. Zwick has done what I have long wanted him to do—get into the James L. Brooks/Nancy Meyers smart comedy mode, as he and partner Marshall Hershkovitz did for so many great TV series, from 30 Something to Relativity. Zwick’s previous films such as Defiance, Blood Diamond and The Last Samurai have tended to high-minded commercial dramas packed with action, whereas Love & Other Drugs is a Jake Gyllenhaal-Anne Hathaway romantic comedy with dramatic overtones—and plenty of artfully constructed sex and nudity. The movie is very commercial and should please young audiences more than critics, which would seem essential to any serious Oscar hopeful (see early reviews below). Fox is harboring award season hopes.

Extra said...

I don't know if you were able to access the Variety review UV, here is one if the relevent passages:

“If one can get past the calculation inherent in the drug-pushing-boy-meets-disease-stricken-girl setup, Love & Other Drugs clicks largely because its actors do. Their ribald pillow talk lends the film a verbal tartness that’s complemented visually by the abundant nudity…Zwick’s unflattering snapshot of the venality of the medical establishment is fascinating, if fanciful (one hopes). But it also raises expectations of seriousness, or at least deeper satirical intent, that fizzle out as the film earnestly toes the romantic-comedy line.

suvee said...

And when you get right down to it, I don't what Jake is like in a relationship.

Thanks, UV, for that reminder (I sort of needed to hear that). :)
He's attracted to who he's attracted to...... it's his life, his happiness. Whatever this turns out to be, good luck to him.

Thanks for tying up the Fishkill Farms loose end. I had totally blown that one off as mistaken identity.

And thanks to all for providing the L&OD reviews. I'm still thinking this should be a B.O. hit.

bobbyanna said...

I'm trying not to judge. I'm just frustrated.

I just wish the chatter would be about LAOD, Jake's work in general, and hopefully, some upcoming projects.

Instead, he's all over the tabloids, print & TV, promoting someone else's CD. It's an unnecessary distraction.

The talk is all about who he's spending time with, in whatever capacity. And she seems really giddy about it. Very caught up in herself. Which is natural.

TS likes to talk about her personal life, relationships, etc. & Jake's someone who's private and avoids personal publicity whenever he can. Just from observing her, I question her maturity. Irrational of me,maybe.

I'm uneasy about all of this, seeming to come out of nowhere. What timing. But I love Jake, and I think I'm a "no matter what" kind of fan in his case.

And truly, UV you're right. We don't know what he's really like to date, or what he's looking for. Except for the age difference, I have to admit she's his physical type. Oh well. (sigh.)

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Those are positive/good reviews from THR and Variety, YAY!!!

My two cents: I think that they are just hanging out , casual, etc. Just like anyone else that are trying to get to know each other but they are celebs so I think it's being blown out of proportion.

Anonymous said...

There has already been a lot of publicity for Taylor's CD..before we saw them mentioned together..she does not need to "use" him for CD publicity or any kind at all.
If he is hanging out with her he is doing it because he wants to.
It might just be hanging out time and then they go their seperate ways.

mary said...

people, com just posted a small article on them stating they are just hanging out together nothing serious per jakes rep

people,com said...

Neither Jake nor Taylor's reps are quoted, just the usual sources:

"Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift set the rumor mill abuzz after they spent a fun-packed weekend in New York together, but at this point sources say their relationship is unlikely to get serious.

Swift, 20, has just released a new album, Speak Now, and isn't in a position to get entangled in a romance, according to a source close to the singer.

"Taylor is very serious about her career," the source tells PEOPLE. "For her, it's all about the career right now. She's not really interested in getting heavily involved with anyone."

Even after this weekend's social events – which included a visit to Saturday Night Live set and a friendly brunch in Brooklyn – the two are just hanging out for now, a Gyllenhaal source agrees.

"They're cute together," says a source close to Gyllenhaal, 29. "But I don't think there's anything to it. Everyone's talking about it. They hung out. But that's it. I don't think they're a couple."

Whether romance blossoms between the two remains to be seen, although the Swift source predicts she'll look outside the entertainment business for long-term love.

"If she does have a serious relationship, it's probably going to be with someone who's not in the industry or someone who's not a household name," the source says. "With Jake, she probably figures, why not be seen together and keep everyone guessing."

Swift's rep couldn't be reached for comment.

suvee said...

The People blurb only quotes "sources close to" Gyllenhaal and Swift..... nothing from their actual reps. Doubt we will hear anything from an official source.

But I can easily believe this is a casual thing.

mary said...

whoops i read it wrong sorry it said sources not reps:)

So can we all take a deep breath now? The overreactions have been a little mindblowing to me quite frankly, not only here but everywhere.

I think what this proves is 1) we don't know who Jake is friends with, 2) we don't know the extent of any of those friendships, and 3) even if we did, who are we to "disapprove" of whom he wants to spend time with.

I'm still amused by it all.

Monica, I don't think it's childish to be disappointed or even turned off. This is all kind of irrational to begin with. I am just shocked to hear that fans would "lose respect" for him over something like this. Especially when, as I said, we don't know what this is.

I laughed at the People non-story. I think they were mad that Us got the big apple-picking scoop and wanted to have something.

suvee said...

Nope, me either.

I doubt if someone close to Gyllenhaal said anything because even reps. rarely say anything.
Jake & Reese had no scenes together in "Rendition". They were not even photographed together (in a car) until 6 months after they were together.
They were never photographed together until after the final
"Rendition" publicity.
I guess Jake shouldn't continue to live his life as he wants..and he should go into hiding a month before his movie opens.
One thing the people who know him have said is that he is "real"..(recently..just ask Anne, and of course RDJ who admires him so much because of those qualities)..he is not a phony...and that would mean among other things he isn't going to manafacture something to get publicity.

Lola said...

I love hearing all these good reviews for laod. Bobbyanna pretty muched summed up my feeling on the TS thing, Im also a "no matter what" fan. I think maybe the reason people would loose respect for jake is because TS is in the Miley cyrus, Joe jonas, twilght circle and him being with her would bring a lot of attention for the wrong reasons. Thats mainly why I was upset. I was scared if this was a relationship this would be a public one and take attention away from his career. Also for me the problem isn't really her age it's her maturity level, she still acts like a teenager.

UltraViolet said...

Usually I get annoyed when Wells adopts a film and won't shut up about it. But I'm thrilled that he's going to bat for L&OD. Thanks for the link, Monica.

Anonymous said...

I've always seen Taylor as a country (and sometimes pop) personality. She may know the "teenage" fan types but she is more than that. She also hasn't gone the way of MS - completely changing in one year almost her entire "image". In fact she has said that is something she wouldn't do.
No one is going to think Jake is part of that "crowd" because he is almost 30 and also because he has done movies that are Not teenage movies (or been in their music circles) He is someone who has a long list of excellent performances and has more on the way.
Also he hasn't been seen hanging out with any of those people or had his name associated with them over the last 5 or so years.
He hasn't had tabloid coverage like a lot do and those have not been in a good way.
Something like this or whoever he is going to be seen with will not overtake his career. One reason is Talent! He has real talent not just "passable talent" that in time can't sustain itself.
I rem. the scrapes Johnny Depp got into a number of years back and his various girlfriends and this was before the internet and even more news is out there 24/7. And he has done quite well being known as a good actor.
Same "another anon".

Who is losing respect for Jake..because he's seen with someone they don't think he should be with? He has a right to be with whoever he wants to be with.
He will be doing interviews about LAOD and future movies he will be doing. What he owes his fans are good performances in good movies. He will try his best to do that.
That reminds me of some tapes I saw of young fans not even barely 13-14 years old who were hysterical because Justin Beiber had been seen with a girl and giving her a little kiss. They were saying things about her and they were also saying they were not fans of his anymore.
It's what kids do when they think they have some personal relationship or think they "own" their favorite singer or actor.
Luckily the majority isn't like that.

Lola said...

Well i think its dying down a little or at least for me it is, and with LAOD promotion coming up I think this will hopefully be forgotton. Yes anon Jake does have a right to be with whoever he wants but that doesn't mean we have to like her. My initial shock is over and now i don't really care, if there is something going on I seriously doubt it would be a long term thing, and i don't mind him having a little fun. I don't listen to critics but from this site I know that Wells doesn't like Jake so if he's backing the movie it must be good. I also would like to say that i'm a jake fan because I think he's a great actor, but I love being able to come to GB and talk about all aspects of Jake's life, especially with what happened over the weekend it was nice to have the freedom to talk about it and hear others opinions.

Jake Gyllenhaal Stands Up To Cancer With Major League Baseball

Mildred Pierce was on earlier! I LOVE that movie!

One more. Made me smile. From twitter:

"Just saw Jake Gyllenhaal on the subway. Uber hot - he could totally get it. "

Love the subway tweets!

For anyone wondering, the PSA during the World Series game was the one we've already seen. Nothing new :(

I don't know whether he liked the movie or not, but the Ropes of Silicon blogger who had been anticipating L&OD's awards chances, downgraded both the movie's and Anne's odds of nomination.

Could be he liked it but didn't think it awards-worthy or he hated it.

More from one of the subway spotters:

haha nobody was even acting like it was a big deal and it was a crowded subway. I didnt realize i was standing next to him for a couple minutes. I couldnt act fast enough, then he was going for the door. Ugh maybe we will meet again. He is the cutest boy i have ever seen in real life. ...

scruffy and perfect. I will use my A game next time.

And from Lainey, who saw L&OD today:

So, yeah, I’ve just come from a press screening for Love & Other Drugs. Jake. Jake. Jake. Jakey. All I want to do now is climb into bed, daydream, and write the screenplay – in my head – for when we meet. Totally know what I’m going to wear.

And on twitter:

Don't mind me. I'm still in a Jakey haze.

Taylor fan site where fans are fine with Jake and not saying they hate him or he's stupid, etc. doesn't sound like a bad thing.

Damn, Anne Hathaway will be hosting SNL on 11/20. I was hoping Jake would get to host for L&OD. Oh well. Maybe he'll make a cameo.

Anne was a pretty good host her first time, so I hope they write some good sketches for her.

Monica, I stumbled on Taylor Swift's official message board, and there was no negativity about Jake. Except from people who wanted Jake for themselves :)

I'd say her young fans were more mature about this than some of Jake's allegedly mature fans.

This makes me sad: Variety is reporting that George Clooney will direct Ryan Gosling in the Farragut North movie.
