Born to Run?

Updated again: A couple of photos of Jake in Leadville, courtesy of twitter:

Update: Yup, Jake is in Leadville:

After leaving the assembly, we heard rumors of Hollywood stars in the mix. Turns out Jake Gyllenhaal of gay cowboy fame was up in the rafters in a big beard and hat. We haven’t figured out his role in this yet but the lowdown seems to be a Born to Run movie in the works. They aren’t filming the movie right now. I am thinking they are doing some scouting and maybe some “day in the life” stuff so they can then portray it in a film? Seems silly since its such an event in itself and doesn’t need to be acted in my opinion. Anyway, here is a back shot of him. He is in the hat with backpack.

And from another blogger:

Not sure what's going on with this race. I personally didn't guess that Lance Armstrong would try again, but he destroyed his own record in the LT100 bike race a week ago. Not sure why all the famous people are in town. Sitting here in the Provin' Grounds coffee shop just after the start of the LT100 run, and the star of Donnie Darko, Jarhead, Rendition, Jake G, and some other famous notables, have been sitting around the couch hunched over maps.

We know Jake is an avid runner, as well as a Bruce Springsteen fan and impersonator.

But rumor has it that Jake is in Leadville, Colorado, this weekend, attending the apparently legendary Leadville Trail 100/Race Across The Sky.

Jake is allegedly accompanying Christopher McDougall, author of "Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen. According to one blogger:

Jake Gyllenhaal was at the pre-race meeting in disguise of sorts. Actually, he blended very well with the trail crowd with a big beard. I think they are making a movie. Kind of cool.

And according to another tweeter, Jake was spotted at the Leadville 100 with McDougal scouting for a move of the book.

I know nothing about this kind of running or the author, though that tweeter doesn't seem too fond of him! Guess we'll find out pretty quickly if this is a true sighting or another case of mistaken identity - the race is scheduled to start at 2:45AM MDT!

Let's complete the post with what we know are actual Jake sightings: He was photographed by an enterprising blogger at the Chateau Marmont last week:

Here's a nice shot of Jake in Chicago for Source Code filming:

We know Jake spent much of his summer on Martha's Vineyard, where the Obamas are now. Here's Jake a few years back on the island. This was posted in February 2005. Not sure when it was taken:

If Jake will be there we will get pictures. Lets wait and see.

Although it looks like something Jake would love - a legendary race.

I have never heard of McDougall too - I did a brief check and I understand why this guy could interest Jake.

Thanks for the picture - although I am feeling always a bit uncomfortable watching pictures taken at places where he usually feels safe.

Gahhh! I hope this is not for a movie, if it's true.

Running in the mountain jungles of Mexico with a remote tribe of indians doesn't sound very inspiring, or interesting. But then, I'm not a runner. It sounds like Avatar meets Forrest Gump.

It'a time for Jake to play a really sexy bad guy. Or a really sexy dad/husband in a comedy. Or a really sexy police detective. OR a really sexy, mysterious drifter in a post apocalyptic Des Moines!...:)

Anonymous said...

Who knows if its for a movie, but you never know. Sometimes the movie you think you might not want is the one that gets you awards.
I've seen it happen with others.

Extra said...

Hmmmm, another bike movie rumor. It's sounds interesting but if HW wasn't interested in the Armstrong story, I can't see them greenlighting this project.

Jake will be playing a sexy viagra salesman in LOAD Bobbyanna!

That pic is uncomfortable Carla. reminds me of the pics that someone took of Jake and Chris looking at a laptop in front of some hotel.

mary said...

thanks uv hope the movie romor is just a romor too bobbyanna doesnt sound very interesting to me either how can you make a movie about a runner guess well find out soom enough

if jake is in co at the race well probably get some tweets or pictures

bobbyanna said...

"Jake will be playing a sexy viagra salesman in LOAD Bobbyanna!"

Yes he is! And "really sexy..."'s my favorite Jake of all! :)

FL said...

I don't think this is a "bike" movie...if at all. It seems to be about running. I get more of a docu vibe from Jake's presence in Colorado with the book author. Who knows.

I have zero problems with Jake pics taken by ordinary citizens because you know at least ordinary citizens aren't goading Jake for a reaction. So I say 'snap away fine folk'.

Extra said...

My bad FL, too early in the morning, it's obviously about running!

We will see if anything comes of it, Jake seemes to be interested in sport themed movies, Armstrong, Namath and now this.

If he is running today we sure will hear about it!

UltraViolet said...

I thought of a documentary, too, FL. Another tidbit from FB:

Leadville is under way. All our runner friends are doing well. Especially, brooks who is ahead of the pack right now. Wish them all the best of luck. Oh and jake gyllenhaal is here filming the born to run movie. Grant saw him at the coffee shop this morning.

Carla, this does seem a very Jake-like subject!

It'a time for Jake to play a really sexy bad guy.

I agree with this a hundredfold.

As for the picture - it's not like Jake is in a private place. It didn't bother me too much, obviously.

I love the way he looks in the Chicago pic, and the MV pic just makes me smile.

FL said...

Whatever Jake is doing with McDougall at Leadville, we're sure to find out - McDougall keeps a well-documented blog and Facebook. The latter where he mentions heading to Leadville for the 100 mile run.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

This sounds like something Jake definately would be interested in and it does have a documentary feel to it.

The pic doesn't other me, I've seen worst.

Thanks for posting the new/old pics of Jake, too bad he isn't on MV now with the President and the first family!

UltraViolet said...

Added a pic (from behind) and a couple more blog sightings to the post. Not sure what he's up to, but Jake is definitely there :)

FL said...

Hold on, hold on, he SHAVED? Between last night and today? Wowza!

FL said...

Oh nevermind. I think I'm looking at the wrong person. The guy with the brown fedora...that's not Jake? Looking down at his camera/light meter?

mary said...

looks like he might of shaved from the picture but hard to tell because its from behind but all the blog reports say he has abeard hope he did shave

UltraViolet said...

Jake's in the Stand Up To Cancer cap, on backwards, with the backpack. I think I still see the facial hair.

Anonymous said...

I like the sound of this Born to Run movie, and the book. A different viewpoint. I love beard on Jake, very earthy and sexy. :)

mary said...

maybe the beards for this movie/doc

FL said...

Yeah, I was looking at the picture on a very small monitor. Had to break out the big guns to see it properly/correctly. The backwards SU2C cap threw me. As did those cargo pants. 0_0

Anonymous said...

Can't see Jake playing Lance Armstrong in a movie if only for the fact that they look nothing alike.
I think they try to get someone in bio. movies who can kind of pass for the person.
I can think of some that didn't quite do that, but still don't think it would be something Jake will be doing. (as if i know anything..ha).

How did this Lance Armstrong stuff come up? Isn't Jake over in Co. with something to do with running? That's what is seems like from all these links and whatnot.

bobbyanna said...

Apparently Lance was in the Bicycle Race last week or last month. This weekend is about runners.

I'm just delighted Jake's there likely filming a documentary. And if they are doing preliminary work to actually making a movie, it looks like this movie may be Jake's directoral debut.

I've never known of him being so involved in actual production like this. He looks so "authentically" like a filmmaker. An Indie. :)!!!

It occurs to me, that Jake makes a real effort to stay grounded and not get all caught up in the commercial celebrity "treadmill." I love that about him.

Chica said...

I have never heard of McDougall either but he sounds fascinating.

So Jake is in Leadsville this weekend, very intersting especially if he is there to observe the race for a film or documentary.

Thanks for finding the pic of Jake there and posting it, and also linking to McDougall's FB, we should get confirmation on Jake and any upcoming film or doc. from him hopefully!

GB is definately the best place for all the late breaking Jake news, thanks!!!!!

I like the pic of Jake taken in Chicago earlier this year from SC, do we think we will se Jake clean-shaven like that again, LOL!!!!

The pic of Jake at the hotel doesn't really bother me, it's when the paps stalk and harrass him that bothers me the most.

I love that Jake seems grounded as well Bobbyanna:)

bobbyanna said...

I'm not bothered by the hotel pic either, chica. The Chateau Marmont isn't exactly the place to go if you want to be invisible, and either he didn't know or he didn't care about it.

Lola said...

As much as i love the beard im ready for a change, and hopefully jake is to and he'll shave it off soon. This movie/documentary isn't my type of thing but i like the thought of what bobbyanna said that this might be his directorial debute :)

bobbyanna said...

I've been studying the group picture of Jake w. backpack, etc. and a couple of the guys look familiar. David Modigliani and his crew? Not sure.

suvee said...

I've been to Leadville a couple of times in my life, and Jake's mountain man beard is kinda apropos. :)

I'd prefer to believe that this "Born to Run" movie project is indeed a documentary. Makes more sense IMO than a fictionalized film of the book. Bobbyanna, interesting idea...... is this possibly a Jake/David Modigliani collaboration?

And if Jake does put in appearance at the SUTC telethon, I'm expecting to see a clean shaven face!

I like the Chateau Marmont pic, doesn't bother me. Thanks, UV!

FL said...

Ohhhh so maybe that was Peter in the brown fedora in that pic. As I look at it again I can see it's probably him.

From FB:

Thank you racers and families for making this the biggest sales weekend EVER. By the way, Sawatch BC is so cool that Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard shop there- they were perusing the store this evening, in town to check out the 100. I had to drop names, 'cuz movie stars aren't usually seen around these parts.

UltraViolet said...

Yup, that looks like Peter. So this, whatever it is, is a family affair. Cool. Would be interesting if Jake's movie-making friends like Modigliani joined, too. He is a documentary director.

Of course, it doesn't seem like they had cameras and stuff for a current documentary, more like they were scouting places. So who knows.

GB is definately the best place for all the late breaking Jake news

Thanks, chica. It's always fun to have a scoop, for however long it lasts :)

Monica said...

UV, you deserve a medal.
I read about the book and the story is very interesting. Inspired me to read some more about it. thank you!
I love the idea of Jake with various equipment, camera ... perhaps his first work as director.

Jake and Peter are getting similar, like brothers! FL thanks!

One of Peter's uncles died in Vietnam. Does anyone know that?

UltraViolet said...

Thanks, Monica ;)

It is fascinating. An extreme sport like this is just the kind of thing Jake seems interested in.

I'm more intrigued by Jake's cameras and maps and wondering what exactly is going on. It's fun to think of him getting involved on a producing level or writing/directing. Who knows?

I don't think I knew that about Peter's uncle, no.

Carla said...

It would be great seeing Jake involved in the production prozess of a film.

I remember him being a kind of producer at the Moon project, although it looks like this one is going nowhere....

Josie said...

Wow, thanks for the scoop UV & FL! Love the first pic, even though you can't see Jake's face you can tell he is in scouting/filmmaker mode!

Thanks for finding and posting the Jake fan pic UV, I love Jake/fan pics.

The photo of Jake on the set of SC is a reminder that another Jake film is right around the corner!

The pic of Jake taken at Chateau Marmont doesn't bother me either, that place is crawling with celebs and I think they expect to be papped or fans taken pics when they are there.

If Jake, Peter and maybe David in Leadville to watch the race then it's quite possible that they have a documentary in mind.

I know that Jake has a production Co. called Nine Stories, but I think I read that Maggie and Peter have their own production Co. as well.

Remember Jake attending the screening of the Pat Tillman documentary on MV and meeting with the director after? IMO, he is intersting in directing or producing.

I almost forgot about Jake and UMP Carla, I would love for that to happen.

Lost count on how many times I watched both LOAD trailers, Jake and Anne have incredible chemistry and November can't come soon enough for me!

Anonymous said...

see where Harry at cool news has made his comment about the LAOD trailer.
Thinking of the review by someone saying there's so much to the movie that to judge it by the trailers is not what should be done. Wait until the movie.

yes it would be exciting if jake is going to start doing some directing and this would be his type of film/doc to do hope we find out soon

I could see how someone could turn into a wimpering mess looking at him! I could see it. I wouldn't do it, but I could see it...(sigh!) And he is so tanned! I love his colors!(Second pic.)

Facebook post byRunLikeAMother confirmed he was at an aid station last night with McDougall. Two of her commenters asked if he was shirtless, another one had just watched Brothers, most of them were gushing. She responded:
"Sorry ladies: he had on shirt--and fleece jacket. But v. cute and taller than I expected."

Thanks, FL - added those photos to the post. And to echo - the arms, the arms!

I laughed at the FB commenters, Bobbyanna. So shallow! ;)

Have fun in Palm Springs, Mary. So jealous - I love it there.

Josie and Carla, I do wonder what, if anything, will happen with UMP.

suvee said...

My God, he looks so good! Thanks, FL!

I'm amazed at how often we hear people say he is taller than they imagined. (Didn't Sam Mendes say that when he saw Jake on the London stage, pre Jarhead?) I know that it's difficult to judge an actor's RL height just based on their on screen appearance, but there's nothing about Jake that says short/small man IMO. Oh well....

Enjoy Palm Springs, Mary!

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

Thanks for all the updates everyone, he looks so yummy!

I do wonder when people say that he is taller than they thought after meeting him, he always looked tall to me on screen and in photos,

Have fun in Pam Springs Mary!

On the height thing could it be folks have read about so many actors being short maybe 5'7" & under when they see someone around 6' tall they're surprised.

So Jake is in Leadville with Peter possibly working on a new project?

What exciting news, I know a little bit about McDougall, so I hope all the speculation about a documentary turns out to be true!

Love the twicpic of Jake, his arms look amazing!

Anonymous said...

One of at least 10 speculations about this.
Jake is an avid reader and he may of read the McDougall book and got in touch with him.
And here they are. It may have something to do with a documentary or a movie or he just had a change to be there.

Anonymous said...

"chance" to be there.

UltraViolet said...

We're having some work done at my house and everything is all torn apart. So I haven't done much surfing around. Don't think anything new popped up but let us know if you hear something!

Hope everyone had a good weekend.

Carla said...

Thanks for the pics - and I can just repeat - his arms are just...*WOW*

Lets wait and see whether his visit was work related or just some days of having fun.

Scott Feinberg has made a new prediction list for the Oscars and I am happy to see him involving LAOD with picture, director, Anne & Jake as frontrunners. Yes, it is early and many things will change during the next months but good to see the buzz is still building.

Scott Feinberg

UltraViolet said...

That is good to see, Carla. Fingers crossed the buzz continues once more people have seen the film!

A report from someone who saw Jake at breakfast yesterday at the Tennessee Pass Cafe, in response to whether he's good-looking:

Jami, he was MUCH better looking in real life, pimpin a beard and was jacked!!!! I think he could have convinced Chris to go to Brokeback Mountain!

Tweety said...

Love that sighting, and yes he is jacked based on that twicpic!

LOL at this tweet:

halstead21: When people said Jake Gyllenhaal was there at Leadville, I just assumed they were mistaking me for him.

Thanks for the link Carla, I hope the buzz and good reviews continue.

bobbyanna said...

I found this from the blog of a woman reporter with the examiner.com out of Denver:

"Born to Run" was born to hit the big screen. Back in February McDougall told RunColo that the producers of the Jason Bourne series had already picked up the film rights. "

If this is true, we may know Jake's next project. Makes sense if you recall how he kept working out after the PoP publicity junketing, etc.

FL said...

that the producers of the Jason Bourne series

Interesting. The Exec. Producer of the last two Bourne movies was none other than Doug Liman.

UltraViolet said...

Veddy interesting, Bobbyanna and FL. Tried to survey Liman's recent blogs, but no hints there. I wonder if he was on the Vineyard this summer when Jake was there. I know he ran the Chilmark Road Race.

McDougall is supposed to have a book signing tonight in Boulder. Wonder if Jake will be there or if anyone will ask about the movie.

bobbyanna said...

Don't know if he was on MV, but I think Liman's pretty pre-occupied with "Fair Game." I think it's making the festival circuit and there's Oscar buzz for it. Not sure when it's scheduled to open. Sean Penn and Naomi Watts in the Joe Wilson/Valerie Plame/CIA leak story.

The reporter, Bogin, who's blog is RunWrite says the McDougall book was "written to be a movie!" or words to that effect. But all then, these people are passionate about running. (I'm still worried that it's Avatar meets Forrest Gump!).

UltraViolet said...

Oh dear god, Bobbyanna, what a description! I'm choking on my Diet Coke here.

Apparently, Jake and Pter are still in LEadville:

In line behind Jake gyllenhall and Peter sarsgaard in a coffee shop in Leadville Colorado. Too chicken to ask for a picture.
7 minutes ago via Facebook for iPhone

His friend urged him to take a pic!

One more tidbit:

met Jake Gyllenhall this weekend in Leadville at Safeway. Yeah you bet I asked for his autograph! And yes he is almost as good looking in person as the big screen!

Almost - how dare she! ;)

UltraViolet said...

Forgot to say that I love the idea of Jake at Safeway, hee.

Jake has made it to the Final Four of that PopSugar shirtless contest. I think he's up against one of those Twi-too-hards, so he'll probably lose.

FL said...

And yes he is almost as good looking in person as the big screen!

Surely she transposed the words in that sentence. We all know he is MUCH better looking in person than on screen. Did I say much?

Very cool that Jake and Peter are in Colorado! Love seeing the pics and reading all the sightings. Thanks for all the updates!

I just got back from Chicago myself...such a fantastic city...and I saw The Bean! Made me think of Jake of course. :D

bobbyanna said...

Indeed, FL. As I said earlier, it's enough to make a person whimper. I didn't whimper, but I've seen other people whimper. Heh.

I didn't. OK. All I did was shove my fist in my mouth, and bite down hard, and sort of sob...very quietly.

Sorry about the Diet Coke, UV! I love Jake being in Safeway, too!:)

All I did was shove my fist in my mouth, and bite down hard, and sort of sob...very quietly.

Lolol...too funny.

Carla said...

Mmmh, Forrest Gump won 6 Oscars and Avatar won 3 Oscars and is the highest grossing film of all time (?)...so it could be worse..:-))

But I also fail to see how the book could be translated into a exciting film. A documentary would make more sense.

I have learned to be patient when it comes to Jakes projects. I remember the summer when he was seen with Lance Armstrong on a nearly daily basis and everyone thought it was for the biopic - and then nothing happened. (Although I was happy that the Armstrong film did not become a reality).

bobbyanna said...

"I have learned to be patient when it comes to Jakes projects"

Very wise words, Carla! I agree.

You know, after reading Feinberg's piece I was thinking. Inception will be a huge Oscar favorite, and so will Leo, Sean Penn, and Christopher Nolan. It's still early.

I'd love for Jake to get nominated again. I have a feeling that when Anne goes out to promote this movie, she'll be singing his praises...the way he always praises his co-stars.

I'm getting notrhing done today.

All this speculation has got my imagination going, thanks for all the updates and sightings everyone!

It does sound like they are there to do a bit of observing. The Avatar/Forest Gump comparison isn't a bad one but like others, I see this as a documentary.

It's good to see Jake's smiling but rather bushy face!

Jake at Safeway? I guess there were no Whole Foods near::))

I wonder how long Jake and Peter wil be in Co??

LOL@ Twi-too hards YV, no one has a chance against them!

I don't like to speculate about the Oscars, it's too soon but it's great that Jake is being mentioned as a possible B. Actor.

bobbyanna said...

Just as an FYI: Doug Liman is also busy with a TV series called Covert Affairs for the USA network.

Monica said...

I think that Born To Run seems to be a story much more interesting than Joe Namath, Damm Yankees and the film of the moon. But you need the right people.
Please, I do not want to see Doug Liman directing it. Perhaps Paul Greengras, since we are talking about the involvement of producers of Bourne in the project.

Well, but I have the same patience that Carla.

Thanks for the link, Carla. It is too early for Oscar, but I'm glad to see the name of jake in the list of frontrunners.

I saw this weekend Dr. Parnassus. The movie has a great cast, and because of these actors that the film is good, but not more than that.

Anonymous said...

'Covert Affairs" has gotten very good reviews. I've seen it - I like it. It's on Tuesday night and has been renewed.

I think the Joe Namath movie could be very good. If you're not familiar with him then maybe it wouldn't seem interesting but for the folks who rem. his football career and his life (which Is still going on...)..there's a lot there to make a movie that would have to have an excellent performance by the lead and we know Jake can do that.

An updated "Damn Yankees" could be fun and it's a Musical. That would be just one more thing that Jake can show people he can do.
If not that then something Musical because it's something he wants to do and there's an audience out there who has no idea he could do it and continue to show what an all around great talent he is.

Even if it doesn't come to pass (but hope it does) Oscar talk about Jake (and Anne and the movie)
is still a good thing.
Even if people don't see the movie or just hear this in passing it gives them the thought that this must be a performance worthy of mention.

They're not in Leadville for no reason so it may be for a movie or a documentary or just Jake having another experience at something he is interested in.
We'll eventually find out.

Annie

Monica said...

I'm not saying that these projects would not work. Joe Namath can become a good movie.
While I believe that Jake would do a great job in Damm Yankees, the idea of being a remake scares me a little.

And the movie of the Moon is interesting, especially for apparently having his involvement as a producer, but Doug Liman is not one of my favorite directors.

Born To Run is something that caught my attention, but like the above projects, it needs the right people.

Sag actor said...

Not a fan of Liman either and when I heard about his attachment to the the moon movie I was hoping that his busy schedule would mean another director would take over that project.(Even though he obviously spent so much of his time and energy on the project)

Jake and Peter may be interested in bringing he McDougall story to the screen in some fashion or they may simply be fans of his, we will find out soon enough.

I was never thrilled with the rumored Armstrong movie but I would love to see the Namath story on the big screen and I think Jake would do a great job.

UltraViolet said...

Looks like Jake didn't go to McDougall's book event. Someone on FB posted that Jake came through her line. She said he was very cool and cracking joked. Someone else reported Jake on his plane.

I'm computer-less again tonight so not sure what else is out there.

It's hard to know what project Jake will or should do next. But I'd like to hear something concrete.

UV said...

That first FB reference was about the woman's line at the airport. Sorry.

Jake had said Armstrong had called him because he knew he was a bike rider.
Also think if there was a movie someday it would be someone who was not a well-known actor and someone who resembled him to some extent.

Carla said...

The "Moon" project sounds interesting, also not so sure about Liman. He can be good - "Fair Game" is getting some positive buzz or the first "Bourne" film but also crap like "Jumper".

I agree with Monica - "Damn Yankees" is a remake and I am getting the feeling the audience wants to see more original material. Also I have read J. Carrey is involved in another new project so it does not look like anything will happen soon.

Just watched "Inception" this weekend - a really thought provoking film with an excellent cast - especially Tom Hardy and G.J. Levitt - would love to see Jake working with Nolan one day.

Interesting that the new Liman movie is so close to Source Code. All the more incentive for tptb to release SC sooner rather than later!

Jake looks hot even when he is impersonating Grizzly Adams!

I guess it's safe to say that UMP will be on the back burner indefinately, Liman has his plate full for now.

Yeah, I do hope SC is released first UV, I remember when we read about the new Liman film and commented that it was similar to SC.

Thanks for the FB/Twitter updates, looked like Jake was heading out of Co, I hope really do hope that the reason he and Peter were there was interest in a McDougall movie, his life and story sounds fascinating.

Inception is one of the best films that I have seen this year Carla, for those who haven't seen it yet please do. I'm not a big fan of Leo but he is so good and the supporting cast is awesome, Nolan has become one of my favorite directors.

Ugh, I don't even bother voting in any poll that include that annoying, over-rated vampire and werewolf:(

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Chicago Get real, I love it there!

bobbyanna said...

Liman's UMP sounds similar to
Moon, and now it was announced yesterday, he's just signed on to direct a movie that sounds very similar to Source Code! And that was pointed out by an entertainment news outlet.

Strange. Liman has some really good hits and some really bad misses. Uneven.

Fair Game ought to be good with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts doing the "lifting." Have to check to see who wrote the screenplay.

bobbyanna said...

Oops!!! Sorry! I posted before I read what UV said about SC. etc.

No need to delete, Bobbyanna!

Looks like Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame wrote their own story. They are credited with two other writers. (Jez and John Henry Butterworth - for real. Those are their names!)
