Party pics

Update: Jake Gyllenhaal with Jerry Bruckheimer at the Los Angeles Kings/San Jose Sharks game on Tuesday, January 19:

Jake and Jerry chat with Vince Vaughn:

A few more shots of Jake attending the CAA pre-Golden Globes party on Friday night at the Buffalo Club.

Figured I'd gussy up this post with some old Jake photos I hadn't seen before. The first two are from 2005, Jarhead and BBM promotion time, maybe in Toronto?

The second one is from an interesting French interview focusing on Jarhead. I think Jake says he became an actor because when he was young, he was put in a cage and fed peanuts. Hee. Again, any French help is appreciated.

This one is from the site for Johan Bruyneel, who was the director of Lance Armstrong's Tour de France team in 2006, the year Jake went along for the ride:

According to E!, Jake will be at the telethon for Haiti being organized by George Clooney:

Other mega-celebs who will present and/or help in the phone banks are Jennifer Aniston, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brad Pitt, Anna Kendrick, Sandra Bullock, Zac Efron, Bradley Cooper, Renée Zellweger, Chris Pine, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Colin Farrell, Jon Hamm, Gabby Sidibe and Emily Blunt, among many others.

Hope they raise a lot of money - the situation in Haiti is dire.

RIP to Kate MCGarrigle, folksinger and songwriter, mother to Rufus and Martha Wainwright and sister of Anna.

One of her songs, called "Talk to Me of Mendocino," was mentioned in an obituary I read. I checked it out and it's quite beautiful. Here's Kate and Anna doing the song. Linda Rondstadt also performed it. Poignant lyrics:

I bid farewell to the state of ol' New York
My home away from home
In the state of New York I came of age
When first I started roaming
And the trees grow high in New York state
And they shine like gold in Autumn
Never had the blues from whence I came
But in New York state I caught 'em

Talk to me of Mendocino
Closing my eyes I hear the sea
Must I wait, must I follow?
Won't you say "Come with me?"

And it's on to Southbend, Indiana
Flat out on the western plain
Rise up over the Rockies and down on into California
Out to where but the rocks remain

And let the sun set on the ocean
I will watch it from the shore
Let the sun rise over the redwoods
I'll rise with it till I rise no more

Talk to me of Mendocino
closing my eyes, I hear the sea
Must I wait, must I follow?
Won't you say "Come with me?"

Another unusual talented family like the Gyllenhaals. Those are indeed soul stirring lyrics. RIP Kate. I'm delighted and proud Jake's stepped up to the plate and helping out when he didn't need to.

Can people outside the US call?

Happy to see that Jake attended the pre-GG party on Friday, hope he enjoyed himself. Thanks for finding the pics of Jake from 2005 for the BBM/Jarhead promo in Toronto (Yes, I think they are from Toronto). And the pic with Lance! I remember that summer of him Lance and Matt, thanks!

What sad news regarding Kate McGarrigle. Thanks for posting the lyrics to "talk to Me of Mendocino", beautiful and poignant.

Losing a parent is so incredibly hard, my heart goes out to the Wainwright family.

Glad to hear that Jake will be helping out with the Hatian relief effort on Friday.

Thanks. That's a beautiful song, UV. How wonderful that Kate left such a gift to share. Sending loving thoughts to hr family.

I am really happy Jake is participating in the Haitian Relief efforts.

Thanks for the party pics of Jake, too.

Good question about whether the telethon will be seen/available to people not in the US, sheba. I think it's being shown in Canada, but I don't know where else. Will let you know if I hear.

The song lyrics really did get to me. I am not really familiar with the McGarrigle oeuvre. Mostly, I remember them from old TV talk shows.

Party pics of Jake are always a good thing :)

What a loss and talent. Those lyrics are beautiful UV. My prayers go out to Rufus, Martha and the entire family.

Happy to hear that Jake will be participating in the telethon. The donations have been pouring in but it's been difficult to get the supplies to the people due to the roads being destroyed.

We can all use some more Jake party pics and new/old pics, thanks.

Some people are coming down on Wycliffe Jean bcz he said they need to evacuate the capitol and move people out further so they can get in there and clean up. They need to do recovery, too. It would be easier to get aid to people if they set up emergency shelter operations, in outlying areas. There are lots of unsafe buildings that are housing aide workers, too. I never thought anything could be worse than Katrina, but this is just a nightmare.

I think the people who are going to be on that telethon for Haiti are all contributing money, too.

It's unfathomable and really hard to get my head around. The Tsunami in 2004, Katrina, China earthquake, Italy, India and now this.

Where I work people are mobilising to do lots of fundraising activities to send money out to Haiti, it's really heartwarming when we as a people show our humanity to help without reward.

Also thanks for new Jake pics. I like the V neck shirt. Next time, some with less clothes on please ;DD

I heard about Segal and Parker earlier FL. I'm not familiar with Carl smith but I'm a fan of June and of Course Johnny.

Thanks for the Jake party pics, he looked like he had a great time!

Scott Brown just won Ted Kennedy's Senate seat in Massachusettes, Goddamnit.

FL said...

Martha Coakley's negative campaigning did her in. :-D

bobbyanna said...

I'm mystified how these people (from the WH on down to the Coakly people)can be so completely out of touch. This is the same crap that happened with New Jersey. Corzine's campaign was a joke!

Just wait. Michigan is going to lose the governor's seat to a Conservative in November. Would you believe the Democratic "front runner" just dropped out? He couldn't raise any money. No one heard of him.

He was Lt. Governor for 8 years and he was a career politician who no one cared about. But it was "his turn" and the party hacks and insiders ignored the downside.

If the Massachusetts race was so important, why was it run the way they ran it? If they thought this negative stance was a "winning strategy" then we are in deep trouble.

I'm upset. When Howard Dean was running the DNC, he knew what was happening state by state and he knew how to organize. You might not be a Dean fan, but he knew what to do wwith the Democratic Party machinery to come up with the wins we needed.

OK. I'm done.

Definitely a depressing evening for me in Massachusetts. But Jake is apparently having fun - several tweets of him at the LA Kings/San Jose Sharks game. (That's the NHL - hockey, for those who might not know.)

This story about the competition between Jake and Tobey is mostly old news. But there are a couple of newish quotes, including this one:

Gyllenhaal smiles as he says: “Neither Tobey nor I ever pretended like there wasn’t great admiration and competition and I think that made for the experience. Really, we made a relationship and it always felt close. He would call me and if he wanted to work out, we did. We played basketball together. In fact, I tore both ligaments in my leg and ankle because of it.”

He laughs. “Actually, what am I talking about? That hurt! S***w him!”

UltraViolet said...

This forum post laughs about Jake doing the "keys to the game."

If he really did read them, I hope someone got it on tape! (Also, as in most forums, please try to ignore some of the comments.)

Anonymous said...

What are these "keys to the game?"

I don't understand.

UltraViolet said...

Oh, before a sporting event, one of the commentators usually lists the key elements for each team's strategy. So for hockey, it would be something like:

The Kings have to contain Joe HockeyGuy, the Sharks leading scorer.

And they have to make sure not to give up short-handed goals.

The Sharks have to try to rattle Jim KingsGoalie
and try to keep the Kings first line in check.

I updated the post to include a picture of Jake - looks like he was at the game with Jerry Bruckheimer.

Oh, and Vince Vaughn was there, too.

I'm sure Stephanie will have nicer versions soon :)

Jake has also done a Red Cross commercial to benefit Haiti.

"Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal came separately and were such pros." (Reese and Jake recently broke up.)

You summed up my feelings pretty much Bobbyanna, and may I just add: SHIT!

The Coakley campaign was poorly run and disorganized. Democrats that are coming up for re-election are screwed if they don't get their act together.

Sigh. At least Jake had fun at the hockey game and there are pics, and he's wearing a leather jacket, so that makes me feel better. And he's made a commercial for Haiti relief.

Chica, that's a great observation about 1994. IMHO, things are SO bad,it's just inexcusable, unacceptable,to blow political capital. The country's in a "triage" situation...if I'm using that term correctly, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist, (wanted to keep Jake in the conversation...:))to figure out why people are angry.

Jerry Bruckheimer has about 20 productions "in development" right now, so I'm glad Jake is hanging out with him.

Usually in every election not connected to the President the "other party" will win some of them.
If anyone thought the President - any President could come in and in a year clean up what had happened 8 or more years before aren't paying attention. Something like the hate crimes bill took 10 years to finally be a law.
One problem is the right-wing Republicans took hold and the press went right along with them and their lies as in they gave them the impression of being legitimate. They'd be interviewed and people sitting across from them rarely spoke up and confronted them.
The President thought he could work with some of the Republicans. But the ones that might of were too scared of the right-wing they did nothing. if the President held up a piece of paper and said he had the cure for Cancer - they'd yell "no". Their main thing is to block the President on everything and not work with him to maybe change something that they felt could be better and he might agree with.

And also what's the fascination with seeing pictures of Jake (a camera can catch something in a second that isn't seen at all by the people with them) & stating he must of been drinking a lot, or drunk. Maybe some won't be happy until they see him stumble and fall in a drunker stupor.

UltraViolet said...

I forgot to say hello to Rosa. Good to see you :).

I think Martha didn't get out there and speak to the people, until it was too late, literally or figuratively - and also the blocking of Obama's health care bill figured prominently in this race. It does need work IMO, but you've got to start somewhere with a national health plan. I wish we could work together. I think where Martha is in the heart of Democrat country, she had it made. As Bobbyanna said, this doesn't bode well for the rest of the country. :(

You watch. New York's next. Is there anyone here, who thinks David Paterson is going to get re-elected? Anyone? Anyone?

Michigan will elect a new governor in ten months. The state Democratic Party has no candidate. Oh, wait. I forget his name, but someone just set up an "exploratory committee."

In other "news," I read somewhere that Joseph Gordon Levitt might be the new Spiderman. Except that I also read they were going back in time to Peter Parker as a teenager. Thus Zack Efron might be the new Spiderman,...unless it's Shia LeBeouf. Unless you search twitter, where a lot of people are convinced it will be Jake! LOL!

I'd like Jake to be a surprise villain. Maybe the hot, sexy police detective who's really a serial killer.

(Why am I so 'wired' today?)

From the outside looking in Coakley came across as a self-entitled, arrogant clueless politician . There had to have been a better candidate to fill that Senate seat. The Democrats are in big trouble, and it's their fault. Where is the Democratic leadership? Health care/reform is important but other issues were pushed aside and all energy and time was spent on it. Now we have a watered down version of the Health care bill that may never get passed.

What a joke/ Ok, enough.

Jerry creepy looking but he Jake look like they had fun at the game last night. I don't think Jake looks drunk in these pics, maybe a bit tired or not well? Although he looked fine last night.

I know i'm probably late here but...

I re-watched Brothers this past weekend (I think reading the script and watching the original affected the first viewing) and thought that Sam Sheppard was grossly overlooked. He was really good and should have gotten more notices.

The more I think about it, the more I think Tobey was actually the worst part of the movie. I don't mean to insult him. I don't believe, generally, that acting should be veiwed as a zero-sum game where one wins and one loses, but it's just what I kept thinking.

For example, Jake's performance despite being less showy (as many have noted) is still nuanced and rich with depth. What I mean is that the audience can assume certain things about Tommy Cahill and his past relationships with his father/sister-in-law just by watching how they all interact with one another. It's a less-is-more approach that adds to the performance's believability. You get that same believability with Natalie and Sam Sheppard during their scenes with Jake.

Yet, despite the dark places Tobey's Sam goes to (and with some affect IMO), you never really believe the relationship aspects...

You never sense the chemistry with the daughters; you can't picture him and Natalie being teenage sweethearts; in the scene where his father is talking to him, while Sam is fixing his truck, you don't sense a close relationship --- as had been explained through out the film.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

BTW, my sister really liked the film. She was shocked how much she did (she's not a Jake fan or anything, we never talk about him together). She's watched several other newer films over the past months and considered Brothers the best of them all.

I think Brothers may find a larger audience on DVD.

UltraViolet said...

Brothers is coming out in the UK on Friday, and I've read a few reviews that mention Tobey's overacting. Most have praise for Jake and all the actors.

I've read a lot of reviews saying there's no chemistry between Portman and Maguire. I thought they were believable, but I could see the criticism.

I always found that scene with Sam Shepard and Tobey fixing the truck so odd. Tobey's doing the wide, crazy-eyes thing (though a bit subdued). And I know it's supposed to be awkward. But it just fell flat to me.

I read a post on Hollywood Elsewhere that Academy voters can't think of 10 movies to fill in for Best Picture. Made me have a glimmer of (irrational) hope that Brothers would get in.

Tweety said...

I love that October sky clip UV, he was so young, love that movie.

I saw the tweets of Jake at that game had, no idea Jerry was there with him!

I agree with others here regarding the situation with the Democratic party. They are in a whole heap of trouble, Howard Dean where are you???

I wasn't that impressed with Tobey's performance either Brothers spy. I bought the chemistry between him and Nat but I didn't feel any connection or chemistry with Sam Shepard who like you said should have received more praise.

Jake's performance was layered and had depth, his Tommy was very compelling and real. The critics noted the same.

I saw that bit on Hollywoodelsewhere too UV. One critic even voted for Drag me to hell! I would love for Brothers to sneak on that list.

Great news about Jake and the telethon and filming the commercial for the Red Cross. Things will get worse before they get better there.

bobbyanna said...

I guess this gives them an excuse to nominate Nine? Ugh!

Brothers should be on the list...I would love for Jake to get nominated, too. He's been seriously overlooked. I think he deliberately campaigns for other people and overlooks himself!

I know a lot of people thought it was too gross, but I honestly think District Nine, should also make the list. (I agree about Sam Shepherd. Actually, Mare Winningham, too.)

I think Jake supplies the chemistry with whoever is in his scenes. He really connected with Natalie and the girls. But he also made his scenes with Tobey & with Sam very powerful.(OT but in a recent Brothers interview Natalie said she definitely wants to have kids....:)

Martha Cokley blew the 30 point lead she had in December and lost by 5 points yesterday. Unbelievable. Why did President Obama let Dean go? Who is the Democratic party chairman anyway? We are in a mess.

Obama is already conceding parts of the health care reform act. During an interview with George S. earlier today, he talked about both parties getting together to pass the pre-existing diseases clauses, small business help and one more thing I can't remember. Da*n!

The Republicans are walking in lockstep to defeat all Democratic agendas and they will if we can't stop them. They intend to destroy the government, get rid of all entitlement programs, regulations and reform, or so some book says: I forget the title.

The Democrats have messed up but I'm hoping that Obama will lead more this year...'cause I feel 1994 coming 'round again.

I've been waiting for President Obama to take more lead in the insurance reform process, get on TV and explain the da*ned health care reform proposals to us, stop listening to Rahm and Geitner with their backroom banking and US Congress deals, and be the President I want him to be. We haven't had the transparency in government he promised us during the campaign. It's as if he were elected, went to DC and vanished.

It's bad in the country and in DC but if he doesn't have an opportunity to effect some changes, the disenfranchised middle and working classes in this country may put the Bolsheviks to shame.

Oh well.

Well, according to Star, bobbyanna, both Sean and Tobey worked the room for Jake at a Chateau Marmont party (maybe that Marion Cotillard one?), persuading a group of models to talk to Jake, who was shy at first and then got into it.

Oh, and another rag said that Tobey and his wife set Jake up with a Reese lookalike, but with curly hair. Also for a double date at the CM.

Yeah, I know. Probably not a word of it is true!

Cute quote from Gemma Arterton about Jake. She's starring in a play in London:

I really love coming back to the stage,” she told us at the after-show bash in the Trafalgar Hotel’s Rockwell Bar.

“It is a much more rounded experience to working in films, which can be quite airy fairy, although working with Jake Gyllenhaal was great. He is lovely!”

doubt if it's true. Those folks at those places do sit around and make up things. Rem. seeing someone who worked at one of them saying they sit around and think what would sound good or bad without very little if anything that they actually know.
They see something mentioned in another mag. or on the internet and off they go.

Who cares if it's true! Sheesh! It's innocent enough!

Yeah, this is not scandalous stuff. Apparently, Star also says Reese and Jake are talk, ing, and she regrets breaking up with him.

Probably also totally made up, though the last part is not hard to believe!
