Okja Okay

We don't know if Jake Gyllenhaal will be on the Croisette for the Friday premiere of Okja, but the film is already making its presence known in Cannes.

At Cannes, IMR International will be selling the rights to The Sisters Brothers, the Jaques Audiard movie Jake will be filming this summer.

The Sisters Brothers is scheduled to begin principal photography in Spain and Romania next month and is based on Patrick deWitt’s darkly comic novel about a pair of brothers who wreaked havoc during the California Gold Rush.

Phoenix and Reilly play the eponymous killers – one of whom enjoys his murderous lifestyle while the other longs for a quieter life.

Everything changes when they are assigned to track down a gold prospector, played by Gyllenhaal, working for their mysterious employer the Commodore.

What do folks think jake's presence at tiff will be? fly in the day of and go to premiere and fly out or be around for a bit and do other events?

Anonymous said...

TIFF Press Conference on September 9 at 11:00 a.m., so Jake will be there at least overnight. Also, he'll appear on Today Show on September 15. RH

Diana said...

How nice of the TIFF team to choose my birthday for the Press Conference *lol* it´s on my list....

How can I generally find out about the upcoming guests on the Today Show? I have tried to find out several times but never found the right page. I am keeping an eye on several talkshows, breakfast shows etc., haven´t found anything so far.

There are more and more posts on twitter and facebook from the promotion team. I am wondering whether full promo will kick off with TIFF or before that. There´s not much time left before the movie comes out....

Anonymous said...

Usually people involved in the film will attend the press conference. They do a photo shoot, then there are individual interviews done with print, internet, and TV journalists, international press as well as North American, for release later. It is a very busy schedule.

Then there's a Gala screening and usually a VIP dinner for cast, crew and other VIPs from the Festival, etc. Usually the average stay at most festivals is about 2-3 days. Rarely 3, but that's about it.

Unless an actor/producer/director has business meetings at the festival, they rarely just hang out. It is true though that sometimes the actors and the director, writer, etc. may stay for other screenings of their movie to do audience Q & A, so that might extend the visit to 3 days.

Anonymous said...

Is stronger off-sale?

Anonymous said...

It seems stronger is sold out or "not many left" but none show up.
Is the press conference for industry pass holders (and above) or buyer etc. pass holders (and above)?

beyond that, it doesn't seem like there will be any chances to see Jake. I guess with TIFF you have to spend in the $250-$550 range for that.

Unless you're lucky and run into them getting coffee or something?

TIFF, jeez.

Anonymous said...

Well, you might run into him at a restaurant, but in all likelihood, you are going to have to position yourself at the entrance, or along the red carpet at the theatre, or the hotel lobby of his hotel...if you know where he is staying, in order to see him. Unless you have a ticket to the Gala or a screening where he shows up to do a Q & A. The Media are the only ones allowed into press conferences and they have special credentials that admit them. The most rewarding way is be lucky enough to see the movie and have him there for a Q & A.

Anonymous said...

The other screening is at 10:45 the same morning the press conference is at 11.

Unless the press conference doesn't go for as long and then they have a chance to drop by after?

All of the other screenings aside from this are for press.

Anonymous said...

Will the cast sit in the audience at Roy Thompson typically? Or just be on stage and then go to a green room?

Anonymous said...

When a screening is designated as a "press & Industry" screening. It doesn't mean civilians can't go. It just means they have priority. Unless it is a private screening and they aren't selling tickets to the general public. But you can attend any screening you can buy a ticket for.

Happy Labor Day to all who celebrate!!! I'm having the most absolutely perfect weather here in Atlanta. Seriously.

Cast rarely stay to watch their movie. They introduce it, then they slip out, and come back for Q & A.

Canuck_Cutie said...

Pretty much all the premiere screenings I attended at TIFF since 2002, the celebs stayed for the movie. Johnny Depp was a notable exception. If it's a second screening on another day sometimes the director and some cast will attend to do an Intro and come back for a Q&A but in my experience it's rare they don't stay for the movie.

So many of the Q&A's over the years have made me cringe that I actually wish they'd do away with it - or just left a TIFF employee ask questions.

New news:

Speaking of upcoming projects, Jake and Riva mean business: they'll produce Michael Showalter's new movie about the real life of a woman bank robber.

Coming off “The Big Sick,” the most successful independent movie of the summer, Michael Showalter has found a new project. He’s signed a developmental deal with Fox Searchlight to direct a contemporary Western-slash-thriller called “The Last Ride of Cowboy Bob”.
The story will follow a real-life ’90s bank robber named Peggy Jo Tallas, who got away with her heists by dressing up as a man, aka “Cowboy Bob.” (...)
Fox Searchlight will finance the indie film. It will be produced by Riva Marker and Jake Gyllenhaal through their company Nine Stories.
“She was one of the most unusual bank robbers of her generation, a modern-day Bonnie without a Clyde,” is one way Peggy Jo was described. The movie will have both comedic and dramatic touches (a la the Coen brothers).

And Netflix will stream "Hondros":

Netflix has picked up worldwide streaming rights to “Hondros,” the award-winning documentary that premiered at this spring’s Tribeca Film Festival.(...)
The sale to Netflix closed in the six-figure range. The film is also in talks with other distributors to screen in theaters later this year for an Oscars-qualifying run.
“Hondros” is produced by Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker through their Manhattan-based company Nine Stories.
Executive producers include Bold Films’ Gary Michael Walters and Michel Litvak. Jamie Lee Curtis served as a co-executive producer.
“Hondros” received strong reviews last spring, and it went on to win the audience award at Tribeca. It’s also scheduled to screen at the Hamptons Film Festival in October.

Here's another new interview. The highlight (for me) is Jake saying all that matters to him is for Jeff to know that he tried.

"It's a story of what it takes to move beyond a dark place into light, into hope, into life," says Gyllenhaal, who spent months with Bauman to prepare for the role. The two are now close friends. Bauman, 31, considers Gyllenhaal an older brother. "When we started to hang out, I'd catch him trying to copy some of my mannerisms," Bauman recalls of working with and getting to know Gyllenhaal. "He put so much effort into the story."

- Very mild spoilers (if any) in the write-up. In any case, I took them off:

(...) Gyllenhaal spent months studying the very particular ways Bauman moves. He also worked with Bauman's physical therapist at Spaulding and was fitted for a pair of Genium prosthetics, identical to Bauman's. Gyllenhaal says he's awed by what amputees like Bauman must accomplish.
"Jeff had to recalibrate everything in his body and mind so that he could walk with these new legs," he says. "That process was very important for me to understand."

But Gyllenhaal likely will never be easy on himself. His dedication to the art and craft of acting and to the characters he portrays won't allow it. Doubt also drives him. Would he have been strong enough to face what Bauman endured? He doesn't think so. Was all the work he did to prepare for this part enough, having never lived with pain like Bauman's?
"That's what I grappled with, that I'll never be able to understand," says Gyllenhaal.
So he pushed himself as hard as he could and now has to trust that he got it right.
"It's inexplicable how much responsibility I felt and still feel towards Jeff," he says. "I think he knows that. I hope he knows that. All that matters is that he knows how much I tried."

The film -- the first made by Gyllenhaal's production company, Nine Stories -- does not flinch from Bauman's pain. (...) The film depicts the removal of Bauman's sutures during an agonizingly long scene. (...) The surgeon in the scene was Bauman's real-life surgeon, Jeffrey Kalish, MD, of Boston Medical Center. "It was very important that we elongate that scene, that we show the pain that he goes through," says Gyllenhaal. "Things like this bombing happen in the world all the time, but what we don't hear so much about is the recovery of the people who survive, how their lives are changed, what they feel."

Being the lead, Jake's late-night talkshow appearances will air the week of 18-22 September, mostly (I'm hoping Seth Meyers and...James Corden). We'll find out next week. Until then:

Today show - Sept 15 (7-9 a.m.)

BUILD Series - Sept 15 (12-12:30 p.m.)

Rachel Ray - TBA

In the show’s first week back in original episodes, Ray will host many celebrity guests, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Julianne Moore...

One more cool photo from the CK show: Lupita Nyong'o, Mahershala Ali, and JakeGyllenhaal front row at the @CalvinKlein 205W39NYC #NYFW

Outside the 29Rooms exhibition

Inside the room he created: Jake Gyllenhaal is here and we literally cannot

Explaining the room

This tweet made me snort my tea: I'm so looking forward to rubbing my entire body all over the interactive art installation Jake Gyllenhaal created for 29rooms this weekend

Joking aside, his room is, well, artsy but thought-provoking and visually eerie with a David Lynch vibe (maybe I'm still recovering after Twin Peaks finale). But people are having a great time literally shredding their frustations.

Of note that Refinery29 is also behind Courtney Hoffman's shortfilm with Laura Dern that will be developed into a feature film (same woman director, same lead actress) produced by Jake. He's becoming a fixture in the New York indie/theater/art/design/fashion world.

Scott said...

Wonder how much Jake was made to attend the Klein show? Front seats are usually for paid celebrities to attend but I can't see Jake doing that but it's nice to see come out of his private shell a bit. Now if only Maggie can get him on Instagram.

Anonymous said...

Jake is raising his profile to help promote his movie. We will see him out and about more often. But he has gone to Fashion Week events before. You're right, front row seats are expensive, but I doubt he has to pay for front row seats. He's probably an invited guest.

Hardly time to keep up as I'm hoping to move house in a couple of weeks, so things are very hectic here. But I will keep reading! xxx

one of jake's publicists is behind him in a photo. i'm sure the pr company that represents him got the tickets, i doubt he has to pay for that sort of stuff. celebrities get free tickets to things all the time.

"It wouldn't surprise me if he took the subway all the way to CK's show in Manhattan, while all other guests arrived in limousines."

events like this celebs typically use a car service, not limos. jake has been known to use them to attend events in nyc. he takes the subway when he's not working and uses a car service for events or to go home after a broadway show.

^ It's much simpler. As we know since the new horrors, old dreams appearance, Jake is friends with designer Raf Simmons, who is the creative director for Calvin Klein. Last night's show had his signature: Expectations were high heading into the second Calvin Klein runway collection with Raf Simons as chief creative officer.
Jake didn't go to promote Stronger, as he declined all interviews. Like Lupita, Brooke or Mahershala, he was there to support Simons.
They were his guests: On Thursday evening in New York, Raf Simons used his superpowers to assemble fashion’s most diverse front row for his second Calvin Klein entitled, Sophomore.

He might also appear in a CK campaign (though I doubt it): Gyllenhaal and Nyong’o were decidedly less chatty. The “Stronger” actor deflected via a publicist, amidst rumors he is to appear in an upcoming campaign for Calvin Klein. Nyong’o simply wasn’t in the mood to converse.

Esquire US appreciated Jake's simple, understated appearance: Such was the case with Jake Gyllenhaal last night at Raf Simons' second show for Calvin Klein during New York Fashion Week. The actor was notable not for his attention-grabbing gear, but for a gray crewneck sweatshirt that felt completely fresh not in spite of but because of its simplicity.

But Esquire UK said it best: But then, appearing from the mist like a slouchy crusader against the narcissism and dumb hats, a wild Jake Gyllenhaal appears. A guy who evidently does not give a horsebit loafered, patent leathered f*ck about what he wears to New York Fashion Week. Praise be to you, Jake: our new Normcore King. :-) Obviously helped by his 0.01% genes, Jake bowled up to the opening of New York Fashion Week in an outfit that was totally... regular. And it was glorious. While we would never discourage being bold and experimenting with your clothes, there's something special about an A+++lister managing to stand out from the crowd by wearing as plain an outfit as possible.

Speaking of actual promotion for Stronger, one late night talkshow will be Jimmy Fallon - September 14. I know they're friends but still keeping hope for other better talkshows.

Anonymous said...

that was simpler?

Anonymous said...

Yep, he wasn't paid nor did he pay for tickets. Jake was invited by Raf Simmons. Like last time with New Horrors Old Dreams t-shirt.

Most of these interviews (print or video) go online closer to the movie release date. Some snipets, teasers, short interviews and Q&As are released during the festival though.

A live ET Canada intw. will be streamed at 5:15 PM. You can send questions.

Yes, this post is far too long. Sorry about that. New post up.

Quick evening recap: The movie is warm, funny and very moving. There were a lot of sniffles all around. It is a refreshingly honest portrayal, and Jake's performance is on another level. He's totally different here. He seems to channel Jeff's irreverent, sometimes lost, pained and optimistic soul. I can't wait to see it again.
