The buzz is getting Stronger

Stronger premiered to rave reviews for Jake Gyllenhaal, Tatiana Maslany and Miranda Richardson at the Toronto International Film Festival. The actors and director were all there, but Jeff Bauman, whose story is depicted in the funny, poignant movie, was the star of the evening.

Standing ovation for #StrongerMovie. Heartbreaking performances by Jake Gyllenhaal & @tatianamaslany.

Variety:
Sometimes movies impress you with their formal daring, their transgressiveness, their experimental boldness. Sometimes movies win you over with visual spectacle, novelty, unpredictability. And sometimes movies don’t necessarily have any of those qualities, they just flat-out work. David Gordon Green’s “Stronger,” a familiar yet undeniably moving film about Jeff Bauman, the everyman Bostonian who lost both his legs in the 2013 Marathon bombing, is a movie that just works. ...

The director certainly gets plenty of help from a superb lead performance by Jake Gyllenhaal, whose recent work has been of such a uniformly high caliber that it’s almost easy to overlook, and who tackles this role with every ounce of his usual commitment.

The Guardian:

It’s a refreshingly unconventional style that also allows Gyllenhaal the opportunity to truly impress. Another actor could have struggled with such naked camera work, the mechanics of their work seeming, well, mechanical, but Gyllenhaal is effortlessly good here. It’s an awards-worthy performance for a star who so often gets miscast and he sells both the good and the bad within Bauman. It’s pleasing, in a field full of overly deferential biopics, to see a fact-based drama based on a book written by the subject, that still contains nuance. Bauman is not a saint: he’s often selfish and immature, and by keeping these flaws in the movie, we become that much more involved in his story.

IndieWire:

Jake Gyllenhaal Is Riveting in David Gordon Green’s Boston Marathon Bombing Biopic
At some point in the last dozen or so years, Gyllenhaal became the finest working actor of his age — full stop — and “Stronger” finds him working in yet another gear, one that finds the shades in both Bauman as a public figure and the greater implications of what it means to elevate someone to such a status.

“Stronger” is not a film about Jeff coming to terms with his new body or learning how to walk again, but instead dealing with great personal pain while also struggling with the demands of a notoriety he never asked for. It’s a film about heroes and what we require from them, and why that often leads to wounds that may never heal. For Gyllenhaal, that amounts to a riveting and raw performance that never hits a false note. “Stronger” is a respectful and worthy tribute to Bauman, but it’s also an honest depiction of a devastating event and its ever-evolving after-effects.

I'll add more photos, videos and reviews later.

Quick evening recap: The movie is warm, funny and very moving. There were a lot of sniffles all around. It is a refreshingly honest portrayal, and Jake's performance is on another level. He's totally different here. He seems to channel Jeff's irreverent, sometimes lost, pained and optimistic soul. I can't wait to see it again.

Please feel free to ask any questions. I'll try to avoid spoilers or warn if there are. And I'll admire impressions.

From browsing through Twitter and fb I also found some slightly negative critique (one gave a C+ and mainly spoke about David Gordon Green not really delivering his best work) but most of what I have read so far was positive.

This made me smile (@amxndasantino on twitter):

Morning all, just told Jake Gyllenhaal that I think he deserves an Oscar and he started laughing.

Wasn't taking photos bc he almost got mauled yesterday from other fans that he had to run to his hotel.

Ok the last bit wasn´t that great....

'Stronger': A complicated movie about the reality of heralding survivors as "heroes." Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany are A++. #TIFF17

The best part of all of this is the brotherly bond between Jake and Jeff, it's so real. Where can I get a Jake Face of my own?

I'm so, so glad you enjoyed it, UV! And thanks for the new post! I love the Jake + Jeff pics, and I want a Jake Face as well, lol!

I have a million questions - and yet, I can't seem to think of a single one ;)

I'm just glad Jake's performance seems to be respectful and honest and great.

Diana said...

What is most important to me is to hear that Jeff thinks the movie actually really nailed it and really shows what it was actually like during the time that is portrayed.

I think that´s the risk you take when you do a biopic, some might find it not heroic or outstanding enough but these movies are no ordinary movies. I feel they are really good the closer to the truth they are and that truth might not be the kind of ENTERTAINMENT everyone is looking for.

Stronger is not meant to entertain me in a way like the Marvel movies are for example, or any fictional story put on screen. At least not for me.

I think you're right Monica. I think having Jeff there is making a difference as well. I'm glad that he's able to be there experiencing this all with the cast. I hope he can do more events with Jake.

In somewhat Jake related news, the first reactions for "The Current War" are out and they are not good. Glad Jake backed out of that to do SITPWG. I think that choice was better for him both professionally and personally.

Speaking of SITPWG, where is that cast recording?!?!

Not sure if anyone here is being affected by Irma but if so, I hope you're all safe and prepared for the storm!

Diana said...

I was curious and googled Scott Menzel´s review. Out of all the ones I´ve read so far, I have to say that I like this one the best. This is one of the reasons why:

I applaud screenwriter John Pollono for adapting Bret Witter and Jeff Bauman’s story in a way that is very true to life. Jeff isn’t shown as this hero which everyone makes him out to be after surviving the attack. Instead, he is shown as flawed, lazy, and sometimes even a bit unlikeable.

I have found something I thought might be interesting or at least worth it to keep an eye on: a posting on broadway world from last saturday:

A movie version has been greenlit with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead, perhaps the delay of the release (of the cast recording album) has something to do with this, maybe it won't even be released as to not cannibalize sales, which is a shame for Annaleigh Ashford (who is not attached to the film at the moment).

When asked where he/she knows this from the response was: someone working in the industry, can´t get into detail.

Might be rubbish, but still.... it reminded me of my conversation with Phillip Boykin after the last show. I asked him whether there was a chance that SITPWG could be transferred to the West End and he said that this was an actual point of discussion. So back then I thought that Jake seemed to be interested in not ending it right there. I am also thinking of the movie version of Les Miserables (which I loved) and I can totally imagine Jake in the lead for SITPWG.

What do you think?

BlueJean said...

Have you seen 'Stronger' twice now, UV? Was it as powerful the second times as it was the first?

Diana: "A movie version has been greenlit with Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead..." You mean for SITPWG? That would be awesome!

Diana said...

Yes, sorry... I was talking about SITPWG. I was trying to find out whether there was any info about a release date. Still nothing.

Really happy to know Jake stayed around TIFF, to support Dan Gilroy. Loving the pics and the news, too. Helen Mirren, Idris Elba, Benedict Cumberbatch, Denzel, Dan Gilroy, etc. and after all his hard work, I'm enjoying the rumors about SITPWG! He did such a fantastic job, I'l love to see it get even more exposure...including a movie ! : )

I did get to see the movie again, BJ. It was almost better, because I could relax adjust watch it. They definitely did Boston and Jeff proud. As one reviewer noted, there's almost too much Bawston in it, but people's mileage will vary on that one.

I am in the minority who did not like Miranda Richardson as Jeff's mother Patty. Over the top for me, though with a couple of very affecting moments. Loved Lenny Clarke as Uncle Bob.

I loved Jeff's bros. They really all worked well together and it felt very real.

Tatiana was very good. Not to the level of some reviewers calling her the standout. That's Jake, through and through. There's a weird film twitter obsession with actresses over actors, and I think that's at play here with both TM and MR. But I don't want to undersell Mislay. She is tough and loving and vulnerable. I've never seen Orphan Black, so I was duly impressed.

I'll wax about Jake in another post, but honestly, he was so good at capturing Jeff's dopey charm and his carelessness, the strength and vulnerability. It's a cliche, but he was on another level.

I read this in one twitter reaction and I wonder if it will be true. they did such a good oboe not making it biopic sappy that some people might be disappointed. One reviewer said s/he cried more at the trailer. The movie doesn't live up to the trailer's inspirational sap level. But it succeeds as a film because it avoids that, if that makes any sense.

More later!

UltraViolet said...

To clarify the babble above: They did such a good job making the trailer biopic sappy that when the movie didn't go that way, some were and others may be disappointed.

Description from the person who saw Jake at dinner last night:

They were sitting around a large table of about 8. The other 6 people looked like Hollywood business folk. Jake was closest, about 2-3 feet from me. He had longer hair than he normally wears and was very talkative and animated. The entire group seemed happy and drinking during most of our meal. Right before Jake left the table he told a joke using a loud Italian accent and the whole table laughed. He gave Benedict a hug goodbye and left the table. The entire restaurant was filled with other celebrities. We spotted a few others on our way in and out of the place. Many of them were probably staying in the upscale hotel that houses this restaurant.

Have you seen any other movies, UV? I´m especially interested in Darkest Hour with Gary Oldman. I haven´t read many reviews yet, but the ones I´ve read were good. Gary is one of the actors, alongside Denzel Washington and Benedict Cumberbatch, I like to keep a close eye on. Besides - some of them are said to be serious Oscar contenders and it´s not a bad thing to keep an eye on them.... ;)

The photos of Jake at Cantor Fitzgerald's Charity Day are gorgeous, especially the ones of him sitting at a table laughing. It´s great to see him laugh more often!

I love that Jeff and Jake wind each other up every now and then during interviews - I hope to see more of that wonderful chemistry between them. It´s all new for Jeff and it´s nice to see how Jake interacts with Jeff when they´re together. He really acts like a big, protective, immensly proud brother! Or maybe I just want to see it that way! Anyway, more and more interviews are popping up on youtube and various newssites:

I have seen a bunch of other movies. My favorite so far is Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig's incredible directorial debut. Loved it. I also loved a movie called "what Will People Say," about a Pakistani teenager living in Norway. It's a brutal tale about cultural assimilation and cultural violence against women. It's also from a female director, Iram Haq, and it is autobiographical. It's a harrowing tale but well worth watching. Both movies have beautiful lead performances.

I'll do a list later - they start to run together!

Love that interview, Diana. I did add it to the bottom of the post - people should check there if they haven't done their own youtube searches. Lots of stuff there. My favorite is Jeff telling an interviewer that Jake doesn't take any time for himself.

Forgot to say thanks for the SITPWG stuff yesterday. I'm dubious about turning it into a movie. It doesn't seem like an easy thing to do. And they should just release the soundtrack already! I would hate it if they aren't releasing it because of a movie, and I don't think that really makes sense. Any movie would be at least a year away, if not longer. Jake arrived at Toronto with a beard. I mean proper beard. No surprise there. It´s been there before.

On the red carpet in Toronto it was shortened. Noticed.

There are photos with Jake in a red/black shirt in Boston when he did interviews BEFORE the screening at Spaulding. Beard-status: Toronto

At the actual premiere at Spaulding Jake´s beard was again shortened. Oh, and Jeff had shaved. But we´re talking Jake here.

So that´s Jake´s beard-during-promotion-update. It´s nice to be able to tell where photos have been taken, you can tell by - guess what - the length of his beard.

Very moving and inspiring to see Marathon hero Jeff Bauman's story, Stronger, on the screen at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital where he learned to walk again. Amazing job by the actors and directors to capture that terrible time and the inspiring stories surrounding it. And amazing job by everyone at Spaulding to work with so many of the survivors just days after opening its doors!

WATCH JAKE GYLLENHAAL’S HILARIOUS INTERVIEW WITH THE BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING SURVIVOR HE PLAYS IN ‘STRONGER’:

Well, this is a fun and unconventional way to promote a movie. Over on his Facebook page, Jake Gyllenhaal just posted a video of himself with Jeff Bauman, the man he plays in the new biopic Stronger. Bauman was injured in the Boston Marathon bombings; the film chronicles his inspiring journey in that horrific event’s aftermath.

It’s heavy stuff, so this is a nice change of pace. Instead of Gyllenhaal and Bauman very solemnly talking about the terrible things Bauman has endured, they went a very different route. I don’t want to spoil it, watch for yourself:

In my experience (my in-laws are from that area), no one on the planet is better at ball-busting than a New Englander. And Bauman is one of the best of the best. “You ever thought about doing a good movie?” His delivery is amazing, so dry and deadpan. I also like how he says “The Depahhted” with the thick Boston accent.

These two should review all of Jake Gyllenhaal’s movies together. I would watch this as a regular online series.

Looks like Ryan isn't threatened by Jeff ;)

Ryan Reynolds shared Jake Gyllenhaal's video.
I love #StrongerMovie!!! The most moving, beautiful, charming film I've seen all year.

Jeff Bauman busting Jake's balls in the video below is the second best thing I've seen all year.

Funny stuff -- Jeff Bauman interviews Jake Gyllenhaal, who portrays him in @StrongerTheFilm https://www.facebook.com/JakeGyllenhaal/videos/10154178810577465/ …

From an interview with David Gordon Green:

In the past couple years, Jake has become this actor who’s really conscious of the projects he takes while also delivering some astounding performances. What was it like having someone like that as a partner?

Yeah, he doesn’t stop. Just as an example, it’s not a big budget film. We have limited time, limited money. I’d be hearing from producers we need to finish up the scene, wrap up the day or whatever. And then, we’d be shooting a scene and I’d say, “Okay, we got it.” And then, he’d walk up to me like, “Did we get it? Are you satisfied? Or are you just saying that because everybody’s looking at the clock?” I’m like, “Well, I’m just saying it ’cause we could do … We’re fine. We can find it in the editing room.” He’d be like, “Well, then we’re not done. Let’s go get it.” And so, it was nice to have someone that really had the communicating, he’s a producer as well on the film, and have that kind of communication and confidence with the financiers and the powers that be to help a movie like this actually exist. And as a creative collaborator that won’t stop because he’s in front of the camera and he wants it to be done as best as we know it can be done, and then, we can move on.

The video Jake posted made me laugh so much! Jeff is great, he reminds me of some of my british friends, they´re just as dry and deadpan. I love that and I miss it a lot around here.

So - the guy who has the ineffable honor to call himself my boyfriend knows that I am planning to go and see Jake on sunday.

Now that sounds exciting.... lol.

I just have to decide where to go to - five of the venues (cities) are 15 minutes more or less to drive from my hometown. I want to book my ticket tomorrow in case everything works out. That´s going to be an insane sunday. Driving there in the morning, coming back home at night to get up at 5 a.m. the next morning for work.

Oh the things you do.....

Jake Gyllenhall is a gem of an actor. Plays emotional men w such depth and respect #nocturnalanimals #brokebackmountain #stronger #film

Actual NBC News segment with some nice shots. they edited the 10-minute segment above into a nice story.

Anon, 5:07, I think it's interesting that Jake allowed a TS question. Proves, IMO, that his producer side (let's get views) overruled his private side (I don't want to talk about it). Vulture focused on the Nocturnal Animals part. I don't think it's a big deal.

Diane, do you have to drive far away or just 15 minutes? Either way, it will be worth it :)

>So now that it´s been a few days since you´ve seen the movie for the first time and it could really sink in - what does it feel like now, esp. when you compare it to other projects of Jake?<

I don't think I can say yet. Looking forward to seeing it again. It's an emotional topic, being from Boston. I think they do great service to Jeff and his story. Jake's performance is riveting: raw, funny, vulnerable, powerful. We haven't seen him play this guy before. It's hard to imagine anyone else playing this part and nailing it. Can't wait for other folks to see so we can discuss.

review from REEL BRIEF (reelbrief.com)

The film’s greatest attribute is that it places each of us in Bauman’s hospital room. And in his wheelchair. We wonder, as Gyllenhaal does, how we’d struggle to find our old life and chase new relationships with relatives and loved ones… Brilliant acting shines bright in this true story, taking viewers much further than the “Boston Strong” mantra”.

So, this happened today. Jake Gyllenhaal was in town promoting his upcoming movie Stronger, which opens this Friday @angelikafilmtx ! Such a powerful film. Bring lots of tissue.

STRONGER got to me. Unsurprisingly phenomenal performances by Gyllenhaal, Maslany, and Richardson. Sniffles and tears all around the room.

Just watched @StrongerTheFilm. Such an inspiring story @Jeffmbauman. Can we please give my man his damn Oscar already?!?!? #JakeGyllenhaal/Amazing. Simply amazing. Give #JakeGyllenhaal his Oscar already.

Just finished watching the premier of Stronger. Amazing! Listening to the Q&A was great and getting to meet Jeff Bauman was an honor. Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany did an amazing job on screen. Please go and watch the film. Some powerful parts that clearly represent amputee and caregiver feelings and challenges.

If Jake Gyllenhaal doesn't AT LEAST get nominated for his performance in #StrongerMovie, I will be pissed. One of his all-time best.

I really enjoyed Stronger. Jake awesome as always. Whole cast was great! I was expecting a Lifetime movie but it wasn't at all.

Saw @StrongerTheFilm 2night.Cried the whole time.Ppl didn't leave till the credits stopped rolling #JakeGyllenhaal perfection!#StrongerMovie

Went to the movies and got a bonus advanced screening of Jake Gyllenhaal's Stronger - Jeff Bauman's story of surviving the Boston Marathon bombing. Then Q&A! Go see the movie. Great story with all the feels. No emotion spared. Supremely well done.

Had the opportunity to see this film before its' release the weekend. It feels real and raw and it doesn't take Hollywood's glamourized style on inspirational stories, opting to show the real, accurate, and occasionally difficult to watch struggle of a man who lost his legs in the Boston Bombing back in 2013. It deals with finding hope and victory in tragedy, much like Dunkirk earlier this year. Jake Gyllenhaal continues to impress.

He was very nice! Was making fun of photographers yelling at him at events and I said I was guilty of that too and laughed (from woman who worked one of the DC events)

Saw screening of @StrongerTheFilm @RegalMovies highly recommend. Very inspiring. Jake Gyllenhaal great portrayal #baumanstrong

High praise for Jake's performance from Jeffrey Wells ("Hollywood Elsewhere): Is this Gyllenhaal’s most award-worthy performance ever? That’s a tough call for a guy who’s slammed it out of the park four or five times over the last dozen years (Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac, Nightcrawler, Demolition, Nocturnal Animals) but I honestly think it might be.

Augmented by some first-rate CG that totally convinces you that his legs are truly absent, Gyllenhaal’s Bauman is certainly more intense and blistering than Gary Oldman‘s Winston Churchill, I can tell you that. And I really admire that he never seems to be trying to charm the audience into liking him. That’s partly an aspect of John Pollono‘s script, which is based on “Stronger,” a personal recollection book by Bauman and Bret Witter, but it also comes from Gyllenhaal’s bravery.

You should play Jeff in the Wahlberg movie!

Nice EW interview:

And you have some good things coming up as well.
I do. I just worked with Jacques Audiard [on the upcoming The Sisters Brothers]. That was incredible! Extraordinary. He’s my favorite filmmaker in the world — I never thought I’d work with him and then I got that call. I was like, uh I don’t need to read it. I’ll do it. And he turned out to be everything I expected and more.

In regards to the marketing, Jeff Sneider tweeted a few weeks ago that he had been hearing the only good thing about Stronger, was Jake's performance. I wonder if they weren't expecting such strong reviews and now they're trying to scramble to get the word out about the film. There seems to be an increase of promotion over the past few days. I've noticed the TV ads airing more frequently. Hopefully if this weekend isn't good at the box office, the ones who do see it will talk about it so that more will go next weekend. I'm trying to get everyone I know to go this weekend, Lol

Ann said...

Oh and thanks UV as always for all the updates. I had missed a few of the interviews you posted :)

Jake was on Hardball with Chris Matthews tonight. Hope they post video as I missed it.

He is also on the cover, big story is Prince William, of People this week.

I have seen a lot more ads on tv. Hope that and the very great reviews will help box office.

I expect Stronger to do well at the box office, over all, but it won't win the box office this weekend. Too few screens. I expect "It " to continue to do well. There's a Lego Ninjas movie and there's Kingsman: Golden Circle. Next week they will add more screens for Stronger, and it will do much better.

Tickets all sold out within 5 minutes...but I managed to get two! Couldn't get them together, so one is at the back in the middle and the other in the second row but at the end against the wall. Don't know which is better.

I'm so excited!

I'm surprised that Judi Dench prefers Jake over Hugh Grant. :-)

The topic of "Stronger" might be a tough sell at the box office. Hopefully the reviews will help (certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and currently a score of 76 on Metacritic).

Very happy for you, Sal!

Thanks for all the great updates UV! Loved the FB live interview with Sheryl Sandberg. I think Jake broke a few hearts with that last answer for sure!

Real Sal said...

Thanks, Bobbyanna! I'm in a really good mood right now lol. Bit annoyed with myself though booking the tickets - I lost a prime spot by clicking on the wrong thing...but it's not the end of the world. Now I just need to find a friend that is able to go with me!

Will Jake also be there, Sal? Do you know?

Stronger is not playing in a theater near me☹️

bobbyanna said...

Aww, Mary that's too bad. My apartment complex is across the street from a movie theatre and it's not playing there either: ( . I had to search Fandango to find some place not too far, but hopefully we will all be in better shape next week when they open wider.

Sal if I could I'd be happy to join you... for sure we'll be there in spirit! : )

Yes! Say hi to Jake from us, Sal! :) And have fun!

Oh I was hoping you could all watch the movie right away, that´s a shame! Fingers crossed for next week!

I´ve just downloaded SITPWG - I don´t have the time to listen to it today, only heard some snippets. I will do that tomorrow - and on sunday, on my way to Maastricht!

I just had to laugh so much - I was reading an interview with Jake and Jeff (Washington Post) and there were some ads on the right side - including a big one from 443 Greenwich street. I almost doubled over!

Anyone want to share a condo with me? HA!

Scott said...

Did you all get your streaming for Sunday yet?

I just saw Stronger. The movie, IMO is a masterpiece. Flawless. Jake literally became Jeff Bauman. It was just beautiful from start to finish. Some scenes were really hard to watch but this was one of the most authentically rendered true stories I've ever seen. It deserves every single bit of praise it's getting especially Jake, and Tatiana, and Miranda, and Uncle Joe and just everyone. The actors who played his brothers, the man who rescued him, all of it.

Ann said...

Agree with everything you said bobbyanna.

Am I the only dork who got choked up a little with pride seeing the Nine Stories logo at the beginning of the film? LOL

Saw Stronger last night. As such a fan I often find it hard to fully ever watch a Jake movie without an unbiased option on 1st viewing as Im often to wrapped up in excitement and just the fact that its Jake up on screen, ha. I usually have to watch them twice to fully see the movie as a whole. However not this time. He completely disappeared for me into this role. I agree with UV "he's never played this guy before"I was so convinced with everything he was doing. The close up shots of him were incredible such a haunted lost look in his eyes. What directly follows the argument in the car was so devastatingly beautifully done. Im glad those images were saved for that moment had such and emotional impact. thought the whole cast was good, Maslany was great and even Richardson was not to over the top for me I quite liked her. Im happy for Jeff this is the movie he got. This could have easily been such a cliche in other people's hands. The only tiMe i felt the movie was off was the scene after the 1st pitch with Larry. That moment felt slightly like it could have been from a more conventional film. Definitely a small problem for me didn't ruin any of what preceded and followed it. This is one of his best films in awhile for me maybe my fav performance. The theater I went to was pretty full and definitely heard alot of sniffles.Hope lots of people see this. I will for sure see it again while its still in theaters -KD

Diana, I think you'll be seeing Stronger today. Can't wait for your reaction. Mary, I'm sorry it's not playing near you. I think it will be in more theaters next weekend.

The box office wasn't great on Friday but I'm hoping some good word of mouth kicked in. I'm trying to be zen about this and just be happy both Jake and the movie are being praised.

Ann, I loved seeing the Nine Stories logo, too!

Anon, that Fenway scene draws different reactions. I know what they were going for, but wasn't sure it worked. But when I saw it again last night, it really got to me. Sadly, Miranda Richardson hasn't grown on me. I've seen Jeff's real mother now and I don't think MR is necessarily over the top. But her performance is too showy for my taste. It doesn't ruin the movie but does take away a bit for me.

Bobbyanna, I love the guys who play Jeff's bros. They were my favorite part of the film!

There's a lot to talk about with this movie. The critical reaction is so much better than it seemed it would be. I wonder if Lionsgate should have held it for later in the season.

Scott, I did download Sunday and have been listening to it a lot. I love it. It lacks the presence of the bootleg for me - that live spark. But the orchestrations and the clarity and beauty of the score shine through. So happy it's out.

FYI: I'm going to try to do a new post tomorrow so we can continue the discussion as more people see the movie. But I'm about to dump a whole more links on you. I found a bunch I thought I'd posted but didn't. And many many new ones. So apologies in advance but there's some great stuff in there.

It was such an honor to meet Jake Gyllenhaal and Jeff Bauman and view their new film. I was so impressed by Jake's eagerness to understand and depict this painful, yet inspiring story so accurately and by Jeff's willingness to share it. I really encourage you to see the movie!

A powerful telling of an inspiring true story that emotionally hits you in the most genuinely rewarding way, this movie is an excellently acted, fantastically directed, thoughtfully written and extremely impactful work of moving filmmaking which wonderfully transcends all of the unwanted clichés you would expect from a story like this to deliver something that is raw, real and beautifully truthful. One of the very best things that the movie has going for it is the absolutely excellent central performance given by Jake Gyllenhaal which is so stunningly strong throughout, as he brilliantly infuses his role with such terrifically rich dramatic subtlety that wholly engrosses you into every moment of sadness, happiness, pain and horror he goes through in a way that is beyond movingly award worthy.

First things first: I LOVE the movie! It will take me a little while to sort out all the thoughts and feels about it, though, because I still feel like I´ve been taken apart and not put back together completely! Like Jake said at the last curtain call of SITPWG, my heart is so full it might just explode.

I will start responding to the posts above, that´ll help me a bit to sort myself out *lol*

I downloaded Sunday the day it came out and listened to it on my way to Maastricht. I´ve got a recording from the New York City Centre and of course there is a huge difference, not only in the quality of the recording itself but I believe I can also hear a difference in the performances. The cast recording is more - playfull, I´d say. The flow is smoother and the performances with more confidence, the way it can of course be expected after having done the show for 10 weeks. I could already hear and see a difference when I was at the Hudson for the first preview and then the last matinée and last show. I know that some of the actors have already performed in this musical in other revivals, but with ever new show you have to adjust to a different group of people with their individual characters and you have to find a way to connect and work together. It doesn´t matter how long you´re rehearsing, the last step in making this connection is made when you´re on stage actually performing in front of an audience. I love both recordings.

Some of the tweets about Stronger/Jake make me laugh so hard, it´s just great. I really have to refrain myself not to spend too much time searching for tweets - I could do it all day! Well in fact I almost have a few times since TIFF!

I retweeted the Chris Stuckmann review, it is a good summary of what I think about the movie. And BJ - I also think that we get a LOT of promo with this movie - and there is no promo for Europe included yet! When I was doing research on Jake´s previous projects I never found as much footage/interviews like with this one, even on the more recent movies like Life or Demolition.

I think I am going to write more about Stronger when the new post is up. Just want to say that I´m glad I´ve got the office all to myself today because I´ve had a good cry this morning and I´m still on the edge and welling up all the time. The movie definitely took me back to a few moments of my life that I don´t really want to think about that much.

Stronger stays with you. I find myself thinking about Jeff, interestingly enough, wondering how he is doing, how he gets through his days, etc. Sometimes when I see him standing around for photos and doing all that walking I remember the line where he said it "felt like needles" and I know all this constant activity has to tire him. He is so generous to us. I have grown very fond of Jeff Bauman. I'm so glad Jake included Jeff in all the promotion so we get to know him as a real live person.

Anon at 7:10 I think it might have been shot at some point during/after he promoted Nocturnal Animals. As far as I know they´re collecting the filmed snippets for a while until they´ve got enough material.

"Sometimes when I see him standing around for photos and doing all that walking I remember the line where he said it "felt like needles" and I know all this constant activity has to tire him."

That's what I was thinking as well. I have problems with my legs myself, so I know how difficult it can be to keep up with people physically, especially at the end of the day, when you're tired. I guess most promoting is done, now the movie's out. But my hat's off to Jeff, in any case.

That´s what I was thinking right away when I realised that Jeff would be doing promo, too, and even more so when I saw all the footage from TIFF and everything that followed after that.

Stronger is going to be the second movie in my life that I will be watching at the cinema at least twice. It´s still on my mind, all the time and very intensely, and that doesn´t happen that often with a movie. Thinking about it I remember only three movies right away that got to me so much, the first was "The last unicorn", "Seven" starring Brad Pitt (I had nightmares for weeks after that) and Enemy.

I am wondering wether Jeff is going to be in Zurich and London, too. My gut feeling tells me he won´t but I haven´t checked.

I still couldn´t find the interviews Dino Lalli did, and POPCORN with Peter Travers. I was hoping they would be up on IHJ at some point, but weren´t when I checked last time. Ah well....

I'm curious what the complete marketing/release plan is for Stronger. Im sure there is a strategy here, but I have not seen any more ads on tv since last Friday and read an article that its expanding to somewhere around 650 screens(I think it was) this weekend.

Anonymous said...

They will expand to 800 screens Friday.

Anonymous said...

I was hoping they'd be more aggressive this week with marketing but it doesn't seem that way. I've seen less tv spots than before. There are plenty of talk shows Jake hasn't done yet that could help get the word out about the film.

BlueJean said...

Like Diana, I'm wondering what will happen with European promotion. Jeff's story isn't as well known here. I'm thinking / hoping 'Stronger' will nevertheless be a surprise hit here because of Jake's status as an actor. Don't think it will be huge, but Jake's name alone should draw attention. There's not a whole lot of buzz about it yet as far as I can tell. How well is it doing in the US?

Diana, I saw 'Enemy' twice at the cinema - and 'Demolition' three times. Yes, I'm nuts :)

Anonymous said...

He can't do more talkshows now because their schedules are filled with stars of upcoming movies (D.Hoffman, J.Roberts, Ford, Leto, Gisling) and chock full of TV stars plugging their new shows or Emmy awards. There's barely a window where he could go now.

I guess we're witnessing a case of a movie doing much better than the industry, including its own distributors, expected. Jake and Jeff did tons of interviews and as many screenings as possible (a new one is scheduled for 29 Sept. with Jake) but that was all the marketing staff had planned. Few TV adds, zero billboards and a handful of talkshows. Which is too little for a movie with a 95 score, the best score of all newly released films.

Mara Buxbaum also did a poor job in scheduling Jake's talkshows appearances: no Seth Meyer, Colbert, James Corden (what better venue to promote the movie and the cast album of his Broadway musical - talk about lost opportunities).

The movie delivered. The director delivered. The actors delivered big time, more than any other: they're the only ones universally praised.
Now it's up to Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, publicists and marketing staff to up their game. If they screw up it's on them. Let's hope they have a long run strategy.
