Watch out for Nocturnal Animals

From GQ UK: When Jake Gyllenhaal met Tom Ford

Jake Gyllenhaal is not just an Oscar-nominated actor with a legendary work ethic and a drop-dead smile. He is also a Jewish boy from LA, a Swedish nobleman, godson of Paul Newman, has studied Buddhism at Columbia with Robert Thurman, and is known for transforming himself physically and emotionally for his roles. Tom Ford is not just a fashion designer and film director, he is а 21st-century Renaissance man. After revolutionising fashion, he moved effortlessly into film with unprecedented success: his first film, A Single Man, was nominated for a raft of awards including the Best Actor Oscar nomination for lead Colin Firth. Now the two have teamed up for Mr Ford's sophomore feature, Nocturnal Animals, with Jake Gyllenhaal taking the dual role of Edward Sheffield, a writer, and Tony Hastings, the main character from Edward's book who suffers an unfortunate fate with his family while going on their summer holidays. Here, in an exclusive transatlantic telephone conversation, Mr Ford interviews Mr Gyllenhaal about the art of making movies, writing screenplays and being vulnerable.

Finally, the trailer!

And the teaser for the teaser:

And since Jake didn't get to go to TIFF, let's revisit Venice, in black and white:

I feel blessed to have seen as well Ann.
I don't know if they film special concerts/readings like they do for plays and musicals and this was for a benefit

The Library for Performing Arts has the original cast on film with Mandy Patinkin and Berendette Peter on tape.

Chica, Ann, UV, so, so glad you all got to see it! My twitter feed has quite a few comments from people who were brought to tears.

Here's another audio clip from yesterday's matinee of Jake doing Finishing the Hat. Hope this guy posts more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgKcVdzWGFE

I've never seen SITPWG live on stage but just by watching and listening to various recordings, I felt its power. Sondheim's music, while intellectually challenging, elicits strong emotions, it simply makes you cry.
I'm so happy for you, UV, Ann, Chica. As Brantley put it, you now have the "misty-eyed bragging rights" :-)

As for Jake, his is an absolute success, and deservedly so. Two more raves. One from The Guardian:

Gyllenhaal sings Sondheim superbly

5 / 5 stars

Hats off to Jake Gyllenhaal, who leads a triumphant performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer-winning musical about the very process of art-making

Look, Jake Gyllenhaal has made a hat. Where there occasionally has been a hat. His is a very fine hat. He ought to make more of them.

This production, which ran for three days and four performances, was a benefit for City Center, which meant that very few people had a chance to spend Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday at the theater with George. Which is a shame. Unlike the previous New York revival, a 2008 London import, this production is almost overwhelming in its emotional lucidity and startling warmth.

(...) Certainly, Sondheim’s cleverness can feel coldly brittle in the wrong hands. But thanks to the work of Gyllenhaal, Ashford, and the tremendous supporting cast the effect is immediate and elating. When the instruments and voices finally swell together into the sheer rapture of Sunday, all the theater, all the blustery city, seems a park on a sun-dappled day.

The other rave from Matthew Murray, chief theatre critic for Talkin Broadway. I'll post the entire part about Jake and hope UV won't mind because it's just beautiful.

Though Gyllenhaal remains best known as a screen star (Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler, and more), he's been making major inroads onto the New York stage in recent seasons. He was the surprise highlight of the Off-Broadway production of If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet in 2012, and was stunningly good in two unaccountably different roles last year: as an earthbound lover in the scientifically chaotic romantic tearjerker Constellations on Broadway, and as the lovable horticulturist Seymour Krelborn in last year's Encores! Off-Center concert of Little Shop of Horrors.

None of these characters exactly suggests that Gyllenhaal would be able to marshal the necessary resources (emotional and vocal) to succeed at, let alone merely fill, Sondheim and Lapine's Georges, who were originated by the gifted and idiosyncratic Mandy Patinkin and are thus anything but easy. Given the legendarily short rehearsal times of these mountings, he'd be further impeded. And up against Annaleigh Ashford, the full-on theatre creature cast as the linked muses in the Georges' lives, wouldn't Gyllenhaal's relative lack of relevant experience be more noticeable than ever? Many theatre lovers I know (and, uh, I in occasional moments) feared as much.

As it turns out, Gyllenhaal is much better than could be hoped for. He wields a shockingly well-trained and rangy singing voice that sounds as if it's matured three or four years in the 16 months since Little Shop. He effortlessly navigates the high notes and the difficult pointillist passages during which Seurat is crafting his masterpiece, and fills the sustained sections (some of them quite lengthy) with a build and richness that are often lacking in many more established musical theatre talents. Beyond that, though, is his command of the Georges, which is thorough and convincing, from the inside out.

Seurat is a fully brusque man on the exterior, but he's also just marginally in touch with the boy underneath who craves approval, whether from his colleagues or women. Gyllenhaal shows the battle between these urges, resulting in a man who is, to quote a lyric, "bizarre, fixed," but not "cold." And because he leaves this conflict unresolved at the first act curtain, there's even more vivid room than usual for the later George to take up arms himself at the urging of his progenitor's creations and fuse all parts of his personality into a new determination to do what's right for him and his craft. Many actors in the role excel at one George or the other, but Gyllenhaal's bridge between the two is the clearest and most complete I've seen. Gyllenhaal is driven (his "Finishing the Hat" is laser-focused), funny (he doesn't overdo the dog badinage in "The Day Off"), and broken ("Lesson #8"), and never in merely the ways you expect.

Loved that Guardian review!

Some tweets/posts:

I wish that I was articulate enough to write something worthy of City Center's production of "Sunday in the Park with George". I believe this is one of Sondheim's most brilliant shows from beginning to end and when put in the hands of a cast as remarkable as this...true theater magic. Jake Gyllenhaal is perfection as George, proving that his singing is every bit as impressive as his acting and Annaleigh Ashford gave us the most lovable and relatable Dot/Marie that I've ever seen. I am still teary-eyed over "Children and Art", so much so that it feels as if it's the first time I've ever heard it! The last chords and magnificent orchestration of "Sunday" are still ringing in my ears. I feel very fortunate to have had this experience and to have shared it with such good company. Theater history made once again.

I was reminded last night of the power of live performance. It can be transcendent but only experienced in that very moment. You have to be fully present because soon it will just be a memory. When it all comes together perfectly, every single person in the theatre is aware of it (well except that awful girl who kept checking her very bright phone and who deserves an unhappy life)

Great performance of Sunday in the Park with George yesterday. It was a fund raiser for City Center and they assembled quite a cast. Jake Gyllenhaal starred. Who knew he could sing so well..

Who knew? He's really, really good. (audio with pictures)

Gorgeous "Sunday in the Park with George" @NYCityCenter! Shocked by Jake Gyllenhaal's voice! Great singing, great show. #SundayNYCC

remember in high school when I watched october sky and absolutely hated jake gyllenhaal? I just heard him sing & hot damn

Back in 1984, when SUNDAY was being introduced at Playwrights, I moved heaven and earth to get in to one of the performances. I had a tiny relationship with Steve (I was a charter member of the NYC Gay Men's Chorus, and he had not only worked with us twice, a master class in itself, but had given us leave to do all and any of his work at no charge), and wrote to him, begging for a ticket. He put me on a waiting list, but it didn't happen (and as we all now know, there was only one act at Playwrights), but PH gave its members the first preview at the Booth for free. The show was uneven ("Children and Art" had yet to be added), but when Mandy sang "Finishing the Hat," I think I died. Hearing it again this week, so masterfully sung by Jake, was yet another revelation. The whole production was amazing; I cried without stop during the final scene on the island.
I think we can agree that if Jake were willing to do the show, it could open on Broadway very quickly, and actually pay back its investors. And now that BURN THIS has been postponed (don't much like the play anyway), perhaps this could happen...

FilmNation will launch foreign sales next week on the June Pictures title, based on the Richard Ford novel, at the American Film Market. WME is handling domestic sales.

Thanks, Hagen. Wildlife ramped up very quickly!

Jake will also be on Jimmy Kimmel next week, the same day he's on Ellen (Tuesday, 11/1).

Not sure if this has been posted, but there is a BAFTA screening this weekend and Jake is scheduled to be there. And the BAFTA ceremony with Ang Lee is tonight.

Empire podcast with Jake.

One thing I remembered from SITPWG: In the second act, Marie (AA) says she was born in Paris, France, 98 years ago, and they flash an old-timey photo of a young girl. Then Jake, as George, says he was born in Paramus, NJ, 32 years ago. And they put up a real photo of Jake as a young boy, wearing a baseball uniform with a P on the hat. And he's in adorable/dorky glasses. It's not a photo I remember seeing before. Very cute moment.

Some more tweets/posts. Love this first tweet - not related to the show but it made me LOL:

Good news. Wife met #JakeGyllenhaal last night, her celeb freebies, and no divorce papers yet. @JakeG_Online @GyllenhaalicsFF he's kind

I was one of the fortunate in the audience for this performance on Monday. I agree with every word of this review. Annaleigh Ashford and Jake Gyllenhaal were sooooooo gooooooood! I've seen three or four incarnations of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, but this was the first to ever hit me where I live and bring me to tears. Still thinking about it, days later.

Jesus. As though the intensity of my crush needed to be escalated. . .

Damn! Jake Gyllenhaal can sing Sondheim like nobody's business. Was not expecting the goosebumps I got from this.

But Jake. Jake. What a talent. Impeccable pitch. Virtuoso technique. The most natural acting.
And in the final moments of the show, the finest duet singing, the most sensitive musicality that I have ever heard ever.

So Jake Gyllenhaal is the best young American actor working. Just a reminder.

City Center has outdone themselves with their production of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. A cast that was simply outstanding in every aspect. And Annaleigh Ashford as Dot/Marie and Jake Gyllenhaal as George/George were exemplary in their respective roles. The music was thrilling to hear with this cast. Oh, what a joy to have this revival - moving to Broadway??!

Seeing Jake- aka my hero- on stage was probably the highlight of my life. He can honestly do no wrong and is the most talented- and underrated- actor I can think of. PS this show is so fucking beautiful

I got to see Jake Gyllenhaal in a musical and I can honestly say it was the highlight of my life. He is such a talented actor and his presence on stage is something I probably won't experience again

it's transCENDENT one of the best productions i've ever seen and it's not even fully realized (yet)!!!!

Just bawling after "Sunday" at intermission. One of my favorite songs of all time And Jake's "Finishing the Hat". I died.

We are so lucky to have art. And Jake Gyllenhaal. And Sondheim.

I hate to break it to anon 7:49 but that is a Tom Ford shirt. Just like the other shirt we made fun of is specifically a
Tom Ford Exploded Plaid Flannel Sport Shirt :p They’re all wearing Tom Ford clothes for NA promotion.

But isn’t it funny that last week an anon kept blaming Jake for not promoting NA and now that Jake is promoting NA, an anon complains about...the outfit? Tonight Jake will wear a suit, at Jimmy Kimmel he will wear a suit or a jacket while promoting NA. I wonder what the complaint will be then? We can make it a drinking game.

Anyway, Jake and Amy have a lot of fun together. When paired, they’re always smiling or laughing. Where is that adorable gif from Venice press conference? Maybe someday they’ll make a full movie together as partners. If it’s Ezekiel Moss, the better.

UltraViolet said...

No need for a catalog of complaints, anon. Please leave other posters out of your posts. Tom Ford or not, the buttoned-all-the-way-up shirt annoys many.

Great photos of Amy and Jake. They do look good together and look like they are having fun together.

Follow-up from Alicia Malone:

Alicia Malone: (cont) It's a 1-sided, long-term relationship Jake plays no part in
Amy: Funny, that's what it's like to be in a relationship WITH Jake!

Seen pics today of Jake, Amy and Tom at an Academy screening of NA last night.
Honestly think having read numerous reviews and got opinion of friends who've seen it the Oscars showing love to this movie is pretty much nil as it's a divisive movie. Maybe bar Shannon and the score. And Amy's put her fruits in the Arrival basket anyway.

Anonymous said...

I don't think anyone was expecting Oscar any more. I think the best thing for Jake fans is to forget Oscar and just enjoy his rise in career, the man is on fire. Oscars start campaigning 12 months prior. There are already Oscar nomination predictions for next year and not a single film predicted has gotten a release date.

Oscars are more than performances, its a whole different animal that is becoming so predictable. But its nice to read even today that a lot of people are still upset that Jake got robbed.s

Monica said...

I'm also not thinking on Oscar, I think Jake will be one in the future, make sweeping all the awards. At the moment I want to enjoy this success.
Jake is living one of the best moments of his career. He has a career and filmography better than many who are winning Oscars. the recognition will come.
