The ascent begins

Updated with a photo from L'Uomo Vogue:

Friday was Everest press junket day in L.A. We got our usual happy/sad/pensive yearbook photos of Jake at the press conference, plus some hilarious videos.

Jake and Jason Clarke get deep. And deeply silly:

Link to another press conference.

Jake with Belgian reporter Kristien Morato.

Jake is part of MSNBC/Global Citizen Festival, choosing veterans as his cause to support.

Jake looking good in La Repubblica.

And in some Outside outtakes from this video:

I could just eat him up especially in the last picture. Jake your hair looks good without all the gel, the tousle look is great on him.

The videos aren'y working for me. There's that little face saying not available, but I agree, he looks delicious. : )

LOL UV, that cracked me up! Nice to see Jake's eased up on the hair gel for Everest promo.

Monica said...

Much better without gel.

UltraViolet said...

Someone else came up with the yearbook thing, but he really does do the whole range of emotions, usually. LOL.

Bobbyanna, the videos work for me. I had accidentally posted the same video twice. But that's fixed. Glad you got to see the press conference video and enjoyed that, also.

Monica and anon, I hope he is slowly lowering the gel content. But I fear Venice will see a resurgelce.

Apparently Jeff Wells from 'Hollywood Elsehwhere' likes 'Everest': No reviews or social media postings on Baltasar Kormakur‘s Everest (Universal, 9.18) until the wee hours of September 2nd, but I can at least say that before last night I was convinced that Kormakur was more or less the new Renny Harlin. Kormakur’s Contraband and 2 Guns, a pair of negligible, jizz-whizz Mark Wahlberg actioners, were enough to persuade anyone of this hypothesis. I’m not saying anything about anything, but it’s a major knockout feeling and an eye-opener when a guy you’ve more or less written off suddenly conveys that he has a lot more in his quiver.

About six hours ago I dropped by this morning’s Four Seasons press conference for Baltasar Kormakur‘s Everest (Universal, 9.25), which will open the Venice Film Festival next Wednesday (9.2). I can’t say anything until then but it was a good thing to attend. I can say this without tipping my hand: The major studios have been out of the business of making gripping thrillers that actually adhere to the laws of physics and other natural-world constraints. You know…gravity, adverse weather, getting tired, etc. Superhero, fantasy, comic-book, James Bond, Jason Bourne and Mission: Impossible movies have made a point of ignoring that stuff to death. It theoretically follows that it would seem like a huge shock to run into a film that actually respects the rules of nature and plausibility and takes your breath away all the same. Right? That would be a helluva thing if a movie did that. Theoretically, I mean.

bobbyanna said...

Thanks Hagen!Seems like Jeff Wells likes it a lot : )

UltraViolet said...

Wow - good to hear that Wells liked it. He is a picky guy. One of the commenters said that it was panned by a Norwegian paper. I guess we'll find out more soon.

I added a photo of Jake with a junket reporter who has posted about Jake previously.

Lots of people tweeting and instagramming posts about watching Southpaw online. Too bad they didn't see it in theaters, but they seem to be enjoying it.

Monica said...

^^I'm seeing the movie through gifs.

- (17) Southpaw Weinstein Co. $879,000 -25% 606 $1,450 $49,478,879 38

So UV here's hoping SP gets to $50 million this week? I know with only showing in 606 theatres it will be hard because it looks as if it may be dwindling down rapidly in theatres. But on a more positive, international audiences believe more in word of mouth than critics. It's almost at 1/2 the domestic total at over 73.6 million total.

I am still hoping Weinstein re-releases it closer to the end of the year? Usually by now the release date of a Jake movie to DVD has been release by now (knock wood that doesn't happen). It was unfair that SP lost so many theaters fast compared to the losers that have come out since its release.

UltraViolet said...

That's a good weekend result, so Southpaw will get to $50 million. And it's doing well in Australia:

US Boxing drama Southpaw has fought back in its second weekend at the box office to knock the fifth installment in the National Lampoon's Vacation film series out of the top spot.

The Antoine Fuqua director film, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy Hope and Rachel McAdams as his wife Maureen, took almost $1.3 million on the weekend on 193 screens.

Fingers crossed that Italy does well - it opens there this week, as well.

UltraViolet said...

Added another interview video, as well as an Outside magazine video and some screen caps.

Monica, when does SP open in Brazil so you can watch the real thing? :)

UltraViolet said...

Just added a still of the L'Uomo Vogue cinema issue cover. Here's a link to the English version of the article. IHJ has the other shots, as well.

Five clips from Everest.

Also, wow that Outside video is wide. I'll try to resize later.

bobbyanna said...

LOL! No problem, UV! I didn't mind the Outside video's size at all. God, he looks good.

BlueJean said...

Doesn't he look great in the Outside video? Wowie!

I still haven't got SP (September 10). 'Everest' will open September 17 - so I'm hoping to catch them both at once ;)

BlueJean said...

We were thinking the same thing, Bobbyanna! :)

Monica said...

when does SP open in Brazil

September 10, but looking at the schedule of movie theaters of my town, I saw only Everest, not Southpaw. Everest will open September 17.

bobbyanna said...

(((monica))) I hope you'll get a chance to see Southpaw somehow. That sucks that it's not nearby.

UV these Everest clips are incredible! I'm really getting excited about this movie. (especially since reading that Jake's role is more than just a cameo.) The buzz is really good, too. It looks breathtaking...pun intended. : )

I love those Vogue pictures, Jake looks soooooooooooo hot!

The Long Coat jacket wow, Jake would make a great late Russian spy in a James Bond movie if they ever decided to go old school like in the 60's.

UltraViolet said...

I like the long coat, but I think it's kind of a silly photo.

Jake will be on the second week of Colbert's new show:

Tuesday, Sept. 15 Actor Jake Gyllenhaal; musical performance by Run The Jewels with TV On The Radio (

I wish he'd done the old show, but this should be fun.

Gld to hear the clips are goos. I'm avoiding for now, lol.

And yeah, I guess I should have known you guys wouldn't complain about Jake in bigger video form :)

Is Jean-Marc Valée's DEMOLITION w/ Gyllenhaal a drama or dark comedy? Blurb makes it impossible to tell. (Looking for genuine help here!)

Damon Wise ‏@yo_damo 2m2 minutes ago
@jhoffman I asked Jake Gyllenhaal in Cannes. He said, “It's kinda hard to explain.” And I've been wondering about it ever since.

Jordan Hoffman ‏@jhoffman 1m1 minute ago
@yo_damo On that alone, I guess I'm game. You'll be at TIFF this year?

We'll find out soon, I guess!

I have to post this before I lose track of it again. I was going through some IHJ press stuff and saw this story on Jake. I loved this:

And that's how he found himself singing and acting onstage with Ellen Greene, Little Shop's original Audrey. "I love his heart," says Greene, 64. "The line where Audrey tells Seymour, 'I hope you have all good things in your future,' that was me saying that to Jake."

Aww!

Ann said...

Wow. That Ellen Greene quote is really lovely. That was such a special performance. I'm glad clips are available online for others to see and I feel so lucky to have seen it in person. Thanks for sharing that, UV :)

Jake looks amazing in this photoshoot and he had the best sir of any actor out there!
I've seen one of the promos for Everest playing on TV over the weekend. Its the one where they don't mention any of the actors in the movie!

They just seem to be pushing that it's being shown on IMAX.
What they do show you can't tell Jake from Josh, etc. They don't even mention Kiera Knightley when they do show her briefly.

Tweety

UltraViolet said...

Hi, Tweety! They took their time, but Universal is finally kicking the Everest promotion into high gear. It is funny how much they seek Jake in some of the promotion.

Jake is apparently in Venice:

just had lunch in venice sitting face 2 face w jake gyllenhaal nbd

No details.

UltraViolet said...

Wouldn't it be nice? Sunset in Venice. If you don't have Facebook: https://instagram.com/p/7GLz7DiLCo/

It saddens me that Jake is a vertical videographer. SMH.

Love Jake but to be honest the video made me sea sick, no joke.

Finally saw my first commercial ad for Everest😀

It's really odd that no trailer for Demolition has been released yet. Eddie Redmayne's Danish Girl trailer is out and everyone is already giving him the Oscar. Great timing with all the transgender headlines of late.

Monica said...

Demolition release date is for next year, so it's not so odd. I think the trailer will be online next week with Tiff.

UltraViolet said...

Me, too, Mary! Saw one tonight during the tennis.

The whole Demolition thing is so odd. I don't get the strategy at all. Maybe once I've seen the movie, it will make sense. If threes a strategy.

Everest U.S. premiere on 9/9. They say Jake will be there.

Anonymous said...

Fingers crossed for 'Everest' premiere in Venice tonight... I hope there will be great reactions!
And fingers crossed also for SP, yes, which opens here in Italy tomorrow... not so optimistic though, since almost all the 'cinematographic' attention is on movies at the Venice Festival, but who knows... how many tickets will I have to buy to support SP?

I guess, as Monica says, we will see a trailer next week, but I also agree with UV, everything about this movie is kind of strange. I'm getting nervous but at the same time I'm excited to see something new from it.

As for the Vogue photo shoot, I love the picture in which he is sitting down. Love the air, love the beard, love the clothes :D

"Demolition release date is for next year, so it's not so odd. I think the trailer will be online next week with Tiff."

Its strange when a film is making a TIFF debut this month. Not even a snippet, sorry but that is odd and strange.

UltraViolet said...

Early photos of Jake from the Everest press conference and a good review from Hollywood Reporter.

Tina, you'll have to do your part for Southpaw :) I'm sure it will be a chore.

Picture - we are all so greedy. So much Jake with Everest and SP, but I'm with you. Can't wait to see some Demo stuff.

Ann said...

The reviews for Everest so far seem to be better than SP. I love how there are currently more positive than negatives yet awards watch is only talking about the negative ones, lol. Go figure.

Jake looks great in Venice. I love him at Film Festivals :)

Is anyone here going to TIFF to see Demolition?

BlueJean said...

"Can't wait to see some Demo stuff."

Same here. I'm looking forward to all three of them (SP + Ev + Demo), but most of all to Demo! :)))

bobbyanna said...

Tina, maybe all the Venice hoopla for Everest, and Jake being there, will benefit Southpaw. Fingers crossed. : )
