Trailer park

It's been a busy couple of days in the trailer park. Two different Everest trailers and a second Southpaw trailer premiered.

ETA: A short behind-the-scenes featurette for Everest:

So sit bad, relax and trailerize!

International trailer for Everest:

Domestic Everest trailer:

Southpaw #2: Shorter and less spoilery:

We also got three new posters. The second Everest poster rivals that Zodiac poster for the worst Jake-movie posters.

Southpaw is having some more fun with promotion. You can spar with Billy Hope:

Or you can go a different way:

But remember:

Billy Hope knows how to take a punch, but he also drops bombs. #Southpaw #Boxing #JakeGyllenhaal #Film

I saw a couple of references to Jake's appearing on the Graham Norton Show on 6/19. So maybe he is doing some European press for Southpaw in June, if that Grand Canal item is also correct.

In case anyone missed it at the end of the last post, EW talks to Antoine Fuqua. Some spoilers, I guess. And that great new SP poster.

Tatiana Maslany of Orphan Black fame:

"Everybody wants me so badly to want an Emmy nomination. I just want to work on a cool movie with Paul Thomas Anderson, or I want to work with a cool actor like Jake Gyllenhaal. That means something to me," she says, newly sprung from the hair and makeup chair between scenes.

Speaking of cool directors, I know it's blasphemy, but I think I'd rather see Jake in a Marvel movie than either a Wes Anderson or a Paul Thomas Anderson film.

Make of that what you will :)

There are some new footages in this new trailer, but I think Weinstein Company shouldn't have shown the scene with his daughter at the end of the trailer.
I can't stand this song of Eminem. In fact, I can't stand Eminem.

I love both directors, UV.

Thanks UV we've been really spoilt with all these new posters and trailers. The one with Rachel and Jake is beautiful.
I probably would have been the girl kissing Jake rather than sparring with him too!

There is not sure, if the scene is from beginning or the end, so it doesn't matter for me, I liked more the first trailer though. The song of Eminem is fantastic, perfectly fits to the movie, not sure how the Eminem is personally, but he is very talented artist in my opinion. SV

I saw a tweet earlier - someone in LA who said Jake was at the hotel pool. Well, he is did apparently win a Guys Choice Award tonight. Something called the Guy Con?

Also saw this:

You have to be there, but Jake Gyllenhaal just told the best joke of the night at #GuysChoice

And this funny, unrelated, tweet earlier:

Does anyone else yell out jake gyllenhaal's name while they do sit ups now? #Southpaw

Yes, IHJ has pictures from event, but I have no clue what kind of award is this, but I would rather see another awards. Moreover that award artefact looks horrible. But he got it from Rachel McAdams and she looks amazing. SV

BlueJean said...

What did he win it for? Nightcrawler? I haven't got a clue what it's for either. It looks like a deer antler!

Aren't the Tonys today? I'll keep my fingers crossed for Ruth! Part of me hopes she wins it, and another part of me hopes she doesn't - cos if she wins, it's ever more disappointing Jake wasn't even nominated.

BlueJean said...

*ever = even*

Sorry.

Ann said...

This award show is similar to the MTV Awards. Usually voted on by fans and viewers of the channel (Spike TV). I know MTV Awards are just a way for celebs to promote whatever they're doing. I'm sure these awards are too. Especially seeing Rachel give Jake the award just seems like a way to promote Southpaw to another audience.

Monica said...

I saw the tweet that he was in the pool last night, but thought it was a mistake. Good promo for Southpaw!

BJ, I'm rooting for Carey Mulligan!

Sag Actor said...

That 2nd Everest poster is beyond lame, the 11st is much better.
Jake appeared on the Guy choice awards a few years ago when he presented it to Jeff Bridges.

BlueJean said...

OK, thanks guys! :)

I thought Spike TV usually pre tapes the awards show. Anyone have any idea when the show will be on air?

Chica said...

Congratulations to Helen Mirren the Queen! A much deserved Tony win for best actress.

I don't keep own when the Spike awards will air but I willie skipping the show respite Jake winning. I know its PR for Southpaw but I have my limits!

The Awards end the network make me cringe.

I like the second poster too, the first poster looks like a cheesy still from a made for TV movie from the 90's!

Chica said...

I hate auto correction my smart phone Lol!

The spike awards will air June 18 at 9pm

UltraViolet said...

Some Tony tweets:

another montage to remind us JAKE GYLLENHAAL GOT SNUBBED. #TonyAwards

Love that Jake Gyllenhaal got a mention about being overlooked for the #TonyAwards

theyve been teasing josh groban for 2 hours now. its like that time they teased jake gyllenhal for like 3 hrs during the oscars/goldenglobes

I missed the first half hour, but apparently Alan Cumming mentioned both Jake and Hugh Jackman's lack of nominations. (Just saw the opening number - they mentioned them in their song, along with Harvey Weinstein, who was in the audience and was a good sport. Probably because they also mentioned all the money his play is making.)

Monica said...

I missed the beginning. I started watching when Helen Mirren won. I like to watch because of the musical performances; yesterday really enjoyed Fun Home and The King and I.

I wonder about The Little Shop of Horrors, if we will have some video of him singing or at least hear him singing.

I am beginning to think Guycon is the equivalent of Icon? Or it could be a tribute to Lou Bloom.

UltraViolet said...

That was... unfortunate.

But it does sound like one word, GuyCon. Makes more sense than anything I could come up with.

Ann said...

That Terrence Howard thing was awful, Lol. I couldn't even make the whole minute it lasted.

Here is what I have found Guycon means HAHAH

"A guy that women look at as an unobtainable prize, that lucky ladies might happen to snag and wear on their arm like a bangle. Men who are amazing, and hold that standard high, making the everyday man look bad."

But not sure if the price was meant in that sense. SV

Apparently in Italy the film will be called Billy "The Great", in France "La rage au ventre". Sometimes it makes sense for a foreign distributor to invent a new title if people don't understand the original one. The German distributor keeps the original title even though hardly anyone knows over here what 'southpaw' means.

BlueJean isn't quite as lucky, "Southpaw" will be released in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg on September 10 instead of August 6: Entertainment One Benelux laat vandaag weten dat Southpaw niet vanaf 6 augustus 2015, maar vanaf 10 september 2015 in de bioscoop draait (Filmliefhaber.com).

I didn't notice that "Southpaw" will fortunately skip the Ischia Global Fest:

Anonymous said...

That's fun...
In Italy, as I can see, they have moved 'Southpaw-BillyTheGreat' from the end of July to the 3rd of September, too...
But it's ok, it's kind of good sign... August has always been a 'dead' period for movies, here... I mean, they tried to change things in the last years and push some titles in summer, but people still seem to prefer to stay 'outside' and go to the beach... :))

Are there any rumors about a possible Everest premiere in Venice, during the Festival? More probably, Telluride and Tiff?

I liked the Everest trailer, even if - as someone said - I think it gave away almost every scene shot by Keira Knightley (and maybe too much from that storyline). Best footage: Jake/Scott Fisher touching the 'top of the world' with his finger... very powerful!!

Southpaw will premiere in Shanghai. And so soon. Hope we get some reactions.

Apparently, Jake visited the Picasso Museum in Paris today. One of my favorite places in Paris.

Nocturnal Animals will have a six-week shoot:

Ford will film Nocturnal Animals in a very tight six-week window between designing collections, wrapping the day before Thanksgiving. ‘I wrote the screenplay, I’m directing it, I’m producing it and I’m financing it,’ he says. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if he also wrote the theme tune, sang the theme tune.

I think you can watch Jake on Canal+, but you have to set your computer to France time.

LikeMonaLisa, thanks for that information. I think that's a pretty good score. Great to hear the praise for Jake.

50 Cent to InStyle on Jake:

Jake Gyllenhaal plays a fighter in Southpaw, but the actor’s co-stars have nothing but love and respect for him off-screen. Just ask Curtis Jackson III, aka 50 Cent, who stars as a promoter working with Gyllenhaal’s heavyweight boxing champ in the upcoming drama. “He did an amazing job in this film,” Jackson recently told reporters at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. “People who see it will be blown away by his performance.”

By now, Gyllenhaal is well-known for his chameleon-like ability to transform his appearance for a role. He lost nearly 30 pounds to play a sleazy photographer in 2014's Nightcrawler, only to gain it back plus put on 15 pounds of muscle for Southpaw a year later. Still, Jackson was surprised to see the results of his co-star's physical transformation firsthand. “Right after we finished [filming], I went to go see Nightcrawler, and that definitely wasn’t the same person I was with on set,” said Jackson, adding that Gyllenhaal had a “whole different vibe, whole new energy” from one film to the next.

And the admiration didn’t stop there. Jackson was equally impressed by Gyllenhaal’s performance in Constellations on Broadway earlier this year. “He’s really got some depth to him,” Jackson said of seeing his co-star take the stage, pointing out that Gyllenhaal knows exactly how to tap into his broad range of talent when signing on for projects. “He makes amazing choices,” he said.

And I saw this tweet about the Tidal clip:

Ok...so obviously Jake Gyllenhal is #TeamTidal, not only does Tidal have an exclusive clip of #Southpaw, but he also introduces it.

UltraViolet said...

Check that - it may not be airing today. Makes sense.

Ann said...

I don't know that I would say Jake is #TeamTidal. If The Weinstein Company is using it as a means to promote Southpaw, he may not have a choice in doing a clip to introduce the film and be involved. I definitely reached my limit in what I'd do for Jake, lol. I won't sign up for Tidal just for a SP exclusive.

that is sort of contradicting, a story is lame but its a 8.4 rating? Basically they are saying Jake carried the film to an 8.4 rating.

I got the same impression from those who saw it at Cannes. The story isn't the strongest but Jake's performance is what makes the film.

Southpaw now ranking 7.4 here in China, after more movie goers voting (220 people ranked till now). The most criticism was the story -- too cliche. Jake was good though, maybe not great as what he did in Nightcrawler, still very convincing as a boxer. But the role itself was kind of flat. And they said the hope for Oscar was slight.

Neither Jake, Fuqua or the trainer have anything to do with the promo posters. It’s the job of the marketing people, they flipped the photo on the poster.

“Gyllenhaal gives this conventional story a shot of excitement. Southpaw sticks to tried-and-tested genre rules, yet an edgy cast — led by formidable leading man Jake Gyllenhaal — keeps the story in sharp focus. Here Gyllenhaal gets the makeover as a bloodied, battered but magnetic prize-fighter. An award-worthy Gyllenhaal is the main attraction.” - HR review

“The muscled-up actor makes good on Harvey Weinstein’s awards talk for the boxing movie.
In the South of France, the exec talked about how Gyllenhaal deserved an Oscar nomination last year for “Nightcrawler,” and suggested that his company would be working hard to put the actor on the Academy’s slate this year. And he’d be smart to do so, because a fierce Gyllenhaal is indeed the biggest draw, and the likeliest awards contender, in “Southpaw.”
The actor, who starved himself into a skeletal look for last year’s “Nightcrawler,” beefed up and muscled up significantly for “Southpaw,” to the point where he’s believable as a light heavyweight boxer.
It’s the kind of physical transformation beloved by voters, coupled with a ferocious but haunted performance as a fighter who wrecks his life and struggles to get it back. He’s brutal in the ring and fragile out of it, a potent combination in itself.
Yes, we’ve seen this before, and no doubt we’ll see it again. But even when his punches are being telegraphed, Gyllenhall still hits hard enough to warrant the awards talk.” - The Wrap review by Steve Pond, awards editor

Interesting I didn't know it was the poster that was the issue, I thought it was the fight scenes themselves. Maybe poster was turned that way for fans to interact. It just doesn't or shouldn't matter if its just the poster. I don't see the big deal, it's not a story about boxing or how to box.

Anonymous said...

What fight scenes? The bitching people didn't see the movie. They're criticizing or mocking the stance in the stand-in poster. A few wiseass talk about the boxing in the trailer too, but all we see are split seconds of punches not complete scenes. They're talking out of their asses, until yesterday nobody, no reporter or boxing specialist had any complains about the boxing scenes in the trailer. Not even about the poster, for that matter. The minute a reddit user adressed the stance in the photo, they all jumped on the bandwagon.

Southpaw said...

It's not a stretch of imagination that maybe the new trainer teaches Billy how to fight orthodox, how to be a better fighter and a better man by stop being a southpaw in the ring and in life. Maybe we'll see Billy box southpaw in the first scene of the movie and orthodox for the last fight. Maybe with a little imagination twitter people will stop being A-holes who live to vent on the internet. Maybe we should care more about the reviews, great for Jake as expected, than nitpicking the boxing style.

UltraViolet said...

Since none of us knows boxing well enough, we can't really say if it's bullshit or not. Until we hear an explanation from the filmmakers, it's all just speculation. The fact that they haven't offered an explanation is odd, to me. I just saw a tweet suggesting that the title is more metaphorical than literal. But I think that would be weird.

I don't care - it won't alter my enjoyment of the film at all. But if it's a mistake, it's embarrassing, no two ways about it.

Those reviews are good - better than I expected for the movie overall. So happy to hear the kudos for Jake's performance. Hope that continues.

Another great ad during the NBA finals. Love how it and this spot end with a punch. Couple of nice new bits in there.

Taran Killam was on a local NYC channel discussing Little Shop. He goes on and on about Jake's abs and Southpaw. It's pretty funny.

He says rehearsals start on Monday.

I'm scared for the reviews but the early reactions have been good so far.

I don't care if the story is not original or cliché while is well executed. There's a lot of good movies with basic scripts that have worked well. Whiplash for example, its story is generic and predictable but everything else is simple perfect. The same can be said for Prisoners, the script is the weakest part of the movie (IMO) but the direction, the photography and the acting is so on point that it doesn't matter. So I just wish that Southpaw is well done and acted.

As for the boxing experts I guess they are the same that emerged during the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, those who doesn't care about boxing the rest of the year. I agree that the responsibility for the poster is for the marketing people, but I don't think the picture is actually flipped, if you look at what can be seen of his tattoos.

Well I for one have decided not to look at rotten tomatoes on this one ( I don't think it will grade higher than 60). Critics on rotten tomatoes do not have a lot of influence on box office as anyone can be a critic on the internet. I just hope fans love this film and that it does really well financially. I always hoped that Southpaw would be a breakthrough for Jake at the box office (not modestly successful).

I think Demolition is still Jake's chance at an Oscar nomination and hopefully a win. I just wished Harvey W would have kept his mouth shut about SP and Oscar. I think it could take away from Jake's chances with Demolition and once again put Jake as a dark horse for another year.

Ann said...

Maybe I don't read enough reviews but I can't believe people are paid to write these. I could barely make it through The Hollywood Reporter review.

I wish they could leave out the awards hype but I guess Harvey Weinstein is to blame for that for putting it out there at Cannes.

I'm glad to see Jake getting praise for his performance. I hope that continues.

Monica said...

Variety and Screen Daily are rotten at the Rotten Tomatoes. :/ But at least Jake is being praised.
Variety's review is on point about "revenge"!

I hate this talk about Oscar. One of the things I loved about Nightcrawler is that people started talking about it after seeing the film, not before.

I read somewhere that Nocturnal Animals will be shot in LA.

I agree about the Oscar talk Monica. Unfortunately I think the same thing will happen when Demolition is released.

That Variety review is not good. Definitely damning Jake with faint praise. And focusing on HW's Oscar talk. Hopefully the Wrap will go in as an official review and a positive one. Not sure how many more reviews will come out before next month.

Jake in London yesterday.

"I hate this talk about Oscar. One of the things I loved about Nightcrawler is that people started talking about it after seeing the film, not before."

Oh, monica! I agree. Makes me very nervous. It's unseemly,IMO. It's such a long journey from this point to a nomination. A lot can happen in the meantime. Several years ago, I think I read that Harvey alienated so many people during an Oscar campaign, that several movie industry people got together to successfully derail his plans.

I'm kind of expecting Southpaw to get some mixed reviews, but the raves for Jake are very encouraging. It wouldn't be the first time we see a brilliant acting performance in a mediocre movie. Although I think Southpaw will be much better than mediocre. : )

It's a waste of talent IMO. He put a lot for this role ...
He needs to start working with good / great directors.

UltraViolet said...

He can only work with directs that want to work with him, Monica. I'm sure jake isn't turning down Scorcese roles.

I don't think we can say it's a waste without even seeing the movie. Maybe Jake got something out of it that no one else was going to give him.

Ann said...

There's only been, what, 4 reviews? I'm not stressing them. No one has bashed Jake yet which to me is a good thing. I always try to focus on the fact that regardless of awards, ratings, reviews, etc I'm just glad to see Jake's performance in a film because he's always outstanding no matter what the material is. And I agree with UV that I doubt he's turning down huge films with more impressive directors.

Monica said...

Maybe Jake got something out of it that no one else was going to give him.

You're right. I hope.

BlueJean said...

"He needs to start working with good / great directors."

You're saying the directors he has worked with are mediocre? I think he's doing quite well. If he hadn't worked with Denis Villeneuve, we wouldn't have had the wonderful, wonderful 'Enemy'. Jake is prepared to take risks, and so are his directors. Well, most of them ;)

I hope 'Southpaw' won't be too "ordinairy", like a lot of boxing movies. For me, Jake's performance is the only thing I'm interested in, since I don't care for boxing in general. Jake will be spectacular, I'm sure - and I'm not even thinking "Oscars" yet - it's far too soon.

BlueJean said...

The only thing I'm really pissed off about is that the 'Southpaw' reviews have so many spoilers. There won't be any surprises left to enjoy :(

UltraViolet said...

Ugh - I've skimmed to try to avoid spoilers. Are there even more than in the trailers? That's annoying.

I think the Variety review is close to a slam on Jake. That last line - that Eminem might have done better - is pretty bad. Hoping the non-trade critics are a little less influenced by Harvey-hatred. I do think that bias tainted the review, but it is still ominous.

No, I love Dennis. He's the best director with whom Jake worked in recent years. I do not like Fuqua, and they will work together again.

That last line - that Eminem might have done better - is pretty bad.

Yikes, I lost it. It's okay if he's upset with the Oscar thing, but damn this is nonsense.

bobbyanna said...

As far as I can recall, Variety always has rotten moviee reviews in general. I rarely ever agree with them. I'd worry if I did. THR sounds like it was positive. You know, sometimes when areviewer is sarcastic and slams an actor, it has the opposite effect of what they intended. That reviewer marginalized himself, IMO. Also, if he's writing for an industry publication, a lot of industry people know the blood sweat and tears that goes into something that is so casually dismissed. It doesn't reflect well on the reviewer. If he's trying to "break away from the pack" he might find that he's marginalized himself, and no one cares about his opinion.

Anonymous said...

Whether you like Fuqua or not, he has some sort of a status in Hollywood. I believe Denzel Washington can pick any director as he wants but he is also going to work with Fuqua again. That says something.

The directors Jake worked with recently might not be flat out A-list and appeal to audience or award bodies immediately but they are interesting and most importantly give Jake great opportunity and even some sort of say in how to create a character which Jake loves to do a lot but which I doubt you can do that with the more established directors.

Besides, Jake has worked with many A-list directors when he was younger but the end products were not always great either.

I also doubt he has turned down great projects with great directors. Most of the time you have to take what is offered to you.

I just think he knows what he is doing.

Ann said...

I disagree. With Ang Lee, he gave one of the best performances of his career. The same with Sam Mendes on Jarhead.
Zodiac is the only one he wasn't that great, but it wasn't a disaster. Still, it's one of the best films of Jake and Fincher career.

Anonymous said...

But I bet Jake felt much much happier working with Dan Gilroy for Nightcrawler than working with David Fincher or Ang Lee etc despite the fact that the latter two are so much better directors than Dan. I think he felt more fulfilled by actually creating a character by himself, with his own fingerprint all over it than just being used as some sort of a tool by his directors.

SP script was always considered as cliché from the very beginning. According the previous review from people seeing SP in Cannes there was stated it is the direction which keeps movie in good shape apart form JG performance, so together with an acting from Jake and Whitaker it is obvious they talk about awards. Some movies are considered as award worthy even before their release. Revenant is in award talks too and there is not even trailer out. What is difficult to predict is the top five, but Jake will be in talks in any case. I can understand no one wants to be disappointed, me neither, but if it's not Jake, it would be other actor. What I mind HW is talking about revenge. This is not appropriate and it may upset some Academy members. No matter how they decided previously, it's their decision and should be respected, even if people, me included, disagree. They are 1 600 members and it is already respectable number.

SP is giving the space for actor's awards, maybe cinematography and direction. I don't mind they talk about it. Mission Impossible is not mentioned in this context for example. Usually they are right about awards even if I would wait for wide release as well, because last year Unbroken wasn't Oscar worthy, but they predicted it in advance, even I don't know why, if there was such an unexperienced director.

Honestly for me the Demolition is just annoying fly in this awards context and I would move it to March. It won't be interesting for awards IMHO. There are much more interesting movies and performances expected. Everest doesn't hurt, but there is still some chance he may split himself out with two leading movies. I still feel the SP is the right movie for him as for BO as for awards. SV

I never understood this, everybody says that, but for me it was the most boring Fincher's movie. SV

The point is not who he was happier or not. He gave great performances with such A-listers directors as well.

SV, for the Oscar, Southpaw need to receive better comments and be a hit. So far, only Jake has a chance.

Maybe no A-list directors want to work with Jake these days. So it is not up to him choosing. Who knows?

Anonymous said...

"That last line - that Eminem might have done better - is pretty bad'

I read that and thought he meant the music not the performance. Wasn't there a sentence about the music score and a name and the way he place the sentence made it seem as if it meant E could have done better as Billy.

"Honestly for me the Demolition is just annoying fly in this awards context "

I think Demolition is sort of like Nightcrawler, nearly off everyone's radar now could be good.

Piruleta said...

Honestly for me the Demolition is just annoying fly in this awards context

Why?

BlueJean said...

I just think he knows what he is doing.

I think so too. We mustn't forget that Jake was pretty young when he worked with some of his A-list directors. Even in his recent Esquire interview, he said: “I took things because they were jobs. I mean, people are paying you money, you’re 26, are you kidding?”
Don't know if he's talking about 'Rendition', PoP or maybe even 'Brothers', but he has always said he was in awe of Ang Lee and David Fincher. I think he still has a lot of respect for Ang Lee. Not too sure about Fincher ;)

I think that, at this point in his career, Jake is confident enough to work with people he trusts and admires, rather than the "biggest names". People who'll give him freedom and support, and in return he'll give them his all. I think that's a wonderful thing and it usually shows in his performances.

"I love Dennis. He's the best director with whom Jake worked in recent years."

I agree, Monica!

BlueJean said...

"Maybe no A-list directors want to work with Jake these days."

You think that? Why? Does Jake have a bad reputation? I can't recall I've ever read anything like that.

Anonymous said...

Piruleta I just see it as light comedy with maybe drama components, if there is not SP OK, but if there will be re-directed attention into two movies he has no chance at all, I know it is too soon, but I'd rather focus on one movie and SP is stronger. According some hints Demolition is the worst from 3 last Valee's movies (DBC, Wild) and Naomi is mediocre in it. I don't see it as strong enough movie. As someone says above it is like NC, but look what happened with it, moreover NC was extremely and rarely original. If performance in the movie is excellent, it's not bad to have HW behind, even if I am not fan of any shameless campaign, but sometimes there is not other way especially if award is worthy and deserved. From Rocky via Raging Bull, Cinderella Man, Alli, Hurricane, Fighter, Wrestler - all of them were priced somehow, Demolition is easier to overshadow by other movies, not that SP, but I say my POV, it may be different. But all the physical transformation in combination with tough fighter vs emotional part is more attractive. SV

Anonymous said...

Southpaw just make lots of money- that is what Jake needs the most. I heard mostly positive things about Demolition but I don't think I can go on couple of preview commentaries that really liked it or disregard it because others didn't like it.

The only Southpaw will be awards worthy is if it's a strong money maker for months and with the lack of buzz behind SouthPaw I fear that will not happen.

UltraViolet said...

Guys, I understand the impulse but we have no idea what will be nominated for Oscars next year. There are four reviews of Southpaw. Hardly anyone has seen it or Demolition. This is all really baseless speculation. I don't want to spend the summer weighing Jake's Oscar chances based on mis/dis/no information from AwardWatch. I'm not saying don't talk about it but let's not analyze it at this level when no one knows what s/he is talking about.

I hate to take the fun out of all of this more than a month before the movie even comes out.

Don't forget the most important performance from Jake coming up, I cannot wait for it. I will not be there-the one year I do not go to NYC in July. Jake's singing debut..........yippee. I hope this bodes well for future musicals on Broadway, we all know Jake is a huge fan of rap. Now only if he good get a part in the Hamilton hip hop musical on Broadway, LOL. Just kidding.

UltraViolet said...

Also, re: the Variety review's last line. It's definitely not about the score:

James Horner’s synth score adds to the film’s brooding tenor, while the soundtrack was produced by Eminem, who was once floated as a possibility to play Billy Hope, and who might well have done more with the role — which is to say, less.

UltraViolet said...

I did post a video from Taran K talking about the role and also posted lots of photos of Jake from the Southpaw press junket. I don't want to discourage conversation but it's dispiriting to have it all be about whether Jake is going to get an Oscar nomination.

Ann said...

It's the easy to say Eminem would've been better as the expectations for him wouldn't have been as high.

UltraViolet said...

I agree, Ann. I was just pointing the line out because I think the Variety reporter didn't really give jake a good review. He seemed to dislike Jake's performance more than he liked it. The other three reviews do all praise Jake. And, it is only four reviews overall. Not a great start. But I hope the film is a hit, and the reviews won't matter.

Anonymous said...

I don't know why. But the fact is that Jake didn't work with any A-list directors last 5 years or so and I doubt it's himself turning these auteurs down all the time so there must be some other reasons, no?

Piruleta said...

I don't mind the Oscar talk but is too early and I don't think is refreshing, SV, in fact is stressing me out LOL! I don't think it's fair to judge a movie on whatever will be good or not, just because of its Oscar chances. I don't think Southpaw was meant to be an Oscar contender and I was sure HW words would do more harm than good, because the critics are going to see and judge this film in a pretty different way. We already have the proof in some of those reviews.

I asked about Demolition because it surprises me that you want to see it delayed just because, again, the Oscars. At this moment I just want to see these films and wish they do well, whether they will earn awards or not.

That said, can't wait to see all those interviews especially the Graham Norton show.

PS.: UV (and everyone else) thanks for all the updates, always forget to tell.

bobbyanna said...

This is a happy time for Jake's fans! There are three interesting movies coming out for Jake. All of these movies are generating positive buzz for his work. It's an exciting time. I'm going to ignore HW generated chatter. I hate that Harvey has framed the discussions about SP, so that the media focus is on an awards season, which is at least 6 months away. That's just silly. I intend to ignore Harvey and the "Awards Season tribe" of journalists who are just passing time trying to generate controversy, & traffic to their websites during a slow period.

With the exception of Jurassic Park, My impression is the Summer Box office seems slow in general. I'm not looking for any miracles with SP. There are tracking polls that predict how a movie will perform, and I think at this point, SP will probably do OK, but not spectacular. I'm not worried about it. Curtis Jackson has a following out here too, and that will generate more interest in the movie.

When it comes to directors, Jake seems to work with the directors that are saying something unique to him, and that he can collaborate with.

I agree with what Anon said:
"I think he felt more fulfilled by actually creating a character by himself, with his own fingerprint all over it than just being used as some sort of a tool by his directors."

I thought Dan Gilroy's direction in Nightcrawler was excellent. I hope Jake and Dan work together again. In fact, my personal wish list us for Jake to some day work with Duncan Jones again because SC showcased some fantastic acting (in the pod scenes especially.)

My only frustration with Jake is that I wish his movies had bigger budgets. : ) But this is a great time and I'm looking forward to the interviews, and the TV appearances!

BlueJean said...

Ah yes, Source Code! Must re-watch that. Soon! :)

bobbyanna said...

Another thought on critics: A critic may dismiss SP by saying this story is predictable, cliche', manipulative, etc. but they aren't saying anything. It doesn't really matter if a story is a cliche'. If it manipulates the viewers' emotions and gets them to react, well, isn't that the whole point? LOL! What really matters, just my opinion, is if the movie is well made, and the audiences can understand and respond to it. It has to work. From the audience reactions I've seen on Twitter SP works.

Ann said...

Well said Bobbyanna. It is indeed a good time for fans :)

One thing I've noticed with Jake's films is they seem to generate buzz and praise past the time they're in theaters. Currently, I see people on social media praising End of Watch, Prisoners, Zodiac, and Nightcrawler. While that's not necessarily good for box office numbers, I think it is a good thing in the long run because it shows that his films and work hold up well over time instead of just during initial hype and box office runs.

Yesss! Thanks, Ann, I agree. And you can go back even further:October Sky is regularly shown in schools, and students love to tweet about it. Donnie Darko resonates with people from 16 to 40- something. (My young cousin thought I was so cool because I knew about that movie! He was 19 and I was...older. ; ) When I asked if he'd heard of it, his eyes lit up and he got excited, loves the movie.) One thing I really enjoy is how new fans discover Jake's movies. For example, Rendition didn't get much love when it came out, but people respond to it differently now.

Anonymous said...

I agree with everything bobbyanna said. And I want to add that I think people need to be more relaxed with this award talk. Not every movie is meant to be an Oscar player, you know. And a movie not appealing to Oscar doesn't necessarily mean that movie is not quality because as we all know Oscar doesn't really measure its movies by quality only. In fact I find a lot of Oscar movies very boring and forgettable while a lot of movies that won nothing great to watch. Oscar is great and all but I doubt Jake really has award in mind when choosing and making his projects. I think he just wants to work and make good movies. I like that from him than other actors obsessed with Oscar bait but boring movies. Movies like End of Watch and Enemy are not Oscar movies from the very start but they are great important notes in Jake's resume anyway and I bet those movies mean to him as much as a movie like Brokeback Mountain who did win him something.

UltraViolet said...

The Chris Evans show, where Jake was going after Nick Grimshaw. Didn't see any tweets from that one, so I don't know if he was on or if they will be playing it later.

Good points about the longevity of Jake's work. Most of his films have gained greater appreciation as time has gone on. That is a pretty good testament to his work.

Glad we're all on board with the no-stress train. Let's enjoy Southpaw for the movie it is and for Jake's performance, if we can. Speaking of which, some new photos.

Man, the spitting blood one is graphic.

"in fact is stressing me out LOL! I don't think it's fair to judge a movie on whatever will be good or not, just because of its Oscar chances"

Piruleta I am stressed from much worse things. No one is judging movie based on Oscar chances here, I will watch the movie, if it is Oscar worthy or not, but many people do otherwise. And there is a connection between future career and those awards. As I underlined before, it was my POV. If I tell you that twitter posts stress me, will you stop to post them? Probably not. I don't see anything wrong with such a discussions. But it is not life important and in no way I want to stress you or someone else. I care about this more than fan pictures, that’s true, but we share at least the same that we want to see great movies with Jake and I see this is the way. Nothing has to be personal though, I would rather pick better words before blaming someone from taking other opinions and posting it here as own ones, so to speak, this hurts.

I talked about Demolition just because 3 movies are too much in 3 months + yes, it harms. Talking about good directors working with Jake, there is half and half. Majority of them pick Oscar winners obviously, on the other hand Jake seems fully ok with directors working with before, that's why he decided to work with Fuqua again, because he doesn't follow so called experts’s reviews that he is not a good director, Washington worked with him even more. So Jake is going his own way, but at the same time I think those top ones will come later when more people recognize his work via awards, this works, thousands people know his work today thanks to NC Oscar buzz. That's all. But well let's talk about something else. The most important is to have just happy day and enjoy the real life, I have no problem to talk about something else. SV

I thought link above is audio only. I must listen to whole interview too. But one thing is interesting there, which relates to Variety bad review. Variety says something in sense that Fuqua and SP cinematographer didn't bother to shoot the boxing fights properly with some shadows and lights like in Raging Bull or Fighter. But Jake is saying there now, that Fuqua's intention was to have those fights straight forward like you watch HBO or real fights in the ring. I am glad Jake mentioned it as well, because I think it was stated in some previous interviews as well. Raging Bull is moreover black & white movie, it's a bit different. SV

SV, the AW poster who saw the movie in Cannes really complimented the fight scene photography, so I did dismiss that Variety criticism. Another writer I like linked the Variety review, complimenting the writing. But to me, the writer seemed to be purposefully showing off in the same way he accused Jake of performing in the move.

A photographer posted this for TBT:

#tbt #JakeGyllenhaal portrait that I shot many a moon ago in #London I watch almost every film he's in, mostly because he was such an up-for-it, funny, friendly chap. Give him an Oscar, someone! #actor #Hollywood #men #celebrity #portrait

Yes, UV, I remember that another poster, I forgot the name, the one who has his own blog maybe you mean the same one, that fighting scenes are brilliant. I also dismiss criticism of Jake's acting, that he is mumbling and is not convincing. They complained about mumbling even in Heath Ledger's case in BBM and finally it is one of the best performances, I remember Daniel Days Lewis complimented Heath in one acceptance speech and it means more for me once DDL is Mr. Actor. The last teaser of SP shows more from Jake's acting and at least according this it looks performances are the strongest part. So maybe Variety guy had really bad day or dislike Jake. SV

Jake was really funny and charming on the Spike Awards. I loved The Shining joke he made.

The montage they had of his films was excellent.

The Variety Nightcrawler review was similarly dismissive of Jake. Different writer, though.

I tried to find other reviews to see if he has anything against Jake, but I found nothing.

BTW, just saw it:

You might be tired of me saying what a great writer @JustinCChang is, but hopefully not of his writing. On SOUTHPAW: http://variety.com/2015/film/reviews/southpaw-review-jake-gyllenhaal-1201521347/ …

@GuyLodge @JustinCChang Loved reading this, especially on Gyllenhaal's performance and, natch, any positive adjective attached to Rachel.

@ben1283 @JustinCChang You two are the most dedicated McAdamites I know.

@GuyLodge @ben1283 She is quite reliably the best thing in a bad movie (except MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, where both are pretty awful).

Monica, that guy seems full of himself. If he was really a good writer he would actually write a novel instead of turning a review into a novel.

I listened to the Nick Grimshaw interview again and someone asked Jake if he had any regrets in the films he's made. He said no then went on to say that he finds others opinions on his films less interesting than the lessons he takes away from making them. Just thought that was an interesting comment given the conversations that have been going on since the SP reviews started coming out. Whether or not he really means that is only for him to know I guess. I would think as an actor at some point you have to just ignore critics.

Good for him! There's no way he, or any actor, can please everyone. Plus I think that an actor's experience during the making of a film is totally different than what we (the audience) get to see in the end.

That's a very healthy way of looking at it. Good for Jake if he can keep that perspective.

The Guys Choice bit was short but pretty good. And Jake seems more comfortable on that Graham Norton couch.

New post with some new stuff.
