The 68th Cannes Film Festival is officially over. The prizes conferred by the jury were met with a fervent mix of appreciation, confusion and resentment. But the nine jurors, including Jake Gyllenhaal, seemed to look back on the 12 days as a wonderful opportunity to explore cinema and expand horizons.

Some snapshots from the final day, plus video of the jury on the steps of the Palais:

Some fun shots:

Please let me know if there is still a video playing automatically.

Monica, I forgot to say that the Awards Daily comment in the vein of the AW folks was annoying, but I think it was probably someone who posts in both places. Let's hope we're all moving past the silliness!

ILMonaLisa, Jake is winning that poll handily! It's not really a fair fight, though :)

forgot to say thanks to everyone who came out to play during the festival. So many tidbits, photos, sightings, videos and other goodies. It was a fun (almost) two weeks.

And thanks to IHJ for posting all the photos and videos so quickly. Stephanie must be exhausted!

Awww, it's all over!Im going to miss Jake looking gorgeous in his tux, sigh.
Bravo to Jake and the jurors for picking movies that truly moved them and deserved to be award, too much politics are involved just like other awards.

And bravo to you for all your fantastic Cannes posts, you and this blog are the best !

So after all the craziness of Cannes, Jake is indulging in a little dolci far niente. : ) Good for him!

portraits Jake Gyllenhaal - I remember photographing him in Sundance for Donnie Darko. Years later I was photographing him at the Venice Film Festival for Brokeback Mountain. The night of the premiere after the film played the lights went up and both Maggie and Kirsten Dunst were crying their eyes out. It is a moment I will never forget. Up next for him is Southpaw. #JakeGyllenhaal #Southpaw #DonnieDarko #NightCrawler #BrokebackMountain #cannes2015 #cannesfilmfestival #Cannes #portrait

I am not worried about HW and the Oscar thing. It's only May. The movie has to perform so well at the box office that Jake can even be considered for Southpaw. So we have a lot of hurdles to worry about.

I saw on the Jake Italy FB page that the two Brazilian women in the photo said Jake was nice even though they interrupted his dinner. But I don't see that on the photo comments. Is there another photo or post out there?

It's cool to read Vespa's comments on that Jake portrait. And to remember that gorgeous shot.

Thanks, everyone :)

Thanks UV for all of the updates and for making this a great place to interact with other fans. I'm glad that I came out of "lurking" mode and joined in :)

I'm also more worried about the Box office for Southpaw at this point. It seems these days it's harder for original films to do well at the box office. I hope Southpaw is able to overcome that obstacle.

Matt Barone @MBarone

I'm 100% here for Harvey Weinstein lobbying for a Jake Gyllenhaal Oscar nod as retribution for the NIGHTCRAWLER snub

I do not know why you will find it embarrassing, but I feel as if a nomination for SP comes, no matter how greatis Jake in this film, for me it will always be a compensation for the outrageous lack of nomination and perhaps also the victory for NC

It's way too soon for me to think about awards season and nominations. I also believe when Harvey uses "revenge" that's a pretty strong word and it somehow reflects poorly on what people did last year. Even though we agree that Jake was robbed last year, Harvey will need those same people to support Jake. People already have a negative impression of Harvey. He could end up sabotaging Jake, by being too overbearing and negative. I wouldn't be surprised if Jake finds it embarrassing. Harvey needs to look at his Public strategy if he really is serious about Jake, and stop all this posing. Actions speak louder than words. There are some powerful people in Hollywood who live to defeat Harvey no matter whether he happens to be right. If he wants Jake to get a nomination, he needs to act a lot smarter than I'm seeing. I'm just not comfortable with the "revenge" thing (even if it is true. : ) )

Monica said...

FP, it's embarrassing when talking about revenge. This can have a negative effect on the film.

UltraViolet said...

I think it would be embarrassing in awards season. But we're so far out of it that no one is really paying attention. I'm not worried. And like FP, i love hearing someone say it. This can't be the only narrative, but I think this is just IndieWire regurgitating HW's words, right? It's not like he came out again and said it? (I didn't go to the link.)

They are really promoting Southpaw in Toronto. Canada got the Letterman SP promo and now this.

Thanks for the explanation on the photo, Monica!

FP said...

Bobbyanna you put things in a clear and reasonable way and you have a real point, but I feel as jake's fan that we always have to walk on eggshells and be afraid to tell the truth for fear of offending the sensibilities of someone else.

Jake was robbed at the Oscars, no one more than Jake speaks with his actions his talent and his courageous choices rather than sell himself as others do, HW will be exaggerated, lout and bully, but when he talk about revenge is right to me, JMHPOV

bobbyanna said...

FP/ UV I love seeing someone saying it, too. I think we all agree on that. I just feel like it's one thing when we say it here, and another when Harvey says it on a stage with a microphone in his hand. IMO, that's not very strategic. It just makes me uncomfortable. UV, you're probably right, and hopefully Harvey's bombast will fade as we get closer to awards season.

FP said...

Monica I appreciate your class, but after what I've seen this year and the embarrassing campaign of Bradley Cooper and his friends, I am not for the elegant approach that Jake has always used anymore

Ann said...

UV ~ Harvey didn't come out and say it again. IndieWire just picked up the story from last week. I agree that most people don't seem to be paying it much attention at this point. Hopefully Harvey keeps quiet and lets the film and Jake's performance speak for itself. Which I think it will.

“Also, Jake should watch out. The Italians are really angry that they didn't win anything in Cannes!“
I must read something as 100comments I left back... But I can confirm this, UV! Very disappointed... I don't mention any of the articles I've read, 'cause obviously they are not objective, being from the italian press... but they're very critical of the jury's work, generally (but no words about Jake) ...
And personally, I'm very disappointed too.. Jake and I clearly don't have the same taste in movies... :)) So, maybe, we could never go to the cinema together...that's a pity :)))

For things like this is why I think Weinstein is not doing Jake any favor with his comments

@LVon_Trier: Yes, just like Nicole got one for "Grace de Monaco" https://t.co/5SW27709h4

Claudia said...

Dissapointed why Tina, did you watch the movies at Cannes? No. How can you be dissapointed for something you know nothing about? You're confusing the angry fans with reality. Nobody from the press criticized the jury's work or Jake, very professional. Journos are upset because favorite movies didn't win but nobody says nothing bad about Jake or the jury. Angry fans who hate Jake make bad coments about him. Like you, they didn't watch the movies, just need a scapegoat.

Piruleta, @LVon_Trier isn't Lars Von Trier the director. It is a fan who makes negative coments, the hater who hates everything and uses internet to rant. He is a mad nobody.

Piruleta said...

Thanks Claudia. i still think that kind of comments are not good publicity.

UltraViolet said...

Claudia, I think Tina is disappointed for her country. No need to snap at her.

Hopefully the revenge comments will die down and we'll get another photo of Jake in a beautiful Italian port.

Glad the auto play is gone!

Claudia... I'd love to answer you that yes, I was in Cannes, seeing all the movies there!! I would have enjoyed those days so much!
But no, I've just seen the movies who were released in Italy (3 of them), I'm looking forward to seeing the others, hoping they will be released sooner or later. My personal disappointment is the same of when you discover that an actor you admire hasn't your same artistic tastes and 'sources' of inspiration. I love Moretti, Sorrentino, Garrone so much, I think they are very inspiring though I know they are very dividing as directors (a lot of haters here in Italy) and I don't think these were their greatest movies too... But they still said a lot to me (each of them, especially Garrone), clearly not to the jury (I've also discovered right now that Jake has always been an Audiard's fan and I am not... so, another difference).
I can tell you for sure that in the 'italian' environment in Cannes (producers, distribuitors, television and press reporters, etc) there was a lot of disappointment, I have colleagues who were sent there for work and they felt this way...
I can also tell you for sure that some of the italian press was very critical of the jury's decisions (but as I said, nothing bad was said about Jake personally). They spoke generally about the jury and, sometime more specifically, about the Coens. From "il Fatto Quotidiano", which is the article that I remember the most (surely very passionate and not objective): "We love Coen Brothers as directors, and we will be loving them as well in the future, but they can go back directing now. Rarely we have seen a jury that seemed to have picked the wrong choice in each category, with the exception of Best Actor"...
So I don't think is a murder saying that at some level, in some part of the world, there is disappointment about Cannes verdicts, critics can't be arrogant with the jury, but they (and people who love cinema too) can express their opinion..
These are festivals, this is Cannes, and, as Del Toro said, "competition is imperfect"...

Awards are subjective. It's silly to get upset because someone liked a movie that you didn't care for. That's the beauty of film making. Movies speak to different people! I for one don't really care if I have the same taste in movies as Jake although I can say I do like the movies he chooses to make. I'm glad the Jury rewarded the movies which spoke to them personally. That's the whole point of having a jury rather than a mass. It's by critics and the public!

Anonymous said...

"I'm glad the Jury rewarded the movies which spoke to them personally. "

I thought that was the point of the festival and juries to pick movies that spoke to them not the masses, a country or film critics. I think the uproar is good for all the movies involved giving them a higher profile because let's fact it, if its not made in North America or Oscar bait most of these movies would be forgotten when the later in the year award season begins. Sad but true.

Can someone here, please type in the commentary section the Twitter reactions from SP screening? The writer didn't see it, he sounds negative and asks a question inciting to negativity. After two OK responses someone started insulting Jake's talent, maybe same haters from AW. I tried typing a response three times and it says my commentary seem spammy. Please, can anyone shut the negativity down by typing the enthusiastic opinions?

Hi, Marisa. Thank you for linking that. I kept seeing that and losing the link. It is absurd. But cool, I guess?

Anon 8:45, I don't think you should get upset about that. Two of the four comments complimented Jake's ability. One was negative, and the last one was measured. Ridiculous phrase for Gosling as naturalistic. I totally disagree with that, but what can you do.

Honestly, I didn't think the article was that bad, either. It's just a film blog trying to fill pages/get page views.

UltraViolet said...

I do understand, though, anon. There are so many times when I want to scream because people have the wrong perception of Jake. But it's hard to get through to some people.

LOL! Well, he also likes 'Jerry Maguire', which is also not my favorite to say the least - but what can we do?! ;)

FP said...

But he loves The Goonies so he's winning people lol :)

I do not give too much importance to the controversy post Cannese , it is what always happens in these situations, when someone wins there is always someone else who loses, in perspective if Italians are unhappy with the jury bet that the French have loved it lol :)
Also, to think that Jake's taste can overwhelming those of the Coen Brothers, G. Del Toro and Dolan, and his word, is the final and decisive to choose the winners in a jury composed of undisputed talents, and venerated masters of cinema , it seems more a compliment than anything else to me , and I'd like to believe it :)

FP said...

I was also thinking that all these Jake's haters, that have appeared recently depend a bit on whether Jake's profile as an actor has grown tremendously , he quickly established himself as one the biggest talents of his generation, obscuring a bit those who until yesterday were the critics darling, it seems normal that fans of these other actors who competing with Jake for talent and the important roles try to diminish his merit in order to defend their heroes, it is stupid and immature but it is the way it works

Monica said...

Well, he also likes 'Jerry Maguire'

Terrence Malick likes Zoolander

Christopher Nolan likes Transformers

FP I would add that according some statistics and researches the most popular celebrities are at the same time the most hated, at least here it works, so once there will be poll, where Jake will top both extremes in similar poll, we can say he is on the top of his career. :-). SV

I loved the Esquire interview and Jake looks beyond gorgeous! The man can really rock a suit and the sun-kissed California look is super sexy. I thought Jake's honesty was really interesting. A lot of that overly diplomatic niceness that sometimes I find a little nauseating seemed to be completely discarded which was really refreshing. The reporter obviously found his in.

I really enjoyed reading comments from his directors about dealing with him on set.
I do wish they would've talked to Dan Gilroy. He's a director I'd like Jake to work with again. It seems as Jake evolves, matures, grows in his profession, he's developing some very specific methods of approach that are consistent no matter what the project is. It takes a very strong director to moderate some of that stuff so he doesn't go too far off the deep end, I guess.

The whole article seemed focused on his acting ability, which, if they're serious about an Oscar campaign, this will fit into it nicely. I would've liked to hear more about him personally. His comments about his parents difficulties getting work, and his observation that he was "a mess" as a kid really caught my interest.

I'd liked to read more on that. Most of us have heard his "Speedo" story, but I'm not talking about clever anecdotes, I guess I'd like to read more about the grit, and the struggles he had dealing with life, growing into the person he is.

I get the impression a lot was happening beneath the surface; going to an exclusive school, growing up in an industry where his parents got a lot of rejection and really struggled to achieve recognition. it was a very good article. I just wanted more. : )
I wonder if the author will take him up on doing more.

I also agree that when you shoot on a beach, it's silly to wear all those clothes in all those photos... ; )

People will always put down others, especially celebs on the internet. I'm sure a lot of those guys need to take a good look at themselves before putting down Jake, lol. I think he looks good, there was no way he was going to maintain his Southpaw physique after filming ended. We know he keeps in shape while he's in NYC but he's been on vacation and traveling so it's normal to take a break from working out when you're not in your normal routine.

Am I the only one who always feels a bit guilty looking at pics like that? It just seems like such an invasion of privacy but I do enjoy them too, lol.

I don't feel guilty. He's just sunning himself by the pool, and riding a motor bike, not exactly hiding. I'm glad to know he's still in Italy. Once he returns he'll be busy. In all the time I've followed Jake, aside from trips to Martha's Vineyard, it's rare to read about him actually taking a vacation. Not saying he never does, just that it's rare. Usually if he travels it's attached to his work.

I Remember reading that he did his Soul Cycle routine in the days leading up to Cannes, but his schedule in Cannes probably didn't allow much time for the gym in between the meals and the receptions and the late night pizzas etc. LOL! He looks good, and yes, malavika you must be psychic. LOL!
