Love the pictures, UV! Thanks!

Happy Sunday, everybody!

I was just reading the last comments from the previous post.

Hi Gabriela! FWIW - I think Xavier is a talented, dedicated filmmaker. He's still so young and has achieved so much already, how many directors his age can say that? I've seen a few of his films and they all show how courageous he is. That's why I'd love for Jake to work with him, as I've said in my previous comments.

As for "that" comment Xavier made - don't you think he might have been a bit overwhelmed, or as Tina said "awkward" about being in the same jury with Jake? That's what I was joking about.

We'll never konw whether Xavier's comment was a joke or not. Chances are Jake doesn't even know about it. And if he does, I'm sure they're both professional enough to keep their (potential) conversation to strictly business! ;) Peace.

However:
Ruth vs Dolan hmmm Dolan is hot... Go, Dolan! :P Cheeky, Monica! ;)

I hope being at Cannes will do a lot of good for Jake. He's able to meet people he might not have met otherwise. New people, new ideas, new scripts... I bet it's exciting for him!

BlueJean said...

*know* Sorry! ;)

UV said "I think we're all aware it was a joke on Dolan's part. But it was certainly a provocative comment, and he/you can't be surprised when people focus on it. "

"I think everyone here is just enjoying the potential awkward/comical/entertaining moments that might result."

Thanks UV. That's my reaction as well.

I saw trailers for Mommy at our local art house, but I haven't watched the movie yet. I'm looking forward to it. Dolan seems like a very accomplished director at such a young age.

Blue Jean, I agree Cannes presents wonderful opportunities for Jake. I'm glad he's there. : )

Jake's driver/bodyguard is certainly doing his job.

It was sweet that Jake took a pic with the younger fan although the man with her was a bit over excited?

Lol at the fans who shamelessly photo bombed the pic.

Photos of Jake from the Carol red carpet will be added in a few. Some tweets:

Shouts to Jake Gyllenhaal's hair on the Cannes opening night red carpet. Just makes me want to be a better person yenno, in regards to hair

From gawky BUBBLE BOY, to sex on a stick👍

Même Jake Gyllenhaal ne comprend pas la logique derrière la musique du red carpet... #Cannes2014 #WTF #questionmétaphysique
(Even Jake doesn't understand music on the red carpet)

Literally sat next to jake gyllenhaal during the amazing film, Mi Madre, directed by Nanni Moretti. We shared an arm rest- he's very nice☺️

And I hope some other people joined her. I don't know if this is the screening HW mentioned.

It was interesting to see Jake take the fan photo. He's definitely hit or miss that way, but it was nice of him. There's another video of him leaving his hotel and not signing, and he gets a little razzed.

I laughed at the photo bombers, too. Seize the day!

Focus Features buys Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals with Jake Gyllenhaal & Amy Adams. See you next year in the awards season! #Cannes2015

EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that a deal is near for worldwide rights on Nocturnal Animals, Tom Ford’s film followup to his debut A Single Man. The deal is driven by Focus Features, with Universal backing up Peter Schlessel’s label and handling the film overseas. The total deal is worth $20 million, I hear, with an 8-figure P&A commitment. That makes this by far the big deal of the festival, and one of the biggest in recent years. The deal is being closed by CAA and FilmNation’s Glen Basner.

Ford wrote the script, an adaptation of the 1993 Austin Wright book Tony And Susan. The film will star Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal and Ford is producing. The logline: out of the blue, Susan Morrow receives a package containing the manuscript of her ex-husband’s first novel. As she reads, she is drawn into the fictional life of Tony Hastings. As his ordinary life is violently set off course, Susan is forced to confront her own past. The title comes from one of the stories in the book.
Buyers were moved by Ford’s presentation at the Carlton Hotel days ago, and they have been making offers. Ford was initially reticent, because he wants creative control throughout production and to have a strong say in how the movie is released and marketed. He had the wherewithal to self-finance the film, but seemed to have a change of heart as the offers kept pouring in. Remarkably and maybe mercifully, this one didn’t require an all night bargaining session. It has been percolating since yesterday, when Ford became open to a worldwide deal.
Having all rights handled by one place simplifies things, and Schlessel’s team certainly distinguished itself in its handling of The Theory Of Everything, the Best Picture nominee which won Eddie Redmayne the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking, and a nomination for Felicity Jones for her portrayal of Jane Hawking. The film garnered a total of five Oscar nominations and grossed $120 million worldwide.

Sounds like a great deal. Fingers crossed that Tom Ford, Focus, Jake and Amy all come through again.

Added a couple of candids plus the Carol red carpet photos. Phew.

Focus Features looks like a good fit for "Nocturnal Animals". I'm curious if Joaquin Phoenix will join the cast.

Bless Cannes for enforcing a dress code. I never tire of seeing Jake in suits or a tux. I really love his look he had at Tetou.

Great news about Nocturnal Animals :)

Now that's private. LOL

That picture having lunch with PR manager is gorgeous, he looks so relaxed and seems he has a lot of fun with her. Honestly I am jealous a bit with Jake being there, it must be great to visit all these places and meet those interesting people, moreover being one of the jury member. In positive sense of course. But Cannes is simply beautiful location to be in, especially in the spring.

I read Carol reviews and according them Cate Blanchet and Rooney Mara gave excellent performances, Sea of Trees was booed on premiere by critics. I am curious which movie will be picked. SV

"Sea of Trees was booed on premiere by critics."

But I hear the audiences love it and cheered.

I think Dolan has become more besties with Sienna Miller.

I just watched a red carpet film of Sienna and Dolan in one of the videos that UV has embedded, its like Sienna has taken possession of Dolan as a photo prop, lol. It seems Jake is more inclined to hang out with the older directors on the jury.

Cate Blanchett's movie is getting a lot of praise.

Jake Talks About Rachel McAdams

Canadian actress Rachel McAdams is on cover of Marie Claire US and Jake has a quote on the article talking about his Southpaw co-star.

Jake Gyllenhaal, her costar in Southpaw (she plays the feisty, sexy, tough-as-nails wife of his embattled boxer), waxes similarly poetic: “As Gillian Welch says, ‘Some girls are blessed with a dark turn of mind.’ She has that beautiful darkness but exudes a real, true light. To be dark and light at the same time is as rare as it is infectious.” She’s also a joy to work with, he says: “I was excited to come to work. And that’s no bullshit. You can feel her heart when you are acting with her. I know the audience can, too, which is why people love to watch her.”

Nice words from Jake about Rachel.

Is this the jig you referred to, Malavika? LOL.

Looks like at least one other person joined the screening yesterday:

Gareth Molan ‏@garethmolan
Screening of #southpaw @Festival_Cannes last night was amazing. Great work @FuquaFilms @EAfilms

Since it was an industry thing, I guess we won't be getting a lot of reaction.

Just saw this article on all the boxing movies that are being released. Someone else brought up this point earlier, forgive me that I can't remember who it was, that you want to be the first or last in a series of films that comes out. This article makes that same point so that could work in Southpaw's favor being the first one out this summer!

“Whenever you have so many films that are the same,” says one veteran film distributor, “you want to be the first or the last, and not the one in the middle.”

UltraViolet said...

I hunk it was HM who made that point, and it is a good one. Being the last is better if you're talking awards chances. But since no one thinks the movie itself has a chance, then that makes it a little less important.

Someone posted this on the imdv forum for Southpaw. About the (ridiculous) character name of Billy Hope:

Jimmy Obvious or Bob Lefty

Jake seems to be having a low-key Cannes day. No sightings at films or on the Carlton terrace!

UltraViolet said...

Hagen, LOL about Ischia. I wonder if Jake, Antoine or anyone from the movie will go.

Update: A Jake sighting.

I've just noticed that cast working on SP - James Horner (music), Mauro Fiore (cinematography) and John Refoua (editing) were all working on Avatar, too and all of them had academy nominations (Fiore won) for it. I didn't know that. So they still may grab something in these categories despite the early release. Even if editing is usually going hand in hand with directing and I think there is a little chance. The smart and funny guy who runs the blog My New Red Pants wrote this interesting post, and I think that in this particular part he's spot on:

"I was already thinking about Jake as a "movie star" already before reading this news; when I saw Mad Max Fury Road this weekend they showed the trailer for Southpaw and before the trailer played there was one of those brief video introductions to said trailer and it was Jake - you know, where he goes, "Hi I'm Jake Gyllenhaal, I hope you enjoy this trailer for my new movie, Southpaw," or whatever. And I was surprised by this, in a weird way. Jake's obviously been making big movies for a good decade now but he actually felt like a brand, suddenly. Know what I mean?

Thanks for posting that FP, yeah he is usually spot on with all things Jake!
Looks like Jake is attending a event tonight for Women in Films.
He looks so good in a tux that I'm going to really miss when this over!

So is Karlovy Vary, one can call it a geriatrics resort. :-) Yet it's the picturesque location of a prestigious european film festival (they honoured Villeneuve a few years ago). This year, Ischia Fest's guests are the romanian movies in competition at Cannes, with directors Paul Haggis, Bille August as speakers, and...Weinstein (obviously).

--------

Indeed UV, it was me, and each news reinforces my belief:
- Bleed For This was picked-up by Open Road = possibly Sep-Oct wide release. Week campaign though. OR were good at promoting NC yet virtually unable to campaign Jake; with him being nominated left and right, all they could muster was a modest dinner attended by no influential insider. It doesn't bode well for Miller's awards thirst.
- Creed, slated for Thanksgiving, aims to be the ultimate crowd pleaser and launch a new franchise. Its producers don't care about being 3rd since they're betting on audiences seeing it based on Rocky nostalgia factor. Since Creed wrapped production recently, it can't come out before the end of the year and Thanksgiving is reminiscent of the original's release time (Christmas).
- The 4th boxing movie was acquired by HW to be released next spring (proof that an early release doesn't mean no awards ambitions). My guess is to keep it from being acquired by another distributor for this year and become a rival for Southpaw. Sly move on Harvey's part.

---------

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/cannes-miles-teller-will-bleed-again-as-fighter-vinny-paz-in-martin-scorsese-produced

"There's a rash of fighting stories coming up. Jake Gyllenhaal is also showing off his fighting form in Antoine Fuqua's "Southpaw," which Harvey Weinstein will screen for buyers and press at the market Tuesday night. At their presentation last week Weinstein promised that Gyllenhaal will win the Oscar he should have gotten for "Nightcrawler."
I think he "promised" that Jake won't be snubbed again for a nomination.

"Weinstein also has a Robert De Niro boxing movie "Hands of Stone" in which the "Raging Bull" star plays a coach to Roberto Duran. Weinstein is holding it back to spring 2016 so as not to compete with "Southpaw."

Tuesday night screening is the surprising part. What about the other screening? Considering the tweet UV posted above and the one I found, maybe that screening was for foreign distributors (with the new one for the press):

Google translation: SP is certainly the best film available at Cannes Market. JG will push strongly in the next Oscars.
Who follows it?
SP is the first, taking much advantage to the other.

Somebody with a better grasp of Spanish could enlighten us.

I knew that being a jury member will bring Jake more positive exposure than having a movie in competition but I had no idea how much exposure, how many elegant appearances and fancy soirees, how well he would go along with the Cohens and del Toro, or how big the Nocturnal Animals deal would be! Jake is riding the best and biggest wave of his career at the moment, and I couldn't be more happy.

Yessss! I agree SO MUCH. I think the exposure he's getting is so important, and I'm glad he's getting out to all these VIP events. Watching him network is great fun.

H.M. ~ I couldn't agree more with this! It's really wonderful to watch. He's worked hard and deserves this.

I feel so spoiled this week with Cannes, it's been such fun getting updates and news and photos everyday.

Exactly! He's doing all the smart things: taking his jury duty seriously by going to the morning screenings. Schmoozing with industry people in the evening at all the relevant parties (the ones where black tie is imperative and people don't really party). He attends some premiere galas, but not too many so he doesn't appear as a show-off.
All the while avoiding the obnoxious things, like thirst for attention (remember Redmayne lingering on the red carpet for 20 minutes?). Jake just shows up for a minute with smouldering eyes and a hint of a smile (making hearts race faster), then he's off to the respective screening or dinner. Sometimes he avoids the flashes completely, knowing full well that what matters happens inside the party, not on the red carpet.
Not much to fear for future campaigning: Jake knows how to avert an "attention thirst" accusation by playing it charmingly low-key.

As for Southpaw, I think Weinstein will support mainly, if not exclusively, Jake's performance (he will have bigger horses to bet on for best actress, picture, direction). The outcome? No one knows it, but I noticed people tend to weight someone's chances based on how much they want or don't want it to happen.
With Demolition likely having the world premiere at TIFF and possibly the US one in Nov-Dec, Fox Searchlight could snatch Harvey's wig with Jake's performance in their movie! :-)

Some funny tidbits:

Lovely Alicia Malone:

The Cannes 2015 Diaries: Day Three
‘The Lobster’ was the first competition film playing for the day, which means… the jury was there. Including future husband Jake Gyllenhaal. I had spotted his hair first, in all it’s slicked back long glory, then the smile. And then I hid so he wouldn’t see me staring.

Hilarious series of pics:
