Thin deep

Variety has a new interview with Jake Gyllenhaal, who talks about getting into character for Nightcrawler.

Gyllenhaal has returned to his roots with his latest roles, even if it means taking smaller paychecks. “I don’t have my own family right now,” he says. "I have an opportunity to make those choices." Nick Meyer, CEO of Sierra/Affinity, which sold “Nightcrawler” to international distributors, says Gyllenhaal’s star status is the reason the project got made. "He’s a significant artist with weight, and he took his role on this movie seriously," Meyer says.

The story touches on the idea of privacy in an Internet age — and the proliferation of tabloid journalism in even serious news organizations. But Gyllenhaal was most taken by the poetic soliloquies in the script (by Gilroy). He memorized every sentence of dialogue before the 28-day nocturnal shoot through the streets of Los Angeles. "I would always be sad when we wrapped a scene,” he says, “because I’d think, ‘That’s the last time I’m ever going to say the line, and it’s so good. It deserves to be said again.'"

"When you watch the film and see the angularity of his face, the hollow cheeks, the way that his eyes become prominent," Gilroy says, "it’s such a haunting look for a night shoot." Gyllenhaal would run 15 miles from his house to the set in the evenings to stay lanky. The inspiration for the fast-talking character came from the animal world. "There was a general sense that he was a coyote,” Gyllenhaal says. “I just wanted to live that way."

It’s somewhat ironic that the one scene in “Nightcrawler” that’s true to life features Gyllenhaal shattering his own image. Gilroy says he was taken by surprise that the star did that on set, but it’s become a crucial part of the story. “We didn’t plan on the mirror breaking,” he says. “It was honest. It was dramatic. It becomes a pivot point in the character.” Now Gilroy can’t imagine “Nightcrawler” without the scene. “It was an accident we put in the film because it worked so well,” he says. But he’s recently thought about how Gyllenhaal will always carry the character of Lou with him. “The movie has become a permanent part of his physical being,” Gilroy says.

Gyllenhaal admits that playing a dark character like Lou will sometimes sneak into his dreams. “I always have nightmares,” he says, before catching himself. “I don’t really believe in nightmares. I don’t believe the things that scare us are in our dreams. I think they are us communicating with ourselves. Even if I’m scared, I think they are helpful sometimes.” Gyllenhaal speaks abstractly at first when asked what drove him to more vulnerable roles. He says he had an epiphany when he turned 30. “You wake up and you say, ‘I know who I am. Why am I not able to communicate through my art?’ ” he says. “I just realized I was sitting in the wrong place.”

But he soon opens up about how his parents’ divorce in 2009 affected him. “My father got remarried, and my mother moved to New York,” says Gyllenhaal, who relocated to New York to be close to her. “My family became a different entity, and I think a more honest one.” He wanted to find the same honesty in the characters he played. “My family is so strong right now,” Gyllenhaal says. “In a way, that’s given me the strength to say trust yourself.”

This part reminds me of my 4-year-old nephew saying 'I'm a penguin, I'm not getting cold.' (He was in the 'penguin group' at kindergarten.) Anyway if it helps Jake to get into a role, I'm fine with that.
Jake hardly has time to prepare for "Demolition" though. He can't even absolve an internship at an investment bank. We'll see how that will turn out. ;-)

Nice video, HM. No idea why BAFTA decided to share it with us today, but I'm glad they did. His eyes really sine in that interview.

Maybe Jake will get some BAFTA love this year, though, of course, not getting my hopes up!

The Variety interview was a great surprise, especially the photos. Gearing up for TIFF craziness.

The NC promo train needs to get back in gear. They started out great, with the viral video. But they need to keep going.

Hope the miserable day gets better, BJ! And hi, Tweety - haven't seen you for a bit.

Variety's cover story is better than what all of us expected, I think. Great highlight for Jake. But yeah, Open Road needs to put some fire into Nightcrawler promotion.

So hard to keep hope to a minimum, isn't it? I wanna rejoice in Jake's success!

Here's what smells good at TIFF. The top 14 parties.

“Nightcrawler”
Friday, September 5, 6-8 p.m.
Soho House

Jake Gyllenhaal goes from playing cops (“Prisoners,” “End of Watch”) to the “scuzzy” crime scene videographers that get there before the cops do. It's Jake, Rene Russo, Friday night, and Soho House. It's a roman candle to start the weekend before Open Road and Bold Films premiere it at the Elgin at 9 p.m.

Entertainment Weekly's Toronto Must List Party
Saturday, September 6, 4-6 p.m.
Thompson Hotel

Moving over from last year's event at the Windsor Arms, EW is on a hot streak after mega bashes at Comic-Con and Emmy weekend in L.A. Both saw senior figures in the industry angling for access.

The 2014 “Must List” is actually a redacted version of the event's original name: “The Must Get Familiar With Now For Awards Season List”.

Honorees include Steve Carell, JK Simmons, Bennett Miller, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eddie Redmayne, “Whiplash” director Damien Chazelle and the cast of “This is Where I Leave You”.

Could a EW story be in the making, giving that Jake will attend this Must List Party?

UltraViolet said...

This is cool. From Vulture's TIFF preview:

Nightcrawler
Jake Gyllenhaal lost 30 pounds to play a sleazy crime-scene paparazzo in this dark dramedy from first-time director Dan Gilroy. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about it yet, but screw it: I love this nasty little movie! It's fucking bonkers, and I can't wait for you to see it.

UltraViolet said...

Thanks for the party scoop! I don't think EW has done anything in depth on Jake in years. Would be nice.

And this was on FB

Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts will star in the romance for Jean-Marc Vallée, who jets in to Toronto for the North American premiere of Wild. Sierra/Affinity will kick off pre-sales in Toronto and CAA represents US rights.

Black Label Media, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment (SKE) and Mr. Mudd produced Demolition, based on Bryan Sipe’s Black List screenplay about a young investment banker wrestling with the aftermath of his wife’s death who meets a woman that changes his life.

Principal photography is set to begin in New York on September 15 in New York City.

Sierra/Affinity also handles sales on Toronto world premiere selection Nightcrawler that stars Gyllenhaal.

Jess said...

The only thing about Demolition is that the premise sounds a lot like Southpaw without the child.

BlueJean said...

"The only thing about Demolition is that the premise sounds a lot like Southpaw without the child."

That's what I was thinking as well, Jess. I thought it was just me.

Jess said...

Maybe Demo is more about romance after the wife's death while Southpaw seems more about father-daughter relationship.

I have to remember that Jake has been making incredible character choices lately. So I would think that he saw something different in Demolition. At least he has the sorrow part down, no preparation needed.

And he looked so delicious in NYC from the IHJ pictures. Jealous of TIFF attendees and New Yorkers.

Monica said...

When I read the script of Nightcrawler for the first time, the beginning of the script was very similar to End of Watch with filming things. I was worried, but throughout the reading I realized how different it was.

After reading that review, Demolition will surely be different from Southpaw.

FP said...

If you think about it the plot of source code is the same PoP, go back in time to relive the same moment in order to change the course of story, but the two films could not be more different.1124

Jess said...

That was a brilliant catch FP.

POP and Source Code.

FP said...

thanks Jess! LOL :)

Jess said...

Oh my, this really hurts. I just recently look at Joan and Jake on the Graham Norton show via Youtube a few days ago. I always do when I need to laugh. She was so funny and it was such a good show with all the J's. I thought she was doing better, rest in peace Joan Rivers.

Both Joan and Robin now gone, pure comedy has really been lost here on earth.

Hot Mess said...

See, I've read the same script review as Monica (she gracefully gave us the link a while ago). I know you all hate spoilers but a point needs to be made: right from the beginning, Demolition is the opposite of Southpaw. The 2 characters' reaction to losing their respective wives is completely different.

-
-
-

one tiny spoiler:

The starting point of the story is that, right after his wife dies, he doesn't feel sorrow, he feels disconnected. What follows is triggered by this sentiment.

-
-
-

Demolition seems to be a dark dramedy and quirky romance with shades of American Beauty, whereas Southpaw looks like a gritty drama, a riches-to-rags-to-newfound-respect story where Rocky and The Wrestler meets Kramer vs. Kramer.

THR's Oscar pundit Scott Feinberg is "enthralled":

http://scottfeinberg.com/tiff-14-my-top-ten-list

TIFF 2014: My Top Ten List

Based on plot summaries, entertaining trailers and actors I admire, I’ve managed to pick 10 films I am hoping to catch once they are publicly released.

Gyllenhaal channels the epitome of crazy for his portrayal of a corrupt drifter-turned-freelance reporter who is enthralled with the world of crime reporting and will do just about anything to get the story on tape. Though the trailer skeeved me out, I was enthralled by Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of this character in just a few minutes, so I can’t imagine what he’s capable of throughout the entire film.

Vanity Fair's Mike Hogan is intrigued:

http://www.vanityfair.com/vf-hollywood/2014/09/toronto-film-festival-preview?mbid=social_twitter

There is something about Jake Gyllenhaal’s hair in the trailer for Nightcrawler that makes him look desperate and crazy. It’s there in his eyes, too, obviously, but for some reason it’s the hair that stands out to me. Gyllenhaal stars as a guy so anxious to count for something that he becomes a true-crime paparazzo, ultimately straying beyond what’s legal in a frantic search for images that will bleed enough to lead. Far-fetched? Probably. But it sounds like the kind of ride I want to go along for—plus, I have got to find out the deal with that do. –M.H.

Simmons, Carell, Gyllenhaal stand out in Toronto entries

Nocturnal underbelly

Jake Gyllenhaal has always been a well-regarded actor but he’s especially compelling in writer-director Dan Gilroy’s “Nightcrawler,” a thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of Los Angeles’ freelance crime journalism.

Jake, who lost 30 pounds for the role, is gaunt, eyes burning with hunger, ambition and crazed determination, as Lou Bloom, a man desperate for work. Lou eventually discovers the sleazy world of LA crime journalism.

Jake keeps us glued to the screen with his sleazeball “nightcrawler,” who develops a relationship with a veteran will-stop-at-nothing-to-get-high-ratings TV news exec, played by Rene Russo.

Yes awards would be nice but Oscar no longer cares about great performances. I am hoping the non Oscar awards give Nightcrawler some love and if not who cares. Like one of the critics mentioned before sounds as if Jake keeps taking it to the next level in this one. His films will be around a long time and this one sounds as if it will be added to his already impressive list of iconic roles.

Donnie Darko is loved and coveted by a new generation of fans. October Sky is watched by students in class. I could go on but I do believe NC will also be a classic but I don't think its like Drive except the location.

Hi guys. I am indeed in Toronto. Really lucky to get to see Jake at TIFF for the second year in a row. I couldn't really post until right now. Managed to avoid the rain before the movie but not after!

Nightcrawler is intense and weird and unlike anything we've seen Jake do. I hadn't read the screenplay so was unprepared for all of what happens.

The audience totally ate it up, breaking into applause at one point during the film. Lots of applause in the credits and at the Q&A.

Before the movie, Dan Gilroy introduced Jake as one of the most fearless actors working today. Jake looked really good and seemed very happy. Rene Russo looked great - incredible legs. She also seemed to like touching Jake :)
