Spring Awakening

We are apparently on a quarterly posting schedule here at GB! News about a Leonard Bernstein movie biography, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, indicated it is time for a new post, mixing some recent photos among the latest news.

Bernstein lived a fascinating life, and I look forward to seeing Jake and CJF interpret it. This Bernstein bio tops a very long slate of projects to which Jake is attached:

There are a couple on there that could drop off and I'd be fine. But if he does them all, he'll be busy for years.

Jake has been in Los Angeles filming Dan Gilroy's latest film. That seems to have wrapped, going by IG photos. Next we wait to see if Jake goes to Cannes for the screening of Wildlife on May 9.

Almost forgot Jake's Cartier appearances.

The short video ad:

And a brief interview:

I don't want to brag or anything, but I do believe I had the Bernstein scoop last year, after the 92nd Street Y conversation. Of course, I didn't know it was going to be with Fukunaga. The moderator mentioned Scorsese, who apparently was working on a similar project at some point. And Spielberg also has a Bernstein movie in the works. I hope Jake's is made ahead - and above - any others.

As always when I go weeks and weeks between posts, I have a bunch of random tidbits saved up. Here goes:

Thank you for the new post, UV!

I have also heard about the Leonard Bernstein project last year, I was waiting for news on that and hoping Jake would be playing the lead role. I thought he´d be perfect for it. And Fukunaga directing it... oh I just can´t wait to see it!

Jake has got so many projects on his list, I am torn between being glad there is no play/musical on it (yet?) and being disappointed about it. I SO want to see him on stage again but the travelling would be a problem! Can´t someone just lock him up in a nice theatre in the West End in London next time he´s there? LOL

Hope you´re all doing fine - spring is finally here! I am so happy about all the colors, the smells, birds chirping etc. Seems like some cities give spring a miss though and jump straight to summer, at least when I look at the temperatures!

Yay! A new post! Thanks UV! A loooooooot of new projects coming up... I'd love to hear about a new project with Denis Villeneuve. Soon! It's been too long already (re-watched 'Enemy' for the millionth time yesterday evening and I still enjoyed it!) :)

Thanks for the new post, UV :)

Hoping that if Jake doesn't go to Cannes, he'll be at the MET Gala. The man wears a tux well!

Diana, I've got a feeling that one day, sooner than we think, you'll see Jake on stage in the Wet End. Singing. LOL!

Diana said...

bobbyanna, I don´t know if I ever mentioned it here but when I was in New York and talked to one of the cast members he said there were serious talks about actually taking SITPWG to London! I have no idea what happened then, whether it´s on the back of someone´s mind still or they gave up on that idea....

I won´t give up hope that Jake will do a musical in the West End. Maybe it won´t be SITPWG, but I´d be happy to see him playing a different role, too!

Which role would you like to see him in? I don´t know many musicals (few songs and the household names and some storylines), I´ve just recently bought two cast recording albums and am constantly stocking up. I only wish I had easier access to theaters, for most musicals I have to drive hours and spend the night because there is nothing near me. Tarzan is the only one that I can go to that is just 100 km (and I will go).

I can´t wait to see Kinky Boots and Hamilton in London. Next week! I´m SO excited! I LOVE the Hamilton cast recording!

bobbyanna said...

Diana, I'm still hoping he takes SITPWG to London. There is so much involved with mounting a production, and scheduling, finding the right venue, etc. so I'm hoping it might still happen.

UltraViolet said...

I would love to see a London staging of SITPWG, Bobbyanna and Diana. I miss that show.

Don't know if this is accurate, bit according to Indiewire:

Carey Mulligan, who’s building some Oscar buzz for Paul Dano’s Directors’ Fortnight title “Wildife” (IFC) after its strong Sundance debut, will go to Cannes, but not her costar Jake Gyllenhaal, who is prepping his Leonard Bernstein biopic.

The Deadline article mentioned autumn as the start date. 3-4 months from now. Jake and Cary have to move fast because... surprise, surprise... Bradley Cooper is slated to star in and direct a Leonard Bernstein biopic 😬 Amongst the producers, none others than Spielberg and Scorsese. Jake and Scorsese have been attached to it for a long time, Spielberg held a table reading... but Cooper is new to this and, boom, everything falls into place for him.

So yeah, Jake has to move faster than the speed of light to get his movie made as soon as possible. It has to be the first one out of the gate to have an honest chance in this goddamnbitch of a situation.

It's all clear now why he didn't go to Cannes: he's literally fighting for his Berstein movie in an industry that is cutthroat perversly competitive.

In recent years I've been thinking that maybe Jake has some enemies in Hollywood. Professional enemies, not personal ones. People who don't want to see him succeed. I chased away the thought because it sounded too much like those pathetic conspiracy theories. But it's the only thing that makes sense. The absurd Oscar snubs - AMPAS isn't an evil entity, the Eye of Sauron; nominations are decided by his peers, actors who, like Jake himself, are members of the Academy. And now this: 3rd time that Jake has a promising project in development, another influencial player (always a client of CAA) starts a rivaling project. Right on cue.

End of rant. I'm keeping all my fingers crossed that this time life will imitate legend, and David does beat the freakin' Goliath.

BlueJean said...

"goddamnbitch of a situation."

LOL. Other than that: talk about bad timing / bad luck. Again.

Anonymous said...

To throw gossip into the mix: Reese Witherspoon's husband is a big wig at CAA. Weren't there questions about the speed of her getting together with him so shortly after her split with Jake? And then Jake left CAA after 15 years the year they got married.

Who knows. I think a lot of it all has to do with luck.

I don't follow anyone else's career as I do Jake's, so this may be common for other actors. We just notice the slights more because we're fans.

I just...Bradley Cooper? He's so blah!

Anonymous said...

Bradley Cooper has no musical inclination and is the most wooden actor to play a colorful character like Lenny Bernstein but he IS one of Leo DiCaprio's yacht party buddies. Leo being Scorsese's favorite.
Bradley ➡ Leo ➡ Scorsese ➡ Bernstein movie, easy to connect the dots. The ol Hollyweird way. As far as bad luck goes, once is a coincidence, twice is bad timing, three times smells like sabotage, feud, bad blood whatever. One fact is clear, RDJ, Gwyneth, McConaughey, Jake's former good friends who happened to be clients of Reese's husband aren't his friends anymore since he left CAA. I'm rooting for Jake more than ever to make the best movie and stick it to Hollyweird Frathouse.

Anonymous said...

Bradley having more useful "friends" or better playing Hollywood game is not sabotage, feud nor bad blood.
He works for himself, just like Jake or any other actor.

Anonymous said...

This is no doubt a feud and it's acknowledged and presented as such by the press:

Indiewire - Move over, Jake Gyllenhaal. Bradley Cooper is now set to direct and star in his own LB biopic

Vulture - Bradley Cooper Has Entered the Battle of the LB Biopics

Collider - Bradley Cooper Sets His Own LB Movie to Duel the Gyllenhaal/Fukunaga Joint: "Either Cooper’s project falls away when The American moves quickly, Cooper sticks with it and we have two Bernstein movies, or Fukunaga’s film falls apart and Cooper moves forward with his take. What a weird thing."

Cooper announcing his big movie 9 days after Jake's announcement (made in the context of Cannes market) and, more telling, 1 day before Jake's movie starts selling distribution rights in Cannes, is the textbook definition of a feud, intimidation tactics, intention to sabotage a rival. They want Jake's movie to fall apart.

It's like that bully from highschool teaming up with 2 big jocks, intimidating the little kid, the underdog, to chase him away from their playard. Jake may be the underdog but he's feisty, passionate and he's not running away.

There's only one upside to this mess: normally a Bernstein biopic wouldn't attract many viewers outside the world of classical music or Broadway lovers - this rivalry will create buzz that will surround both productions. Already the articles and tweets about the dueling movies have people in the comments section saying that Cooper's will be more awards friendly but Jake and Cary's will be better, edgier , and they'd rather see Jake's movie. Jason Adams' poll on his website has Jake winning by a landslide. Now, internet polls and comments mean nothing but they mirror a feeling that's universal: people love to root for the underdog.

Now if only Amy Adams will join Jake's movie taking on the part of Bernstein's wife, Felicia...

Anonymous said...

That's like saying that big studios making expensive movies is a feud because others can spend less.
Industry professionals (Cannes) don't need Cooper to find out that Scorsese and Spielberg support similar project, even general public knew about that.

UltraViolet said...

I don't think feud is the right word. But I do think Cooper benefits from his association with bigger players in the industry. Not sure why Jake hasn't/can't/won't forge similar relationships. It is a pity in this case. I was looking forward to this project, though unsure of how it would play out. Now we have, as so often, the added worry of how a competing work will affect things.

I'm curious how this played out - whether Jake talked to Spielberg or Scorsese or if they have always been separate projects.

Hagen said...

If Spielberg or Scorsese directed the other movie, I'd be worried. But Fukunaga is more experienced than Cooper, so I'm confident that Jake has joined the better project.

Unknown said...

Not sure why Jake hasn't/can't/won't forge similar relationships.
I already asked myself that question. Must have something we don't know because I thought that in the BBM era, it seemed like he was making a big circle of friends in Hollywood.

bobbyanna said...

I agree, UV, Monica. The only thing I can think of is that he didn't do effective networking when he was with CAA. It seems as if everything that didn't happen, happened during the period at CAA. Now he's with WME and I love the work he's doing and how busy he is, but there still seem to be these impediments. Right now, It seems like this would be a good time for all the heavyweights at WME who re supposd to represent Jake, to step up and do their job. Jake is notstanding out here by himself making unilateral decisions. Hopefully, Patrick Whitesell and Ari Emanuel are involved. My goodness, I thought agent used to help out with finding fianancing. I'm baffled. Scorcese and Spielberg are heavy artillery, indeed.

Monica said...

Bob, WME is great, but Jake has no box office hits, that hurts him. He is a great actor, but he also doesn't know how to sell himself. Sometimes he comes out as a guy who takes himself too seriously. Most of the films he starred in are dramas. He doesn't do action movies, comedies, even those silly musicals. Finding a balance between making these movies and what he loves would be good. Pick up a supporting role or villain role, relax a bit.
He needs hits and also get closer to the fans.

UltraViolet said...

I disagree with almost all of that except the box office part. A box office hit would help Jake out. And a comedy wouldn't hurt. But there's an intangible element missing for Jake and I don't think Instagram will fix it. You can tell from his attempts at Facebook that it doesn't come naturally to Jake.

I think his people need to work more on his part and Jake needs to find a movie that will score with the public. Harder than it sounds, sadly.

BlueJean said...

"Pick up a supporting role or villain role, relax a bit."

He did that with 'Okja' and everybody freaked out because it wasn't the kind of part most people liked to see him in - myself included, I have to say.

I honestly wouldn't know what he'd have to change about his career. And, as much as a great actor he is, he can't "act" that he's interested in playing the social media game - or any other game in the industry. That's something he'll always struggle with, I guess. Like you say, UV, it's an intangible thing.

But strangely, for me, it does make Jake more human and not just the "star actor" who is "up there" all the time and who seems larger than life. He's a man with insecurities, doubts, and faults like all of us. And I like how he's not advertising his private life on the internet. It might be better for him to promote himself more directly professionally, but it's just not in him. So be it. Let be, let be ;)

bobbyanna said...

I agree with Monica on this. He needs to relax a bit an reconsider action movies and comedies.
I'd love to see Jake in a villain role. As for connecting with his fans, there are so many ways to do that!

I don't know too many people who buy Cartier watches...OK...I knew one...: ) But the other day I walked through Macy's men's department and passed the cologne department: Armani - huge gorgeous photos of Chris Pine smiled at me... a few feet further on, Dior Sauvage ...dramatic photos of Johnny Depp...not smiling....

I guess this is my feeble way of saying seeming accessible to fans is important. As I walked through the women's department there were some beautiful, poster-sized photographs of Natalie Portman for Dior. My point is that this was high end stuff, it wasn't 3rd rate, but it was also accessible to fans.

I agree Jake does not do Facebook or Instagram well. But he could compensate for this with product endorsement deals that are classy and yet accessible so that he becomes more of a familiar face.

George Clooney is on TV advertising now he does it in a comedic fashion. Ryan Reynolds has resurrected his career with a lighter image. There are ways to do this. Jake needs to buy in to the idea. If he doesn't want to deal with social media, like Facebook or instagram, then he needs to do more of the Calvin Klein type stuff he did earlier.

Personally, I believe Bradley Cooper doing Bernstein makes no sense especially come off his recent A Star is Born turn with GaGa.

Monica said...

Blue Jean, Okja is not the kind of movie I'm talking about because it's still something of an art. I say something more fun, like Cate Blanchett in Thor, wich she was wonderful. Something that will increase his audience, give a hit, without having to look deep.

As for connecting with his fans, there are so many ways to do that!
Bingo!

Ryan Reynolds has resurrected his career with a lighter image.
This. For a long time he was reserved. His Twitter is more fun than anything else. There are many ways to deal with this without opening the personal life.

UltraViolet said...

Jake is not Ryan Reynolds. i think it would be madness for him to try to be like that.

I agree that it would be great to see Jake in a variety of roles. But I don't think any of it will matter if there isn't a hit among them.

Bobbyanna, you are never satisfied! ;) You wanted Jake to do ads; he's doing them. But they aren't the right kind? Calvin Klein is certainly accessible.

I agree with all of this. There's a reason why I'm a huge fan of Jake's and not a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds. Sure he's funny on twitter and he has Deadpool but other than that, his other movies aren't doing so well.

Yes it'd be nice for Jake to have bigger success at the box office but he shouldn't have to do that by changing who he is and as fans we shouldn't be trying to change who he is or what he wants in his career.

Also have you seen some stuff fans tweet? I can understand why he stays away from social media. Some people have no filter there and go too far with what they say. I'm sure he doesn't want to see that all the time.

And Cate Blanchett isn't a great example she has zero social media presence.

Monica said...

He doesn't need to read what is said in instagram or twitter, but he could use sm to promote his work. If he has an exclusive photo of the new movie, instead of sending it to the Deadline, he could post it on his page.
He is currently filming, could post a picture of the set to keep fans looking forward to a new job.
I don't want him to be like Ryan Reynolds (jake is talented), but he could make use of the internet in his favor, there are many, many, many positive ways to do that. That would be a way to get closer to the fans, he doesn't need to interact.
He has almost 2 million followers on facebook, this is a lot for someone who doesn't use social media, how cannot take advantage of this?

bobbyanna said...

Good lord all I meant was that Ryan was able to turn himself around and redefine himself. I don't want Jake to be or do exactly what RR did. Anyone who's familiar with my posting history knows I'm not a huge fan of Ryan. He has grown on me a bit, but uh,uh. I think Jake needs to broaden his appeal so that his movies make some money. He comes across as very serious, and often too introspective. And he part of the reason he doesn't connect or build up a fan base is because in between projects he is almost invisible. it's upsetting to see him turn in such an incredible performance in Stronger and have the movie do so poorly. it was a brilliant piece of film making, as was Nightcrawler.

Yes, UV, Calvin Klein is more accessible than Cartier watches. : )
In general, I'm glad Jake is starting to get serious about the potential of commerials.
(Even Benecio Del Toro finally started doing them. His beer commercials are hilarious, too.)

Can I say I loved the Jake / Ryan bromance during the promo for 'Life'? They were hilarious together. Other than that, I don't know anything about Ryan or Ryan's career, so I can't / won't comment on that.

Anonymous said...

I sometimes think there's a sense of melancholy in Jake; he seems much more pensive in recent years. That may be age, or perhaps he's battling something behind closed doors, and if true, I hope it's not holding him back.

Personally, I don't think he has anything to worry about career-wise. He's known for his talent and is well liked by many. It's just harder bringing out movies these days that aren't Marvel/DC. There's a lot competing for our attention.

I assume Jake and Cary knew they weren't getting the rights, but it sounds like the Bernstein family is all in on the other version.

As for Jake's being too serious for fans, I just don't agree. His roles, perhaps. But most people know him from talk show appearances, not ponderous magazine articles. I think he's okay there.

I have been in London for a few days so I could only read a few things. I hope Jake´s project will get made, but with all the backing of the Bernstein family for Bradley´s project I´m not too sure how good it would be received.

Josh Singer, Scorsese and Spielberg are very serious competition... just the fact they are attached to Bradley´s movie will make things difficult anyway when it comes to audience´s response. We´ll see....

I agree 100%. SM has become a massive marketing tool and should be used as such. It´s way too common now and not doing it makes marketing way harder than it has to be. At least that´s how I see it.

There are many accounts that say "this is the official account of XX, postings by XX are marked with *initials*". This way Jake can chose to post himself - or not. Either way, the information is out, and in a very easy and quick way. Not to forget that he/his team would have 100% control over the posting itself (choice of words, timing etc.)

Anonymous said...

... not too sure how good it would be received

Another project can't change Jake's movie or how well it will be received.
It's reasonable to presume that general public will be less interested in watching another movie on the same subject, but audience won't love it more or less because there are more movies about Bernstein.

Diana said...

That, and the people attached to it. Spielberg and Scorsese for example are names that even people not THAT much into the whole movie-showbiz-frenzy know.

It´s going to be a tough race. I think whichever movie comes out first should have better chances to get seen. Just a gut feeling.

Wildlife still

When i get some time, I'll post the Cannes Wildlife reactions. Lots of praise for the movie and Jake.

For the Bernstein movies, it probably is imperative for Jake's movie to be first. But then you get into date release issues. I think Stronger was hurt because it was released in September. So Jake has to come out earlier but not too early.

The whole thing is irritating!

Anonymous said...

Jake and Cary should find another subject to tackle instead of Bernstein. Sondheim maybe? I'm sure Jake would get his blessing/rights to a film.

bobbyanna said...

I'm just baffled by the people who represent Jake. As I think about it, Jake was doing Southpaw when the buz was all about Creed and Stallone. Jake was doing Stronger after Mark Wahlberg announced the Patriot's Day movie. I may have the timing wrong. Jake' projects may have been announced first, but whatever. The point is where are the WME people who are supposed to be working on this with him?

I agree, UV, very irritating.

Hagen said...

Theres a very interesting article on the two dueling projects ("The Hollywood Reporter"): Dueling Bernstein Biopics: How Bradley Cooper Took the Baton from Jake Gyllenhaal
...
Bernstein isn't expected to start shooting until fall 2019. Cooper intends to do further work on the script in conjunction with Singer and the producers.

The American may have lost out on the music rights, but it isn't waving the flag of defeat. And, if all goes as planned, Fukunaga and Gyllenhaal's film will hit the big screen first, or in 2019.

Insiders close to Gyllenhaal and Bron say they fully intend to proceed, despite not being able to use any music from West Side Story. They note that Bernstein was just as famous for being a conductor, and that much of the music he conducted is in the public domain. (However, they likely can't use any his orchestral recordings.) The indie film will be financed by a combination of sources, including foreign presales. Sierra/Affinity is currently shopping the project to international distributors at the Cannes film market, where it is receiving keen interest.

The American is a passion project for Gyllenhaal, who developed the film with his partner, Riva Marker, at their New York-based production company, Nine Stories. When the Paramount film seemed to be off the table, the music rights were suddenly free again.
...
Michael Mitnick's screenplay for The American is based on Humphrey Burton's definitive biography, Leonard Bernstein. The film will a paint an intimate portrait of the man behind the music, including Bernstein's homosexuality.

I think at this point it would probably be better for Jake to leave the project. A Bernstein biopic without his music - is he for real?

UltraViolet said...

Sigh. That headline is maddening.

I don't know how they can do it without using any of the music from West Side Story or his other works. Maybe they can come up with something ingenious. Who knows?

Here is Jake last night hard at work composing some new music for the film ;)

So back in NYC, it seems. Someone from Brooklyn tweeted this yesterday:

Jake Gyllenhaal is at a coffee shop a block away so 7 ppl from the office just scooted over to stalk him

And another tweet:

today i officially became a new yorker. today i shared the sidewalk with jake gyllenhaal. i laughed, i cried, i stared. that’s all. thank you.

BlueJean said...

"The American is a passion project for Gyllenhaal"

So was 'Stronger', I believe. As much as I love Jake and his passion for his craft, I hope he'll give up on 'The American'. The project seems doomed already if he can't use any music - let alone he'll be competing (again) with another movie on the same subject. I don't know, it doesn't feel good to me at this point.

Anonymous said...

Nowhere in THR piece does it say they can't use ANY music. They unfortunately don't have the rights for Bernstein's music, what he composed. But Bernstein was the most prolific conductor and much of the music he conducted is in the public domain.

He can't use West Side Story or Candice music but he can show Bernstein conducting without rehearsal the New York Philharmonic with Wagner, Schumann and Strauss music.
Or the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall where he was presented by Eleanor Roosevelt.
Or conducting Maria Callas in Medea at La Scala di Milano.
Or conducting the London Symphonic Orchestra with Mahler's symphonies at Royal Albert Hall.
Or conducting Shostakovich's 5th Symphony in the presence of the composer.
Or conducting JFK's pre-inaugural gala and kissing Jackie Kennedy on the cheek, a much talked about break in protocol.
There's so much to show even without the music he composed.

Chica said...

Damn. I was so excited when I heard about this project. He is restricted from fully using the music and that is a strike against the movie.

bobbyanna said...

THis is just too discouraging! Damn. Leonard Bernstein was an unconventional conductor and an arranger. He did a lot with the NY Philharmonic, the Young People's concerts, etc. and really popularized classical music. He was a cultural icon. But he was also a significant modern American composer. To be denied the chance to include West Side Story and the entire backstory of how it all came together, or Candide, is like completely hollowing out his story and IMO I just don't see how you can do an authentic, honest job with that limitation imposed on you. Without his music this isn't much of a biopic, because I've ready his biographies and Bernstein without his music isn't Bernstein. If I were Jake I'd drop it. I don't think Riva Marker is being very helpful.

Anonymous said...

What do you mean Riva Marker isn't being very helpful?

anyone else find some of these fan accounts creepy? How are they getting this information? No wonder Jake tries to keep everything so private

BlueJean said...

"What do you mean Riva Marker isn't being very helpful?"

I wondered about that too. Do you think Riva could be more influential, Bobbyanna? She must have her own connections in the movie industry, no doubt - and could / should help Jake benefit from her own network. Is that what you mean?

bobbyanna said...

It just seems like the Bradley Cooper group has elbowed them out of the way, and at some point I think they should cut their losses and move on to another project. Carey Fukunaga and Jake are good friends so I'm sure they will work together again. So I guess I'm hoping Riva will convince them to put it on a shelf for the time being. O

Of course, now I'll take the opposite point of view, LOL!! Maybe Riva and Jake are thinking that from a business point of view maybe they will benefit from the publicity the other project is generating, and if they come out of the gate first, they may be able to make some money. It's possible Jake's project will be gritty and personal and reflective. It may not have the sweep of the Bradley Cooper/Spielberg project, but it could be a more definitive portrait.

I still believe that being deprived of his compositions and his arrangements is a major setback.

One thing I would strongly urge everyone to do: If you get a chance go on You Tube and check out Leonard Bernstein. Watch his interviews and watch him conduct. Listen to his music. Watch him perform at the piano. He was a force of nature.

bobbyanna said...

I will also add that I know Riva is Jake's producing partner but I'm not clear about her role. Does she help him secure financing? Does she secure the rights to various properties? Does she bring him projects to do? Is there an overlap between Riva's role and the role of Jake's agency, WME? Does she negotiate the distribution or help strategize how a project will be marketed?

BlueJean said...

"It just seems like the Bradley Cooper group has elbowed them out of the way, and at some point I think they should cut their losses and move on to another project."

That's exactly what I thought as well.

"Riva is Jake's producing partner but I'm not clear about her role."

Me neither. It's clear Jake needed a producing partner, but he started Nine Stories to "find material I can do as an actor" (as stated in an interview). I thought that was a bit odd. Isn't that was his management should do? Aren't they getting him the material he wants to do - or does he simply want a bigger say in what he chooses to do? Or are they're so few people in Hollywood who want to work with Jake it forced him to start his own company? ;) ;)

TOM Holland had better watch out for Jake Gyllenhaal.

I can reveal the A-list actor will star as Spider-Man villain Mysterio – although he is disguised as a good guy in the upcoming movie.

However Jake wasn’t the first choice. Bosses wanted Ryan Gosling but he turned down the role.

A film insider said: “Producers were keen to sign Ryan but he was busy filming with another project. Jake is a suitable alternative with experience of playing villainous characters.

“He was even rumoured to play Spider-Man and Batman at one point.”

Jake said previously: “I was open to both the roles. However, at a certain point you realise there is someone more interesting, talented and ready to do the role.”

Jake will fly in to London to film Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 next month.

Now Tom will know why his Spidey-sense is already tingling.

Blue Jean, a lot of actors start their own production companies. Usually to have more control of their work, deciding on a director, and raise the money and articulate their own vision, etc. A producer has real ownership in a project in a way an actor doesn't.

I once read an article about filmmakers, and I recall reading that an actor who insists on having too much input, who is always challenging a director, can be a huge pain in the "neck" but an actor who is also the producer can do some of the same things and will be celebrated as a great producer. : )

I have no idea if that applies to Jake at all, but I think Jake has often expressed a desire for more control, and his interviews indicate he has a real interest and is very knowledgeable about the process of making movies. I can't wait to see him direct a movie. I think he will do a great job.

he is now a full fledged member of the Producers Guild and that is great company to be in. Jake has a seat at a very important table.

How nice to make sure and mention that "Jake wasn't their first choice"

Hagen said...

Variety has picked up the news about Jake's possible role in the Spider-Man sequel: Jake Gyllenhaal Eyed for Villain Role in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Sequel

Jake playing a villain in a Spider-Man movie would be fine with me. He wouldn't be stuck in a franchise.

Monica said...

That's great news. SpiderMan was a success, made almost a billion. This is coming soon after Avengers 4, people love Spider. Jake will be on a hit, will get the attention he deserves, will not have a long contract, and will be in one of the most anticipated films of the year.
The character is already on trending topics !!

UltraViolet said...

My first thought was that at least Jake wouldn't have to be in a whole series of these things. I still find it disappointing that he's doing one at all, and one in which he's not even the main draw. It seems weird to me to go from a potential Batman to a villain most people have never heard of. But if it inexplicably helps his career, great. And who doesn't want a nice paycheck?

I was also really irritated by the Gosling mention. It would be nice to hear about Jake getting a plum role without some kind of drag on it. Actually, it would just be nice to hear of Jake getting a plum role.

UltraViolet said...

Also, the twitterverse seems generally happy about the news, which I guess is something.

bobbyanna said...

OK. so let me understand this. Jake is going to play a guy who turns to a life of crime because he is unhappy with the way he is treated in Hollywood? .....

I've always thought the villains were more interesting in these superhero franchises. And honestly, right now I don't think the timing is so good for the Batman franchise. I think it's stale. IMO the smart thing to do is rest the character for a couple of years and then re introduce him. Ben Affleck has aged himself out of the role, but I don't think anyone's told him. LOL!

BlueJean said...

I'm not into superheroes at all, whatever their name is - so I'll skop that one, I suppose. Sorry Jake :)

BlueJean said...

Damn typos! :) *skip*

UltraViolet said...

I'm glad he's not playing Batman. And villains are more interesting. I just wondered about the perception of going from The Man to a secondary role. But people seem happy about it. I don't know - I hope it just happens and is over quickly, lol. It will be nice for Jake to get a big box office hit to pad his box office score. I just don't want it to take up too much time.

UltraViolet said...

Jake is going to play a guy who turns to a life of crime because he is unhappy with the way he is treated in Hollywood?

LOL, Bobbyanna.

Anonymous said...

I just wondered about the perception of going from The Man to a secondary role.

I think it's a wise move and he can easily play it off that he didn't want to commit to Batman because it's such a huge part that might keep him from producing/acting in his other projects.

BlueJean said...

"I hope it just happens and is over quickly"

LOL. I agree.

UltraViolet said...

I understand all the practical reasons it's a good thing. I don't think it's a good thing for Jake's desirability as a leading man. It feels like a consolation prize. I hope he'll land a plum role and prove me wrong. But this feels like a part that Gosling, for example, would never have to take. And that makes me sad/angry/frustrated. A list of superhero villains is not exactly the A List.

bobbyanna said...

I think Jake will make this his own. He's a much stronger actor than the very likable kid who plays Spiderman.

UltraViolet said...

I don't have any doubt about that. Not my point. This does not feel like the choice of someone who can get whatever role he wants or is the top choice for directors. Not that it hasn't been clear. But it still frustrates me.

BlueJean said...

We're just never satisfied, are we? ;)

BlueJean said...

Maybe he just wants to have fun.

Anonymous said...

A lot of A list people have played villains, Jack Nicholson, Tom Hardy, Heath Ledger, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Pfeiffer, Michael Keaton, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, etc.

UltraViolet said...

I should have said Marvel villains. So that takes away at least five of the above. Tom Hiddleston isn't A-list. Here's a list of Marvel villains.

Most of that is a mysterio to me.

BJ, I hope that's why Jake is doing it. And it's something people have been whining that he doesn't do. So I hope it satisfies all of those folks.

UltraViolet said...

Anonymous BlueJean said...
We're just never satisfied, are we? ;)

LoL, BJ. I try to be supportive, and it irritates me when people constantly complain about Jake's choices. My irritation here is the idea that they offered it to Gosling first. It all feels like sloppy seconds. And I'm already beyond annoyed that it has overtaken twitter and instagram if you do a Jake search. I hope that will die down and I'll get over my snit :)

My irritation here is the idea that they offered it to Gosling first.

Why? Why would Jake need to be someone's first choice?

Hagen said...

The "Sisters Brothers" will be released in France on September 19th, 2018 (Allocine).

Hagen said...

Since Michael Keaton will return as The Vulture in the sequel to "Spider-Man: Homecoming" Jake wouldn't be the only villain in the film. Maybe the part of Mysterio won't be such a big deal anyway.

Just in case you wonder what Mysterio is doing: "[He] is piloting an enormous flying orb and is infecting the people of New York with hallucinogenic gas" (from Wikipedia).

Monica said...

Marvel doesn't follow the comics, so the origin and some characteristics of the character can change a lot.

I’ve been thinking about a comment someone made about Jake accounts, in particular the account mentioned was @jakeovereverything. The comment was something like no wonder why he’s so private because of fan accounts like this. They post candids and sightings, things like that.

At first I agreed but then I realized it’s not any different than what is on this site. We post tweets of people sighting Jake or photos and we do talk pretty in depth about his life and even if we think he’s not happy. I’ve actually seen things that they have posted and it’s posted here as well. Don’t get me wrong I love this blog but I just think people shouldn’t be so judgmental about that account and others like it. Honestly it’s not much different than here and that ig does try to promote his work by giving release dates and interviews and things like that. I’ve just been thinking about that and I want all Jake fans to be respectful of each other. :)

UltraViolet said...

There's a reason I ignored that comment, anon. I don't want to get into a discussion about other Jake sites. We do post similar things, though we don't allow extended conversations wondering about Jake's happiness levels or any other psychological analysis. We don't have any idea what is really going on and none of us is qualified to delve into it. Not to mention that it's none of our business.

Everyone except you pretty much ignored that comment. It's how we've always operated.

I'm happy you like this site, and I don't want to come down on you. But I'm not crazy about anon commenters coming in and making generalizations.

Glad to have you - it would be even better if you picked a name and posted under it so your comments would carry more weight.

UltraViolet said...

Forgot to respond t this, Bobbyanna:

Other people probably have different words, but thanks :)

I didn’t know there were rules or things that are known you just ignore. How do I make a name? I will make one. I don’t get to come online often and I just now caught up on all the comments and wanted to speak to that one. I don’t think I’m generalizing every blogger but the things I mentioned are comments I read people discussing and I was addressing whoever that one person is. I have to say that telling me everyone but me ignored the comment makes me feel like there’s Jake fans and then there’s Real Jake fans and I’m not one of them. Sorry for commenting against the implied rules.

Monica said...

he’s so private because of fan accounts like this.
Jake is not private because of fan account, he is private because of the press that is bigger, because of what happened to Swift. He became more career-focused than gossip.
I don't think he sees problems with fansites, he doesn't see these sites, these sites promote his work. Sightings and paparazzi is meant to entertain fans. This is not hurting him.

UltraViolet said...

Anon, there is no such thing as a "real Jake fan" and I didn't imply that you are not one. My point is that if you read that comment, then you also could have seen that no one else responded to it. It's not a crime that you did! I'm just saying that we don't need to be told we are like that IG account because we know what we are here and what kinds of things we post about.

I don't know how long you've been lurking, but we have a history of anon commenters coming in to stir up trouble with posts like the one to which you referred. Please stay and join in the discussion.

You can register for a blogger name (like me and Monica, e.g.) but if you don't want to do that, you can do what posters like Bobbyanna, BJ and Hagen do. Pick a name for yourself and type it in the "Name/URL" box when posting. That way people get to know you.

Let's just move on from that and get back to Jake. There's certainly no shortage of news these days :)

Not to mention...sitting across the aisle from me was none other than Stephen Sondheim!!!!!! Behind him was Mandy Patinkin and down the row was Jake Gyllenhaal (two George’s from Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park...”). Needless to say, this theater nerd was geeking out hardcore!

Also, what did people think of the Wildlife trailer? I was excited to see it finally. Very curious to see this movie. I love Carey Mulligan, sand she looks great in it. I'm sure I'll be frustrated with Jake's screen time, but hey - he can't be in every scene in every movie :)

UltraViolet said...

And wow - a trailer for The Sister Brothers. Another one in which Jake doesn't speak. It looks gorgeous. As does he. Even Joaquin looks good!

BlueJean said...

"I'm sure I'll be frustrated with Jake's screen time"

LOL! Not to mention all the praise Carey will be getting (much like Amy Adams in 'Nocturnal Animals') and Jake will largely be ignored when it comes to awards attention and stuff... Well, never mind.

TSB: horses, hats, tents... I'm in! :) I forgot Riz Ahmed is in it too, it'll be fun to see him. It actually appeals to me more than 'Wildlife' does at the mo. It's a different kind of role for Jake and that's what I'm excited about. All these guys are great actors in their own right - and a good director. Can't wait for this.

Hi everyone! My mind is all over the place with everything that is going on in my life right now - and Jake isn´t helping *lol*

I really want to see both of the movies, but I am looking more forward to TSB! Wildlife is probably too much drama (literally) for me right now.... but I was impressed with the little I saw of Carey. I was hoping for that and I hope the whole performance is as intense as it seems to be.

Wildlife is on the German filmstarts website, but (of course) without a release date. The review is 3,5 out of 5. TSB is also on the website

Jake as Mysterio.... I have never been into comic books so I only know the very common characters. I love the Spidey movies (Marvel in general) and to have Jake in it would be really great!

He trained Hugh Jackman for Wolverine, Johansson and Sebastian Stan for Avengers, Reynolds for Deadpool, Blake Lively for that shark movie, David Harbour for Hellboy, Gosling for whatever. All Democrats and liberals. If woke activist Scarlett Johansson trained with this guy so can Jake. Nobody cares to talk politics between exhausting workouts and dietary plans.

More on topic Photo from LA trainer March 2018 + photo from NY trainer May 2018 = Jake is training for a big action movie, a.k.a. Spider-Man sequel (since The Division is at least one year if not more further down the line).

If only we'd have an edit button: links for Jake's training pics are switched. 1st is from NY yesterday, 2nd from LA two months ago. I was warning if anyone wants to follow the guy. I used to follow him until I saw that he follows Donald Trump and Trump Jr., and he likes Trump's posts. And he is also desperate for attention.

Thank you Monica, I appreciate the heads up. I think Trump is a monster. it isn't about people just having different political views. The Moth features Andy Fischer-Price, Scott Fischer's son, on his father's death continuing to haunt him on celluloid. Not much about Jake's portrayal though it compares favorably to the first movie depiction. (It's the second story in the episode.)

Another interview for Cartier.

What kind of directors really inspire you?

I did a movie last summer [The Sisters Brothers] with Jacques Audiard; he’s a pretty incredible character who is one my favorite living filmmakers. I never thought I’d ever have an opportunity to make a film with him, because I never thought he’d make an English-language film. For me, there’s something in his films about the merging of love and violence. But more than that, there’s a sense of the beyond. When you see A Prophet, or Dheepan, or The Beat My Heart Skipped, there are sequences that have an otherworldly quality—an acknowledgement that there’s something beyond what we see, not just in the storytelling but in the actual visuals. There are moments when time slows and interactions go beyond normal narrative. In A Prophet, for example, there’s an amazing scene where the character’s talking to the man he murdered, and the guy is smoking and the smoke is coming out of the stab wounds in his body. It’s those types of things that resonate pretty deeply.

Gyllenhaal: Yes, we are producing a number of theatre projects, we produced Sunday in the Park with George, which is the last show I did, and I’m going to be doing something in the winter again.

I made a promise to myself that for every three film projects, I would do a theatre project, and I’ve stayed pretty true to that promise.

Some creative math there, Jake :) Well, depending on when he made/remade that promise. I would love for for them to produce Sunday in London, but not in the winter. Can't wait to see what he means.

From Europe - The cookies notice pops up when I access GB from my phone, but not from my tablet. Hopefully it makes sense for you, UV.

Thankfully, the wait for the theater project announcement was short. (As it's his window of free time next year apparently - The Finest Kind will certainly be shot next year, same with Let It Fall Back, a.k.a. Rio, possibly The Division too.)

I understand the off-Broadway choice. No Broadway project could take 8 weeks only (even SITPWG was 10 weeks plus 3 prior weeks of rehearsals - such a short run that they chose to withdraw from Tony consideration ). But a monologue show at the Public Theatre may quench his thirst for theatre, being on stage, literally making art for the sake of art since it's non-profit.

Deadline:
New York Premiere
SEA WALL / A LIFE
Written by Simon Stephens and Nick Payne, respectively
Directed by Carrie Cracknell
Featuring Tom Sturridge and Jake Gyllenhaal, respectively
January 26 – March 24, 2019

Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge make their Public Theater debuts in an unforgettable and incredibly intimate evening of theater. Sturridge, in his third collaboration with Tony and Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens, performs SEA WALL, an astonishing monologue about love and the human need to know the unknowable. Gyllenhaal continues his artistic collaboration with Olivier Award-nominated playwright Nick Payne in A LIFE, a meditation on how we say goodbye to those we love most. Directed by Carrie Cracknell, this heart-filled exploration of the beauty of life and the meaning of love, SEA WALL / A LIFE is an evening of dramatic storytelling at its best.

Worth mentioning: both Jake and Tom are starring in Dan Gilroy's new movie.

Jake and Cary are going against this . I think Cary is the better director.

Anonymous said...

And Jake is the better actor, without a doubt.

In any case, they're not going against the pop-y remake of A Star is Born but against Cooper tackling classical music, which is way out of his league. Yes, he'll have a lot of help from his powerful friends - but according to THR, his movie will start production *next fall* 2019. By that time Jake and Cary's movie could be completed, edited, hopefully screened in a festival, ready to be released.

If all goes according to production plan for Jake and Cary, and the same goes for Cooper (whose hands will be tied in a relentless awards campaign until March 2019), then the hoopla was much ado about nothing - Jake's movie will be released in 2019, Cooper's in 2020.

Of course it wasn't about nothing. It was meant to intimidate the adversaries in the hopes they'll give up so that The Powers That Be could make the *only* Bernstein movie to sweep the Oscars. Jake's movie being ready a year before is a bothering nuisance: what if it's good? what if it ruins the Big Movie chances for the following year?

If you don’t know Cazzie has been in the news because she was dating SNL comedian Pete Davidson for a few years and they suddenly broke up sometime in May and now he is engaged to Ariana Grande. Came as a sudden surprise to her I think, Pete sounds a bit bad in the situation. She has a post of them up on her page from May 7th still with hearts and saying bff’s so I imagine she is still getting over it. He on the other hand has deleted all her photos from his ig! Unlike the anon at 09:43, I’m willing to put my name name on my comments. And I may read here, but I don’t comment because we all know that this is not my neighborhood. But darned if I’m going to let somebody (again, under the guise of anon, no less), try to rewrite history, even if it was a fake history.

That was not Matt Frost that Jake was supposed to have gone to Telluride with in December 2015. It was Peter Sarsgaard. And the fake msbccg was planting herself there as well.

The whole story was a farce anyway because Peter was in Paris at the time. Jake got caught in a lie.

I don't remember the details of the Colorado visit but I don't have to look it up to know that Jake didn't post or say anything about it himself. So he wasn't "caught" lying. And that is not an invitation to discuss allegedly planted/fake sightings.

Let's all move on - it was years ago and is not important or interesting.

Apologies, I meant nothing of it apart from the woman in the photos, along with director, are friends of Jake's and have been for a while.

Edna - the whole Ariana Grande/Pete Davidson stuff is wild! Cazzie seems to be handling it respectfully.

UltraViolet said...

There is no reason to apologize! I was referring to the anon who keeps posting insults.

This is a friendly, Jake-friendly place :)

Anonymous said...

lol, I've been missing the insults! Thanks for deleting them :)

it is indeed. I like coming here.

Edna said...

The Cazzie/Pete/Ariana thing is nuts! But Jake has known her for a good bit of time just like he has known Jerry Seinfeld’s daughter for a long time too. There is a whole celeb community that lives on or near Martha’s Vineyard and Jake has spent a lot of time there growing up, guess it’s a small world!

I think reports have said that Cazzie was ok after the breakup but if I were with a man for years and if within a month he goes from you to having this very public engagement I would feel quite a sting. Maybe since she is just 24 she will use this time to just really focus on her career.

I saw yesterday a panel of fans with Tom Holland, was hoping if he was going to say something about Jake, but his fans are so rude to people. I hope Jake's contract is just to make and promote the film, nothing to do with fans.

Diana said...

I have just done some reading and I´m wondering what´s next for Jake, filming for Spiderman (I still cannot find it 100% confirmed but I think it´s going to happen) or Let It Fall Back. I couldn´t find any info on when Luca Guadagnino's movie starts shooting, but Spiderman seems to already shoot or just about to.

The release date for Spiderman is already set, July 5th 2019.

Lots of prep work for Jake!

Monica said...

The filming of Spider-Man begins in two weeks; kevin Feige said jake is not confirmed, but it seems that the THR confirmed he is in the film.

UltraViolet said...

Twitter is a hilarious series of "JG confirmed to play Mysterio" followed by "JG not yet confirmed as Mysterio!" Tom Holland fans seem happy for Jake to be in the movie, Monica. But the MCU zeal is real. Not sure I can take Jake being part of it.

It's hard to gauge Jake's schedule. The only thing we know is that he'll be on stage in January.

Diana said...

Oh yes, twitter world is going crazy! I am waiting for the official confirmation, though. But smart move by MCU in case they are really delaying the announcement if or if not.... keeping everyone alert and on their toes, eagerly waiting for news.

BlueJean said...

What's MCU? I'm losing track of what projects Jake has lined up at the moment, I'm afraid :( Or it could be I'm not particularly interested in the Spider-Man thing. Sorry.

*goes to IMDb to check*

UltraViolet said...

I'm sad that we all have to know these things, too, BJ :) MCU stands for Marvel Cinematic Universe. DCEU is DC Extended Universe. MCU has Spider-man and all the Avengers. DCEU has Batman and Superman. I'd say DCEU has the more iconic super-heroes but Marvel has much better movies.

BlueJean said...

OK :) I swear I'm getting too old for all of this... ;) ;) Thanks anyway, UV!

Diana said...

Sorry if I caused any confusion! To be honest, I had to google MCU not too long ago because I also didn´t know what it meant!

Monica said...

In fact, the Spider-Man movie belongs to Sony, so it's not MCU. The studio has a partnership with Marvel over Spider-Man. Spiderman is only on MCU starring in the Avengers films, but the solos films are from Sony with the help of MCU boss Kevin Feige.

It looks like Benedict Cumberbatch will be in the movie too.

Happy Birthday to you, USA!!!!

Today, I will remember that my country was founded by troublemakers. People who resisted. People who pushed back, and insisted. I'm re-reading Ron Chernow's wonderful biography of Alexander Hamilton. I saw the play recently and it filled me with a sense of hope and energy.

While I'm heart sick watching the horrific events unfold at our southern borders where children are taken away from their parents, I'm also mindful of the stories of many anonymous heroes like a woman I heard about on NPR, who decided all on her own to raise bail money to get an asylum- seeking mother out of detention, find willing lawyers, and others, & helped tracked down her child who had been placed in NYC.

Strangers volunteered to share the driving from one point to another to ferry the woman to NYC to reunited with her son. They are still physically separated, but at least they have seen one another. Through no good offices of our government. It took from early May until this past week to accomplish this. What an amazing act of resistance!

New photo on IHJ

From FB:

I’ve had a fabulous day in London in the sunshine. Oh and we saw Bill Nighy and Jake Gyllenhaal at The Wolseley (not together!!)

Would love to see Jake and Bill Nighy in a movie or play someday.

If you haven't seen them yet, check out new stills from The Sisters Brothers at IHJ. Jake looks great.

Monica said...

I love Bill Nighy :D

Anonymous said...

I guess we should maybe take it to mean that he's in England for Spiderman?

Diana said...

Oh I have been wanting to go to the Wolseley for ages!! The interior alone is stunning, and from what I´ve heard it´s REALLY good and the atmosphere is great.

Next trip, next trip..... there is only about 39.000 restaurants/bars/cafés in London.... it´s not like it´s a difficult choice....

I know Jake has been to Ottolenghi Islington, I wonder whether he´s been to Yotam´s new restaurant, Rovi, yet. I can´t wait to try that one! In case some of you make a trip to London, I can highly recommend Ottolenghi Spitalsfield.

Jake´s got three movies coming out quite close to each other. That will be quite a juggle promoting all, doing premieres etc. I suppose he won´t do as much promotion for Wildlife than for the other ones because that´s mainly focused on Carey Mulligan´s and Ed Oxenbould´s characters. Just a guess...

Diana said...

I apologise for my VERY creative use of the english language...ouch....

UltraViolet said...

Not sure what you mean, Diana. Seems fine to me!

Another FB sighting of Jake, this time at a coffee shop in Covent Garden. No name, so it won't be any help, Diana :)

Maggie Gyllenhaal postedthis today:

Over 30 celebrities teamed up to tell the story of Mirian, one of thousands of parents whose child was ripped away from her by the Trump administration. This video was not created by the ACLU and is not the property of the ACLU.

Jake is one of the people in the video.

Diana said...

Good morning everyone!

UV, I don´t need to know EVERY restaurant Jake goes to *lol* It´s just interesting that he´s going to quite a few places that I/we love going to. Exploring the local eateries has become a huge pleasure and a bit of a hobby over the past few years for me and my OH and it´s always interesting to hear other people´s opinions. I am following a quite popular account on twitter /@Clerkenwell_Boy) amongst some chefs and before we travel we spend ages finding places to go to. That´s what our holidays mainly look like: eating, photographing and walking around as much as we can! Throw a theater/musical performance and a visit to a museum or an exhibition in for me and I´m in heaven!

I have seen the video you mentioned yesterday, it´s a horrible story. I´m glad to see so many people speak up to put maximum pressure on the government. I can´t even imagine....!!

Some more OT - I´m SO happy that everyone trapped in the cave in Thailand made it out! Let´s hope there are no lasting damages to their health - physical or psychological. RIP Saman Kunan, one of the brave divers who sadly didn´t make it back from where the football team was trapped...

There is so much horrible, sad and/or frustrating news from all over the world, including in front of our own doorsteps. To see so many people unite and root for the trapped team and all the people helping, coming together from different countries, different ethnics, different social backgrounds and political views, that has been choking me up several times and gives me hope that there are enough good people out there so we have a chance to overcome this difficult time.

Yesterday in London @ River Cafe, Jake took a photo with legendary film composer Burt Bacharach. Posted by the composer's son, Oliver Bacharach.

oliverbacharach
Jake Gyllenhaal and dad wanted a photo together - Jane and I of course weren’t asked to join.

Burt Bacharach had two shows in London this week, one at Brighton Dome, 9 July. At 90 years, he still brings the house down. He shares the stage with 36 musicians, and from the piano he conducts them. Legendary feels like an understatement. Here's a great Guardian article about his concert.

Check out IndieWire’s exclusive poster for “Wildlife”. IFC Films will release “Wildlife” on October 19.

BlueJean said...

Lots of praise for Carey Mulligan in particular on that poster. Not to say I think she doesn't deserve it, but... sigh.

Hagen said...

BJ, Jake's part is significantly smaller. Besides Chris Nashawaty from Entertainment Weekly and Kenneth Turan from the Los Angeles Times praise his performance.

Hagen said...

"The Sisters Brothers" will have its North American premiere at TIFF. "Wildlife" will also be shown at TIFF. "Velvet Buzzsaw" isn't among the movies that have been announced today.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, Hagen! If The Sisters Brothers will have the *North-American premiere* at TIFF, it's a guarantee that the *world premiere* will be in Venice. No need to wait for the official announcement tomorrow :) Meaning Jake will be there in Venice. He always attends the world premieres of his movies (not necessarily the subsequent screenings).
In 2016 he went to Venice for the world premiere of NA, but not for the following screening in Toronto.
This year he went to Sundance for the world premiere of Wildlife, but not for its european premiere in Cannes.

Ergo, he'll go to Venice for the WP of TSB, as he went to Sundance for the WP of Wildlife.
But if Velvet Buzzsaw isn't added to TIFF's slate, we may not see him in Toronto :(

Hagen said...

But if Velvet Buzzsaw isn't added to TIFF's slate, we may not see him in Toronto :(

I'm still quite confident that it will be screened at TIFF, maybe as part of the "Midnight Madness" section.

Monica said...

so happy that he is returning to venice.

UltraViolet said...

I also wonder if Jake will go to TIFF. I hope so! If Velvet Buzzsaw is there, I assume Jake will be, as well.

BJ, I know what you're feeling re: the poster. But this really is Carey Mulligan's movie, so that's going to be the narrative. Someday...

Lots of Jake sightings in London but still no confirmation or set photos. One from last week:

ohn Falsetto

From yesterday in London, near Oxford Street

Donald has since deleted the photo. Maybe at Jake's request?

Anonymous said...

It's obviously at Marvel's request. If Donald Mowat is in London with Jake he's being Jake's make-up artist for Spiderman. Last week Numar Acar, recently cast as Dimitri, posted on his IG account the names of actors who will work with him in Spiderman sequel, then few hours later deleted all hashtags.

http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/spider-man/news/a862415/spider-man-far-from-home-cameos/

"Numan Acar is an actor set to appear in the superhero sequel, but his social media activity has caught more attention lately. In a now amended Instagram post, his use of hashtags makes for some fascinating reading.

#spidermanfarfromhome #tomholland #samuelljackson #jakegyllenhaal #cobiesmulders #mysterio #nickfury # mariahill #dimitri

Tagging Jake Gyllenhaal, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L. Jackson within an image caption, this could be confirmation of their involvement with Far from Home."

Tom Holland on his IG account posted a video of him boxing

https://www.instagram.com/p/BllSGz3nUXk/?taken-by=tomholland2013

with the caption: "sequel to southpaw coming soon #northpaw #billyhope".

Why not choose a better known boxing movie like Rocky or Creed? The answer is obvious. Jake is his costar but Marvel wants to keep it a secret. They want the identity of the actor playing Mysterio to be a mistery. The name leaked in the press and now Marvel is trying the best to keep it under wraps. Tom being clever this time after years of leaking spoilers, didn't hashtag Jake's name, only his character and movie.

Monica said...

I think the mystery is more because of the end of IW (for those who didn't saw SPOILERSpider dies in the movieSPOILER). I don't even know how the promo of this movie will be.

The Spiderman stuff is silly. Almost no one cares. And the people who do already know.

Wildlife opened the Melbourne International Film Festival. Some reactions:

WILDLIFE. A beautifully potent, stirring, entrancing film elevated by the performances from Jake Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan & Ed Oxenbould. Stunning scenery & music that fit the tone perfectly. Brilliantly written & directed. Dano and Kazan are natural born filmmakers. #MIFF2018

#Wildlife is a slow burn that worked it’s way into my heart. A blistering final act and a closing shot for the ages won me over. Paul Dano can sure direct actors, Carey Mulligan has never been better and special mention to guest tonight @EdOxenbould who is note-perfect. #MIFF2018

WILDLIFE: I dug this so much. While it took me a bit to sink into, I was left completely engrossed. Great performances and loved how the period details were left to small intricacies and flourishes rather than grand statements. A film of both composure and nuance. #MIFF2018

1 WILDLIFE - While the setting and cinematography are stunning, it's Carey Mulligan who steals the show in this tour de force performance #MIFF2018

WILDLIFE: felt longer than it was and the story was perhaps a little thin, but its emotional textures via a sensitive script, not to mention stunningly soft cinematography, amounted to a film with a surprisingly emotional impact.

#Miff2018 opening night film - Wildlife was a reasonably good directorial debut from #Pauldano didn't blow me away but it had some good moments in a low key kind of way. The main kid character literally played a teenage version of Paul Dano!

Ed Oxenbould talks about working with Jake and Carey on Wildlife

This was nice to hear:

Today my sis @GabbyLucy07 recieved an amazing "running foot" #prosthetic. She received it free of charge via a generous donation from actor #JakeGyllenhaal. See no Twitter account for him but sincerely appreciate his generosity. @mgyllenhaal

From FB:

inally...my new socket. I love how the fabric turned out. Thanks to Tillges Certified Orthotic Prosthetic Inc. .

I now also have a sports foot that will allow me to run more naturally as I continue to train for triathlons. (Not ready for a blade just yet). The foot was donated by Wiggle Your Toes, an awesome local organization, that helps amputees. Thank you Wiggle!

Fun fact- If you look closely at the sticker on the foot, you see the word, STRONGER, under the WYT logo. Jake Gyllenhall, who played Jeff Bauman in the movie, Stronger, made a donation to Wiggle after the premiere of the movie. My gifted foot comes from his generous donation. Thanks Jake!

Donald has since deleted the photo. Maybe at Jake's request?

it went unnoticed but a few weeks ago Donald posted something in regards to working for Marvel on twitter. It was posted and deleted within a few minutes so unless you were looking at twitter at that moment you missed it. I'm assuming Marvel made him delete it.

Variety: Originally announced as a movie re-teaming, post “Southpaw,” Antoine Fuqua and Jake Gyllenhaal’s “The Man Who Made It Snow” is now set up at Epix as a limited TV series, Fuqua said Saturday at Locarno Festival.

Inspired by the true story of Max Mermelstein, a Jewish hotel engineer who becomes embroiled unwittingly and then unwillingly in the building billion-dollar U.S. drug trade of Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel, “The Man Who Made It Snow” was originally written by Michael Kingston and Brett Tabor. A new screenwriter is now being brought in to transform the movie into a drama series. Gyllenhaal may or may not be involved, according to his schedule, said Fuqua.

I wouldn't mind if Jake starred in a TV miniseries. But it's not particularly innovative to tell Pablo Escobar's story once again, even if it's told from a different point of view.

bobbyanna said...

I agree, Hagen

BlueJean said...
