Fall Festival

Jake at a Wildlife screening & Q&A, hosted by the NY Times:

Hooray - it's that time of year when Jake Gyllenhaal movies play at festivals worldwide. Today in Venice, The Sisters Brothers has its world premiere.

Jake is on the cover of GQ France, which has some wonderful photos:

Next week, the festivities move to Toronto, where both The Sisters Brothers and Wildlife will screen.

Early good review for The Sisters Brothers from The Hollywood Reporter. Not much ink for Jake, but we know it's not a leading role.

The jovially titled The Sisters Brothers would have felt very much at home among the gorgeous, idiosyncratic revisionist Westerns of the early 1970s. What this will mean to audiences 45 years on is another question. This first English-language outing by the ever-adventurous French director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Rust and Bone) is a connoisseur’s delight, as it's boisterously acted and detailed down to its last bit of shirt stitching. A sterling cast, led by John C. Reilly in the sort of starring role he’s been waiting for his whole career, will give this a certain profile in specialized release and down the line in home viewing venues. ...

Reilly has the most expansive character here and he makes it his own, breathing deep stores of boisterous life into him. Phoenix provides a willing, if less assertive younger brother accomplice who is obliged by birth to be a second banana, while Gyllenhal (sic) and Ahmed are attractive but rather less attention-grabbing saddle mates.

They spell his name wrong twice and correctly three times. SMH.

And if you missed it on the last post, Jake is scheduled to attend TIFF. (Thanks, Paula C.)

And thanks to all for keeping up the posts and the news. It is much appreciated!

Thanks for the new post, UV!

A very positive review for "The Sisters Brothers" from Alonso Duralde for "The Wrap":

John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix Saddle Up for an Extraordinary Western
“The Sisters Brothers” gallops onscreen with a lot of ambitions, and it fulfills them all. It’s a sprawling Western that’s also an intimate character piece; it has moments of wit but also devastating tragedy; it delves into larger themes like the impact of fathers upon sons, and how greed and industrialization lead to environmental devastation, and yet it offers the hope of redemption.
...
The title promises a goofy lark, but this is one of the year’s best films.

Great post UV, love the GQ coveršŸ˜. Great news about TIFF I always love it when he attends. Wonder review for The Brothers Sisters, hope he does a lot of promo for the film ,Its been so quite on the Jake front☺

A new post! Yay! Love the first picture :)

Hope you're OK, UV. Will you visit TIFF again this year?

UltraViolet said...

All good, BJ. Just busy. I am going to TIFF and have tickets for Wildlife and TSB. I am not a fan of Westerns so have not been looking forward to TSB. The reviews have made me slightly more enthusiastic.

I do think it would have helped the movie for Joaquin and/or Jake to go to the premiere. Sort of odd they didn't.

Diana said...

Thank you for the new post, UV! TIFF *sigh* one day... I would love to go. Maybe I am going to make it to BFI in London next year, we´ll see. It would be my first film festival!

I was surprised that apart from John C. Reilly there was noone from the cast at Venice. Okay, Jake and Joaquin not attending was not a surprise (even though I hoped...) but I thought at least Riz would be there. Ah well, there is TIFF.

Some more reviews:

Variety
Awards Daily
IndieWire
The Guardian

Tell you what, it feels sooooo good to read about Jake´s work again!

I hope he will do another audio book at some point, I wish he did more of them! I loved him reading "Letterform, Islandform".

Woo!! Great post, UV!! I love festival time especially when Jake's got work to show I'm so glad you'll be at TIFF! After reading the reviews for TSB, I have to warn people who hate spoilers: Don't read The Guardian. IMO it tells way too much plot/story.

I'm happy the movie is so well received. I'm looking forward to it. (I love a good cowboy movie. UV, if you ever get a chance to watch Tombstone, it might change your mind. :) )

Ooops I´m sorry about that, I haven´t read the whole reviews yet so I didn´t know it could contain spoilers!

For everyone who doesn´t want to do much searching, here are some infos about the screenings at TIFF:

I couldn´t find any information on a press conference/ interview for Wildlife yet. I´m really happy the press conference for TSB is on saturday, that means I can sit down with a cup of tea and enjoy the live stream! Yay! Can´t wait to hear more about this movie, I will have finished the book until the weekend.

Deadline: ‘Rio’: ‘Patrick Melrose’s Edward Berger To Helm Benedict Cumberbatch & Jake Gyllenhaal In Steve Knight-Penned Thriller

This is the project that I told you about last year with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal being courted to star. Their attachments are now confirmed and they will also produce.

Edward Berger is a German director I've never heard of before. "Deutschland 83" is a critically acclaimed series, but I haven't watched it. Let's hope for the best that he can handle this new project.

I am curious as to what UV has to say about the movie itself, I hope she gets to see it.

This is what Donald Mowat posted on ig yesterday:

So very fortunate to have worked with such an extraordinary group of people in London. Such a warm welcome by all the cast and crew who are working endless long days at the moment - a very special shout out and thank you to Jake G for inviting me on this adventure #uk #london #filming #makeupman #bafta #iatse873 #muahs #tiff

Jake couldn´t have stayed for a couple more days, eh? I´m in London from the 20th.... *lol*

So Jake has wrapped in London and was on his way to Toronto obviously but couldn´t make the press conference. He made it to the premiere, though, here is a snippet from a red carpet interview with @fandango:

Jake at TSB premiere at TIFF

I hope we get to see some more interviews with him.

Diana said...

Usually I am always trying to find videos of interviews and q&a´s... but I´m not sure I should look for this one, which took part at the premiere:

Posted on ig by cybemelli

Welcome to the world’s most awkward q&a! Joaquin appears to be a hostage. He won’t say even one word or look up. God bless John, he’s the only one that will speak! And now some crazy girl is prattling on during the fan question section. I’m so mortified for all involved! (The movie was good, superb cast, bit long)

Jake eventually contributed. Riz said maybe 2 words. The director only spoke French and JCR said he felt like he only got to speak so much bc he speaks English.

Toward the end he (Jake) talked about how it was good to work with Riz again but in a different dynamic

Ooooh dear.... there was this comment on the same post:

Oh my gosh, it was truly brutal. We were doubled over in embarrassment when the girl ran up.....a viewer insisted on running close to the stage to ask her question even though they could hear her just fine from when she was. And she talked for so long. You could see the cast rolling their eyes.

Sometimes those q&a´s turn out great and sometimes they just don´t...

Red carpet interview by @etcanada, not complete though:

part one
part two

UltraViolet said...

I think that's a slight exaggeration of the Q&A, although not about Joaquin. He did shake his head and say "I'm not doing it" when someone tried to hand him the mic. But he seemed in a good mood. Just don't want to talk. He might have been afraid he'd ask to be fed - he looked emaciated.

Jake, as always at these things, took the mic and gave a thoughtful answer and included a joke. He knows how these things should be done.I'll try to find a clip of him discussing the difference for him and Riz from NC to TSB.

The flow was difficult because of the translation issues. But everyone looked like they were having a great time together.

As for the move: It is all the things people have said.Unfortunately for me, that means it is a Western and that's just not my thing. The Jake/Riz scenes are the best parts. And I enjoyed it. Just not sure I'll ever see it again.

Unknown said...

Hi UV, I´m glad it was slightly different then described! It shows once more that people receive things that happen in a very individual way and differently also.

I have seen the snippet you mentioned with Jake, it´s been posted on ig. It´s not his complete answer, though, if you have more it would be great!

Such a cool story, BJ. Thanks for posting. Fun to see the office and to know it was designed by Jake's old friend.

Nice interview with Jake from Toronto.

I'll try to write more later, but I wasn't really thrilled with Wildlife. Jake was great but I wasn't as enamored as so many seem to be with Carey's performance. And I'm a big CM fan - I've seen her twice on stage. But I didn't really buy her or her character in this. Beautifully shot. And the kid is pretty good. But the movie kind of jerks from event to event. None of it felt organic or true to life. Both of my friends had similar reactions.

Lots of photos of Jake at the Calvin Klein show and party. Will try to post later. He and Saoirse Ronan look great together - would love to see them in a movie. This one was too good not to post.

UltraViolet said...

BJ, I meant to say that TSB is easier to watch than /Okja because Jake looks so good in it :)

Diana, thanks for posting those links. Some of the BTS Sisters Brothers stuff is fun. It's great that both movies are getting good reviews.

Diana, I feel the same, I´m not looking forward to see Wildlife as much as I am to see TSB, just not for the same reason as you, I hope you can feel better quickly!

UV, that video of Jake with the Elvis song is the best thing I've seen in a long time!

The ET interwier got off at the wrong foot, love when Jake said "wow, you obviously didn't see the movie" but then he got back on track.

The Nine Stories office is beautiful decorated but I would love to see Jake´s office,I think maybe it´s full of personal objects, photos, that´s why it was not photographed

Diana said...

Paula, I had to smile when I saw the photos of the Nine Stories office! I immediately recognised there was no photo of Jake´s office and I think that´s just fine. It´s a very private space, despite of it being a workplace.

I love it when a place makes you feel comfortable, modern and stylish is ok but to me it has to "speak" to me. I´ve been in many places where the interior was carefully chosen, stylish etc. but felt cold and dead in a way. This feels very inviting. A job well done.

Q & A about "The Sisters Brothers" in New York yesterday
Jake Gyllenhaal ended toxic masculinity

UltraViolet said...

Hey everyone - don't mind if your post takes a bit to show up. Just trying to avoid having to play whack-a-troll every day :)

Some Sisters Brothers tidbits from the end of last week. I added the beautiful character poster for Jake to the post. And here, some reviews:

Two notable Things about the Sisters Brothers: Phoenix's deference to John C. Reilly, he's a younger brother and he plays it. Gyllenhaal's part is so well written and played that you want to follow him into another movie all about him.

Bloody, sentimental and shrewdly acted.

#TheSistersBrothers features some great set pieces, good performances (especially John C Reilly) and beautiful visuals.
It also has a 2 hour and 1 minute run time that feels like 5 hours and 1 minute and I’m not completely sure if I’m still in the theater watching it or not.

For a moment, a movie that started off looking like a rickety joke comes perilously close to breaking your heart

#TheSistersBrothers is a witty, acute, unexpected and striking portrait of brotherly love

From Riz in EW:

How was it working with John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix on The Sister Brothers and reuniting with Jake Gyllenhaal after Nightcrawler?

Jake and I were working separately from John and Joaquin, and I always think it’s interesting how on set and off set, dynamics can sometimes mirror each other so there was that element, I hope it added to the onscreen dynamic and relationships between the characters. It was kind of hilarious as well because John and Joaquin were like brothers, when we got lunch together, they’d be ripping each other with this whole sibling bickering, love-hate thing, I’m sure they were leaning into it and playing into it, so that was fun to be around.

With Jake, it’s really interesting to be reunited with him in a movie where we’re on the road together again but to have the power dynamics and relationship be so different to Nightcrawler. I think it’s always cool to go back to working with people time and time again, that’s how you develop a shorthand, that’s also how you learn more about yourself and your own craft and where you’re at as a person is by spending time with people you know a bit better and they know you a bit better, so I actually really welcome that, I welcome working with people multiple times, there’s something in that, being so professionally promiscuous.

From John C Reilly:

When did Jake Gyllenhaal show off to you guys the voice he would use in the movie? That seems to be a thing with him of late, interesting voices to his characters. Change it up.

Well, that's what most actors are trying to do. Some actors are good at just being the same basic personality and they make a whole career out of being that guy and other people like to transform, and Jake is certainly one of those people. Right when I heard his accent I loved it. It's a tricky thing what he was trying to do. It's the 1850s, he's educated from Boston but he's been spending his time with all these thugs out in the West, I loved it. In these kind of situations they are perfect to create something new because no one knows how someone talked back then. I think it works beautifully for his character.

Audiard is one of Jake Gyllenaal’s favorite directors (Prophet & Beat That My Heart Skipped) and doing The Sisters Brothers was basically a dream come true for him. He finds Audiard intellectually stimulating and funny, and he appreciated the passionate commitment of his crew./Despite the obvious subversiveness of this western, Audiard said he was not interested in doing something clever, cynical or tragic (tragedy is “too easy”). Instead, he professed his faith in cinema which he said needs to move him & teach him something about the human soul.

LOL! Riz seems like such a cool guy. I must watch some of his work. I did see one or two episodes from his TV series, but not much more.

I remember him saying (on Nightcrawler) that he sort of felt bad for Jake that "all eyes were/are on him." I wonder if it was the same for them this time, working together again. Both their roles in TSB are supporting roles, so the pressure probably wasn't as high to "shine", so to speak.

UltraViolet said...

Riz does seem very cool. And LOL, BJ. I think a lot of people want Jake and Riz to be monogamous!

Riz Ahmed for @Variety on how he found out about the movie and his relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal and their characters in @SistersBrosFilm in contrast to @SeeNIGHTCRAWLER.

What Makes American Actors Different:

Warm and Morris took a bit longer because the characters changed during rewrites.

“I met with Jake Gyllenhaal in Los Angeles, and he had expressed a desire to work with me,” recalls Audiard. “I liked the idea of working with him, but no project had been the right one until ‘The Sisters Brothers.’ With regard to Riz Ahmed, I was looking in a totally different direction until I saw Riz in ‘The Night Of.’ He brought perhaps even more originality and personality to Warm than what was in the script.”

When casting actors, Audiard says it’s all about digging into not only what’s true about the character but also in the actor’s own life. “Their talent gets exercised by going from one to the other,” he says. “For me, a good actor is one who plays continuously and consciously with that which is true. An actor who knows how to process the exchanges between themselves and the character wins something more: becoming the master of the scene’s pace, which throws me for a loop each time.”

There were also a lot of funny tweets about Jake wrt his assistance with Halloween and If Beale Street Could Talk. Like:

It'd be great if loads of Hollywood folk constantly told Interviewers how ideas and legal issues and contract issues and everything we're solved by Jake Gyllenhaal

Someone else suggested a TV show following Jake as he helps projects get made :)

From the JoBlo interviewer:

So here’s my latest interview with Jake Gyllenhaal (and Riz Ahmed). I must admit I was slightly put off afterwards because they were in such a silly mood they totally threw me off. It wasn’t personal I’m sure - I get how these media days go (Gyllenhaal even days under his breath “we’re gonna be in trouble for his interview”), but yeah, it was an experience.

Photo of Jake from a series of pictures paying tribute to NY City Center:

“Home for me is where a challenge lies. Little Shop of Horrors was the first time I had sung to a New York audience. I can still remember the feeling, the vibration of the audience. It was an inexplicable feeling. I couldn't really comprehend it. That energy has been pretty much unmatched since that moment by anything that I’ve performed, in a film or in front of an audience.”

Diana, loved the coffee shop story. But none of her friends followed up! I would have a lot of questions if one of my friends saw Jake and then spilled her milk, lol.

Thanks also for the Wildlife tweets. The movie continues to get a great response. Some nice photos from yesterday's Q&A.

Some tweets:

#NYFF screening of Paul Dano’s gorgeous Wildlife. Some dude in the Q&A didn’t ask a question but just lauded Paul Dano & Jake Gyllenhaal as “gods.” Jake: “You have good taste.”

And:

It has so many gripping turns and each character takes turns being empathetic and narcissistic, the performances from Mulligan, Gyllenhaal, and Oxenbould are gut-wrenching, and the production design and cinematography probably could not get more perfect.

Maybe I'm biased because it's a bleak period piece loaded with subtext about gender, starring my two favourite actors and directed by another, BUT this movie made me think and feel on a level that so few recent films have.

Powerful performances make this calmly directed debut by Paul Dano a captivating portrait of Richard Ford's novel. As the fascade cracks the floodgates reveal an unrelenting portrayal of family life witnessed through the eyes of the son. Superb! (from LFF)

About the set pics - too funny:

that was jake gylenhaal in the set idk what you people are talking about

"he was in new york for a premiere"

he is jake gylenhaal. he can be anywhere at any time. if he really wanted it he could be right behind you. fear the gylenhaal.

reply: Jake Gyllenhaal is such a dedicated and talented actor, he actually developed advanced holographic technology based on Mysterio's tech from the comics - while preparing to play the role of Quinten Beck

So the Jake in the NY premiere pictures - is actually just a hologram

"he is jake gylenhaal. he can be anywhere at any time. if he really wanted it he could be right behind you. fear the gylenhaal." Lol, my thoughts exactly!

We'll see on those set photos. It all just adds to the mystery, I guess. But it's dispiriting how many news outlets just repeat this info and how many people don't know what Jake looks like.

From twitter:

Court room contrasted with celeb happenings the last 24 hours: Watching Kavanaugh hearing: painful. Watching Matt Damon on SNL: amazing. Showing up for Jury Duty Monday AM: painful. Sitting next to Jake Gyllenhaal in court: amazing. #CivicDuty #SupremeCourt #NYC

I’m at jury duty, here’s an update: Jake Gyllenhaal is also serving today. He already caught me trying to take a selfie w him in the security line. Let’s see where this meet-cute takes us, shall we?
update: he filled out his juror forms; celebs, they’re just like us.
update: we just had a VERY awkward interaction wherein I am standing in line right in front of where he was previously sitting. He wanted to get back to his seat but I couldn’t move so we did an awkward dance and then he gave up.
he must’ve really wanted that seat tho bc he came back a minute later and was like I want to sit here so maybe it’s just easier if I squeeze through. I made myself as small as possible and let him by. in conclusion: we exchanged several words and they were all “sit,” “oh sure,” “no problem,” and “thanks.”
update: we’ve been dismissed for lunch for 2 hours (which is insane to me) and I overheard someone saying that JG will probably be dismissed. not if I have anything to say about it...

Anyone going? I haven´t dared to look at the website for tickets, it´s still on my bucket list to go to a screening followed by a Q&A, I´d just be frustrated because I can´t go! I am always too late when it comes to screenings in London and I need some time to prepare.

UV, it´s probably for the best that I missed that TSB screening, because it would´ve meant a roughly two hours drive, which means pay for the ticket, gas, parking and at least a bite to eat. And since I´ve just come back from London.... well let´s say we had a VERY good time there, especially food-wise!!

UltraViolet said...

I'll keep fingers crossed for Wildlife, Paula!

Never enough of a good time, Diana :) Hope you get to go to a Q&A screening one of these days.

This is too funny.

Another look at the Nine Stories offices. This time we get to see Jake's office. Love all the posters and personal items sprinkled throughout (like the BAFTA). But do you think Jake makes visitors sit on that awful stool? LOL.

BlueJean said...

Oh, his office is so dark with those colors :( I would've expected something a little less "heavy". I do like the posters and the dresser with his belongings on it.

Diana said...

I would have expected one of the walls in Jake´s office in a darker color, but that´s pretty dark. I am in love with the floors! I love wooden floors, the older, the better. The little bit I can see in the photos is beautiful.

This had me giggle this morning. Jake and Riz had a silly moment (again!). I could do with a lot more of these! I like the two of them being interviews together. I hope to find a longer one, just haven´t had the time to search for them yet. I know they´re out there....

Sudden random thought: uhm... aren't the wall panels in Jake's office supposed to be horizontally? ;) They'll look like some sort of balustrade or banister if you hang them differently. OK, I'll leave now ;)

Oh and I, too, love Jake and Riz's silliness!

More silliness, BJ: ET Canada Local TV. And another brief TIFF red carpet interview.

Not sure about the wall panels. At first I thought they were bow ties. It's anyone's guess!

That is a fun interview, Pauls. Love the part about the pillows. We'll see if the Bernstein movie happens. Fukunaga didn't mention it in any of the recent press he did. It's a shame Jake couldn't get the music rights :(

Jake attended The Mile-Long Opera on the High Line in NYC tonight.

For five consecutive nights, October 3-8, 2018, 1,000 singers from across New York City will come together on the High Line for the first-ever performances of The Mile-Long Opera: a biography of 7 o’clock. Audience members will be active participants in this ambitious, collective, free choral work. As they walk along the park, audiences can move in and out of groups of singers, immersing themselves in hundreds of stories inspired by the accounts of a wide range of New Yorkers, about life in our rapidly changing city.

Sounds pretty cool. One of the singers posted:

God damn Jake Gyllenhaal is handsome. Saw him coming, sang to him, but gotta admit it was the only time I got a little nervous among the 15,000 people who passed.

Diana said...

I can totally relate to that. When he walked past me into the Hudson once he was so handsome and I was so absolutely not prepared for that *lol*

This is interesting, Luca Guadagnino said in an interview why he left "Rio"

While Guadagnino plans to direct the “Call Me By Your Name” sequel, one film he certainly is not making is the thriller “Rio.” The movie is written by Steven Knight and is set to star Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal. Guadagnino left the project earlier this year, with “Patrick Melrose” director Edward Berger replacing him as director. Guadagnino revealed he walked away from the film after StudioCanal told him production had to be pushed up from summer 2017 to May.

“I don’t see a way to make the movie with eight weeks of prep—it’s impossible,” Guadagnino told StudioCanal executives. “It takes time.”

Guadagnino continued by calling “Rio” a “terrible waste, because the actors are amazing.” The director said at this point in his career there’s no point in accommodating a rush request in order to “be the good-will guy,” so he parted ways with “Rio” as a result.

From someone who was in the Mile-Long Opera:

So, the final night of "The Mile-Long Opera" took place last night. What an amazingly unique experience. One of my favorite things each night was wondering what celebrities might be passing through. First there was Martha Stewart ( accompanied by someone who turned out to be Susan Sarandon), Liev (Ray Donovan) Schreiber and his kids, Maggie Gyllenhaal with her husband Peter Sarsgaard and kids. Last night I found myself singing to her brother Jake Gyllenhaal followed by James Franco. But, the best, the very best, was looking down from my box on Sunday night and seeing Stephen Sondheim looking back. Surreal to say the least. The celebrity sightings were fun, but what was most satisfying was engaging with thousands and thousands of people one on one if only for a few seconds at a time. Grateful.

am not sure what I would do if I found myself singing to Jake Gyllenhaal. Am sure it wouldn't end well.

I'm so glad you got to share your beautiful voice with all those famouse people! Except Susan Sarandon. She doesn't deserve you.

Amen to that! I wish I could have seen this - never heard anything about it until I saw the tweets last night. Check out their IG.

Old link but some "animated and expressive" TIFF photos.

I wonder how different Rio would be with Guadagnino directing. I was more interested because of his involvement. But if the script is still good... I guess we'll see.

This part of the story mad me laugh:

Armie Hammer, who was also going to the awards, arrived. He ordered a dry macchiato and a Gibson.

“I think my project is gone. My Jake movie is bye-bye,” Guadagnino said.

No time for Benedict :)

Also, the movie clearly was not made in May, so why not get him back? I guess there are bad feelings involved.

Diana said...

If only NYC would be as far away for me as London.... the Mile-Long Opera event sounds amazing. I have only read a little bit about it, but that was enough to stir my interest. I hope there will be another one next year.

Jake has been to a screening of Maggie´s new film Kindergarten Teacher. Of all the photos I really love this snapshot:

Jake and Maggie on the red carpet

UltraViolet said...

Those were great photos of Jake and Maggie.

From a Vulture Conversation with Maggie:

Going back and reading old articles about you, your brother comes up a lot. People often ask if you two are competitive. It’s sort of…

Trite.

My question is probably trite too, but do you think about the roles your brother chooses to do — he’s taken some physically and emotionally grueling ones recently — and what they mean for him as an actor and a person?

Yeah, I do, and there are times when I think, knowing JakeHer sibling, of course, is Jake Gyllenhaal. Maggie acted with her younger brother in 2001’s cult favorite Donnie Darko, in a small role as his character’s sister. During an appearance on The Late Show in 2017, a grinning Maggie told Stephen Colbert, “Jake was a demon child … and then I got naughty later.” so well, I’m glad you’re doing that. And there are other times when I’m like, Why are you doing that? When he did Sunday in the Park With George, I thought, Right on. You are going to blow everybody away. I knew what that was going to do for his heart and his mind. There are also ways in which we’re very different. He’s business-minded in a way that I find inspiring. I respect his ease and understanding of the business elements of our jobs. I think if you have the same job as someone — my husbandGyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard have been married since 2009. That same year, the couple, who have two daughters together, acted onstage in New York opposite each other in a production of Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Prior to that they co-starred in the 2007 short film High Falls. and I have the same job, too — it means so much because you know the very specific minutia of what it meant to take this job at this place at this time. It’s valuable.

A couple of nice Wildlife tweets:

Wildlife - Paul Dano’s debut is powerful in its’ stillness and quietness. Carey Mulligan is ferocious and Jake Gyllenhaal works miracles with limited screen time. The pair really bring the script to life.

Loved @WildlifeTheFilm. So intimate and personal, I almost felt like I was eavesdropping. #CareyMulligan #JakeGyllenhaal #EdOxenbound are magnificent. #PaulDano & #ZoeKazan adaptation Ford's book is superb. Be warned. This film might break your heart.

BlueJean said...

What a shame you didn't enjoy 'Wildlife' that much, UV. Many good reviews. How much screen time does Jake have in it, would you say? I remember going to watch 'Prisoners' and expecting Jake to be supporting Hugh Jackman - but instead Loki deserved his own film, such an interesting character. I'm sort of hoping it will be the same for 'Wildlife', but I'm not sure what to expect.

Surprise - look who was on Today today.

BJ, Jake is not in the movie as much as Loki was in Prisoners. He disappears for a huge section of the movie. And his character is underwritten, I think. I didn't really buy the actions of any of the characters. I'll watch it again - perhaps I'll have a better reaction.

Some more Wildlife tweets:

so I saw Jake Gyllenhaal today and I wanted to act cool, like I see celebrities all the time. so obviously I told him I was a big fan then ran away as he nodded thanks. LOL.

Shitttttt what a quality surprise, Dano was in the house for #Wildlife! His directorial debut's such a beaut. Told wonderfully through the eyes of the son, brilliantly played by @wildoxen...Gyllenhaal & Mulligan are fantastic.. such layered dialogue by @zoeinthecities #LFF

Carey Mulligan, Jake Gyllenhaal & the young actor who had the main role were all great too: great roles for CM & JG I thought as neither is likeable & you all know how I love to know that actors can allow their characters to be unlikable, as not everyone can. Anyway, yes, really good film & thanks again to actual Paul Dano for gracing us with his presence on a soggy Sunday afternoon!

Absolutely loved Paul Dano’s directorial debut, Wildlife. Emotionally charged performances from both Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal, that made for an incredible watch. Unexpected surprise intro from the talented Paul Dano too! #LFF

My fundamental problem with Wildlife is that I have a hard time believing that anyone could be dissatisfied with a marriage to Jake Gyllenhaal #LFF18

Saw #Wildlife earlier today and it looked beautiful. And was a thrill to hear from Paul Dano in person. It’s a hugely assured directorial debut with terrific acting.

#Wildlife #PaulDano excels in first directorial venture. Wildfire is visually & creatively beautiful throughout. It’s exploration of family, repressed emotion, coming of age and social boundaries is multi layered, complex and unrushed.

#Wildlife at #LFF2018 completely floored me. What a debut from Paul Dano. Mulligan and Gyllenhaal superb, and Ed Oxenbould is a star in the making. One of the best films of the year. ★★★★★

Headstrong gala tonight

UltraViolet said...

Jake posted about the Headstrong gala on his FB. He even replied to another comment!

The Sisters Brothers score is on Spotify.

Can ‘the French Scorsese’ Pull Off a Western?:

His manner was not at all solicitous, nor was he cold or unfriendly. He made polite introductions and sat in pensive silence, allowing the rest of us at the table to fend for ourselves. Gyllenhaal, who had just flown in from the States, brought a tray over and almost shyly asked if he could join us. Audiard motioned for him to sit and continued to eat without speaking. “It’s interesting to shoot here,” Gyllenhaal observed to me and Pouilloux, “because it’s almost like you had to leave the U.S. to get the feeling of what the West would have been like back then, with all the immigrants and foreign language sounds.” It was an astute observation, even if he was only trying to make conversation. Audiard said nothing.

Later, when we retreated to his cool bungalow behind the set, Audiard — accompanied by his assistant Camille Lugan, who performed translating duties and doled out cigarettes piecemeal in order to prevent him from chain-smoking — explained his seeming aloofness. “A shoot is so intimate that it would be like going as far as we could together.” Normal life can’t compete, so he rarely socializes with the actors he works with on set, or even once he’s finished with a film. “I might soon change hotels,” he added, “because I’m in the same one as the actors. You can’t tell Joaquin, ‘Stand there, do this, look like this, take John in your arms,’ when at night, you’re in your bathrobe and you take the elevator.” ...

Later in the day, after a table reading and fittings, when we climbed back into the Escalade, he brought up the fact that Gyllenhaal had independently hired the world’s pre-eminent accent coach and arrived on set with a magnificent 19th-century Oregon talking style ready to go. For a man who has spent his entire life around the film industry, he seemed genuinely impressed and even taken aback by the enormous discrepancy in resources between Hollywood and the French system this detail seemed to encapsulate.

Saw this on an IG post

screening and talk at #florencegouldhall last night of “Wildlife” was phenomenal. #LoganHill moderated the talk with #JakeGyllenhaal, #CareyMulligan, #PaulDano, and @zoe.kazan •

The film, based on the novel by #RichardFord (with screenplay by Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano), marks Dano’s brilliant directorial debut. The cinematography, sensitive eye to detail, and acting in this film šŸŽž can only be described as simplistically complex. •

I’ve always been a fan of Carey Mulligan and her work, but she raised the benchmark with this film. She breathed life into the role of Jeannette Brinson. •

Jake was absolutely stellar in his performance as Jerry Brinson, as he instinctively feels the “music” and beats in every line, always bringing a sense of truth and authenticity to his characters. Love that his charm, warmth, and relatability showed both on and off the big screen.

And this made me LOL:

The only question one can ask about Wildlife that must have an answer somewhere is: How in the world is Jake Gyllenhaal's hair always perfect even when it doesn't fit the character's situation AT ALL?

UltraViolet said...

If you want to hear a negative story about Jake on the red carpet at TIFF, check out a podcast called Show Your Work. Lainey, from Lainey Gossip, talks about a disastrous interview she did with Jake this year. It is not a flattering portrait. I saw someone else tweet about it. It's the most recent podcast, about 61-62 minutes in.

There are definitely people out there who have described Jake as difficult - or worse - behind the scenes. It's always disappointing to hear, but it's sort of under the radar. There were several tweets from Rome last year that Jake wasn't very nice on the red carpet at the Rome Film Festival, e.g. But nothing concrete. This could be one. It would be easier to interpret her story if we could see the video. They oddly leave out whether it was ever shown.

Lainey has always been a Jake fan, so if he did behave the way she characterizes it, that was a mistake. (She says she'll still see his movies, btw.) I definitely agree with her judgment that the star being interviewed has an obligation to do their job and not make things difficult for the interviewer, something Jake does usually do in video/TV interviews.

If you want to see nice TIFF interviews, here's a clip. Some of it we've seen before.

BJ, I forgot to say thanks for posting the Eyes video. Loved hearing the analysis. And the gushing :) Especially loved those Prisoners close-ups. Makes me want to watch again.

Another retrospective this week. Newsweek ranks all of Jake's films. Definitely disagree with some of the placements. What would your ranking be? (No need to do all of them!)

Real Sal said...

Thanks UV, I'll give Lainey's pod a listen to this weekend. It's so easy to have 'fan blinkers' on and not see the human side of a celebrity. When I went to his BFI chat last year, it did bother me that we had to wait over 30 min for him to arrive (which is fine) but he didn't apologise or even mention it. But then he was so charming I forgot lol.

Diana said...

Thank you for posting the tweets and whatever-its-called-on-ig, UV!

I´ve also heard that Jake can be "difficult" to work with and I had written some more to that but - to make it short like his mom said - sh*t happens. You can call it a bad day, or misbehaviour or whatever it might be depending on the situation, that´s life. Who knows, I could meet Jake and discover I don´t like him at all as a person.

Jake is a pro and as long as he is not bombarded with inappropriate or offending questions he should handle things like it can be expected from any pro in any profession. And now I should move on.

I couldn´t watch the Headstrong event, I hope it went well. From what I´ve read last year it´s a great organisation and they seem to grow and get more and more attention.

A ranking of Jake´s films, UV? Oh that´s hard... I´ll think about it and post something on the weekend. I´m curious what you all think, there are some to add to the list now!

UltraViolet said...

Real Sal, so good to see you! I remember that happening in London. I think he probably does rely on his charm and when he doesn't use it, he can come off poorly. I don't know if anyone has listened, but his Lainey answers didn't sound all that jerky. Jake can be sarcastic and sarcasm is tricky. Not excusing him, because it seems like everyone interpreted it as assholosh behavior.

Diane: No pressure on the ranking! Maybe we'll do a whole post on that at some point.

BJ: Agreed. I always say I wish Jake could be like Hugh Jackman and have an easier time with fame and fans. But alas, that's not who he is.

Some starry recommendations for Wildlife:

Go see Paul Dano’s directorial debut, written by PD & @zoeinthecities. It’s al beautifully assured debut done with the sensitivity & warmth you would expect from this duo. Amazing performances by Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal as well as young Ed Oxenbould. Out in NY/LA now.

BlueJean said...

Holy moly. Jake has updated his Facebook page again... Is he OK? ;)

It's good to see him post some more - even if it's just for 'Wildlife'.

That ranking... can I name two number ones? I love him in 'Enemy' almost as much as I love him in BBM. Can't believe 'Enemy' ranked so low on their list. Or 'Demolition' :(

UltraViolet said...

I had the same thought about Facebook, BJ, lol. I'm sure he'll go back into hiding soon.

And I knew you'd choose those two films. I disagreed with a lot on the Newsweek list, including the low ranking of Demolition and Enemy. I don't really know my favorite. I have to ponder more.

UltraViolet said...

And he did update again today, about Free Solo, lol. What is happening?

Why did Jake post a Facebook story of his ice cream. What is he doing? Is he having a midlife crisis?

Diana said...

Wow, Jake really does seem to have a fb-posting-fit. Could happen more often. It doesn´t hurt, Jake, you know.... *lol*

So what kind of icecream could the one on his photo be. Stracciatella? We need an investigation on this. ;)

I´ve had a look on the Newsweek list, I don´t agree with quite some of the ranking. I haven´t seen Rendition, Life and Nocturnal Animals yet, amongst some of the older movies from before BBM. My top movies are quite close in the ranking. Stronger, POP, Source Code, Enemy, Demolition, BBM, Zodiac, then the others I´ve seen which I can´t really put in order. But that´s TODAY´s ranking, depending on the mood I´m in it varies.

The one that stuck with me the longest after watching was Enemy. This movie blew my mind and had me thinking about the whole plot for DAYS. I loved it that it had that effect.

I hope I´m going to find more snippets of the Q&A´s from the 20th and 21st, I hadn´t given up hope at least one of them would be filmed completely but doesn´t seem like it.

bobbyanna said...

Oof! I missed the Headstrong event. : ( Looking at that list from Newsweek? I would have put Rendition, Jarhead and Southpaw higher on the list. End of Watch, Nightcrawler, Source Code, all really well done as far as the acting goes. I know Southpaw was very derivative and one big cliche' to a lot of people. And Sorry, BBM, but IMO Stronger was about as perfect a film as it gets. I don't think Jake has ever done better work. He was extraordinary. Have to watch Sisters Brothers.

Just got back from 'The Sisters Brothers'. I enjoyed it! It was fun to see Jake in a different kind of role - even if westerns aren't my cup of tea, usually. Our national hero, Rutger Hauer, must've played his tiniest role ever! :D Some people in the cinema were like: "Was that Rutger Hauer?"... and then the ending credits came on :)

John C. Reilly was the most unlikely western character - but I thought he did well. Some funny scenes, even touching ones. But the highlight for me was Riz. The scenes between Jake and Riz. When I read the book, years ago, I thought: 'What an unlikely friendship between them', but they played it out beautifully. I did have some flashbacks to Lou and Rick, I'll admit ;)

I'm glad I saw it. It wasn't a masterpiece, but it was an enjoyable film. Who knows, I might even go see it again.

Diana, thanks for those tidbits. I really like the way Zoe Kazan interacts with folks on twitter. Agree on the basketball pics :)

BJ, so glad you got to see The Sisters Brothers and enjoyed it. I think Jake looks so good in it, but I haven't gone to see it again.

Hey UV *waves*! Hopefully the trolls aren't too much of an annoyance :)

Usually I see loads of posters around London (buses, the Underground, etc) but have literally not seen a single advert for Wildlife and TSB. I feel like this alwayyyyyyys happens with him and sucky PR. I'm all for his stage conversations but wish he was on popular talk shows or magazines.

Basically, I want a recreation of PoP promo! He seems over that, tbh.

UltraViolet said...

Hi Sal! Good to see you. The trolls are out in full force. Maybe after Halloween, they'll go away :)

Both Wildlife and TSB are very small films. Not surprised there aren't posters. But they haven't done a great job with talk show or press promotion. No budget, I guess.

Jake usually does pretty well on the promo front. But Spider-man will probably involve a lot of promotion, so that might do the trick, Sal!

BlueJean said...

Are both TSB and Wildlife still playing in cinemas in the US? Just curious. Haven't read many fan reports here yet, it seems.

Anonymous said...

On an unrelated note, does anyone know if the Bernstein project is still happening? It's November now and still no word. And I think Cary is directing Bond which is due to start filming in March apparently.

UltraViolet said...

BJ, they are both in theaters. Wildlife had been only in NY and LA, then a few more cities. I think it finally opens wide tomorrow. TSB has been out for a few weeks. Not sure if any other US GBers have seen either of them.

Anon, I don't think anyone knows what's happening with the Bernstein movie. Jake mentioned in an interview that it was still a go, but I don't know when the interview was done.

UltraViolet said...

This could be breaking news but I don't know how reliable it is given that the author seems to think Bradley Cooper is doing the same movie. From a Philly.com story about Wildlife :

Gyllenhaal is also pretty meticulous, and careful about the roles he selects. He won't, as he once planned, be doing the Leonard Bernstein biopic — that role has reportedly gone to Bradley Cooper, who – small world — is said to be pursuing Mulligan to costar.

Gyllenhaal is not hurting for work, however. He's doing another movie with Nightcrawler writer-director Tony Gilroy, called Velvet Buzzsaw, about a devious people on the fringe of art market. Gyllenhaal plays a character with the fabulous name of Morf Vandewalt.

He laughs at the mere mention of the word "Morf."

"I've had some pretty good character names over the years, But that may be my favorite."

More familiar to movie fans and comic book readers will be the name Mysterio, the character he plays in the next Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home.

A return to blockbusters?

"I don't think so much about the size of movie, as what there is to play. And though I can't talk much about [Mysterio], I can say that it was great fun to play," he said."So I'm psyched for Spider-Man, but I'm also psyched for Wildlife. And I hope people get a chance to see it. "

Diana said...

I see what you mean, UV, especially since there are some things wrong in this article. And I somehow can´t imagine that now, all of a sudden, Jake DOES speak about Mysterio? This interview probably took place a while ago, and maybe even before Jake and Carey were on the Today show, so that doesn´t make sense to me.

Anyways, I´m happy that he wrote Jake was easy to interview!

Jake is not in this but I wanted to post it anyway because I LOVE it, Paul Dano narrates a scene from Wildlife:

Jake has been to support his friend Samine Nosrat, who´s Netflix show "Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat" has started screening.

There are no photos or an interview of him/with him, but I like the way he is described:

Maybe I just needed some postive Jake content *lol*

He´s also been at the 10th Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, presenting the award for Breakthrough Director Award to his “Wildlife” Director Paul Dano.

Here are just a few photos:

There are some more photos posted from the above account.

Hamilton has posted the show party or even whole on it´s youtube account in previous years, I will keep an eye on that, so far I´ve found nothing.

Oooh and Jake posting on fb again. I was wondering when he would post about voting in the midterms, I was sure he would!

Diana, that story about the chef was cool. It's fun to hear about Jake's non-movie connections.

I was also happy that interviewer described Jake as friendly and open. He's gotten a lot of the opposite talk lately.

Great photos from the Hamilton event. They don't seem to update that youtube page often, but I hope they will post this year's awards.

And of course, I loved the Beto photo and the Facebook post, except for the affect/effect issue :)

More voting fun with Jake: 'Twas The Night Before Election Day.

Jake posted another story on facebook. It also had me look like ??? a little bit. The photo he used was nice, though.

I´ve looked through the comments on his fb page every now and then, but I don´t know, I might stop doing that. I really don´t understand some people. If they don´t like what he´s posting, why do they read it at all and waste their time by posting insults? I´ll never get it... some seem to think that´s a great hobby, maybe that´s people who usually are too coward to speak their mind in real life. I met some of those. No, thanks.

It bugs me that the top comment on Jake's Vote post is from an idiot. I do love that Jake clapped back at all the people saying actors shouldn't get involved in politics.

What was the FB story about, Diana? I didn't see it and no one on IG seems to have caught it.

I've already stopped. I'm quite sure Jake doesn't read most of it - if any. How could he have the time? I also think it's part of the reason he's not that keen on social media. Every moron can post or comment whatever he likes from behind his PC or smartphone. And anyone who says actors shouldn't get involved in politics seems to have forgotten how an actor became president in the early eighties ;)

I didn't understand the bar picture either. Maybe it's a friends' place?

UltraViolet said...

Ah, thanks, Stephanie and Diana. This explains it:

>>In Sheep’s Clothing is the latest from Bryan Ling—who’s also behind No Name on Fairfax—with a heavy assist from creative director Zach Cowie, the Emmy-nominated music supervisor behind Master of None. When you visit, whether you’re hearing Neil Young live, Japanese techno-pop or jazz flute, you can thank Cowie, who not only helped design the space but curated two distinct, all-vinyl playlists—one for daytime, one for nighttime—and jumps behind the bar to DJ at least once a week himself.<<

Bryan Ling is the manager for Mumford and Sons and other bands. And is an old friend of Jake.

Of course, you snagged the photo, Stephanie :) Love it.

BJ, agree totally on the comments. It would be too much if Jake reads all the comments. I hope he stays mostly away.

"Carey was nominated and as usual nothing for Jake."

If Jake's role in 'Wildlife' is as small as it appears to be, it's understandable. But yeah, it's still highly annoying ;)

I'm not too sure if TSB is still in theaters here - if so, it's only in small cinemas, not wide anymore. Well, that was quick :(

I also hate awards season, anon. But at least we knew it wasn't going to happen for Jake this year.

BJ, both films are going to have a short life at theaters, I think. Wildlife does not seem to be doing very well here.

Those are beautiful boots, anon. I hope Jake does still have them. It's sweet that he didn't think it would be right not to take them.

Sal, you have no idea :) It's beyond absurd at this point. It is hard to ignore, BJ. Which is the point, sadly.

I do fear that it has stifled conversation, as I do sometimes put the comments on moderation. So if you're annoyed or put off by that, please don't be. Unless you're a troll :)

Nice photo from yesterday. Jake is back in his green phase. Diana, I'm hoping for more of the Q&As, as well. There will be another one at MoMA next week.

Real Sal said...

But UV, don't you know it's common sense to ignore such nonsense? ;)

It's so quiet on the Jake front even with two movies out. And I'm a bad fan because I have no interest in seeing either.

I went to see A Star is Born last week. I thought it was okay but did not live up to the hype. Which probably means it'll get a bunch of Oscar noms lol.

BlueJean said...

I just found out that 'Wildlife' will be screened at the same cinema which also screened TSB - but I'm not sure yet whether I will go or not. From all the snippets I've seen so far, Carey's role doesn't appeal to me much - which is a shame, since she plays the lead character :) It's like she's trying too hard to play an unhappy woman. If I go, it'll be for Jake and the kid actor. But I could also wait for Netflix ;)

UltraViolet said...

Ignorance is apparently bliss, Sal! You're not a bad fan. I'm tempted to say they are bad movies, which isn't true. Just not compelling.

BJ, if it's a long haul; to go to that theater, I can't say it's a must. But one of the best things about Wildlife is the cinematography. There are some beautiful shots of Montana and Oklahoma-as-Montana.

I agree on Carey Mulligan. Her performance is too mannered for me. I just never believed her character.

Diana said...

I always feel like I´m living in the wrong country when it comes to screenings, Q&As and the whole lot *lol*

Oh the trolls.... I was sooooo often tempted to post something and then I´m thinking naaaa.... but I´m getting better at ignoring the posts completely. Sometimes I wish postings could only be made when logged in. It would be easier to block trolls. Ah well, we can´t have it all!!

There are still a couple of films I would like to see, I´ve still got these two blurays (Life and Nocturnal Animals) here and haven´t watched them....

I had to smile at the photo. White T and his beloved green bomber jacket. I liked the combo he chose.

TSB starts March 7th (FINALLY! A DATE! I haven´t checked for a while, though), Wildlife still scheduled for April 11th.

Real Sal said...

Diana, I wish he would do a play in London for his European fans! I would really love to see him on stage.

Has anyone listened to the podcast called S-Town? It was on the top 10 feed for a while and I just gave it a chance. It happened to have a really heart-warming Jake mention that made me quite emotional - if you have the time, I recommend a listen (seven episodes)

*warning: does contain discussion regarding mental health*

UltraViolet said...

I've heard about S-Town but haven't listened, Sal. Can you describe the Jake mention?

I really hoped Jake would take Sunday in the Park to London. Would still love it but I don't know if it would break that magic bubble surrounding the production if you tried to do it again now.

Diana, I can't believe you have to wait until next year for both Wildlife and TSB! I thought you had gotten to se one or the other already.

Diana said...

UV it´s a real bummer, Stronger was released on April 19th of the following year! When it comes to smaller movies I´m already adding 6 months to the US release date. I always keep an eye on cinematic releases in the Netherlands but I can´t always go as it´s quite a bit to drive. Apparating would be a thing!

I just checked that podcast, from the description it sounds like an audio book, split up in seven episodes? Would that be a correct description?

UV I am not giving up hope to see Jake on stage in London. I had high hopes after I was being told by a cast member in NY that it was discussed but well.... I just want to see him on stage again. Yes, I would love to see SITPWG again but I would love to see him in another musical or play, too. I was very lucky to find Constellations on the internet (can´t find it anymore, though) and THAT was an intense performance, even though the filming was really bad.

Jake caught my attention because his presence in the two movies I had watched had really stood out to me and I ever since I was always sure his performance on a stage would be intense. I´m always torn between wanting him to do more stage work than movies and not wanting him to go that way because I can´t watch stage work back or even see a performance live as most of it would surely be in the US.

One thing he hasn´t done yet is a tv series, maybe a mini-series like his sister has done. He mentioned that he´d be up for it when it came up in interviews. I think that could be an interesting challenge for him, especially because you can really dive in deep into the character. You´ve got way more screentime which results in having the opportunity to show more depth. One day!

Diana said...

Here are some snippets from an interview with Donald Mowat:

...With spending a lot of time putting make-up on the actors, are they usually understanding or are there days where they’re in bad moods?

Doing the make-up on men is particularly harder. When you’re working with girls, nine times out of ten if you’re working with a female actor you’re doing ‘good looking’ or ‘pretty’ because that’s, unfortunately, what most films are about with women. With the men, they generally get the juicier roles whether they’re getting beat up or chased or shot at and so you have a broader opportunity to do more interesting work. And the work also has to be invisible. Whether you’re covering or creating tattoos, or you’re fixing some funny skin, I think with men it’s more challenging in that sense. Sometimes if you’re doing something where they’re dirty or bloody or sweaty and it’s 4am, they’re just fed up. Y’know, they’ve had a long day and it’s uncomfortable and its cold. But I’ve been very lucky to say I’ve worked with Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Gosling… those guys are great. You can do anything to Jake – you can cover him in mud, you can throw stuff in his hair, you can put contact lenses in, he’s happy. He’s just so committed to doing a good job.....

......

Are there any future projects we can look forward to seeing your excellent work in?

Velvet Buzzsaw, that’s coming out soon. It’s another film with an amazing cast and director; I worked with Dan Gilroy on Nightcrawler which is one of my favourite films. That’s coming out with Jake Gyllenhaal, Toni Collette and Zowie Ashton. That’s kind of a quirky, bizarre art film. That’s out next year. I just went in to do Jake on Spiderman: Far From Home. I wasn’t in charge on that one, but that’s released next summer. First Man is still playing in theaters so we’re doing a little promotion and maybe some awards season, some BAFTA Q&A’s and things like that.

Bless Donald Mowat. He's such a good Jake cheerleader and info source :) Diana, I wish Jake's stage performances were filmed for general audiences to see. Especially SITPWG. How I would love a professional version of that...

Someone on FB attended the MoMA Wildlife screening last night. There was a Q&A with Jake, Carey Mulligan, Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano. He posted this personal description. Some fun stuff in here. Not posting the link because I don't want to send trolls to the poor man's FB page.

Tonight at MoMA there was great excitement and hoohah. They showed the movie Wildlife and it was announced well ahead of time that there'd be a Q and A after it with Paul Dano, making his directorial debut; his partner (in the American Beauty sense) Zoe Kazan who co-wrote it with him; Carrie Mulligan, and Jake Gyllenhaal. I figure everyone under 30 who reads the MoMA film schedule, including everyone who works there, was agog to go. The young woman sitting next to me had a huge white dish-drying rack in a bag from the MoMA Design Store- why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone? (Sounds a bit violent though.)

After the movie was about 15 minutes in, I thought, People may be shitting their pants tonight, but when this is on cable tv in a year a stone cold person flipping thru the channels is gonna find it kind of a glum movie. It reminded me of This Boy's Life except Jake is not as mean as Robert De Niro was in that one.

I told my mom as we were walking home that I wasn't crazy about it, and the glum word, and she said Really? I thought it was so tender. My mom often appreciates films and plays better than I do, even tho officially they are more important to me than her. I like whenever she appreciates something better than I did.

I told Paul Dano afterwards that I like him very much as an actor, especially in Love and Mercy. He said he loved that one and he loved making it. I said he seems very decent and he said Well, I am trying. He seemed warier than I would've expected.

Carrie Mulligan does a perfect American voice in this film. In real life, she has a posh English accent. She said in the Q and A that she has never had a teenaged kid in a movie before and that you have to say to yourself, I am going to have the authority to be a grownup. That she played a cop a couple of years ago and "I don't think ANYONE thinks I could be a cop". But, when she said that about authority to be a grownup, I though Oh. Maybe that is a thought I need to have.

Paul Dano said he never thought the kid in the movie looks like him. But Zoe K said, We were *embarrassed* by how much he looks like Paul. My mom said, she does not remember names between movies, that when PD came out onstage, it was obvious how much he looked like the kid in the film, and that it was ridiculous of him to deny it. ...

UltraViolet said...

Continued

Jake G. mentioned the darkness at the edge of town in his character. I wanted to ask him if he likes Bruce, but I didn't get the chance. He is very funny and interesting in talkbacks, I've seen him a few times now. I told my mom about Taylor Swift losing her virginity to him, but I simply called her one of the biggest stars on the planet, Mom would not know her name.

I'm looking at my notes now. Jake said Carrie Mulligan has a very strong masculinity within her very strong femininity. That sounds cool, right? ...

The very interesting thing ZK said is that she always finds the rubric that characters should be sympathetic to be very curious, because if they always behaved decently and in a linear fashion that made sense, there would be no dramas or movies. CM said that she never wonders whether or not her characters are sympathetic. JG said he tries to serve the story, not his characters.
By law, Paul Dano only had the teenage actor to work with for 5 and a half hours a day. My mom said the whole film hinges on him.

CM said she always wants to be truthful and by default she will do less as an actor so as not to be over the top and fake. She said Paul was really good at seeing when she was doing that and he said Let's do 1 take where u relax, and do the worst acting you've ever done in your life, do something awful. Which she found very freeing.

Another literary view of Jake at a play.

Hi, UV! I'll share my thoughts on The Sisters Brothers and Wildlife in March and April respectively. It takes ages until these movies are released in theaters in Germany. I suppose it will be somewhat more convenient with Velvet Buzzsaw, even if I'm not a regular Netflix subscriber. I take it as a good sign that Netflix will present the film at Sundance.

Jake is in Brasil!!!!

I didn't know he was coming to Brazil. I am so glad to know that he has come to my country, even if he has not had the opportunity to see him.

Anon, if you want to talk about Jake's new girlfriend make your own blog. I didn't know he was dating until last week, good for him. She is beautiful.
That's enough, we don't need to know anything else. This is all about them.

Monica! I wondered if he would really be there or if it was just a rumor. Very exciting. Let us know if you get any scoops.

And yes, BJ, welcome to IG :)

Just came back in after seeing The Wife, so I'll go look for all the Jake news of the day.

I had no idea Jake would/could be in Brazil. I got up at 6 a.m. and wanted to check whether the trailer is online - and found footage from Comic Con at Brazil. So THAT was what it was about, the trailer itself has been delayed and I´ve read it´s out on Dec 18th.

I bet the Tom, Jake and Jacob Batalon had great fun doing the entrance:

There are a couple of tweets from Steven Weintraub, seems like most of the people really had NO idea Tom and Jake would be there:

Saw all these people leaving the @MarvelStudios panel instead of staying for the @SonyPictures panel which starts in 20 min. Think every single person that left will regret it....

Shortly after that he posted this:

how mad are the people at #CCXP that left right after the #marvel panel...

Yep! I sure would be! Because this happened:

So @SonyPictures just world premiered the #SpiderManFarFromHome trailer (which looks fucking awesome) and then #jakegyllenhaal came out and surprised the #ccxp2018 crowd. The crowd was so loud during the trailer I could barely hear some of the dialogue!

Steven´s view of Jake´s entrance

The #SpiderManFarFromHome trailer doesn't acknowledge anything from @Avengers Infinity War or Endgame. Starts like you haven't left the Spider-Man universe. The trailer ends with the reveal of #jakegyllenhaal as #mysterio. And yes you see the costume!

pictures from the booth where Jake, Tom and Jacon were being interviewed:
post from @colliderfrosty

Here is part of the interview that was made in this booth. BUT! There are a few spoilers in that interview, they explain Mysterio´s role in the movie, so in case you want it to be a total surprise you better not watch it! I only found this snippet, hopefully the whole interview will be posted at some point.

interview with Jake, Tom and Jacob

I hope Jake really enjoys this crazy ride. It must be way crazier than what he experienced with POP! I fear for his desire to keep his private life to himself, I´m sure we´ll see that dragged into public, unfortunately. It would be great if I was wrong but I doubt it somehow. They´ll all be after him. Fans, press, paps, whoever spots him. He´s older now than he´s been when it happened the first time so I hope he´s prepared for it and is able to cope with it.

Saw some videos of Jake at comic con SĆ£o Paulo, he was amazed at how excited the crowd was, he said that it felt like a rock concert. Can't find the trailer anywhere wasn't supposed to be released today? Hope he enjoys his stay at SP, it's the only city I have been in Brazil because I have friends from SP, and the city is amazing, great vibe, great food, great people.

Forgot to say he posted an instastory and Facebook story, so check it before it goes away. He wrote the word Obrigado (thank you) though that was lovely.

They´ll all be after him. Mainly Marvel fangirls. They're terrible, kind of a Twilight fan. They will chase, talk about his personal life, hate every girlfriend of his. They do some research to see if there is anything dirty in the past.
We have to be prepared if they come here.

Found it! Here is the footage from the booth, start watching from 7:02:20!

interview with Jake, Tom and Jacob

When they ended the interview they unfortunately switched off the microphones and you couldn´t hear anything that was being said. I am not good at lip-reading but when Jake leaves the booth it seems like he asked "can we go outside?" or something like this twice.

I doubt that this is most of the panel. Some parts are repeated which is a bit annoying but still.

Variety: Jake Gyllenhaal to Star in Remake of Denmark’s Oscar Entry ‘The Guilty’ (EXCLUSIVE)
The pic won the world cinema audience award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was also named one of the top five foreign language films of 2018 by the National Board of Review. The movie, Denmark’s foreign-language Oscar entry, is also nominated for best screenwriter and best actor at the European Film Awards.

Gyllenhaal can next be seen in Dan Gilroy’s “Velvet Buzzsaw,” which will premiere at Sundance and debut on Netflix in February.

I must say I haven't heard of "The Guilty" before, but it sounds like a good project.

Jake on Instagram: Singing with someone as talented as Annaleigh Ashford takes bravery, 10,000 hours of practice, but most importantly helium. Rehearsing "Move On" from "Sunday in the Park with George" for the first time in a year for her PBS special.

This is really cute.
