The Life of an Actor

In the good kind of October surprise, Sony dropped the first official trailers for Life, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. First up, the U.S. version:

And the international trailer:

There was also, apparently, a commercial during The Walking Dead. Sony is getting the party started!

NA promo interviews:

Jake presented Ang Lee with the BAFTA John Schlesinger Britannia for Excellence In Directing award on Friday night. Some tidbits:

“Ang knows that to tell a big story, you have to keep it small.”

“Standing here tonight, I can’t help but think about Heath and how much he would have loved to witness all this incredible change that has been effected in the LGBT community in the intervening years. He would be proud to know that he had played some small part in it. I know I am."

Gyllenhaal then cracked that Lee's first English-language film, 1995's Sense and Sensibility, "is one of the most British movies ever, which is extraordinary when you remember that Ang grew up in Taiwan."

"What makes him so unique and so deserving of our highest honor is that Ang realizes that each film is elementally different. Look at his body of work. How is it possible that Brokeback Mountain and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon were made by the same man? That Ice Storm and Life Of Pi sit at opposite ends of the spectrum too?”

Lee, for his part, said that Brokeback Mountain "brought me back to life" and was "the one time I had a strong sense there is a movie god and he loves me."

Video from the Broadway for Hillary event. Jake and Jon Hamm doing an excerpt from Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here," a satire about a populist demagogue who becomes president. Shudder.

This last part of the post is going to be a work in progress. I want to add the reviews for Sunday in the Park and some photos, but I'll have to do that later on today. I never did it for Little Shop, and I regret not having collected them all. For now, the music will have to speak for itself.

Finishing The Hat

Move On

Oh and a couple of candids from/with SITPWG costar Philip Boykin, who played Boatman. And Phylicia Rashad. They were both wonderful.

"I expected it but it's always disheartening."

Yes, it is. Frustrating too. And while I keep telling myself it doesn't matter and how I just try not to care about awards anymore... Jake should've been in. He really should. The Golden Globes were his best shot, I think.

Chris Sruckmann (online movie reviewer) once said it seems Jake's just not part of "the club". By now, you'd think he's right about that :(

UltraViolet said...

That's true, Ann. Jake hasn't really gone all out for this. But it's not like Viggo Mortensen has been pounding the pavement. Or maybe he has, I don't know. I truly am trying not to pay too much attention, because I knew this would happen.

I'm shocked and irritated that Joel Egerton's nothing performance in loving is getting all this attention. And I hate seeing the resurgence of unrepentant asshole Mel Gibson. It's going to be a long winter.

From Variety:

SNUB: Jake Gyllenhaal, “Nocturnal Animals”
What does Jake Gyllenhaal have to do to get some awards love? His gritty performance in the Focus Features drama should be topping Oscar lists, but somehow it’s not. And the Globes — which adored “Nocturnal Animals” so much, they named Tom Ford as one of its best directors — didn’t do him any favors by not backing the role.

Hagen said...

I'm surprised that Tom Ford has been nominated for 'Best Director', but Nocturnal Animals not for 'Best Drama'.

I haven't seen 'Nocturnal Animals' yet, but unlike last year I didn't really expect a nomination for Jake. I love Jake's performance in 'Demolition', but 'Best Actor' rather means 'Best Actor in a critically acclaimed movie'.

UltraViolet said...

I didn't expect it, either. But with all the love for NA, it's even more egregious for Jake to be left out.

The Black List twitter account is announcing the 2016 entries. Jake did one of the announcements. Dan Gilroy has another script on there, as well.

OMG, I cant stop watching that Black List video that Jake did, #cutenessoverload

bobbyanna said...

Oops. I overlooked the Director nomination for Tom Ford. UV, thanks for the article on Donnie Darko. I think I may include it in my Jake-film fest tonight. Now that I'm boycotting Cable News, (*unless there's a natural disaster) I have way more time to watch the good stuff.

So far I've got Zodiac, Nightcrawler, Rendition, and End of Watch.

Monica said...

I also didn't expect Tom Ford for best director, this was surprising.
UV, I always thought that GG doesn't like Jake despite the two nominations.

Ann, I think it's not just being busy, jake seems like he doesn't like to campaign. He will do enough to promote the movie, but you will not see him kissing everyone's butt and acting desperate. Even at the GG by Nightcrawler, he seemed so calm, while the others nominateds looked anxious.

UV, twitter showed me that Viggo did a lots of Q&As, including for SAG.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up but Jake was pretty remarkable as George in October, he could get in for a Tony Award. He stands a better chance at a nomination there than at the Oscars this year.

This is great news by the way, looking forward to seeing this production again.

The word is ending but at least @Samdi and I have tickets to see Sunday in the Park with George with Jake Gyllenhaal in March

BJ, you know me well :)

Scott said...

No worries UV, I understand.

Anonymous said...

I understand the feeling of disappointment every time Jake is not nominated for something he should be, However I don't think Nocturnal Animals was the one. He's had far better performances than that one, not that it was bad because compared to others nominated in that category it was better in my opinion. Nightcrawler was the biggest snub of all and it almost served him better because the amount of people who still talk about the snub and that performance being underrated has gained him far more than if he had been nominated. He will get his awards, not that it matters really. It just will be for the type of film the voters consider.

Scott said...

"It just will be for the type of film the voters consider."

If the Academy Director branch or Screenplay branch nominates Tom Ford for anything than that argument is mute. Same could be said of Nightcrawler and nominating Dan but not the movie itself. Actors have been nominated before in horrible movies, for example last year Jennifer Lawrence for Joy. And just about every movie Meryl Streep has done in the last 10 years but she still gets nominated. So it's not the Academy itself it's the branches of the Academy.

The Academy not only needs diversity. it also needs to open up nomination voting to all members of the Academy for the so call major actor catergories. Who knows it might create more diversity in the nominations.

I don't think it's fair to blame the Academy as a whole when it's the branches that do the nominations except for best Picture. Unless the nomination process has changed. So you have to wonder what actors/actresses consider an Oscar worthy performance? Or is it just a popularity contest?

I so wasn't going on my rant this year but Maggie G's word for that year ring true not just for Jake but for other deserving actors too. Maybe Jake should go sexually harass someone or go on a racist rant (sarcastically speaking).

Anonymous said...

I was the op on the anon comment "type of movie voters consider" and i agree with you on Meryl.. I dont understand the dedication there with the voters. Nothing she's has done really blows me away but I know she'll always get a nom regardless. I'm definitely not blaming the voters entirely but there does seem to be a list of films that get nominated for best actor or best supporting just based on how the film is received as whole versus performances alone. If movie and subject matter were excluded I do think things could be different. If you look at year of nightcrawler he was up against actors who portrayed real people and also michael Keaton in birdman which was a critic fav movie but Jake's performance is the one out of all of those who people still talk about and gains attention as time goes by. I just wish performance and movie didn't always come hand and hand. As far as the nom for ATJ I don't get I thought he was a little campy over the top to be the one who got a Golden globe nom out of the movie, if anyone Michael shannon should have gotten it... -KD

Monica said...

If you look at year of nightcrawler he was up against actors who portrayed real people and also michael Keaton in birdman which was a critic fav movie

His character in Nightcrawler isn't the kind the Academy likes, critics also only reward those whom they think the Academy will like, so they get credibility in the face of Oscar.
Nightcrawler was highly praised, 95% on RT, why didn't receive more attention from critics? Why Jake wasn't the most awarded by critics knowing that he gave the best performance among the nominees?

Oh, if Nightcrawler had been directed by Scorsese or Fincher, it would have received more attention.

I finally watched 'Nocturnal Animals' two days ago. Can we discuss it with spoilers or is it still too early?

BlueJean said...

As far as I'm concerned it's not too early... UV said there were a few things about NA that bothered her, but she never gave details - so I'm still very curious to know what it is ;) Did you like it, Hagen? When did it premiere in Germany?

It's currently in its fifth week here :)

Hagen said...

Hi BlueJean! 'Nocturnal Animals' opened in Germany on December 22nd, but I couldn't watch it during the holidays. I think some parts of the film were really good: The scenes on the highway are uncomfortable to watch, but very suspenseful. And Tom Ford does a good job with connecting the frame story with Edward's book. It works much better than in 'Tony and Susan'. However the frame story is still the weakest part. The satire on the Los Angeles art scene is dragged down by clichés and Susan's mother is a laughing stock.

Edward's book is much stronger. 'Tony and Susan' was written in the early 1990s, whereas the film is set in the present. However the investigating detective still searches for fingerprints and doesn't care about DNA proofs. It doesn't make much sense. A false alibi might have worked in the 1980s, but not nowadays.

I liked the camera work and the production design of 'Nocturnal Animals'. However the beautifully arranged bodies on the red couch looked out of place. It looked like a photo shooting.

Obviously the film has an excellent cast. Just like in the book Jake's part as Tony Hastings isn't easy to understand. I mean, he recognizes his car and just drives by?

bobbyanna said...

Hi, Hagen! Happy New Year! I share some of your observations, but then I had to remember. We were seeing the "novel" unfold through Susan's eyes. For example, in her mind's eye, as she read his novel, she "arranged" those bodies on the red couch. The red couch was seen before in the movie. In real life.

What would have been interesting, but totally out of place in this narrative structure would have been to see how Edward's images of other people such as her mother, contrasted with her own. I only saw the movie once, but I need to see it again.

Scott said...

Happy New Year and just think in a few weeks Jake will be doing the play and promotion for Life's release in March.

Hagen said...

Hi bobbyanna! Thank you for your observation. I didn't notice that the red couch was shown before. It makes sense that the novel is influenced by Susan's point of view. I should watch it again, too.

bobbyanna said...

Don't know if anyone's seen the Guardian's review of NA, but if not, I highly recommend it:

BlueJean said...

"I should watch it again, too."

Same here! I saw it exactly one month ago (how time flies!) and I've missed a lot of clues. A lot! I mean, I did get the "revenge" painting, but... ;)

I have been reading a lot on NA afterwards, and watched a few "explained" videos on YouTube, and it made me realize there's so much in the film that goes unnoticed when you first see it. I don't know if I'll be able to see it again soon. It still plays here, but I'm rather busy at the moment, so not a lot of time. I'll probably wait for the DVD.

The Writers Guild of America nominated Tom Ford's script for 'Nocturnal Animals' as 'Best Adapted Screenplay'.

And the Casting Society of America nominated the casting director of 'Nocturnal Animals' in the category 'Big Budget - Drama'.

BlueJean said...

Woefully overlooked for his riveting turn in “Nightcrawler,” Gyllenhaal seems to be being taken for granted again, considering he plays not one but two complex characters in Tom Ford’s riveting thriller. He plays Edward Sheffield, the ex-husband of Amy Adams’ character who writes a novel to express how she made him feel in ending their marriage. As we see the novel play out, Gyllenhaal portrays Tony Hastings, a husband and father bent on revenge. Both performances are perfectly calibrated and complementary of each other, a high-wire act pulled off flawlessly. (Jenelle Riley)

pic
This can be a mistake.

Anonymous said...

Seems legit, not at all a mistake, the capture comes from a periscope video posted here by Golden Globes and on their official twitter account.

The HFPA member who booked the presenters gives a glimpse of the best seats in the house, „where only the nominees and biggest star presenters are seated”. At the first table, right in front of the stage: „We have Vince Vaughn, we have Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, we have Andrew Garfield...” (at 1:20 min. mark)

Basically, a HFPA member shows the table where Jake, Ryan, Blake Lively, Garfield, Gibson, Vaughn will be seated. Jake could be a presenter or maybe, hopefully a musical performer. Him singing at the Globes sounds too good to be true, so I’m going with presenter.

Weinstein, Nicole and Reese are seated at one of the tables behind them. Tom Ford at another one. Not shown in the video, Amy Adams seats at another table behind Ryan R. and Jake.

UltraViolet said...

I hate that Jake has tosit at a table with Mel Gibson. Why not seat him with TF or AA. Why is he going at all, really?

Real Sal said...

I hate that I used to love Mel.

Random that he's not with the NA crew. But I bet the media will get on the 'Jake and Ryan bromance' train and that'll be the PR line for 'Life'.

UV - I was looking for something in an old post, and realised that the blog will be having it's 10th anniversary this year and I FEEL OLD ;)

UltraViolet said...

Oh wow - now I feel old, lol. That's amazing. Maybe I'll manage to get a new post up by the actual anniversary, whenever it is. Off to look...

Anonymous said...

Why not seat him with TF or AA.
Random that he's not with the NA crew.

Because there is no actual NA table. The team is scattered, dispersed: Amy is seated at a table behind Jake (supposedly Arrival table). Ford is at another table with his friends, the Johnsons, and stars from other films. No Michael Shannon in sight.

Why is he going at all, really?

I think he will be a presenter. He's seated next to Ryan R, so I'm guessing promotion for Life. Only two months before release.
If he gets to sing (what a treat it would be!), could be promotion for his Broadway musical, too, but chances are way too slim.

Here's to another decade, Gyllenbabble! :D

Scott said...

10 to 1 they can't get him off the beaches of St Barts to even show up at the GG's tomorrow. LOL, wouldn't blame him.

Monica said...

I think he will not be there. Every time Jake was at the GG, he was a presenter, and he's not on the list of presenters.
I also think it's disrespectful he doesn't sit with TF and AT. He's not campaigning for himself, but he will do for RR? It makes no sense!

Anonymous said...

He's not campaigning for anyone. He's going to promote himself and a movie coming out in a few months with his co-star.

Monica said...

If that's it, then he would be presenting. Going just to sit next to the RR doesn't make sense and is below of him.

Anonymous said...

Hilarious, that’s not campaigning! LOL Campaigning means going to countless Hollywood parties and private screenings, schmoozing with Academy, HFPA or guilds voters, sending them expensive perfumes months before the awards ceremonies. Jake’s done absolutely none of it, nada, the only one who didn't campaign.

Reese will be at "Lion" table not to campaign for Nicole Kidman but to promote their upcoming tv show (according to the HFPA member in the video). Same for Jake. "Life" is a studio big budget movie that needs to be promoted by him and Ryan.

Rooney said...

Let's wait and see, what if he will be presenting, then it's ok?

What if he will chat with Denis Villenuve or Ryan Gosling, then it's ok?

Disliking Ryan Reynolds is no reason to lash out on Jake. It's petty.

Anonymous said...

It's not below him he has to promote Life like any other movie. Golden Globes reach a big audience and a lot of actors go to promote their upcoming work. I'm sure it'll be mentioned during the broadcast, they could even air the trailer during commercials.

Scott said...

He might be presenting Ryan for his nomination as he did for Michelle a few years back. All 3 are sitting with Mel Gibson movie's table right in front (Maybe they are part of a Jimmy Fallon skit).

"He's not campaigning for himself, but he will do for RR? It makes no sense!"

To be fair Ford campaign for Amy and Aaron, he lauded over them from the get go and barely mentioned Jake. Maybe like someone said earlier Jake saw the writing on the wall, he wasn't important enough for the director and producer of NA to promote for Awards season. I don't think sitting at a table is campaigning if so then it's really lame campaigning. Supporting yes but I still think it might be a skit or joke about Deadpool ala part 2 of the Ryan Reynolds twin video.

Monica said...

Jake is not on the list of presenters: GG

When an actor is promoting a movie, or any other work, he's called to present. If he's there to promote Life, he would have to be one of the presenters. Like Reese Witherspoon, she's not there to sit next to Nicole Kidman, she's also one of the presenters.

No, Jake is not campaigning. He only promoted the film, but he refused to campaign. I don't think this is why he's not happy with NA, even when Jake doesn't seem to like a movie he is, he is very respectful. He wouldn't let out there for gossip that he's not happy with the movie.

When I said that going to sit and not present is below him because he's a GG nominated in the past, an Oscar nominee, with knowledge in the name. He's not a desperate d-listed to be seen. He will have other opportunities to sell this movie.

Now, I'll wait and see if he will be there or not.

Anonymous said...

There are always surprise presenters and surprise skits at the Golden Globes. Jake was invited by HFPA at the ceremony, otherwise that HFPA member wouldn't mention his name (she didn't mention Blake's name, though she's obviously at the table with her husband).

Amy, Michael and Aron were at BAFTA Tea Party today. Now that’s campaigning until the last minute!

All the while Jake was sunbathing in St. Barts, carefree and relaxed. As in not giving a damn about campaigning. (I also think it's because Focus and Tom, who directed NA's marketing & awards campaign, treated him unfairly and disrespectful - I mean, manscaping??? The only one who treated Jake right was Amy. They genuinely like and respect each other.)

He does seem to be having so much fun with Greta in St. Barts that getting him to trade his boardshorts for a stuffy suit might prove a difficult task.

But truth be told, he has to go back home to NY for SITPWG rehearsals, so what’s a detour to LA for his movie promotion at the Globes? Bonus: he's seated with his "work family": he shares the agent (Patrick Whitesel) with Ryan and the publicist (Mara Buxbaum) with Andrew Garfield.

bobbyanna said...

I agree, Jake doesn't need to show up just to be seen. He usually has a specific role to play either as a nominee or a presenter. I don't think Jake's participating in the GG. I think eventually he'll head to NYC to get ready for the 10 weeks on Broadway with a major Sondheim musical that begins in February. almost exactly a month from now.

He ought to hang around St. Barth's a couple more days. : ) There's a snow storm in NYC right now isn't there? LOL! He's been working non-stop for such a long time. I'm glad he's getting some serious R&R time. It seems like we rarely hear of Jake taking real vacations except for the occasional hop over to Martha's Vineyard. Usually it's travel for movie junkets.

"I don't think this is why he's not happy with NA"

Monica, you think Jake's not happy with NA?

"Tom, who directed NA's marketing & awards campaign, treated him unfairly and disrespectful - I mean, manscaping???"

Anon, I agree the promotion focus was too much on Amy and Michael Shannon from the start, but to say Jake was treated "disrespectful"... I don't agree. I've read several interviews in which Tom spoke very highly of Jake - including one in a Dutch magazine. Tom's "manscaping" comment might have been a slip of the tongue or an inside joke - who knows?

I see NA mostly as an ensemble movie, to be honest. Jake isn't the only star in it. We'd like to see him nominated - sure. We's like to see him rewarded for his work - of course. But it was pretty clear to me from the start that it's not gonna happen. Not with this film. I don't know, it feels like it's too much a group effort and not enough Jake. Or maybe I should say: Jake's role isn't showy enough. I've read many reviews which hardly mentioned Jake and I really think it has to do with the role of Tony - a timid, humble man. No matter how good Jake is, I feel he gets overlooked in NA because of the showiness of two other male parts / actors: Michael and Aaron.

Or maybe Jenelle Riley is right and Jake is "taken for granted" once again. And let's face it: if 'Nightcrawler' didn't do it for him, NA won't do it, either.

I agree with this. I feel like it's expected that Jake will always deliver an outstanding performance therefore he's overlooked because people just take it for granted. Critics focused on Amy and Michael Shannon in their reviews. I think this is why they were pushed for awards. I don't think anyone expected that ATJ would give a good performance so he surprised people and therefore got some attention.

And let's face it: if 'Nightcrawler' didn't do it for him, NA won't do it, either.

Exactly! This is why I am less hopeful of awards for Jake in the future. It all goes back to them ignoring his performance in Nightcrawler. If they couldn't see it then, they won't see it ever, imo.

Eveyone saw it, except the Academy. It's still upsetting.

The Academy was who I meant. It is still upsetting, especially when some of the performances that were nominated that were weren't even in the same league as what Jake did in Nightcrawler. Sigh.

Excited to see Jake at the GG tonight though :) Wonder if Greta will be with him.

I'm confused. Just JAred posted the "complete list of presenters a little while ago and no Jake. I'm expecting him. I hope he's there.I can't think of any other reason to watch these.
: ( I'm not a Fallon fan... : /

I really don't feel enough effort was made on Jake's behalf for NA and maybe I'm being unreasonable & petty but I think Tom Ford always says nice things about Jake when asked, yet doesn't seem enthusiastic enough to push for him.

The main focus has been on Amy, and alternating between Shannon and Johnson. Maybe Ford was disappointed that Jake wasn't available to help promote it as much as the others were? Who knows. We can speculate endlessly.

NA does have an ensemble quality, but Jake was the stand out. He played two distinct roles, each demanding in its own way. Both Johnson and Shannon did well with their characters, but IMO Johnson was sort of a stock bad guy character. I've seen that character in a lot of other movies of a certain kind over the years.

Whatever. I do hope we see Jake tonight. : )

Monica, you think Jake's not happy with NA?

No, it was talking about who thinks he's not happy with the movie because he was neglected in the script and promo.

Bob, Golden Globe account on twitter confirmed Jake as one of the presenters. But I'm still annoyed that he's on the same table as Mel Gibson. Also with Ryan and Andrew. Awful table! I hope Greta will be there.

Academy has always did it ignoring great performances. Jake needs to find the right role to the taste of the Academy.
When I read the book, I knew Tony wouldn't be this role.

I agree that if he wasn't nominated for NC he wasn't going to get recognized for NA.
Looking forward to the GG awards tonight!

" "work family": he shares the agent (Patrick Whitesel) with Ryan and the publicist (Mara Buxbaum) with Andrew Garfield"

Mara also reps Casey Affleck so that really a great work family.

Congrats to Aaron, surprised but it was great performance. Boy did Tom Ford look uncomfortable when he won though. I don't think Jake is there or he is running really late.

He's there, just saw him.

According to someone on FB he was just leaving LAX at 5:30 so he was definitely cutting it close.

Nice of Aaron to thank him.

I didn't expect Aaron to win, it means the campaign paid off.

Viola yes!!! She deserved it for Fences. Aaron winning was a surprise I agree Monica, campaigning paid off.
Glad Jake made it, looks like he was running late.
