Suddenly Everest

Southpaw is still drawing fans in cinemas and will be opening in more countries over the next few weeks. But Universal is beginning to gear up for Everest, releasing next month. Trailer #2 arrived today:

This is definitely not a star vehicle for Jake, but I'm looking forward to the promotion. The trailer is intense.

Better than the first trailer.

Sheesh! I had to stop watching when James Brolin was crossing over the crevass. I don't know how in hell I'm going to get through the full IMAX version of this. Only for you, Jake. : )

BlueJean said...

That "... and Jake Gyllenhaal" credit still puzzles me. I know it has been discussed before, but...

Yes, better than the first trailer, but they showed the entire movie :P I still like the European / international trailer better. It has more Jake in it ;)

bobbyanna said...

Blue Jean, in Rendition, when the opening credits roll, at the very last it says, "...and Meryl Streep" I take it to mean that even though Jake is not the main star of the movie, he is a major star, and important enough to warrant a special credit. Just my interpretation. Everest is an ensemble movie with a lot of impressive actors, so I take this as a very prestigious position to be in.

Hagen said...

Do we know when it's opening in Spain yet?

Unfortunately "Southpaw" doesn't seem to have distributor in Spain yet (Sensacine).

The "Everest" trailer looks very cool. :thumbs up:

I don't know how in hell I'm going to get through the full IMAX version of this.

Lucky you, bobbyanna! There are hardly any IMAX theaters in Germany. I have to settle for the regular 3D version.

That "... and Jake Gyllenhaal" credit still puzzles me. I know it has been discussed before, but...

There's the same "and Jake Gyllenhaal" credit in the German poster. Though I doubt that many people over here understand how it is meant. For my part, I didn't get it.

BlueJean said...

Almost all online articles / links on 'Everest' only mention Jake! Or put his name first :) Yes, I guess it is prestigious - in a good way :)

bobbyanna said...

LOL! Hagen we're getting it in 3D IMAX whatever that is. We don't have a lot of IMAX screens, but it does allow the theatres to charge more to see it in IMAX. This movie is going to be an edge of your seat thriller for sure.

Yep :( Well, at least we have a date for Everest…

And speaking about that and Jake's screen time in the movie, I read someone saying on IMDb that Jake's role is not big and that he is a supporting character at best. Another person in reddit says: "I have seen a preview of the movie and this trailer is tonally nothing like the movie itself. The trailer sets an action tone whereas the movie is more built on suspense. Gylenhaal is a supporting character and has relatively little screen time in relation to how the movie's been marketed. The movie is Jason Clarke's and he's great, along with the rest of the supporting cast."

We knew that the film was going to focus on Rob Hall's expedition, but I did not expect Jake's role to be that small. After reading The Climb I thought there was a lot of interesting things to say about Fischer's expedition and all the shit he, and part of his team, had to handle (Lene Gammelgaard was a nightmare) the days before the tragedy.

Well, I'm still excited for the movie, but I think that, even if he is barely in the trailers, the marketing is focusing a bit too much on Jake and that will confuse the audiences.

According to MyEntertainmentWorld.com "The Man Who Made It Snow" will be filmed in February 2016.

So, it's really happening... yikes

I just hope he doesn't turned down a promising project because of this movie.

Jake seemed very into it when he was doing Southpaw promotions, so unless it gets pulled because people don't think SP made enough obey, I'd say it's a go.

I would hope that someone could come in and give the script a cliche review, because SP would have benefited from even just a few tweaks. And no, I don't think that person should be Jake's mother.

I wonder if this would work for Jake. I don't know if Lew Archer is supposed to be older. According to that he does have blue eyes, but he's 6'2". I think they could fake that!

As for Everest, I posted a twitter convo last week, I think, between film blogger types, one of whom said the film "needed 500% more Gyllenhaal." I took that to mean Jake was fun/good in the movie but not in it very much. Which is a shame.

LikeMonaLisa, that tweeter is confusing Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel, I think. The fork thing was from Fallon's show.

Ann said...

UV, I had the same thought about the Coen Brothers new film.

Nocturnal Animals has Joaquin Phoenix listed on the site Hagen posted. It looks like it was last updated on August 4th.

I know everyone is skeptical about The Man Who Made it Snow but perhaps it's a tad too early for that? Things could still change as it's still in the early stages. As cliche as SP is, Jake still gave an incredible performance and the film was still very entertaining.

bobbyanna said...

UV, Ann, I thought the very same thing when I read about the Coen brothers'project.
Jake would be perfect!!!

I'm very nervous about The Man Who made It Snow.

Kristie said...

What is it with The Man Who Made it Snow that has some of you concerned? I wasn't around here to be up-to-date with that:p

Monica said...

so unless it gets pulled because people don't think SP made enough obey

total budget was 55 million.

because SP would have benefited from even just a few tweaks.

I haven't seen the film, but knowing his other works, Fuqa loves clichés, stereotypes, all very exaggerated.

After seeing Very Good Girls, I'd be worried about what his mother can do.

Ann said...

I think it has to do with Antoine Fuqua directing it and Jake's mother rewriting the script.

Variety: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon Join Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Nocturnal Animals’

Shannon will play a detective investigating the violent incident Gyllenhaal’s family is involved with and Taylor-Johnson plays a mysterious figure who may pose a threat to Gyllenhaal’s family.

I pictured someone more intimidating to play Taylor-Johnson's part.

Anonymous said...

"I pictured someone more intimidating to play Taylor-Johnson's part."

They should switch the casting.

BlueJean said...

Jake's mom? Oh, I missed that too. I hope they / she can be neutral enough not to turn it into a "made with the help of family and friends" film. Not to say there's anything wrong with that necessarily, but Jake's friendship with Fuqua... I'm a bit worried he'll just do TMWMIS because of that, to be honest. The story itself, the character Jake will be playing... I don't know. It doesn't appeal to me at all right now.

I'm looking forward to 'Demolition' so much more, for some reason. I hope there'll be some love and romance in there for Jake. Possibly in the usual "dark" and off-beat way Jake loves to portray his characters, but still... Yes, I hope that'll be great.

And I'd love for Jake to work with the Coen brothers as well. But most of all, I'd like him to re-team with Denis Villeneuve again - or even Dan Gilroy. Both Denis and Dan really brought out the best in Jake in recent years. If any of those two are able to offer Jake an interesting project or script... I hope he'll jump at it!

bobbyanna said...

LOL! Hagen I love that headline from Variety It's not "Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals" It's "Jake Gyllenhaal's Nocturnal Animals."

My concern with The Man Who Made It Snow is that it's very derivative. It's similar to Traffic, and The Counselor, Savages, and a bunch of other cartel movies. I know it's a true story. Maybe back in the 80's it would've had some shock value. Unassuming Jewish guy gets involved with Colombian drug cartels, then turns informer.

Then there's the fact that once again, there are other movies on the same subject: The Infiltrator starring Bryan Cranston : "A U.S. Customs official uncovers a money laundering scheme involving Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar," comes to mind. They've finished shooting, it's in post production right now, with a 2016 release date. The cast isn't A List aside from Cranston, but it's still important to know about. I wish, honestly, that pressure and financial considerations would scuttle this project.

Antoine Fuqua and Jake's mother are secondary considerations for me. Naomi directed Very Good Girls, and I think she's considered a much better writer than she is a director, but I confess I cringed when I read they were bringing her into this movie project.

Jake Gyllenhaal Signs First-Look Deal With ‘Nightcrawler’ Producer Bold Films

http://www.thewrap.com/jake-gyllenhaal-signs-first-look-deal-with-nightcrawler-producer-bold-films/

Jake Gyllenhaal has signed a first-look production deal with Bold Films that will build on the success of their creative partnership on “Nightcrawler,” the company’s CEO Gary Michael Walters announced Thursday.

The partnership offers Gyllenhaal the opportunity to acquire and develop new material. Riva Marker is set as production executive for Gyllenhaal’s new company.

“We are thrilled to be back in business with Jake. I truly enjoy our artistic collaboration,” said Bold Films chairman Michel Litvak. “His impeccable taste in projects and deep knowledge of how to make high quality films make him a formidable producer.”
“I admire greatly Jake’s dedication to his craft and support his desire to further explore his voice as a filmmaker,” added Walters. “When we worked with him as a producer on ‘Nightcrawler,’ I was impressed by his commitment not only as an actor but also behind the camera. I’m very confident we can create exciting projects together that will contribute significantly to Bold’s ongoing expansion.”

“Bold Films chooses to tell stories that I love — unflinching yet entertaining,” said Gyllenhaal. “I look forward to making movies that are successful both artistically and financially. That’s what Gary and Michel do. They are nonconformists, who have already proven to be terrific partners on ‘Nightcrawler’ — protecting stories and the artists who tell them.” He added, “Riva Marker is a remarkably talented producer. We are excited to develop material and are determined to surprise.”

Bold’s Karen Barna, SVP of business and legal affairs, handled the negotiations for Bold.
Gyllenhaal, who currently stars in Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama “Southpaw,” will soon be seen in “Everest” and “Demolition.” He’s also set to star in Tom Ford’s new film “Noctural Animals. He’s represented by WME and Bloom Hergott.

BlueJean said...

Ït says "Gyllenhaal's new company". So - does that mean he'll be starting his own production company? Wow! That's excellent.

Anonymous said...

I hope it's directing possibilities coming up, he has certainly found his niche, I just wish his office credibility was better. Had high hopes for Southpaw. Audiences suck.

bobbyanna said...

This is great news. He's partnering with Boldin a new production company. I'm thinking then, that this will be a more formalized, structured approach to finding good, original projects and developing them, and getting them financed. It means to me that Jake is more independent and taking more responsibility for his own artistic collaborations. He is becoming a filmmaker who can become a real force as an artist. Very happy news!

I loved this part:

We are thrilled to be back in business with Jake.
Hot and good news about Aaron Taylor in Nocturnal Animals. I always knew that Tom Ford wouldn't disappoint me!! :P

Seriously, great news about Michael too, who took the role of Joaquin, I thought he would be her husband. Probably Jake will play the husband and Tony.

Very good about Jake and Bold Films.

"made with the help of family and friends" film.

That's what I thought when I read about his mother. For me, is the only way to understand why he will work again with the guy who gave him his first rotten movie in years.
I will try to read the script tonight.

UltraViolet said...

This is all intriguing! Gary Michael Walters seems like a sleazy producer type if you check out his Instagram. But Nightcrawler and Whiplash were a pretty good one-two punch. I can't wait to see why movies Jake helps bring to the screen.

Riva Marker has some good films on her IMDb page, as well. Beasts of No Nation is getting a lot of buzz.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is not promising for Nocturnal Animals. Let's hope it's a small role. I saw this on AW:

The cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey briefly mentioned this movie in a recent podcast. He said he's excited and has been working with designers on this already. The interviewer asked if this movie will be shot in film or digital. He said they haven't decided yet (or maybe he doesn't want to talk about it).

UltraViolet said...

Monica, you need to rethink hatred for Southpaw. You haven't even seen it yet!

As for the $55 million budget, that includes marketing and promotion. BoxOffice.com includes those figures, which they estimate. When you hear people refer to a movie's budget, it does not usually include M&P. So in those terms, Southpaw cost $25 million. And depending on how it does overseas, it should be a modest moneymaker.

I am secretly hoping that Demolition comes out of nowhere sort of like Nightcrawler. Please don't rain on my positive thinking with script reviews and those awful people comments over at Awards Watch.

I think SP will do well offshore if it opens in more markets. It's just really nice seeing Jake's name out there and the way he is making new fans one film at a time. Rotten tomatoes be damned. Didn't critics hate It's a Wonderful Life and it made no money. No I am not comparing that film to SP but you never know what becomes a dear movie to fans.

I also noticed that Peter Sarsgard is in M7. Antoine is certainly employing the Gyllenhaal family, LOL. Just waiting for Maggie G to get cast in one of his movies.

Monica, I get your point on Fuqua. "Terrible reviews" is a bit much maybe, but they could have been better, I agree. It's such a shame after all the hard work Jake has put into the movie. It kinda feels like Jake's performance is simply too good for 'Southpaw' as a whole, and that's something we can blame Fuqua for, ultimately.

But I haven't seen it yet, so... ;)

It really is his first film with terrible reviews in a long time.

The reviews for "Southpaw" are hardly terrible. Overall I prefer more original and innovative stories, like most of us do. But it could definitely be worse, if Jake were stuck in a super hero franchise for example.

Anonymous said...

And don't forget bad reviews for Accidental Love, it has barely 7% on RT, so SP is still not the worst. And as I considered e.g. Blood Diamond great movie, it has only 62 on RT, and that's not a big difference. :-). SV

I love that Jake has signed this first look deal. It's a real testament to how he's grown and continues to do so not just as an artist but also a filmmaker. It really seems like Jakes career is speeding ahead full throttle. I just hope it doesn't mean that he has less time to star in movies or on stage. Cos let's face as much as we all love this and are proud of him, we'll all really miss that. On a separate note I'm going to be in NY next week, any chance you think Southpaw might still be playing?

Thank you for this new post, UV, and thanks Piruleta for the last link to SP "Anatomy of a Movie" (are they the same guys who distroyed 'Brothers' by Jim Sheridan time ago?)... however, the same as BlueJean.. I will try hard to avoid it till September...

I really hope that Jake's role in 'Everest' isn't that small as they said; surely it won't be such big as the promoting suggests... maybe somewhere in between... I was also thinking: Everest producers perhaps chose not to focus so much on Fisher's expedition also to avoid all the controversy about oxygen, Boukreev, which is a relevant part of Krakauer's book (I'm not going deeper, 'cause I don't want to give it away)... so it will be interesting to see what they will say about it (if someone asks them)!

"The movie spins a two-part story that follows a woman (Adams) who receives a book manuscript from her ex-husband, who she left 20 years earlier, asking for her opinion. The second part revolves around a man (Gyllenhaal) whose family vacation turns violent."

I think it would be fun if Amy Adams would play Tony's wife, too.

Deadline estimates that "Southpaw" will gross between $4.3 million to $4.6 million this weekend based on preliminary Friday data. This would imply a much better hold than last weekend.

Glad to see another good drop for Southpaw. But that first weekend drop really did some damage. I hope it can eke its way to $50 million. It's still doing well in the UK, where it's already made almost $9 million.

Deadline: SOUTHPAW
The gritty boxing drama starring Jake Gylenhaal grossed $2.5M in 17 markets this past weekend to bring its total cume to $14.8M internationally. Combined with the domestic gross, the worldwide cume is about $55.5M. In its third week in France, it dropped 27% and the market cume is now $3.4M; the U.K.’s cume is now $8.9M. In Russia, it has a total of $775K, and it opened to No. 5 in Sweden ($81K) and No. 7 in Norway ($45K) this past weekend.

I have no clue what a boxing movie will do over here in The Netherlands, it's a small market compared to other countries. I do know that it got a wider release than first planned. The cinemas near me weren't going to show Southpaw, but now they will! Yay for me;p

Is that photo a recent picture of Jake? He got a hair cut? Because he didn't have a haircut on the plane going to LAX. This picture looks like it was taken in an airport, and it reminds me of the way he looked for Demolition. It's a good look for him. Hope Tom Ford helps him dial it back a little. He's had that sort of louche, European look going for a while now. It was spot on for Cannes, but I'm definitely ready for a change, Jake!: )

My favorite actor is either Kevin Hart or Jake Gyllenhaal !

Just saw south paw. What a great movie. I highly recommend it. #awesome

Funny:

Locked eyes with Jake Gyllenhaal last night so I basically can die now.

It's basically a New York rite of passage. Welcome, baby!

I think that was at the opening night of Hamilton.

Sorry movie, but I had no idea listentomarlon was a movie.

Really, "Movie." No need to be rude. It's not like Listen to Me Marlon is lighting up the box office.

I never saw this photo of Jake going to Hamilton's opening night. GQ applauded the hair, unfortunately :)

The guys at GQ love him, don't they? I'm getting used to this look now. So Jake... time to change it! ;)

Nice pics of Jake, he and Josh have great hair. I like Jake's full hair with and a little messy with less gel.

Can't wait to see the tight buns in spandex, lol. I hope I am "chemically" prepared, that Jake and his gyllenlism.

Thanks for posting that. It's a fun read! Jake seems very relaxed these days. And they took the photos before the beard came back!

New post.
