Promonto

As Lou Bloom continues to dispense his wisdom, some TIFF tidbits.

Give the 'Nightcrawler' a minute…
Jake Gyllenhaal breathes between shots. Photographer: Kelsey Fain.

From the Variety photographer:

"It was an absolute joy to work with Jake," said Pari Dukovic, who photographed Jake Gyllenhaal. "I hoped to show Jake's range as an actor and the intensity with which he dedicates himself to his work."

Rene Russo on Jake:

WWD: What was it like to work with Jake?
R.R.: "That was intense because Jake had laser-like focus. It’s different working with different people depending on the film but he was so laser-like that I just stayed out of his way, stayed quiet, and then when the cameras rolled we did our thing, but before that I had to let him be in his own Lou world because it was super intense for him. He was really serious about it because it was not easy. There was a lot of dialogue".

WWD: I’ve been hearing Oscar buzz, especially for his role.
R.R.: "I hope so. I hope there’s an Oscar buzz. He’s amazing in this movie!"

First movie you remember:

Case in point: Jake Gyllenhaal, who started his film-watching life with a box-office and critical failure. “One of the movies I remember seeing in the theatre very clearly was Dune. I had chicken pox. My mom took me during the day when nobody was in the theatre.”

Love this description of the NC reaction:

So, that’s what Oscar buzz sounds like. It’s literally a hum as people filter out of a press screening, a communal muttering about “complete transformations” and “innocent eyes,” a hive of phones vibrating as people correct the spelling of “Gyllenhaal” in a flurry of Tweets about his inevitable nomination for Nightcrawler, screenwriter Dan Gilroy’s first film as a director. It’s not a loud noise, but it is persistent. And it’s certainly justified.

TIFF After Dark:

The city shines brightest at night.” That’s the tagline for Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal’s newest independent-ish buzzy flick. It’s also a fitting mantra for everything that happens near and around the Bell Lightbox epicentre. And Soho House would most certainly have top billing.

Indeed, the celebration for Nightcrawler was a waiting game, anticipation-inducing for journos and star stalkers who just want something, anything, to happen and officially usher TIFF’s first and strongest (party) weekend into boldfaced existence.

“When are they getting here?” It’s not they, babe, it’s simply he. Gyllenhaal was obviously the name on everyone’s lips but somehow, it’s not entirely polite to run around asking when the man of the hour would arrive, already 45 minutes behind schedule. Which I did anyway. Or got other people to do for me. ...

And, finally, an explosion of light from the corner bar. Jakey’s here, looking delicious and well-rounded, having gained back much of the 20 pounds he had lost for the role. His YSL suit is picture perfect, literally, and Russo makes her way past all the handlers to drape herself over him. Make me relevant again, she says with her eyes. Kidding. It’s all small-talk and brief smiles in between Gyllenhaal’ s smoldering camera face, which secretly makes all of us laugh. Awww.

good stuff in these videos, UV!
The BBM one really made me smile. He looked so young! ...Nine years ago... I guess he was! it was an exciting, happy time.

I'm thinking about how young Jake was when he made his first feature film as a lead actor, in October Sky, and Chris was there. I'd love to hear some of Chris Cooper's Jake Stories. : )

It was fun, Mary. And we are in a storm of Jake news now!

You know what I'd love to see, Bobbyanna? More shots from the Jake's Venice time that year.

Monica, I forgot to add my disappointment that Feinberg didn't give Jake better Oscar chances. Plus ca change...

Moviefone things Jake will get nominated, lol:

Jake Gyllenhaal's gaunt visage in "Nightcrawler" will stick with you for days ... and probably earn him an Oscar nomination.

And I loved the last line here:

Nightcrawler

In Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a gaunt recluse hunting Los Angeles by night as a stringer -- a freelance cameraman selling footage of the guts and gore found in local crime scenes to the highest bidding news station. As Bloom gets more and more successful, the film reaches darker and darker territory, with Gyllenhaal navigating a dialogue rich both in intensity and midnight-black humor. The climax of the film is a gorgeous, white-knuckled chase through the city that reveals both the depths of Bloom's immorality and the height of Gyllenhaal's talent.

I liked this look for Demolition.

Being filmed in New York means that we'll have many pictures from the filming.

UV, I have no hopes for the Oscars. I don't think Open Road will campaign and not him because of the play. But it was a surprised to not see the name Jake on an very early list. But it's okay.

Didn't anyone else noticed that Feinberg's Oscar nominations for lead actor were all bio roles except for Birdman? And his second list was also a lot of bios.

Was it that way last year?

Jess, well, the Academy loves biographies and adaptations. This year four of the nominated actors were from real stories, just Bruce Dern had a original character.

This is his first list. Too early IMO. His first forecast from the last year:

Actually his predictions weren't that far off. I still hope Jake will be nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. And I think he might have a good shot at a Golden Globe nomination for "Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical" for "Demolition" next year.

Jess said...

I disagree about his predictions from last year, not impressive to me.
God bless you Hagen..........But

Based on the NC being a dark comedy,I believe Jake has a really chance of being nominated for a Golden Globe Best Actor in a Comedy Musical for Nightcrawler. Why wait for Demolition.

Jess said...

I will say that Jake's and the film's chances at an Awards season I believe depends on how well Nightcrawler does at the box office.

As for the Spirit Awards, there seems to be as much competition there this year as with bigger films. Even independent films released earlier are viable competition for acting and film.

Hagen said...

I disagree about his predictions from last year, not impressive to me.

His track record isn't impressive; it's just that the field of potential nominees narrows down early on.

Based on the NC being a dark comedy,I believe Jake has a really chance of being nominated for a Golden Globe Best Actor in a Comedy Musical for Nightcrawler.

Hm, I'm not sure if HFPA would go along with that classification.

As for the Spirit Awards, there seems to be as much competition there this year as with bigger films.

Well, yes. On the other hand movies like "The Theory of Everything", "Unbroken" or "American Sniper" aren't eligible for the ISA's.

Jess said...

Well we shall see, what was that movie with Jolie and Depp that looked nothing like a comedy or musical but was nominated anyway.

UltraViolet said...

Really cool results for NC and Jake in the Indiewire critic's poll. Jake is the #2 lead performance (after Nina Hoss in Phoenix). NC also comes in second to Phoenix in the feature category. And Gilroy wins for best debut.

Nice job!

VF asked a bunch of celebs about movies that make them cry. Spoiler alert for Jake's very brief blip: Boyhood.

UltraViolet said...

It will really suck if Jake doesn't even get an Indie Spirit nomination! I swore I wouldn't spend another fall worrying about awards season, but here we are again!

BlueJean said...

So much news! Never enough time, never enough... ;)

bobbyanna said...

I know, UV. I expected some Independent Spirit love or GG love for other Jake movies and it never materialized. EoW and SC specifically. Who knows! : /

But I am delighted the critics poll acknowledged him. That will keep the buzz going, until the opening in October.

Honestly, all the things we talk about here: the distribution, the marketing, etc. the financing, getting a decent budget, so much is tied to how he's perceived. Of course box office counts, but that depends on marketing and distribution, so it's a catch 22.

Jake has earned his place and I want to see him acknowledged by his peers. Hopefully, the Feinberg predictions will goose his standing in the coming weeks.

bobbyanna said...

I gess it's too much to hope that since Harvey Weinstein is behind Southpaw, it would be nice if he would be supportive of a nomination, just to enhance Jake's value next year, even though I know Harvey has another candidate to promote this year.

David Fincher

On Zodiac I had a conversation with Jake, and I said, “I guarantee I’m going to make a good movie out of this. You can decide if you want to be the weakest thing in it, or you can decide if you want to show up.” Downey had an interesting relationship with Jake on that movie. I think he felt it was his job to point out how difficult it is to be a 24-year-old actor with a lot of eyes and expectations on you. In spite of all the drama about whether we were allowing Jake to be the best version of himself because we were expecting so many iterations of his performance, to an extent I also felt that way about him. I also empathized with the wizened Downey looking back at himself in his Less Than Zero days and wanting a more nurturing influence for Jake.

UltraViolet said...

Yeah, Fincher. Still an asshole.

There's a little more:

PLAYBOY: So far your Gone Girl cast has been mum, but other stars you’ve worked with, such as Daniel Craig, Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal, have spoken about the experience as being tough but worth it, with you demanding many retakes of the same scene.
FINCHER: If you didn’t get hugged enough as a kid, you won’t find what you’re looking for from me. That’s not my gig and I’m not attuned to it. On Zodiac I had a conversation with Jake, and I said, “I guarantee I’m going to make a good movie out of this. You can decide if you want to be the weakest thing in it, or you can decide if you want to show up.” Downey had an interesting relationship with Jake on that movie. I also empathized with the wizened Downey looking back at himself in his Less Than Zero days and wanting a more nurturing influence for Jake.

PLAYBOY: Both Downey’s and Gyllenhaal’s complaints were about reshooting scenes over and over. What do you get on take 11, say, that you don’t on take five?
FINCHER: Part of the promise when I work with actors is that we may be on take 11 and I’ll say, “We certainly have a version that we can put in the movie that will make us all happy. But I want to do seven more and continue to push this idea. Let’s see where it goes.” Now, I may go back to them after those seven takes and say, “It was a complete fucking waste of effort, but I had to try because I feel there’s something to be mined from this.” That’s a lot of extra work for an actor, and sometimes it pushes them out of their comfort zone. In some cases they’re not getting paid as much as they would on another movie. I go out on a limb, and people work harder for me than they do for other people. But I want them to be happy with the fact that we were able to do something singular, something unlike anything else in their or my filmography.

I like Fincher's films, I think he has a really good eye, but sometimes he seems a tiny bit arrogant. Maybe it's true that Jake was a bit off in the moment they were filming Zodiac with all the fuss around Brokeback Mountain and all that stuff, but he was not the only actor to complain about David's methods, Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo did also, even if Mark was kissing David's ass afterwards (I love him anyway). I don't understand why everyone acts like Jake was being a spoiled kid. I'm not defending him for the sake of it, he was really young and I guess all that sudden attention probably affected him. He has matured a lot since then as a man an as an actor but I'm not sure if Fincher is the kind of director he would like to work with right now.

Btw, I'm so happy about all this positive reactions for Nightcrawler, but sadly I don't think Jake will get a nom, that category was already packed long before… which is a shame considering we haven't seen most of the films yet. But I'm glad for all the attention his performance is getting. Cant' really wait to see this film.

Hagen said...

Based on Jake's comments in interviews I don't think Jake and David Fincher would fit together better now than they did back in 2005. Jake wants to work with directors who believe in his creative instincts. The process is more important for him than the result, read: Fincher's movies might be fine, but if the work on set sucks, it's just not worth it. And reportedly it sucks for most actors in leading roles who work with Fincher, even if they're more discreet than Jake. I'm pretty sure that both of them have closed that chapter for good.

Office of Nancy Pelosi said...

As much as I loved Zodiac I don't think I would want to see Jake and Fincher to work together again. As you pointed out Hagen and Pirulita Jake has grown as an an actor since then and is looking and working on projects that reflect that.
I'm really excited about all the praise Jake is receiving for Nightcrawler but the best actor field is really crowded.

bobbyanna said...

Asshole is a understatement, UV.
It even seemed as if he resented Robert being nurturing or protective of Jake. Funny. I wonder if he treats Brad Pitt or Ben Affleck with the same condescension.

Jake knows the director is in charge, but he also sees filmmaking as collaborative with his directors, and Fincher seems to need more than anything, to make sure everyone knows who's in charge.

I can understand doing 11 takes for a scene to "explore" an idea, but when you do 50-70 takes, which Fincher did with both Robert & Jake, IMO that's not about making a movie.

There's something else going on that's almost abusive. "I'm doing this because I can," as if he is trying to break his actors.

I saw evidence that Jake & Fincher had patched things up and were friendly after Zodiac, but I agree he isn't the kind of director that Jake, at 33-34 would work well with.

On another subject, I didn't realize Jean Marc Vallee directed The Young Victoria. I love that movie!

I am not in a foreign country but I think some of the action scenes would resonate with a foreign audience and I think the last trailer really help to sell the movie. A clear storyline in my opinion is a plus and the trailer helps define the story line. I came across some amateur reviews of the last NC trailer on Youtube and one reviewer has commented that the most recent trailer sold him on the movie because he was not sure what the movie was about before. The guy thought Jake's character was a murderer who created news stories for his career.

I watched about 5 reviews of the trailer and 4 were guys and the way their eyes lit up for the car chase scene was rather amusing.

UltraViolet said...

We can all be defensive about Jake but I think the complaints are legitimate in the Fincher case. The guy is an arrogant, controlling ass, it seems. Many other people complained, and Jake is unfairly singled out for it.

Jake is partly to blame for backing down from his valid statements and trying to make peace with Fincher.

No idea how they each really feel. I could see Jake working for him again, though.

Jess said...

Has Fincher ever work with a male lead again in any film?

I had a response to Bobbyanna's question but it disappeared.

Hagen said...

Do you think Nightcrawler will resonate with foreign audiences?
It's a tough market for low-budget American movies. "Nightcrawler" will not only have to compete against other American movies, but also against domestic and other European films. (This year the most successful movie at the box office in Germany is a French comedy.) I think the topic of "Nightcrawler" works fine internationally, but it could be crowded out by other films.

I wonder if he treats Brad Pitt or Ben Affleck with the same condescension.
There were reports that Affleck freaked out on the set of "Gone Girl" when he had to repeat a scene over and over again. Brad Pitt might be an exception; I don't know.

Has Fincher ever work with a male lead again in any film?
With Brad Pitt.

The "Demolition" logo looks cool.

Piruleta said...

I have a question for those of you in other countries. Do you think Nightcrawler will resonate with foreign audiences?

I agree with Hagen, the topic of the movie is appealing but it will depend on the promotion. For example, here in Spain the trailers were received with enthusiasm but mostly by cinephiles, the general audience probably doesn't even know this film exists. I can see Nightcrawler having a similar success to Drive, I have the feeling it has the potential to become a new classic :)

BlueJean said...

"I have a question for those of you in other countries. Do you think Nightcrawler will resonate with foreign audiences?"

Over here in The Netherlands, Jake is well known with 'cinephiles'. Many think he's on a roll with his career right now, ever since 'Source Code'. So yeah, those who respect him are looking forward to NC.

The general public? I have no idea... :/

bobbyanna said...

Thank you for your responses. I should have been more specific because I was most concerned about whether the subject of the film would have any relevancy to foreign audiences.

The idea of "nightcrawlers," freelancers chasing police scanners and filming raw footage of crime scenes. There is something about it, culturally, that is very "American" so I wondered. : )

I remember End of Watch didn't do so well in some places because it was so specific to South Central L.A.futlera

bobbyanna said...

Fincher did "Seven," "Fight Club," and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" with Brad Pitt.

Piruleta said...

Oh I see what you mean, It's true "Nightcrawlers" are more american, but I think the message of the movie is familiar with any other culture, I mean the fact that we all have almost become spectators of others tragedies and we don't seem affected by it. So yeah, I think the subject of the film is interesting for everyone.

NC is very L.A. centric like EOW was so I was thinking that it may not translate overseas but the subject of journalism and the downward turn in ethics will find an audience.

Fincher Is a jackass and I doubt that he will be looking for Jake to star in his next movie.

bobbyanna said...

Fincher almost sounded defensive in the Playboy interview.“I guarantee I’m going to make a good movie out of this. You can decide if you want to be the weakest thing in it, or you can decide if you want to show up."

Zodiac certainly found it's audience, but it was never as popular as some of Fincher's other movies. I wonder of he's sensitive about that. The comment is insulting to come out now when both of them are promoting new movies over something that happened more than 8 yrs. ago.

The very idea of Jake not "being present" or "showing up" is absurd and insulting. Given Fincher's style of directing, it's impossible to separate the actor's performance from the director's shortcomings when I movie doesn't live up to it's expectations. Fincher had a great cast to work with, and Jake played Graysmith exactly the way Fincher wanted him to.

Monica said...

The very idea of Jake not "being present" or "showing up" is absurd and insulting.

Yeah. I was thinking about it like "hey do not blame me if he is the weakest part of the film". There are people out there who think that Jake is the weakest part of the film.

I wonder if Jake already knows about this interview.

Jess said...

"I wonder if Jake already knows about this interview."

Really I always see nothing but positive comments about Jake in Zodiac from people online who have found the film and realize what a good actor Jake really is, I see most comments about the acting related to Jake and Mark, rarely in reference to Downey JR.

The comment in my opinion was not to infer that Jake was the weakest link but an "excuse" to why Fincher was so hard on Jake.

I think secretly Jake got under Fincher's skin and it is driving the narcissist crazy.

bobbyanna said...

Fincher had a sentimental attachment to Zodiac story, and it didn't achieve the success he hoped it would. He's taking a cheap, thinly veiled shot at Jake. He has less to lose by criticizing Jake. Jake's people aren't going to challenge him, and Jake doesn't have the box office clout to matter. But as I said before,
"Given Fincher's style of directing, it's impossible to separate the actor's performance from the director's shortcomings when I movie doesn't live up to it's expectations"

If you read the rest of his interview he makes comments about the type of people he doesn't like, etc. and from a personality perspective I can see how he wouldn't get along with Jake. Fincher admits he is mean and vindictive. He clearly hasn't put Zodiac's failings behind him. He just isn't man enough to own them.

Jess said...

"Fincher admits he is mean and vindictive"

Piruleta said...

Fincher took some unfair and cheap potshots at Jake. I think he resented the fact that Jake had BBM promotion to do which directly interfered with Zodiac filming. Was it the Golden Globes he wouldn't let Jake attend that year?

Jess said...

Well so much for the two months of promotion after the TIFF premiere.

That Facebook page is sad and not much traffic.

Monica said...

Jess, from time to time I read negative comments about the performance of jake in zodiac. It makes me so :(

Rachel, I don't think that's it, because he knew that Jake would promote Brokeback Mountain around the filming of Zodiac. In fact, Jake was promoting Brokeback and Jarhead. These things are scheduled before, of course the awards season may have changed some things, but I don't think it was the main reason. And if I'm not wrong, Fincher was working on the pre-production of Benjamin Button while filming Zodiac.

I think they just didn't get along.

Bobbyana, I think Fincher was disappointed with the studio that changed the release date to March, the marketing wasn't good...
I believe that is why he is now working in marketing of his films. You can imagine how it would be Zodiac today with Fincher taking control of everything?

UltraViolet said...

Oh, Fincher definitely held the awards hoopla against Jake. He prevented Jake from going to the Golden Globes, leading many to say that Jake didn't attend because he wasn't nominated. Fincher refers to it on the Zodiac commentary track.

He's just a selfish prick. It wasn't his movie, so he didn't care about the awards.

There are a lot of people who think Jake is the weak link in Zodiac, but a lot of people think he's really good.

Jess, I'm disappointed by the follow-up NC promotion, or lack thereof, as well.

Another TIFF interview.

I think Denis has a lot of competition now lol. I do believe Dan loves or at least likes Jake a lot and Antoine gushes over him and the chemistry between Jake and Jean Marc Vallee seems genuine at TIFF.

Piruleta said...

who cares about David Fincher anyway!

Haha, well, I do care because Fincher is a really well known and respected director, so his opinion about the actors he works with is kind of relevant. But, has others have said, this happened 8 years ago although he was asked directly about it.

When I say I prefer to see him work with Denis again is because I really think Denis is a refreshing and talented director, I can't wait to see his next projects and of course I would love to see him and Jake together again, they are an interesting match.

Great breakfast chat with Jake Gyllenhaal this morning. Dude is driven lately. It's exciting to see him so energized by the work.

@kristapley What did Jake eat?

Kristopher Tapley ‏@kristapley 9h
@katerbland He "ate" tea. I ate a croissant. That actually probably says it all.

Kate Erbland ‏@katerbland 9h
@kristapley Tea is interesting. Hot, I assume? Should have figured he was a tea guy. (I would have had a croissant, too.)

Mike Ryan ‏@mikeryan 8h
@kristapley @katerbland That's not much of a breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day. You both need your strength.

Funny, lol. Jake looked so happy, young and relaxed. Getting that house on the market just in time for me. I am looking for new house but I wonder if he would negotiate. Let's say cut 3 million dollar reduction. It's not unreasonable since he longer comes with the house.

Tyrese shared a Southpaw photo. Jake is not in the photo but this is the caption:

We finally did it - shout to one of our new legends director Antwoine Fouqua ( Training Day and The Equalizer).. and my mentor Forest Whitaker - the scenes I did with Jake Gyllenhaal is gonna shock a few folks! One of my most challenging roles to date - #SouthPaw #Excited

And yes, there are the requisite Brokeback jokes among the 1000 comments.

This is a good interview from TIFF. I think this woman has done the Twitter questions angle before. Stay away if you don't want to hear "All Too Well" played over the whole thing.

Maybe Thompson is implying a romance between Rachel and Jake? Rachel was seen on set at Demolition and then in Los Angeles within days.

Why she did it? Ridiculous. I'll pass. If the music was at least good...

She is not implying romance because Anne Thompson is not celebrity gossip. I think she saw Rachel and was happy with it.

I think it's just a coincidence that they were in the same hotel.

Loved the article by the NME blogger, but I always feel bad when Source Code is overlooked. I loved Jake's work in that movie, especially the scenes in the pod.
I still get teary-eyed when I watch his scenes with Vera Farmiga. "Am I dead?"

And honestly, while Donnie Darko is classic, getting there from October Sky really demonstrates his gifts. He was superb in October Sky.

I'm really happy he's being recognized, and I definitely want to see him be acknowledged by his peers, too.

Sorry for being kinda AWOL, I can't keep up with Jake's insanely hectic schedule, which makes me sad (for myself) and extremely happy for Jake.
Did I say how smitten I am by his looks for Demolition? :-)

I picked-up some tweets, links, photos, but will check if they weren't already discussed here.

For now, a newly fresh video interview from Anne Thompson, the one she tweeted about. Nice introduction and very detailed description of Jake's work in the past few years.

http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/watch-nightcrawler-star-jake-gyllenhaal-looks-into-eyes-of-coyote-20140924

One dark horse awards candidate to emerge from the Toronto Film Festival is Dan Gilroy's Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle "Nightcrawler". Watch my video interview with the busy actor, who is heading for Broadway--and a possible second Oscar nomination.

Jess said...

" Fuqua keeps bringing Jake in all conversations :-)"

I wonder how often the interviewer brings up Fuqua's next projects and Jake.

Hot Mess said...

Hi, Jess! I don't know, but he seems eager to talk about Jake :-)

Fuqua says he didn't want to direct Prisoners because he has kids, while Denis brought his kids to the set! Different strokes for different folks.
Questions are: when was Fuqua set to direct Prisoners and why wasn't it mentioned before? He suggested Jake should play Keller Dover? I kinda love the irony that Jake could have been involved in Prisoners before Denis, before Hugh. Goes to prove how many variations projects go through in Hollywood.
...One day you may end up with Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. Ouch!

------------------

Don't know if this has been brought up, but Scott Feinberg did put Jake on his second list in "Possibilities":

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/feinberg-forecast-race-takes-shape-733235

His predictions are puzzling though; he considers frontrunners actors from movies no one has watched yet.

From his blog:

http://scottfeinberg.com/genre-films-can-break-the-oscar-norm

Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance as a sleazy freelance TV reporter determined to go to any length in search of crime footage in Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler could get him “recognized as one of the most daring actors working in Hollywood today” and has been called some of the “best work of his career.” With this type of praise, award contention usually follows, but historically speaking, “genre films” don’t fare well at the Oscars. It’s not impossible for films that deviate from the Oscar norm — biopics, period pieces or dramas — to secure Oscar nominations for the actors involved, but looking back through the years, from 2000 to the present, shows that these films constitute a lower percentage of overall nominees.

Monica said...

He looks great. I think it will become my favorite look of all his movies.

he considers frontrunners actors from movies no one has watched yet.

That's where is the fun. Most of the time he makes the list with what he's hearing about the films, which one is the kind of movie that the Academy will like ... inherent vice is low on the list, because the initial word is that it is not a movie that Oscar will like, it will divide,

He is very good.

Tapley is also very good: In Contention

I'd be happy just with a nomination.

Today I bought Into Thin Air, I want to know more about Everest. : D

UltraViolet said...

BJD, that is like a line from EoW!

Bobbyanna, the NME article was a little off. But Ann Thompson mentioned SC :)

Hagen, those photos were so much fun. IHJ has even more now, but it was great to see them earlier. He really does look good. Eyeroll at Lainey's attempt to inject drama/misleading with the title.

Hot Mess, you've come back with a vengeance! Great link for the set design blogger. The Prisoners/Fuqua story makes no sense from what we've heard. If true, it puts an interesting spin on things.

The more I hear about all the biopics this fall, the sadder I get for Jake's awards chances.

Love the Thompson interview. I might make a new post with it.

UltraViolet said...

I might read it, too, Monica. Haven't decided yet.

The set design photos and the JFK photos give us an interesting glimpse into Demolition. I've avoided any spoilers so none of it makes any sense to me. But that's okay.

"Southpaw, we're editing that now and I'm excited. Jake Gyllenhaal, I think he's on the rise, and he's intense. We completely changed him into a championship boxer. It's a heartfelt drama about him and his daughter. It's really powerful."

fuqua really love Jake

Piruleta said...

"His predictions are puzzling though; he considers frontrunners actors from movies no one has watched yet."

This really pisses me off and is even worse when we keep reading all of these articles saying how Jake should be nominated but that he has no chance. However, they list actors from movies no one has seen yet ignoring others that have been released earlier. Although I think what really gets on my nerves the most is seeing Bradley Cooper listed once again. Maybe he deserves it this year but his past two nominations were a joke.

bobbyanna said...

"I'd be happy just with a nomination." Oh, yes, Monica! So will I.

I'm sort of sitting on the fence about Into Thin Air. part of me really wants to read it.

I LOVE the Anne Thompson interview! Sometimes, when Jake is doing press for his movies, he seems "On" and there's a forced quality, but here he seems so relaxed, and he's not trying so hard to be funny or entertaining.

Instead, with Thompson, he comes across as thoughtful, intelligent and very authentic. This is the Jake I really love to see. The other is entertaining, but this was a real conversation. I enjoyed it very much.

Jake set to appear in Theater of War at BAM on Sunday:

Jake Gyllenhaal, Reg E. Cathey, Frances McDormand, and David Strathairn perform a dramatic reading of scenes from Sophocles’ Ajax and Philoctetes, in conjunction with this season’s presentation of Basetrack, followed by a discussion about the visible and invisible wounds of war.

Theater of War is an innovative public health project that presents powerful dramatic readings as a catalyst for town hall discussions in military communities about combat and deployment-related stress, psychological injury, alcohol and substance abuse, suicide, and the impact of military service on families and communities. For the past five years, this groundbreaking theater project has been used to open up crucial dialogue, break down stigmas, and encourage health-seeking behavior on military installations worldwide for more than 50,000 service members, veterans, and their families—and has also been presented to mixed audiences to help bridge the growing divide between military and civilian communities.

He will probably be in the minority critics as I understand a preview was shown to a bunch of major critics and it was called Ben Affleck best acting performance ever which supposed is possible. And of course Fincher can do no wrong, again keeping my lips zipped. The movie is being lauded as Oscar worthy which is no surprise (biting my tongue).

Yes, he's in the minority, but I agree with one of the things he said about the film on twitter that is what I felt after reading the book.

Oh, I bet the Gone Girl gang is definitely going to be in the Awards season hunt, for sure. I think the combination of Fincher, and Ben Affleck is pretty powerful. Reese Witherspoon is producing, and she has the clout of CAA behind her.

So there's Jake, Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbach, Probably Steve Carrell from Foxcatcher, and Michael Keaton is getting a lot of buzz. Put Ben Affleck in the group and then there's Jeremy Renner's movie, Brad Pitt's movie, Fury, and Unbroken all not yet out.

Lots of choices for supporting actors too, but I'd bet Neil Patrick Harris generates some interest.

Monica, here's Edgar Wright's tweet. He really liked Jake

"Nightcrawler is King Of Comedy for the TMZ age. A fantastic LA movie with a scary good Jake Gyllenhaal. Thanks #BeyondFest & @yogoldsmith"

This does not like like Rachel McAdams to me at all.

Glad Nightcrawler is getting a lot of great press.

It is definitely Rachel McAdams, there was some tweet (copied above) she has been seen on the Demolition set earlier in WTC as well.

As for awards I would say that for Southpaw he has more chances, if Weinstein will manage to relase it in December however, then voices for nominations can be split out and he will not get any. Boxing dramas are very successful on Academy awards (Ali, Raging Bull, Fighter). If SP is not going to be released in December though, then they`d need to wait another year to be noticed by Academy.

From twitter:

Jay- Z and Beyonce at #GlobalCitizenFestival

We were apparently right next to Jake Gyllenhall side stage. But I'm dumb & didnt realize.

Southpaw will debut next year, anon.

Awwww, Attticus is proud I am sure. BTW I believe Naomi Watts was on set of Demolition and she (the blonde lead actress of the movie who often wears her hair up) lives in NYC.

A suggestion perhaps to inquiring minds you could always email the blogger about the mystery blonde.

That is definitely Rachel, and these photos confirm the rumours we had a few weeks ago of Rachel being on set with Jake.

"Nightcrawler" will be screened at the Rome Film Festival (October 16th to 25th). The movie seems to work fine internationally and gets very strong reviews from German critics, for example from Filmstarts.de (5 out of 5 stars) and Programmkino.de ("an oustanding movie").

Thanks Hagen! That's good to know.

Some quotes from Gylroy, nothing exactly new but interesting nonetheless:

“The way we approached the film in a meta sense was we approached it as a success story,” Gilroy said. “So once we understood that and we realized we weren’t going to apply any moral filter to it, Jake came up with the idea in discussing the symbol of the character, of a nocturnal animal who would come down out of the woods at night and feed. The image that we came up with living in Los Angeles was of a coyote.”

“Jake very quickly decided he was going to try to lose weight. We never had a set goal of how much weight he’s going to lose, but over a period of 10 weeks before shooting, he lost about 28 pounds. It was a little nerve wracking, one, to see him that way. It all makes sense now, but the first time you see Jake in dailies when he looks like that, it was a little bit shocking and unnerving. I was ready to go for it in a second, but the other unnerving thing was once you start shooting, you’re committed to the look. For Jake that meant running or biking 15 miles a day and eating kale, then coming to the set and doing 18 hour days. For him it was extraordinarily physically demanding as well as obviously creatively demanding.”

“What I liked about the longer hair, given also the gaunt look, is it gave him a very feral quality. It was great because he could do things with his hair. He could slick it back in the Mexican restaurant and then it would fall down and he’d look like Crispin Glover with this weird thing coming up here. Then he could push it off to the side, so it gave him a lot of different looks.”

“I started off in journalism so I’ve always been interested in journalism, but the news element for this story particularly came when I discovered this world of stringers/nightcrawlers in Los Angeles. When I realized that just every night from 10 to 6 there was a group of a dozen maniacs who go out and drive 100 miles and hour with 15 scanners going. Automatically in my research I understood that they were really in the coal mine feeding this fire that these new organizations do. Michael Moore brought this up I think really vividly in Bowling for Columbine, the idea of news purveying fear in order to generate ratings. And looking at the statistics of how much is devoted to crime and how much is devoted to actual news. It just became more and more interesting the more I looked into it.”

I wonder if Jake will have time to go to Rome. Lots of tweets about NC from London critic screenings today, as well as some from the Zurich Film Festival. A couple of negatives but mostly glowing.

Piruleta, there was some great stuff in there from Gilroy. Thanks for posting. I might transfer that to the new post. It includes the photo Bobbyanna posted, as well as some others.

Thanks to Rachel McAdams forum for settling the photo issue :)

Jess, the Page Six item was interesting. I guess we'll find out from puppy sightings if Jake has really moved. I do wish someone could snag a photo of the dog.

Tickets on sale. Already snagged a pair :)

New post.
