Catching up, throwing back

New photos of Jake in NYC on Thursday. Look at those bruised knuckles!

#TBT long ago and just recently. Some lingering Madrid interviews first. This one has anteresting anecdote about the mirror scene from Enemy:

Jake on MSN ES:

Another video interview here, with some slightly different answers :)

Going a little further back, from Toronto in January:

Not sure if this got lost in the comments. Someone posted it, and it's a cute clip. Although you kind of want to just tell Jake to answer the question!

And some social media Jake TNTs:

And we can't leave this one out - all the way back to the '90s!

"Can't speak for Hagen, but I don't have any interest in boxing or boxing movies. So Jake doing one is kind of a drag. But I think it means he'll have to shave, so I'm looking on the bright side :)"

I just have to comment here because I think there is a misconception about the movie, boxing is the backdrop of the script. The story is the father and child relationship. Maybe if you go back and do research on the script and what it has taken to get this film made you would stop looking at it as a boxing film or maybe don't and you will be pleasantly surprised.

UltraViolet said...

I have no interest in researching the script. If there isn't too much boxing in the movie, I'' be grateful.

I keep forgetting to post this sort of spoilery article from THR a few weeks ago:

'He's making his first film in English, I have to be in this film,' " Gadon says of her thought process. "So I tracked the project, and this was before even Jake was attached and they were looking at potential leads. … Once they had settled on Jake, I basically badgered them (laughs) to audition me, and I auditioned with Jake and I got the role, thankfully."

While filming, Gadon and Gyllenhaal had a lot of freedom, she tells THR.

For the interior scenes between Jake and I, [Villeneuve] would write the scenes, and we could move anywhere we wanted to in the scene," she explains. "We could improv. We could, you know, do what we wanted to. And, I mean, of course he created boundaries and there was a structure and we talked extensively about scenes, but it was very open. … Working with Jake was amazing, too. He just keeps you on your toes and keeps teasing out a scene, and he's just fearless about where he will take it."

I haven't heard her talk about Jake too much. There was another interview that I forgot to link, where she discussed working with Jake and Denis. I hope to find it again.

I have a whole list of Spanish Jake interviews. He really did a lot pf press when he was there.

Considering Jake is already preparing Southpaw, do we assumed that Everest filming has ended?

Same here!

Those are very nice words from Sarah Gadon about Jake.

Do we assume that Everest filming has ended?

So they're still filming Everest. I wonder if the sighting on the flight means that Jake went to London for the filming, could justify why he's still with this look.

I don't know if it's true: source code sequel

UltraViolet said...

Wow, I remember really wanting a Source Code sequel when it came out. There's definitely room for one. But I'd want the whole team back in place.

If he did leave the city, it's a shame Jake couldn't be in town for the Edible Schoolyard benefit. His name wasn't on the program earlier today when I checked.

I can't remember where I saw this quote but it made me wistful. One of the producers of "Into The Woods" described it as "the Avengers of musicals."

Lots of flak for why two white guys are kicking off a salute to James Baldwin. Will be interesting to see if that event gets any other participants.

The biggest surprise is Jake, since the other is a literary critic, writer ...
Maybe Jake is trying to adapt one of the books for the big screen? or he will produce a documentary about James?

Chica said...

Wow! For years I've heard about Jake and the Band Hole Shot and finally a photo! Thanks UV, he was so young.

I thought he was done filming Everest?
Baldwin is one of my favorite authors.
I can see some head scratching over two white guys doing the tribute. Lots of African-American NY based actors/writers, etc that I thought would
Participate. As you said UV, we will see if anyone else will be added. Maybe it's
Because he attended Columbia as did his Mom and Maggie.I think he has/had an uncle that tought there as well.

bobbyanna said...

I love James Baldwin, too, Chica. I read Another Country a lonnnng time ago, but the choice of Jake is a surprise. Maybe it's one of his favorite books. It will certainly expose Baldwin's work to a wider audience if people come because Jake's involved, and that's a good thing. : )

I think Naomi's ex husband, Eric Foner is also still associated with the University. He's an historian who specializes in African American studies.

So, there sure are some family connections to Columbia.

Possible reason for Jake still keeping the long hair/beard look: "Everest" is still shooting. Principal photography in London, second unit in Nepal. The scary irony? The second crew shooting a movie about 1996 Everest disaster just survived today the deadliest avanlache on Everest.

Variety reports here:

The crew working on location for the Cross Creek Pictures and Walden Media film “Everest” is safe from its position at basecamp, after a deadly avalanche swept down a climbing route on the Nepalese mountain. All nine people in the second unit crew, which consists of professional hikers and cameramen, will remain on schedule to continue acclimating with plans to summit the mountain early next month. The avalanche killed 12 Nepalese guides, and has left four missing in the deadliest disaster on the world’s highest peak.
Previously, the worst recorded disaster on Everest was a fierce blizzard on May 11, 1996, which caused the deaths of eight climbers, including famous mountaineer Rob Hall, who was later memorialized in the Jon Krakauer book “Into Thin Air.”
“Everest,” which will be released by Universal on Sept. 18, 2015, details that disaster and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, John Hawkes, Emily Watson and Josh Brolin.

Principal photography on “Everest” is still on schedule in London. The majority of the mountain scenes have already been shot in the Alps, however Cross Creek and Walden had set aside $1 million from the $65 million production budget for a team to shoot additional summit and location shots on the actual mountain.

Notice the photo Variety chose is of Jake. No matter who will be featured more on screen (probably Clarke), my gut tells me they'll primarily use Jake for promotion.

Deadline says "principal photography on the film is nearly over and they are finishing in Pinewood in England", also naming Jake first and tagging the report "Everest, Jake Gyllenhaal, Mount Everest Avalanche".

For what is worth, he may be contractually obligated to keep the same look until Everest wraps. Happens with studio movies shooting for months in a row, see LOTR and Hobbit. Even if an actor wraps his part he may be needed later for pick-up scenes or re-shoots. Fortunately those guys wore wigs.
That's not to say, when Everest wraps he will get a haircut. A shave yes, but you never know what crazy hairstyle he's planning for Billy in Southpaw. Remember James Franco in Spring Breakers? Lets hope Jake doesn't.

I have no explanation for the neon jacket though. Lost a bet maybe?LOL

He's pretty tall...maybe 5'11" or 6'. Of course I'm short so everyone looks tall to me...lol

Love it, love it, love it. But I had read the book, which made it less confusing :) I thought Sarah Gadon was excellent, too! Her last scenes with Jake (Adam) are so delicate...

MUST go see it at the cinema as well to get the total experience! It'll premiere here at 29th May.

It's a shame they got the American distribution. Not sure the international distribution is going any better.

Most likely "Enemy" will be a niche release just about everywhere. And that's OK. I don't blame A24 or any other distributor for that. But A24 (and its partner companies) do a lousy job with the home media release. And there's no doubt that other distributors will do better than that.

Yesterday I watched "Enemy" online (with Romanian subtitles) ;-)
Have you already watched this analysis?

UltraViolet said...

Hagen, any distributor that can't secure a Boston theater for a movie has not, IMO, done a good job distributing the movie. Who knows what other cities it never played in?

Boston is not a market that can't handle niche films.

A24 has now said there will be a Blu-ray release:

And yes we did spend time making an image of Jake Gyllenhaal recognizing his look-alike in the iTunes store.

Our sexy spidery doppelgänger thriller ENEMY is now available at @iTunesMovies: http://bit.ly/ENFB1

And for the purists, a blu ray is also in the works so put down your fists!

OK, that sucks. There will be similar problems in Germany for sure. The German distributor is a tiny company, though I doubt that other arthouse distributors would do a significantly better job.

The "Enemy" blu-ray might get a different cover:

Jesse Judd ‏@Jester206
@A24Films Good news. Wish you were using the original yellow poster as the cover art though. Much better than the pre order cover imo

A24 ‏@A24Films
@Jester206 how do you know we aren't?

I still think that A24 looks very amateurish. It would be have been wiser, if A24 had worked out its plans for the home media release, before it makes any announcements.

Another analysis here, if you haven't seen it:

Overall it's a very good analysis, but "Enemy" isn't meant to be a schizophrenia / mental illness story:

NY Daily News: Gyllenhaal admits that his reading of the story led him to believe that Adam and Anthony are really the same person. But the director disagreed, insisting they are as they appear in the movie, two different people.

BlueJean said...

"Gyllenhaal admits that his reading of the story led him to believe that Adam and Anthony are really the same person. But the director disagreed, insisting they are as they appear in the movie, two different people."

Well - that's great... now I'm confused again :(

I liked Adam. Felt sorry for him constantly. Anthony completely overpowered him. I was hoping, until the very end, that Adam would be able to have a better life with Helen. Maybe that's why I was so focused on Sarah Gadon's role. She was his only chance of a good life. Unfortunately... (not giving it away for those who haven't seen it yet).

Hagen said...

Well - that's great... now I'm confused again :(

Adam and Anthony nevertheless represent two sides of one personality.
(Villeneuve in Flickering Myth: A man who wants to leave his mistress and go back to his pregnant wife must confront his worst enemy: himself. Saramago decided, with all his ferocious humour, that this man should be in competition with another version of himself. In the dark spaces of his mind, Adam deals with an obsessive sexuality that cuts him off from intimacy and therefore any hope of true love. In order to be able to return to his regular life, his narcissistic side turns against the object of his sexual desire and destroys it.)

I suppose Villeneuve just wants to avoid that the story is reduced to some mental illness issues.

BlueJean said...

Thank you, Hagen. Does that mean that eventually everything will turn out alright for Adam? ;)

I need to go watch it again... now! :)

I just read a review on a Dutch movie site, where someone explained the movie really well, saying how excellent it was made, how wonderful Sarah Gadon was, the cinematography... and yet the movie didn't do anything for him. He gave it 2 stars out of 5 just because of Jake, he said.

I guess you either love it or you hate it.

Hagen said...

Warning: The discussion contains spoilers.

Does that mean that eventually everything will turn out alright for Adam? ;)

Well, maybe. ;-)
Jake in IndieWire: A real relationship with his wife, who is pregnant with their child. You know, that's to me what the movie was about. To me, that was the beautiful hopeful ending, that I thought, "Okay, that's where he's moving towards." Now the irony of it is, and I don't know if this is a spoiler, the end is cyclical because no matter what we commit to in what we decide we want our lives to be, there's always the biological, psychological aspects that will torment us at times. You know, there's always that snake. The snake doesn't go away, you know what I mean? It's always in the corner of the woods, you just need to know where it is, so you don't step on it again.

"Enemy" gets mostly favorable reviews in Germany, but apparently theaters are hesitant to include the film in their schedules.

"Enemy" will open in Brazil and Portugal during the FIFA World Cup. Oh well.

"Enemy" won't get a theatrical release in the Scandinavian countries. The DVD and Blu-ray will be available on August 20th, 2014.

BlueJean said...

By now, I'm beginning to wonder about Enemy's total Box Office results. I know it isn't supposed to be a big movie at all, but so far it's a very small one if you look at the results.

On Mojo, it says it ranks 19th (and last) amongst all of Jake's films since October Sky. Limited release, anyone?! :( Is it still playing in theatres in the USA? Guess not, since it's available on Amazon Instant Video.

UV, you mentioned it didn't do very well in Spain either. And now Hagen says it won't be released in the Scandinavian countries at all... overall, that's a VERY limited release worldwide so far, if you ask me :(

Hopefully, it'll be huge on DVD and Blu-ray!

Hagen said...

Theaters are still the best place to watch a movie. It's a shame that quite a few of Jake's fans won't get the opportunity to see "Enemy" on a big screen. It doesn't look likely that the film will open in theaters in France or Italy.

Last weekend "Enemy" was still shown in 15 theaters in North America. I guess the producers will get by financially. The film had a modest production budget of slightly less than 8 million Euro. Pathé International was able to sell the distribution rights for most countries. Nevertheless I agree that the commercial result of "Enemy" is rather underwhelming.

I know Anon, and he has all my respect for that, but I do not understand the venom and the obsession with his appearance

he's not just a pretty face, there is one of the greatest actors of his generation behind that beard and shabby clothes

eva said...

Well since you ask, I am a very average, but pleasant looking person. I even have a very pleasant looking boyfriend. But that isn't the point. I work in an office. I always try to look my best. Even when I am just running to the pharmacy for something, I make a point not to look sloppy.

But I am not an actor. So my physical appearance isn't part of my job, even if it is part of my presentation. I have been a fan of Jake for a long time. I will always admire his talent.

But talent isn't enough. His looks are an asset. He changes his appearance for his roles, but the role playing stops in real life and he can be himself. He has not always looked so bad like this during his downtime as I can recall.

There are a lot of very good looking actors out here who are also talented. It might even be considered a false modesty on his part to be so completely careless for such a long time.

FP said...

Ava His talent is enough for me

I'm glad you're a fan of Jake, but excuse me if I would, where were you when all of us were discussing EOW, the play "if there is"or Prisoners, studying and discussing scripts, finding every sighting, reporting every review?

If you read just a few comments above you can see an intelligent and interesting discussion about Enemy and its enigmatic meaning,
You can see the intuition and the research work of Monica, the lively and attentive interest of BJ, and the always punctual and perfect Hagen's contribution , but some how you feel the need to comment only about his looks

Anonymous said...

No actor is always made up 24/7 and if they are its because they have called the Paparazzi to come take their pictures. Yes Jake's face is part of his job but if you think producers, directors and writers cast actors based on paparazzi pictures then you fooling yourself.

Jake is as hot as they come but even his photo shoots are airbrushed (not much though). I'm sure Eva would kick her guy out of bed for Jake Gyllenhaal (disgusting as he is) if Jake blinked at her.

We all know Jake G is great looking and I am truly Hollywood knows it, Jake has nothing to prove as far as looks.

I confess, I 'm not really a fan of this new look, but looking at some recent pictures, I saw that when he is in a public event, he still looks great. He knows how to wear a suit, as we saw recently in Rome; in the Top Ten Festival he looks great too.
In today's photos, jake is in his free time, he is not working, and for some reason I don't know, he still can't shave his beard and cut this hair. He knows he is a public person, which can be photographed at any time, but I think he just doesn't care. And it's not like he's called paparazzi to be photographed.
His clothes look good as well as the jacket. Unfortunately the hair still looks greasy. ewww

"Just heard a whisper that Jake has been cast as Adam Trask in East of Eden."

Don't believe that's true if Lawrence is attached, Adam is the father of the main male character. I can't stand overrated Jennifer Lawrence.

bobbyanna said...

OMG, I hope it's true. That's great news. Adam is an important character in the book. He has quite a story line. It would be an important role. Adam's story is incredible. East of Eden is one of my favorite stories. LOL! Adam has a twin, too.

Hagen said...

I haven't read the book or watched the adaptation, but how old is Adam Trask? Raymond Massey who played Adam Trask in the adaptation from 1955 was 58 years old when the movie was released.

BlueJean said...

A re-make of a film that starred James Dean? Hmmm. Sounds highly unlikely to me. Maybe it's indeed a play?

Isn't Jake much too young to play Adam?
Hey, another Adam character! ;)

BlueJean said...

I just checked on Google.

Anon 2:53 - you could be right. It'll star Jennifer Lawrence. So it's a new movie adaptation.

Hadn't heard about it before. Interesting.

bobbyanna said...

The movie with James Dean, Julie Harris, and Raymond Massey was a shortened version of the book. In the movie, we join the Trask family when Adam is an older man with two grown sons.

But his own story, as written in the novel by John Steinbeck, is an incredible story, and it really is important to the plot of the movie.

I remember I felt cheated when I finally read the book, because the James Dean movie dealt with such a short period, and left so many questions unanswered.

I recall when this new version was first talked about, Ron Howard wanted to do it with Heath. I thought then and I still believe Michelle Williams would've been a perfect Cathy.

Both Cathy and Adam age in the story, and I can't picture Jennifer as a middle-aged Cathy. I think Jennifer will do OK as the young Cathy. It will be unlike anything she's ever done before, no joke.

I highly recommend the book, even if Jake doesn't end up doing it. But he would really be a perfect Adam. Absolutely. If you read the book I think you'll agree with me. It's hard to imagine Jake as Raymond Massey, but after reading the book, it'll be hard imagining Adam Trask as Raymond Massey. LOL! And as I said, Adam has twin brother. It's almost as if Enemy was an acting exercise for East of Eden.

Interesting Nailed story:

There was a Manhattan buyer’s screening yesterday for David O. Russell‘s abandoned Nailed, the financially-plagued political comedy, based on a screenplay co-written by novelist Kristin Gore (i.e., the second daughter of Al Gore) and Russell, that was haphazardly shot and never quite completed in ’08. Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tracy Morgan, Catherine Keener, Paul Reubens, Josh Brolin and Kirstie Alley costarred. Production was delayed or shut down four times due to the crew not getting paid. Blame was attributed to financial insuffficiency on the part of producers Ronald Tutor and David Bergstein of Capitol Films.

Yesterday’s screening (which was attended by reps for Magnolia among others) was presumably arranged by producer Kia Jam, who, according to a 2.5.14 story by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit, “cobbled together a cut that was test-screened in 2011 and submitted to the MPAA in November 2013.” Jam didn’t return Kit’s call asking for comment, and he didn’t return mine this morning either. I wrote Russell about the screening…zip. Magnolia wouldn’t say anything either.

And from James Marsden:

I’m not sure if this is a sore subject, but have you seen Nailed? [Nailed is a David O. Russell film that was shot before The Silver Linings Playbook starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel and Marsden; but when the production ran over budget and shooting stalled, Russell moved onto other projects, despite most of the film being completed.] Will anyone ever see it?

I did, not too long ago actually. It’s finally completed. I don’t know if it’ll ever be released. It’s tough because unfortunately financial problems and headlines were not great for the movie. As an actor you have to do your work and let it go. I don’t know the fate of the movie because we don’t have a say. But I got to forge a great relationship with David [O. Russell].

I read that it was missing a vital scene …

It was missing a key scene that we weren’t able to shoot because it was pretty technical and there were money issues. New producers managed to cut it together without it in a way that still works. We thought it was vital to the existence of the film, it’s part of the title after all, but they figured a way around it. I’m proud of work we did and it was great to work with David. But that’s six years, ago, now.

Interesting that he's seen the movie.

bobbyanna said...

Well I'd love a discussion about people's impressions of Enemy. So, I vote "yes." : )

Odd. Maybe they're trying to get Nailed in shape for a DVD release? I remember reading David O. Russell said he wanted nothing to do with it after the mess with the financing before they finished it.

And, I mean, of course he created boundaries and there was a structure and we talked extensively about scenes, but it was very open. … Working with Jake was amazing, too. He just keeps you on your toes and keeps teasing out a scene, and he's just fearless about where he will take it."

I have to say I hadn't heard of her before, but she's awesome in Enemy!

OK. SPOILERS! ;)

I'm still very confused about the mother, though... She was Adam's mom, but also Anthony's?! Her comments in the film (on the voicemail and during their meeting) were a total contradiction. And she bought him blueberries? He doesn't even like blueberries! Isabella Rossellini's only in the film for about two minutes, but she did a great job at confusing me ;)
