I think Anthony has a trauma from the accident he suffered with Mary. From there came the Adam .
I think Anthony used to be an actor, he had a relationship with Mary, used to go to sex clubs, but he needed to give up this way of life after Helen became pregnant .
Then he married and found herself caught in this web that is marriage, the responsibility of parenthood. But he met again with Mary and that's when she saw the mark on his finger. They fight and the accident occurs. The web in the car is that Anthony is caught again in the wedding .
That accident left a scar. In the scene with Anthony, Adam doesn't like to see the scar. He says he shouldn't have gone there .
We know that Mary also survived the crash, since his wife asks him if he is still seeing her.
In the end he begins to remember everything what happened, the accident with Mary, note that he returns home in a taxi (he no longer has the car that was destroyed in the accident), dream about it, he cries, reconciles with his wife, and when all seems well, he sees the key, so he decides to go to the club again (the cycle repeats, as he says in one of the classes).
Anthony was really a teacher or it's all in his mind? He seems to be wearing the same clothes as a teacher; the wife is surprised to see him at the university, and open mouth when he says he needs back to the class. I don't think she knows that there is other, but that Anthony has an issue. Especially when she tells Anthony that she thinks he knows what is happening.
Mary also seems to be wearing the same clothes in every scene with Adam, except the scene with Anthony.

Celebrity Gym Experience..after having breakfast at the pool next to Jake Gyllenhal (he was drinking water with lemon and having a green smoothie), we of course then crossed paths at the gym! I also believed Anthony and Adam were the same person, but you've given a credible analysis of the narrative and where the women fit in. Your explanation is definitely worth examining further. I really have to go back and watch the movie again. What about the spider? Does anyone have any ideas about it? It certainly seems to be an important conceit.

Monica, I struggle to wrap my mind around your interpretation.
I think Anthony has a trauma from the accident he suffered with Mary. From there came the Adam.
But Adam has already existed before that accident. Besides Jake (understandably) considers Adam as the main character who wants to return to his wife. When Adam and his wife reconcile, his alter ego and his mistress perish (I don't think they've survived the accident.)

You're talking about the personality of Adam, which seems like a good guy or the real Adam? Because his wife refers to him as Anthony, the agency where he works called him Anthony, but in no time we see someone call him Adam.
The scar left me intrigued, Hagen. So I thought in the accident.
Unless the accident occurred just in his mind(ID vs EGO). One way he finished with the Anthony cheater, his mistress, and return to being a good husband, but in the end with the key he will do everything again.

The point could made that Anthony was not real and that Adam was the persona that Anthony created. someone who he could have been, maybe this why Denis V. wanted to make this movie so bad. He connected with it but I think we all can.
After all Denis was studied to become an insect scientist sort of like Gil Grissom from CSI. I often wanted to ask him what made him change his mind that's quite leap from film making.

That "awful jacket" is a Gyvenchy dinner jacket and the absolute trend of the moment. What is awful to you is the "it" in men fashion today. He didn't look miserable, nor tired. Maggie looks more tired than him but hides it by smiling. Only problem with Jake's look is the beard-hair combo, it doesn't go with the dressed to the nines thing. Doesn't go with anything. Luckily it will all be gone by June.
I wasn't a fan of either Jake nor Maggie's look last night. Maggie looked like she was wearing shower curtains and Jake looked unkept like he just threw on that expensive jacket and that's all!
I think it's the first time i saw Jake wearing a white suit.

I don't care what brand it is, its still looked awful and out of place with all the black, if he had a white bowtie instead of the black one then maybe it would look ok but it did not fit either. And yes Jake looked tired and Maggie looked great-younger in fact.

By the way a lot of boxers do have facial hair so don't be surprised if he keeps the beard but cuts the hair.
